Researchers associated with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), are investigating injuries (fatal and nonfatal) attributed to water well drillers during well drilling activities. Injury data, obtained from various sources, suggest that many water well drillers are experiencing unnecessarily high insurance premiums and very avoidable citations or violations from the direct result of accidents, injuries, and fatalities occurring throughout the water well drilling industry. Expensive insurance premiums and unnecessary citations are the direct result of poor health and safety practices. Visits to numerous water well drilling sites were conducted by NIOSH personnel to characterize and identify the injury data collected and to provide inexpensive strategies to prevent, minimize, and eliminate safety and health issues associated with water well drilling activities.

During the past 20 years. research and development in the study of reservoir behavior have dealt principally with flow of oil through sandstones. Many reservoir studies of sand fields have proved valuable in promoting recovery efficiency. This paper discusses fundamental principles governing oil and gas production from sandstone and limestone alike and presents the results of investigations relating to the application of analytical techniques used for sandstone reservoir studies to the study of limestone reservoir performance. The characteristics of limestone porous systems, porosity-permeability relationships, distribution and occurrence of oil, and characteristics of flow through such systems are discussed. Recognition is made of the similarities or differences which these factors exhibit in limestone and sandstone systems. Comparisons between operating data for typical limestone and sand reservoirs are presented. It is indicated that the distribution and movement of fluids in and through porous limestones follow the same fundamental principles underlying such processes in sandstones. This fundamental similarity may readily be discernible in the performance of many limestone reservoirs. The volumetric balance and unsteady state radial flow equation, the fluid displacement equation, use of electrical analogue devices, and other analytical techniques to study the behavior of limestone fields appear fundamentally applicable, but do require thorough understanding of the properties of the formation, of the fluids, their behavior during flow, and adequate production operating data. Need for more complete coring and comprehensive examination of core properties is stressed. The results of "active oil" studies, and of flow and interference tests are presented. Well spacing, well completion, and efficient rates of production in limestone reservoirs are briefly discussed. INTRODUCTION Limestone and dolomite reservoirs constitute the largest source of supply of crude oil in the world. an estimated 60 per cent of present production coming from carbonate reservoirs. In many large geologic provinces such as Mexico. the Middle East, and more recently Canada, almost all the oil is found in this type of rock. In the United States, all of the major oil-producing areas except California and Pennsylvania contain oil-bearing carbonate formations. The discovery in recent years of large oil reserves in the Silurian, Devonian, and Ordo-vician formations in West Texas, in addition to the large reserves in the Permian, has accentuated the interest of operators, geologists, and engineers in limestone formations and in the many problems associated with understanding the performance of these reservoirs. The rapid increase in discovery of oil in limestone formations and the present-day position of prominence held by these fields in the production and reserve picture in all parts of the world emphasize the horizons opened to the reservoir technologist in the field of geological and production research. Pertinent to an interpretation of the behavior of limestone reservoirs are the methods of analysis which may be utilized and a possession of full knowledge of the many factors which influence the analytical procedures. During the past 20 years a well-developed science of reservoir engineering has been built upon the research of many workers who studied the fundamental nature of oil reservoirs, characteristics of the porous media, properties and behavior of the contained fluids, and the mechanics of flow. Application of these studies to production practice has resulted in greater recoveries and more efficient field operation. The major portion of this evolutionary process has been founded upon studies of sand fields. The applicability of these more thoroughly developed techniques for studying sand fields to the study of the behavior of limestone fields becomes a factor of technical and practical significance. In the light of the technological background available to the reservoir analyst, this paper discusses fundamental principles governing oil and gas production from sandstone and limestone alike and presents the results of investigations relating to the application of analytical techniques used for sandstone studies to the study of limestone reservoir performance. LIMESTONE RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS The characteristics of limestone and sandstone reservoirs are similar in many respects and they both may occur under similar structural conditions. Fundamentally, the distribution and movement of fluids in and through the porous limestone media follow the same basic principles which dictate such processes in sandstones. Herein lies a fundamental similarity, which may readily be discernible in the performance of many limestone reservoirs. In some limestone fields, as in many sand fields, widely varying formation properties and distribution may reveal themselves in deviations in the performance of the reservoir, in the behavior of wells, and in fluid flow through the rock, and make difficult the delineation of reservoir behavior. Only by reservoir studies, core analyses, and coordinated laboratory and field experimentation can the effects of the many influencing factors upon the nature of limestone production be determined. FORMATION CHARACTERISTICS The chief difference between limestone and sandstone, aside from their chemical compositions, is the difference in the geometry and origin of the porous systems in the two kinds of rock. Preface Pipe heading is a customary and proven technology for the underground installation of all types of piping. In over 90 % of all cases, straight pipe sections are used between shaft constructions since, e.g. this follows roadways or it is necessary from the operational aspect due to pipe control methods, e.g. to use a remote control pipe sensor or comparable control devices within sight from shaft to shaft. Frequently, a straight pipeline is impossible, and is replaced by a more or less spatial alignment due to surface conditions, structures in the ground or foundations. This situation applied for the construction of the Nebensammler Neuland (intercepting sewer) in Hamburg-Neuland for sections IV and V. The following paper is not intended as a description of the complete project. It deals mainly with the special features of this pipe heading, with what I believe to be its somewhat unusual route. In this report, the Bureau of Mines presents a theoretical solution for the stresses and displacements in an infinite elastic plate containing a circular hole the boundary of which is loaded by applied radial stresses over four separated arcs. The problem solved is a two-dimensional approximation of the stresses and displacements developed by a large tunnel-boring machine anchored in a circular tunnel. Analysis of the solution shows that the tangential tensile stresses induced on the boundary of the circular opening can be minimized in the roof and maximized in the floor of the opening by proper spacing and loading of the four arcs.

At the present time most artillery cartridge cases are used only a single time. Since the process of reshaping a fired cartridge case so that it may be used again is much simpler and cheaper than the original manufacture of the case, it is clear that important savings could be effected if such re-formed cases were used in place of new cases. Extensive use of reconditioned cases has been hindered in the past, however, by the deterioration of the brass which may occur in the period of time between the first firing and the reconditioning of the cartridge cases. This deterioration sometimes results in a dangerously high incidence of firing splits in groups of reconditioned cartridge cases. It appears that the mechanism of the deterioration is the season cracking of the brass, for season cracks, of varying degrees of severity, may frequently be found in the cartridge cases after their return from the field. There are, of course, severe practical limitations to the extent to which fired cartridge cases can be protected from corrosion under battle conditions, particularly since the powder residue in the case is itself corrosive. The present paper describes a rapid method of testing the sidewalls of artillery cartridge cases for the presence of season cracks. This method has been developed specifically for use in connection with the reconditioning of fired cases, and makes it possible to carry out 100 per cent inspection. The extractive sector today faces growing social, legal and political risks (SLPs) from so many different stakeholders including national and local governments, name and shame groups, civil society and environmental groups, and the ?Occupy? movement. Beyond these stakeholders, there are the indigenous peoples who have growing legal, social, political and economic influence which can often determine the outcome of the Project. The development curve in the extractive sector from initial exploration to mine start-up has become longer, steeper and more risky and expensive as these SLPs have grown in scope and complexity. Even if a project is permitted or starts commercial production, its ongoing development and operations are also facing these SLPs. The continuous assessment of these SLPs and the strategy to mitigate for them has now become critical for every project in the extractive sector. A project will only be successful if it is able to obtain the legal permits to operate, then withstand any judicial reviews, and then also to be able to gain and maintain the Social License to Operate (SLO). Stakeholder identification, management and engagement are key risk-mitigation tools. This paper focuses on the growing influence that indigenous peoples are now enjoying and the impacts on the extractive sector. Indigenous peoples are a unique stakeholder group because their legal rights and interests to lands and resources, their aboriginal title and rights, are gaining more recognition. When indigenous peoples form alliances with other stakeholders, this simply adds to their growing momentum and leverage, and this can become a daunting challenge for the extractive sector. More due diligence is required by companies to understand and assess the challenges posed by operating in areas claimed by indigenous peoples. There is a real need for mining companies to develop an effective indigenous engagement strategy to address these challenges in order to successfully convert risks into opportunities. Early identification and engagement with the indigenous peoples is required and the goal should be to conclude an Impact Benefits Agreement (IBA) with the affected indigenous peoples. The real objective must be to develop a real and transparent relationship between the company and the indigenous peoples so as to gain and maintain the SLO.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That, we believe that thorough and complete preparedness in the army, the navy and the industries of the country is vital; anything less is unsatisfactory and inefficient and may result in disaster to the nation.

Develop a more efficient method of testing the integrity of in-situ leach mining operations. The Problems For economic and environ-mental reasons, in-situ leaching operations must be sure that wells do not leak. Loss of solution in large quantities can be expensive in itself, and if such losses result in pollution the costs can be even higher. Wells are usually tested for leaks by sealing them with packers, pressurizing them and monitoring the pressure drop. However, many commercially-available packers are designed to be used in steel-cased wells rather than the fiberglass-or plastic-cased wells used for in-situ mining. These packers are heavy, cumbersome, expensive, and often leak. In addition, commonly used well-integrity-test systems require lengthy test periods and drill rigs or hoist trucks with rigid pipes must be used to run the packers in and out of the well. The Bureau of Mines has developed a mobile, self-contained leak-testing system that is faster, uses trailer-mounted equipment that can be operated by one person, and features a new inflatable packer.

THE State of Ohio is among the pioneers in the production of oil and gas. Numerous anticlinals, such as the Macksburg, Cow Run and Newport, have been thoroughly developed, and the pools found in connection with them are quite in accord with the structural theory. Numerous oil and gas pools found in the Berea sand, however, demand a different explanation. The study of these pools belongs to the sub-surface geologist, as it is possible to understand the factors controlling "off-structure" accumulations only after a careful study of well records. By carefully analyzing the various 'conditions over a large territory, it is possible to understand the otherwise meaningless mass of data that one may have at hand, and put it into tangible shape, from which various conclusions may be drawn. The territory here discussed includes Belmont, Guernsey, Muskingum, Noble, Monroe, Morgan, Washington, Athens and Meigs counties, containing the majority of the prolific oil and gas pools of the Carboniferous system in southeastern Ohio. The general dip of the strata is to the southeast, the entire territory lying on the northwestern flank of the Appalachian geosyncline. The best known oil- and gas-producing horizon in the territory is the Berea sand, which lies near the lower part of the Mississippian, with the Sunburry shales (the coffee-shales of the driller) above, and the Bedford shales below it. The Bedford is underlain by the thick Ohio shales. The Ohio and Bedford contact is considered to be the dividing line between the Carboniferous and Devonian systems. The Berea is one of the most persistent of recognizable oil and gas horizons; its outcrop has always been found in its expected place, and it has always been penetrated whenever the drill went deep enough. It is not expected, however, even of the most uniform formations, that no lithological variations should occur, and the Berea is no exception. Nevertheless, there appears to be a certain regularity in its variation, the main features of which directly affect the accumulation of petroleum.

Granulated sinter mixes of three iron ore types were prepared with a range of water contents in a laboratory investigation. The mean diameter of the granulated mixes and the void fraction of beds of the mixes were determined experimentally. Pressure drop measurements over a range of flow rates were made in a laboratory permeameter with pressure tappings at several depths in the bed. The Ergun equation was applied to the results to determine the shape factor of the granulated mixes. Pressure readings down the bed were used to estimate the local void fraction in the bed using the Ergun equation and the calculated granule shape factors. It was found that there was a decrease in void fraction with depth in the bed. The significance of this and the variation of shape factor values with the amount of water used for granulation is examined in relation to the strength of granules of the sinter mixes. The experimental and mathematical techniques presented may be useful in interpreting the behavior of the permeability of sinter beds after ignition.

A crescente demanda de energia elétrica em nosso país sobrecarrega o Sistema de Transmissão [Tx] e Distribuição [Dx], e gera a necessidade de constantes ampliações para não prejudicar o desenvolvimento do Brasil. Neste contexto foram realizados estudos visando avaliar o efeito da adição de três teores de Ni em uma liga Al-0,05%Cu-[0,24-0,28]%Fe-0,7%Si destinada à produção de cabos elétricos. O estudo parte da verificação e posterior comparação das características estruturais, mecânicas e elétricas da liga com a adição do elemento citado. Para a realização do mesmo, os perfis estudados foram obtidos por solidificação estática direta em lingoteira metálica e as amostras foram obtidas a partir de perfis solidificados, usinados e deformados a frio para diferentes diâmetros. Nestas circunstâncias, o diâmetro de 3,0 mm foi aquele que apresentou as melhores respostas elétricas, mecânicas e estruturais, sendo, portanto, adotado como fonte de estudo.

The use of model studies for the development of invasion patterns for cycling is .illustrated by model studies obtained with a recently developed apparatus in the solution of actual cycling problems. Introduction Depletion of a gas reservoir by cycling under pressure maintenance may be divided into three general phases. In the first phase, injection of dry gas is used to move all possible wet gas to producing wells prior to breakthrough of appreciable quantities of dry gas into producing wells. In the second phase, injection moves additional wet gas to producing wells while moderate quantities of dry gas are being produced. The third phase consists of production without injection to deplete the commercial gas reserve which remains after the cycling operation. Thus, in the first phase, a portion of the reservoir is invaded by dry gas, and the dry gas usually displaces something less than 100 pct of the wet gas from the invaded portions of the reservoir. The second phase enlarges the invaded portion of the reservoir and, at the same time, increases recovery from that zone invaded by dry gas in the first phase of the cycling operation. The result is an early yield of a substantial quantity of the liquefiable hydrocarbons in the reservoir with a minimum of the retrograde losses which occur in some reservoirs. The overall recovery from such an operation is usually high. The summation of the paths taken by dry gas in a cycling operation can be termed an invasion pattern. The use of electrical models to predict invasion patterns has been the subject of several contributions to the literature.1-3 The results of such model studies as applied to actual cases has been discussed by Kelton4 and Miller and Lents.= Recently, an improved apparatus for conducting potentiometric model studies has been developed, as described by Lee.V he purpose of this paper is to present model studies or invasion patterns obtained with this instrument in the solution of actual cycling problems. The percentage of displacement of wet gas within the invaded portion of the reservoir in cycling, increase in recoveries of wet gas by continuing cycling after dry gas breakthrough, recoveries of wet and dry gas by production after cycling, or economic factors in cycling are beyond the scope of this paper. Discussions which follow will be limited entirely to the development of suitable invasion patterns for cycling under pressure maintenance and the use of model studies therein. THE new 4800-ton fine-grinding plant at the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines property at Timmins, in the Porcupine district of northern Ontario, went into operation in November 1937, and represents the culmination of an experimental program. The plant is a moderately low rectangular building of hollow tile on a steel frame, large enough to house four 7 by 15-ft. ball mills, with a 12 by 27-ft. classifier beside each mill. At one end is space for the addition of another mill and classifier or a mill and classifier for the regrinding of table concentrates. This regrinding is now done in the old grinding department of the main mill building. Also within the new building are the four 6-in. sand pumps for lifting the product from the low-dis- charge ball mills up to the classifier feed launders and the containers and appurtenances of a complete dust-collecting system. Together with the usual overhead crane, these constitute the major units of equipment within the new plant. The location is at the lower end of the main mill buildings toward the old tailings pond, now so neatly leveled off and sodded to rival the very best of our own W.P.A. projects. Close by the new grinding plant is a large dome-shaped structure-the new fine-ore bin designed arid built by Mr. Longmore and the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs. There are four separate automatically loaded inclined belt conveyors leading up from the bottom of the bin to the grinding plant. Each belt is equipped with a recording weightometer, in the grinding building. The whole structure and the machinery within it give the impression of permanence and a carefully integrated design with close attention to details, giving the operators every advantage for consistently good work. The many ideas and opinions behind this achievement were all ably organized and executed by the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs, anti not a few were directly initiated by them. Excellent cooperation was afforded by the Hollinger staff to the engineers helping to conduct the grinding and classification test program. It was the author's privilege

In the winter of 1895 to 1896, during the construction of the Jackson and Cincinnati railroad, running from Addison, Lenawee county, Mich., to Jackson, Mich., in a northerly direction, I had occasion to observe some interesting geological features, described below, in a cut of this railroad made through the low ridge of gravel and sand, dividing the valley of Silver Lake and Silver Creek from the Goose Lake and Goose Creek valley, in Lenawee county. The surface-deposits of this part of the county are, as is well known, of glacial origin. Gently rounded, long ridges of sand, gravel and clay intervene between the marshy bottoms and the lakes of the valleys. The nature of the deposits, varying from a sandy clay or clayey sand to fine and coarse gravel and pure siliceous sand on the one hand, and to a very tough, fine, uniform and often indurated clay on the other, as well as the irregular and sudden changes, sharply divided, between these materials composing the ridges, in the cuts made through them by the railroad, would admit of no doubt that this country owes its present surface-configuration primarily to the action of the last glacial period, which covered its surface with an immense ice-sheet. The well-known ice-markings on the huge granite, schist, greenstone and conglomerate boulders found everywhere imbedded and protruding from the surface, add their testimony to the other characteristics mentioned. Most of the cuts made by the railway through the ridges showed in a marked degree the irregular arrangement and the sudden changes of and between the materials mentioned above. One cut, however, known as Kelly's cut, or Kelly's gravelpit, about 4 1/2 miles north of Addison, and about 1 1/2 miles south

Fly ash samples were collected from two large lignite-fired power plants of Ptolemais region, northern Greece. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) was applied for the characterisation of the samples. ESEM coupled with Energy Dispersive System (EDS) provided fast and accurate results on the morphology, mineralogy and chemical composition of the fly ash particles. Fly ash consists mainly of aluminosilicate glass, silicates, oxides-hydroxides, sulphates, carbonates and char. Various types of chars, spheres (e.g. ferrospheres, cenosphers, plerospheres etc.), spheroids, agglomerates and mineral crystalls were observed. The size distribution of the fly ash particles was correlated with their mineralogical and chemical composition. Possible environmental impacts and potential utilization is also discussed in this study.

The building of sanitary and storm drainage sewers in urban or environmentally sensitive areas often requires the use of tunnel construction procedures. While hydraulic considerations may require only small diameters, traditional tunneling techniques make small sizes the least economical. Current state-of-the-art techniques using highly mechanized systems of pipe jacking can provide cost effective solutions to the problems of construction of small size tunnels. The characteristics of mechanized pipe jacking allow rapid advances under difficult ground conditions. The basic pipe jacking cycle is used with a variety of excavation systems to permit the contractor to satisfy engineering as well as economic parameters. These characteristics and several of the systems available are outlined.

The paper presents new developments of the methodology of open pit coal production scheduling optimisation. They deal with the specific features of the exploitation of single coal seam and utilisation of truck-shovel and dragline systems. A production scheduling optimisation model is developed as a linear programming problem. The objective function maximises the net present value of the mining project under the technological constraints for meeting the demand function of the coal processing plant and effective utilisation of the available production equipment. Both principles of mine planning, coal quality optimisation and waste deferment are incorporated in the model. Results of a case study are provided to illustrate the applicability of the optimisation model.

A probability-based analysis method in conjunction with the finite element structure modeling technique to evaluate an entry system stability is developed. Variability of the rock properties and loading surrounding the entry system is taken into consideration to predict a roof stability by using the probability of failure instead of the common safety factor concept. A dynamic programming is applied to establish a recurrence relationship between the degree of potential roof fall and accumulated roof fall index in an area of interested. A probable distribution of roof fall is assessed by using a developed computer program, RFSTAB. The assessment of the roof falling boundary in the longwall entry system is used as the example to illustrate the procedure and effectiveness of this analysis method

In this paper I will try to give an overall picture of the use of pure oxygen in gold leaching in South Africa. Pure oxygen has been overlooked as a reagent for many years. Only with the increased sophistication of gold plant instrumentation, greater recognition of the technical abilities of the plant management and a more definite attitude towards plant efficiency has the recent break-through been achieved. There are, today, twelve plants using pure oxygen in this way as a permanent part of their operation and another three or four presently carrying out long-term evaluations. I believe that this number will double over the next few years as more and more plants identify potential benefits. I have, therefore, set out to look at the background and chemistry behind these innovations, describe the various methods available to dissolve oxygen, briefly look at the laboratory and trial work carried out by ourselves at Afrox and then the different installations, both ours and those of our competitors.
