In the southwest porphyry copper province, the virgin prospect with good copper mineralization cropping out has disappeared. Future discoveries will require an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of exploration techniques and concepts. One of the latter, stratigraphic analysis, is a technique which is often overlooked. A surprising number of exploration geologists still think of porphyry copper deposits as occurring wholly within intrusive bodies such as quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Disseminated copper mineralization, though genetically related to intrusive rocks, can occur within both the intrusive and the intruded rocks. At present, as much as 30% of the total copper produced from disseminated copper deposits in the Southwest originate from the intruded rocks rather than the intrusive. George M. Schwartz, in "Geology of the Porphyry Copper Deposits of Southwestern North America" points out that the host rocks at porphyry copper deposits include such diverse rock types as diabase, granite, limestone, dolomite, quartzite, skern, sericite schista, and others in addition to the more common monzonite, quartz-monzonite, and diorite porphyrys. Therefore, a porphyry copper can be defined as a disseminated copper deposit occurring either in or adjacent to a granitic-monzonitic-dioritic intrusive which can be exploited using bulk. mining techniques. The 70th Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Section of SME and the 58th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 22-24, 1997, in Duluth, MN. About 450 attended both. The Fifth Annual Trade Expo, held during the meeting, was attended by a record 80 exhibitors. An SME short course on materials handling preceded the meeting. Iron-mining and the steel industries highlighted the meetings. Specific topics in the keynote addresses and technical sessions primarily concerned iron mining, iron- ore processing, product (taconite pellet) transportation and the steel market. Although the iron mining industry held center stage, several papers outside of iron mining were also presented. Iron mining in Minnesota contributes $1 billion to Minnesota's economy. According to the Iron Mining Association of Minnesota, more than 20,000 state jobs rely on the industry. Minnesota's iron mining industry came through tough times in the early 1980s, mostly because of worldwide competition. However, the industry has shown significant improvement in the last 15 years. A large share of the steel industry's competitiveness in the late 1990s is due to cost and quality improvements in the taconite mines. The taconite industry has become more productive, largely through the application of new technology. Since the early 1980s, Minnesota's taconite mines have nearly doubled the number of tons per worker-hour. Most of the taconite reserves in the United States are located in Minnesota's Mesabi, Vermilion and Cuyuna iron ranges. The Mesabi range alone contains an estimated 24. A brief review is presented of the mechanisms and causes of spoil pile failures which have occurred at the Goonyella Mine. In particular, the results of a recent geo- technical investigation of the spoil dumps in the Cleanskin pit are briefly presented. Spoil pile hydrology is discussed in relation to the use of effective stress concepts in the analysis of spoil pile stability. Experience in relation to stabilisation of dragline dumps is discussed as well as the likelihood of current techniques being success- ful in the prevention of gross failures if prestrip material is placed in existing spoil piles. Parameters exerting a major control on dump stability are outlined.

From a study of coke samples obtained from the tuyere level of four Australian Blast Furnaces, the nature of in-furnace coke degradation has been investigated. At the periphery of the raceway is a concentration of fines and the lump coke appears dull and rounded. However coke from the deadman is angular and relatively undegraded. Cokes made from higher rank coal appear to suffer preferential attack of the reactive maceral derived component (binder). The coke from lower rank coal appears to be attacked non-preferentially by the solution-loss reaction. Initial attempts to simulate these phenomena have given results consistent with these findings. From chemical analysis of the tuyere probe samples there appears to be a relative increase in carbon and decrease in-.sulphur and phosphorous between stockline and tuyere level. An overall decrease in coke mineral matter derived material was noted and associated with this was a significant gasification of silicon. Consequent formation of silicon carbide was noted.

Introduction Clearly, many problems confront the minerals industry today. Yet, at the same time, there is too much energy spent bemoaning the negative effects of difficult economic circumstances, low metals prices, and adverse government policies. These are factors that cannot be altered by individual mineral company reactions. In fact, as we look to the future, the only thing we can be certain of is that we will continue to be faced with uncertainty. Thus, an area that demands close scrutiny and that can significantly affect a company's performance in the future is the posture it adopts to deal with uncertainty. This paper looks at how strategies are developing to deal with this issue. It also examines some of the implications that implementing such strategies have for the role of the individual explorationist. Elements of strategy Whether mineral company strategies are based on diversifying or retrenching, on emphasizing primary production or downstream integration, there seems to be increasing agreement that in the current environment strategies must have several features. They need to be information-based - developed out of access to timely and complete data and analysis about proposed directions and competitor activity, rather than simply following a current fashion. They need to be flexible - adaptable in light of changes in the marketplace and an unpredictable industry. And they need to be cost-efficient - making the most of limited resources. Whether a company is looking for gold financing opportunities, acquiring polymetallic prospects, or doing grassroots exploration for diamonds, these three elements are increasingly essential. They not only allow the company to pursue its current goals most expeditiously, but also open it to hearing and using feedback in the most constructive way. The company can then improve or change strategy as it proceeds. And it can be best positioned to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. These elements of strategy place great emphasis on the skills of the individual. The need for critical intelligence and the reduced amount of capital available to manage are making it more obvious that exploration is a "people" business. This is in accordance with a general trend in many sectors of industrialized economies, reflecting the widely discussed shift from smokestack to information-based industries. Increasing the odds There is a direct connection between successfully implementing the approaches to strategy discussed above and encouraging and improving the quality of work of the individual explorationist. To illustrate the importance of this, some commonly quoted figures on the odds of discovery success can be used. These figures are arbitrary but illustrative. Assume that one out of 100 exploration prospects actually turns out to be a promising ore body, and that one out of 1000 becomes a mine. Based on our research, chances are the most of those

Na produção de aços é essencial garantir maior durabilidade do material refratário em panelas siderúrgicas. A formação de um revestimento protetor (“coating”) de silicato dicálcico (C2S) em tijolos dolomíticos em contato com escórias básicas é fundamental ao aumento da vida útil dos mesmos. As temperaturas solidus e liquidus do C2S alfa puro são de aproximadamente 1.464°C e 2.154°C. Assim sendo, é esperada uma alta fração de sólido nas temperaturas de refino do aço. No entanto, a presença de óxidos como Al2O3, FeO e a fluorita (CaF2) na escória podem acelerar a dissolução do coating pela formação de fases de menor temperatura de fusão. A fim de melhor compreender esse processo, foram preparadas amostras de diferentes composições de fluorita + C2S na temperatura de 1.600°C. Os resultados foram analisados com o auxilio do software FactSage (simulação termodinâmica). Especificamente, foi estudada a influência da formação de fases e da temperatura de formação das mesmas, as quais levam a fusão do coating. Os dados de simulação foram validados através de ensaios em forno de laboratório.

BEAN1 has discussed the magnetic behavior of mixtures of small ferromagnetic particles on the order of 20 to l000A in diam. As he points out, there are three size categories with characteristic properties: 1) Particles large enough to contain many ferromagnetic domains magnetize initially by the motion of domain walls. The initial susceptibility of such particles, if domain-wall motion is assumed to be perfectly easy, depends only on their shape. It is equal to the reciprocal of the demagnetizing factor (and is thus 3/4 tt for a sphere) and is independent of temperature. 2) Smaller particles find it energetically undesirable to contain domain boundaries. They are always spontaneously saturated, and reverse their magnetization only by rotation of their entire magnetic moment. As assemblage of such particles has a remanence which is a large fraction of the saturation of the assemblage; its coercive force is on the order of 2K/1,, where K indicates magnetic aniso-tropy from any source, and I, is the saturation magnetization of the substance of which the particles are made. 3) Particles which are still smaller continue to be single-domain, but the direction of their magnetization fluctuates thermally, as first pointed out by Neel.' They have no remanence and no coercive force and possess the temperature-dependent magnetization curve of a paramagnetic substance with a very large moment. Bean calls this superpara-magnetism. All of these kinds of behavior are observable in alloys consisting of a precipitate of ferromagnetic phase in a nonferromagnetic matrix. A generalized void diffusion model for subsidence prediction has been developed based on theoretical concepts and physical principles. The general form of the model is a three-dimensional differential equation. With a few assumptions on the characteristics of overburden strata overlying typical room-and-pillar mining or longwall mining systems, specific solutions for the differential equation were obtained. A brief description of these solutions and their applications in the United States and China are presented in this paper.

The occurrence, properties, and uses of andalusite, and its advantages over other refractory minerals and materials, are discussed. Ore reserves are given for the five producing areas, and statistics on production, export sales, and prices are included to illustrate the growth of the industry since the early 1960s. The mining and beneficiation procedures are described, with special reference to new techniques in concentration and magnetic separation. As fines dumps represent a considerable source of andalusite, possible methods of recovery are discussed. . The outlook for the future appears favourable, and possible competition from other sources and substitute refractory minerals are mentioned. It is concluded that the industry is in a sound position to maintain South Africa's status as the world's foremost producer and supplier of andalusite.

This paper discusses general principles of underground opening design based on the concept that with the necessary input data regarding the geology of a site, the physical properties of the rocks, the in situ stress field in the rock and the general geometry of the underground openings, the rock formation can be classified into six major categories which are useful for design purposes. Using simple theories for the criteria of failure for rock In compression and tension, general elastic theory for stress concentration around openings and In structures, beam theory for stability of roof rock, and elementary inelastic theory for creep phenomena, basic design techniques are outlined for the various rock classifications. The need for field evaluation of the theoretical design is stressed and some general techniques that should be used in these field evaluations are discussed. Where appropriate, the need for additional studies and research is noted.

The commissioning of the prototype Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) in 1950 was a technological breakthrough in the pyrometallurgical smelting of zinc and provided significant advantages over the existing retort processes. However, for most zinc concentrates the electrolytic zinc process continued to be more economic. Therefore, the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) specialised in smelting zinc and lead concentrates that were less amenable for treatment by either the electrolytic zinc process or the lead blast furnace. Subsequently, improved mineral processing techniques led to a decrease in the availability of these concentrates so the treatment of secondary materials in the ISP assumed greater importance. This was facilitated by the development of techniques such as hot briquetting and tuyere injection. In 2002 over 1 million tonnes of zinc and 400,000 tonnes of lead were produced by the ISP. However, in the 2002-3 the economics of the Process became extremely difficult because of low metal prices and increased operating costs. This resulted in the closure of four ISP smelters in 2003 and two in 2005. Nevertheless, two new ISP smelters are scheduled for commissioning in China in 2006 where local economic conditions continue to favour the process. The economics of the process are examined particularly in respect of smelter margin and operating costs. The need to increase the smelter margin means that the future of the process will be closely linked to its ability to consume secondary materials and an examination will be made of its potential for conversion to 100% secondary operation. Apart from a reduction in raw materials costs, a substantial reduction in operating costs would ensue from not operating sinter and sulphuric acid plants.

In order to make a complete understanding of steel plant metallurgical dusts and to realize the goal of zero-waste, a study of their properties was undertaken. For these purposes, samples of two sintering dusts (SD), two blast furnace dusts (BFD), and one electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) taken from the regular production process were subjected to a series of tests. The tests were carried out by using granulometry analysis, chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy via SEM (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The dominant elements having an advantage of reuse are Fe, K, Cl, Zn, C. The dominant mineralogical phases identified in sintering dust are KCl, Fe2O3, CaCO3, CaMg(CO3)2, NaCl, SiO2. Mineralogical phases exist in blast furnace dust are Fe2O3, Fe3O4, with small amount of KCl and kaolinite coexist. While in electric arc furnace dust, Fe3O4, ZnFe2O4, CaCO3, CaO, Ca(OH)2 are detected.

"Autogenous (AG) and semi-autogenous (SAG) mills often operate in an unstable state because of the difficulty to balance the rate of replenishment of large ore particles from the feed with the consumption in the charge. This has led to an increased interest in obtaining an accurate and direct measurement of mill load and the behaviour of the mill charge. A problem in attempting to measure those parameters is getting a sensor that is both robust and sensitive enough for continuous on-line measurement.Techniques that measure the force acting on the lifter when it hits the charge inside the mill have got an increased interest recently because of the ability to combine it with DEM modeling. This paper presents a method for the measurement of the apparent filling level in a pilot ball mill equipped with the Metso Continuous Charge Measurement system (CCM). In this technique a strain gauge sensor is mounted on a flat steel spring which is fitted into a recess underneath a lifter bar. In addition, a conductivity probe, the Boliden Grinding Measurement System (GMS), is mounted in another lifter bar with the purpose of comparing the two measurements. To visualise the behaviour of the charge a 2D DEM modelling technique is used with Metso HFS software.The pilot mill is a grate-discharge mill, equipped with 12 rubber lifters of square size 0.1 m, face angle 45 degrees. Steel balls in the size range 10-30 mm and density 8000 kg/m3, are used in the experiments. Test material is a hematite pellet feed, d50 around 45um, chosen to get stable grinding conditions with respect to feed size variations.The experiment is meant as a first test of the equipment’s performance, and to study how the sensors respond to changes in some operating variables. To get an understanding of, and distinguish between correlation and causality, experiments are performed according to a full factorial design with two levels, and in addition two replicates of the experiments at a center-point in the charge level setting."

As an abrasive for cutting, polish-ing and sand-blasting, sand serves a vital purpose in many industries. Even lumber is now being sand-blasted, to cut away the softer grains of wood, leaving the harder grains in relief. The result not only in-creases the beauty of the wood, but adds to it an ap-pearance of antiquity. The common uses of silica in industry may be classified about as follows: Chemical industries-filtering medium; manufacture of carborundum; manufacture of water-glass. Paint-inert extender. Mineral fillers-wood filler; filler in rubber, hard rubber, pressed and molded goods, phonograph records.

THAT Colorado was producing oil and gas before the fields of the Mid-Continent were discovered is a fact too frequently overlooked. As early as 1862, oil was obtained in the Florence district (see Fig. 1) from seepages and shallow holes. The first well that could be regarded Fig. 1. as being truly commercial was drilled in this field in 1876. The field is now producing 100,000 bbl. per year, and is credited with a total production of approximately 11,000,000 bbl. The small field near Boulder, Boulder County, was opened in 1901; production has now practically ceased but the field is credited" with a total production of 610,000 bbl.
