Cylindrical plastic scintillators were investigated for efficiency in detecting neutron-induced prompt gamma rays. Scintillator performance was compared on the basis of half-resolution and peak-to-trough ratios for gamma spectra obtained from Co-60 (1.17 and 1.33 MeV), Th-228 (2.62 MeV), and PuBe (4.43 MeV). Various sizes of Pilot Chemical scintillators (types B, F, M, and Y) were tested. The best half-resolution, 7.7 percent for PuBe, was achieved with a 5-by 5-inch Pilot Y?scintillator and dual photomultipliers. Comparison with sodium iodide (NaI) scintillators and the use of plastic scintillators for on-stream analysis of sulfur in coal is discussed. Plastics were found to be unsuitable for on-stream analysis of materials having complex prompt gamma ray spectra; however, they could conceivably be used for those yielding Simpler spectra.

This paper presents an analysis of fracture mechanisms in coal subjected to bi-axial state of stresses, indentation of laterally con- fined coal specimen. Coal specimens were loaded to failure by the straight wedge indenters at various lateral confinement pressures. Strain distribution and acoustic emission characteristics of coal specimens under stress were recorded. The influence lines of vertical forces acting on the horizontal straight boundary of the coal specimen for each type of wedge indenter have been established using holographic interferometry technique. The effects of wedge indenter angle, confinement pressure, and coal anisotropy on fracture types, failure modes, and post-failure conditions were studied. The results indicated that combined application of holographic interferometry and acoustic emission monitoring techniques is not only suitable for studying deformability of heterogeneous and microscopically discontinuous material under stress but it also enhances the mode of fracture during the post failure stage.

Injection of inert gases to combat mine fires has been practiced in various parts of the world for a long time. Of late, nitrogen has become the preferred inert gas for control of mine fires and safe salvage of longwall equipment as compared to carbon dioxide or fuel gases produced from burning of fuel. In India, carbon dioxide has been used for fire fighting in a number of mines during the 1960s and 1970s. More recently inert gas produced from burning of fuel oil in surface plants has been used in controlling the atmosphere in fire areas in two mines. In yet other cases, liquid nitrogen has either been poured directly into fire areas in liquid form or injected in gaseous form to keep the fire in check. Nitrogen produced in liquid form in an oxygen plant is more costly than nitrogen produced from PSA (pressure swing adsorption) based plants. A PSA-based plant has been installed in one of the Indian mines in 1986 and more are in the offing. This paper reviews the application of various inert gases in Indian mines and discusses the likely trend of inert gas application in Indian mines in the future.

Until the beginning of the year 1930, conditions in the oil industry were such that the production engineer was chiefly concerned with improving the efficiency of development and production technique. Good engineering practice had been adopted to devise and improve methods and materials better suited to drilling for and producing oil and gas. These efforts reduced the hazard and expense of deeper drilling, increased the ultimate recovery from reservoirs and lowered production costs. Equipment was of better design and materials were better suited for the work and were more permanent. These improvements naturally have contributed their share toward increasing the volume of crude oil produced each year. The industry is now faced with a need for preventing a waste of this natural resource; waste which came as a result of continued reckless drilling of new reservoirs. To make a careful study of this economic problem and to devise methods for correcting these conditions was a logical problem for the production engineer. Much time and study have been devoted to the question, and remedial plans have been suggested during the last year and a half. The principles of unit operation have attracted the engineer's attention, as they present ideal conditions for the most scientific and economical development of an oil field. Unitization During 1930 unitization of producing and potentially producing areas has made real progress, and as each new unitized development is agreed upon the objections that loomed so large at the inception of the idea fade into comparative insignificance. Undoubtedly the outstanding example of the efficacy of unitization is the Kettleman Hills project in California. Unitizing this structure, with its almost incredible reserve, is an important step forward in the industry's concerted effort toward conservation. In this present research, a polymer poly (acrylamide-allyl thiourea) (PAM-ATU) with an average molecular weight 1.66 × 104 g/mol was used as a depressant in the flotation separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite and galena. The micro-flotation experimental results showed that PAM-ATU exhibited a strong influence on the flotation performances of chalcopyrite and galena, but had little effect on that of molybdenite within a pH range of 9.0~11.0 at a dosage of lower than 6.0 mg/L. The flotation results of bulk flotation tests illustrated that PAM-ATU showed a stronger depression power than sodium thioglycollate (TGA) and sodium sulfide. The comparison results demonstrated that PAM-ATU and TGA had an advantage in reducing galena and chalcopyrite impurities in the molybdenum concentrate, respectively. With the combination of PAM-ATU and TGA, a good flotation separation result was achieved through one roughing operation where the recovery of molybdenum in the froth product was over 75.0%, while the recovery of copper and lead were less than 22.0% and 15.0%, individually. It was also found that a molybdenum concentrate with Mo grade of 46.32%, Cu grade of 0.16%, Pb grade of 0.06%, was obtained by a closed circuit flotation flowsheet of one roughing-three scavenging-five cleaning with a Mo recovery of 77.67%. Feasibility studies of the on-stream analysis of lead in mineral slurries by S. K. KAWATRA. P. Eng. (Canada). Ph.D. (Australia). M.Sc. (India) (Visitor) Instruments for the measurement of lead in mineral slurries by the use of isotopes can be based on the absorption of Iow-energy gamma rays, backscattering of beta particles, or X-ray fluorescence. The merits of each method are discussed, and the reasons for the selection of the beta-backscattering technique are given. A system using this technique has been designed, constructed, and tested on samples of concentrates from an industrial concentrator.

"The aim of the study is to have a good understanding of the change in the seepage field during and after the tunnel excavation in weathering alteration rock. Field tests are used to monitor the changes of the water table and the numerical model is used to analysis the influence of the seepage filed with different operation conditions during and after the tunnel excavation. Results indicate that the depth, diameter and pumpage of precipitation well are the main factors that have a great influence on the drainage effect. Results also indicate that different operation conditions had various effects on the decrease in water yield during tunnel construction and the recovery in groundwater level after construction.INTRODUCTIONAs a potential disease during tunnel construction, Gushing water not only affected construction schedule, increased construction cost, as well as affected tunnel stability and safety during operation, but also decreased ground-water level. What’s more, the fall of water table caused by gushing water in tunnel would have influenced surrounding residents’ living water, agricultural water and ecological environment around tunnel. In recent years, enough emphasis has been paid to the influence on environment due to the construction of tunnel as a result of the reinforcement of people’s environmental protection awareness.As a result of water collection and drainage after excavation, groundwater was discharged into the tunnel, which caused a loss of water resources in the adjacent mountain mass. Furthermore, during tunnel operation, it was difficult for groundwater level to resume its original condition, which caused a bad ecological environment, because drainage system during tunnel construction destroyed its original hydrologic dynamic balance.In order to study whether decreased groundwater level resulting from tunnel construction could be restored during operation to its original condition, this paper gave a field monitoring on tunnel displacement during construction and simultaneously, generalized model of regional hydrogeology was created according to field hydrogeology to carry out a calculation of stable seepage flow and draw comparisons between recovery conditions of various water levels."

Studies have been made of the method of propagation of yield in iron single crystals in the range of 205' to 295OK by microscopic and X-ray techniques. 'The results show yielding in two stages, of which the second corresponds closely to the Lüders extension in polycrystalline iron. IRREGULAR macroscopic markings On the polished surface of a polycrystalline mild steel test piece during the lower yield extension were first observed by Liiders.' Two years ago, AlliedSignal embarked on a journey to improve QUALITY. However, the focus of this endeavor was on the CUSTOMER and not the traditional product focus. It wasn't that a focus to improve product quality wasn't fruitful in the past. We've practiced it in the chemical industry for many years with significant results. But our industry today is in a survival mode and yesterday's way of doing business is simply not good enough. In the mining industry, we have to make lug strides in how we do business or face losing our customer base. As you are well aware, other parts of the world are importing our technology at a rapid rate. We must work smarter to stay ahead of our customers ever more demanding need for higher quality at lower prices. With this as a driver, throughout the Corporation we reviewed in depth how we support our customers to keep them competitive and sought to eliminate work which did not help them reach this goal. Our first year of emphasis was on tools: how to hold meetings, gather data, and how to make decisions. This sounds very basic, I know, but you can't begin to imagine how productive meetings can become when you start with an agenda and prework delivered days in advance, and agree at the start of the meeting what should get accomplished. In the second year, we applied these tools to our work processes. We mapped how we do our work, scrutinized each step for value to the customer, and then set to work on how we could do things better. The areas we concentrated on were customer linked commercialization of new products, manufacturing and materials management. Our discussion today will focus on the commercialization of new products.

What should be the chief aim of a metallurgical laboratory ? Before answering this, let us ask, What should be the chief aim of metallurgical instruction ? Taking a definite case, that of the iron blast-furnace, should we chiefly teach the methods of bosh- and tuyere-cooling, of storing and assembling materials, of removing the iron and cinder, of firing boilers and cleaning stoves ? Or should we aim chiefly to lay clear and bare the nature of the reactions which occur in the blast-furnace, the reason why changes in the rate of driving, in the blast-temperature, in the composition of the cinder, cause their known effects ? Shall we chiefly describe or explain ? Shall we teach chiefly the looks or the reasons ? Put thus, the question admits but one answer. Hours of labored description at a technical school give a less true and clear view of actual metallurgical operations than a brief visit to metallurgical works. If in my teaching 1 take the far more laborious course and lay so very great stress on explanation and so little on description that I seem to err on that laborious side and not to give description enough, the student will quickly make up for my lack of description in his first weeks in the works; he will there learn quickly and easily what I could have described only obscurely and with labor. Details of practice are learned easily and retentively in the works, but with difficulty and slowly at school. With the principles, and especially the chemical principles of metallurgy, the reverse is true. The works have little facility for teaching them; the school has every facility. The place then for explaining, for teaching principles, is the school. But,

In-situ experiments were performed in a tunnel built in loess soil with the displace- ment components of the tunnel lining and the acceleration components of the tracks measured during the passing of trains. The measured parameters were then studied by the spectral method. As a result, the dynamic forces of trains was simulated numerically and a deter- ministic dynamic nonlinear analysis was carried out by means of finite element method. The results obtained by two different approaches were in fair coincidence. Results of the study indicate, that the low and medium frequency components of the dynamic train loading would be crucial for the dynamic responses of the tunnel lining and surrounding mass, and their effects would increase with the speed of passing trains within a certain range.

CERTAIN local conditions were known to govern in large measure the successful adaptation of liquid-oxygen explosives to the large-scale blasting at Chuquicamata. The wide variation in hardness of the rock at this mine makes necessary the use of several types of explosives. A locally manufactured, relatively cheap black powder is used in blasting the softer waste and capping material, where a thorough displacement breaks the ground sufficiently. Before the introduction of L. 0. X., an ammonia dynamite of about 65 per cent. strength was being used exclusively in the harder underlying orebody, where a strong disruptive as well as a displacement effect is required for breaking the ore. The L. 0. X., as developed for quarry work in the United States, has a practically pure carbon cartridge material, and the explosive has an extremely high rate of detonation, which should therefore cause it to usefully develop its full disruptive effect in hard ground. The individual blasts at Chuquicamata are large, black-powder shots which dislodge masses of rock averaging 250,000 tons each, and dynamite shots which dislodge masses averaging 80,000 tons each. It was desirable, therefore, to attempt to displace with L. 0. X. the faster, higher-cost ammonia dynamite used in the smaller blasts. It was not considered practical to attempt to displace the low-cost black powder with L. 0. X., as estimated costs showed no probable saving if this were accomplished. Since it was desirable to continue shooting relatively large blasts for effective operation, it was recognized that larger storage facilities than had been in use would be needed for the liquid oxygen. Because of the difficulty of transporting and discharging large storage containers of efficient design, the better plan appeared to be storage and discharge of the liquid at the place of manufacture, and transportation of the filled soaking boxes to the blast.

AS Slawson1 and others have already shown, from a geometrical view twinning in the diamond structure may be considered as a reflection across a (111) plane or as a reflection across a (112) plane. An analysis by Ellis and Treuting2 showed that the twinning plane must be the (111) plane, but that a twin might have lateral boundaries along (112) planes. Earlier Slawson1 and Ellis3 had shown that only (111) twinning was present in diamond and germanium respectively. Since an ingot of silicon, 1 in. in diam and 1 1/2 in. long, prepared from Dupont silicon to which 0.2 pct Be had been added was available, it was examined for twinning. The ingot had been cooled slowly from the bottom. A section 1/16 in. thick was ground off from the bottom and then the ingot was sliced vertically through the center. Spectrographic analysis indicated only faint traces of iron and silver, in addition to the beryllium. The sample was first etched with a hot solution of 10 pct NaOH in water.and photographed. Back-reflection Laue patterns were made of the vertical and horizontal sections in the regions designated in Fig. 1. Orientations were obtained for each twin using the Greninger technique. Several regions of the same orientation were found; thus regions A and K were identical, similarly N and P, and C, G, J, and L. Knowing the angles between the traces of the twinning plane on the surface and the specimen axis, the indices of the twinning plane were deduced. In all cases the twinning plane was found to be (111); lateral boundaries, however, were found which were (112) such as the one indicated in Fig. 1. Therefore, as in the case of diamond1 and germanium' only (111) twinning occurs in silicon. We wish to thank Mr. Hino for the use of the ingot as well as for its metallographic preparation. Oil production and activity in northern and central Pennsylvania was slightly less in 1939 than in the previous year, but owing to higher average prices 1939 was undoubtedly a better business year. The last quarter showed markedly increased activities throughout all of the Pennsylvania fields. Production, Stocks and Price Storage of Pennsylvania crude oil at pipe lines and refineries totaled 5,413,000 bbl. on Dec. 31, 1938, and declined during the year 1,124,000 bbl. to a total of 4,319,000 bbl. at the end of 1939. The stocks of crude at the end of the year represent the lowest point reached in Pennsylvania-grade crude storage in recent years. Stocks increased slightly during April, May and June, but decreased during all other months of 1939. The Bradford field production within the state of Pennsylvania averaged 35,340 bbl. per day throughout 1939, which represents a decrease of 1419 bbl. a day from the 1938 average. The production in central and southern Pennsylvania increased 1176 bbl. per day, averaging 12,159 bbl. throughout 1939. Table 1 includes annual production for the part of Bradford field situated within the state of Pennsylvania, for central and southern Pennsylvania, and for the entire state of Pennsylvania. A definite segregation of production between the Bradford field and central and southern Pennsylvania is slightly ambiguous because a portion of the oil from the newly discovered Music Mountain pool is included statistically in each area. In all probability the entire increase and some small addition to the production from southern Pennsylvania can be attributed to oil produced from the Music Mountain pool. Within the Bradford field, six price changes occurred throughout the year. At the beginning of 1939 the price of Bradford crude oil was $1.80 per barrel, whereas by the end of the year it had risen to $2.50. The weighted average price for Bradford crude during 1939 was $2.059 per barrel.

These are exciting times for those of us involved in the discovery, development, beneficiation, sales and end uses of industrial minerals. The known sources of traditional raw materials are rapidly being consumed or covered up with highways and urban developments. We would never knowingly cover up a source of gold, silver, diamonds, or even base metals with a shopping center, but it has been difficult to justify not locating construction atop a limestone, granite, or sand dune deposit. During the last ten or so years most of the users of significant amounts of industrial minerals have established task forces made up of geologists, mining engineers, beneficiation experts, ceramic and refractory scientists, and senior members of their purchasing departments whose duty it is to determine where the raw materials for their particular finished products will come from now and farther down the road, like 20 years from now. Likewise, these same ceramic and refractory scientists are developing new materials which require a never ending change into different raw materials and the traditional materials must be refined by selective mining, exotic beneficiation practices and expensive but necessary post-beneficiation treatments to produce minerals for commercial use that were either theoretical minerals or at best showcase specimens when most of us here today were in school studiously acquiring a vocabulary which included Calcite, Magnesite, Dolomite , Feldspar, (Labradorite had the play of colors the prof could see but which I rarely focused on) Wollastonite, Celestite, Chromite, Olivine, Barite and Lepidolite to name a few.

Based on the results of field observation and physical model analyses, a computer simulation method, FEAEBP, has been developed for simulating the breakage of the main roof by considering it as a Kirchhoff plate on Winkler elastic foundation. By this method various parameters of rock property, different boundary conditions of the working face and the initiation, development and results of the breaking process of the main roof with different geometric dimensions can be effectively simulated. Since the main and immediate roofs, and the coal seams are treated as an integrated mechanical system, the interaction among them can be studied in detail.
