A number of articles have been published, notably those by R. S. Handy, R. T. Hancock and A. P. Watt in Engineering and Mining Journal, dealing with the calculations involved in ore dressing. These publications demonstrate both the importance of the subject and the lack of success in developing a generally recognized method for comparing enrichment effects. Considering that we may wish to compare enrichment results on similar or dissimilar ores, that we may desire to make the comparison on the basis of either the absolute or the economical efficiency, and that the number of factors upon which the result depends is large, the question arises whether it is possible to set up a positive method for such calculations. In the following pages it is our aim to show that a sure, complete and successful way to overcome existing difficulties has been found. The emission of firedamp from the strata surrounding active workings of longwall coal faces normally follows a cyclic pattern associated with the mining operations being carried out on the face. Mining a coal seam disturbs the uniform distribution of overburden weight such that the working is enveloped by a region of high stress, both above and below the seam, advancing with the coal face. There is a decrease in stress as the strata is relaxed following the passage of the face (1). The paper describes experimental results obtained during the initial investigations of a study intended to examine the permeability of samples of coal measure strata under various triaxial stress conditions. Several investigators have studied the effect of stress on the permeability of rock, usually in the field of oil reservoir engineering. Two general lines of approach are evident. One used by among others Fatt and Davies (2), McLatchie et a1 (31, Brace et al (4) and Gunther (5) was to subject a rock sample to hydrostatic pressure. Gas or water would be passed through a sealed core mounted inside a high pressure hydraulic bomb. The second approach, favoured by Wilhelmi and Somerton (6) and also by Gray et a1 (7) was to employ a so-called 'triaxial' state of stress. Here radial confining pressure and axial stress are applied independently. The permeability is measured in the direction of the axial load. With the exception of Gunther who tested coals and Brace et a1 who tested a granite, the rocks used have been sandstones with permeabilities generally appreciably higher than British coal measure rocks.

THE fact is notable though probably little known that the United States is the only nation obtaining and distributing through its Government bureaus any data pertaining to waste metals and drosses. Some foreign governments do issue reports relating to mine or smelter produc-tion of primary metals, but none gives in scope and detail the information published now by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and formerly by the U. S. Geological Survey; and this is despite the fact that the funds annually allotted for those purposes are insignificant in comparison with allotments for the preparation of data relating to other industries of like importance. The earliest data on the production of metals from secondary sources in the United States were-contained in a press bulletin issued by the U. S. Geological Survey on Jan. 4, 1909. The information published was that for the year 1907 obtained and compiled by C. E. Siebenthal, who was one of the first to visualize the growing importance of the scrap-metal industry. The National Conservation Commission had emphasized its opinion that the known domestic supply of certain kinds of the more important metals was being rapidly marketed and that while there was no immediate cause for concern it was best to conserve such resources. Not only had there been a lamentable lack of any data regarding the quantity of scrap metals available or used but also gross carelessness and indifference in the segregation, collection, and effective use of scrap material. Siebenthal realized that even approximately correct statistics of recoveries from the more important base-metal scrap and drosses were nearly as essential to both producers and consumers as the statistics of the output of primary metals. There were not then nor are there now sufficient funds for complete collection of data, nor was it considered the province of the Geological Survey to do more than determine approximately the recovery of secondary metals for use in supplementing those given for the primary metals. A data-classification scheme was developed to detect potential uranium mineralization in the Montrose l º x 2º quadrangle, Colorado. The methodology developed is a rapid and efficient method of resource evaluation on a reconnaissance scale. The necessary techniques were developed and refined to digitize, integrate, and register various large geological, geochemical, and geophysical data sets for the Montrose quadrangle, Colorado, using a grid resolution of 1 km. All data sets for the Montrose quadrangle were registered to the Universal Trans- verse Mercator projection. The data sets include hydrogeochemical and stream sediment analyses for 23 elements, uranium-to-thorium ratios, airborne geo- physical survey data, the locations of 90 uranium occurrences, and a geologic map (scale 1:250 000). Geochemical samples were collected from 3965 locations in the 19 200 km2 quadrangle; aerial data were collected on flight lines flown with 3-5 km spacings. These data sets were smoothed by universal kriging and interpolated to a 179 x 119 rectangular grid (each grid block is 1 km2). A mylar transparency of the geologic map was prepared and digitized. All possible combinations of three, for all data sets, were examined for general geologic correlations by utilizing a color microfilm output. Subsets of data were further examined for selected test areas. A classification scheme for uranium mineralization, based on selected test areas in the Cochetopa uranium district, is presented. Areas favorable for uranium mineralization, based on this scheme, were identified and are discussed.

THE classification and preparation of non-ferrous scrap metals is a subject of interest to every individual and corporation that employs in its processes of manufacture non-ferrous metals and alloys and accumulates in such manufacture scrap from these materials for disposition in the form of turnings, borings, short ends, punchings, clippings, grindings, washings, etc. All too frequently the disposition of such scrap is left to individuals who have no knowledge of the subject either from a metallurgical or a commercial standpoint, or both. Much money is thus lost which with a little more intelligent effort might be saved, and in this day of fierce competition and small profits such an opportunity cannot be ignored. The Mineral Resources of the United States for the year 1925, the latest issue available (Part 1, page 221), gives the secondary non-ferrous metals of certain classes recovered in the United States for the year 1924 to 1925 as shown in Table 1. The figures are tabulated simply to give the reader some idea of the scope of the secondary non-ferrous metal industry. Approximately 900,000 tons of an annual value of $244,000,000 were recovered in the year cited. In 1916 (again using the Mineral Resources of the United States as authority) the tonnage reclaimed was approximately 632,000 tons and the value, because of the high prices for metals prevailing at that time, amounted to $265,000,000. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss smelting and refining operations or the feasibility of an organization, primarily engaged in some other activity, conducting smelting and refining operations to convert its own non-ferrous scrap metals and alloys. The classification and preparation of these non-ferrous materials is a preliminary step, regardless of what subsequent operations the material may pass through or where these operations may be conducted. For that reason the subject can be readily discussed without any reference to subsequent activities. Space must be provided, with suitable handling facilities, scales and the necessary storage bins where the material may be accumulated. The scope of the activity, the nature of the industry and the tonnage handled will determine, in a large measure, what preparation, if any, it may be desirable to give these scrap materials to put them in the best marketable condition. We wish to congratulate the authors on a fine presentation of a difficult and interesting problem. We fully support the findings that liquid or even mushy center reduction has no place in the production of quality steels. We also agree with the findings, or implications, that internal bar quality is not made in the rolling stands, but in the caster. This is the main reason why Inland caster exclusively uses the submerged casting technique after a few months of familiarization with open casting. The metallurgical advantages of combining in-line reduction with a caster are actually indirect. The use of submerged casting and refining powder permits casting of fine grained aluminum killed steels without resorting to expensive grain refiners and cuts down or eliminates reoxidation during casting. Immersion of a snorkel into a small mold may lead to several operating difficulties. Hence, the presence of in-line reduction enables the section to be cast into a large mold, at high output rates, while obtaining some product size flexibility. The capital and operating costs of a caster-- in-line mill are lower than those of the traditional installation with a separate reheating furnace and billet mill. Admittedly, in-line reduction represents an additional challenge to the steelmaker, maintenance man, and metallurgist.

The equilibrium of gaseous H2O-H2, mixtures with liquid iron is used to establish the activity coefficient of dissolved oxygen as log f o = — 0.20 [%O]. Discrepancies in earlier work are explained or eliminated. Additions of cobalt, molybdenum, tungsten, and platinum increase the activity coefficient of oxygen whereas copper and gold decrease it. THE importance of dissolved oxygen as a refining agent in liquid steel has led to a number of studies of its thermodynamic properties. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the effects of a number of alloying elements on the activity of oxygen in the steel bath. As a preliminary to the study of the effects of alloying elements, it seemed desirable to examine certain minor discrepancies in the published data on the properties of oxygen in simple iron-oxygen solutions. The activity and free energy of oxygen in liquid iron were studied by chipman1 in 1933 by means of the reaction h2(g)+-o = H2O (g);K; = PH2O/PH2[% O] [1] The data were in fairly good agreement with calculations from results on the similar reaction CO (g) + O- = CO2 (g); K2 =P CO2/P CO [% O] [2] which had been obtained by Vacher and Hamilton2 as an incidental part of their study of the reaction of carbon with oxygen dissolved in the melt. It was found that the equilibrium ratio k1 was not a true constant but varied with the oxygen concentration in the manner shown in Fig. 1, which is copied from the original paper. This early observation has been refuted in subsequent work but is confirmed in the present paper, and an explanation of the discrepancy can now be presented. The selective flotation of semi-soluble salts with fatty acids is often negatively affected by the interaction of the potential determining cation with the ionic surfactant in bulk solution. This problem can be avoided by floating at low pH which involves the emulsification of the collector. The research presented here focuses on the influence of the Ca2+ ion on the flotation of fluorite with palmitic acid at low pH. Our results show that the surfaces of collector emulsions are dominated by precipitation phenomena similar to those encountered in bulk. In turn, fluorite in palmitic solution at intermediate pH displays surface properties similar to those of the collector by itself. This may be due to two alternative mechanisms (i) adsorption of bulk precipitate on the fluorite surface or (ii) the formation of a bilayer of surfactant ions on fluorite. Possibly, both mechanisms occur simultaneously.

Thirty six different commodities were recorded from 3708 mineral occurrences in the Atherton 1:250 000 Sheet area, mapped by personnel of the Queensland Department of Resource Industries. Tin, occurring in 56% of all mineral occurrences, is the most common, followed by copper, tungsten, silver, lead, gold, fluorite molybdenum, zinc and antimony. The densest area of mineral occurrences is the Herberton Mineral Field, one of the most intensively mined areas in the state.The majority of occurrences in the sheet area are fracture, fault or shear related vein or lenticular deposits, with subordinate types being pipe, skarn, endogreisen, disseminated and porphyry copper deposits. However the larger mines in the area are commonly of the subordinate types including the Red Dome gold-copper skarn, the Wolfram Camp and Bamford Hill tungsten- m olydbenum endogreisens, and the Vulcan pipe tin deposit. Significant gold prospects occur in quartz-antimony veins, breccia pipes and skarn deposits associated with rhyolitic porphyry dykes. A fluorite-gold association has been noted in several areas on the western side of the sheet.Mineralised fractures are predominantly oriented in a NNW direction which is the major trend in the Hodgkinson Province. Secondary N and NE directions are also present.

"Scientific advances in the past decade have greatly clarified our understanding of certain concepts relating to the age and origin of diamonds. These advances are largely the result of geochemical studies of mineral inclusions in diamonds, made possible by modem analytical techniques which enable the accurate chemical analysis of micro-sized particles of the order of 200 microns in maximum dimension. As a generalization, the inclusions indicate that most diamonds formed from either of two rock types, peridotite and eclogite. Peridotitic diamonds have yielded ages of 3300 million years, whereas eclogitic diamonds areyounger and rangein agefrom approximately 1000to 1600million years. Kimberlite and lamproite, the two rock types usually associated with diamonds, typically are much younger than the diamonds they contain. Thus, it is now dear that kimberlites and lamproites are only the transporting mechanisms which brought diamonds to the surface and are in no way related to the formation of most diamonds. The latest concepts which developed during the past decade regarding the sources of carbon for the crystallization of diamonds from peridotite and eclogite, and the mechanisms of kimberlite and lamproite emplacement, IntroductionThe decade of the 1980s has seen major advances in our understanding of the age, origin and emplacement of diamonds. The information presented herein is applicable to virtually all natural diamonds, excluding diamonds related to meteorite impacts. There is still some question, however, as to the applicability of the new information to industrial grade ""fibrous"" or ""coated"" diamonds, and to microdiamonds (< 1 mm). In addition to drawing upon our own experiences, this review is summarized from a voluminous literature and for those interested in the original sources we recommend the books by Mitchell and Bergman (1991), Ross (1989), Nixon (1987), Mitchell (1986), Glover and Harris (1984) and Dawson (1980), and the review articles by Mitchell (1991), Gurney (1989) and Meyer (1985).are also discussed."

INTRODUCTION Hydrothermal vents that form seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits represent unique biodiversity hotspots that host many species that are found only at these sites. The destruction of these habitats remains one of the greatest environmental risks associated with proposed mining of SMS deposits. For this reason, there is a growing movement to protect active vent sites from direct and indirect effects of seafloor mining (Van Dover et al., 2018). Mitigating the adverse effects of mining on these ecosystems may prove to be one of the greatest challenges facing the marine minerals industry. At the same time, there is increasing evidence that inactive or extinct hydrothermal systems, which do not host the density or diversity of animals typical of active vents, may constitute a significant proportion of the SMS resource potential on the seafloor. Mining inactive SMS deposits may therefore present an extractive opportunity that does not necessitate the disturbance or destruction of active vent habitats. However, if mining of SMS deposits is to take place only at inactive vent sites in order to protect active vent ecosystems, a clear definition of what defines a site as active or inactive is necessary. ACTIVE AND INACTIVE SEAFLOOR MASSIVE SULFIDE DEPOSITS Our understanding of the number of inactive deposits, their size and grades, and how they are preserved on the seafloor remains limited, largely due to the challenges associated with finding these deposits. Over 90% of all hydrothermal vent fields discovered so far are hydrothermally-active. Almost all of these sites were discovered through the detection of chemical anomalies associated with active hydrothermal venting via water column surveys. Inactive sites have no associated hydrothermal plume, and thus the well- established plume survey exploration method is not effective. As a result, very few truly inactive sites inactive sites have been discovered. Alternative exploration methods, such as spontaneous potential (SP) surveys, magnetic surveys, and high-resolution mapping are required (Cherkashev et al., 2013; Jamieson et al., 2014; Tivey and Johnson, 2002). As methods for locating inactive deposits continue to develop, our understanding of the distribution and resource potential of these deposits will increase, and the focus of resource exploration will shift from active to inactive vent sites. However, for now, most exploration and deposit development activities remain focused on active vent fields.

A detailed study of texture developmenf in poly crystalline copper atzd 70-30 brass has been completed. Textural changes as a function of deformation are shoum by pole jigmres and by intensity measurements oF- various rejlectiotzs from the rolling plane and the rolling direction. These examinations were accompanied by measurements of stacking fault frequency, hardness changes, and microstructure. Some of the results were briefly presented earlier. Additional results reported here are consistent with the idea that deformation faulting or slip by partial dislocations is of primary importance in the formation of deformation textures in fcc metals. lo examine the idea that deformation faulting is of primary importance in determining whether the texture is the copper type or the brass type an extensive study of the development of polycrystalline textures in copper and 70-30 brass was initiated. Besides the determination of complete pole figures, the intensities of the various reflections from both the rolling plane and the plane perpendicular to the rolling direction, the peak shifts due to deformation stacking faults, and the hardness of the rolled specimens were examined at various reductions from 10 to 99 or 99.5 pct. Mi-crostructures were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Some of the results were briefly presented in an earlier publication.&apos; Since then, additional information has been obtained. This is given in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material and Specimen Preparation. The material used was a commercial electrolytic copper bar 1i in. wide and 2 in. thick and a 70-30 brass bar la in. wide and 1i in. thick. Chemical analysis indicated a purity of 99.97 pct for the copper, with 0.025 pct 0 as the major impurity. The 70-30 brass was of higher purity with 0.0016 pct 0 as the major impurity. Extreme care was taken in the preparation of the starting material to insure uniformly fine grains with a nearly random initial texture. The two bars were first cold-forged and then annealed to eliminate any original texture. The grains were then refined by several cold rolling (approx 30 pct reduction) and annealing treatments. The + -hr anneals were carried out in a salt bath at 390" to 440°C for copper and at 490°C for brass. The resulting penultimate grain size was 0.06 mm for copper and 0.03 mm for brass, and both showed very little preferred orientation. The number of prior cold rolling and annealing cycles was such that the final thickness after various final reductions of 10 to 95 (for brass) or 99 (for copper) pct was the same (0.020 in.). These annealed strips were rolled in two directions by reversing end for end between passes according to the following schedule: 0.006 in. per pass to 0.100 in., 0.003 in. per pass to 0.050 in., 0.002 in. per pass to 0.025 in., 0.001 in. per pass to 0.020 in. Texture Determination. The development of rolling textures was studied by examining complete pole figures determined from the (111) reflection. Specimens thinned from one face of the strip to half thickness (0.010 in.) were used to obtain the central portion of the pole figures, while specimens thinned from both faces to 0.003 in. were used to obtain the peripheral portion. The reflection and transmission techniques have been described previously. In addition to X-rav pole figures, texture development was also studied b; examining the intensity variation of the (Ill), (200), (2201, (311), (331), (420), and (442) reflections from the rolling plane and from the plane normal to the rolling direction, as a function of deformation. The same specimens used for the central portion of the pole figures were used for the intensity measurements of the various reflections from the rolling plane. For intensity measurements from the plane normal to the rolling direction, composite specimens were prepared by mounting sections cut parallel to the transverse direction of the strip. An epoxy resin was used to bond these sections together, and the entire composite was then mounted in a cold-setting resin to facilitate subsequent polishing and etching to remove distorted metal at the cut. The intensities were expressed in units of the integrated intensities measured from an annealed copper specimen having almost no preferred orientation. Stacking Fault Frequency Determination. Following the analysis of Warren: the stacking fault frequency, a, was determined from the change in the peak separation (A%) of two neighboring reflections of a deformed specimen, as compared with the normal peak separations of a fully annealed specimen. To obtain sufficient intensities for the second-order reflections, (222) and (400), composite specimens were prepared from parallel sections cut from the strip at 30 deg to the rolling direction for copper and 25 deg for the brass.* From texture data, these sections are known to contain a large population of both (111) and (200) planes. Since residual stresses can also cause X-ray line shifts (the direction of line shifts depends upon the sign of the stress), the use of composite specimens consisting of sectioned planes should help compensate for these effects as the residual stresses change sign from the surface to the central section of a rolled strip. Much of the aggregate that is being exploited at present from these areas is a ?relic? deposit. It was originally eroded from primary source rocks and transported to a depositional centre by processes that are now either greatly reduced in effectiveness or are largely absent at the present time. Following the retreat of the Devensian ice sheet, the subsequent rise of sealevel and the drowning of large areas of the continental shelf along with the lower reaches of many rivers, a fresh sequence of sediment sources, pathways and sinks now exist. Sediment is being eroded from several, pre-existing source areas and transported along different, well - defined pathways to a number of new depositional sinks. Some of the present, licenced, aggregate dredging areas lie close to these sources, pathways and sinks with the consequent dredging activity being perceived by some as interfering with the ?natural process? that links the offshore and the coastal / littoral zones. With this perception in mind, the principal, sources, pathways and sinks between Flamborough Head and Beachy Head will be highlighted and the relationship of dredging activity upon them, evaluated. It will be demonstrated that offshore dredging activity has no effect upon supplies of sediment to coastal beaches.

A possível sensitização nas zonas termicamente afetadas (ZTA) e os seus efeitos nas propriedades mecânicas das juntas foram avaliados por meio de metalografia e ensaios de tração e corrosão. Observou-se um crescimento dos contornos de grão com a ocorrência de valas na ZTA e a presença de precipitados sensitizados. Também se registrou um limite de resistência e alongamento maiores nas amostras de soldagem manual do que na automática. Concluiu-se que quanto maior o aporte de calor na soldagem, maior o tempo de exposição da ZTA a altas temperaturas, maiores os contornos de grão, menores a resistência mecânica e a ductilidade das juntas. Adicionalmente, a precipitação de carbonetos e nitretos nos contornos de grão comprovou a influência térmica sobre a sensitização.

Based on a generic description of the innovation process and the innovation system, the paper has used the development of modern tunnel drilling in the Norwegian tunnelling industry to discuss the characteristics of its innovation system with a focus on human capital issues and knowledge management.

EXTENSIVE and diversified resources justify large populations and great industries. To carry on the business of commerce and meet the demands of large populations, the utilization of tunnels in some form for transportation purposes constitutes an important link in modern civilization. The driving of tunnels has been appropriated by the tunneling branch of the heavy-construction industry, and the progressive steps taken by modern tunnel builders were not even dreamed of 50 years ago. Great strides have been made toward more rapid progress in tunneling in the United States during the past 10 years. Tunneling consists of a definite cycle of operations developed from ideas that are crystallized and translated into action programs through various engineering phases that begin with the first preliminary survey and do not end until the job is completed. Once the line of the bore is established and a time set for the completion of the work, the face must advance according to estimates prepared before the work commences. This schedule must be followed in regular sequence from the moment the drills start against a new face of rock until they are ready again to drill the succeeding face, constituting a round.1 Mining is largely tunneling carried on under conditions often more inherently hazardous than actual tunnel construction, but for various reasons1 tunneling is more hazardous than mining in any branch of the mineral industry, On the other hand, obstacles are sometimes encountered in heavy-construction tunneling projects that when met in mining enterprises do not offer comparable tasks to avoid or overcome them. One of these is the existence of water under high pressures. In mining enterprises, various alternatives offer a solution in driving a tunnel, even to the extent of its discontinuance or the abandonment of the mine, but a "construction" tunnel usually must go forward because some important project depends largely if not entirely upon it. This paper describes an unusual method of driving a water-supply tunnel through rock carrying water under pressures and conditions that did not permit the use of ordinary tunneling methods. THE DELAWARE AQUEDUCT The new Delaware aqueduct is a Manhattan project of some magnitude; when completed, it will contain what probably will be, for some time to come, the longest tunnel in the world. Various features in its construction are currently described in the trade journals of the construction industry, and informative engineering details are given in the Delaware Water Supply News, published twice a month by the Board of Water Supply of the City of New York. Work was begun on this project on March 24, 1937. The tunnel will convey water from reservoirs at the headwaters of the Delaware River to the City of New York.

RBH Note: The following items are a deviation from the usual content of these articles, but I thought they were kind of interesting from an historical point of view (other than just explosives-history historical.) The interesting things to me are the military-related products, keeping in mind that World War I didn’t start until August, 1914, and then it was kind of an accident of political alliances gone awry. Obviously companies in Germany saw it coming. Of course, all the ads also included dynamite and safety explosives for mining and tunneling as well as the military items.
