A SERIES of seven hypoeutectoid alloys, up to 18.2 atomic pct Mn, was made by the levitation melting technique. The loss of weight on melting was considered to be entirely due to volatilization of manganese, and compositions were computed on this basis. Filed samples (—200 Tyler mesh) were helium quenched from 1000°C after soaking for 5 min by a technique already described.' Quenched Alloys -Assessments of the amounts of a phase produced and the hardness of the quenched alloys are summarized in Fig. 1. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is involved in research to improve geological sensing (or geo-sensing) techniques. This paper presents results from field trials of two research projects concerned with new technologies for geosensing. The goal of the first project was to develop a "smart" roof bolter drill so that it could probe into roof rock to evaluate rock conditions. The goal of the second project was to modify an existing mine-wide monitoring system in a continuous mining operation so that the system could interface with geotechnical instruments to provide near real-time geosensing. Integration of this mine-wide monitoring system with the smart roof drill to collect, reduce, and analyze geotechnical data and the potential applications of the resulting technology in mining, are described.

COUNTRY RISK ANALYSIS A company operating in a foreign country assumes all the risks that it would at home. However, beyond these, it assumes risks that arise from the unique political economic, financial conditions of the foreign country which it operates. These risks are known as "country risks". The importance of these risks has grown appreciably in the recent past (particularly in the aftermath of Iran's revolution in the late 1970s and Mexico's debt rescheduling of 1982-83), and as a result, country risk analysis has become an increasingly useful management tool. Country risk analysis seeks to assess the probability that countries will service their aggregate foreign liabilities on time, as well as the probability that country conditions could inhibit the debt service capability of private sector debtors. This involves assessment of both the ability and the willingness of countries to meet their external liabilities in a timely fashion. "Ability" is linked economic and financial variables: principally, a country's economic structure, foreign exchange generating capacity and debt service burden. On the other hand, "willingness" is tied to political factors: mainly the economic/financial orientation of government policy and the stability of economic decision making. Ability: Economic, Financial Conditions and Prospects Judgement of a country's ability to meet foreign financial obligations begins with a detailed study of a country's external balance sheet which compares the country's foreign liabilities and assets. Table 1 below presents country balance sheets for Mexico, Korea and Indonesia. On the other hand, the relationship between Korea's external liabilities and assets ($50.5 billion and $7 billion, respectively), is more favorable and helps explain why Korea has been able to meet debt service payments and maintain its access to the international capital markets. Indonesia has even a more favorable relationship between its foreign assets and liabilities, $31 billion and $9 billion, respectively, and its debt is mostly lower interest rate, non-bank debt, making for a less onerous debt service burden. Porphyry type mineralization of Lower Cretaceous age in eastern Queensland has been recognized only from the easternmost part of the northern New England Orogen (Day, Murray and Whitaker, 1978), within the northern Yarrol Province (Horton,1982). Recent work about the Mt. Suthers (Pb, Zn, Ag, Cu, Au), Lug-e-nor (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Au, Mo), and German Tully (Cu, Au, Bi) prospects suggest that there has been a phase of porphyry type mineralization within the Gympie Province, of Lower Cretaceous age, overprinting earlier Permo-Triassic phases. About the Mt. Suthers Prospect surface samples of shallow, medium to heavy textured soils derived from marine sedimentary rocks of Permian age, and extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks of intermediate composition and Triassic age, were analysed for Cu, Zn, Pb, Co, Cr, Ni, Fe, V, Mn and Ag. Whereas strong iithological control determined the distribu- tion of Cu (diorite) and of Cr, Ni, Fe and V ,sedimentary rocks), the distribution of Pb, Zn, Ag and of Cu, were determined by mineralization of faults by a cavity fill hydrothermal process. Gold is associated with the Pb, Zn, Ag mineralization. Co and Mn showed distributions independent of lithology and structure. The fault controlled style of mineraliz- ation at Mt. Suthers is repeated at other localities to the south; Calgoa, Marodian, and German Gully. Relative dating of structural features and isotopic dating of nornblende porphyrites (134-135 m.y.) near and related to those mineralized at German c;ully suggest a previously unrecognized phase of porphyry copper style mineralization in south-east Queensland of Lower Cretaceous age (Fig. 1).

The use of cyanide in gold mining requires the careful handling and storage of cyanide rich tailings. Cyanide in groundwater can frequently be both persistent and mobile, so that tailings basins need to be designed to limit and collect seepage. Assessment of the potential environmental impact requires an understanding of the hydrogeologic regime, both before, during and after mining. Groundwater monitoring wells provide a basis for monitoring tailings pond behaviour and for assessing the impact of mitigative measures to reduce or control seepage. A case example of Cheni Gold Mines Lawyers Project in Canada is presented to illustrate the use of groundwater monitoring to determine the amount of cyanide degradation and attenuation between the tailings pond and the receiving environment.

The 1800’s were a time of tremendous advancements in science and experimentation, and earthquakes were a subject of great interest. The meetings of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1853 and 1854 are good examples of this. The proceedings of the Association for the 1854 meeting includes a table entitled “Catalogue of Recorded Earthquakes from 1784 to 1850” which takes up 326 pages, and lists available information on approximately 3000 earthquakes. The 1853 proceedings have a similar table for earthquakes recorded from 1606 B.C. to 1783. In the 1854 volume there is a “Report of the Committee on Earthquakes,” which provides us with a view of the general state of the science. Excerpts from that report follow:

A longwall face conveyor system serves the primary function as all material handling systems; i.e., to transport material between the source and its destination. However, the conveyor system must provide many other functions as opposed to the traditional belt conveyor system. In this paper, we will attempt to contrast the longwall face conveyor system with a belt conveyor system. In addition, the unique problems encountered along with the solutions to these problems will be covered. Table 1 lists the characteristics required of each conveyor system. The table demonstrates the contrast in the two systems. Both must be designed specifically to encounter its unique problems. The balance of this paper will explain how the longwall face conveyor is designed to address its requirements.

The resistivity anomaly known as the K state was studied in Ni-Mo alloys containing 10.5 and 14.0 at. pct Mo. Both these alloys exhibit a large K effect which depends on the mechanical and thermal treatment. On the basis of X-ray diffuse scattering studies which were correlated with resistivity measurements, it appears that the K state in dilute Ni-Mo alloys can be associated with changes in the degree of short-range order within the a phase. An interesting phenomenon that has received much attention in recent years is the K state. The K state is marked by anomalous changes in some of the physical properties of certain alloys without the occurrence of observable microscopic structural changes. One of the early pieces of work in this area was by Thomas' who studied alloys of Ni-Cr, Ni-Cu, Ni-Cu-Zn, Fe-A1, Fe-Si, and Ni-A1. Upon annealing specimens which had been previously cold-worked or quenched from an elevated temperature he found an anomalous increase in resistivity over a certain temperature range. He also found that specimens which had been appropriately annealed to develop the K state showed a decrease in resistivity upon subsequent cold working. These effects are opposite to those found in normal alloys. Although the resistivity anomaly has been rather arbitrarily taken as the "definition" of the K state, there are several other interesting effects which accompany the resistivity increase. In Ni-Cr alloys,2, 3 for example, it was found that the hardness increases with increasing resistivity. It was also found that specimens which have been treated to develop the K state can be cold-worked for as much as an 80 pct reduction of area without an increase in the hardness. In Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys4 the K state is accompanied by an increase in flow stress and by a lattice contraction. In Ni-A1 alloys,5 specimens which have been treated to develop the K state also show an increase in elastic modulus. In Ag-Pd alloys6 the increased resistivity observed on annealing a cold-worked specimen is accompanied by an increase in the thermoelectric power and an increase in the Hall coefficient. The explanations of the K state phenomena are varied and depend upon the particular alloy in question. Several theories have been advanced to explain the increased conductivity with cold work on the basis of changes in the electronic configuration of the alloy as a result of local lattice distortions.7"9 Most investigators, however, believe that some type of local order in the solid solution, either short-range order (SRO) or clustering, is responsible for this effect. Theories concerning the relationship between ordering and the K state have for the most part been speculative, since there is little direct X-ray evidence that can be correlated with the above property changes. Much of the previous work on the K state was done in the Ni-Cr system where the small difference in the X-ray atomic scattering factors of the components nickel and chromium makes it very difficult to use X-ray diffuse-scattering measurements to determine the role of local order. In the Ni-A1 system, however, Starke et al.10 succeeded in detecting a connection between local order and the K state. It was found that a small but measurable K effect correlated with increasing SRO in the nickel-rich a phase. The manner in which local order might increase the resistivity of K state alloys is not completely clear. Since most of the known K state alloys contain at least one transition element, significance has frequently been attached to the presence of an unfilled d shell. It has been suggested that during the formation of the K state the number of conduction electrons decreases as a result of the transfer of s electrons to the d shell where they are more tightly bound.1'11'12 Koster and Rocholl13 have proposed that SRO can cause an increase in resistivity for alloy systems in which the number and mobility of charge carriers are reduced when the percent solute is increased. According to this hypothesis, the local environment of a given solvent atom changes in the same manner with increasing percent solute as it does with an increasing degree of SRO; hence the change in physical properties should tend in the same direction. In this hypothesis, SRO is considered only in a statistical sense, and the increased resistivity of the K state is attributed to a change in the mean distribution of electrons and holes in the s and d states as a result of SRO. From the work of Chen and Nicholson on Ag-Pd alloys,6 it appears that the K state can occur in systems for which the d shell is completely filled. These investigators explained the increased resistivity by picturing the SRO as small domains of some form of long-range order (LRO). According to ~ibson,'~ the number of effective electrons can be reduced by the creation of a new Brillouin zone boundary near the Fermi surface of an alloy as a result of the changing crystallographic symmetry that accompanies the formation of a superlattice. This idea may be expressed in terms of the superzone concept.15 In the present work the role of local order in the formation of the K state in Ni-Mo alloys was investigated. The principal tools used in this study were X-ray diffuse scattering and electrical resistivity measurements; however, these data were supplemented by electron microscopic and field-ion microscopic data. The purpose of the work was to determine whether or not the K state in Ni-Mo alloys can indeed be attributed to the formation of SRO as has been proposed by previous investigators.

Exposure to vibration induced in and around underground mine’s exploration is a major concern to vehicles operators. Most of these drivers over time develop serious spinal musculoskeletal and discs problems causing low back injuries. The first purpose of this paper is to analyze the performance and dynamic response of driver/operator when subjected to different levels of vibration due to rough road conditions depicted in a mine field. The second purpose of the paper is to quantify the energy transmission in the presence of seat padding with special characteristics and active suspension. Using experimental testing data collected at NIOSH/PRL (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/ Pittsburgh Research Laboratory) along with model simulation algorithms developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago we investigated how acceleration transfer functions as well as absorbed power affects the different parts of the body. To this end, we used a previously validated human model which includes the head, torso segments and legs. The connective forces between body segments were modeled through modal analysis techniques from previous experimental data at the UIC Vehicle Technology Laboratory. The absorbed power and energy transmitted to the body are used as an index measure to assess the viability of the different seat padding’s and active seat suspension control strategies.

The paper deals with hydraulic transport of thin and dense slurries. Based on mathematical modelling of three-phase flow, dynamic properties of the systems for pumping of thin slurry are solved. Theoretical calculations were experimentally verified both at the testing hall and in real operation. For thin slurry (e.g. bauxite slurry), a three-chamber hydrohoist with float is used. Dense slurry (e.g. ash and water) is transported from the power plant to a deposit site by means of a three-chamber hydrohoist with sealed separator (piston).

In the course of research aimed at improving the performance of the Vanyukov smelting process (VP) for treating sulfur raw materials in a pilot-scale furnace it has been found that an increase in the calcium oxide content up to 12% to 14% in case of smelting to produce high-grade matte results in a decrease in the copper content of slag by 0.05% to 0.3%. The residual copper content of slag can be computed by a formula taking into account an increase in the calcium oxide content of the feed material and that in the slag. In the course of research for improving the performance of the zinc-containing slag fuming process with blowing of the slag bath with combustion products of natural gas it has been found that the silica and calcium oxide contents have an effect on the degree of zinc sublimation. In case of slag containing 24.4% SiO₂ and 6.95% CaO by weight (SiO₂:CaO = 3.51), the residual zinc content of slag was 3.25%. The minimum residual zinc content of 1.95% was obtained in case of slag containing 22.5% SiO₂ and 14.5% CaO by weight (SiO₂:CaO = 1.55). An increase in the CaO content of slag up to 16% by weight with a ratio of SiO₂:CaO = 1.25 to 1.35 permits minimization of zinc losses in slag by achieving a residual zinc content of final slag in the order of 1%.

Tunnelling with hydraulic drills has been a success in Norway. In the fall of 1976 excavation of tunnels for the development of the Aabjoera scheme was started. Two and a half years later a total of 25 kilometers of tunnels are completed. During the most busy period 5 rigs with hydraulic drills were in operation. GENERAL INFORMATION. Aabjoera Hydro Electric Plant is located in the central part of Norway (Fig. 1). The scheme covers a mountaineous area between the Tosen Fiord and the valley of Namdalen. Water from the area of precipitation is transferred through 5 tunnels to the main reservoir. From here the water is conducted via a 10 km long, unlined supply tunnel down to the Kolsvik power station. The power station is situated underground with a short tailrace tunnel out in the fiord. Average head of water is 507 m. The Aabjoera plant is jointly owned by Helgeland Kraftlag A/S, 8650 Mosjøen and Nord-Trøndelag Elektrisitetsverk, 7700 Steinkjer. The Civil Engineering Division of the latter company has acted as Consulting Engineers for the scheme. General contractors for the whole scheme has been Ing. F. Selmer A/S, Box 6035, Etterstad, Oslo 6.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is currently being produced from a relatively small area in the Dunkard and Pocahontas basins, in the northern and central parts of the Appalachian Basin, respectively. In general, much of the production occurs where the coal beds are beneath 500 feet or more of overburden, where the rank of the coal is high-volatile B or greater (%Ro >0.8), and where the natural fracture system is enhanced by structural deformation. It is anticipated that near-term CBM development will continue within these areas and will expand in the Appalachian basin as technology improves and as the price of gas rises.

A massive mudslide blocked a river in Utah, impounding a 61 m (200 ft) deep lake. Under emergency conditions, a system was designed and constructed to: (1) drain the impounded lake; and (2) provide a permanent diversion for the river around the mudslide. The system consisted of a low level tunnel, a connecting vertical shaft daylighting close to the lake shore, control valves mounted within the tunnel, and an inlet channel between the lake and the shaft. This paper focuses on the problems and concerns surrounding the inlet channel excavation and the stabilization of the remaining vertical rock walls.

Entretanto, qualquer uma das fontes de diminuição da eficiência do condensador geram efeitos similares dificultando a distinção entre elas ou a contribuição de cada uma para a queda no desempenho. Então a decisão pela manutenção tem aspectos claramente econômicos. Este artigo apresenta métodos para avaliação das fontes de perda de desempenho em condensadores e suas consequências na geração de energia.

Illinois produced 5 per cent more crude oil in 1934 than in 1933, because there was less curtailment, and. the value of the year's production at the wells was 35 per cent more than that of the previous year. The average price of Illinois crude oil in 1934 was $1.13 as compared with $0.87 in 1933, an increase of 30 per cent. The quotas of allowable production for Illinois during 1934, as authorized by Oil Administrator Harold L. Ickes, were as follows: January, February, March, 12,000 bbl. per day; April, May, 12,500; June, July, 12,600; August, 12,500; September, October, November, 12,000; December, 11,700. No other restrictions on production were in effect during the year until Oct. 11, when it was found necessary to prorate the fields to 75 per cent, a curtailment of 25 per cent below the quota fixed by the Federal Administrator. On Dec. 1 the curtailment was reduced to 18 per cent and on Dec. 18, to 15 per cent. Of the 26 wells drilled, 10 were oil producers, 8 were in proved fields and 2 were in a new pool in Wabash County, l½ miles south of the nearest production, one was a small gas well on the Stubblefield anticline in Bond County, one was an input well for repressuring in the Colmar-Plymouth field, McDonough County, and 14 were dry holes, mostly scattered wildcat tests.

Personnel management has undergone a remarkable change over the course of the past ten years. Personnel departments have played an increasingly important role, which today requires highly trained people and cannot be adequately served by the lesser qualified officials of yesteryear. Changes in the mining industry that stem from the demand for skilled labour to keep pace with technological developments and the mechanization of mines today demand that emphasis should be placed on the maximum utilization of manpower. Maximum utilization of manpower calls for more scientific and effective methods of recruiting, selecting, training, and placing workers so as to offer them the best opportunities for development and promotion, which naturally ensure a minimum labour turnover and eliminate labour unrest. This can be achieved only if well-qualified and properly trained personnel administrators are prepared to accept the challenge and apply themselves purposefully by assisting line mangement with the attainment of the company's corporate objectives.

The typical management systems used to address the issue of operating risk centre around technologies that identify, analyse and evaluate the risk factors. These logical systems such as HAZOPs, Fault Tree Analyses, etc rely heavily on technical considerations and process flow analysis. However, several research projects, across industries and countries have clearly shown that up to 80 per cent `operating risk' is determined by the actions of workers, supervisors and managers. Yet, most of the focus of risk management is on technical and procedural issues. This suggests that a significant imbalance exists in our management systems and that industries are unlikely to show significant improvement on current levels of safety performance. Effective risk management must include the intangible element of the organisation psychology towards risk. A practical and theoretically sound approach had been researched and developed in and for the mining industry. This paper describes the approach and methodologies applied at the Cosmo Howley Gold Mine in the Northern Territory, where an inclusive approach to managing financial and operating risk was followed. The Cosmo Howley Mine showed a dramatic reduction in lost time injuries and improvements in financial indices - providing conclusive evidence of the link between management effectiveness, safety and productivity. This `triangle' has often been the subject of speculation and theory. It is demonstrated in this paper how the management team of Cosmo Howley focused their practices and systems on the improvement of organisational dynamics, ensured tangible and clear focus on parameters of costs and safety and how the improvement process was managed. It is concluded that the improvement process did not require a `major re-engineering' of the organisation. The organisation culture changes that occurred were incremental, planned and effective. It entailed the implementation of sound risk management methodologies, and ensured that a significant emphasis was placed on an aspect that is defined as `organisational dynamics'.

KNELLER' has recently reported that extensive metastable solid solutions may be obtained in Cu-Fe alloys by simultaneous vapor deposition. This note reports that solid solutions, apparently single -phase, can be obtained for Cu-Fe alloys containing 0 to 20 and 85 to 100 at. pct Fe by rapid quenching from the melt; the inability to extend the solid solubilities further is related to the liquid miscibility gap, Fig. 1, as for Cu-Co alloys.2'3 Accurate lattice spacings of the copper-rich fcc and iron-rich bcc solid solutions have been obtained. Homogeneous alloys were prepared by casting4'5 and sintering2 from elements of 99.9+ pct purity. The quenching techniques were as before,' except the iron-rich alloys were liberally covered with argon while at elevated temperatures. Flakes about 1 sq mm in area were obtained and investigated with the Debye-Scherrer technique, as previously described.2,4 All X-ray work was done at 25° 2°C using filtered copper and cobalt K radiation. Relative visual intensities of the diffraction lines for the phases in the quenched alloys are shown in Table I. The lattice spacings of the fcc structure for alloys containing up to 80 at. pct Fe are plotted in Fig. 2. The variation of these lattice parameters with composition is in good agreement with the re- of cementite spots usually present (all hkl reflections are allowed) and the ease of confusing them with ferrite or martensite reflections. This discrepancy may be due to the different temperatures at which the X-ray measurements were carried out and perhaps to the different extrapolation procedures. Also, Andersen and Kingsbury6 state that their lattice spacings were computed relative to the wavelengths given by Siegbahn in 1933; this reference has not been found and it is assumed that the well-known 1931 wavelengths were used, the lattice spacings then being in kx units which are converted into angstroms by the factor 1.00202.
