The issues which are the subject of this paper cover an extremely broad field. In themselves the components of the topic could be the theme, in considerably greater detail, of a two day seminar. Indeed a full course in an academic year would probably not do justice to the topic. I have therefore experienced considerable difficulty in condensing such a broad subject range down to a 30 minutes address and in doing so have tried to, hopefully, provide a little bit of everything for the wide range of professional interests and different levels of commercial, professional and legal expertise represented at this conference. Perhaps my address could best be described as a "bird's eye" view rather than a "worm's eye" view of the subject.

The products from beneficiation present themselves at opposite ends of the spectrum, and yet numerous synergies exist in the preparation of coking coal and hematite iron ore products for their common export markets. Returning to the coal side of the business with Anglo Coal following a five-year sojourn in WA with Hamersley Iron, has provided the opportunity for comparing and contrasting some of the key synergies of the supply chains of both bulk commodities.Comparisons include consideration of things like: resource evaluation (especially quality aspects), run-of-mine handling and preparation, beneficiation, product handling and transportation, quality assurance and customer awareness, value-in-use and impacts on iron and steelmaking, and supply chain environmental aspects.Inherent within these are several other notable contrasts including: æseamsÆ and æorebodiesÆ, rocks and minerals, rejects and tailings, oxidation and weathering, suppliers and users, and marketing and purchasing, to name but a few.This paper covers some of the more interesting of these synergies and raises some potential opportunities for sharing knowledge and innovation between the two areas of activity in the future.

The two major massive sulphide deposits in the Silurian rocks of southern NSW, Captains Flat and Woodlawn, differ from classical Kuroko deposits in several ways, e.g. they lie on the flanks of felsic volcanic piles in volcano-sedimentary marine sequences, are relatively thin and large compared to individual Kuroko deposits, show prominent banding in lead-zinc ore, and contain arsenopyrite. Qualified stuctural and stratigraphic correlations of the various fault-bounded remnant Silurian sequences that host these deposits provide the basis for a new interpretation of the regional geological setting that also differs from that of the Kuroko deposits (Ohmoto, Tanimura, Date, Takahashi, 1983), and sheds further light on the distribution of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits in the Silurian rocks of NSW.

Tin mining has taken place in the New England region of New South Wales since 1872. Until fairly recent times there was little pro- vision made for environmental protection. Mining methods,which included ground sluicing and open cutting,had considerable environmental impact. Much of the topsoil was lost and there is little vegetation on the infertile and at times toxic, subsoil. Thus much of the lands disturbed by mining have not been stabilised and are eroding, causing extensive pollution of adjacent watercourses. There are more than 1500ha of abandoned tin mine sites in the New England, representing one of the worst rehabilitation problems in New South Wales and reflecting poorly on the mining industry as a whole. Recent tin mining operations incorporate progressive rehabilitation in their mining cycle. Topsoil is stockpiled and later respread. This topsoil contains a seed source, facilitating revegetation and thus stabilisation. The tin mining industry, under considerable cost pressures at present, is seeking a cost- effective revegetation technique. Most of the mines in the New England are situated in a forest environment. Trials have been conducted in the past using exotic pasture species with limited success due to the characteristics of the subsoil. Other revege- tation trials have used pine or eucalypt tree species. The cost of these techniques is a major disadvantage. Certain acacias species were observed colonising disturbed tin mining areas on very infertile subsoils. Acacias have a number of characteristics indicating a possible applic- ations in mine rehabilitation programmes.

IN conjunction with a geological investigation of the silver-bearing veins at Contact Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, a survey was made with a Geiger-Müller counter of the gamma-ray emissions from the rocks in the vicinity of the mine workings. Discontinuous pitchblende veins have been encountered occasionally in the silver-bearing fissures, and the geophysical survey was undertaken with the hope that abnormally high gamma-ray intensities, if detected, might lead to larger and more continuous pitchblende discoveries. Before the instrument was used at. Contact Lake, preliminary tests were made, first with laboratory specimens at Princeton University, and later over known pitchblende deposits at the Eldorado property, LaBine Point, N.W.T. The Geiger-Müller counter, as adapted for field use, is described; the technique of transporting and operating the instrument is outlined; and the general precautions to be observed are discussed. The results obtained at Great Bear Lake show that the instrument is capable of detecting not only a pitchblende ore shoot in a shear zone, but also the mildly radioactive "host rock" at a considerable distance from the ore body. Hence, use of the Geiger-Müller counter is urged, not just for the detailed search for an ore body in a shear zone, but for the detection of possible radioactive "host rocks" in large-scale reconnaissance surveys of unexplored regions made by prospectors and members of federal geological survey parties.

China was the world’s leading producer of barite during 1995 with 35%. The United States followed with14%. India produced 9%. Other producers included Morocco, Turkey, Mexico and Germany. Domestic production of barite during 1995 was estimated to be 600 kt (660,000 st). Nevada produced 85% of the total. Georgia was the second leading barite-producing state. The United States is the world’s largest consumer of barite. During 1995, it used 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st). US reliance on imported barite during 1995 was about 63%of total consumption, according to the US Geological Survey.

Through a joint development program between Bougainville Copper Ltd. and Nordberg, the MP1000 cone crusher was developed and tested during the period between 1982 and 1987. Following the successful prototype work, Bougainville Copper purchased an additional three units. A second prototype was installed at Codelco's El Teniente three-stage crushing installation in 1987. This unit has also completed its test period successfully. Three additional units have been sold, making a total of eight, to date. Two will be installed as secondary crushers in two separate large aggregate plants. The first unit installed in the United States was placed in operation at Vulcan Materials Company's plant in Manassas, Virginia in early May 1990. Another unit is being installed in Asarco's Ray Mines expansion. The Asarco installation will be a SAG MILL pebble crusher producing approximately 600 STPH of nominal 1/2" product. Application Objective The objective was to design a crusher that would fit on an existing 7' foundation with minimum modification and yet be capable of twice the production of a 7' cone crusher. In meeting this objective, the power rating was increased to 1000 HP, the maximum design crushing force was increased and the crusher was designed to operate at higher speeds than an equivalent size Symons cone crusher. The MP1000 was also designed to operate with a head throw that can be greater than the equivalent Symons design. SODIUM sulfite as a zinc retarding agent in the selective flotation of complex lead-zinc sulfide ores was discovered by the writer in the summer of 1919 in the testing laboratory of the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co.'s gravity concentrator at Midvale, Utah. It proved to be the first reagent to give consistently good results in the laboratory on the company's Bingham ore. In December, 1919, C. A. Lemke, concentrator superintendent, recommended that a flotation unit be added to the existing gravity mill to handle the mill slimes, using sodium sulfite as the zinc depressant. Owing to the poor lead and zinc markets and the unfavorable royalty schedules offered by the Minerals Separation Co., the project fell through at this time. In 1921, a number of laboratory tests were made at Midvale on other ores, among them ore from the Sunnyside mine at Eureka, Colo. Both sodium and calcium sulfites were used with success on this ore. Early in 1923, further tests were made at Eureka, shortly after the Sunnyside company had resumed operations after a two-year shutdown. As a consequence sodium sulfite was given a trial in the mill. The results showed sufficient improvement over previous work as to warrant continuous use of this reagent in the lead circuit. Except for a week or so in 1926 and for several weeks in April, 1927, when sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate were given trial runs in this mill, sodium sulfite has been used ever since. Sodium sulfite was chosen rather than the calcium sulfite because of its greater solubility, making it possible to introduce the reagent as a solution. This solution is introduced into the Marcy ball mills along with the original feed of ore. The consumption of sodium sulfite in the Sunnyside mill varies from ¼ to ½ lb. per ton of ore, the smaller amount probably being nearer the average. In February, 1924, laboratory work at Midvale demonstrated conclusively that good results could be obtained on the company's Bingham ore and on most of the custom ores tested by using sodium sulfite as the zinc depressant, xanthate as the lead enhancer in the lead circuit, followed by copper sulfate and additional xanthate to float the zinc. "Low and inconsistent recoveries of aluminum in the production of aluminum-killed steels triggered an extensive research program on the aluminum dissolution kinetics at McGill University. This research program led to the understanding of the melting kinetics and the hydrodynamics of making additions to liquid steel. It showed the necessity of gradually releasing liquid aluminum at the bottom of the ladle to increase aluminum recoveries.This knowledge was verified in practice at Sidbec-Dosco, where a prototype aluminum wire injector was developed and installed for the first time in Canada. The industrial application showed the validity of the theoretical and experimental results and provided further data for the mathematical modelling of the process.The development of the theoretical understanding, the industrial results, and the interaction between university and industry are presented.IntroductionAluminum is an extremely effective deoxidizer of molten steel; nevertheless, an efficient method of adding it to steel has eluded steelmakers for many years. It is well known that the recovery of aluminum used in the production of aluminum killed steel is both low and eratic, especially when the aluminum is added in the form of bars or lumps from chutes into filling ladles, a practice still common in many of today's steelmaking operations.As the density of aluminum is only about 40010 that of molten steel, it is conceivable that loose bars of aluminum simply ""thrown"" into a filling ladle will resurface before any appreciable dissolution of the aluminum has occurred, particularly if the depth of penetration of the additions is small. Before one can conclude that this is indeed the case, it is necessary to know the melting kinetics of an aluminum addition. Back in 1972, this information was not available; hence an extensive research program which focused on melting kinetics was initiated at McGill University."

In the quest to reduce overall costs and improve operating efficiency, the application of GPS based technology in open pit mining has evolved significantly in recent times. Venetia Mine has been leading the way in the De Beers group in the implementation of these systems and the realization of significant benefits from them. Following on from the successful results and the notable benefits obtained from the Wenco Truck Dispatching system and the Caterpillar CAES system on the loading and dozing equipment, Venetia has implemented the first fully functional and integrated GPS based drill monitoring system in southern Africa to its drilling operations. This paper elaborates on the concept of drill monitoring and how the vision for the application of the system at Venetia has developed and been implemented. The paper further describes the workflow involved, beginning with the initial test work done with SSI Kaltex and the Australian Drill Advisor system through to the final details of the integration of the Aquila system with the CATERPILLAR Computer Aided Earthmoving System (CAES) and the alliance with SandvikRock Tools. Most importantly, the paper details the benefits that are derived from drill monitoring and the use of the information generated by such a system. Venetia has pioneered the move towards smart partnerships and alliances with strategic suppliers within the De Beers group. The area of drilling, as the important start of the entire mining process, has been no exception and the final part of the paper covers how drill monitoring provides vitally important information that enables a supply partnership, to function cost-effectively and profitably for both parties involved. By having the type of accuracy, detail, validity and timeousness in the information being received as a result of the implementation of such a system, better management decisions can betaken, creating a more focused and efficient mining environment. In these times of increasing costs and reduced commodity prices, the mining industry will be required to continue pushing the boundaries on these technology applications in order to remain competitive.

The petroleum industry is confronted with the problem of conservalion. This is not a simple problem in view of a wide difference of opinion among authorities as to whether conservation is necessary and the specific direction that it should take. Many writers accuse the petroleum industry of wasting the natural resources of the country. Others link the consuming public with the industry in this waste. Let us define our terms; agree, if possible, on where and when waste occurs in connection with either the recovery or use of petroleum and select such plans for conservation as appear most practical. A plan for conserv3tion which appears to be logical today may not meet the problem tomorrow. The conservation of petroleum is closely linked with the advancement of marly arts and sciences and as these advance, the plan of conservation has to change. The need for conservation does not necessarily rest upon the elimination of waste. There is not necessarily a fixed connection between waste and conservation. Conservation may be necessary or desirable although there is no waste. Definitions Waste: Useless or unnecessary expenditure. Conservation: The preservation of the natural resources for economical use. Both definitions contain adjectives the interpretation of which is extremely difficult. It is the determination of what expenditures are "unnecessary" or what uses are "economical" that will require study and agreement. If one lets his automobile engine run in cold weather in order to keep it hot, it is difficult to measure that necessity. If an automobile is driven two blocks, when the driver is physically capable of walking, what is the measure of necessity. This question is in the realm of one of the oldest of sociological problems, "What is a luxury?"—a problem which has not been solved. The history of society indicates that the measure of a man's wealth has been the measure of necessity. What he can afford to buy without stinting himself in some other direction, is not a luxury to him and, if it fulfills his desires, may be considered his necessity.

THE United States Bureau of Mines established at Bruceton, Pa., in 1909, an experimental mine, for the purpose of testing the means of preventing and limiting mine explosions. During the last ten years numerous explosions have been caused to originate in .this mine for investigative purposes and the rate of propagation of the explosion wave, the pressure developed per unit of area by the explosions, and, the general results of the explosions have been carefully recorded and. studied. Means of preventing mine explosions or of limiting them to the areas in which they originate have been developed. A great deal of valuable information has been derived from the work in this mine and much more useful and valuable information will be obtained in. the future. The writer would plead, not for the opening of experimental mines in all the important coal-producing fields in the United States, but for the opening of demonstration mines, or mines in which experiments could be made with the various details of coal mining. The United States Department of Agriculture has established, in nearly every state, stations that undertake experimental work for the benefit of the agricultural interests. In addition, small demonstration plats are set aside, in suitable locations in the farming districts, where various crops are grown under scientific direction, so that the farmers in the neighborhood can note the results obtained and profit thereby. Something like this should be done for the coal-mining industry. If experimental or demonstration mines were established, methods of working adapted to local conditions could be worked out. Owing to competition in the same markets, small capitalization, or low profits, it may be an utter impossibility for any one company to try a new method of mining. Labor conditions may prevent the trial of a new method of working. It may be impossible or inadvisable to disturb existing working conditions for fear of causing trouble among the miners through real or fancied changes in the scale of wages.

Introduction Hard rock mine closure (often referred to as decommissioning), mined land reclamation and financial assurance requirements are receiving considerable attention by governments and organizations around the world. In the United States, federal agencies and the states continue to consider and make changes to laws governing mine closure and mined land reclamation, most of which were originally enacted in the mid-1970’s through the mid-1990’s. Internationally, a number of prominent groups and various countries currently are considering new laws, regulations and policies for mined land reclamation. For example, the European Union has conducted a review of existing European laws concerning mining wastes and mine water and is considering new directives concerning mine waste and mine water management and liability schemes that are likely to significantly impact mine closure and mined land reclamation. Many countries, particularly those outside of North America, Europe, and Australia, have recently adopted or are considering new mine closure and reclamation legislation and regulations. These include significant hard-rock mining countries such as Chile, Peru and South Africa. This paper identifies recent developments in hard-rock mine closure and mined land reclamation laws in the United States, focusing on several of the more significant and controversial developments. It also discusses some of the more significant international efforts to consider mine closure and mined land reclamation laws and policies and some of the notable conclusions and trends from those efforts. The focal issues discussed in this paper include requirements for the reclamation of open pit mines, including backfilling; consideration of and measures to address the mining of sulfide ores and potential for acid mine drainage; and new requirements for the estimation of closure and reclamation costs and for financial assurance for closure and reclamation.
