THE manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In. certain respects they strongly resemble those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia. Viewed from the present condition of the maganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments; youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide of both areas. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate amount of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flows largely of basic types. To this series I have given the name Birrim. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. As the characteristics of these non-fossiliferous strata at many places are the same as those of strata in many parts of the world that are suitable for the preservation of fossils and that contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim series have normally a northeast-southwest strike and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts., From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed across their strike for more than 600 miles to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence. they probably extend much further into French Territory.

Evidence of the effects which high-angle grain boundaries and veining subgrain boundaries have on the yield phenomenon of zone-refined iron is reported. Room-temperature tensile tests on 50-mil wive at several gram sizes produced upon recrystallization at diffevent temperatures below 910C (a-y phase-transfornzatzon temperature) show that upper and lower yield stress decrease with increasing grain size. The upper yield point effectively disappears at grain sizes of 81 and 102 u in samples of this diameter. However, samples of 129 p grain size. produced during recrys-tallization at 950°C, exhibit a pronounced upper yield point and an increased lower yield stress. Possible causes of the reversal in the grain-size dependence of yielding are discussed. Veining substructure, detected with picval-HC1 etchant, but not with 2 pct nital, is formed during the a-y transformation, and is believed to account for the observed effecls. The strengthening associated with high-angle boundaries in zone-refined tron is discussed in terms of: 1) the stress dependence of slzp multiplicity, and 2) the stress dependence of dislocation emission from grain boundaries. WIDE use of transmission electron microscopy and dislocation etch-pitting techniques has led to a growing awareness of the presence of dislocation substructures in annealed pure metals. Whereas much speculation'-4 has developed about the influence which subgrain structures have on the mechanical behavior of metals, particularly the yield strength, only limited experimental evidence correlating subgrain structures with lower yield strength has been presented. 2,3,5-7 It is the purpose of this note to present experimental evidence of the effects which grain boundaries and subgrain boundaries have on both the upper and lower yield strength of zone-refined iron. Effects due to high-angle boundaries formed upon recrystallization below the a-y phase transformation are compared with effects due to veining subgrain boundaries formed upon "recrystallization" above the a-y phase-transformation temperature. These effects are further compared with the reported influence 2,3,5-7 which low-angle boundaries have on the lower yield strength of bcc transition metals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting material for these experiments was a 1-in.-diam zone-refined ingot prepared at Battelle Memorial Institute. Initial purification of electrolytic iron by vacuum-induction melting was improved by a floating zone-melting treatment in ultrapure hydrogen.' Chemical analysis of this zone-refined iron appears in Table I. Tensile samples of 50-mil wire were prepared by rolling and drawing portions of the ingot. An intermediate recrystallization anneal at 625°C after rolling to a reduction in area of 85 pct was carried out in an evacuated Vycor capsule (10-=5 mm Hg). Further reduction in area of 91 pct was followed by recrystallization in evacuated Vycor capsules at temperatures between 600" and 950°C, see Table 111. All samples

This paper presents the results of a study of the mechanics of methane gas flow in coal. Desorption tests carried out on cylindrical coal specimens showed that an analytical formulation can be made to model the process of gas flow in coal based on an integration of Darcy's law, Fick's law and Langmuir's relation. The diffusivity term in the flow equation varies directly with local gas content. Permeability tests carried out on the same coal result in permeability constants with values higher than equivalent permeabilities obtained from desorption tests by many orders of magnitude. The study also revealed that permeability is highly dependent on the applied gas pressure and the rock stress.

There has been disappointingly little development in the understanding of the behaviour of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardised approaches in particular, are surprising in view of the æultraÆ deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. Research has recently been carried out into the occurrence of zones of extension strain in open pit slopes. This showed that very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. Results of the research will be presented for different slope heights, slope angles and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratios. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning, producing easily measurable seismicity. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. Case studies of slope failure in two open pits will be described. In both cases failure occurred æsuddenlyÆ after very limited amounts of deformation. In the first, the slope crest moved suddenly upwards and backwards over a length of more than 200 m, with associated instability. In the second, the horizontal displacement of the slope face was almost an order of magnitude greater than the vertical displacement and occurred æsuddenlyÆ. A recently installed seismic system is detecting events in a significant zone behind the slope face. Both pits were in the 200 m to 300 m depth range at the time of the occurrences.

The bath and the liquid metal in the aluw~inuw~ electrolytic cells are moving under the action of the Laplace forces. Consequently there are differences in level at the interface of the liquid. This phenomena is studied by means of a computer; the characteristics of the mathematical model used are presented with the results corresponding to two typical cases. This study gives a new and origi~zal interpretation of magnetic ej-jects; their action depends very closely on the hydraulic phenomenon which explain the sensibility of the cells to the slope and thickness of solid bath frozen around the pot. MAGNETIC effects produced in the electrolytic cells used for the production of aluminum are known to exist, a factor whose importance is well-known by producers through its influence on cell operation and output. In particular, these effects bring about movements in both the bath and metal as well as interface variations in level that are detrimental to sound electrolysis . A direct study of these effects by means of an experimental device would raise a number of problems particularly difficult not to say impossible to solve in the present state of techniques. It is for this reason that we had recourse to an electronic computer for working out the speed and pressure distribution within the liquid in the cells. We have assumed that all other possible causes for movement, such as thermal convection and evolution of gas at the anode, are acting without any connection with magnetic effects, and that consequently we may study each of these causes separately. A basic cause for magnetic effects lies in the presence of Laplace forces within the bath and metal. Electric current and magnetic field distribution have been calculated with the help of an electronic computer, and two communications about it have already been made to AIME.* 1) PRESENTATION OF THE MATHEMATICAL PATTERN In order to solve this problem, it was essential to assume a number of simplifying hypotheses with regard to both the geometry of the actual cells and the phenomena themselves. A first simplification consisted in assuming that the movements of the conducting liquid modify neither the electric currents nor the magnetic fields. In consideration of the magnitude of the values involved this assumption seemed accep-tible. 1.1) Finding the Equation of the Problem. The problem raised consisted in determining the flow of two viscous immiscible liquids with different densities subjected in a complex environment to gravity and Laplace forces. As a matter of fact, the sum of the external forces acting on the liquids is: F = JAB +pg where F = volume energy, B = magnetic field, J = current density, p = specific gravity, g = gravity. Virtual reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced form of computer graphics. The images are generated based on where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR can provide a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. New technology continues to be introduced into the mining industry to meet the productivity needs of coal and noncoal producers. There is also an increased need for more innovative training of mine workers. New technology and equipment designs often affect the basic causes of accidents. For example, the development of cabs and canopies for underground coal-mine equipment has reduced the number of accidents related to roof falls and rib rolls. However, safety-training specialists then had to focus on the machines themselves, because the modifications had the potential for causing "pinch-point" accidents. In fact, although the overall physical demands on mine workers have diminished, there has been an escalation in the concerns about trauma from repetitive physical activity. Thus, health-and-safety training specialists have shifted their atten¬tion to the recognition, evaluation and control of workplace hazards (Hancock and Hill, 1995). Recognizing that the spatial relationships of a workplace convey more information about hazards when experienced rather than described, trainers agree that simulation is the method of choice. Unfortunately, until recently, simulation systems were either simple software programs that did not come close to portraying the real experience or were complex hardware systems (such as flight simulators) that did, but at a cost of millions of dollars (Fritz, 1991). However, researchers and training specialists are excited about an emerging approach to work-force education based on virtual reality. VR is also described as cyberspace, immersive simulation, artificial reality, telepresence, virtual environment or virtual world (Meyer and Dunn-Roberts, 1992; Peterson, 1992). It represents a group of concurrent advances in computer and interface technologies. They enable an individual to interact in a multisensory way with a computer-generated environment. To achieve this, a typical VR system incorporates a computer that contains the necessary databases for producing realistic images and audio; a head-mounted display (HMD) or screen for viewing the images; and a three-dimensional controller, joystick or data glove for interacting with the computer-generated environment. If virtual reality is to become an effective tool for the safety training of mine workers, its attributes will have to be measured against other forms of delivery. Accordingly, Carr (1992) listed the following areas in which VR should be considered the method of choice: ? When training mistakes would be costly. ? When the necessary environment cannot be experienced in the real world. ? To build interfaces that are sensible and can be manipulated. ? To make training situations really "real." ?To make perceptible the imperceptible.

Relatively simple techniques have been developed which enable the electrochemistry of sulfide minerals to be studied with particles varying in size from above 100 pm to less than 1 pm. Both oxidative and reductive processes have been studied wing the minerals pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite. It has been shown that it is possible to completely oxidise or reduce the minerals during a single voltammetic sweep. The resulting voltammogram produces peaks which are characteristic of each mineral and can be used to qualitatively identify the minerals. In the case of chalcopyrite, it has been demonstrated that the charge involved in the anodic oxidation can be quantitatively related to the amount of copper dissolved. Quantitative information can be obtained using peak fitting techniques. Interesting differences in the behaviour of the minerals in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids have been observed, particularly in the case of pyrite for which a second major peak is obtained which has been attributed to the oxidation of elemental sulfur in the presence of chloride ions. The technique offers the possibility of providing mineralogical information of individual particles based on an electrochemical voltammetic finger print.

O presente trabalho consiste em estudar o comportamento mecânico de compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados com fibras de cânhamo e testadas com impacto Izod. Para a realização deste teste, foram feitas amostras com dimensões de 10 mm de largura, 63 mm de comprimento e 12,7 mm de espessura em diferentes frações volumétricas de fibra, 0%, 10%, 20% e 30%. As amostras foram testadas em um conjunto pendular PANTEC na configuração Izod, modelo XC-50 localizado no LAMAV/UENF. A energia de impacto Izod dos compósitos de poliéster de 30% de fibras de cânhamo foi de 169,4 J/m.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been experimenting with flotation processes to separate the spodumene-beryl ores mined at Kings Mountain, N.C. The success to date as well as the present status of the process is discussed. Further experimentation is underway and studies will be made on the milling costs involved in the flotation process. The pegmatites of the Kings Mountain-Lincoln ton, N.C., area constitute the largest known domestic reserve of beryl and spodumene. The reserve is estimated to contain 90 million tons of pegmatic material with 1,280,000 tons of recoverable Li,O(lithia) as spodurnene.' The pegmatites also contain 0.4 to 0.5 pct beryl disseminated throughout the orebodies. The pegmatites may contain a potential reserve of 240,-000 tons beryl, equivalent to approximately 34,000 tons of BeO. Different flotation methods for separating beryl from feldspar or quartz, or both, have been developed by various investigators.2-7 On the other hand, published information is limited on concentration of spodumene-beryl ores. As the response of beryl and spodumene to flotation is essentially the same, a successful separation of the two minerals depends upon use of a selective depressant or a selective collector for one of the minerals. Several years ago, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, recognizing the need for developing a large domestic supply of strategic beryl, undertook studies to develop improved methods of recovering this mineral. Because of the low beryl content of the pegmatites, economic production of the beryl entails its recovery as a byproduct of spodumene flotation. Thus, the development of procedures that would provide for maximum recoveries of the spodumene, as well as the beryl, was a primary objective of the studies. Tests were made on run-of-mine ore and spodumene flotation tailing from the Foote Mineral Co.'s spodumene concentrator at Kings Mountain (Fig. 1). Pet-rographic analyses of the ore and flotation tailing are given in Table I. Detailed analyses and examinations of the ore and tailings revealed that the beryllium was present in the form of a low-alkali beryl. The crystals were small, rarely larger than 14-mesh diam, and were clear and colorless. About 10 pct of the Li20 content of the ore was present in the mica and feldspar components of the pegmatite. In some weathered ores the associated clays also contained small amounts of lithia. This is typical of pegmatites in the Kings Mountain area. LABORATORY TESTS In the past, a vigorous chemical treatment of the spodumene surfaces with acid or caustic soda has been considered essential for satisfactory selective flotation of the spodumene from the other minerals in pegmatites. Many tests were made during this investigation to determine if chemical treatment of the spodumene could be eliminated in favor of a reagent combination that would depress the other minerals while selectively floating the spodumene. A simple reagent combination and process was developed that gave better spodumene recovery and grade of concentrate than the more elaborate acid or caustic treatment methods previously used. The finely ground ore pulps were conditioned with either an ammonium, alkali, or alkaline earth lignin sulfonate and sodium fluoride, and the spodumene was floated and cleaned using oleic acid as the collector. The spodumene tailing was deslimed, conditioned with sulfuric acid and coco amine acetate, and floated to reject mica. The mica tailing was thickened and conditioned with hydrofluoric acid, then washed to remove the acid. The washed pulp was conditioned with sodium hydroxide for pH control, and the beryl was floated and cleaned with oleic acid as the collector. Table II summarizes the results of the laboratory test work. About 77 pct of the spodumene and 75 pct of the beryl were recovered from the pegmatitic material. THE Birmingham district of Alabama has utilized the slag from its blast furnaces consistently since the earliest development of the slag industry. Today there are producers of slag cement who started business in 1900, and who have, under a progressive policy, expanded the number of their products to meet present demands. There are producers of slag aggregates and other crushed slag products who have been successful for periods of over thirty years. There are at the present two companies, Cheney Lime and Cement Co. and the Southern Cement Co., manufacturing puzzolan cement; two companies, Birmingham Slag Co. and Woodstock Slag Co., making slag aggregates and by-products; one company, Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railway Co., a subsidiary of the U. S. Steel Corporation, producing ground open-hearth basic slag for soil conditioning. Two companies, the Sloss Sheffield Steel and Iron Co. and the Woodstock Slag Co., make slag concrete in ready-mix plants and one company, the Superock Company, manufactures fine and coarse slag aggregates under a new granulation process. No Portland cement is made with slag as an ingredient, because dolomite is used so extensively as a blast-furnace flux that the magnesium content of the slag is excessive. Sources Of Slag In the Birmingham district there are 22 blast furnaces, of which the majority are in blast. The present production is 165,000 tons of pig iron monthly; the production in 1935 was 1,297,960 gross tons1. There are also two blast furnaces at Gadsden and one ferroalloy electric furnace at Anniston. From these two sources is obtained slag to approximately 1.1 tons per ton of pig iron.

ENGINEERS as a group are often criticized because they have been responsible for the development of many technical improvements only to allow the administration of them to pass into the hands of others who may have little understanding of how they operate and little competence in their use. These criticisms are not always justified. There are many engineers who have shown themselves to be great administrators in addition to being great creators or builders, and more and more one sees the engineer demonstrating unusual administrative ability as he moves into the executive ranks. The last five or ten years have seen a new movement developing in this country-a movement brought about through the recognition by business statesmen that successful business administrators and executives just cannot be expected to develop like Topsy, that the management of a company must deliberately take steps to cultivate the proper climate or environment for growth if it wishes to provide an adequate and capable succession of executives in the future. This movement has taken on a number of names-Management Development, Executive Development, Personnel Development-but are these not actually misnomers? Can we develop anybody? In the strictest sense of the word, the author doubts that anyone can change any other person, at least, not much. The change must come from within. Perhaps this movement should be looked at not as a program of developing people but as one of giving people an opportunity to develop themselves. In the Humble Oil & Refining Co. there is an Executive Development Program; maybe it might better be called a Program of Development for Executives.

A number of mines in Australia have experienced premature detonations caused by bulk explosives reacting with the rock type being blasted. Premature detonations are extremely high risk events as they are unplanned, occurring at any place, at any time, potentially resulting in high loss (personnel and equipment). Many Australian mines have also experienced spontaneous combustion where spilt explosive reacts vigorously with the rock type. Premature detonation in these cases does not occur due to the lack of confinement and the volume of explosive present, but these reactions could impinge on the surface initiation system and provide an early warning of future premature detonations. The explosive ground reactivity phenomena is not restricted to Australia with similar incidents being reported in North and South America, South Africa, China and South East Asia. All reported incidents have two common denominators, being the presence of sulphide rock types and nitrate based explosives. Both premature detonation and spontaneous combustion result from the same series of reactions of partially weathered sulphides that ultimately result in the violent decomposition of the ammonium nitrate based explosive. A number of relatively easily observable indicators can be used to assess a particular minesiteÆs potential for explosive ground reactivity. The presence of two or more of these indicators means that minesite personnel should contact their explosives manufacturer for assistance in determining if a problem exists and if so then developing strategies to overcome the situation. The paper describes the indicators as well as discussing, via a case study, the holistic approach required to efficiently develop a relevant æSafe and Efficient Blasting ProcedureÆ to deal with explosive ground reactivity problems.

Optimization blast design parameters for rounds used at surface mines, quarries or cast blast has taken on a new importance with the increased the cost of the explosives and electronic detonators. This paper addresses the fundamentals of blast design and optimization explosive energy utilized for fragmentation. This laboratory studies shows that one key variable-the strain energy set up in rock mass by blast vibration – can be used to predict the extent of damage done to the rock strata, the degree of fragmentation of the broken rock, and the velocity of the broken rock. It also shows how the dynamic strength of the rock strata is influence the fragmentation size distribution as well as the blastability.

The Hedong Gold Mine is located in the Yan(ai area, tihandong hroo%ill, e. China. It is an underground mine with an annual gold output of some 700 0(H) grams. The orebody is located on the edge of the Wanger Shan metamorphism zone, and the hangingwall of orebodies is thus defined by a prominent set of fractures. The proximity of the metamorphism zone and the inclusion of the fracture set ensure that both the orebody and the country rocks are unstable. The main orebodies dip at an angle of between 40 to 45¦, with a strike length of 160 metres and a horizontal width of 50 metres. Surface subsidence in the area is not permitted. Cut and fill mining is usually practiced. As the mining operation proceeds to greater depths, the ore grade is diminishing and it is necessary to find a more efficient stoping method. Sublevel open stoping with sequential extraction and filling of each sublevel has been designed and applied in situ. This new mining method is called 'sublevel open and fill stoping method' in the mine. Experience to-date is that new mining method is Satisfactory.

The solubility of oxygen in iron containing aluminum has been determined at 1550°, 1600°, and 1650°C and found to be much higher than predicted from theoretical considerations, possibly due to equilibria with an iron-aluminum spinel phase rather than pure AI,O.. The presence of manganese greatly increased the deoxidizing power of aluminum. DEOXIDATION and inclusion formation in steel have proved to be elusive phenomena that are difficult to control in spite of much effort to understand and evaluate the reactions. Study of the problem indicated that more accurate data on the solubility of oxygen in iron containing deoxidizers were essential to further progress, and an empirical determination of oxygen solubilities has been initiated at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc. The investigation has included the effects of aluminum, silicon, manganese, and combinations of these elements at 1550°, 1600°, and 1650°C. The equipment and experimental procedure as well as the results of a study of the effects of aluminum are described below. In general, it was found that the solubility of oxygen in iron containing aluminum is much higher than predicted, possibly because of the formation of complex nonmetallic phases, and that manganese greatly increases the deoxidizing power of aluminum. The generally accepted deoxidation curves for 1600°C are summarized in fig. 1, from "Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking"'. These curves are assumed to represent the solubility of oxygen in the presence of deoxidizers and should indicate the limits of mis-cibility gaps in the phase diagrams of the systems that control the formation and character of non-metallic inclusions as described by Benedicks and Lofquist'. They were derived mainly by application of the methods of thermodynamics to the available experimental observations, and by calculations based on the thermal constants of the pure substances when experimental data were lacking. Among the more notable researches contributing to the development of knowledge of oxygen solubilities are those of Korber and Oelsen8, 4, C. H. Herty, Jr. and associates5,6, Krings and Schackmann7, Went-rup and Hieber8 Schenck and Briiggeman9, Vacher and Hamilton'" and Chipman and co-authors 1,11,12,13 Practically, the deoxidation curves are of limited value in predicting oxygen content and rationalizing deoxidation practices. The reasons for this inadequacy appear to be error from inaccurate data, oversimplifying assumptions, interacting effects of combined deoxidizers, and possibly unknown extra-equilibrium and side reactions. "The remotely located Cockatoo Island iron ore mine off the Kimberley coast in the northwest of Western Australia has been in operation since 1951. The mine was recently expanded up to about 50 m (165 ft) below sea level using staged construction to create a rockfill seawall around the open cut mining operation. Late in 2013, to allow expansion of subsea iron ore mining operations, Wagstaff Piling was engaged to install a seepage barrier through the rockfill seawall and into the underlying seabed sediments.Earlier stages of seawall construction had used a variety of different construction techniques with varied success, and the history of subsea mining on the island had been plagued with failures, including failures in the slope of the seawall itself, hanging wall failure underneath and inside the seawall, and footwall failures as the ore was mined leaving the rock face inclined at 55 degrees, parallel to the bedding. The current expansion, known as the Stage 4 expansion, was more tightly constrained by the pit geometry and available materials than previous seawall expansions that adopted clay core and sheet pile seepage barrier solutions. In Stage 4, an innovative seepage barrier solution using a grout curtain was selected to provide the necessary cutoff to allow access to high-grade ore, while protecting the mine from inundation by the sea.Seawall ConceptThe open cut subsea mining operation consisted of a 3 km (1.9 mi) long narrow pit along the south side of Cockatoo Island that extended to depths of about 50 m (165 ft) below sea level, and were exposed to the open sea on the south side of the pit. Massive tidal variations of more than 10.5 m (34.5 ft) required a seawall founded on the seabed, extending upwards to RL+13, to safely protect the pit from the high tide level rising to above RL+10."

E. H. DENNY (United States Bureau of Mines, Denver, Colorado) In the absence of Mr. Harrington it is my privilege to read his paper, which is in his usual, forcible and sincere style, and it is within the province of this Institute, certainly, to go into it as it concerns safety and efficiency in mining. He brings out some points in his paper that, I think, are well worth the consideration of the Institute. The figures he uses were compiled by Mr. Adams, of the Bureau, and cover a five-year period. However, examination of similar Bureau figures for a ten-year period, or any other long period on other bases brings out similar results. The figures in this paper have been based on the million hours of exposure of accidents, and the figures based on three hundred working-man-day basis, or on tonnage, brings out similar results. This paper is entitled "Accident Record in Western Mines," and it is, in a way, an amplification of Mr. Harrington's letter which was read at the Glenwood Springs Meeting.

"The pressure acid leaching residue of zinc concentrate contains a large quantity of sulfur. The present study attempts to leach sulfur using a mixture of ammonium sulfide and water solution at 25°C. Effects of three leaching variables: ammonium sulfide concentration, leaching time, liquid/solid ratio on the sulfur leaching rate were investigated. The process conditions were optimized using response surface methodology based on the central composite design. From the analysis of variance (ANOVA), the significant factors on response were identified. The optimum conditions for leaching elemental sulfur from pressure acid leaching residue of zinc concentrate were obtained using an ammonium sulfide concentration of 2.5 mol/L, leaching liquid-solid ratio of 6.5:1 and leaching time of 7 min. Under the optimum experimental conditions, a maximum of 98.50% of total sulfur was extracted. The experimental results obtained agreed satisfactorily with the model predictions, with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.99.IntroductionSulfur is widely used in agriculture, medicine, rubber, building materials, gunpowder, wine and sugar, and other fields [1]. Currently the world sulfur production is 40Mt, out of which more than 90% is recovered from industrial processes, and 10% is natural [2], This highlights the importance of sulfur recovery. As the pressure leaching technologies [3] continue to mature and are increasingly applied to refining, a large quantity of high-sulfur residue is produced [4-5]. It is desirable to recover sulfur from this residue, so that it is economically advantageous, and reduces environmental pollution [6]."
