This paper reviews some of the factors involved in selecting amine flotation reagents used to remove silica from ores. A comparison is made between the chemical reagent design approaches used to identify flotation reagents that are used to recover silica- and oxygen-containing minerals and the chemical reagents used to recover sulfide minerals. This introduction gives practitioners who are involved with oxide- and carbonate-type minerals and who may not be familiar with sulfide mineral flotation some ideas of the chemical reagent design challenges that exist with froth flotation on a broader scale and why oxide type mineral flotation reagents are what they are. This is followed by several sections that discuss various classes of available amines. The closing sections emphasize that the optimal choice of an amine collector depends not only on that amine's specific chemical characteristics and costs but also on the operating conditions, especially the flotation feed particle size distribution.

No entanto, entre aproximadamente 650 e 850ºC, observa-se uma mudança indesejável no modo de fratura da superliga, que caracteriza a fratura intergranular assistida por oxidação. Com as temperaturas de operação em cada vez maiores e uma alta demanda por eficiência energética, a fragilização pelo ambiente é uma grande limitação a aplicação da superliga. Por isso, o objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar o fenômeno através de ensaios de tração a quente em diferentes taxas de deformação e por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e EDS. A faixa de temperatura de ocorrência do fenômeno, segundo a evidência de fratura frágil intergranular variou conforme a taxa aplicada, manifestando-se entre 650 e 750ºC até 900ºC em todos os casos. O efeito da disponibilidade de oxigênio foi observado e o elemento não demonstrou ser determinante na perda de propriedades mecânicas avaliadas em tração. O nióbio, presente em quantidade considerável na liga, apareceu predominantemente como NbC nos contornos e interior dos grãos, incorporado ao titânio na região de fratura, com aspecto fragmentado. Acredita-se, portanto, que este tenha papel decisivo no processo de fragilização.

Ice frozen from a dilute chemical solution is mechanically weaker than ice frozen from pure water. This phenomenon is the basis of a practical method for reducing the strength of a mass of frozen coal. If a chemical additive is applied to moist coal prior to its shipment during freezing weather, the resulting frozen coal can be more easily broken than in the absence of the chemical additive. This greatly expedites the unloading and handling of coal during winter. There has been considerable research into the nature and mechanical strength of ice frozen from various solutions. In this paper, literature relating to this process as well as literature relating to the chemical treatment of coal and mineral particulates is reviewed. Some important articles are discussed and speculations made about the nature of the ice-weakening process. A laboratory evaluation of the effects of chemical additives on the mechanical strength of ice and frozen coal has been made. An apparatus designed for this purpose is described, and some results obtained with it are discussed.

"INTRODUCTIONGold is found in many natural states, native nuggets, loose grain in river sands, veins in rock, as well as associated with sulphides, oxides, etc., disseminated more or less minutely.Its high value in recent years has spawned new technologies to win values from sources once considered too lean for commercial recovery. Cyanide leaching from fine milled ore or tailings, from upstream recovery operations, coupled with adsorption onto relatively coarse granules of activated carbon, concentrate the gold enough to be converted to bullion by time-honoured methods.The carbon granules are fragile. Size degradation in handling must be minimized not only to prevent loss of gold on fine fragments of carbon that could pass with the barren tailings, but to maintain adsorption efficiency. Besides, the granulated carbon itself is costly. Circular Vibroscreens are winning acceptance for dewatering carbon granules thanks to their gentle yet effective performance in gold recovery systems around the world. The system at Equity Silver is illustrative.BackgroundEquity Silver Mines Ltd., Houston, British Columbia, first began production in September 1980. In 1984, a feasibility study showed that additional gold and silver could be economically recovered through cyanide leaching of the flotation tailing.Although the carbon-in-pulp (ClP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) process is commonly used for extracting precious metals from slurries, the use of circular vibrating screens, and Vibroscreens in particular, for the carbon circuit is an innovation that cuts costs.Rectangular vibrating screens have been the conventional separation mechanism of choice across North America. In contrast, the use of Vibroscreens has been proven to be less costly for the initial purchase and installation. Also, these circular vibrating screens require less power and less space. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulation 10 CFR 60 requires that the ventilation system for the geologic repository be designed to: (1) control the transport of radioactive particulates and gases, (2) assure continued function during normal operations and under accident conditions, and (3) separate the ventilation of excavation and emplacement areas. The ventilation system design should take into account thermal loading; maintenance of the retrieval option and-the separation of the development and emplacement ventilation circuits. An analysis was performed by NRC's contractor, Engineers International on the ventilation system design described in the Department of Energy's conceptual design for Nevada. The ventilation analysis is of a preliminary nature. The conclusions presented in this paper reflect the views of the authors and may not represent the views of the NRC. In this analysis, available Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigation (NNWSI) ventilation design information was reviewed and a ventilation network analysis was performed.

The first rule of mineral deposits always seems to be: the deposit is never close to the market. With gems and precious metals, this is not much of a problem. But with most of the mineral commodities used in today's world, transportation becomes a major part of the cost to the consumer. In Japan, for example, more than 60% of the cost of coal to the consumer may be attributed to transportation. The purpose of this article is to examine pipeline transportation, particularly mineral slurry pipelines, as a means of getting the mineral to market. Pipelines Today Regulated pipelines in the US totaled nearly 724 Mm (450,000 miles) in 1980 according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Worldwide, more than 210 Mm (125,000 miles) of new pipelines will start construction in 1982 at an estimated cost of more than $150 billion. According to the Bechtel Corp., the period between 1982 and 2000 will see major growth in pipelines of all kinds. In North America, major movements of crude oil from Alaska and synfuels from the Rocky Mountains will require the construction of nearly 16 Mm (10,000 miles) of new pipelines. Nearly 42 Mm (26,000 miles) of new gas transmission pipelines will be needed to tap both US and Canadian arctic gas fields and move the gas to major markets on both coasts. Other pipelines will be required to move additional quantities of natural gas from the Rocky Mountains to more populous regions. Bechtel says more than 24 Mm (15,000 miles) of slurry pipelines will be needed to transport coal from both eastern and western coal provinces to the Mississippi valley and coastal areas. In 1980, 125 companies delivered more than 1 km3 (6.5 billion bbl) of crude oil and 652 hm3 (4.1 billion bl) of products in the US. At the same time natural gas pipelines transported 498 km3 (17.6 trillion cu ft). The reported investment by these companies was nearly $20 billion at the end of 1980. Advantages of Pipeline Transportation The obvious success and vitality of the oil and gas pipeline industry is based, at least in part, on the fact that pipelines are a very efficient and low-cost method of transportation. This fact, coupled with the need for lower cost trans¬portation, has led to the marriage of oil and gas transmission technology and the bulk mineral solids transportation industry. The off-spring of this marriage is the mineral slurry pipeline. Slurry pipelines have a number of advantages over other transportation methods. One of these is the fact that they are buried-out-of-sight, out-of-mind. Second, they are relatively small users of labor because they lend themselves to automation and remote, or even computer control. Third, they offer an attractive economic alternative to other transportation systems. For example, for a 1000 km (621 miles) distance, rail costs of 1?/ km (1.7?/ton-mile) are about equivalent to slurry pipeline costs. But, as the distance increases, pipeline cost per t-km continues to drop while equivalent rail charges remain essentially insensitive to distance. Where existing rail, barge, or ocean ships are available, the cost of new construction associated with a slurry pipeline probably will render it noncompetitive. However, where new rail or other construction is needed, the cost of a slurry pipeline is very competitive. About three-fourths of the cost of a pipeline is in pipe, fittings, and construction. Nearly a fifth of the investment is in pump stations and the remainder is in right-of-way, surface facilities, utility acquisition, communication facilities, and other support areas. The fact that pipelines are capital intensive is, at the present time, a mixed blessing. For example, the delivered cost of coal in a hypothetical project doubles when the cost of money rises from 9% to 17.5% per year. The largest cost element for delivered coal in this example is in depreciation and finance charges. The next largest cost element is electricity to power the pumps, with labor making up the smallest increment of the delivered cost of coal. World Slurry Pipelines The idea of a slurry pipeline was probably first investigated in the latter 19th century, but the first ones were successfully built and operated in the US in the early 1900s. Today, they are fairly common worldwide. Table 1 shows a number of the world's slurry pipelines. An examination of these will further emphasize the fact that pipelines provide a cost competitive alternative where new construction of a transportation system is required. In each of the examples, the desired mineral commodity is located in a remote corner of the world, markets are at a great distance, value of the commodity is not great, and no other transport system is available.

An apparatus was constructed for the measurement of inter-facial tensions over a range of temperatures and pressures. This apparatus utilized the pendent drop method, and resembles in construction similar apparatus recently described in the literature and in use in some petroleum research laboratories. The interfacial tensions of benzene, propane, n-pentane, n-hexane. n-octane. and iso-octane against water were measured at temperatures ranging from 26" to 82" C and at pressures ranging from 1 to 204 atm. Values of interfacial tensions for the henzene-water system and their variations with temperature and pressure are generally in good agreement with value? of previous investigations. The data in all cases showed a slight decrease of interfacial tension with pressure at constant temperature in the range studied. The effect of pressure became less as the pressure was increased, with an indication of a reversal of the effect at higher pressures. There was a decrease of interfacial tension with temperature at constant pressure in all cases, as would normally be expected. This rate of decrease became greater the higher the temperature. A general equation is presented for the interfacial tensions as a function of presPurp and temperature over the range studied, and the constants calculated for each system. A definite trend was found in the effect of molecular weight on the interfacial tension at a given temperature and pressure, for the homologous series from propane to n-octane. Data for n-decane from the literature fitted well into this trend. INTRODUCTION It has been recognized for many years that surface forces play an active part in the production history of an oil reservoir as well as in determining the amount of unrecoverable oil. The magnitudes of these forces are governed by the values of the interfacial tensions. These vary greatly with composition, pressure, and temperature. The effect of composition is greater than that of pressure and temperature over the ranges normally encountered. In fact, because of the variety of compounds present in a crude, no attempt has yet been made to correlate crude composition with its surface tension or with its interfacial tension against water. The amount of dissolved methane greatly affects the surface properties of an oil, and there are "surface-active" compounds in crudes which have a much greater effect on boundary tensions than do equal amounts of hydrocarbons. Blasting techniques, which have been used for a long time in Turkey, are powerful and economical tool in producing raw material in mining, quarrying, construction .etc. industries. The development of the society within the world has resulted in a substantial increase in the scale of such industrial projects. However, the expansion of such activity has been matched by an increased public awareness of environmental issues, particularly when it occurs in relatively close proximity to residential areas. One of the most troublesome issues facing the mining, quarrying and construction industries when carrying out their blasting activities is that of ground vibration. Because, blasting induced ground vibration can reach to very far distances from the source and has the potential for damage to concern to the inhabitants of property.

Veins at St. Lawrence near the tip of the Burin Peninsula in southeast New/ oundland have been the major Canadian source of fluorspar. Some 2.8 million tonnes were shipped during the period 1933-1977, mostly from five of the more than forty veir.s known. Most of the veins occur in granite. individual veins may be several km in length, comprising a number of mineable lenses up to 760 m long and 25 111 thick. Fluorite content averages about 50 per cent, but may exceed 90 per cent locally. Quartz, calcite, barite and a few sulphides are the other vein constituents. Jn recent years, gravity concentrates were shipped to a flotation plant at Arvida, Quebec, where the fluorspar concentrate was used as a flux in the making of alum in um. Competition f rom Mexican fluorspar was a major factor in the closure of the mines. Ample reserves are available should economic conditions improve.

INTRODUCTION Feasibility studies indicated that a cratering type stoping method was best suited to the character of the first ore block at Carr Fork. This method known as vertical crater retreat (VCR) has since been modified to a combination cratering and deck blasting using VCR drop raises for initial undercut development . The modified form retains many of the advantages of VCR while allowing high tonnage production blasts which have offset many of the disadvantages. FIRST CONCEPTS AND PREMISES Geologic Considerations The Steep Highland Boy (SHB) skarn orebody, the first of several blocks being developed, is a steeply dipping 70° to 90° limb of a syncline, with a width averaging 25 m (82 ft). The bed has a consistent east-west strike length of over 400 m (1300 ft) and extends from the surface to depths of over 1000 m (3300 ft). The footwall is highly fractured quartzite and the hanging wall grades from garneti te to limes tone and hornfe 1s. Because of the limestone in the hanging wall, the hanging wall appears more competent than the footwall. The ore is garnetite with lenses of massive sulphide and magnetite. The quartzite footwall is highly fractured not only because of the bedding but also due to the folding and intrusion of the quartz monzonite. This irregular footwall outline of some stopes in- creases the likelihood of excessive dilution. The principal ore mineral is chalcopyrite with some bornite. The garnetite ore is quite variable in terms of compressive strength and drillability. In addition to the sulphide and magnetite lenses, it is transected by clay- altered dikes and major and minor north-east faults. TABLE (1) gives the range and mean strengths of the rocks. Investigating Mining Methods Initial consideration of a suitable mining method centered around maximum safety and efficiency with minimum potential dilution. The following major methods were considered and investigated. Cut and fill mining was eliminated because of low productivity, the cost and problems associated with providing fill, and the relatively unsafe nature of the method. Sublevel caving was rejected due to the unpredictable cavability of the waste and the geometry of the ore body. Conventional sublevel or blasthole methods require excessive development, as fan and ring drills are limited to efficient drilling in the 18 to 25 m range (60 to 80 ft). Mining downdip with equipment drilling small diameter holes would have required eight separate extraction/drill horizons with crosscuts and associated excavation in the main ore block. There have been major changes in the makeup and nature of the uranium exploration industry in recent years. Significant price increases precipitated an increase in exploration activity-according to the Department of Energy, exploratory drilling in 1977, by 140 companies, was almost 8 million m (26 million ft). This represents a 37% increase over the prior year's drilling. Projections for 1978 indicate at least 9 million m (30 million ft) of exploratory holes will be drilled in the US. Exploration expenditures in 1979, including land acquisition, drilling, and other costs, were estimated by DOE at over $236 million. Domestic expenditures for 1978 are estimated at over $250 million.

In all, 210 wellst were completed in southwestern Pennsylvania during 1939, which is 59 more than were drilled during the preceding year. Of this number, 137 were gas wells, which is a considerable increase from the 81 completed during 1938. Only 25 oil wells were completed, as against 28 in the previous year, and 28 dry holes, 6 more than last year. Shallow Development—Gas The increase in the number of gas wells is largely the result of a search for additional gas in Armstrong and Indiana Counties. Although a considerable number of wells were drilled in the latter county, the majority of them produced less than 100 M cu. ft. initial open flow. In Armstrong County, a new pool was opened in Cowanshannock township, producing from the third Bradford sand. Several large wells were obtained there, one of which produced an initial of nearly 12 million cu. ft., with a reservoir pressure of 1100 Ib. However, the productive area has been fairly well outlined by further drilling and shows that the pool covers only about 800 acres. The sand is 20 to 30 ft. thick, and probably has 5 to 6 ft. of pay. Thus this reserve is not an important one. Several wells were found in Menallen township, Fayette County, where the Big Injun sand has been having a play for the past three years, but the activity there is much less than a year ago. Oil On the west side of the Bradford sand gas pool, Cowanshannock township, Armstrong County, a well was drilled which flowed 100 bbl. the first day from the Tiona sand. This paper presents the lessons learnt during the transition from an open pit method to a sub-level open stoping method at the Koidu Limited kimberlite pipe. These learnings may assist other mines with planning, both from a practical implementation perspective (layout, charging up challenges), and a method for estimating potential dilution and stability challenges associated with the interaction between the surface and underground excavations. Predictive geotechnical stability modelling was successfully applied to highlight potential failure zones, which allowed modification and enhancement of the mining layouts and quantification of the potential dilution of the kimberlite from indicative instabilities.

In recent years the column flotation process has gained worldwide acceptance for processing various types of minerals under different circuit configurations. In an age when real prices of many mineral commodities are in decline and mining and labour costs are rising in real terms, it is more important than ever that concentration processes be not only efficient but also cost-effective. The column flotation process can give better metallurgical performance as well as involve lower capital and operating costs compared to conventional mechanical cells.This paper reviews the literature on columns and the effects of various column parameters on performance of the column flotation process. The history and principles of operation of the column flotation process are briefly discussed by way of introduction.

This paper descrioes a case history of a coal mine which developed un'tahle roof conditions due to mass sliding of the overburden strata on a claystone band within the coal seam. The sliding is believed to have been initiated by stress relief associated with the removal of overburden alongside the entry portal of the underground workings. Once in motion, the roof block was kept moving by bulking due to roof collapse in the normal underground goafing operations. Control measures in the form of an earth and rockfill buttress against the entry portal and a sequential mining plan to create goaf areas alongside the entry portal have been initiated to attempt to limit movement. The operation has been continually monitored and a gradually decreasing pattern of movement is being re, orded.

The trend toward utilization of low grade iron ores means that more efficient methods must be developed for their concentration. The collecting ability of fatty acids derived from fish oils has been extensively investigated by Cooke.' Tuna oil, a byproduct of the tuna canning industry, is one of the lower priced fish oils. Utilization of tuna oil fatty acids as collectors in the flotation of iron ore might be economically feasible under certain market conditions, especially if their efficiency were high. Crude or unfractionated tuna oil fatty acids, and five fractions derived therefrom, were tested for their ability to concentrate a commercial specularite ore from northern Michigan. A commercial fatty acid derived from tall oil, and commonly used in nonsulfide flotation, was used as a reference. The crude fatty acids were obtained by simple saponification of tuna oil. Fractions A and B were obtained by acetone precipitation of the crude acids at -5O and -2S°C, respectively. Fraction C was obtained by a partial fractional distillation at 12S°C and at a pressure of 3y in a centrifugal molecular still in order to remove the shortest and longest chain fatty acids of tuna oil as well as oxidation products present in the original mixture. Fractions D and E were prepared by a chilling process in order to precipitate the unwanted saturated fatty acids.
