Hydrothermal mineral deposits are the dominant mineral deposit type in the Cullen Mineral Field, and have been important sources of tin, tungsten gold, silver-lead, zinc and copper. The deposits are mostly in north to northwest-trend- ing shear zones, and are confined to Early Proterozoic contact metamorphosed metasediments or synorogenic to postorogenic granitoids. The distribution of the vein-type deposits with- in the contact aureole defines a district-scale metal zonation of uranium closest to granitoid, through tungsten, copper, tin, silver-lead to gold with increasing distance from granitoid contacts. This zonation probably reflects de- creasing temperatures within the contact aureole during granitoid emplacement, and at the time of generation of a variety of metal-bearing fluids. A magmatic source for some of the metals is indicated by the positive spatial relationship between uranium, tungsten, copper and silver-lead deposits and granitoids abundant in those metals. There is little evidence for any such relation- ship for tin and gold deposits, except for an association of some tin deposits with tin-enriched mafic rocks. Most of the granitoids with anomalous metal values are late stage highly fractionated leuco- granitic phases forming younger plutons peripheral to the main body of the Cullen Batholith, They probably form cusps connected to the main body at shallow depths.

Native sulfur deposits in Poland occur in Upper Miocene strata on the northern (platform) border of the Carpathian foredeep. Systematic exploration since 1953 has resulted in the discovery of seven stratifom-stratibound sulfur-bearing limestone deposits that together contain about 0.6 billion tons of demonstrated sulfur reserves and about 0.5 billion tons of inferred and hypothetical resources. One open pit and three Frasch mines are currently in operation; another is under construction and one has been abandoned. Total production is about five million tons per year from ore containing on the average about 25% sulfur. Field, isotope, and micropaleontological data indicate that the sulfur-bearing limestone was formed through the bacterial reduction of gypsum in the presence of methane discharged from source beds and traps in the Carpathian foredeep. Subsequent recrystallization of the sulfur-bearing limestone, tectonic activity, jointing, karstification, and partial leaching of the sulfur has transformed the sulfur deposits and has altered the thickness and content of the sulfur-bearing strata, and their porosity and permeability, affecting the productivity and water consumption of the sulfur wells. Caputerized borehole logging techniques and geostatistical reserve estimates are used in mine planning. Great environmental impact constrains the development of sulfur mines.

One of the principal activities of the Bureau of Mines connected with the recent war was to help to increase the supply of strategic and critical minerals. Fluorite was one of the most critical of the nonmetallic minerals because of the increased demand for it as a flux in basic open-hearth and electric steel furnaces and as a raw material for the production of artificial cryolite used in the aluminum industry. Wartime developments in the technology of hydrofluoric acid, such as the use of the anhydrous acid as a catalyst in production of high-octane gasoline and the use of organic fluorides as carriers for insecticides, also increased the demand for acid-grade fluorite.f In 1943 the consumption of acid-grade fluorite was advancing at a more rapid rate than production, and was only slightly less than production during the latter half of the year.' The outlook for the postwar market for fluorite is encouraging. Steel production is expected to remain high until the domestic demand for commodities not manufactured during the war is satisfied. The uses for hydrofluoric acid are expected to increase under the impetus of war-initiated research. In considerbtion of these and other factors some authorities predict a postwar demand for fluorite equal to about 60 to 75 per cent of the wartime production.1,2 Others believe that the postwar fluorite industry will be permanently expanded over its prewar status.3 Acknowledgment This paper is one of many reporting on various aspects of the Bureau of Mines program directed toward the more effective utilization of our mineral resources. A mathematical analysis based on equilibrium modeling has been developed to describe the distribution behavior of minor elements such as Pb, Zn, Bi, Sb, and As among gas, slag and recovered copper phases during the reduction of copper oxide in slag cleaning with CO gas. The results show that large fractions of the impurities transferred to slag during smelting or converting are recycled to the recovered copper metal. It is also shown that there is a limit to the recovery of copper from slag because iron oxides are also reduced to form a copper-iron alloy at low oxygen potentials. The effects of various operating parameters such as temperature, the activity of FeO, the initial amounts of the elements in the slag and CO content in process gas, on the behavior of these minor elements are discussed. The predicted results were compared with the results of a pilot plant operation in which pulverized coal was used as a reductant. Consistent trends between the two cases were obtained.

In August 1943 the Bureau of Mines began an investigation of the West Portal magnetite mines, which comprise the Swayze and Turkey Hill properties. The work included (1) traversing with a dip needle to record magnetic anomalies, (2) diamond drilling, and (3) sampling old mine dumps; it was completed in April 1944. The deposit consists of two parallel veins, which strike northeast and dip southeast. They carry magnetite in gneiss and schist. The Swayze mine was discovered in 1867 and closed in 1889, while the Turkey Hill mine was opened in 1872 and closed in 1887. The dip-needle survey covered 266 acres. The diamond drilling comprised 11 holes totaling 4,910 feet from which 142 samples were taken for chemical analyses. Old mine dumps were sampled at 52 points for chemical and magnetic analyses.

THE system molten copper-oxygen-sulphur is of interest from both the practical and theoretical standpoints; practically, because oxygen and sulphur play an important role in the commercial production of copper, and theoretically because it offers a chance to study the reaction between an oxide gas, SO2, and a molten metal. Reactions of this type, such as that between CO or CO2 and molten iron, are important in many metallurgical operations. Again, the determination of any gas-metal equilibrium is of theoretical interest and value insofar as it contributes to the general development of the laws for solution of gases in metals. This problem is being given an increasing amount of attention in modern metallurgy. This paper is the first of a series and presents the results of a determination of the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper at temperatures from 1100° to 1500°C., and pressures from about 20 mm. of mercury to somewhat above atmospheric. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK The solubility of gases in most liquids has been found to obey Henry's law, which states that for a fixed temperature the amount of gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure. However this law does not hold for liquid metals. Instead, it appears that for many gases, particularly the simple diatomic ones such as 02, N2 and H2, the amount dissolved in liquid metals is directly proportional to the square root of the pressure. This is known as Sieverts' law. It may be recognized as a special case of Henry's law, which applies when the solute gas is dissociated into atoms or when it reacts with the solvent metal to form solute molecules containing single atoms of the gaseous elements, as, for example: [(MG) l 2M +G2 = 2MG K = Ma X Pa, [I]] which, if the solubility is not too high and the concentration of metal therefore nearly constant, can be simplified to: [MG = Kl Pa,[2]] Following the same reasoning, it would be expected that the solubility of SO2 in copper would be proportional to the cube root of the pressure, the reaction being as follows: [6Cu + SO2 = Cu2S + 2Cu20[3] K _ Cu2S X (Cu20)2 (Cu)6(Pso2)[4]] or, neglecting the change in metal concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume V of gas absorbed: [8 =KI = Pte, or VSO2= K2 '~/PeO, [S]]

Hecla Mining Company and NIOSH cooperated in a study to document the safety of rock support supplied by reinforced cemented paste backfill at the Lucky Friday Mine. Data are presented on backfill modulus values from laboratory tests and compared with modulus values from in-mine wall closure on the backfill. It is theorized that a compressive zone is created in the backfill between the upper and lower bearing plates on the reinforcing bolts, and that the backfill remains stable as long as the compressive zones from adjacent bolts overlap.

This Bureau of Mines report presents information on the origin, collection, movement, and consumption of iron and steel scrap in California and Nevada. As far as practicable, information is presented on a grade basis. The iron and steel scrap industry in California is important from the standpoint of employment, economic essentiality, and dollar value. About 16,000 persons are either directly or indirectly employed on a full- or part- time basis in the collection, preparation, and sale of iron and steel scrap in California; in 1957 about 70 percent of the tonnage of products of California steel mills, valued at $271 million, was derived from scrap; the value of scrap in 1957 ($117 million) is about $10 million greater than the value of portland cement produced in California that year. The iron and steel scrap industry in Nevada is small.

Some years ago the writer was struck by what might be called the remarkable vitality of the Virginia furnaces during the panic of 1893; and attention was called to the fact in the American Manufacturer of February 8,1895. From the second half of 1892, which was a period of maximum output, to the second half of 1893, when the full effects of the depression had been reached, the output of pig-iron had fallen off in Illinois 85; in New York, 66; in Ohio, 51; in Tennessee, 44; in Pennsylvania, 28; and in Virginia only 15 per cent. It seemed a reasonable inference that the State which had thus shown its marked ability to meet hard times could make and market its product with a larger margin of profit than any of the other States. This was true at that time, and to a certain extent the reasoning still holds good; but my mistake was in not fully realizing the marked effect of the Mesabi development, combined with reduced economies in transportation, and the consequent advantage to those furnaces which were so situated as to utilize these new commercial factors. The effect of these factors is seen in comparing the second half of 1894 with the second half of 1892. New York had dropped off 44, Alabama 23, Tennessee 21, Illinois 19, and Virginia 16 per cent., while Pennsylvania had increased 5 and Ohio 10 per cent. While there is no question of the great economy which has been made possible for certain interests which are peculiarly situated with reference to the ores of the Northwest, it is yet too early to say what furnaces not so fortunate will have to pay for their raw material. Already an increase of twenty cents per ton of ore has been announced, based upon increased cost of production.

The secondary dispersion of copper, zinc and fluorine in A horizon soils was examined in Pope and Hardin Counties, IL, by sampling 122 sites along five traverses. Four of the traverses were taken above a deeply buried manto; a fifth intersected a vein complex exposed at the bedrock surface. Plants at each site were examined and analyzed for fluorine and on one traverse for copper and zinc. The A horizon soils were also tested for lead, manganese, barium, nickel and cobalt. The total content of copper, zinc, and other heavy metals in soils was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) after acid bomb dissolution. Fluorine in soils was determined by fluoride ion-specific electrode after fusion with NaOH. Several cold- leach methods were also used. The analysis of A horizon soils for copper and zinc by AAS after acid bomb dissolution is a promising geochemical tool in the search for fluorspar. The acid bomb dissolution method is simple and takes little laboratoy time; it Produces a total dissolution of the sample with relatively little loss of the elements, and 20 elements can be analyzed from the same sample. In this study, the highest copper values were 80 times the local background level of 25 ppm and anomalies of this element tended to outline the fluorspar orebody better than either zinc or fluorine. The greatest zinc value was 15 times the local background level of 100 ppm, while the highest fluorine values were approximately four times the local background level of 165ppm.

Conventional flotation machines are typically limited to a particle topsize of 150-200 microns due to inherent constraints created by the pulp and froth phases. To overcome these limitations, a novel fluidized-bed flotation system called the HydroFloatTM Separator has been developed specifically for the purpose of floating coarse particles containing only small amounts of exposed hydrophobic minerals. Over the last decade, this technology has been successfully applied to industrial minerals with several full-scale units installed to recover particles up to and exceeding 3,000 microns diameter. More recently, sulfidebased test work has shown that this novel device is also capable of recovering metalliferous values at a grind size that is much coarser than currently used in industrial concentrators. In the current study, high resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) was used to experimentally compare the degree of exposed grain surface area necessary to recover coarse particles using the HydroFloatTM technology to that attainable using a traditional mechanical flotation cell. The data indicate that exposed grain surface area is a critical factor for coarse particle flotation. For the gold-bearing sulfide ore examined in this study, the HRXMT data suggest that near complete recoveries of coarse (850x500 µm) multiphase particles containing as little as 1% exposed grain surface area were realistically attainable using the HydroFloatTM technology. As such, this new technology may offer a unique opportunity for increasing concentrator capacity by increasing the primary grind size needed for rougher/scavenger separations.

Fracture Control Blasting is an alternative to pre- and post-splitting or smooth wall blasting. It was developed at the University of Maryland as an attempt to overcome some of the disadvantages that occur with normal blasting practices. There are two main factors that are unique to fracture control blasting. First, it utilizes a notched or grooved borehole to initiate fractures at desired locations and secondly, it employs a very carefully selected charge so as to provide control over borehole pressure. The maximum borehole pressure must be kept between very definite limits in order to obtain initiation of fractures at locations where they are desired and yet not obtain fractures where they are not desired. When coupled with stem induced fracturing, which was developed for oil and gas well stimulation, it has been found that the charge required for fracture control can be as little as 1/40th that required for normal smooth wall blasting. The paper describes the technique of fracture control blasting and gives results of some of the field testing conducted to date.

O espessamento de lamas no processo de beneficiamento de minério de ferro é de fundamental importância para a recuperação de água de processo, pois 75% da água é recuperada nesta etapa. Além disso, a qualidade da mesma interfere diretamente no bom desempenho das demais etapas do processo, principalmente na etapa de flotação. Vários são os parâmetros que interferem para obtenção da clarificação ideal do overflow, como: pH, dosagem de coagulantes e floculantes, percentagem de sólidos na alimentação, etc. O pH pode ser considerado o mais importante, pois a partir dele é que se determina as dosagens de coagulante e floculante referentes ao ponto ótimo de coagulação reduzindo assim os efeitos negativos na etapa de flotação. O teste de sedimentação em proveta é uma forma simples e rápida de realizar uma análise da velocidade de sedimentação e clarificação da água frente a diferentes combinações dos parâmetros citados. A Samarco resgatou e implementou na rotina dos operadores da área de espessamento a realização de testes de sedimentação em proveta com o objetivo de reduzir o tempo decorrente de coleta de material, envio ao laboratório e espera pelos resultados. Após a implementação dos testes na rotina operacional, observou-se motivação da equipe em redução de custos, embasamento teórico e assertividade na tomada de ações, diminuição de incidência de eventos de má clarificação da água overflow e diminuição do consumo de floculante em cerca de 30%.

Copper oxide deposits that may be considered for in situ leaching exist in unique geologic settings, different from uranium deposits. A large number of interrelated factors must be considered in wellfield design. Many of these factors are hard to quantify and are directly related to geologic features of the orebody. This paper discusses some of the important factors in wellfield design and suggests an outline for a design procedure.

High gradient magnetic separation, first introduced in 1968 as a means for the removal of very fine magnetic contaminants from clay, is no longer a new technology. Applications to a number of solid-solid and solid-fluid separation problems are now being exploited. Recent pilot tests and full-scale industrial installations of high gradient magnetic separators and filters have established their commercial viability and have demonstrated their superiority both in efficiency and cost effectiveness to conventional prior-art methods for water treatment and mineral processing. In high gradient magnetic separators, the magnetic trapping force for fine, even weakly magnetic particles is greatly increased over those available in previous magnetic separators. These very strong trapping forces are created on the edges of fine filamentary ferro- magnetic materials in the presence of a strong background magnetic field. In the basic cyclic high gradient magnetic separator, particles are trapped in the filamentary matrix until it is loaded, at which point the magnetic field is turned off, and the filter is back- flushed. Applications of cyclic high gradient magnetic filtration for water treatment include filtration of waste and process waters in steel mills. Treatment of hot rolling mill scale pit effluent and cold rolling mill emulsion has been successfully tested, and 2-meter diameter SALA-HGMF® magnetic filters have been installed at Japanese steel companies for the treatment of recirculating scrubber waters in a de-gas- sing system. El proyecto Gold Mill ha permitido a la Minera Yanacocha SRL incorporar durante la vida del proyecto un porcentaje del mineral oxidado y transicional. En este proceso, la composición de la solución rica generada en el circuito de lixiviación del Gol Mill ha causado alteraciones en la planta de adsorción con carbón activado CIC LQ por las concentraciones altas de plata y cobre en solución. En este sentido, para contrarrestar estos efectos negativos se incorporó al circuito el proceso SART (Sulfidization, Acidification, Recycle and Thickening). Por ello, el presente trabajo señala el proceso del SART y su influencia en el proceso de la minera Yanacocha, donde se busca remover los valores metálicos que puedan impactar en la planta de adsorción de oro con carbón activado y así recuperar eficientemente cianuro producto de la disociación del cianuro WAD presente en la solución rica de cianuración que ingresa a la planta SART.
