Batch and continuous - circuit flotation , leaching , precipitation , and electrodeposition studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions for treatment of complex mercury - antimony sulfide and mercury- arsenic sulfide ores and concentrates . On the Red Devil ore sample over 95 percent of both the mercury and antimony sulfides were recovered in a flotation concentrate containing 35.6 percent mercury and 21.0 percent antimony . By selective flotation a mercury concentrate containing 71.0 percent mercury and 2.9 percent antimony was obtained with a mercury recovery of 90.4 percent . Leaching results show that , with 150 grams per liter of sodium sulfide and 50 grams per liter of sodium hydroxide , 95 to 99 percent of the mercury , antimony , and arsenic sulfides could be extracted from the concentrates treated . Sodium hydroxide reagent consumption was based on the sulfides generated in the dissolution of the sulfide minerals and on the method of metal recovery used . Selective leaching of the antimony and arsenic sulfides with potassium sulfide dissolved more than 95 percent of either of these two sulfides and 0.5 to 5 percent of the mercury sulfide present . Methods for recovering mercury and antimony from solution were electrodeposition of mercury followed by electrodeposition of antimony , aluminum precipitation of both mercury and antimony , or antimony precipitation of mercury followed by antimony electrodeposition . According to the Project Independence blueprint, a 270 percent increase in coal production is expected from western coal fields compared to an increase of 100 percent for the nation as a whole. Furthermore, 30 percent of the total United States coal reserves lie in the western states, which are classified as beyond the strippable limits and can be recovered only by underground methods. In view of the fact that the majority of the seams in the West are thicker than those presently mined in other parts of the country, it is important to consider the parameters that relate to mining thick seams and the factors that affect such mining systems. Apart from thick seams, a common feature of many western coal fields is the occurrence of multiple seams that lie in close proximity to one another. These multiple seam deposits present difficult mining problems that have not been encountered to any degree in other U.S. coal fields; for example, ground pressure changes in one mine level caused by mining in the other, sudden water or gas influx from the adjacent levels, the danger of spontaneous combustion in gobs and large and complex subsidence displacements on the surface. Perhaps equally important is the fact that the country can ill afford the present systems of underground mining that attain only 50 to 60 percent coal recovery. With the probability of increased thick seam mining, conservation shall be a focal point in future mine design systems. It is possible that in the future it will be forbidden to adopt the present day wasteful mining methods to ensure that coal can be conserved for future generations.

It is well known that the ash left when coal is burned is not the same either in chemical composition or in weight as the mineral matter originally present in the coal. This mineral matter has been referred to as "mineral impurity," "ash-forming constituents" and "corrected ash." The authors prefer the simple name used in the title and throughout this paper. The mineral matter in a sample of coal cannot be isolated unchanged and then weighed; but if the relation between the weight of mineral matter in the coal and the weight of ash remaining when the coal is burned can be ascertained, the weight of mineral matter in the sample can be calculated from the determined weight of ash. When the weight of mineral matter in the sample is known, the weight of pure coal can be found by subtraction. This pure coal must be the basis of accurate coal classification. W. F. Wheeler,l,3 W. Brinsmaid,2 S. W. Parr, and many subsequent workers have studied the relation between mineral matter and ash. Wheeler and Parr and others have deduced formulas for calculating this ratio, and used heavy-solution separations for checking the accuracy of their formulas. Brinsmaid hand-picked and analyzed two separate samples (and mixtures of these) and based thereon a graphical method of deducing the ratio. In the Fuel Testing Laboratories of the Scientific and Industrial Research Council of Alberta, a graphical method, based on heavy-solution fractionation of coal samples, has been used with marked success for the past 7¼ years for determining the mineral matter-ash ratio. This method resembles that employed by Brinsmaid in 1907.

HISTORY The history of mining in the Outokumpu Co. shows continuous development of small and medium-sized mines, coupled with a permanent improvement in min¬ing methods and mechanization. Tables 1 and 2 provide a brief outline of the major events over the years of operation. Some of the mines have had relatively short lives as in the case of Nivala, Korsnas, Kylmäkoski, the surface pits of the Kotalahti, Vuonos, and Hammaslahti mines, and some very small pits. The sequence in which the mines started opera¬tions is shown in Table 1 and production increases in Table 2. GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK Most of the ore deposits in Finland (see Fig. 1) are situated in middle Precambrian (1500 to 2300 m.y.) formations corresponding to the Baltic shield. The ores and country rocks are generally firm, with a minimum compressive strength of 60 MPa (8700 psi). The sulfide ores, of importance to the national econ¬omy, can be divided into copper-nickel deposits, asso¬ciated with basic and ultrabasic rocks (1900 m.y.), and the sulfide ores found in well-preserved Svecokarelidic crystalline schists (1800 to 2300 m.y.) which contain varying amounts of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and lead. Over 90% of the sulfide ore mined to date in Fin¬land and existing in the known ore reserves belongs to deposits situated in the main sulfide ore belt. The main sulfide ore belt includes the Outokumpu copper-zinc, the Kotalahti nickel-copper, the Pyhäsalmi copper-zinc, and the Vihanti zinc ore zones. The Outokumpu ore district occurs in a mica schist area about 60 x 100 km, in association with belts of metamorphic Svecokarelidic quartzites, black schists, dolomites, skarn rocks, and serpentinites. The main ore minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. In addition there are nickel and cobalt minerals such as cubanite and cobalt-pentlandite, which have been of economic importance. In this area, Outokumpu Oy exploits the deposits at Keretti and Vuonos. The latter was discovered as an extension of the Keretti ore field about 6 km to the northeast. The Kotalahti geological formation extends across nearly 400 km. The host rock of these mostly pipelike deposits is generally serpentinite, pyroxenite, or norite. The main ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In this zone, the deposits of Kotalahti, Hitura, and Virtasalmi are at present under exploitation by Outokumpu Oy. The Vihanti geological formation is located in west¬ern Finland and is about 40 km wide and some 200 km long. The rock associations are crystalline schists including dolomites, mica schists, mica gneisses, gray¬wacke, and acidic or basic volcanic rocks, which change generally, in connection with the mineralization, into skarn and cordierite-anthophyllite rocks. The host rocks are dolomite, skarn, graywacke, and quartzitic rock and the principal minerals are sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The accessory minerals are mainly cubanite, arsenopyrite, molybdenite, and native gold and silver. The two largest ore bodies being exploited at pres¬ent by Outokumpu Oy are the Vihanti mine, which pro¬duces zinc, lead, and copper, and Pyhäsalmi, which con¬tains copper and zinc. MEMBERS of the Engineering Education Committee held two meetings at Joplin preliminary to the opening of the main meeting there. The first was held on Sunday afternoon. It was attended by all who had arrived early enough and as among the dozen or' fifteen who were present the heads of a half dozen schools of mines were included it was a representative gathering. C: H. Fulton, chairman of the Committee presided and T. T. Read acted as secretary of the meeting. The chair., man reminded those present that last year there had been some discussion as to the advisability of the proposal, made by Edward Steidle, that a, separate society, devoted to education in the mineral industry, he organized. Many .people had felt that there are already so many societies in existence to demand one's time and attention, that it would be a mistake to add to their number and the counter suggestion had been made that the work of this committee could be so reorganized as to meet all the needs that a separate society could fill. He therefore presented for discussion these four' questions: (1) Shall a subcommittee .be appointed to study, and report in February, 1932, the possibility of the reorganization of the work of the Engineering Education Committee into the equivalent of an' Institute division; (2) if the work is so reorganized what shall be the relation of the work of the Committee (division) to the work of the-Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education; (3.): what are the, cardinal objectives of education for the mineral industry; and (4) what should be done as regards the movement in some institutions to plan their work-in the light of that being done in other institutions, for example, in geophysics?

Single crystals of tungsten were made and deformed in tension at 3000°C. The slip traces so formed on these crystals were analysed to determine the apparent slip system. Results indicate that deformation occurs in the<III> direction on planes of maximum shear stress. This determination agrees with the early work of Taylor and Elam on other body-centered cubic crystals at lout temperatures. SLIP in face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed metals has consistently manifested itself in straight traces which indicate that glide takes place on planes of highest atomic density and in directions of closest packing. The slip traces observed on body-centered cubic metals are, on the other hand, frequently branched and wavy, and indicate that while glide takes place in the direction of closest packing, it does not necessarily choose the plane of highest density. The early work of Taylor and Elam1 4 indicated that glide took place in the close-packed direction on planes close to those defined by the maximum shear stress. Subsequent investigations have tried to rationalize these observations in terms of an elementary process on the close-packed planes (110). For example, Elam5 and Grenin~er&apos; have suggested alternate glide on nonparallel (110) planes with the observed result that the summation of these glides results in a trace which defines some plane other than{110). Madden and chen7 have recently reviewed the phenomenological and theoretical aspects of noncrystallographic slip. More recently Koehler&apos; has presented a model of dislocation propagation which permits another rationalization. He indicated that dislocation loops are transferred from one glide plane to another by double cross-slip of screw segments. It is reasonable to assume that, on the average, such transfers may result in a trace which approaches the plane of maximum shear stress. The work described in this paper will show that

LOG washers have been used for many years in the washing of clay iron ores, phosphate rock and manganese ores, but not until the past 15 years have they been employed to any extent in the preparation of aggregate materials and fluxing stone. For a machine of such importance where tenacious clay or soft rock must be eliminated, there are few data generally available. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the results obtained from several operations, together with a few suggestions for planning a specific installation. Where the material to be washed out consists of loose surface soil, silt, or small amounts of quickly soluble clay, there is little competition with other forms of washers, because greater power and maintenance are required for the operation of log washers, but where the foreign matter is a stiff clay, such as occurs with high-calcium limestones and in marginal gravel deposits, the ability of other kinds of washers to eliminate com-pletely the hard clay balls is at least uncertain. Then the log washer comes into its own field, for with the breaking and churning action of the logs it will clean out the toughest clay. Even with material from the hydraulic dredge, if it contains tough clay, the log washer is desirable unless the gravel is subjected to a costly soaking and rehandling process. Recently there has been a considerable development in other types of machines to accomplish these results but it is not within the scope of this paper to make comparisons between competitive types, but to present the best obtainable data on log washers only. From the primitive design that gave it its name, a long log hewn from a tree, with paddles forged to shape from strap iron and attached by lag screws, the log washer has gradually been developed to the present all-steel type. As now manufactured, the log washer consists essentially of two built-up logs on which are mounted a series of paddles, carried by shafts fitted at the ends of the logs on bearings fastened outside the enclosing steel box, or trough, which is set at an angle of about 5° to 10° and into which the material is fed. A Honeywell TDC 2000 central process control system was installed at Rössing in 1984. The system controls the metallurgical operations from crushing to the finished product of uranium oxide and manufacture of sulphuric acid. The operation was previously controlled from nine separate local control rooms. The paper briefly reviews the design and commissioning of the control system on an operating plant and discusses the impact on manpower organisation and training needs. Development of the process control system during its first two years of operation is reviewed and a summary is given of the current status of computer control at Rössing. The impact of the new system on overall plant operation and performance efficiency is also briefly described. In conclusion, future developments of computer control and overall optimisation of metallurgical operations are reviewed.

This paper is concerned with the layout of a conveyor and beneficiation plant system involving several mines and a single point of delivery. The objective of the procedure is to locate the conveyor lines and beneficiation plants in an optimal manner considering the economics of scale inherent in both the transportation and beneficiation processes. Upon completion of the mining plan, the layout of the conveyor network is achieved through the principle of Steiner minimal trees. The optimal number and location of beneficiation plants for this layout are then determined using a sequential economic analysis based upon the flow of material from the individual sources to the ultimate destination. The practical aspects of the method and the advantages and disadvantages of its use are discussed to link the model to a practical problem.

Means of improving the U.S. Bureau of Mines Brattice Window Method have been investigated by Goodyear Aerospace Corporation (GAC). An extensive series of laboratory tests at GAC and a series of tests in three operating coal mines of the Bethlehem Mines Corporation were conducted. The GAC laboratory tests defined the window coefficients and the accuracy of the method using different measuring techniques for a range of window sizes and shapes with window areas from 0.0873 to 4.0 square feet for flow velocities through the windows of from 100 to 1000 FPM. The results indicated that for the range of window sizes and window flow velocities investigated a single window coefficient value can be used with little error for each window size and for each flow direction, for the investigated range of window flow velocities. The mine tests developed techniques for quickly erecting the Temporary Test Stopping (TTS) in a cross-out, making the measurements, taking down the TTS and moving it and the test equipment to the next cross-cut. The time period for the total cycle ranged from 15-45 minutes depending on the properties of the cross-cut&apos;s surfaces. The total weight of the TTS and test equipment carried by the two miners conducting the tests was approximately 40 pounds. Correlation was obtained between the sum of the leakage values past 10 consecutive individual stoppings using the brattice window method and the value for the difference in the airway flow values before and after the 10 consecutive stoppings when the value for the sum of the leakages for the 10 was significant when com¬pared to the airway flow values. The mine tests reiterated the importance of using the largest TTS window(s) consistant with making accurate anemometer measurements for the best results with the brattice window method.

Inspection, testing (including non destructive methods), maintenance and rope discard criteria are discussed. There are sane catments about rope installation methods and an appendix is included which outlines the appropriate statutory requirements for winding ropes in New South Wales (NSW).

During the casting of lead-silver anodes, variations in cooling rates result in the formation of an uneven microstructure. The slowly cooled areas (SCA) have a coarser microstructure than that of the remaining part (called "the general zone"). The effect of anode microstructure on the electrochemical behavior was investigated using galvanostatic, potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance techniques. The results show that the resistances for the two steps of the oxygen evolution reaction on the slowly cooled areas of Pb- Ag anodes are higher than that on the general zone. The double layer capacitance for the first step of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the pseudocapacitance of the second step of OER on SCA are smaller than those on the general zone. The potentiodynamic results show that the amount of lead dioxide formed on the SCA is greater than that of the general zone of the anode. The potential decay curves after 30 minutes of galvanostatic polarization at 45 mA/cm2 show that the corrosion potential of the SCA is 200 mV lower than that of the general zone. This can lead to perforation because of the formation of a galvanic cell with a small anode and a large cathode.

This project investigates the behavior of blast waves from the detonation of high explosives in an underground mine. A series of explosive tests was conducted in the underground and surface facilities at the Bureau of Mines' Lake Lynn Laboratory to evaluate the potentially dangerous effects of blast waves produced by open shooting, blown out holes, or accidental detonations of explosives. Shots of C4 and TNT were fired at the dead end of a 6 ft high by 20ft wide entry, at the intersection of two entries, and on the surface. C4 and TNT were chosen for this research because they exhibit very consistent performance. Behavior of the blast wave was evaluated through recording of the pressure as a function of distance from the explosive detonation.

Konkan Railway Project is one of the most ambitious railway construction projects in India, involving construction of a 760.km long, Broad Gauge (1676 mm), single track railway line, connecting Roha in Maharashtra State with Mangalore in Kamataka State. The railway line travels along the Western Coast of Indian subcontinent, through states of Maharashtra (382 km), Goa (105 km) and Karnataka (273 km) (Fig.1). The project alignment traverses through one of the most formidable terrains ever encountered, in the history of railway construction in India. In the State of Goa only, railway alignment is crossing 6 major rivers Terekhol, Chapora, Mandovi, Zuari, Sal and Talpona. Zuari Railway Bridge (1305.6 m), Mandovi Railway Bridges (I and II) (1182.7 m) rank as 2nd and 3rd long bridges, (first longest bridge being Sharavati Bridge (2.2 km} at Honavar) which have been constructed on Konkan Railway. All these three bridges have been constructed by M/s.Asia Foundations and Constructions Ltd. (AFCONS). This paper presents, case history of construction of pile/caisson foundations for Zuari and Mandovi Bridges.

Zeolites are crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicates of the alkali and alkaline-earth metals. Their crystalline framework is based on a three dimensional network of SiO4 tetrahedra with all four oxygens shared by adjacent tetrahedra. The alkali and alkaline-earth cations are loosely bound within this framework structure and may be exchanged, to varying degrees, with other cations or molecular water. Most zeolites can be reversibly dehydrated. At present, close to 40 natural zeolite minerals have been identified and over 100 zeolites have been synthesized. Zeolites are a family of hydrous aluminosilicate minerals whose physical properties provide unique features for a wide variety of practical applications. Zeolites have been known for more than 200 years, but it was not until the middle of this century that their economic potential and widespread occurrence in sedimentary rocks were known. Since 1950, literally thousands of articles and patents have appeared in technical literature, and commercial pro¬duction of natural zeolites may now exceed 1 Mt worldwide an¬nually. In the past 40 years, the zeolite mineral group has changed from that of a museum curiosity to one of an established industrial mineral commodity. According to Breck (1974), zeolites are characterized by the following properties: 1) High degree of hydration, 2) Low density and large void volume when dehydrated, 3) Stability of the crystal structure of many zeolites when dehydrated, 4) Cation exchange properties, 5) Uniform molecular-sized channels in the dehydrated crys¬tals, 6) Ability to adsorb gases and vapors, 7) Catalytic properties. All zeolites are molecular sieves, but not all molecular sieves are zeolites. Activated carbon, activated clays, alumina powder, and silica gels are also molecular sieves. Molecular sieves are materials that can selectively adsorb molecules on the basis of their size, shape, or electrical charge (Clifton, 1987). Commercial application of zeolites is based on the following physical properties: molecular sieving, ion exchange, adsorption, and catalysis. Potential commercial utilization includes hundreds of possible applications. The principal uses at this time, however, are as fol¬lows: -Ammonium-ion removal in waste stream treatment, sewage treat¬ment, pet litter, and aquaculture, -Odor control, -Heavy metal ion removal from nuclear, mine and industrial wastes, -Agricultural use, such as soil conditioner and animal feed supplement. An estimated 800 kt to 1 Mt of natural zeolites were produced and consumed worldwide in 1991. Eight small operators reported collective production and consumption of an estimated 18 kt of natural zeolites in the United States during 1991, mostly for feed additives and for odor control, aquacultural, agricultural, catalytic, and ion exchange applications (Eyde, 1992).

IN ORDER to comprehend the help and information that may be expected from electrical prospecting, it is necessary to have at least a general knowledge of the methods and principles involved in preparing and interpreting results obtained in the field. Electrical prospecting is rather complicated, both in theory and practice, and in order to make a brief description clear to the practical mining man it has been necessary to idealize and generalize the problems, at the risk of having such simplification criticized by the theoretical man. This simplification must not be misinterpreted as showing a lack of theoretical knowledge. FIG. 1.-FLOW OF CURRENT IN AND AROUND A CONDUCTING BODY. For its operation, electrical prospecting mainly depends on-the fact that most metallic ores conduct an electric current much more readily than barren rocks. If an electric current flows through a block of ground within which a body of chalcopyrite is enclosed in country rock of schist, the current will find less resistance to its passage through the chalcopyrite than through the schist, even though the passage through the latter be much shorter. This is because the longer path through the chalcopyrite offers less resistance, owing to the superior electrical conductivity of the chalcopyrite (Fig. 1).

Arsenic reports in the effluents of many non-ferrous metallurgical operations. The production of scorodite, a crystalline ferric arsenate, is considered as an attractive option for the fixation of arsenic from aqueous effluents. However, scorodite solubility and long-term stability in the pH region of interest for tailings disposal have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study the long-term stability of scorodite in the pH 5 to 9 region and the mechanism of scorodite dissolution were studied. Construction of eh-pH diagrams indicated that scorodite stability is highly dependant on the nature (stability) of co-existing iron-hydroxide/oxyhydroxide. It was also found that when scorodite dissolves, a ferrihydrite phase having very small particles size (nano-scale) forms and that the growth and crystallization of this material are delayed by the presence of arsenate even under accelerated (75°C) ageing conditions. Around neutral pH and ambiant temperature (22°C) scorodite seems to reach an equilibrium with ferrihydrite after 48 weeks yielding soluble arsenic concentrations < 5 ppm.
