INTRODUCTION The surface processes involved in preparing ores for flotation and for operations depending on their flocculation/dispersion characteristics * vary widely in agitation dependence. Most of the reagents used for these purposes are added to grinding circuits, pump sumps, launders, or directly to flotation cells with the turbulent flow conditions usually adequate both for mixing reagents and for surface reactions without special conditioners. However, some reagent systems do require specific control of agitation intensities and reaction times, the more important of these being the following: 1. Activation of ZnS with CuSO4. With the usual conditions pH about 10, with collector added with the CuSO4, Cu 2+ is almost completely precipitated as basic compounds and as collector salt. As a result the levels of reagent in solution are extremely low which probably accounts for the need for separate conditioning. The agitation intensities are at about the 0.01 HP/ton level.** 2. The coulombimetric reduction method has been used as an evaluation technique for Pb-Ca-Sn anode corrosion in the LIX-SX-EW process. The proposed methodology involves three consecutive steps, i.e., cleaning, oxidation and reduction. They are carried out in the same experimental unit, in solutions containing 180 g/L H2S04 with and without the addition of cobalt. The authors have worked in a wide range of oxidation current densities, from 150 to 500 A/m2 for in a period from 0.5 to 120 hours. It can be concluded from the results that there would be a linear relationship between the applied electrical charge I*T (Coulomb) and the anode corrosion expressed as transformed Pb mass (mg), for solutions with or without the addition of cobalt. The exception is that for the last one the corrosion rate is 5 times faster, which was observed for every layer. From the evaluation of different corrosion layers, one can point out that its composition is mainly in the form of sulphate. In the presence of cobalt, about 67% of Pb would be as sulphate (PbSO4), about 27% as a basic oxide (PbO) and only 6% as oxide PbO2 on the surface. From this result, it appears that great transformations occurred in the metal/sulphate interface. Without the addition of cobalt, the proportion of oxide Pb02 on the surface increased up to 11.5%. According to the previous statement and considering that Pb was found mainly as sulphate, the authors recommend its determination be used as quality selection criterion. Its evaluation should be performed in the acid solutions with 200 ppm cobalt addition at an oxidation current density of 300 A/m2 for a period of 24 hours.

This paper describes the slope design case history for Fleming NO.3 mine and illustrates the application of modern techniques. The new design has resulted in significant financial savings due to a reduction in required waste stripping.

Ante la existencia de un número de zonas inestables y de magnitudes proporcionalmente grandes en las operaciones de minado, se requería de un monitoreo continuo en tiempo real que genere información confiable con exactitud y precisión referente al comportamiento crítico de los taludes para luego evaluar, alertar anticipadamente los colapsos y evacuar de forma segura y oportuna al personal y equipos. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el mejoramiento del monitoreo de taludes a través del uso de radares donde se pudo identificar zonas críticas de desplazamiento de taludes con el fin de mejorar la seguridad del personal, equipos y garantizar la continuidad de las operaciones para asegurar el cumplimiento de los programas de producción de la Mina Cuajone.

The strength variation ofWC-Co alloys with composition and particle spacing falls into two ranges. 1) Above a critical value of the mean free path, the strength follows a dispersion hardening relation; it is proportional to the volume fraction of WC and in-versely proportional to the particle size. 2) Below a critical value of the mean free path, the strength variation is based upon the Griffith criterion of fracture and is controlled by the case of crack propagation. The maximum strength is attained when the structure and load just satisfy the critical conditions for spontaneous crack propagation. THE relation between the strength and the structure of cemented carbides is of interest not only for its own sake but also for its contribution to the understanding of composite materials in general. The cemented carbides are essentially aggregates of a brittle carbide constituent and a ductile binder phase and, at certain structures of intermediate composition, the composite alloys attain strengths far higher than those of the separate constituents in bulk. It is this variation of strength with structure which will be discussed. The experimental procedures of sample preparation, mechanical testing, and quantitative metallo-graphic analysis have been described in Ref. 1. The reported strengths are the maximum fiber-stresses in bending calculated on the basis of completely elastic behavior. The plastic contribution to the over-all deformation is small and was neglected in the calculations (the elongation at fracture of the most ductile alloy, 50 pct WC-50 pct Co, is less than 0.5 pct).2 The pertinent structural parameters are: f, the volume fraction of tungsten carbide; p, the mean free path through the binder phase; the contiguity C, defined as the average fraction of surface area shared by a particle of wc with all neighboring particles of the same phase; and d, the average equivalent spherical diameter of the WC particles. The strength variation of WC-Co alloys with composition and particle spacing is shown in Fig. 1 and Table I, which are based partly on previously published data' and partly on new experimental work which extends the range to higher values of the mean free path. Australis Mining N.L. operates a continuous mode carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold plant, processing sand and slime tailings from previous gold mining operations in the Norseman area. Plant design is that of conventional countercurrent contact between pregnant pulp and activated carbon. Gold desorption is achieved by the Zadra process using near boiling tempera- tures and atmospheric pressure. Process water is drawn from nearby Lake Cowan (saline). The plant operates at, or above, design specification of 400 dry tonnes per day. This paper describes the plant design and operating processes utilised in optimising throughput and gold recovery. TNTDnPTTnmTnM Favourable world gold prices and substantial reserves of sand and slime tailings prompted Australis Mining N.L. to construct a gold extraction plant during 1981. The projected plant throughput was set so as to complete treatment of available tailings over a three year period. Metal- lurgical tests indicated that, with a regrind facility satisfactory gold recovery could be achieved using a countercurrent CIP process. Reflecting the entry of Australis Mining N.L. into its first large scale treatment operation, the plant design emphasised simplicity but effectiveness of Operation.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 47,000-acre Electric Peak study area (part of the formerly-designated RARE II Non-wilderness Recommended Area no. 1609) to evaluate its' identified mineral resources. The study area is in Powell and Jefferson Counties, YT, about 30 mi southwest of Helena and 30 mi north of Butte. Three lode localities within the study area contain an estimated 159,000 tons of identified subeconomic resources containing gold, silver, and accessory lead, copper, and zinc. Resources at those localities range from 10,000 to 134,000 tons with grades ranging from 0.04 to 0.32 oz/ton gold, 0.92 to 16.42 oz/ton silver, 0.14 to 79.65 percent lead, and as much as 0.41 percent copper and 0.68 percent zinc. One property also contains 0.15 percent antimony. Gold, silver, and base-metal content in samples of poorly exposed mineralized structures indicate that further exploration may identify resources on seven additional study area localities.

The purpose of my visit was to observe the use of explosives in mining and tunneling in a coal field 500 miles south of Peking near Hsu Chou in Kiang Su Province. Metal producers are now suffering through a major downturn in prices for their products even though it has only been a few years since they were enjoying high prices. From an historical perspective, the current situation is another of the cyclical downturns that often occur every five to seven years. This paper uses time-trend decomposition techniques to identify the cycles and statistical methods to find the duration of these cycles for a variety of metal prices. Given some idea of how long and severe these cycles typically are, the mining industry can better plan to weather the downturns and take advantage of the upturns. For example, timing investments in new projects to take advantage of the cyclical upturns can dramatically improve project profitability.

The Mineral Creek Diversion Project is at the Asarco Ray Mine Complex, about128 km (80 miles) east of Phoenix, Arizona. The new tunnel will intercept the waters of Mineral Creek about 2,134 m (7,000 ft) upstream from an existing tunnel. The 5.74 m(18.83 ft) hard rock TBM will break into the old tunnel about 2,162 m (7,090 ft) in from the old portal after mining 3,888 m (12,753 ft). The TBM will mine through a series of igneous and metamorphic formations including volcanic tuff, soft volcanic ash, massive diabase, fractured quartzite, and schist. The TBM will hole through into the existing 4.88 m (16 ft) dia. horseshoe tunnel where the TBM will be disassembled and removed from the tunnel.

Through the stress synthesis of many examples of macrostructure in the middle of China, it can be concluded that in the middle of Chinesetectonics there are two compression-torsion-forces, one of which ( from NW to SE ) came from the northwest side of Aerjinshan abyssal and giant fault("F1A", see Fig.7,8,9 ); the other (from S to N ) came from the south side of the north piedmontal fault of Kunlunshan-the south piedmontal fault of Qinlingshan ("F2K-F2Q", see Fig-7,829 ).Owing to the two compression torsion forces a new special type of structure named rotation-apart structure occurred from Chaidamu basin to Hebai, Henan, Anhui plain,from Caledonian movement, Hercynian movement,Yenshan movement to Himalayan movement, step by step In the north of Qilianshan during the late Caledonian movement: during the Hercynian movement it extended into a vast area including the Chaidamu basin and Eerduosi basin; during the Yenshan movement it spread over the whole area of Helanshan,Eerduosi basin and Hebai , Henan, Anhui plain. In the period of Himalayan movement all these structures revived .The rotation-apart structure controlled the distribution of all mineral deposits and also were the mineralizing structures.The relation between these rotation-apart structure and earthquakes is very close.

FROM its inception, a limestone quarry or mine should be under the direction of a capable engineer. Before it becomes a reality, he should outline the future results, plan the most economical methods for moving the materials and the most efficient equipment, and pilot the undertaking along the narrow pathway of success, avoiding the pitfalls of uneconomical production and the precipitous walls of scanty profits. Inspection of successful limestone properties shows that all have had difficult engineering problems, the solution of which have required keen engineering ability. In approaching a subject of this nature, it is logical to follow the progress of the limestone operation from its inception to the end, as reflecting the engineering required. There are four major divisions: Investigation, equipment, development, and operation.

For the past few years, the Cyprus Bagdad Copper Company began experiencing a significant "ore-dilution" problem from its low grade open- pit copper mine located at Bagdad, Arizona. To pinpoint the causes of this dilution, a study was initiated to investigate as well as to improve in-pit ore-waste selection-procedures using conditionally simulated ore-bodies. Prior to the actual use of conditional simulation; a comparison of different estimation methods for a mined-out area in the pit was performed. Specifically, kriging estimates were compared against the original estimates of the company which were based on the polygonal approach. The results of this comparison clearly identified part of the so- called "ore-dilution" problem, which was the initial over-estimation of average ore grades from blast rounds, using the polygonal approach. The results from the use of conditionally simulated orebodies demonstrated that the "ore-dilution" problem can be reduced by more than half if in-pit ore- waste selection is based on the kriged estimates rather than the polygonal estimates. This simulation study also showed that the current use of the polygonal approach has the effect of shipping a larger tonnage of lower grade material to the mill.

Ferrous fractions recovered from urban refuse were tested by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to assess their character, composition, and response to detinning. This research was conducted as part of the Bureau's efforts to conserve mineral resources through recycling. Results from laboratory and pilot tests established the technical feasibility of detinning scrap recovered from household refuse. Detinned products containing less than 0.03 percent residual tin were produced. Concentrations of other residual elements were determined and compared with those in existing commercial scrap and with proposed specifications. Studies were extended to include evaluations under commercial conditions. Preliminary tests on 5-1/2 short tons of ferrous fractions revealed the need for adequate shredding to assure optimum metal-caustic contact and minimize retention of tin-bearing rinse solution in the final baled product. The washed metal product contained 0.06 percent residual tin. Subsequent melt tests showed a yield of 91.4 percent. Based on these studies, full-scale commercial demonstrations showed that detinned bales equivalent to No. 1 bundle quality could be produced in carload quantities. Up to 5 pounds of tin per gross ton of scrap is con-currently recovered during the detinning process.

In 1941 Illinois produced 134,139,000 bbl. of oil, or 9.5 per cent of the total for the United States, and ranked fourth among the states. The production for 1941 declined 9.2 per cent from the previous year's total of 147,647,000 bbl. Daily average production for 1941 was 366,000 bbl. At the beginning of the year daily production was slightly more than 326,000 bbl. and it remained at appoximately that amount until June, when there was a slight increase. The increase continued until the peak of 431,260 bbl. daily was reached for the week ending Oct. 4. Daily average production at the end of the year was approximately 387,500 barrels. The increased production during the last half of 1941 was largely due to the rapid development of the Johnsonville field, Wayne County, the Rural Hill field, Hamilton County, and the Benton field, Franklin County—new fields discovered in the current year (Fig' 1)—and the Woodlawn pool, discovered in 1940. Discoveries In 19 counties in southern Illinois, 44 new fields were discovered in 1941 (Fig. 2 and Table 2), and extensions to 40 fields were successfully completed (Table 3). At the end of the year there were 10,496 wells in the fields discovered since Jan. I, '937, as compared with 71965 wells at the end Of '940. The area proved for production in the new fields increased from 78,040 acres at the beginning of 1941 to 97,483 acres at the end of the year (Table I)—an increase of 19,433 acres, of which 9,955 acres are in the fields discovered during the current year, and the remainder of 9,478 acres in extensions to pools discovered earlier. Drilling During the past year, 3838 wells were completed in Illinois (Table 4), of which 2912 were oil producers, 13 were gas producers and 913 were dry holes; 76 per cent of the wells drilled were producers. Of the total number drilled, 591 wells are classified as "wildcat" and of these 84 (1 in 7) were successful in obtaining production. The results of an investigation to ascer-tain the reason for the locations of the wildcat wells are set forth in Table 5. Of the 591 wildcat wells, the 292 known to have been located by scientific methods were 21.6 per cent successful. The total footage of wildcat wells drilled in 1941 was 1,341,743 ft., of which a total of 216,995 ft. was drilled in successful wells. Exploration MEthods Subsurface geology and geophysics, largely the reflection seismograph, are still the principal methods used in exploration and development in the state. The number of seismograph parties operating throughout the year was as follows: seven parties on Jan. I, 1941; five on Apr. I; four On July I; eight on Oct. I; fifteen on Jan. 1: 1942.

F many years it has been suspected that a correlation existed between pits produced by etching and the density of dislocations in crystals. In 1953, the interest in this correlation was greatly stimulated when Vogel et al' demonstrated a 1:l correlation between etch pits and dislocations in low angle grain boundaries of germanium. About two years ago, the author began attempts to produce etch pits at dislocation sites in zinc mono-crystals. These attempts met with success a year or so ago,' and since that time a survey has been made of the etch pit patterns that are associated with various modes of deformation in zinc monocrystals. Unfortunately, the etching technique that will be described is too delicate for use as an accurate quantitative tool. Nevertheless, it has been of considerable assistance in clarifying the structure of plastically deformed crystals. Technique Many attempts were made to produce etch pits in high purity zinc crystals. It was found that several techniques would produce surface grooves at grain boundaries that had misorientation angles greater than about l°, but no technique was successful for boundaries with smaller angles. Among the things that were tried were: electrolytic CrO, (both etching and polishing concentrations), HNO, in various water and alcohol solutions, dilute HC1, many 0-0,-Na,SO, solutions, Cr0,-HC1 solutions, picral, electrolytic Na,S,O,, and electrolytic NaOH and KOH. A few attempts to use cathodic sputtering and thermal etching were also made.
