An enormous capital outlay is required to bring a new deep level (¦ 4 000 m deep) Witwatersrand gold mine into production. In addition, future mining methods must cater for rapidly rising working costs of which labour costs make up the largest portion. South African mining engineers are therefore being forced to challenge accepted design and valuation principles when planning these high risk ventures. New mining methods must be sought to satisfy the ever increasing need for productivity improvement. The technological problems posed by such changes cover a wide range of disciplines. Aspects of shaft design and configuration, besides being examined in the light of productivity, must also consider the rock mechanics implications at depth. Mining methods must anticipate and prepare for extremely hostile conditions due to seis- micity and virgin rock temperatures.

Production scale experiment study was carried out in a limestone open-pit for testing the theory and method proposed by the author(Zou, 1987). The results of experiments indicate that the mathematical model and computer programs, which include the consideration of both the three dimentional distributions of the weak planes and the energy densities of explosion stress waves, reflect the physical process of rock bench blasting quite well. The predicted fragment distributions coincide well with the practical fragment distributions measured with the photo-image analysis method proposed by the author(Zou,1989). The paper "A Three Dimensional Mathematical Model for Calculating the Rock Fragmentation by Bench Blasting in the Open-pit"(Zou,1987), which was published in some conferences and journals, has interested some scholors and researchers. In order to test and improve the model, a group of production scale experiments were carried out in a limestone open-pit during 1986-1987. The procedure and results of the experiments are illustrated in this paper.

Cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts are one type of the two oxidic metallic mineral resources in the deep ocean that incorporate metals supplied and transported from both land (aerosols, continental run-off) and sea sources (oxygen-minimum zone, hydrothermal alteration of the oceanic crust). The substances directly precipitate from cold seawater under more or less oxic conditions and form thin layers (2 up to 25 cm thick) on hard substrate rocks like volcanic hyaloclastites, weathered basaltic rocks and/or carbonate-fluorapatite; in the crusts many metals therefore exist in the highest state of oxidation. Deposits of the Co-rich ferromanganese crusts are found throughout the global oceans on the flanks, terraces and summits of seamounts and submerged volcanic mountain ranges and platforms, where the ocean currents have kept the seafloor more or less free of sediment for millions of years. The process of hydrogenetic precipitation is basically an inorganic colloidal-chemical and surface-chemical mechanism. Elements in seawater may occur as dissolved hydrated ions or as inorganic as well as organic complexes which in general have either a positive or a negative surface charge depending on the pH of the respective aqueous environment. Those complexes may form hydrated colloids that interact with each other and with other dissolved hydrous metal ions. Hydrated cations such as Co, Ni, Zn, Sn are, for example, attracted by the negatively charged surfaces of colloidal hydrous Mn-oxide particles, whereas hydrated anions (e.g. oxyanions) and elements forming larger complexes with low-charge densities (e.g. U, As, Th, Hf, REE) are attracted by the slightly positively charged hydrous Fe oxihydroxide particles.

The objective of this investigation was to determine the sensitivity of three selected input parameters in the operational control of continuous bottom fed thickeners used for the treatment of coal refuse slurries. The three variable parameters were "Feed Flow Rate," "Feed pH," and "Feed Solids Concentration." These three input parameters were studied under three cationic-anionic polymeric conditions. For each polymeric condition, two mathematical models were developed, one for overflow response and the other for underflow response. The combination polymers produced the best quality of overflow and underflow. For this polymeric condition, change in the feed solids concentration was the most sensitive factor in the maintenance of the overflow quality, and the feed pH was the most sensitive factor for the maintenance of underflow quality. The mathematical models generated a set of plots that would allow an operator to control and/or adjust any of the three variables to achieve optimum conditions.

Caterpillar and Fortescue Metals Group have moved forward with the delivery, installation and support of a complete Cat MineStar System at Fortescue?s Solomon iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The complete technology suite was implemented for the first phase of Solomon, the 20 Mt/a (22 million stpy) Firetail manned mine, in October 2012. As part of an autonomous mining solution for phase two, the 40-Mt/a (44-million stpy) Kings Mine, eight Command for hauling Cat 793F CMD trucks were commissioned and commenced operations in the second quarter of 2013. The mine plan calls for a progressive ramp up to 45 autonomous trucks during the next several years. In addition, other Cat MineStar System capability sets, Fleet, Terrain, Detect and Health, are being used across the mobile equipment fleet, including support equipment and light vehicles. Working closely with Fortescue and its mining contractor, Leighton Contractors, Caterpillar and the Cat dealer in Western Australia, WesTrac, are providing a full solution for managing, operating and supporting Cat MineStar System and Command for hauling. The greenfield Solomon Mine has brought together the skilled team from Caterpillar, Fortescue, Leighton Contractors and WesTrac to deliver an efficient, cost effective autonomous mining solution.

Thirty two polyacrylamide flocculant samples were selected from the wide range offered to the Australian coal industry. An extensive test program was conducted to consider the properties of the flocculants, the substrates, the process conditions and the water chemistry encountered in coal preparation plants. The study indicated that flocculants with molecular weights of 12 to 14 million and degree of hydrolysis around 40% gave the best "average" performance over a wide range of process conditions. The pick-up and filtration of fine coal was demonstrated on a pilot scale to be a critical function of flocculant properties. This study also showed that the agitation intensity during flocculation was a critical parameter in determining the settling rate of the slurry and the clarity of the resulting supernatant. An electronic meter to measure agitation intensity was designed, constructed and tested to demonstrate how, for the first time, laboratory results can be implemented in operating plants.

"The Athabasca Basin has been the scene of an intense exploration effort since the late 1960s, resulting in the establishment of this area as one of the major uranium districts in the world.The A thabasca Group is of Helikian age and unconformably overlies metamorphic rocks of Aphebian and Archean age. Most of the known uranium deposits have a close spatial relationship with the unconformity, graphitic meta-sediments, major northeast-trending structures and the basin edge. It should be noted that, in regard to the latter, some of the Cluff Lake deposits are exceptions.The pre-Helikian rocks underlying the Athabasca Group have been divided into six Iithostructural domains. The known uranium deposits are concentrated in the Wollaston and Mudjatik domains in the southeastern portion of the basin.The orebodies typically have a narrow high-grade portion below the unconformity and a broader, lower-grade disseminated zone in the overlying sandstone. Over-all grades average over 1% U3O8 and our estimate of known reserves totals more than 400 million pounds of contained U3O8. Some of the deposits have high concentrations of other metals, including nickel, arsenic, cobalt and gold. Ubiquitous chlorite and clay alteration is characteristic of the orebodies.Other Proterozoic basins in Canada of similar ages and having analogous geological settings to the Athabasca have received far less attention. Although little of the known uranium mineralization in these basins is related to the Helikian unconformity, there may be an exploration potential for deposits similar to those of the Athabasca basin.IntroductionThe Athabasca sedimentary basin is located within the Churchill Structural Province of the Canadian Shield in Northern Saskatchewan. The basin is elliptically shaped and is approximately 800,000 square kilometres in area.The objective of this paper is to summarize the various elements in the genesis of the unconformity-type uranium deposits of the Athabasca Basin and to evaluate the comparative potential of other Proterozoic basins to host similar unconformity-type deposits."

ThE shape of the primary solid-solubility limits in copper-rich Cu-Si-Zn alloys has been discussed recently1 in terms of the atomic size effects and the electron concentration, e/a. Although these limits are parallel to lines of constant e/a near the Cu-Zn binary system, they deviate and become sharply restricted near the Cu-Si binary system. Hence, it appears that the primary solid solutions with higher silicon contents are restricted by the presence of the intermediate phases, [, X, and p, which follow them in the ternary system. owever, a similar restriction in solid solubility might also result from an interaction in the copper matrix between silicon and zinc. Evidence for such possible interactions has been observed, for example, in the Al-Mg-Si systion.A where a contraction of lattice spacings in the ternary solid solution appears to correspond to an electrochemical interaction between the two solute elements, magnesium and silicon. The observed contraction is associated with restricted solid solubility. It was also shown1 that the extent of the primary solid solubility did not follow the trends predicted by the lattice-distortion oncept." This again suggested that the solubility limits are strongly affected by the stability of the intermediate phases, I, 1, and X . In order to test the above hypotheses, lattice-parameter measurements of the fcc @-phase alloys were determined within the ternary system at a constant electron concentration (e/a = 1.30) and also at a constant zinc content. Alloys of predetermined composition were prepared from high-purity metals and melted and cast under reduced pressures of helium in quartz capsules. Since the weight losses were very slight and did not exceed one part in 2000, the nominal compositions listed in Table I were accepted without chemical analyses. The ingots were homogenized

The mining industry has indeed gone global. International minerals producers are spending big money to move into countries that were off limits a few years ago. Due mostly to political reasons, these countries' huge mineral deposits - worth billions of dollars - were locked up and mining companies could only sit on the side and wonder "what if." Now much of the world is going the free market route. Once closed countries and developing nations are rewriting their mining and tax laws hoping to attract foreign investment to develop their natural resources. And big businesses - mining companies included - are lining up to get their share. But with new opportunities come new risks. While emerging nations are slowly accepting the free market concept and the privatization that goes along with it, many remain plagued with political instability and violence. Even developed nations carry their unique risks. Some of these include inadequate or contradictory legal and regulatory infrastructures, political patronage and outright corruption. So companies hoping to expand into new regions of the world must do more than examine the market. They must study the political stability and structure of a country, as well as its tax and environmental laws. And they must guarantee the safety of their employees. Control Risks Group is an international management consulting company that assists companies preparing to move into a new country. It employs about 225 people in 14 offices throughout the world. Control Risks personnel include lawyers, bankers and former law enforcement officers and intelligence people. The company held a one-day seminar in Washington, DC to update some of its clients on the state of affairs in various regions of the world. The seminar also covered extortion, corruption and product diversion. About 175 people attended the seminar. Speakers included Control Risks' operators, analysts and investigators. Mining was a widespread economic activity in the African Iron Age. This paper reviews the available evidence on, the archaeological, historical, ethnological, and technological aspects of early mining in the Transvaal. A number of analyses of ores found at archaeological sites (especially at Broederstroom) are reported, and an interpretation of the analytical results is suggested. Descriptions of Iron Age copper- and tin-mining complexes, and of iron-ore workings, are given, and techniques of Iron Age mining are discussed. The evidence of gold mining in Iron Age Transvaal is examined.

ERLE VICTOR DAVELER, who in his application for membership in the Institute in 1909 modestly described himself as "millman," was born at Denver in 1885 and graduated from the University of California in 1907. After a few months' work at gold mills in California he went to Tonopah, where for the next two years he had a varied experience working on pumps, convey- ors, tube-mills and filters. For the following two years he was experimental foreman and metallurgical engineer for the Utah Copper Co. at Garfield. He was sent in 1911 to be assistant superintendent of mills at the Ray. From 1913 to 1917 he was mill superintendent at the striking but unsuccessful experiment in large-scale low-grade gold mining of the Alaska Gold Mines Co.

"SUMMARY Injection grouting in rock around tunnels is used to reduce or stop water inflow. Little is known about the distribution of pressure within the rock mass during and after grouting. Instrumentation was developed to record pressure at the back of the packers inside the rock mass during injection grouting in order to improve our understanding of the process. Using this equipment measurements inside multiple injection holes during injection pumping have been made during several rounds of injection grouting in a tunnel. The data has been compared to the data recorded on the grout pumping rig and analysed to gain an understanding of the behaviour of grout injection process in the rock mass. The initial results are reported in this paper. INTRODUCTION Construction of a tunnel in soil or rock below the ground water table frequently results in the flow of ground water into the tunnel if the ground is permeable or fractures conductive. The injection of cement or chemical based grouts is frequently used during tunnel construction to reduce flow of water into a tunnel. Significant water flow into a tunnel is undesirable for several reasons: • there is a high cost in pumping out water over the lifetime of a tunnel; • drips and flows of water have to be diverted from the roadway or track; • where freezing conditions occur there is the possibility of ice build up and; • ground water levels may be changed possibly affecting surface water such as causing drainage of lakes and ponds, and changes in vegetation. Grout injection is most effectively done ahead of excavation to ensure that the grout penetrates the ground. Where heavy flows of water already occur into a tunnel the grout may be washed out before it sets. Normal practice in ground where water flows are encountered is to inject grout in a number of long holes ahead of the face with outer holes forming a ring around the proposed tunnel excavation – eventually forming a shield of grouted rock around the final tunnel, Figure 1. The holes may be sealed off a couple of metres into the rock with an expandable rubber plug around a pipe through which the grout can be injected, Figure 2. A one-way valve in the plug stops the grout from flowing back out of the hole when pumping stops and avoids grout flowing out through neighbouring holes. The rubber packer with a one-way valve permanently installed in the injection hole precludes the measurement of pressure down the hole when pumping is stopped."

POSTSCRIPT.*-Since the publication of my paper upon the blackening of the surface of rocks in desert regions, I have noted that similar views of the origin of superficial discoloration in the case of certain rocks from the Salt Lake basin of Utah have been expressed by Prof. George P. Merrill. In the pamphlet, he described the brown-coated weathered boulders from Tooele county, reaching the conclusion that the discoloration was due to the solution of the manganese and iron compounds 'in the interior of the boulder, while they were in the water, and the gradual bringing of this material to the surface through capillarity and its oxidation when exposed.

A practical approach to elope stability design of heap leaches up to 90 m (300 ft) high is presented based on recent experiences with heaps throughout the Western U.S. Shear strength parameters for foundations, ore and liner systems are considered, with particular attention given to frictional contacts between geomembranes and clay or geotextiles. Stability of both ore and containment dikes is discussed including the effects of seismicity, staged dike construction, progressive heap development and in-heap solution levels. Design criteria and methods of analyses are presented along with techniques for improving stability.

The demand for low sulfur steel by steel manufacturers and their customers has been steadily increasing for 25 years. Historically sulfur has been controlled by various means and with various additives but lime-magnesium external desulfurization of hot metal has become established as the dominant method in North America today. Magnesium powder produced from primary magnesium ingot has been the major source or raw material. However, periodic increases in the price of this commodity have encouraged producers to look to secondary magnesium for an alternate source of magnesium. Secondary magnesium from post-consumer scrap can be cleaned, sized, and prepared to produce a high quality magnesium reagent for use in hot metal desulfurization at a lower cost than material processed from primary ingot.

This report is part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Idaho Land Assesment Program to study the mineral resources of priority roadless areas in Idaho. The results of these mineral inventories provide minerals information needed to make wise decisions regarding future land management practices, and to ensure a dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost. The 16,300-acre Lionhead area, studied in 1991, lies along the Montana border north of Henrys lake, 10 mi west of West Yellowstone, Montana. The study area includes much of the rugged Henrys Lake Mountains, and is largely covered with conifer forest. Several peaks are over 10,000 ft in elevation. The Lionhead area has been proposed for Wilderness. No mineral resources were identified within or near the Lionhead study area. Five prospects occur in, or within 1 mi of the area: these include 1) an intermittently used road gravel pit, 2) the Thimbleberry lateritic iron prospect, of geologic and historic interest only, 3) the Tick Heaven talc prospect, 4) the Dry Fork garnet prospect, and 5) the lynx prospect, which appears to be of historic interest only. Talc is seen only as float at the Tick Heaven prospect, but the geology is permissive of talc resources at depth. The garnet prospect, and nearby similar alluvial terrane, mainly outside the study area, appears to be the most likely setting to contain mineable resources. Examined workings include four trenches and pits in rock and one gravel pit.

ThE tendency toward further oxidation of the intermediate oxides and the high volatilization rates of the higher oxides have prevented direct attainment of equilibrium data for the system tungsten-oxygen. As a result, St. Pierre et al.1 have proposed a phase diagram (to 800°C) based on thermody-namic data to 1200°C for the known tungsten oxides (WO2z, W18O49, W20O58, and WO3) and a report on a tungsten suboxide W3O.2 Recent modification of a technique previously described3 5 now permits adequate preservation of compositions of mixtures of metallic tungsten and metal oxides (e.g., of tungsten, cobalt, calcium, samarium, titanium) in order that condensed phase relations may be established to 1700 This method has been applied to study the high-temperature stability of tungsten oxides. In the method used, the desired compositions were sealed in nonreactive containers such that only a small gas volume remained. Each sample then established its own equilibrium atmosphere at temperature. This method has advantages in the study of systems of the W-0 type where knowledge of the condensed phases is desirable but for which composition and pressure of the gas phase are not readily attainable because of oxide volatility. At a number of mines in eastern Nicaragua, 3.5- or 5-ft. Huntington mills are used for grinding gold-ore after a pre-liminary breaking in jaw-crushers. The smaller mills are made sectional to facilitate transportation to the more difficultly accessible mines. The capacity of the smaller mills is about 20 or 25 per cent. that of the larger, but in proportion to the quantity of ore ground they require more power and are subject to greater wear. The notes herein given are from records of the performance of the larger mills at one of the mines, but, in general, apply to the smaller mills also. The Nature of the Ore. The ore occurred as a series of flat veins in a' highly-decomposed rock, probably alaskite. The primary mineralizatioll comprised pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and quartz; the oxidation-products of which were chiefly hydrated iron oxide or limonite, chrysocolla, azurite, and malachite. The kaolinization of the feldspar of the country resulted in the admixture of a great quantity of clay with the oxidized ore. The quartz was sandy, imbedded in the clay; and probably the greater part represented the residue from the crushed rock in the fissures after leaching, and kaolinization of the feldspar. There was little vein-quartz in the unaltered primary sulphide ore. Only the oxidized ore was mined for the gold that it contained in amouiits that averaged $4 per ton. No specks of gold mere ever seen in the ore, and the gold obtained by panning was always exceedingly fine. The amalgamation-bullion was about 800 fine in gold and from 60 to 80 in silver. The ore delivered at the mill contained from 5 to 15 per cent. of moisture; during the rainy season the quantity was much greater.
