Approximate figures for petroleum production in Argentina for 1929 show an increase of only about 300,000 bbl. over production for 1928. This increase is due to greater yield in the Plaza Huincul and in the Salta regions. Table 1 shows the distribution of production in the various fields of the whole country, using estimates for the later months of the year. The outlook for production remains about the same as in 1928. It is believed that in northern Argentina there are regions that contain oil, but they are yet unexplored. Notable traces of oil at depths between 1280 and 1390 m. have appeared in a 1500-m. boring in Comodoro Rivadavia, but their importance is unknown.

Data given in this paper indicate that certain relations exist between different characteristics of sandstone. These relations are not rigid, for all sandstones are more or less heterogeneous. Not every increment of a given horizon follows exactly the relationship; however, studying a reservoir as a whole from a large number of samples, definite trends are found to exist. Apparently nature's processes of sedimentation and diagenesis are such as to give some degree of uniformity. Average relationships are valuable because electrical measurements in a borehole comprise a considerable volume of rock near the hole. Also, it is desirable that a given producing reservoir be studied as a unit. In a permeable reservoir whose pores are filled with a saline solution, it was found that the total porosity and the type of sandstone influence the relationship between its electrical resistivity and the RO and the resistivity of the brine R,. The relation can be expressed by the following empirical equation, Ro = R10O— [i] where 0 is the porosity expressed as a fraction and the numerical value of the exponent lies between 1.8 to 2.0 for consolidated sandstones, and is about 1.3 for clean, unconsolidated packs. This equation indicates that an appropriate electrical log can be used to estimate the porosity of a saline water-bearing reservoir when Rw and the type of rock are known. The fraction R0rw, is called the "formation resistivity factor." It reflects the effect of the nonconducting rock structure on the resistivity of the salt water that fills the tortuous paths through which the electricity must pass. The formation resistivity factor F is found to be related to permeability k. In this case the type of rock plays an important role, as shown by the relation F = ak-b [2] where the values of a and b must be determined experimentally for each horizon. Therefore Eq. I rather than Eq. 2 is used when it is desired to determine the value of F, because small changes in rock structure particularly in the pore size are not critical. Another useful relation, R = R0S- [3] where R = resistivity of rock when partially saturated with brine and partly with oil or gas, S = fraction of the pore space filled with brine, and n equals approximately 2 for both unconsolidated and consolidated sandstone, shows that the connate water of an oil or gas reservoir can be estimated in situ from a resistivity log. Equation 3 shows that in order to estimate the water content of a reservoir a knowledge of R and Ro is essential. The first value can be obtained from the electrical log when all factors influencing the resistivity curve can be properly taken into account. Geochemistry in all its branches is playing G an increasingly important part in the business of mine finding. Although geochemical studies were commenced more than 50 years ago, interest in this subject did not become widespread until the late 1930's when in Scandinavia and the U.S.S.R. a whole series of investigations were initiated. Unfortunately for those in North America, the results of these investigations have only recently become available. In Canada and the U.S. geochemistry as a serious mine finding tool dates back only to the period following World War II. This article deals primarily with soils, which have found widespread acceptance as a useful tool in geochemical prospecting. Actually soils vary greatly in texture, structure, profile, and mineral background. Soil sampling poses no hardship for normal intellects, but it does assume an elementary knowledge of soil science and of the chemical problems involved in determining the absolute and relative amounts of a particular element in any particular soil.

Pressure hydrometallurgy is becoming an increasingly common unit operation in the treatment of gold and base metal ores and concentrates. The design of an adequate and appropriate pilot-scale testwork program is, therefore, essential in order to minimise the risks associated with developing a project in which autoclaves form a key part of the operation. This paper identifies the approaches that have been taken in the piloting of oxidative and pressure acid leach operations. Particular emphasis is placed on the determination of scale-up ratios between the pilot and commercial plants and the pilot-plant run durations. The issues, both metallurgical and project-specific, that can impact these key parameters are reviewed.

Increasing the strength of backfill has been the subject of much research. In the former Soviet Union most methods concentrated on the fill mixture including chemical additives, binder re-grinding, water electromagnetic activation and the use of vibration and turbulent activation. For the most part, this research has been confined to the laboratory where the results were not representative of field conditions. These methods also were directed at increasing the mass strength and were not specifically aimed at strengthening the fill where it may subsequently be exposed for instance on the side or underneath as it required for underhand cut and fill methods of mining. In the Republic of Armenia, a method of fill strengthening known as electro-activation has been adopted. The deposit it an epithermal gold deposit which to-date has been mined using underhand cut and fill with timber support. The backfill comprises cement and pumice placed in 2.5 m lifts. Central to the method of electro-activation is the placement of the electrodes in the stope in which the polarity and the electrical potential are changing during filling. The process promotes the binding of the fill layers, the bond to the side walls and to the adjacent fill. There is a significant increase in the compressive and tensile strength. The process has been used with beneficial effects on reinforced concrete and could be used in any mine utilising hardening fills.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, laboratory studies of concentration were conducted at the Salt Lake City station on a sample of ore from the Lake Valley mines of the Newalpitt Fluorspar Corp. of Deming, N. Mex. The ore was reported to be representative of the type that would be mined for mill feed. The sample tested was found to be amenable to beneficiation by ore-dressing methods for the production of products that, when sintered, assayed over 44 percent Mn.At the beginning of the investigation of manganese-ore beneficiation in December 1940, the only product marketable to Metals Reserve Company was ferrograde manganese grade B, the requirements for which follow: Mn, min., 48 percent; Fe, max., 7 percent; Si02, max., 10 percent; P, max., 0.18 percent; Al203, max., 6 percent; Zn, max., 1 percent, Al2O3,Later the specifications were modified gradually. As of May 15, 1943, manganese products were acceptable if they contained over 35 percent manganese and less than 3 percent zinc and 1 percent phosphorus. Prices were based upon material containing 48 percent manganese, 6.0 percent iron, and 11 percent silica plus alumina. Premiums were paid for manganese content in excess of 48 percent and iron content below 6 percent, penalties being imposed upon products containing less than 43 percent -manganese, or more than 6 percent iron, or more than 11 percent silica plus alumina. The specifications for commercial manganese further required that maximum particle size be 12 inches and that, 75 percent of the product be coarser than 20-mesh. Therefore, fine material such as table and flotation concentrates had to be nodulized or sintered. In addition, oarbcnate manganese ores were not acceptable unless calcined."

"Geology plays a critical role in many aspects of blasting, from fragmentation to wall control. One often overlooked component of blasting concerns blast results due to the effect of geologic features. The direction of blasting, with respect to strike and dip, can produce varied results, depending on thescenario. Working with geological features, as opposed to against them or without regard to them, can therefore dramatically improve blasting results. This paper focuses on the role of “geologic features”, which include joint-sets, natural fractures, and bedding planes (all of which are commonly referred to as “seams”) for the purposes of this paper. The goal of this paper is to promote understanding and mitigation techniques for various scenarios in which there are identifiable geologic features. Depending on the nature of these features (strike and dip specifically), blast design and pit advancement/development can be carefully considered to use make the best use of these features and optimize blast results."

There are many potential pitfalls in the commercialization of innovative technology. The failures often are remembered longer than the successes, thereby serving as deterrents to subsequent attempts. The mineral industry's future depends on effective innovation. So it is essential that the causes of failure are understood. Innovation can be examined equally well in the context of geophysics, geology or mining. However the author's experience has been in mineral processing and chemical engineering. So the following discussion is limited to processes and/or plants for producing mineral concentrates, metals or inorganic chemicals. More of what follows has to do with underachievement or failure than success. But this article demonstrates that there is a strong element of predictability in the former. Furthermore, it is a credit to the minerals industry and to the engineering profession that a very high percentage of projects succeed in achieving design capacity and forecast operating costs. Innovation means the introduction of something new. In this article, the words "innovative technology" are used broadly. They include new processes and novel combinations of established unit operations, as well as novel types of processing equipment or largest-ever equipment models. The discussion of project outcomes is based on personal experience or on published information. Citations are given for technical publications that provide either project information or insights into the methodology used to analyze project performance. However, specific projects have not been identified due to the rather negative connotations of some of the conclusions drawn about the less favorable outcomes.

ThE present paper proposes a mechanism of dislocation multiplication at internal inclusions or cavities and presents experimental evidence of such sources in zinc. Using an etching technique recently described by Damiano, Tint, and Herman1 to study the three-dimensional aspects of dislocations in bulk zinc crystals, an investigation was made of helically shaped and closed-loop etch patterns found to be associated with inclusions. Crystals containing 0.1 pet Cd and grown from the melt were deformed slightly by bending and then aged at room temperature to precipitate cadmium at the dislocations. The crystals were cleaved along the (0001) plane and then etched with Gilman's2 etch. Crystals were continuously viewed on the (0001) plane while the etching was in progress and numerous helical and closed-loops etch patterns were continuously recorded as shown in the sequences printed directly from the cine film in Fig. l(a) and (6). These etch patterns are not to be confused with the etch patterns previously reported by Damiano and Herman3 which revealed dissolution spirals on the (0001) plane of high-purity zinc crystals. In the present case, precipitates arranged in the form of closed loops or helicies are progressively uncovered by etching after suitable aging of cadmium doped zinc crystals. Viewed with dark-field illumination as shown in Fig. 2, portions of a helical figure and subboundaries were revealed simultaneously. Continuous viewing while the etching was in progress revealed in Fig. 1(b) that the short line segments observed on single photomicrographs were in fact continuous and described a helix which had its terminus at an inclusion. A computer model was used to simulate the effect of leakage through confining beds on a hypothetical in situ leach operation in an aquifer with a thin mineralized section. The simulations were used to assess economic and potential environmental implications of leakage on an in situ leach operation. Four scenarios were modeled - three representing cases with different degrees of confinement, and the fourth representing a stratified ore zone under a low degree of confinement. The model simulated the travel path and travel time of lixiviant given the hydraulic conditions prescribed in each scenario. The results show that the travel path and travel times vary by about 10% for confinement ranging from nearly impermeable (essentially no leakage) to an extremely low level (thin confinement with a permeability about equal to that of the aquifer) for isotropic aquifer conditions. The aquifer thickness contacted by the lixiviant varied from 85% to 90%. Horizontally, 55% to 60% of the aquifer was contacted. The flow paths in the stratified aquifer were reduced in the vertical direction and expanded horizontally. Forty- five percent of the aquifer thickness was contacted vertically with 88% contacted horizontally. Break- through time for lixiviant traveling at mid-depth of the aquifer increased two times when the leakage was increased from nearly zero to a value representative of thin and highly permeable confinement. Leakage affects the economics of in situ mining by (1) increasing the time required to leach out the ore, and (2) increasing the thickness of the ore zone aquifer to be restored. The potential for environmental impacts appears to be minor. In all four simulations, the lixiviant did not contact the confining strata. Restoration would be limited to cleanup of the ore zone aquifer within the thickness contacted by lixiviant and within the radius of the lixiviant that traveled farthest away from the production cell.

Xanthates and dithiophosphates are the most commonly used collectors in the flotation of sulfide minerals. Other reagents such as thionocarbamates, mercaptobenzothiazoles (MBT), mercaptans and xanthogen formates occupy niche positions in industrial collector use. Over the last ten years there has been much activity by chemical companies to develop new collector compositions. The new collectors are aimed at meeting specific process needs such as recovering an increment of valuable metals, improved sulfide separations, increased flotation kinetics, and reducing reagents costs. A review of the patent literature shows that American Cyanamid (Cytec), Dow Chemical, Phillips Petroleum, Sentrachem Ltd., Henkel, Montan Chemicals and Elf Aquitaine, among others, have been active in sulfide collector research. Several companies have achieved considerable success in laboratory and plant tests of the new collectors; however, commercial acceptance for plant usage has been slow. Those most advanced have been plant tested extensively and some are in day-to-day use. The new collector types in this category are: Modified thionocarbamates, dithiophosphinates, organic sulfides, trithiocarbonates, monothiophosphates, and modified thioureas. Others such as substituted mercaptobenzothiazoles and monothiophosphinates have been tested in the laboratory. The chemistry of collectors developed in the last 10 years, their preparation, physical properties and their potential for commercial use are reviewed in this paper.

Copper, particularly the oxygen-free grade Cu-OFP, is a candidate material for containers for the long-term isolation and disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) in underground repositories. After having been buried for a few hundred years, all oxygen will have been consumed in the repository, and corrosion of the copper will be caused entirely by contact with dissolved sulfides. Chloride is another potential corrodant, but in deep repositories where groundwater is neutral or slightly alkaline, the effect of chlorides can be ignored on thermodynamic grounds. Thus, the corrosion of copper in the presence of sulfide ion and under reducing conditions has been studied using cyclic voltammetry and Tafel slope measurements. It is possible to determine the effect of sulphide ion on copper corrosion resistance which is minimized at low temperature and also at low sulphide concentration. The presence of anions such as HCO3 under environmental conditions produces a beneficial effect because these ions are inhibitors.

DURING the summer of 1875 I visited some of the iron mines of Houghton County, Mich., and was quite interested to observe the progress made there within a. few years. Working in open pits is gradually giving place to underground work in most of the mines where this system is practicable. In some cases, as in the Lake Superior Mine, the body of ore is so irregular, and the deposit so liable at any time to be pinched out, or nearly so, that it has been found impractical, if not impossible, to lay out any plan for systematic underground work. But in many other mines the deposit is so regular in character, that the work can be laid out in shafts at regu¬lar intervals, and a series of 60 feet levels. The Michigammi Mine, opened in 1872, and first worked in 1873, is arranged on this plan, though some quarrying is still done. But the men are being put at overhead stoping as fast as it can be got ready for them, and before long it will all be worked in this way. The New York Mine is undergoing a similar change to the pillar system, and several others have either been changed, or it is about to be done. My principal object in visiting this region was to obtain samples from some of the important mines, so as to be able to answer the question : "What is the average percentage of iron in the Lake Superior ores?" Most iron furnaces work on mixtures of ore, so that it is impossible to tell, from their records, just the percentage in each one.

A thermodynamic model for determining the surface tension of molten slag by considering the surface tension and molar volume of the pure oxide component, and their ionic radii was extended to the slag bearing high TiO2 (varying from 80 to 67%) at 1973 K. The iso-surface tension curves for the FeO-TiO2-Ti2O3 ternary system at 1973 K are almost parallel to the FeOTi2O3 line. TiO2 plays a role of surface-active solute, and its surface-active effect is attenuating with increasing the TiO2 content. The iso-surface tension curve shifts away from the TiO2 corner, indicating that the surface tension of the ternary slag decreases along with the addition of SiO2. The reasons include the addition of SiO2 with lower surface tension and the decrease of the total ion moment at the surface. Both CaO and MgO can bring about that the iso-surface tension curve shifts towards the TiO2 corner, indicating that the surface tension of the ternary slag increases along with the addition of CaO or MgO. CaO has a more pronounced effect on increasing the surface tension of the ternary slag than MgO at an equimolar amount addition. The increase of the surface tension results from both the compositional change and the variation of the slag structure.

THE Missouri fire clays are here divided into plastic and semiplastic clays occurring as widespread bedded deposits in east central Missouri and flint and diaspore clays occurring as isolated "sink-hole" deposits in the north central Ozark region. Visual inspection was the first method used in clay prospecting. Thin overburden, hard sandstone "rimrocks," and the occurrence of diaspore float made this method particularly applicable in the flint and diaspore fields. The first drilling tool used was a hand auger. One man can drill 25 to 50 ft. per day at a cost of about 35 cents per foot. Holes can be drilled to a depth of 150 feet. Spud drills are often used where the over burden is hard. This drill uses a slotted earth socket bit. A two-man crew can drill about 100 ft. per day at a cost of about 35 cents per foot. Mechanically powered auger drills have been used extensively in wildcat drilling in the past few years. This type of drill furnishes a continuous set of cuttings. The practical depth limit with this drill is 50 to 60 ft. Two men can drill 300 ft. per day at a cost of about 20 cents per foot. Core drilling is used mainly to prove a known clay deposit. A two-man crew with a No. 22 Sullivan drill can drill about 30 to 40 ft. per day in soft clay, at a cost of about $1.25 per foot.

Strata bolting/dowelling reinforcement techniques are being reintroduced into the mines of the National Coal Board. There are strong reasons for the selection of the full hole anchorage principle of bolting and for the development of the wood/resin dowel. There are strong reasons also for the measurement of strata bed separation as the method of assessing the effectiveness of a roof bolting system. There are several designs of bolts. Instruments have been developed for investigation and control purposes. Different drilling and bolting machines have been employed in trial sites. In addition comparative laboratory model work has been conducted on simple non-bolted and bolted systems.
