Emf measurements on SE galvanic cell: SS; Ni-NiO I solid electrolyte/ZrO2 + CaO I [Pb + Bi]liq alloy; (PbO); SS were made in the temperature range 913-1034 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead. Bismuth alloys with bismuth in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 3.08 mass per cent and oxygen in the alloy varied by equilibrating the metallic system with a suitable (PbO) slag. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to calculate the ternary interaction parameter, eBiO at temperatures of 913, 953 and 993 and 1034 K and to observe the temperature dependence eBiO = 19 200/T - 17.454. Quasichemical fonnulation was employed to yield lnf BiO and reveal the effect of bismuth on oxygen in lead. The results obtained are discussed on the basis of theoretical models and the value of Wagner's energy parameter 'h' estimated to predict the results in a Pb-Bi-O system.

In 1947, only a year after its own establishment, the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics formed a Mineral Economics Section. Originally, this Section consisted of a mineral economist, four geologists and three auxiliary employees. Then, in 1954, it was reorganized into a professional body of six members, all mineral economists, one of whom was the chief mineral economist. At this time, a mining statistical officer from the Bureau of Census and Statistics was attached to the Section to bring about a closer liaison between these two agencies. The addition of another mineral economist in 1961 brought the Section's professional staff to its present strength of seven. In recent years, the Mineral Economics Section has gained considerable support by becoming part of the Mineral Resources Branch of the Bureau of Mineral Resources. This Branch, which has the general role of monitoring the performance of the mineral industry in Australia, has two other specialized sections- Mining Engineering and Petroleum Technology-which bolster and complement the Mineral Economics Section.

One of the primary means of .control of health hazards from respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres is through design and operation of mines to meet mine health and safety regulations and recommended practices. A U.S. National Academy of Sciences study concluded that for significant progress in coal mine dust control, research should be directed more toward obtaining fundamental understanding of the origin, transport and characteristics of respirable coal mine dust. Theoretical and experimental studies on transport of dust in mine airways, particularly coordinated efforts to validate theory with practice, are scarce. Some empirical models, developed on the basis of experimental data, are available but these models cannot be applied to new .conditions. The purpose of this paper· is to present the results of theoretical and experimental studies on the transport and deposition of dust in mine airways. This study is a part of an on-going research project in the Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust. In the paper, the assumptions of the modeling phase of the project and the development of a convection-diffusion equation for dust transport in mine airways will be outlined. The important aspect of the modeling effort.is the capture of the deposition phenomenon. The experiments performed under controlled conditions in a typical mine airway as well as under normal mine operating conditions will be discussed. The comparison of the model predictions ·with experimental results will be made to identify critical areas of agreements and deviations. The implications of the findings and areas for further research and development will be identified.

SYNOPSIS This paper traces the developments in flotation practice at Anglovaal's Prieska Copper Mine, with em¬phasis on the depression/deactivation of lead and zinc. A depressant system was devised to accept feed material that was once regarded as untreatable. Of particular interest is the long-term downward trend of concentrator working costs in real terms. This trend follows the classic Experience Curve, which relates production costs to cumulative experience. It is felt that the experience-curve concept has important implications for the mining industry in general.

The CSIRU Division of Mineral Engineering is developing various techniques for the on-line determination of moisture in coal and coke, and some instruments are now commercially available. These techniques permit accurate and rapid determination of moisture in materials directly on conveyor belts or in bins. The most promising techniques for direct on-belt measurement of moisture in coal are capacitance and microwave transmission. A non-contacting under-belt capacitance and gamma-ray backscatter technique has determined moisture in coal to better than 0.5 wt'/. in field tests at BHP Stockton Borehole Colliery, NSW. Mineral Control Instrumentation Pty Ltd have been licensed to manufacture the capacitance gauges and have installed five commercial units in the coal industry and other industries. Microwave transmission techniques have an advantage over the under-belt capacitance technique in that they are not sensitive to vertical segregation of moisture in coal on the conveyor belt. A laboratory prototype of a microwave transmission gauge has been constructed and tested. Microwave techniques, based on a measurement of attenuation and phase shift, are under development and are expected to be field tested in 1987. These new techniques will enable a wide range of thickness changes to be accommodated. Capacitance and microwave transmission methods are unsuitable for materials of high electrical conductivity, such as coke. CSIRO is therefore developing a fast neutron and gamma-ray transmission technique, which is proving very accurate in laboratory tests. This technique overcomes many of the limitations of thermal neutron moisture gauges and it is expected to be field tested in 1987.

King Island Scheelite had been using dealer modified front end loaders for two years when in 1974 it started to increase production. Suppliers were then quoting long deliveries for underground diesel trackless mining equip- ment, and the Company was forced to modify surface machines which had become redundant as production from the open cut phased out. The results were generally successful and encouraged further adaptations. Drill jumbos excepted, the Company now uses only converted surface machines in areas worked by diesel engined equipment and for all support and auxiliary functions.

Pelotas de minério de ferro representam uma parcela significativa do mercado transoceânico de minério de ferro, contando com uma participação importante de empresas brasileiras. Pelotas concorrem favoravelmente com granulados e sínteres de minério de ferro na carga metálica de fornos, em particular devido à sua elevada resistência à degradação durante o manuseio e transporte. Entretanto, pelotas ainda sofrem desse problema, que resulta na geração de finos, removidos previamente à alimentação do forno, ou de cacos, que podem resultar no aparecimento de clusters em fornos de redução direta. Esses efeitos danosos da degradação podem ser minimizados caso uma metodologia adequada de caracterização de pelotas e de simulação do processo de manuseio se encontrasse disponível. O presente trabalho trata do desenvolvimento de metodologia inédita e inovadora para previsão de resultados de degradação de pelotas, desde a usina pelotizadora até o pátio ou forno do cliente, desenvolvido como parte da parceria entre o Laboratório de Tecnologia Mineral da COPPE/UFRJ e a Samarco Mineração. O trabalho mostra ainda uma validação preliminar a partir de um ensaio de quedas múltiplas em laboratório, mostrando ótima aderência. Um simulador do processo foi desenvolvido, o qual permite inserir as características das pelotas produzidas, bem como o fluxograma de manuseio, permitindo prever a intensidade da degradação.

Neutral bifunctional organophosphorus solvent extractants (such as carbamoylmethylphosphonates and carbamoylmethylphosphine oxides) strongly extract lanthanides and actinides and do not extract more than 40 other elements from mineral acids. Because of their excellent properties they have been found useful for F-element recovery and purification processes. A brief overview of the lanthanide and actinide extraction chemistry of these reagents will be given.

The problem of materials balancing is reviewed with particular reference to the minerals industry. A broad statistical framework is established that, besides extending the classical estimation problem, allows questions concerning the value of sample information to be addressed. The following are examples of such questions: How much money should be spent on sampling? Which streams in a plant should be sampled? What should be sampled? The approach adopted makes use of Bayesian analysis. The discussion includes an illustrative example involving a simple flotation circuit.

At the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, May, 1879, I made the first announcement in America of the results obtained by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas and Percy C. Gilchrist, in their efforts to eliminate phosphorus in the manufacture of steel in the Bessemer converter and the open-hearth furnace.' The first published statement in an American newspaper was a reprint of the first Thomas-Gilchrist paper,which I sent to J. C. Bayles, at that time the editor. At the suggestion of many friends who were present at the Pittsburg meeting, and others who are cognizant of the beginnings of the process in the United States, and for the information of the younger generation of the iron and steel fraternity, I have thought it eminently proper that the history of the process in detail should be given where I made the first announcement and where the process has had its largest development. During my residence in England, from April, 1873, to February, 1879, and as a member of the Iron and Steel Institute since 1874, I was present at many of its meetings during those years. At nearly every meeting the burden of discussion was the question of the use of pig-iron containing phosphorus in the manufacture of steel by the Bessemer or the open-hearth process. In my biographical notice of Thomas: read at the New york meeting of the Institute, February, 1885, I show. that the working-out of the process was not a hap-hazard or accidental inspiration, but the culmination of many years of investigation of experiments and theories which had been carried on aid advanced by chemists and metallurgists at home and abroad.

THIs paper brings forward a discussion that was prepared for the meeting of the Coal Division in Chicago in 1938.1 War in Europe less than a year after that meeting, followed by our defense preparations and entry into the conflict, caused general cessation of large-scale experimentation on the subject, and it is best to confine this paper to events in the United States during the five-year period since the preceding paper was written. The views of members of the Coal Division's Committee2 on Rock-dust-ing for 1943 were obtained before this paper was written and the manuscript was reviewed by them. Extent of Rock-dusting Statistics on the use of rock dust in the United States during the years 1930-1933, appearing on page 97 of Volume 139 of the Transactions are extended in Table I herein through the year 1941. The results through 1933 did not appear encouraging, but there has been improve-ment since that date. It has always been true that the larger operations were the ones that used rock dust. In 1941 only 10 per cent of the mines in the country used rock dust, but they produced 57 per cent of the coal, employed just under 50 per cent of the miners, and accounted for 52 per cent of the man-hours. Unfortunately, collection and compilation of these statistics are slow procedures, and figures dealing with the tremendous war expansion of the industry are not likely to be available for a year or more. In 1941 the five leading states in regard to percentage of man-hours worked in mines using rock dust were: Utah, 92.1; Wyoming, 79.3; Alabama, 77.4; New Mexico, 72.5; West Virginia, 65.3. PERHAPS the most striking feature in the three newly discovered fields in the Los Angeles basin is the enormous thickness of oil sand. The total thickness is not yet known in any of the fields, since no well has as yet been drilled deep enough to pass through it. In the Signal Hill area a maximum of 1500 ft. or more of productive sand has been penetrated. In the other fields the interbedding of considerable shale members renders the total sand thickness somewhat less, but in all cases the depth of sand strata is enormous when compared with other California fields. For instance, in the Coalinga field the total thickness of sand on the average has been less than 100 ft., while in the Midway and Sunset fields not more than 250 ft. of actual productive sand has been encountered in any one place. On the basis of the metallographic observations, it can be deduced that the segregation observed is representative of the solute segregation produced during crystal growth. Some deductions are also made about the interplay of the two substructures, cells and striations, and about the mode of cellular growth. investigation both experimentally and theoretically. However, the concentration profile of the solute segregated during crystal growth has not been examined in detail. Tin crystals grown from melts containing various concentrations of lead have been most extensively studied. In a recent investigation of Sn-Pb alloys, Kramer et a1.2 were able to measure the effective solute distribution coefficient, k,, at the most advanced points of the solid-liquid interface, over a large range of growth conditions, finding it to approach the value of k,, the equilibrium distribution coefficient. The purpose of the paper is to study the smelting process of copper concentrate with high Cu/S ratio produced in Africa or other areas around the world and theoretically analyze the influence of slag type on the smelting process. The paper has compared the processes used successfully in smelters, including CAPEX and OPEX and other factors, to provide reference for the industry to select the best process under specific conditions. INTRODUCTION At present, a great amount of copper concentrates with high Cu/S ratio, with chalcocite being the major source of copper, have been produced or are about to be produced in the Copperbelt in Africa and other countries in the world. The copper concentrate is usually high in copper (~30–55wt.%) and low in sulfur (~10–15wt.%). The conventional processes of smelting-converting and roasting-leaching-electro-winning for treating this type of concentrate is high energy and materials consumption such as electric power\fuels\flux et al. The direct-to-blister (one-step) smelting process can be considered favorable due to a reduction in processing steps. Up to now, there are four copper smelters in the world operating with the direct-to-blister smelting process. There certainly are problems in the process such as high copper content in the slag, strict operation requirement of slag cleaning electric furnace, etc. Except technical issues, the impact of factors on economical aspect such as power and material cost needs to be considered comprehensively in process selection. In this paper the technical issues of direct-to-blister smelting process, including slag treatment process, were analyzed and the comparison to the conventional processes and economic analysis of direct- to-blister smelting process to treat high Cu/S ratio concentrate were done.

THE Oaxaca coal fields, shown in Fig. 1, are located in the Alta Mixteca region in the states of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero. Known out crops are scattered over 3125 square miles. It is probable that further exploration will reveal a more extensive area of deposits. The region is of great importance to Mexico, as at present the only sources of coal are the fields near the U. S. border. Steel mills are also located in the North, and finished products must travel 600 to 800 miles to the area of consumption in central Mexico. The Oaxaca coal, only 120 miles south of Mexico, D.F., lies close to several iron ore deposits. If this coal can be used in steel production is will be possible for the Mexican steel industry to reach new dimensions, commensurate with the growing industry of the central region. Coal can be utilized in thermoelectric plants in this area, which lacks not only petroleum and natural gas but also electric power. It can be used as domestic fuel, replacing charcoal and firewood.

There are generally two methane passes in conjunction with the seafloor natural cold seepages, as is schematically shown in Fig. 1. The first pass consists of the coupled anaerobic oxidation of methane and anaerobic sulfate reduction, as well as sulfur oxidation in the bacterial mats and immobilization thereafter in the sediment layer and on the seafloor. Through the first pass, calcium and organic carbonates are formed in biological and chemical processes from the methane (Luff and Wallmann, 2003; Luff et al., 2004). The detailed structure of the seafloor methane consumption process unit and its biological and chemical processes were introduced in Yamazaki et al. (2005). The other pass consists of direct bubbling into the water column. Through this pass, organic carbonate is formed with biological oxidation, and a small amount of the methane escapes into the atmosphere. Methane flux is supplied to these two passes through the sediment layer from the deeper structures. The structure of the methane supply process unit was introduced in Yamazaki et al. (2006).
