A aplicação de vidros planos com eficiência energética está aumentando de forma significativa no mercado mundial. A performance energética, bem como as propriedades estéticas, cor, reflexão e transmissão, são os motivos pelos quais estes vidros são aplicados na construção civil. Estes vidros planos com eficiência energética são produtos constituídos por uma lâmina de vidro tipo Soda-Cálcio revestida por filmes finos em escala nanométrica. Tais filmes finos são em sua maioria constituídos de ligas metálicas, metais puros e materiais cerâmicos, como óxidos e nitretos. As propriedades físicas e químicas de cada camada afetam diretamente as propriedades ópticas e a performance do produto. Este trabalho tem por objetivo o estudo das propriedades ópticas de filmes finos de Nitreto de Silício, depositados por Magnetron Sputtering Reativo sobre substrato de vidro Soda-Cálcio.

Lipson1 has recently presented a technical note wherein theoretical considerations were used to demonstrate. that the adsorption us saturation relation for a linear absorption method is not necessarily a single valued function of saturation.1 It was concluded that the absorption us saturation relationship is subject to the same hysteretic effect as is the flow behavior between the drainage and imbibition systems. It is the purpose of this note to show, by experimental results, that for the manner in which fluids are distributed in porous materials during fluid flow, the relative X-ray absorption us saturation relationship is single-valued regardless of the saturation history. The design of the apparatus used to measure relative X-ray absorption of cores undergoing fluid flow tests is similar to that described by Morgan, McDowell and Doty. A few modifications have been incorporated in the design to increase sensitivity and simplicity of measurement. The sensitivity is such that for usual types of cores a recording pen movement of approximately 12 linear in. is occasioned between the recording of the core dry and when it is completely full of an absorbing liquid, a solution of approximately five per cent by volume of iodo-benzene in a close-cut hydrocarbon fraction, or a solution of 50,000 ppm sodium iodide in water. Two types of experiments were conducted, one in which the liquid was inside the core, and the other with the liquid outside the core. Tests with the liquid inside the core were run to cover the saturation range encountered in both the drainage (gas drive) and imbibition (liquid flood) flow systems. It is pointed out that the same core was used, but the tests were conducted at different times with the recording mechanism balanced at a different position. Therefore, the absolute values of relative X-ray intensity at any saturation are not the same in each test. In the second type of test the same core was used, but this time its pore space cmtained only gas, and various thicknesses of oil contained in plastic cells were placed in front of the dry core. As before. the relative X-ray ah- sorption was measured and compared to the quantity of oil in front of the core. The arrangement of the fluids with respect to the path of X-rays in these two types of tests represent fluid distributions of a wider difference than can be expected between that established in a core just due to imbibition and drainage saturation flow histories. Thus any deviation from a straight line relationship of the log of the relative X-ray intensity us saturation calibration should be readily apparent. Results of the laboratory tests are given in Fig. 1. A schematic diagram showing the position of the fluids with respect to the path of the X-ray beam is given for the two cases investigated. In the case where the oil existed outside the core (Case B), the log of the X-ray intensity (log, I/I,) is related directly to the cell thickness (amount of oil in X-ray beam path). This correlation is in full agreement with X-ray theory. THE past year in the petroleum industry was one of overproduction, rising inventories, low prices, and meagre to vanishing profits. This outcome was the result of a long period of intensive and uncompensated effort on the part of both financial and industrial interests, to stimulate supply on the theory that the primary problem facing the petroleum industry was the development of an adequate reserve of raw material to protect a large and ever-growing investment. The stimulus was applied in various forms and through diverse channels: capital had, long flowed into the industry in excessive amounts under the attraction of large expected profits; the price level for crude petroleum had persistently been influenced -by speculative considerations, with the result that prices declined slowly in periods of flush production and were quick to advance in anticipation of statistical improvement, thus maintaining a superfluous degree of stimulus on wildcatting and on drilling; speculation in inventories had led to the unsound, or at least unusual, business practice of accumulating huge stocks of oil; and, above all, the industry had directed the potent force of technology to the expansion of supply and achieved radical results in accelerating oil discovery, speeding up the rate of oil extraction, and enlarging the recovery of gasoline and lubricating oils from the raw material. In short, the economic conditions of 1927 were exactly those to which the objectively driven enterprise of the petroleum industry had long been directed; and the undesirable financial consequences arising. therefrom reflected no lack of success in what had been set out to be achieved, but rather the failure to have established concurrently the necessary means of economic control to prevent the immediate conversion of reserves into current supply, and likewise the oversight in neglecting to apply the technological force to the enlargement and diversification of the market for petroleum products. Perhaps, when viewed in its longer perspective, 1927 will stand out as the turning point in the economic policy of the petroleum industry, when the technique of rationalizing production made its, initial claim for recognition.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes the plan used to instrument two longwall gateroads at the Powhatan No. 4 Mine of the Quarto Mining Co. Vibrating wire stressmeters, flat jack U-cells, multipoint extensometer stations, and convergence stations were installed in or on the coal pillars, roof bolts, and roof strata of the gateroad entries. The instruments measure pillar stresses, bolt loadings, and strata movements as the gateroad entries are developed and the longwall panel(s) is mined. The report details only the instrumentation plan of the longwall gateroads and not the evaluation of any subsequent data. This is because a complete analy-sis of the data cannot be made until extraction of the longwall panel(s) is complete.

No presente trabalho foi realizada uma análise qualitativa e quantitativa das inclusões presentes em um aço microligado de partida de máquina, através da observação de imagens obtidas por microscópio ótico. A observação das imagens permitiu verificar uma falta de homogeneidade ou padrão na ocorrência das inclusões nas amostras e que as inclusões presentes eram do tipo óxidos glogulares e alumina.

In froth flotation valuable particles are captured by bubbles and transferred to a froth layer where bubbles are in close proximity. Bubble coalescence frequently occurs in flotation, especially in the froth layer. The coalescence of two bubbles causes a release of energy, which may expel particles from the bubble surface. A series of experiments were carried out to determine the effect of bubble interfacial properties on the detachment of particles upon the coalescence of capillary-held bubbles of 2 mm in size. The interfacial properties of the bubbles were changed by the addition of low molecular weight alcohols, namely 1-pentanol or methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC). Using esterified glass particles (? = 43 °) with a 10 % and 90 % cumulative passing diameter of 47.2 and 92.5 µm, respectively, as model particles, it was found a certain concentration of frother, different for each additive, is needed in order to observe a reduction in the detachment of particles. In the presence of frother, the detachment was evaluated at approximately 65 % which was a considerable reduction in the detachment compared with the value of approximately 85 % found in the absence of frother. Frother molecules changed the properties of the airwater interface. Upon the coalescence of two bubbles, the release of energy caused the merged bubble to oscillate; effectively resulting in the detachment of particles. The addition of frothing agents augmented the elasticity of the bubbles, which appeared to be related to the detachment of particles. Whereas frothing agents are generally used to prevent bubble coalescence and stabilise the froth phase, only transient stability is imparted. The results suggested that an additional role of frothers in flotation is to decrease the detachment of particles from bubble surfaces. The type and concentration of frother can be strategically selected to improve metallurgical recovery as an economic incentive.

Pilot plant grinding and concentration test results indicate that conglomerate native copper ore can be ground and concentrated using conventional techniques. Single stage autogenous grinding and rod mill-ball mill grinding required the same amount of energy far the required comminution. Metallurgical results were comparable for both types of grinding investigated.

Y.-I would like to emphasize what Mr. Phalen says in his paper regarding the possible utilization of the waste acids in the West for the acid concentration of phosphate rock, and to call attention to the fact that this is already being done by Mr. Laist at Anaconda, who is producing concentrated phosphoric acid from these low-grade rocks. During the last year, he has not been able to carry this along to the extent he, had expected, owing to the tremendous demand which they have had for all the acid they can produce, so instead of having a. surplus of acid, as was expected, they are really short of this material for their electrolytic copper and zinc work.

While the potential for the discovery of new high grade resources exists, it is almost inevitable that the ore resources used to provide society's ongoing demand for primary metals will deteriorate over time as the higher grade reserves are exploited first and are progressively depleted. This deterioration in quality of metallic ore resources will bring about significant interactions with other resources such as energy and water, resulting in an increase in the amount of these resources required per unit of primary metal production. In this paper it is shown that as ores deteriorate in quality, the contributions of the mining and mineral processing stages to the life cycle-based embodied energy and water of primary metal production will increase significantly. Therefore efforts to reduce the impact of deteriorating ore resources on energy and water consumption should focus on these stages.   The results from life cycle assessments of the production of various metals by a number of different processing routes, particularly copper and to a lesser extent nickel, have been used to identify a number of opportunities and technologies for reducing the energy consumption in the mining and mineral processing stages, including: comminution, eg high pressure grinding rolls, stirred mills, ore sorting, preconcentration, advanced blasting techniques, advances in diesel technology for loading and hauling, alternative processing routes, eg heap leaching, in situ leaching, water treatment and re-use, water quality 'fit for purpose', dry processing, floating modules to reduce evaporation, and paste thickeners. All the above and existing developed flotation technologies can impact on the mineralogy of the concentrate supplied to the smelter. Removal of gangue minerals early on in processing may have further downstream process implications on fuel and water requirements. The above technologies are in various stages of development, with some more advanced than others. However, all can be expected to play their part in improving the sustainability of the Australian mining industry.

FROM the point of view of the metallographist, the adaptation of x-rays to the study of the crystal structure of metals is of the greatest importance. While one may hardly consider the findings resulting from x-ray study as revolutionary, their positive nature, compared with the deductions we have been forced to accept from the work that had gone before, gives firmer ground on which to build and furnishes new fields for speculation. Prior to the advent of the crystallogram, the best work on the crystal structure of steel was that of Osmond and Cartaud.1 They concluded, from their investigation with percussion figures formed at various temperatures, that alpha, beta, and gamma irons belonged to the cubic system and that they showed well-marked specific characteristics and could not have the same internal structure. What the internal structures were, they had no direct method of determining; but from a consideration. of the fact that the 001 plane (that parallel to the cube face) is a plane of perfect cleavage and minimum hardness in alpha iron and that the 111 (octahedral) plane is by far the most important in the crystallography of gamma iron, they were led to suggest the simple cubic arrangement as that of alpha and the face-centered cubic arrangement as that of gamma iron. They suggested the body-centered cubic arrangement as that of beta iron. The atomic arrangement of the various crystal forms of iron has been quite definitely determined in recent years by means of x-rays and the work of Westgren2 and Westgren and Phragmèn3 has been rather conclusive. They not only determined the atomic arrangement of alpha, beta, and gamma iron but also that of the high-temperature modification delta.

Os minérios limoníticos de níquel apresentam na sua composição metais como ferro, níquel e cobalto, sendo o primeiro o elemento majoritário. A presença majoritária de ferro prejudica a separação dos demais metais que possuem interesse comercial. Para remoção do ferro, técnicas hidrometalúrgicas são usadas. A extração por solventes é uma técnica com foco na separação seletiva de metais. Neste trabalho, foi preparada uma solução sintética baseada nas concentrações dos metais presentes na lixiviação de um minério limonítico de níquel. A solução foi colocada em contato com o extratante Cyanex 272. Este extratante é conhecido pela sua seletividade ao ferro em valores de pH próximos a 2,0. As amostras foram analisadas utilizando a técnica de Espectroscopia de Fluorescência de Raios X por Energia Dispersiva (EDX). Após concluídos os ensaios foi encontrado que durante a extração do ferro, o cobalto foi coextraído junto, mesmo em pHs entre 0,5 e 2,0, indicando que a presença do ferro altera o comportamento do cobalto.

The conditions of great mining depth and multi-seam¬longwalling require a special method of rockbolting, It can be described as a control loop which is based on the elements of planning, drivage and measurement. Different planning elements such as the results of the observation of physical models, numerical programmes for calculation of stress-distribution and support success, lab and underground support testing and the knowledge of strata behaviour underground including geotechnical classification are used to get best results. The increasing geotechnical information collected during drivage of roadways are used to estimate and minimise the risks of support-overload. The repeated plan/acutal comparison during the use of roadway and continuously monitoring of support and roadways provided the opportunity of optimising support design during the process of drivage and if necessary in front and after of the longwall face.

Operations ill Colorado oil fields in 1934 were not quite so extensive as in 1933, but much better results were obtained and one new oil field was discovered. In all, 26 wells were drilled, of which 9 were oil wells, 1 was a gas well, and 16 were dry holes. New oil production totaled 10,220 bbl. and new gas production totaled 33,714,000 cu. ft. This compares with new oil production in 1933 of 1238 bbl. and new gas production of 14,307,000 cu. ft. Dry holes in 1933 totaled 29 as conlpared with 16 in 1934. Oil was discovered in the Hiawatha gas field, Moffat County, in 1934 in the Mountain Fuel Supply Company's No. 4B Wilson, C. NE. NW. of sec. 23, 12N., 100W. This well was completed in a sand in the Wasatch (Tertiary) at 2304 to 2337 ft., after plugging back from 3797 ft. It made 20 bbl. of oil initially. No. 4B Wilson is the first well in the Rocky Mountain region to discover oil in commercial amounts in rocks younger than Cretaceous, and while it is not expected that Hiawatha will develop into an oil field of important proportions, eventually it may produce a considerable amount of oil as the gas pressure declines.
