Several features of smelting and refining operations make them appropriate technology to adapt to the processing of "wastes" not only from the minerals Industry itself, but for wastes in general. These features include significantly higher temperatures than are achieved in conventional Incinerators and also good thermal stability derived from the mass of molten metal and slag in the furnace. This paper expands on Information contributed to the Mervyn Willis Symposium in July 1992 and includes knowledge generated in the last two years of waste processing R&D in a sealed 100kg capacity DC arc furnace specially constructed for the "Environment" process being developed in Wollongong. As one product of-the process is a foundry-type iron, the feed always contained ferruginous dusts or heavily contaminated scrap. For the dusts, sewage sludge has been used as a binder and also as a proportion of the fuel-reductant. To achieve the necessary bath carburisation, It is beneficial to add other lower reactivity carbons such as "kish' graphite, carbon from electrode butts, dusts from coke ovens, carbon from aluminium pot line residues, dry cell batteries etc. Metallurgical factors involved In process control, Including metal and slag, compositions, are discussed.

Lead usage in paint, anti-knock gasoline additives, pipes, seals, and solder has declined markedly over the past 30 years. Products utilizing the unique properties of lead and its ability to be recycled have survived and grown. These products include shielding, glass (particularly TV and computer screens), sheet for roofing, stabilizers for PVC, insoluble anodes for metal production, electronic solders and lead acid batteries. With the loss of markets many companies have decreased lead product development efforts. Much of the patent lead materials development is devoted to lead acid batteries. In the past 25 years, the automobile battery has been almost doubled in power and reduced in weight, leading to a nearly three-fold increase in performance. Corrosion-resistant lead alloys and improved battery designs have made battery lead usage more efficient. The same corrosion-resistant battery alloys are utilized to increase the life of electrowinning anodes. The mining industry has seen a flurry of merger and acquisition activity of late. Rising metal prices, increased spending on infrastructure in developing nations and the growing demand for companies to diversify have helped fuel M&A activity in this industry. Many analysts believe that the robust M&A activity will continue, particularly if the demand for mineral resources in India and China remains strong. Because prospective purchasers need to evaluate the various risks confronting target companies, acquiring mining companies requires a considerable amount of due diligence. Of these risks, environmental risk is critical and warrants significant analysis. The failure to properly assess environmental risks associated with remediation, reclamation, compliance or litigation can undermine the transaction. Such assessment is a difficult endeavor, however, due to several challenges that companies face when assessing environmental risks. To make matters more complicated, despite these challenges, many sellers ask buyers to assume all environmental risks with limited post-closing indemnification rights. This article addresses the most significant issues that commonly arise when conducting environmental due diligence and allocating environmental risk in connection with M&A transactions in the mining industry.

Natural gas has been known to exist for many years in the St. Lawrence Valley, between Quebec and Montreal, and more partirularly in the vicinity of Louisville and Three Rivers, 74 and 94 miles respectively northeast of Montreal, and 98 and 78 miles respectively southwest of Quebec; the distance from Montreal to Quebec along the St. Lawreuce River being about 175 miles. It was not until 1880 that any practical explorations were begun with the hope of finding gas in sufficient quantities for commercial uses. In this year Messrs. Piret and Genest, of Three Rivers, sank a well near St. Maurice to a depth of 50 feet, where solid rock was encountered. A similar well was drilled through the glacial and allavial drift, in the same district, in 1883, by the Messrs. Renaud Freres and Dubois, to a depth of 70 feet before solid rock was encountered. In this latter well a strong flow of gas was obtained. The gas was an outflow from a very limited reservoir in the porous glacial gravel, which had been filled from the gas resulting from the decomposition of vegetable remains, which had been buried in the gravel at the time of its deposition. Subsequently, other wells were sunk in the same way, with the hope of getting gas in commercial quantities from similar reservoirs. This paper deals with recent geologic studies in the slate belt of Northampton, Lehigh and Berks counties, Pennsylvania. The work was conducted under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Topographic and Geologic Survey. Three years have now been spent in detailed consideration of the economic geology of this region. In the field, particular attention was paid to the bearing of geology on quarry development and property valuation and the object of this paper is to summarize the results from that viewpoint. Excellent studies of a somewhat similar nature have already been carried out by Bowles,' but with the emphasis upon the details of quarrying and fabricating methods, rather than upon the geologic relations. The Northampton-Lehigh-BeRks District Location The region here discussed lies in east-central Pennsylvania and extends southwestward from Delaware River, on the New Jersey line, to the Schuylkill in north-central Berks County. It is an elongated belt occupying the northern sections of the three counties mentioned and lying along the southern edge of Blue Mountain. Its length is about 50 miles and its average width five or six, though in places it attains a maximum of 10 miles. There are no large cities in the region, but about 10 miles south are Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. Railroads serving the slate belt are the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, and the Pennsylvania along the Delaware River, the Lehigh Valley and Central of New Jersey along the Lehigh, and the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and Reading on the Schuylkill. In addition, two railroads—the Philadelphia and Reading and the Lehigh and New England—cut obliquely through the slate region to reach the more isolated communities. Saudi Arabia’s mineral potential offers development target that compliment the national effort to diversify the income of this oil and gas economic based nation. Ma’aden, a joint stock company with paid-up capital of US$1 billion, has from its inception in 1997, actively developed in-house engineering and management skills to transform the Arabian shield’s mineral potential into such real projects. Gold mine operating facilities of 100,000 oz/yr underground and 50,000 oz/yr open pit are de-scribed, as well as 3 targets, two of which are underdevelopment; Al Hajar (3,000 tpd at 2.5 gpt Au)and Al Amar (5,000 tpd at 20 gpt Au). Emphasis is also on exploitation of phosphate rock and down-stream fertilizer products, based on the Kingdom’s107,000 sq. km. northern basin geological reserve. Al Jalamid, the prime target, represents 216 million tonnes of these P2O5 reserves. Saudis and expatriates, together, lead international engineering companies and contractors operating and developing these facilities.

Quartz-limestone feed mixtures were ground in a laboratory-size, choke-fed, high- pressure roll mill. As compared to individually ground minerals, the harder component (quartz) in the product mixture is coarser, and the softer component (limestone) is finer. An energy split index is introduced for quantifying the disproportionate split of the mill energy between the feed constituents. This index is incorporated into a grinding kinetic model for simulation of the product size distributions of the mineral components as a function of energy input to the mill. The self-similar character of the size distributions is analyzed and an energy-size reduction relationship for the roll mill is highlighted.

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, are upgrading their existing particle accelerator for the next generation of experiments and have three major packages of underground construction work in progress. Each package involves the construction of shafts, cavern, tunnels and surface buildings. This paper gives an overview of CERN, the LHC Project and a more detailed discussion of design process, design review and construction works of Experimental Point 5. The LHC works at Point 5 include two large shafts, two major parallel caverns with a total span of 50 m, which are separated by a 7 m wide and 28 m high concrete pillar, and a system of secondary tunnels and caverns. The overburden ground consists of around 50 m of water bearing moraine (silty, clayey gravels and sands) overlying 20 mof molasse, which consists of horizontally bedded marls and sandstones. The shaft shave been constructed with ground freezing, primary concrete lining, membrane and secondary slip formed concrete lining. The concrete pillar was then excavated and concreted in advance of excavation of the two caverns. Cavern construction includes primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by waterproof membrane and primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by water proof membrane and insitu concrete secondary lining.

Three independent studies carried out in Europe, Australia and North America indicate that during the next decade the demand for mining, minerals processing and metallurgical engineers will be significantly higher than the supply. THE year 1923 has seen new developments in the only French wells, i.e., those of Pechelbronn, Alsace. The output of the two pits now in operation totaled more than 75,000 tons, although there was a two months' strike. It is expected that 1924 will see an output of 85,000 tons; and 1925, 100,000 tons. A new pit has just been put in operation (fourth pit; the third not being in operation). The oil and the oil sands are extracted at a depth of 350 meters. Special attention has been given to the development of the distillation and refinery plants, particularly the manufacturing of lubricating oils. The present output of the lubricating-oil factories is approximately 20,000 tons neutral oils; 20,000 tons spindle oils, together with 2000 tons of paraffin. Engineers are introducing the most modern American processes of refinery and distillation. The company has 3000 employees. The capital of the company has just been increased from 45,000,000 francs to 81,000,000 francs. Some other drilling has been done in the Auvergne and Landes districts, and some oil has been found, but in too small quantities for commercial operation. Great hopes, however, are entertained of finding large quantities of oil, and the French Chambers have voted a special fund of 20,000,000 francs for investigating oil in France. Much work has also been done in the Colonies but without much success; oil is found in different districts of Tunis, but in relatively small quantities. In Morocco, drillings have not been successful. A prospecting mission recently returned from Madagascar gave an optimistic report concerning the oil conditions on the Island. Prospectings are being made also in French Indo-China. The present domestic yearly consumption is about: Gasoline 750,000 metric tons, kerosene 70,000 metric tons, automobile lubricating oil 75,000 metric tons.

GEOLOGISTS who are acquainted with the mines of northeastern Mexico realize that the most important lead-silver replacement deposits of the province are confined to a single formation. But since the formation is several hundred meters thick, the author has determined the relative position of the lead mantos in the belief that this information will prove useful in the search for new mines. This article describes the stratigraphic location of lead-silver replacement deposits known in several mines situated in a region comprising part of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. The area studied extends for 200 km* (125 miles) from east to west and 70 km (45 miles) north to south.

Oxygen converting of hot metal (LD/BOF) is contemplated as an object of simulation. Oxygen converting is a highly complex thermo-chemical process comprising a series of matter and energy transformation and transportation steps that makes the simulation very challenging. The basic principles of CONSIM 5 oxygen converter simulator are presented. Simulator is a comprehensive combination of a physical model with several empirical submodels describing all properties and processes that affect the final result of a converter blow, final mass and composition of steel, slag, dust and converter gas as well as the end temperature of steel. CONSIM simulator is used for simulation of series of high and low carbon steel blows. Simulated steel temperatures, oxygen consumption, blow time and iron oxide content of slag are compared with measured values. Problems of simulation and requirements for quantitative simulation of oxygen converter process are discussed.

During shallow tunneling in an urban environment, deposits or pockets of saturated soil or fractured, weathered rock are often encountered. Under such conditions, special problems with tunnel support, underpinning of structures adjacent to the tunneling, and/or flow of groundwater into the tunnel occur. If the ground conditions are appropriate, i.e., the soil is sandy, silty or fissured, or the rock is weathered or fractured, the solution to these tunneling problems may be chemical stabilization of the ground. Injection stabilization as an aid to tunneling is practiced extensively in Europe and its use is increasing in the U.S. The advantages of this technique over conventional solutions can be substantial in terms of cost and time, especially in mechanized tunnel boring where even a small zone of soft ground can bring the tunneling to a complete halt. In this paper European practice in using chemical ground stabilization for urban tunneling will be reviewed. In contrast to previous papers which have dealt with specific applications (1,5,8,9) this paper will broadly cover the subject, addressing itself to grouting techniques, costs, the reasons for grouting, philosophy of the users towards grouting, design of grouting solutions (or lack thereof) and methods of quality control. Differences with U.S. grouting practice are also noted. The information presented is derived from several visits to Europe, discussions with European and U.S. grouting personnel, and the available literature (2). The author's most recent European trip was made under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Transportation in conjunction with a research study being performed at Stanford University; a detailed report of this visit is available in reference (6).

INTRODUCTION Since the big discovery of Kuroko deposits in Kosaka mine, Akita Pref., northeastern Japan in 1959, major Japanese mining companies have been engaged in extensive exploration for the deposits expending large amounts of money. Above all their exploration activities have been particularly fruitful in discovering new deposits in northern Akita Pref. It is estimated that the total ore reserves newly found in the area are at least 50 million tons. Kuroko deposits are the most important ore source of copper, lead and zinc in Japan and have been mined since last century in the said area. Kuroko (black ore) is fine, compact aggregates with sphalerite , glena and barite as principal constituents and chalco- pyrite, pyrite and tetrahedrite as subsequent constituents. The name Kuroko comes from its appearance. It is not rare that total grade of copper, lead and zinc reaches 20 - 30% and the gold and silver content is also fairly good. Accordingly the unit value of the ore is much higher than the ore from other types of deposits. Besides the Kuroko ore, the Kuroko deposits consists of Ohko (yellow ore, massive cupriferous pyritic ore), Keikoh (silicious ore, cupriferous network ore) and gypsum ore. This type of deposit is considered to be not only an important source of base metal but also a source of gypsum and barite. Although the importance of this type of deposit had been commonly recognized, sub-surface nature of the occurrence hampered exploration work. In recent years the improved exploration techniques and increased knowledge of the Kuroko deposits have met with remarkable success in the location of new deposits. This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplishing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowledge the very great willingness of these outstanding scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is possible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydrocarbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to complete an analysis. Furthermore, it is unnecessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis. The Mass Spectrometer The mass spectrometer should not be confused in any way with the optical 01 grating type of spectrograph now in general use. The operation of the mass spectrometer is entirely different in principle and bears practically no resemblance to the optical or grating instruments. The original conception and development of the mass spectrometer dates from and is generally credited to Aston, of Cambridge, England. An early accomplishment of his research, about 20 years ago, was the discovery that the inert gas neon was actually a mixture of two kinds of atoms, one of the atomic weight 20 and the other of atomic weight 22. These two components occurred mixed in such proportion as to yield the usual atomic weight of 20.2.
