PURPOSE The Temporary Face Support System (TFSS) consisting of beams, posts and carrying-emplacing equipment was developed to provide temporary supports between the working face and the permanent roof supports. 2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The system consists of: ? A Beam And Post Carrier And Deployer (BAPCAD), a self-propelled machine that carries as well as emplaces the beam-and-post sets. ? Lightweight mechanically self-deploying posts designed to safely support a load of 10,000 pounds each. ? Lightweight constant strength beams (bars) capable of sustaining an approximate equally distributed load of 8500 pounds. Note. Problem: Blasting is a hazardous component of surface mining. Serious injuries and fatalities result from improper judgement or practice during rock blasting. This paper describes several fatal injury case studies, analyzes causative factors, and emphasizes preventive measures. Method: This study examines publications by MSHA, USGS, and other authors. The primary source of information was MSHA’s injury-related publications. Results: During the 21-yearperiod from 1978 to 1998, the mean yearly explosive-related injuries (fatal and nonfatal) for surface coal mines was 8.86 (95% CI: 6.38 -11.33), and for surface metal/nonmetal mines 10.76(95% CI: 8.39 - 13.14). Flyrock and lack of blast area security accounted for 68.2% of these injuries. This paper reviews several case studies of fatal injuries. Case studies indicate that the causative factors for fatal injuries are primarily personal and task-related and to some extent environmental. A reduction in the annual injuries in surface coal mines was observed during the ten-year period of 1989 - 1998 [5.80 (95% CI: 2.71 - 8.89) compared to the previous ten-year period of 1979 - 1988 [10.90 (95% CI: 7.77 - 14.14)]. However, such reduction was not noticed in the metal/nonmetal sector, i.e., 9.30 (95% CI: 6.84 - 11.76) for the period 1989-1998compared with 11.00 (95% CI: 7.11 - 14.89) for the period 1979-1988. Discussion: A multifaceted injury prevention approach consisting of behavioral/educational, administrative/regulatory, and engineering interventions merits consideration. Impact on industry: The mining community, especially the blasters, will find useful information on causative factors and preventive measures to mitigate injuries due to flyrock and lack of blast area security in surface blasting. Discussion of case studies during safety meetings will help to mitigate fatal injuries and derive important payoffs in terms of lower risks and costs of injuries.

An investigation of trends in exploration expenditures for a selected group of mining companies was undertaken for the interval 1968-1971. These trends were compared with financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and the implications of these trends are indicated. The sample consists of 21 mining companies, of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the ex- traction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining, such as oil and gas sales. No companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in the sample. This definition held up in 1968, however, its strict application became more difficult through the years. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business and deriving a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la situación del carbón peruano, así como las mejoras para impulsar su producción a nivel nacional. Para ello, es necesario una mayor facilidad en el empleo de la electricidad y de los combustibles líquidos y gaseosos derivados del petróleo como en las cocinas domésticas, así como la estimulación en la sustitución del petróleo por el carbón en diversos usos. Asimismo, el Estado desarrolla un plan donde se beneficie a los mineros particulares de producción de carbón a través de asistencia especializada, instalación y operación en el puerto de Chimbote, así como de una planta de lavado y briquetación de los carbones de la citada región del Santa, y la adquisición de locomotoras y material rodante especial para el transporte económico del carbón en el ferrocarril que comunica las minas de carbón con el citado puerto de Chimbote.

"This paper highlights some of the potential application areas of knowledge-based systems in the mining industry. The basic theoretical principles associated with knowledge-based systems are discussed and the justification for mining applications is given. The paper concludes with a brief description of a prototype knowledge-based system applied to scraper selection that was developed at Université Laval on a LISP machine. IntroductionThe beginning of Artificial Intelligence coincided with the conception and development of the first computer systems some thirty years ago. At that time researchers were euphoric about the possibility of modelling the human reasoning process. Soon, however, they discovered that the combinatorial aspect of the set of possible solutions to a particular problem did not permit an in-depth evaluation.In the mid-60s researchers started to look at the heuristic approach because it was more suited to human behaviour with its congnitive abilities (i.e. representing, reasoning, problem solving and advising). The heuristic approach allows possible results rather than exact solutions and it is more rapid and cost effective than the exhaustive combinatorial analysis. The heuristic approach did allow some noticeable progress in the seventies with the development of the first expert system called MYCIN with the objective of diagnosing blood infection diseases."

No processo de lingotamento contínuo de placas, o controle de fluxo de aço líquido entre o distribuidor e os moldes pode ser realizado através de tampão refratário ou válvula gaveta. Quando se usa o controle via tampão refratário, aproveita-se o mesmo para reter um volume mínimo de aço no distribuidor, visando efetuar a partida do veio. Este volume de aço é importante para evitar o congelamento da primeira porção de aço e prevenir o arraste de impurezas existentes no fundo do distribuidor para o molde. Já quando se usa o controle via válvula gaveta, para acumular o volume de aço necessário, utiliza-se de outros “artifícios”, como o uso de anteparos metálicos em forma de bujões, cuja eficiência é limitada. Visando melhorar o desempenho de partida das máquinas com controle de fluxo de aço distribuidor-molde, via válvula gaveta, desenvolveu-se o chamado tampão flutuante de fibra cerâmica, cujas funções principais são: equalizar o nível de aço para proporcionar uma partida normal e impedir que impurezas arrastadas pela primeira porção de aço, se dirijam para os veios. Este trabalho mostra o desenvolvimento pioneiro desta técnica para distribuidores de aços planos na ArcelorMittal Tubarão.

I have observed three deposits of iron ore in Pitkin County, which present unusnal characteristics, and wliich seem to throw some light upon the genesis of iron ores under certain conditions. They occur in the precipitons mountain ranges, forming spurs on the Pacific slope of the main continental backbone. The first is a body of limonite, lying upon the side of a high mountain, which forms part of the base of Hayden's Peak. This limonite forms a sheet of considerable area, and is thin at the edges, and about 3 feet in thickness in the central portions. It is conformable with the slope of the mountain side, and rests upou the eroded rocks, but is not comformable to them. The ore is laminated and shaly in texture, and has the physical characteristics of the hard limonites, such as are found in the Marquette District, Lake Superior. It is covered with loose earth and rocks, from 1 to 2 feet in thickness. Much of the ore is filled with impressions of' spruce leaves, such as are found in the forests now covering the slope of the mountain. In the rocks forming the mountain, iron pyrites occurs in bodies, and this limonite probably owes its origin to such a body not far distant. The US economy grew steadily in 1989, reaching an annual rate of $5.3 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion=1012 ). The value of domestically processed, mineral-based materials rose 5% to $315 billion (US billion=109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 14% to $11.6 billion, while industrial minerals rose 2% to $20.2 billion. Recycled scrap was valued at $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were $2.31 and $3.56/kg ($1.05 and $1.62 per lb) for copper, $1.58 and $2.57/kg (72 and $1.17 per lb) for aluminum, 77 and 97 cents/kg (35 cents and 44 cents per lb) for lead, and $1.58 and $2.09/kg (72 cents and 95 cents per lb) for zinc. Many mining and metal companies reported reasonable profits. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. 250 million US citizens already possess 172 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 4% to 6.8 million units, while truck and bus production fell 1 % to four million units. New housing starts fell 9% to 1.4 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. Imports of crude and refined petroleum costing $50 billion exceeded domestic crude oil production. President Bush expressed "strong concerns about this country becoming further dependent on foreign oil." And the Department of Energy held a series of hearings around the country to develop ideas for a "national energy strategy."

The Anaconda Co. has two economic uses for the drainage water from its underground mines in the district of Butte, Mont. One is the precipitation of copper, which the company has been accomplishing at the Leonard precipitating plant for many years, and the other is the leaching of the Berkeley pit discard, where millions of tons of leach material have accumulated. The acidic mine drainage water is an ideal leaching medium for the latter purpose, but the solids and colloidal material suspended in the water must be removed before it can be applied to the low-grade Berkeley leach dump. For this reason, it is important for Anaconda to have an efficient means of cleaning mine drainage. Such a means has been found and tested at one mine and is now to be incorporated in a new central pumping station the company is planning at the 3900-ft level of the Kelley mine. This plant is to be activated in early 1967 and will replace the antiquated four-lift High Ore mine pumping plant which was designed and installed before tailing backfill was adopted. The new plant will feature eight pumps with a total capacity of 8000 gpm in a single lift against a total dynamic head of 4100 ft. For the most efficient and economical operation of the plant it is imperative that all possible mud be removed from the drainage water before pumping.

THE task of recovering most of the contents of an oil and gas reservoir economically presents many and varied problems. In order to attempt intelligently a solution to these problems, an understanding of fundamental physical laws is essential. As the pertinent facts needed in applying these laws to recovery problems are not readily obtainable, observation must be made and the data tabulated. Here, good judgment must be exercised, for at best the information is meager. The engineer is well fitted to undertake the task of solving this problem. In my opinion, the decision on the part of some production executives to allow the engineer to cope with the oil recovery situation and other problems, is an outstanding example of improvement in production methods. The executive head must make this decision or the qualified engineer will be working under a severe handicap with the present system of supervising the production of oil and gas. A qualified engineer should have not only the required technical training but also enough field experience to enable him to understand the difficulties encountered in producing oil and gas. Such a man tactfully cooperating with the practical oil man can greatly improve present methods of oil recovery. The realization that nature's forces have not been efficiently controlled in past recovery of petroleum deposits has recently brought distinct improvement in production methods. Papers are to be presented at this meeting discussing in detail improved methods of conserving gas in both flowing and pumping wells, and also methods of lifting oil after Nature's supply of gas has proved inadequate. The application of back pressure to producing oil wells has not, to my knowledge, been extensively applied in Oklahoma or Kansas up to the present time. Most of the flowing wells are allowed to flow through the casing until the rock pressure has been dissipated. However, some flowing wells have been tubed before the well stopped flowing through the casing. Recording pressure-gages can be installed to study well performance.

Recovery of metals contained in the electrode materials of batteries was studied considering an integrated recycling process constituted by physical and chemical operations. The physical treatment included the shredding of the spent batteries, followed by a wet sieving operation of the fragmented material. The physical behavior of Ni-Cd and Zn-Mn based (alkaline and saline) system batteries was studied and compared. In that sense, shredding operation was performed and the sieving of shredded fractions was accomplished to evaluate the efficiency of the separation of electrodes and scrap. For Ni-Cd batteries the loss of electrode material with the supra fraction (scrap) after the shredding operation was lesser than the Zn-Mn batteries. Especially for saline-type batteries, the electrode attached to the scrap was substantial leading to important losses. This difference can be explained by the composition of the case materials and the internal physical constitution of the electrodes. The wet sieving studies carried out allowed optimizing the separation of the electrode fine fractions from the scrap materials through the analysis of selectivity Cd/Fe or Zn/Fe. For Ni-Cd batteries, maximum selectivity was achieved for the granulometry of 1.4 mm, while for alkaline and saline systems best selectivity were obtained at 2.8 mm and 5.6 mm, respectively. This process allowed the recovery of about 70% of electrodes for Ni-Cd and alkaline systems, and 50% for saline batteries, with less than 5% of scrap as contaminant. This physical step can be considered as a pre-treatment of this type of waste material envisaging its valorization by chemical treatment, as improves the concentration of the elements of interest and decreases the iron content.

In China the hydrogeological type of solid mineral deposits can be divided into A. Mineral deposits with fissure water; B. Mineral deposits with pore water; and C. Mineral deposits with karst water. The hydrogeological conditions of mineral deposits with fissure water are relatively simple with the exception of a few cases. Mineral deposits with pore water are few but great amounts of ground water can be encountered in the mine accompanied by floating sand or slope failure during the exploitation. Mineral deposits with karst water are complex in their hydrogeological conditions. Enormous inrushes occur frequently in the mines of north China; Karst collapses are a serious matter in the mines of the south; Subterranean river and conduit systems are often encountered in the southwest. This paper will give full discussion on these features and put forward a way of combating and controlling the groundwater problem in accordance with type and feature.

Construction of two shafts, as well as associated deep concrete structures, for a major storm sewer project in Milwaukee, Wisconsin required ground water control and temporary ground support to depths ranging from 19.2m to 55.0m. Lowering of the site ground water table eras not possible because of potential consequences for existing nearby structures. Construction entailed completion of two shaft collars into bedrock. In addition to the shafts, several adjacent connected. structures were completed. Ground freezing was selected to provide temporary ground support and ground water control for all excavations. The first application of using reinforced frozen earth was successfully incorporated on the project. The procedure enabled the contractor to create openings in excess of 9.1m in height, without bracing, through highly stressed frozen earth walls. Design features and construction procedures for completion of ground freezing and related excavation are reported.

Until recently, the universal practice in New Zealand was dry-crushing and direct cyaniding. With ores containing no mineral sulphides, and little or no coarse gold, 'this method, in spite of its many disadvantages, gave excellent results, and was by far the best one available, pending the solution of the slimes-problem. But the situation has now been changed. The successful treatment of the slimes, enabling the mines not only to do away with dry-crushing, but also to deal with the mineralized ores of the lower levels, which are, for obvious reasons, quite unsuited to that method of treatment, has made wetcrushing universal; and this may be taken as satisfactory proof of its superiority over the former practice. Western coal mines are operating under increasingly challenging ground conditions. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are cooperating with mines to evaluate how these conditions affect mine opening stability and related miner safety. A system was developed to monitor rock and coal stresses during mining of an entire longwall panel. The system was designed to generate data in near real time to evaluate rock behavior in roof strata and the onset of hazardous conditions as overburden stress was redistributed over working entries during gob formation. Computer simulations and in-mine evaluations were used to optimize instrument placement. A prototype packer assembly was designed and tested for installing sensitive instruments in a mine roof. This paper provides background information on the stress monitoring concept and focuses on the development of instrument placement techniques and the prototype packer assembly.

Water auditing and water efficient practices are evolving as the quantitative tools for water balance reporting in the mining and minerals processing sector. This paper was written to describe the process of water auditing in a gold mining environment. It will contribute towards building an appropriate water management framework for The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for sustainable resource processing (CSRP). The research assists with the assessment of water balances in mining and hydrometallurgical processes and provides, on the ground, steady-state data for ongoing probabilistic modeling underway at most of Newmont?s gold mine operations. Five Newmont case study mine sites including the Tanami Granites Goldmine are central to this PhD water project study. The function of the Tanami-Granites water audit exercise was to measure a controlled flow of various water quality types and set a framework to establish further research for water efficiencies and water conservation in mining.
