O uso de minérios lateríticos na metalurgia extrativa do níquel tem demandado investimentos em pesquisa e acordos de cooperação técnica para o desenvolvimento de tecnologias mais econômicas e produtivas. Devido às características de difícil processamento do minério e pelo decréscimo da sua quantidade e qualidade, ressalta-se a necessidade de se determinar técnicas efetivas de concentração, que possibilitem o aproveitamento de minérios marginais finos. Estabelece-se então, dentro de uma rota de processamento proposta, a estratégia de se produzir aglomerados (pelotas e/ou briquetes) a partir de concentrado de níquel. Além da fabricação dos aglomerados, faz-se necessária a sua caracterização em uma série de ensaios, para servir de base para a certificação desse produto e sua aplicação em processos de obtenção de ferro níquel ou gusa enriquecido com níquel. Um dos ensaios realizados envolve a caracterização física desses aglomerados. O ensaio foi realizado em máquina universal de ensaios, observando-se a resistência à compressão de amostras de aglomerados que passaram por diferentes tipos de rotas de processamento, e de diferentes etapas do processo de pelotização. Os resultados mostram que os aglomerados submetidos ao ensaio possuem resistência à compressão de pelotas verdes e secas de minério de ferro, conforme o esperado.

The purpose of this work is to show application of laboratory data in calculating solution gas-drive performance of the Cisco K-I reservoir. Included herein is a diagram showing the graphical relationship between six variables common to all solution gas-drive mechanisms. With an iterative process one may assume existence of any of these six variables at a particular pressure and calculate the production performance likely to occur in a reservoir produced by solution gas drive. Four unique pressure values are described at which the material balance equation alone is sufficient to predict the cumulative volumes of gas produced. Information derived from these pressure points establishes a criterion for determining compatibility of the pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) analysis of the produced crude with the gas production history. Two averaging procedures are used to arrive at a relative permeability-saturation relationship which describes the field-wide performance. INTRODUCTION The Cisco K-1 reservoir is a lenticular-type sand structure lying at approximately 6,300-ft subsurface. It is located in the H. and T. C. Railroad Co. Block 97, SW 1/4 S 392 and NW 1/4 S 385, Scurry County, Tex. Correlation of data from logs indicated that the Cisco K-1 reservoir occupied approximately 3,218 acre-ft of space with a closure of from 15 to 20 ft. Analysis of the production data indicates that the initial formation pressure and temperature were 2,450 psig and 121°F, respectively. The bubble point occurred at 1,715 psig after production of 12,256 STB oil and 11,520 Mcf gas. Only traces of water have been produced since initiation of production. Successive material balance calculations from June, 1952, to June, 1957, showed that no initial gas cap or water influx has contributed to production of oil and that the Cisco K-1 reservoir originally contained approximately 1.44 X 10" STB of oil. Artificial intelligence, and especially expert systems, are currently receiving considerable attention. Of interest to the control engineer is the utilization of these tools for real-time process control applications. To evaluate this technology, a real-time expert control system was implemented in one of the grinding circuits at Brenda Mines Ltd. The performance of this micro computer based expert system compared satisfactorily to the proven supervisory control system currently in use. The study confirmed the expectations that expert systems have potential for real-time, supervisory control of mineral processing operations.

"Each mineral processing project requires early testwork to evaluate the economic potential of a deposit. The testwork needs to be efficient and it should provide enough information to obtain key parameters, first for a high level flowsheet selection at the conceptual and PEA stages and then, for later stages, to confirm the flowsheet selection and optimize the metallurgical efficiency of the plant. The testwork should consider all rock types or lithologies present, and carry out testwork for the purpose of sizing the major processing equipment.A successful project requires that the project stakeholders develop an efficient sample collection program to produce enough material for a scoping and pre-feasibility level program. This involves the participation of a team of geologists, mining and metallurgical engineers in the project, as early as possible, to define the deposit characteristics that need to be validated.The project schedule requires a close control of the testwork scope, procedures, and timing, but also the efficient analysis of results to provide indications of red flags that could impact circuit design as early as possible.In some cases, projects are put on hold due to fluctuations of the world economy until the return of more favorable conditions. In that scenario, prior data analysis of former testwork results could reduce significantly the amount of testwork required to restart a project. The paper will also present examples where the analysis of former testwork data was used to reduce the amount of new testwork in addition to presenting examples of latest projects where the above-mentioned test program approach was followed."

Massive sulfide ores and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitates represent two extremes of a spatial continuum of hydrothermal deposition along oceanic ridges. Elemental variations across this continuum are of interest to economic geologists as a prospective geochemical exploration tool. Theoretical considerations suggest that certain physical and chemical parameters can be used to model compositional variations within the far-field (i.e., Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide) component as a function of distance from ridge axis; however, testing and verification of such models generally has been precluded because the few available distal hydrothermal sediment sequences have been sampled at low resolution and/or are highly diluted with biogenic components (e.g., siliceous and calcareous tests). Recent ocean drilling (ODP Leg 145; Sites 885/886) in the North Pacific successfully recovered an extensive record of "biogenic-free" distal hydrothermal precipitates from an area approximately 60 km south of the Chinook Trough at longitude 168.1 °W. Geophysical and geomorphological evidence suggests the Chinook Trough is the southern lithospheric scar marking initiation of late Cretaceous north-south rifting, implying that recovered hydrothermal materials record distal hydrothermal precipitation from the now-subducted Kula-Pacific spreading ridge. The Chinook Trough hydrothermal sequence is a continuous 15 my record of "biogenic-free" hydrothermal Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitation mixed with eolian clays. It was deposited during the late Cretaceous, early Paleocene (80-65 Ma) as the perpendicular distance from ridge axis increased from 75 to 600 km. A high-resolution geochemical analysis of this hydrothermal sequence reveals distinct trends for the up-core (equivalent to increasing distance from ridge) distribution patterns of Fe, Sc, As, and rare earth elements (REE). To make the statement that coal mine operation has been entirely revolutionized within the last ten years is a mild statement. This has been entirely due, of course, to the almost universal introduction of mechanical loading in coal mines. Under the old system of contract loading too much was left to the individual miner's judgment and willingness to do the right thing. Each miner regarded the place in which he worked as "his place," and depending upon the judgment and ability of the miner, conditions as found in these places largely reflected that man's individuality or personality. Many men kept their places well timbered and in such condition that they were not only able to load their turn but were able to take advantage of any surplus cars that might be available in their particular entry. These men were often regarded as "coal hogs." However, these men's places were usually found to be well timbered and well maintained. Supervision under this old system in a strict sense of the word amounted to casual visits to the man's working place by the foreman or his assistant once each day as required by law.

The sands of Snake River, Idaho, have long been known to contain gold. They were worked by some of the first prospectors who came to Idaho, and on the banks still stand the ruins of camps abandoned for years. There are almost always prospectors searching for gold during the season of low water, and it is not an infrequent thing to find a miner of the old type actually panning the sand, or the prospect-hole which he has just left. There is more or less mystery about these miners and their methods of finding the spots where they work. They are always subjects of much speculation to the ordinary traveller. The rich discoveries are, for the best of reasons, concealed until the claims can be taken up. It is difficult to find a place where there are no prospects, but the " colors " are so very fine that they do not offer much inducement to enterprise. The California miner usually values a color at from 5 to 10 cents, often the latter; while on Snake River it would take 100 colors, or even more, to make that amount.

After a methane explosion in a coal mine a pre-determined crisis management procedure is instigated. As the process rapidly evolves the inevitable question arises - are personnel trapped underground, are they alive and can they be rescued without putting the lives of the rescue crew at risk? This is a very emotive question with many sub-questions such as; could anybody have survived, is there the potential for a secondary explosion and is there a `window of opportunity' before that secondary explosion occurs?To determine if that window of opportunity exists two fundamental elements must be in place; a method of determining the atmosphere at key points in the mine and a method of predicting the course of change of that atmosphere with respect to time. The first element can be achieved if the tube bundle system is intact and drawing samples from known points, alternatively boreholes can be drilled from the surface. The second element can be realised by utilising a sequence of computer generated control charts which have a time axis, a percentage combustibles axis, the upper and lower explosive limits of the current atmosphere and a prediction option which allows the user to look at the potential changes in the atmosphere over a set period of time. These control charts would be part of the mines on-going crisis management system rather than a tool to be used after an explosion had occurred.

Electrical resistivity as a function of temperature was investigated in undercooled gallium and under-cooled Ga-In alloy of eutectic compositian to examine structural changes in undercooled melts. A continuous linear extension of the resistivity was determined for 99.999 pct pure gallium when undercooled below the stable Ga(l)-liquid, and the metastable Gafl)-liquid equilibria. In icndercooled Ga-In, a significant continuous negative departure from linear resistivity behavior was observed below the eutectic temperature. All resistivity measurements were made by the four-point probe technique. ThE temperature range for investigations into the physical properties of liquids before freezing has been greatly extended with the undercooling of massive melts of pure metals and alloys. Experimental determinations of thermal and transport properties and diffraction patterns in undercooled systems should throw further light on the structural behavior of liquids. Many measurements showing prefreezing anomalies in viscosity1'5 have been regarded677 as evidence for structural groupings in the liquid state. However, the majority of viscosity results,~)~-~~ conforming to the law 17 =A exp(~/RT), do not support theories of atomic aggregation. For the system Cd-Sb, which exhibits a metastable solid phase, Fisher and Phillipsg reported that, in undercooled alloys, the activation energies for viscous flow below the stable liquidus are much higher than those above it. Similarly, Miller et a1." observed a doubling of the activation energies for electrical conductivity in undercooled Cd-ib alloys. These effects were suggested as indicative of atomic association and clustering in the liquids at lower temperatures. With the recent establishment of metastable phases in pure gallium22 and its alloys,23 attempts were made during this investigation to undercool bulk samples and to determine the temperature dependence of electrical resistivitv. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch and small-scale continuous flotation tests of weathered mica pegmatite ores from Alabama and North Carolina to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates. A new anionic-catonic method was developed for recovering mica in the presence of clay slimes. In continuous tests, concentrates containing 98.1 percent mica were obtained from the Alabama pegmatite ore; the North Carolina pegmatite ore concentrates contained 97.2 percent mica. The recoveries were 83.8 and 81.6 percent, respectively.

The FIPR/SAPR process is FIPR's third approach to develop a viable alternative to the Crago "Double Float" process for phosphate flotation. SAPR stands for Single-collector, All-anionic Phosphate Recovery. The FIPR/SAPR process - offers a universal flowsheet for any anionic reagent system and flotation feed of varying sizes. For an unsized or fine flotation feed, the FIPR/SAPR process consists of the following steps: 1) high-solids conditioning with an anionic collector; 2) anionic rougher flotation, with the rougher concentrate sized at 48 (or 65) mesh and the +48 mesh recovered as a final product; and 3) cleaning flotation of the -48 mesh fraction from step 2. In a variation of step 2, the rougher concentrate from the first two cells may be collected as a final product, and the rougher concentrate from the last two cells sized at 48 or 65 mesh. The new process was tested with a blend of anionic collectors, achieving single-digit Insol at 85 + % recoveries.

The breaking of rock by explosives occurs so rapidly that the details of the phenomenon cannot he observed by the unaided eye. High resolution cameras and VCRs offer a means of slowing down the blasting action. A high resolution super video camera with digital zoom and a variable shutter speed was imported and used for the first time in India as a tool for blast optimisation studies at Malanjkhand Copper Project. Slow motion play-back revealed that the gases vented out through the fissures. The crest moved prior to the lower portion of the bench when initiated with detonating cord. The delay timing between the rows was not enough to provide sufficient relief and rock movement. This inadequate delay timing resulted in flyrock from the back rows. Stemming ejection was observed from practically all the holes. The muck profile was not satisfactory. A trial was carried out using 450 ms in hole delays and 25 nis surface delays. The front row holes were drilled based on the observations made from the laser profiling survey system. The video of the monitored blast showed that the rock started moving prior to the stemming ejection. It could be clearly seen that the entire block was completely initiated through the surface delays before the onset of the burden movement, thus eliminating any chance of misfires. Viewing blasts in high quality slow motion was useful to arrive at modified design parameters, resulting in uniform fragment size distribution and controlled rock movement.

Two previous reports Lave been issued by the Bureau of Mines on consumption of oils and other reagents used to flotation - namely, "Statement of Flotation Oils," by O. C. Ralston, issued in 1913, and Serial No. 2203, "Consumption of Reagents Used in Flotation," by Thomas Varley, for the year 1919, issued in January, 1921.

Ashton Mining Limited is currently one of the active companies undertaking gold exploration in Indonesia. Presently 7 Contract of Work areas are being explored for hard rock and alluvial gold. Hard rock exploration is focussed on the Tertiary volcanic arc terrains in which a variety of epithermal mineralisation styles have been identified. At the regional stage remote sensing techniques using Landsat, Spot and SLAR imagery where available, and photogeological studies are carried out in parallel with regional reconnaissance fieldwork programmes. These involve geological mapping and geochemical drainage sampling. Remote sensing techniques have proven useful in both the extrapolation of known geology and the identification of tectonically favourable settings as controls to mineralisation and volcanicity. The variety of mineralisation styles and settings is reflected in the highly variable geochemical signatures encountered. This has necessitated the refinement of sampling methods and sample preparation techniques for pan concentrate, stream sediment and soil samples in specific project areas. At the detailed prospect stage, mapping with particular attention to structural controls, wallrock alteration assemblages identified by petrog- raphy and XRD clay mineralogy, have proved useful in focussing drill targets. Drilling to date has utilised conventional diamond core drilling methods, the use of lightweight, man-portable "Winkie"-type rigs and hammer auger bedrock sampling systems. Geophysics methods successfully employed on various projects have included airborne magnetics and radiometrics, detailed ground magnetic surveys, VLF-EM and SIROTEM.

Millions of years ago, in late Cretaceous time before man existed on Earth, tremendous orogenic forces began to change the face of the western part of the North American Continent. Catastrophic events marked by huge uplifts of thousands of square miles in the Cordilleran Belt, some of which are barely discernible in the geologic record, were accompanied by long periods of batholithic intrusions and volcanic eruptions. These events produced the great Rocky Mountain systems, which were at the time even higher and more rugged than they are today. Such activity continued into Tertiary time, and during the Pliocene and Pleistocene periods millions of tons of volcanic ash were hurled skyward by explosive volcanic activity and carried by the westerly winds to the east where it settled out of the atmosphere and deposited over thousands of square miles of the high plains. Unusually heavy rains, probably caused in part by the volcanic activity itself, together with high winds, reworked and redeposited the freshly fallen ash into lakes and depressions of varying sizes and shapes. Subsequent deposits of sand, gravel and loess covered the deposits of volcanic ash, preserving them in the condition in which they are found today. In many places erosion has cut through the sand, gravel, loess, and volcanic ash so that in favorable localities on hillsides and gullies, exposures of volcanic ash can be seen interbedded with sand and gravel.
