Surface mine equipment operators in the Campbell County region of Wyoming's Powder River Basin have found new ways of solving old problems. Technology, experience, competitive pressures and an increasing grasp of economies of scale have driven mine operators, equipment manufacturers and suppliers to specialization of applications. In economic terms, today's coal price of $4.95/t ($4.50/st) equates to $2.53/t ($2.30/st) in 1980 terms - an incomprehensible value at that time. This article describes some examples of change and adaptation made by Powder River Basin coal operators in overburden stripping equipment and techniques. It focuses on the evolution of the design and use draglines, shovels, trucks, scrapers and dozers.

The composition of the coexisting phases in the methane-ethane-n-pentane system was determined at 100°F. This was accomplished by withdrawing samples of the coexisting phases under isobaric-isothermal conditions. The relative amount of each of the components present in the liquid and gas phases was determined by conventional analytical fractionation methods. The phase behavior of this system approximates that estimated from generalized correlations which take into account the influence of the nature and amount of each of the components present upon the equilibrium. It was found that for particular pressures and temperatures the equilibrium constant of each of the components was influenced significantly by the composition of the system and this effect was more pronounced at the lower pressures for methane than for the components of greater molecular weight. However, at the higher pressures approaching the maximum two-phase pressure for the system at this temperature the composition markedly influences the equilibrium constants of all the components at a particular pressure and temperature. The results of this study are presented in graphical and tabular form. Introduction The phase behavior of many of the binary systems containing parafin hydrocarbon components from methane through n-pentane has been investigated during recent years. In addition the compositions of the coexisting phases in mixtures of crude oil and natural gas have been studied.' However, these results do not establish the influence of the nature and amount of the other substances making up a multi-component system upon the gas-liquid equilibrium constant of any one component. A preliminary correlation on the basis of values for binary systems was made2 utilizing such experimental information as was available. However, there is need for much additional information regarding behavior in systems containing more than two components. Study of the phase behavior of ternary systems offers a feasible attack upon the determination of the influence of composition as well as of pressure and temperature upon the several equilibrium constants concerned. An investigation of the phase behavior of the methane-propane-n-pentane system at 100°, 160°, and 220°F was reported.".' This work served to illustrate the marked influence of concentration of the other components upon the equilibrium constants. Variations of as much as 50 pct in the equilibrium constants for methane for fixed temperature and pressure were observed in regions remote from the critical state. Likewise there was a marked variation in the equilibrium constants of propane and n-pentane as a result of changes in the composition. These results indicated the desirability of investigating additional ternary systems. The present paper deals with a study of the methane-ethane-n- pen-tane system at 100°F, which is similar in many respects to the work upon the meth-ane-propane-n-pentane system cited above.

Bed separations position, size, development characteristics and their influence factors have been analyzed in-depth by experimental and theoretical methods. The results show that the key strata determine the creation, development and space-time distribution of the overburden bed separations and fractures. Based on the dynamic growth principle during the two-stage development of bed separations, the theory of section-grouting for the overburden bed separation space and the O-ring theory for the pressure-relieved methane drainage are proposed. The technique has been applied in some coal mines in China to reduce surface subsidence and for methane drainage. Longwall and/or room-and-pillar mining operations in multiple coal seams could not only induce subsurface and surface subsidence but also cause interactions between these mined coal seams. The interaction might destabilize mine structures and subsequently induce additional strata movements. Mechanical models to utilize the predicted subsurface deformations to assess the interactions and the consequences have been developed. The models are incorporated into a computer program, CISPM-MS, for predicting the final surface movements and deformations as well as the mining interactions associated with multi-seam coal mining operations. It predicts final surface movements and deformations caused by the individual mining operations and by the interactive effects. The program can also be used to assess mine structural stability in multi-seam mining operations. The paper presents the developed interaction models and their application in surface subsidence prediction caused by multi-seam mining operations. A case study involving mining in two coal seams, using longwall and room-and-pillar mining methods, respectively, will be used to validate the program.

While the light metals are recognized generally as a distinct group in technical literature, economic classifications and data usually still treat them as part of the nonferrous group of metals. However, the economic characteristics of the light metals also differ markedly from those of other nonferrous metals. The distinctiveness of the light metals, as, a group and individually, becomes evident when their growth, since World War II is compared with that of other metals, as in Table 14.3.1. The growth of light-metals production has been much sharper than that of other metals. A weighted average for the light metals shows an increase of 112% during the 1958 to 1968 period. This compares with a 62% increase in the "All Primary Metals" component of the Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production. The contrast was even sharper during the next six years (1968-1974), with light metals production up another 50% as against a 21 % increase in the FRB Primary Metals production index. The most important reason, however, for considering light metals separately is the trend and pace of technological change and not their distinctive statistics. Technology both creates and demands increasingly sophisticated materials. As technology advances and as all the world makes more extensive use of advanced technology, the importance of the light metals is likely to accelerate rapidly. There may be a profound clue to the future in the fact that light metals were predominant among the materials used in the construction of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. In determining what materials to use for the spacecraft and its equipment, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has explained that it did not look to "some of the more exotic metals" and relied instead on "generally proven materials." Accordingly, it apparently used a wide variety of metals, including precious metals, rare earths, special steels, copper, and light metals. What seems particularly significant is that, in seeking performance, NASA relied as heavily as it did on the light metals. Materials breakdown estimates show that aluminum accounted for over 75% of the materials used, titanium for another 5%, and magnesium was also used. Thus, light metals accounted for over 80%' of the materials used for the Apollo 11 spacecraft. The light metals are also unique in their availability. They rank high in abundance among the elements in the earth's crust. Aluminum is the third most abundant element, after oxygen and silicon, with magnesium ranking eighth, and titanium ninth. Among the structural metals, aluminum is the most abundant in the earth's crust, iron is second, magnesium third, and titanium fourth. That the domestic consumption of gasoline displays a marked seasonal variation, with a low in the winter and a high in the summer, is well known. It is logical to expect that the nature of the variation has itself been undergoing a change as a result of improvement in roads, general employment of closed cars, and growth of mass haulage; but so far as I am aware the change in seasonal variation has never been investigated and measured. It is the purpose of this paper to present the method and results of such an investigation, undertaken as a contribution to the technique of planning operating schedules now so prominent in connection with the functioning of the industry under a Federal quota system. "INTRODUCTIONThe low calorific value and the high moisture and ash contents of run-of-mine (r.o.rn.) lignite limits the utilization of Saskatchewan lignites to thermal power plants in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and western Ontario. On the other hand, the low sulphur content and the low mining cost make lignites potentially attractive for new coal markets, if suitable processes can be found for upgrading. Economic upgrading to a higher quality fuel would make lignites more acceptable for industrial and utility boilers.This paper presents a summary of the process engineering evaluation of coal upgrading technologies conducted in support of a study of selected lignite upgrading processes. The summary presents the relative advantages and offers specific comments on the application of coal upgrading technologies for lignites. ResourcesLignite comprises the largest fossil fuel energy deposits in Saskatchewan. The total resources of immediate and future interest exceed 27 billion tonnes. The measured and indicated lignite resources of immediate interest are large enough to last for over 200 years at the current production rate of about 10 million tonnes per year (Table 1).Saskatchewan lignitedeposits are present in three different geologic formations: (I) the Ravenscrag Formation of Paleocene Age in southern Saskatchewan; (2) the Swan River Formation of Lower Cretaceous Age in central north Saskatchewan; and (3) the Judith River Formation of Upper Cretaceous Age in central west Saskatchewan. The deposits in the Swan River and Judith River Formation are not currently of economic interest.The Ravenscrag deposits are confmed to four lignite basins, namely: the Estevan, the Willow Bunch, the Wood Mountain and the Cypress basin (Fig. 1). The estimated resources of immediate interest in the four basins are over 7 billion tonnes (Table I). These resources include lignite seams at least 1.5 m thick, at depths of less than 45 m.The average quality of lignite varies relatively little between the four basins considering the distance between deposits (Table 2). There is, however, a progressive increase in moisture and ash content, and a decrease in calorific value and carbon content as one moves westward from the Estevan to Wood Mountain and Cypress basins. The Estevan area deposits are of higher rank despite the fact that they are stratigraphically younger than the Willow Bunch deposits (Cameron and Marconi, 1979).In upgrading lignite to a higher quality fuel, it is important to know not only the average proximate and ultimate analysis (Table 2) but also other lignite characteristics influencing the product quality . For example, Figure 2 shows the effect of lignite HIC ratio on the product equilibrium moisture for hydrothermal treatment of lignite. It is apparent that lignites with a higher HIC ratio, or high liptinite content yield much better quality product for the same hydrotreatment conditions. Other examples of lignite characteristics which are important in upgrading include distribution of sulphur forms and mineral matter, maceral composition and degree of surface oxidation."

It has been observed that the rock debris of a strain burst event are often in the mode of tensile fracture. Seismic waves could create tensile fractures in the material nearby reflecting surfaces, such as at the boundary of the fracture zone and the rock surface of an underground space. The fractured rock could be ejected to the space when the seismic waves are powerful enough. The average ejection velocity of the ejected rock is a measure of the magnitude of a burst event. The ejection velocity is directly associated with the released energy from the seismic waves and with the strain energy stored in the rock prior to the burst. In some cases, the seismic wave induced tensile fracture and the energy conversion occur in successive moments during bursting. In this paper, tensile fracture caused by seismic waves is investigated through an 1D model. The relationship of the average ejection velocity of the ejected rock in a rockburst event is analytically established with the energy of the seismic waves and the strain energy stored in the rock.

Magnésio e suas ligas estão sendo estudados para serem usados como materiais de implantes bioabsorvíveis, para uso em dispositivos cardiovasculares ou ortopédicos. A dificuldade que se encontra em utilizar implantes à base de magnésio é a sua alta taxa de corrosão. Este trabalho tem por objetivo estudar o comportamento corrosivo de ligas de magnésio bioabsorvíveis (ZK30 e ZK60) em eletrólito que simula o fluido corpóreo (SBF Kokubo) através de técnicas de perda de massa por imersão e curvas de polarização. Os resultados indicaram uma menor resistência à corrosão da liga ZK60 no eletrólito analisado comparada com a liga ZK30.

The Canadian National Railway system is completing construction of the first major tunnel in North America to use the coarse-aggregate (+ ½ -in.) shotcrete technique of primary support and lining. The tunnel was driven 29 X 20 ft in cross section, 10,760 ft long, passing under an industrial and residential area of Vancouver. With the exception of 1400 ft in soil (mainly impervious tills), the tunnel passes through a very young series of flat-lying sedimentary beds, to a large extent so incompletely consolidated as to fall apart on exposure. For a conventional steel-support system, it was estimated 8 WF, 28-lb steel should be used at 5-ft centers. Cost of erection including lagging would amount to $120 per linear ft of tunnel at 304 per lb. With 8-in. concrete cover on the steel, lining would cost $280 per linear ft at $82 per cu yd. Thus, minimum cost of support and lining would have amounted to $400 per linear ft. It is now estimated that at least 90% of the rock tunnel would have required support and 100 % required lining. Specified shotcrete support was 6 in. in the arch and 4 in. in the walls. Cost of this work was roughly $100 per linear ft. In addition, another $10-$12 per ft has been incurred in drainage and waterproofing wet areas and in measures to correct experimental and operational errors, thus finalizing the support as a lining (Fig. 1). The tunnel was driven three shifts five days weekly, no blasting being allowed by city ordinance between midnight and 7.00 a.m. A six-drill jumbo was used to drill a 10-ft round, 110 holes blasted three times daily. A 2-in. layer of shotcrete was applied to the newly blasted arch commencing within 45 min of blasting. This was done from a flying deck that extended over the muck pile from the jumbo (Fig. 2). Also during the mucking cycle, the preceding incomplete arch support was brought up to 6-in. specification. The walls were sprayed 4 in. thick during the drilling cycle (Fig. 3). The shotcrete machines and aggregate bins were mounted on the jumbo.

"An advanced casting simulation-based optimization approach was applied in this study to assist in the improvement of the mold design of aerospace components made of A3 56 alloy. By using this approach, mold filling and solidification related defects (including macro-shrinkage and shrinkage porosity) were significantly minimized and hence it helped in cost reduction, performance enhancement and quality assurance of complex A3 56 cast parts.An experimental validation and detailed calibration procedures of the models for prediction of macro-shrinkage and shrinkage porosities were performed using A3 5 6 plates cast in fiiran-silica sand molds using the Prometal's Rapid Casting Technology (RCT) - mold printing technology. Correlations between Niyama values and the pore percentage were also developed. Thus, the severity level of shrinkage porosity can be determined via the Niyama criterion. Predictions were then compared with the macro-shrinkage and porosity measurements in plates of various plate thicknesses and in other commercial A3 56 casting components.IntroductionThis paper describes the process modeling approach used in the development of the mold design technology used to produce assist in the improvement of the mold design of aerospace components made of A356 alloy. Nova Flow&Solid™ software [3] was applied in this study. This casting simulation software was previously validated for several alloys including Ti, steel and superalloys [1-4]. The objective of this paper is to calibrate and validate the simulation software for A356 alloy sand mold castings. For this purpose, an experimental validation and detailed calibration procedures of the models for prediction of macro-shrinkage and microshrinkage (e.g., shrinkage porosities) were performed using A356 plates cast in fiiran-silica sand molds using the Prometal Rapid Casting Technology (RCT) mold printing technology. The details of the RCT technology are shown in Fig. 1 [5]. Prometal's RCT technology is used for rapid production of sand molds and cores directly from CAD files. The RCT technology relies upon ink jet printer technology to selectively bind the grains of sand to create three-dimensional sand molds and cores. Mold filling and solidification modeling as well as stress analysis are typically performed to properly design the casting and the rig system of each prototype component."

O objetivo deste trabalho é demonstrar o desenvolvimento da compensação de sopro no Alto-Forno 3 da CSN durante as manobras dos regeneradores para o ciclo de sopro com o incremento da vazão do ar soprado vindo do moto-soprador. Para a realização deste trabalho utilizou-se a metodologia DMAIC. Na apresentação do resultado final serão demonstrados valores alcançados em torno de 60% de redução da pressão da base do alto-forno com o desenvolvimento e por consequência, um aumento de sua produtividade.

Iron sulfides are part of many ore deposits affecting flotation separation of non-ferrous base metals from them. Open-circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were carried out with pyrite and pyrrhotite electrodes to investigate their reactivity under various flotation conditions, which involved the use of TETA, SMBS, and their combination. TETA was found to adsorb on the electrode surfaces causing a significant increase in charge transfer resistance of the product formed, which was most significant at OCP. This effect is much less with SMBS, indicating its greater surface reactivity compared to TETA. The combined use of these reagents decreases charge transfer resistance to a greater degree than that experienced with their individual uses. Addition of Cu2+ as a potential activator to this system nearly eliminates the action of TETA on the electrode surface, which can be attributed to sequestration/chelate formation in liquid phase. The relative effects of these reagents on pyrrhotite electrode are similar to that of pyrite. The main difference between the pyrite and pyrrhotite electrodes is that the observed charge transfer resistance on the pyrrhotite surface with each reagent case is significantly lower by 3 to 4 fold. This is compatible with its anodic nature and ease of oxidation since the OCP value of pyrrhotite is lower than that of pyrite. Results are discussed in relation to flotation/depression behavior of these iron sulfide minerals in mineral separation processes.

Empresa Minera de Mantos Blancos S.A. successfully commissioned two copper SX-EW plants in late 1995. The design of these solvent extraction plants is such that chloride tenors of 30-35 g/l can be tolerated in the leach solution with no contamination of the electrolyte. The design was carried out in conjunction with Bechtel-ARA engineers and was based on the successful application of the available technology in the market; this mainly focused on decreasing the aqueous entrainment in the organic phase. This entrainment can reach 20,000 ppm in conventional plants.

The mineral industries have a continuing need for market forecasting and analysis for a variety of purposes, among which are organization and control of the sales effort, financial and corporate planning, and evaluation of the anticipated revenue from investment in proposed projects. For anything beyond the simplest extrapolation, some kind of economic reasoning or analysis is called for, which may or may not be incorporated into a formal or quantitative model. The principles described here apply to most of the commercially significant minerals and metals. The examples are drawn largely from the copper market, as it is the one with which I have the most practical experience. Practical forecasting is the process of analysis and synthesis from three categories of knowledge: facts and statistics, theory, and practical knowledge and informed opinion. Although many attempts have been made to build forecasts on only one of these three pillars, none has been successful as an operating procedure because of the lack of balance. There are no facts about the future-only about the present and the past. Facts can illuminate the future, but the future can be described only in terms of probability or more or less likely states of affairs-not as a continuous extension of the past and present. Likewise, theory, although useful as an organizing discipline and for providing a methodology of analysis, is inadequate for the complexities of reality. This is especially so when there is feedback between plans and forecasts to produce a new outcome and when there are significant elements of unpredictable free will, such as presidential jawboning or foreign policy considerations. Such elements are difficult to accommodate in neat theories, although they must certainly be reflected in the forecasts. Pure opinion frequently suffers from both a lack of-disciplined reasoning and the presence of biases or self-interest. While the future is unknown, it tends to cast its shadow before it; hence, forecasting is the art and science of positioning oneself so that the shadow becomes visible to the forecaster.

During the 1950's and 1960's a program of geologic mapping of counties has been underway in Nevada by geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Nevada Bureau of Mines. The aping has been done principally at reconnaissance scales, with more detailed work in local areas. Geologic maps are either published or open-filed for about a dozen counties at scales of 1:200,000 or 1:250,000. One by-product of the geologic mapping has been the recognition of about 80 Tertiary volcanic centers from which large or very large volumes of volcanic material ranging from rhyolitic to andesitic in composition have been erupted. For purposes of this discussion these are regarded as the major centers; the tally does not include hundreds and perhaps thousands of small rhyolitic domes and plugs and basaltic vents. About 15 to 20 of the 80 major centers are believed to be calderas ranging in diameter from 3 to 25 miles. Some have been described in the literature by geologists of the Nevada Test Site and others. However, the vast majority of the 80 centers have not been described in print, and we are indebted to our colleagues for locating them for us in many of the counties. Description of Project: Tamar Group’s civil division was awarded a contract to implode the Sun Hotel, an abandoned 14-story building located along Bat Yam’s coastline, roughly two kilometers south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On Nov. 6, 2012, Tamar Group’s experts positioned explosives in strategic locations of the building, targeting its central pillars, which then caused the building to collapse within seconds. Tamar Group used a relatively small amount of explosives in order to generate a well-controlled blast. This is the largest scale demolition carried out in Israel to date.

The successful application of color sorting machines has established sensor-based sorting in the mineral industry in recent years and is considered today as a significant innovation in processing technology. However, we are only at the beginning of (market) introduction. New sensor systems have been developed, which exploit material properties such as electrical conductivity, magnetization, molecular structure, thermal conductivity etc. This opens up new exciting pre-concentration and upgrading possibilities for many applications such as nickel, gold, copper and other ores as well as for industrial minerals, diamonds and other gem stones.

Both crystalline and sedimentary rocks are being considered to host a deep geological repository (DGR) for nuclear fuel waste in Canada. In the past several decades, considerable research has been conducted around the world to better understand geomechanical processes associated with development and long-term performance of a DGR. The Nuclear Waste Management Organization?s (NWMO?s) technical research and development program is examining a number of potentially suitable rock formations to support implementation of Adaptive Phased Management, Canada?s approach for long-term management of nuclear fuel waste. Rock engineering will play an important role in siting, design, and construction of a DGR for nuclear fuel waste. Post-construction activities such as excavation maintenance, monitoring, decommissioning, and closure will also involve rock engineering. The type of host rock selected for a DGR will influence the scope of rock engineering activities and related research requirements. This paper outlines key rock engineering aspects to be considered in developing a DGR in sedimentary rock.
