"The creation of mine excavations alters the stress distribution in the surrounding rock mass. In modern mining, resin-grouted rockbolts are used as a means of support in order to redistribute stresses and reestablish equilibrium in the rock mass. The success of resin-grouted rockbolting depends on the design of the system and the correct installation of the support units.The support design and rockbolt installation procedure at a platinum mine in the Bushveld Complex were investigated. A number of issues that resulted in poor installation were identified, including resin admixture, incorrect length and orientation of support holes, over- or under-spinning of the resin, and incorrect rockbolt tensioning. The support design used at the mine was reviewed and its limitations identified. A number of recommendations were made for optimizing the support design by reducing the diameter of the drill bit and reducing the length of the support holes. These changes will enable the mine to use different combinations of resin capsules. Implementation of the proposed changes will lead to a significant reduction in the cost of installation per support hole, as well as improve productivity and safety.IntroductionThe creation of any mine excavation disturbs the virgin state of stress in the Earth’s crust. This results in stress concentrations that interfere with the stability of the rock mass surrounding the excavation. It is essential to modify the internal behaviour of the rock mass surrounding excavations in order to reinforce the ground and stabilize excavations. Resin-grouted rockbolts are extensively used for this purpose. Esterhuizen (2014) stated that when effectively installed, the rockbolt exerts a clamping force and a bonding strength that keeps the rock mass together. This increases the cohesive strength of all discontinuities in the rock mass and enhances the stability of the excavation. Poorly designed and installed ground support is ineffective and constitutes a safety hazard. It is therefore crucial for every mine to ensure that any form of ground support is designed and installed correctly. This research evaluates the installation of resign-grouted rockbolts and identifies challenges and solutions for improved safety as observed at an operating hard rock mine. The support design used at the mine was reviewed and the design parameters optimized. The outcomes will enhance the efficiency of support and minimize the costs associated with the installation of resingrouted rockbolts."

The Zistersdorf field, near Vienna, continues to be Austria's only producing area. During the year the field was slightly extended by Rohol Gewinnungs A.G. in its Rag 2, which in April came in for an initial 120 tons daily through an 8-mm. (0.315-in.) bean, from the twelfth Sarmat sand at 1447 m. (4747 ft.). The amount of fluid produced by this well has remained essentially constant, but after the first several months water appeared and increased to some 50 per cent of the total. TWO subsequent extension wells, Rag 3 and Rag 5, northeast and west of Rag 2, found only water-bearing sands, and drilled through the main fault and into the Flysch at 1683 and 1401 m. (5522 and 4596 ft.), respectively. At the close of the year preparations were under way to deviate both wells away from the fault to test still deeper sands. Within the previously proven area of the field Erdolproduction's Gosting VII came in flowing a maximum of 440 tons daily, the highest individual production yet recorded. In a special type of electrodiffusion experiment the entire specimen is at constant temperature. The vacancies are then created at one end of the specimen and flow to the other end where they are destroyed. The energy required to operate the corresponding sources and sinks results in a super saturation of vacancies at one end of the specimen and an under -saturation at the other end. This gradient in vacancy concentration produces a chemical-diffusion flux, J(D), of vacancies in addition to the flux, J(E), caused by the electric current. Using the experimental data of Ch. Herzig,5 it is shown that a super saturation of 1 pct can cause J(D) to be about 25 pct of J(E), and thus account for the anomalous behavior of short specimens. THERE are advantages in a phenomenological treatment as contrasted to an atomistic one. For example, there are many reactions involving the element copper that are quantitatively and usefully understood from a phenomenological viewpoint, even though electron theory is not yet able to predict whether copper should be fcc or cph.' Similarly, the lack of a complete atomic theory of vacancies need not prevent the development of a treatment based on thermodynamics and chemical kinetics. In the following discussion, models will be used for the vacancies and for the mechanisms by which they move or are created or destroyed, but the phenomenological treatments are not dependent on the details of these models. The important product of a phenomenological analysis is an equation that describes the relation among the measurable quantities determining the behavior of the system. Based on such an equation, experiments can be performed to study these quantities in detail. Eventually atomic theory will supply an adequate theoretical base for the phenomena in question. A chemical species whose chemical potential was invariant during reactions in binary and ternary systems of varying composition would indeed be an anomaly. Yet this is the role that has frequently been assigned to the vacancies in pure metals, in dilute solutions, and even in ordinary alloys. The weight of available evidence supports the view that supersatu-rations of vacancies are on the order of 1 pct in usual diffusion processes.' Although it may seem strange that such a small deviation from equilibrium could significantly affect the thermodynamic properties of the vacancies, it is well known that the driving force for an ordinary chemical reaction is the departure of the components from their equilibrium state. Similarly, the reaction of vacancies that results in the formation of pores in various types of diffusion3 can reasonably be attributed to the supersaturation of vacancies. In the present paper, it will be shown that small degrees of supersaturation can significantly affect the kinetics of the diffusion process itself. ISOTHERMAL ELECTRODIFFUSION Two different experimental techniques are convenient for studying the behavior of vacancies in a pure metal in the presence of an electric field. Gilder and Lazarus4 studied self-electrodiffusion in a gold specimen in which only the central portion was at high temperatures. In this case the significant vacancy sources operate inside the specimen in the presence of a temperature gradient. In the laboratory of Th. Heumann a method has been devised for studying self-electrodiffusion at constant temperature.5 In principle, there is then no effect of thermodiffusion. During late 1953 and early 1954, tests were carried out in Sydney metropolitan brickpits in order to determine if some improvement might not be effected in the personal shock, fly rock and possible ground displacement accompanying daily blasting occurrences in the numerous quarrying activities of the metropolitan area. As a result of this preliminary work (Reid, 1954), the Department of Mines decided to further investigate the problem with a view to placing this type of blasting on a sound economical and safe basis for both operator and nearby residents alike. To assist in the work, a Cambridge Universal vibrograph was acquired.Human safety was the first consideration followed by property damage to homes and factories in the extractive areas. Although most of the actual field work has been confined to the Sydney metropolitan area and in particular to the large clay-shale quarries, many cities and country towns have blasting problems associated with the extractive industries, engineering projects both above and below ground level, and in building excavations to which the results may apply.The following figures illustrate how much activity of this type is located around cities and towns:Sydney Metropolitan Area:

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has initiated a study of a roof bolter to reduce noise exposure to mine roof bolter operators. An important segment of this research entails determining the affect of various drilling configurations on the performance (penetration rate) and sound power emissions when drilling into granite. Test conditions included various combinations of rotational speeds and thrusts; hex and round drill steels of one inch (1.) and one and three-eighths inch (1 3/8.) diameters; vacuum and wet conditions; and using drill media of differing compressive strengths. This paper will detail the affects of each of these on the performance and sound power level emission. When drilling into granite, it was found that wet drilling generated lower sound power levels and performed better than vacuum drilling.

Continued extraction of the No. 3 Seam at Elouera Colliery required the driveage of a sequence of roadways within an area of significantly elevated horizontal stress. Initial roof conditions varied from excellent to very severe as the panel entered the high stress area. The variation was attributed to the extraction sequence, with different roadways "leading" the panel into the high horizontal stressfield.This paper summarises field and analytical work designed to evaluate the use of stress control methods as an effective planning tool. The "leading" roadway of the panel would be required to remain stable whilst experiencing moderate to severe deformation whilst the neighbouring roadways (stress relieved) could be driven at more acceptable advance rates using less reinforcement.The planning implications of developing the panel with stress control methods are discussed.

Este trabalho propõe avaliar a atuação do polietileno tereftalato (PET) como um agregado substituto na fabricação de concreto para pavers, pavimento intertravado com peças de concreto, a fim de minimizar os efeitos colaterais da construção civil. PET triturado substituiu o agregado natural, pó de pedra, nas porcentagens de 10%, 15% e 20% em massa. Os testes mecânicos de resistência à compressão realizado aos 28 dias mostraram que os corpos de prova moldados a partir dos traços substituídos apresentaram significativa melhora da resistência à compressão, que a substituição parcial de 10% em massa de PET atende ao recomendado pela NBR 9781 (2013) para concreto para pavimentação e que todos os concretos produzidos atendem a resistência mínima a compressão de 20 MPa, recomendado pela NBR 6118 (2003) para concreto estrutural.

The wireline sampling originates from core drilling in rocks. The authors combined the wireline sampling technique with conventional undisturbed soil samplers, including Osterberg sampler, Denison sampler and double tube barrel, and then developed the wireline samplers of WPS, WSS and WSR models. These samplers are able to sample various soils. They reserve all the advantages of the original samplers, and moreover, they are noted with quick hoisting and lowering by wire rope. Therefore, it becomes an efficient new technique of sampling undisturbed soil from deep foundation.

The past fifteen years have seen a number of important developments in copper hydrometallurgy, including the commercial application of biological heap leaching of secondary (chalcocite-dominant) copper ores, the commercial demonstration of chalcopyrite concentrate leaching technology using pressure leaching and biological processes, and the application of novel configurations of solution extraction circuits. Significant emphasis is now being placed on the development of effective stockpile leaching practices for primary ores (chalcopyrite and bornite-dominant mineralization). Some of these developments have been highly successful, and will pave the way for further development and commercialization. Others have been less successful. These developments are reviewed in the context of the metal price cycle and trends for the future are identified.

Although significant phosphate mining activity has occurred in four western states-Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming-southeastern Idaho contains the largest, most easily mineable reserves, and mining has focused there. More than half of the western phosphate field's economic reserves are within a 32 x 96-km (20 x 60-mile) rectangle bounded by Montpelier, Idaho, on the south, Soda Springs on the west, and Grays Lake on the east. A large amount of this land lies within the boundaries of the Caribou National Forest.

Recent investigations of mine roof falls have demonstrated that roof failures are generally associated with geologic conditions. The roof falls can be predicted by using the techniques of depositional modeling for the coal bed and roof rocks, and by lineament analysis. The ability to predict potential roof failure areas will allow the engineer and mine planner to develop a mine plan to avoid the roof failure areas and thus reduce overall mining costs. The ability to avoid roof failure areas also will permit maximum recovery of the coal resources.

Controlled Source Audio Magnetotelluric (CSAMT) surveys were carried out by Glass Earth (New Zealand) Limited (Glass Earth) in 2006 - 2007 to investigate epithermal gold targets in the central North Island of New Zealand. The surveys were conducted using a Zonge GDP 32 8-channels receiver and a Zonge XMT 32 transmitter powered by a 16 KW generator. The electric field dipole was maintained at 20 m length (five dipoles per 100 m spread) and the frequency ranged from 4 KHz to 4 Hz. Only scalar (TM mode) signals were recorded, using one magnetic coil per spread. The transmitter bipoles were 1 - 4 km in length and located about 5 to 10 km from each survey area.   Sixteen individual target areas were surveyed by June 2007. The CSAMT survey lines (100 - 400 m spacing) were determined mainly on results from previous ultra-detailed airborne magnetic and gravity surveys conducted by Glass Earth in 2005. The data from each CSAMT line was carefully examined to remove any spurious signals and processed using Zonge SCS2D software, which can produce smooth 2D resistivity inversions of the field data. The results were presented as resistivity sections and maps to help the identification of exploratory drilling targets, mainly from the existence of subsurface high resistivity zones (resistors) that can be interpreted as caused by silicification associated with epithermal mineralization.   An example of processing and interpretation of the CSAMT data is presented in this paper on results from Glass EarthÆs Tahunaatara target, where CSAMT surveys have identified zones of epithermal mineralization confirmed by exploratory drilling.

Construction of a new ship dock at a major Philadelphia area refinery required geotechnical design and field consultation. The new dock, which consists of a system of mooring dolphins and platforms, will be capable of docking the Stena V-MAX Oil Tanker (V-MAX). The 1100 ft long V-MAX is currently the largest tanker to travel the Delaware River and will induce significant lateral loads on the new ship dock. Lateral loads induced on the dock will be resisted by over 200 pipe piles installed on a batter. The piles used for support of the dock included 20 and 30 in. diameter reinforced, concrete filled pipe piles. Complete construction of each pile included driving of the pile to the design ultimate capacity, flushing the pipe pile casing clean of overburden materials followed by drilling rock sockets into the underlying Wissahickon Formation. Variations in depth to bedrock, rock quality and degree of weathering and presence of very hard quartzite lenses created a complex geologic environment that presented challenges for the pile/rock socket design and installation. The design of the pile system, installation methods, QA/QC and testing (Pile Dynamic Analysis), as well as the challenges that were encountered through the duration of the project are presented and discussed.

A process was developed based on the thermal hydrolysis and precipitation of iron from solutions resulting from the leaching of zinc plant residue. A study was made of the hydrolysis of iron, at temperatures in the range 140-220°C, in both pure solutions of ferrie sulphate and in leach solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte.At 200°C hydrolysis of pure ferric sulphate solutions results in the precipitation of ferric oxide, Fe2O3, at low acid. concentrations, and a basic salt, Fe2O3.2S03.H20, at hIgher acid concentrations. At 180°C ferric oxide is precipitated at low acid concentrations, but at higher acidities. carphosiderite, 3Fe203.4SO.3.9H20, is the stable phase. Frequently a mIxture of ferric oxide and carphosldente IS produced at 180°C, the ratio of phases being dependent on the non-equilibrium experimental conditions.With solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte hydrolysIS at elevated temperatures results in the precipitation of jarosite compounds of the type NaFe3(S04)2(OH)6 The precipitation of natrojarosite jarosite, and ammonio-jarosite was studied in detail. Temperature, free acidity, and the concentration of sodium potassium, and ammonium ions are critical factors which affect the extent of precipitation.A process based on ammonio-jarosite precipitation was tested in a pilot plant.An alternative method of iron removal based on the addition of zinc oxide calcine, to neutralize excess acidity, and the precipitation of ferric oxide was also tested in the pilot plant. This article discusses the effect of physical and chemical modifications of starches on the anionic and cationic flotation of silica from oxidized iron ores and magnetite-taconite concentrates. It also deals with the results of the interaction of starch, pH, and calcium ions on the flocculation, clarification, and filtration of iron ore slimes and magnetite-taconite tailings. Starches, particularly when an-ionically modified, were found to be effective depressants in anionic silica flotation. British gums and dextrins were beneficial for oxidized iron ores, but none of the starches or starch derivatives appeared to have any effect on magnetite-taconite concentrates. The flocculation and filtration of iron ore slimes were affected most strongly by the level of starch, to a lesser degree by the pH, and virtually not at all by the level of calcium chloride. The clarification of iron ore slimes was complexly dependent on these three factors. The flocculation of magnetite-taconite tailings depended mainly on the level of starch, whereas their clarification depended on the level of lime. As previously reported in the literature, selective flocculation and partial upgrading of a semitaconite could be readily attained with starch and calcium chloride. A previous article discussed some of the parameters that are important when various corn starches are applied to the soap flotation of activated silica from iron ores and to the flocculation of iron ore slimes.' Methods of solubilizing the starches and the molecular size after mechanical and thermal treatments, as inferred from the viscosity measurements, were shown to influence the adsorption characteristics on iron ores, and the residual concentrations of both calcium ion and starch in the pulp liquor were in direct correlation with the flotation and flocculation behavior.2-4 The present article summarizes the results of more recent tests conducted to ascertain the role of starches and starch derivatives in various phases of iron ore beneficiation. The scope of this investigation has been extended to include not only anionic and cationic flotation, but also the flocculation and filtration of iron oxide slimes, the selective flocculation and partial upgrading of semitaconites, and the flocculation and clarification of magnetite-taconite tailings —all problems that are of vital importance to the iron ore industry of Minnesota. By combining a practical approach with adsorption studies and by using single-mineral systems5 in these research efforts, it is believed that the ultimate goal of developing a suitable modification of starch structure may be realized. The topics covered in this article are limited to the empirical aspects of the research program on the depressant activity of starches and products in the cationic and anionic flotation of silica and of their role in flocculation, water clarification and filtration. The North Texas district, as herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita, and Wil-barger. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, are usually modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. Excepting the fields in southeastern Baylor, southern Archer, and southwestern Clay Counties, all the fields within the district are on this Red River uplift. These exceptions, which have the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields, are on the extreme north end of the Bend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas to Archer County. The larger part of past oil and gas production has come from Pennsylvanian strata, with less important amounts from the Permian, and minor but increasingly important quantities from the Ordovician. Developments during 1940 The encouraging outcome of exploration and development in Montague and Cooke Counties and generally greater activity throughout the district resulted in the drilling of some 1700 wells during 1940, about 350 more wells than were drilled in 1939. Approximately 1250 of these tests were completed as oil wells. Production likewise increased during I940 to the extent of 8 million barrels more than the 25 1/2 million barrels produced in 1939. In spite of this large increase in production, known oil reserves again increased substantially. As is usually characteristic of this district, the new reserves were from a large number of fields, none of which were of such magnitude as to be important to the oil industry. Nevertheless, the Fargo field, Wilbarger County, deserves mention as one of the more important discoveries in this district during 1940. Following seismic surveys, the hmerada Petroleum Corporation located its No. I Goodpasture in sec. 35, block IS, H. and T. C. R. R. Co. survey, and drilled it to a total depth of 6717 ft. This well was completed in July 1940 through perforations in the casing from a pay between 3230 and 3252 ft. for an initial production of 241.5 bbl. on an 8-hr. pumping test. Other potential producing horizons were found in the Pennsyl-vanian at depths of 3960 to 3995 ft., 4208 to 11.234 ft., 4407 to 4422 ft., and in the Ordovician at 6300 ft. Wells completed to date in the several Pennsylvanian horizons have an average daily potential of 600 bbl. of oil. Although no wells have yet been completed in the Ellenburger dolomite (Ordovician), the discovery well swabbed I5 bbl. per hour from this formation before plugging back for completion in an upper horizon.
