In 1954, the first year the award was conferred, Fred Searles, Jr., remarked, "The earlier years are the easiest." In this, the second year, it was easy to choose the outstanding mining engineer. Our conferee this year has been destined to mine. He comes from pioneer stock, and though a son of the American Revolution he is most proud that all four of his grandparents came to the Jordan River Valley of Utah the "first summer," which all Utahns will recognize as 1847. At the time of discovery of high-grade ore in Bingham, his grandfather, Archibald Gardner, had a crew of men getting out saw timber in the area. The first claim staked in Bingham Canyon was named the Jordan, and Bishop Gardner was the colocator of the claim as well as the man to record it.

The literature of the occurrence of quicksilver-ore in the United States does not contain, so far as the writer is aware, any mention of the locality herein described. In the preliminary report * upon the resources of the transPecos region of Texas, von Streerwitz gives a long list of minerals observed as occurring there, but cinnabar is not mentioned. In the second report upon the same region † mention is made of the reported existence of cinnabarite in one of the mountain ranges north of the Sierra Carrizo and the Bofecillos, but the author adds: " In spite of my careful examination of the float, I have not yet found any traces of this metal (quicksilver) up to the present time." The relaxation peaks observed in plastically deformed materials at low temperatures have been reviewed by sack1 and Niblett and wilks. 2 In particular, the dislocation-relaxation in columbium has received considerable study.3-6 The present work deals with the lower-temperature dislocation-relaxation peak (referred to by Chambers and Schultz as the a peak) in columbium and Cb-5 pct Zr. The columbium and Cb-5 pct Zr specimens were machined to 3/8-in.-diam by 7-in.-long rods from bars hot-extruded at 1200°C. The internal friction and resonant frequency of the samples were measured in torsion at kilocycle frequencies at a maximum strain amplitude of -10-6. The interstitial content of both materials was approximately 70 ppm N and 200 ppm 0. The dislocation-re laxation peaks were measured in the hot-extruded state and after successive anneals. Fig. 1 is a compilation of the data. The resonant frequencies for the columbium and Cb-5 pct Zr samples were, respectively, 5.5 and 6.5 kc. Other workers have noted that the dislocation-relaxation peaks in columbium are not characteristic of a single relaxation time. As can be seen in Fig. 1, the zirconium addition further broadens the spectrum of relaxation times. The magnitude of the modulus defect as computed from resonant-frequency data also reflects this extension. The occurrence of the low-temperature a peak at a position 20°K higher in Cb-5 pct Zr as compared to pure columbium, in the hot-swaged state, suggests a decrease in the average dislocation mobility for the alloy. The authors do not feel that these data are sufficient to permit an interpretation in terms of any detailed models.

The northern Izu-Ogasawara Arc is characterized by an abundant distribution of submarine calderas along the volcanic front to the back-arc rift zones. In many of these calderas hydrothermal activities are observed. Among these calderas, hydrothermal ore deposits with economically feasible quality and amounts are hosted at two calderas, the Myojin Knoll Caldera and Beyonnaise Knoll Caldera. We conducted two research cruises in 2005 and 2006 to investigate further hydrothermal activities and ore deposits in these calderas and to complete the geological and geophysical mapping in the area. We discovered a strong signature of hydrothermal activity in the Myojin-sho Caldera using AUV capabilities. Newly obtained geological and geophysical data clarified the relationship between back-arc rifting tectonics and hydrothermal activities in the area. Five calderas (two of them newly found) and numerous (>200) volcanoes are mapped in the area. Complete SeaBeam coverage showed a distinct feature of the back-arc rifting activity and its relationship to the submarine calderas on the volcanic front. The back-arc rift zones composed of four segments separated by E-W trending volcanic ridges. Three of the calderas are located in the rift zone and are heavily deformed by the rift normal faulting that typically trend NNW-SSE. As the Beyonnaise Caldera is located in a swarm of faulting zones at the eastern end of the back-arc rift, the formation of the hydrothermal ore deposits found in the Beyonnaise Caldera are apparently affected by these faulting activities. Newly found submarine calderas are located in the rifting zone and are heavily faulted.

The rocks of New Zealand can be grouped into three main elements: the Early to Mid Paleozoic Western Province, Late Paleozoic to Early Cretaceous Eastern Province, and several overlying Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins. The Western and Eastern provinces were formed on or near the margin of Gondwanaland, whereas the Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins developed after the separation of New Zealand from Gondwanaland in the Late Cretaceous.   The Early to Mid Paleozoic Western Province rocks are exposed in Nelson, Westland and Fiordland and include metamorphosed sandstone, mudstone, limestone, and volcanic rocks, intruded by granite batholiths and maficultramafic igneous complexes. The main associated mineral deposits are gold-quartz lodes hosted by Paleozoic greywacke and argillite. Other type of deposits present include: volcanogenic massive sulphide lead-zinc; vein and greisen tungsten and tin; and magmatic nickel-copper sulphide, platinum group element, and magnetiteilmenite deposits. Granite stocks and batholiths, intruded during the Cretaceous, have associated porphyry molybdenum deposits.   The Late Paleozoic to Early Cretaceous Eastern Province includes the greywacke rocks forming the axial ranges of the North and South islands, and a belt of schists in Marlborough, the Southern Alps and Otago. The schists host many shear-zone related, gold-quartz lodes and, in the Southern Alps, lenses of serpentinite with talcmagnesite and nephrite jade. Volcanogenic massive sulphide copper deposits and volcanogenic manganesechert deposits, occur in both the schist and greywacke, and a belt of Permian age ultramafic rocks (Dun Mountain Ophiolite) has associated copper, chromite and chrysotile asbestos deposits.   The Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic rocks are found in a number of sedimentary basins onshore and offshore of the North and South Islands. Many of these basins developed during the rifting of New Zealand from Gondwanaland in the Late Cretaceous. They contain New Zealand's economic petroleum, coal and limestone deposits. Uplift and erosion of the mountain ranges shed gold into rich placer deposits in the South Island.   From the Miocene, volcanic rocks feature prominently on the eastern South Island (e.g. Banks Peninsula southeast of Christchurch and the Otago Peninsula northeast of Dunedin) and northern North Island (Northland and Hauraki), and volcanism continues today in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The North Island volcanic rocks have associated epithermal mineralisation, mainly gold and silver, but also copper, lead, zinc, mercury, and antimony, as well as deposits of sulphur, perlite, pumice and zeolite. Porphyry copper style mineralisation is associated with subvolcanic intrusive rocks. Erosion of the volcanic rocks has shed titanomagnetite onto the west coast of the North Island forming significant coastal placer deposits. Similarly, erosion of the Alpine schists in the South Island has resulted in placer ilmenite deposits on the coast of Westland.

The recent modernisation program at the Risdon electrolytic zinc smelter of Pasminco Metals - EZ (PMEZ) inyolved significant changes to the composition of cell electrolytes. The most significant were increased acidity and sulphate level, a reduction in Co level, and the replacement of 2-naphthol in the additive mixture with licorice. In determining acceptable operating ranges, a relatively large number of industrial deposition tests under controlled conditions was required. The cathode zinc deposits so produced were examined in terms of overall appearance, crystal structure according to X-ray diffraction, and a micro-roughness parameter. Beginning with typical deposits produced in the presence of an excess of one of the addition agents glue or antimony or a mist suppressant (licorice or 2-naphthol), a simple classification system was developed. In this system, the deposits are divided into the following types: Doughy, Pinholed, Compact and Stressed. There was a weak correlation between deposit type and crystal orientation. In terms of ease of stripping, observations in plant operations showed that only Compact and Pinholed were consistently acceptable. Current efficiency was normally maximised by producing a Compact deposit. Process variables such as zinc concentration, temperature and the use of strontium carbonate were found to cause changes in deposit type if the reagent mixture used was unchanged. From the knowledge gained, guidelines were developed to allow glue and antimony additions to be altered to fit new circumstances. The simple classification system was first used to expedite recovery from undesirable morphologies and then to optimise individual cell units operated under substantially different conditions. It is believed that finer control could be exercised by determining the micro-roughness of Compact deposits. However, difficulties can arise if sudden, large deviations occur and go undetected. Suggestions are given for an improved additive control system. The classification system developed has been compared with published information in the literature, and good correspondence was noted suggesting a predictable relationship between short-term, laboratory deposition tests and observable phenomena in industrial electrowinning cells run under steady conditions.

The need for a separate ventilation department within the management team was recognized by the management of U. S. Pipe and Foundry before the company was purchased by Jim Walter Corporation in January, 1970. Because the coal beds of the deep underground coal properties owned by Jim Walter Resources lay 1300 to 2200 feet below the surface, efficient mine ventilation practices are essential through shaft openings varying from 16 to 22 feet in diameter. The extremely high methane gas quantity indicated to be in the coal bed because of the depth of cover and documented by various U. S. Bureau of Mines tests and demonstrated by early mining proved the need to implement this early management decision. At U. S. Pipe and Foundry mine ventilation was a function of the Mining Engineering Department with ventilation personnel assigned to the mine receiving their day to day work assignments from the mine manager or mine foreman. At Jim Walter Resources, the General Manager - Ventilation reports to the Senior Vice President, Mining Engineering, who reports directly to the President, Mining Division, Figure 1 (Company Organization Chart). Position descriptions are static; however positions are dynamic and consequently the degree of emphasis of specific duties and responsibilities change depending not only upon the aptitude of the individual performing the job but also upon his ability to meet the needs of his supervisors; and ultimately upon his ability to react to the economic forces directing our society. The following describes the duties and responsibilities of the General Manager - Ventilation, Figure 2.

Most of the gold reef mined today in South Africa is approximately 1 m in width with slopes about 30 m long. To prevent production interruptions it is essential that the stopes should not be blasted in sections. The shortage of experienced labour and arduous working conditions at the face dictate the need for simple blasting techniques.Hence, a pyrotechnic blasting system of sequential firing is in use at present, although research work to improve this technique is in progress.

Reed, Jr. The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, "Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate," July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing "super"-concentrates prepared from magnetite or "blue dust" into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloys to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential. ?

Operation of a pilot heavy medium separation plant allows flexibility of operation not normally possible in an operating plant. Much useful data can be obtained, although some limitations apply. Projects carried out at AMDEL have included HMC separations at 1.5 to 3.6 specific gravity, comparative operation of HMC and DWP separators and the use of fine feed and product screens. Investigations of this type have provided a considerable amount of information on HMS plant performance and characteristics under a wide range of operating conditions.

Eastern coalfields have been extensively strip mined. In the past, contour mining left vast areas of post-mining highwalls and benches. Thin seams, which cannot be feasibly mined with conventional methods, quite often contain substantial reserves of high quality coal. Unconventional secondary recovery methods may permit economical production of that coal, increased use of reserves, and provide resources for restoration of orphaned land. Technical and rock mechanics implications of secondary mining methods are discussed to determine their limitations and the objectives of required research.

Valuations in the mineral industry differ from those of other enterprises because mines and oil wells have a definitive life so cannot be considered a perpetuity. This requires that in any mineral-property evaluation the recovery of invested capital is necessary during the life of the property. Capital writeoffs for nonextractive industries are assumed to be continuously plowed back to sustain the operation and produce yields on the capital invested. The extractive or mineral industry, however, generally attempts to return to the investor both interest and principal during the life of a property. Normally this is done currently and the dividend includes both items. Where the mineral properly possesses large reserves and the life factor approximates a perpetuity, the return on investment is generally comparable to that of industrial stocks. The valuation of a mineral property, at best, is based on educated estimates and judgment factors. This is particularly true as it relates to estimating selling prices over a long term or assessing the quality of management. Also, it is possible to make various assumptions as to rapidity of working out the deposit, varying time for start-up of operations, varying earning rates, so as to obtain different results with the same basic facts. Thus it is not surprising that two engineers, irrespective of their abilities, may not agree exactly even when given the same facts, but their results should be close enough to be used in establishing a fair value for trading purposes. The valuation is no better than the source of basic data and the soundness of judgment factors. Fundamentally the basic principles of mineral valuation are similar for base metals, sulphur, oil, or any other mineral. Each mineral, however, requires an engineer to have a knowledge of such factors as its occurrence, distribution, mining and processing methods, and marketing problems in order to gather and analyze all the facts and data that have a bearing on the earning potential of the property. It seems a common opinion among metallographists that all light-gray inclusions seen with the microscope in polished sections of steel are manganese sulphide. Examples of this belief are continually appearing, as for instance in the paper by Dr. Henry Fay on manganese sulphide as a source of danger in steel railsll and in Lieutenant-Commander Cook's paper on Metallography of Steel for U. S. Naval Ordnance.² Slate- colored inclusions are considered to be silicates, and dove-gray inclusions, manganese sulphide. To show the danger in the latter unqualified assumption, it should be sufficient to examine the edge of any piece of steel that is covered with a fairly thick scale, and that has been polished in such a way as to prevent the scale from breaking away entirely below the polished surface. INTRODUCTION OWENS LAKE is at present a source of important nonmetallic minerals, sodium carbonate (soda ash, Na2CO3); sodium sesquicarbonate (trona, Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H20) and borax, (Na2B407.10H2O). Owens Lake is a closed basin in the southern part of Inyo County, California, at the southern end of Owens Valley, east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and west of the Coso and Inyo Mountains. Broadly considered, it is in the Great Basin area, but at no time was it a part of Lake Lahontan. CLOSED BASINS Closed basins are phenomena of arid or semiarid regions where outflow is considerably less than inflow and where accordingly soluble salts concentrate in residual liquid. When inflowing waters originate in areas where the rocks are predominantly marine sediments, the residual basin liquid is primarily a chloride brine; if the rocks are largely igneous, the residual brine tends to be alkaline containing carbonates, and sometimes borates as well. Since normally, both types of rocks occur in regions contiguous to closed basins, residual liquids do not often fit into the two broad divisions mentioned. No two residual brines are exactly alike, just as no two ore deposits are exactly alike. Even out of the same closed basin, it is possible to get widely different analyses of liquids since underground and surface flows, as well as local evaporation rates and other conditions might have a marked influence on residual-liquid compositions. At Searles Lake, The American Potash and Chemical Corporation is building a plant to process a lower-level brine which is considerably higher in sodium carbonate and borax, and lower in potassium chloride, than that company has processed for many years. F. W. Clarke1 has classified waters of closed basins as follows: I Chloride type; largely sodium chloride (NaCI) and of oceanic type, such as Great Salt Lake. Related is the Dead Sea, a bittern residue of magnesium, potassium and sodium chlorides. 2. Sulphate type; largely sodium sulphate (Na2S04) with considerable sodium chloride such as Sevier Lake, Utah; Laramie Lakes, Wyoming; Dale Lake, California. 3. Carbonate type; high in carbonates and fairly high in sulphates, such as Moses Lake, Eastern Washington; and the Nebraska Potash Lakes. 4. Carbonate-chloride type; lower in carbonates than type 3 and about equally rich in sulphates, such as Pyramid Lake, Nevada. 5. Sulphate-Carbonate type; quite high in sulphates and carbonates, such as Pelican Lake, Oregon. 6. Triple type; considerable quantities of carbonates, sulphates and chlorides
