This paper will review the experiences of both big and small exploration/mining companies (local and foreign investors), including the impediments to exploration and project development in Indonesia since the Contract of Work was first introduced there (1967 Minerals, 1981 Coal). This is seen through the eyes of a person who has been employed in a managerial capacity in large and small concerns, and more recently as an independent consultant. Comment will be made on the political, legislative and social constraints imposed by the presence of a large group of disparate artisans (illegal miners) who now form a significant component of the Indonesian mining industry; the Bre-X debacle; the impact of the recent Regional Autonomy legislation; and changes to the Mining, Forestry and Environmental Acts. An overall view (including statistics) will be presented as to how recent Indonesian developments have affected international confidence in investing in its mineral sector over the past decade and it will be placed in an international competitive context.

In order to see the sand mining industry in the context of the coastal plain environment, the following points are noted. The coastal plain comprises several different geomorphological and ecological entities, some or all of which may be profoundly different from their condition before European colonisation, Sand mining is only one of a number of competing land uses which modify the environment of a given area. The frontal dune system in particular has undergone considerable deterioration and with the pressures of an ever increasing population, this deterioration will accelerate until an adequate control policy is Implemented.

A description of the factors causing outbursts and rockbursts in coal mines is given. The mechanics of both outbursts and rockbursts can be described in terms of conversion of stored strain energy in the coal and surrounding rocks into kinetic energy through failure. The major difference between the two phenomena is that gases adsorbed onto the coal structure and desorbed during deformation contribute to the energy available during outbursts and may also affect the loading and unloading characteristics associated with failure. The amount of energy involved and the type of phenomenon are related principally to gas content depth and rock behavior.

The extraction equilibrium study of tetravalent platinum was carried out using tri-octyl/decyl amine (Alamine 336) and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) monothiophosphinic acid (Cyanex 302) in kerosene from hydrochloric acid media to investigate their extraction capacity, since they have different donor atoms, ?N? and ?S?. Their distribution equlibria were studied as a function of acid, extractant, diluents and temperature. The title metal shows the inverse behavior at higher acid concentrations. Extraction of tetravalent platinum increases with increase of extractant concentration. The plot of log D vs. log [Extractant], mol.L-1 is linear with slopes 1±0.3, indicating the association of one mole of extractant with the extracted metal species. Stripping of metal from the loaded organic (LO) with mineral acids and bases such as hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric acids and ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, thio- urea were studied. Regeneration and recycling capacity of Alamine 336/Cyanex 302 and extraction behavior of associated elements was also studied.

Gold has received a growing interest as a catalyst for the selective oxidation of organic molecules using oxygen under mild conditions1. In the liquid phase application small gold particles (2.5-7 nm) deposited over different solid supports can be used but, like many other noble metals, their catalytic activity depends upon the nature of the support and the preparation metod2-5. In particular, gold on carbon is the preferred catalyst for the oxidation of the alcoholic 2-7 and the aldehydic7-9 groups and one of the best preparation method is the immobilisation of colloidal particles2-5,8,9. Suggested application of gold catalysis in fine chemicals production, tested on laboratory scale preparations, is reported in table 110. In order to produce more efficient catalysts for the liquid phase oxidation and to derive new insights into the reaction mechanism, we have made a comparison among catalytic systems based on different metals. The first effort was to test the activity, if present, of naked metal particles and then to study the influence of various materials commonly used as a support.

Probably one of the most perplexing problems with which a mill operator contends is the proper evaluation of his mill results. True, he accurately determines his recoveries of metals and grades of products monthly, weekly, and often daily. These figures do not of themselves directly translate to mill economics. When one figure is unusually good there may be an offsetting circumstance. The advantage of high lead or zinc concentrate grade may be offset by poorer recovery; high lead recovery may be offset by poorer zinc recovery, or vice versa; and so on. Besides, grades or recoveries may not of themselves mean more than a reflection of the grade and character of the ore during the period under study. What the operator sorely needs is some one measuring stick that tells him when he has achieved his greatest return, regardless of grades or recoveries—for if he knows his methods and practices are yielding the optimum return he need no longer concern himself with the assays of products and tailings, or the corresponding distribution of metal values. At first blush it would appear that the obvious answer to this is the actual money return to the mill. Paradoxical as it may seem, however, money return does not make a dependable yardstick any more than do grades and recoveries, as ore condi- tions would vary enough to bring about greater money return during periods when the actual metallurgical work is not as good. The mill operator, of course, should always aim for the greatest return on the ore, once it is in the mill bins, with proper attention always to mill treatment cost. The need of a proper yardstick becomes more imperative with the increasing complexity of the problem. In the case of a simple, single-product operation on a fairly uniform ore, in which only one metal is of significant importance, the need is not great, as grade and recovery pretty well tell their own story. At the other extreme is the operation that makes three or four separate marketable products from a complex mixture of heterogeneous ores that vary tremendously in individual metal contents and ratios, degree of oxidation, and other characteristics, and in which gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc are all significant values. Economic Recovery The first attempt at obtaining a proper single yardstick for a fairly complex ore with which I am familiar is the use of the ''Economic Recovery" term at the lead-zinc flotation mill of the Sunnyside Mining and Milling Co., Eureka, Colorado. This method had been applied there early in Sunnyside flotation-mill history (not later than 1920) and credit for the innovation I believe belongs to Messrs. Kuryla and Marquand. It is good practice that the selection of survey parameters ensures that the signal to noise ratio is optimised, while minimising survey cost.Sampling considerations for any geophysical method include the size of the target, scale of observation, aliasing associated with station and line spacing, nature and extent of overburden, and the presentation of data.As a guide to survey design, the specifics are discussed for three geophysical techniques in common use in mineral exploration; these include the magnetic method, transient electromagnetics and induced polarisation.

This is the dawning of the computer age in process control. As 1968 drew to a close, many plants had computer installations which were being used for logging, monitoring and reporting. Today, computer usage is given serious consideration before the construction of any major minerals processing plant. Unitized automatic control of individual processes is abundant. Many plants are considering closing these control loops, i.e., allowing the computer to direct the operation of the controllers (Digital Analog Control-DAC). The next step is to make the computer itself the controller (Direct Digital Control-DDC)1 Perhaps the most important future use of computers will be in controlling interrelated operations and control units. Progress along these lines depends on the steadily improving capabilities in the field of mathematical modeling.

It is customary to ascribe two general modes of occurrence to natural gas, namely, shale gas which, as the name indicates, is found in shale, and reservoir gas, which occurs in sandstone, conglomerate and dolomitic limestone. Both of these types are found in the Cleveland district. The shale gas has been produced on a small scale for a long period of years, probably dating back as far as 1883. Shale gas is a low-pressure gas, small in volume with variable pressure, and is limited to no definite horizon. It is generally independent of oil, may last for a long time, and is not dependent to any great extent on the structure of the rocks. There are many such wells in the district which range from 400 to 1,840 ft. in depth, although most have been completed at about 800 ft. This indicates that the wells pass through the Cleveland and Chagrin shales into the Huron or Portage shale of the Upper Devonian. During the last 2 years great interest has developed in a deeper-seated reservoir gas. What is commonly called reservoir gas is generally a high-pressure gas occurring in large volume at a definite horizon. Oil may, or may not, be associated with the gas, and in most regions in which reservoir gas is found, the geological structure is of great importance. This type of gas occurs in all large fields such as those of West Virginia which have been supplying Cleveland until the recent discovery of local gas at great depths in commercial amounts. Historical Outline The oldest well producing reservoir gas in the district was drilled in 1886 in Newburg for what was then known as the Cleveland Rolling Mill Co. This well was 3,000 ft. deep, and was thought to have reached the "Clinton" formation. Two "sands" showing small amounts of oil were recorded in the Niagara limestone at depths of 2,658 and 2,686 ft. This is about the horizon of the so-called Newburg sand which has proved to be of some importance as a source of gas and oil by recent drilling operations. The rock pressure was reported to be 400 to 500 lb. per square inch, but since the volume was only 14,000 to 16,000 cu. ft. daily, the well was not only considered unsuccessful but was thought to prove the absence of high-pressure gas in commercial quantities in the Cleveland district.

The in-situ stress field was determined, using the overcoring technique, at two underground sites at the Pea Ridge Mine, Sullivan, Missouri. At one of the sites in magnetite, the three dimensional stress field showed the largest principal stress to be compressive (-4564 psi), nearly horizontal and closely parallel to the strike of the orebody. The smallest principal stress was also compressive (-2047 psi) and nearly vertical. Considerable difficulty was experienced in drilling porphyry rock at the second test site in the host rock. Only one hole was drilled at this site. The secondary principal stresses obtained in the porphyry are -9464 and -4945 psi, respectively. The-test site in magnetite is located at a depth of 2505 feet whereas the site in porphyry rock is at 2475 feet. The vertical stresses: due to overburden loading at these sites are -3590 and -2782 psi, respectively. Field determined values of the vertical stress are -2207 and -5098 psi, respectively. The variance; between the two sets of values is most likely attributable to the orebody formation and the differences in the modulii of the host rock and the orebody.

Radon concentrations in shallow uranium mines such as the Bureau of Mines experimental research mine are affected by barometric pressure changes. The radon concentrations show a significant correlation with absolute pressure; but over a period of days, a steady rise or fall in barometric pressure will result in noncorrelation of data. Fan shutdowns also affect radon concentrations, and an equation was derived to determine the time required for the radon concentration to return to normal after a fan shutdown, whether the ventilation is blowing or exhausting.

In Silver Plume, Colo., there is a bachelor miner who offers individualized tours of his mine, The Silver Cloud. It is an interesting tour because he drove the mine himself and the view from the shack up there is spectacular. Beside that, he will probably invite you into his kitchen to sit around the old cook stove and drink coffee. When Andy first started his tour business he put a sign on the main street to advertise the fact. The sign read in part: "Women not welcome, but they will be tolerated at $3.00 a head”- the usual fee is $2.50. The sign lasted about 48 hours. Andy had to take it down because "all the ladies in town got mad at me. Now I take them all for $2.50 right across the board," he says. The mining industry is not only reticent about hiring women but traditionally does not even permit women to enter some mines. It would appear, what with the recent action on an equal-rights-for- women amendment in Congress, that we may be wise to examine the prospect.

TWO-LIQUID miscibility gaps have been found to exist in both the CaO-SiO, system above 1705 and the Cr,03 system above 2200"c. Glasser and 0sborn3 studied the extension of these miscibility gaps into the Ca0-Si0,-Crz03 ternary system and reported that the two-liquid region is not present at temperatures below the monotectic temperature of 1705°C in the CaO-SiO, system. The present authors, in connection with other work on surface-tension measurements and foam stabilities in the same ternary system,4 observed that the miscibility gap exists at temperatures as low as 1600°C. A brief experimental study was devoted to deter- mining tie-line positions in the two-phase region. The technique used was to obtain a separation of phases at 1600°C, then to quench-in the high-temperature phases and obtain a chemical analysis of each phase. It was necessary to take special precautions in obtaining a phase separation because of a tendency toward emulsification of the two liquids. The procedure followed is described in the schematic drawing in Fig. 1. A small platinum crucible containing several pinholes on its sides was placed inside a larger platinum crucible. An excess of Crz03 was placed in the outer crucible, together with a prefused binary CaO-Si02 mixture, and the Cr203 was allowed to diffuse through the pinholes and saturate the same binary CaO-SiOl mixture in the smaller crucible. After equilibration at 1600°C, the inner crucible contained only the lighter liquid (liquid A) saturated with Cr203. The outer crucible contained layers of both liquids. Experimental data were obtained by analyzing the entire contents of the inner crucible and only the bottom layer of the larger crucible (liquid B). The upper layer of the outer crucible was not suitable for chemical-analysis purposes because dispersions of the second phase sometimes were found in the samples. The technique is described in more detail in Ref. 4. The same method was used by Grieveson and urkdoan' to study a miscibility gap in sulfate-ferrite melts, where the liquids were difficult to separate because of similarities in density. An industry-wide demand for bigger and more efficient trucks, with their supposed economies of scale, is well established. Some trucks have been, and often are brought "off the shelf," with the manufacturer offering only certain minor options, much as in the private automobile industry. The market is well established; there is keen competition; in recent years there have been few significant changes, and few are expected. With large trucks (100-ton-capacity and over), however, the situation is different. Here, with an individual truck costing several hundred thousand dollars, there is an ever in- creasing trend to engineer a truck for a specific application. The body will be designed and sized for the material that the truck will carry; the engine and transmission will be geared to the haul profile, and tires will be designed to suit road conditions and work requirements. Early Truck Development Haulage trucks designed expressly for open-pit mine service were introduced during the 1930's. The first models to arrive on the scene hauled about 15 tons, and easily outperformed the modified highway trucks that had been used for mine haulage up to that time.

In the selective flocculation process, polymers with specific functional groups can yield highly selective adsorption and, therefore, high separation efficiency. Selectivity in polymer adsorption may also be attained by specific additives that inhibit the adsorption of the flocculant on some solid surfaces but not on others. Generally, these additives have a different chemical nature than the flocculant. In this study, the lower molecular weight fraction of the flocculant was successfully evaluated as a site blocking agent, leading to higher separation efficiency than obtained otherwise.

When two pieces of heavy equipment interact, jolting and jarring can occur. During haulage truck loading for example, there is a chance that the operator of one or both pieces of the equipment will experience jolting and jarring. Additionally, a jolt can occur when an off highway equipment operator drives over a road defect or inadvertently strikes a berm. Aside from the operators, there is seldom anyone else that witnesses the interaction and can accurately describe the extent of the jolting. This makes it difficult for health and safety managers to address jolting and jarring. The devices and software described in this paper constitute a method for installing “black boxes” called Shox Boxes onboard equipment that already have a GPS system onboard. The resulting configuration provides an objective assessment of jolting and a chance to determine the root causes of it. The Shox Box system reviews data in real time, onboard the vehicles, 24 hrs a day, and sends pertinent information via radio to a central database. The data generated shows whether jolts are above or below a supervisor defined target value for the equipment and the tasks being performed. This allows health and safety personnel to demonstrate safe operation of heavy equipment and recommend proactive actions to maintain jolting within a reasonable range.

This paper reviews lead as a commodity, starting with a brief historical outline and dealing with the various uses of lead in some detail. It then goes on to discuss some statistics in relation to the production and reserves of lead, before sketching its mode of occurence. The topics are approached in regard both to the world and to South Africa, with the emphasis on the later. The mining and concentration of lead at Black Mountain Mine at Aggeneys in the north-western Cape Province are detailed, before a general account is given of the smelting, hydrometalurgical extraction, and refining of lead, together with the processes used in these activities. The paper concludes with a discussion of safety and health in regard to lead and a brief look at the commodity's future.

The metalliferous areas of Manitoba have been described in more or less detail. Since the descriptions were written some new prospects have come to light and considerable mining development has taken place in two or three localities. No attempt will be made in this paper to give an account of recent activities or to describe the several areas in detail. In a general way, geological conditions are similar in all metalliferous areas of the province, a similarity that invites a discussion of the prospects as a whole, the features that are common to all deposits and the reasons for their uniformity. Modern theories of metallogenesis have a direct bearing on such a discussion and an effort will be made to show their application.

INTRODUCTION The increased activity in the Aus­tralian gold industry over the last decade has resulted in a concomitant increase in the use of sodium cyanide, with a projected consumption of 80,000 tonnes in 1991. Growing environmental awareness by government, industry and the public has generated increased interest in the fate of cyanide near gold mine tailings dams and has highlighted the lack of basic knowledge in the area, particularly for Australian conditions. In 1989 the Chemistry Centre (W.A,) commenced a' project, under the auspices of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association entitled "Fate of cyanide in the Enviroment Near Mine Tailings" to investigate some of the issues arising from the management of tailings containing cyanide, The project, which has been supported by thirteen companies has three broad aims:
