Plantwide control is the networking and coordination of individual control systems throughout the plant to enhance plant performance. The high level decision making involved in this coordination is used to achieve overall plant optimization. Decisions must be based on knowledge and information moving between control systems in both downstream and upstream directions and on management information systems containing financial data on the impact of coordinating actions. For example, certain quantitative descriptors of upstream operations are passed to the downstream control systems to prepare those operations for the feed material they will receive. Likewise, other quantitative descriptors of downstream operations are passed to upstream control systems to modify their output. In this case, setpoints are determined throughout the plant which maximize profitability, given current ore conditions and plant operating constraints. Due to the wide area coverage of this coordinator, it is forced to draw on several diverse information and knowledge bases. Such a coordinator, then, must rely on a combination of heuristic logic, model-based control and neural networks to unify the knowledge bases as well as to take advantage of their strengths and to compensate for deficiencies. A description is given of control systems for primary and secondary grinding and flotation at a large copper concentrator and how they are being integrated to achieve plantwide control. Financial implications are discussed.

The United States Steel Mining Co., Inc. recently experienced a major mine fire at the Cumberland Mine. This mine is located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. and is mining a high volatile bituminous coal seam (Pittsburgh Seam). The mine fire was success- fully controlled and extinguished without loss of life or serious injury to any miner or mine rescue personnel and finally reopened within 40 days of its inception.

An economic appraisal of the western phosphate industrial potentials made between 1945 and 1948 revealed possibilities for a considerable expansion in the production of high analysis phosphate fertilizer. The most significant facts are: (1) a rapidly increasing and a much larger potential market which might be reached from the western deposits, (2) the existence of large undeveloped deposits of phosphate rock, (3) potential energy from sulphuric acid, coal, or hydroelectric power in the general vicinity of the deposits. The challenge to the mining and metallurgical engineering profession is in the economical development of phosphate mines and in improving processes for utilization of the western ores and the recovery of byproducts to make the expanded western industry satisfactorily compete with the industry in the East and South in meeting the fertilizer needs of the Midwest and Far West.

China abounds with phosphate resources, but most of them are of old geological age, have high dolomite and other impurities, and are fine grained. Prior to beneficiation, fine grinding is usually required for liberating impurity minerals from phosphate. These deposits are perhaps the most difficult to treat phosphate ores in the world. In its 30-year campaign for efficient utilization of indigenous phosphate resources in China, the Lianyungang Design and Research Institute (CLDRI) has developed fine-particle flotation technology for beneficiation of such low-quality phosphate ores. The processes of direct flotation using L or S series depressants and carbonate flotation have been successfully applied on industrial scale with very satisfactory results. This paper introduces three phosphate beneficiation practices in China: the Jinping plant of Jiangsu province, the Dayukou plant of Hubei, and the Wengfu plant of Guizhou.

UNDER sulfur in coal, is usually understood that form of sulfur which is combined with iron and known as pyrite. It occurs in the form of halls, lenses, nodules, continuous layers, thin sheets, or flakes, both in horizontal planes and vertical cleavage fissures. But pyrites also occur as very fine microscopic particles, or nodules, disseminated through the compact coal. This form has had but very little consideration. Finally, there is sulfur in coal in an amicroscopic form (not visible with an ordinary microscope), probably combined with the organic matter that exists -in tile coal. This form has had considerable attention from a scientific standpoint, but has probably not been recognized enough on the economic side. One or the other, or both, of these two latter forms may comprise the larger part of the sulfur content of coal, especially after it has been washed or otherwise prepared for use.

The 1991 PACMANUS Expedition (Papua New Guinea-Australia-Canada in the Manus Basin) discovered a very large (approximately 800 x 350 m) actively-forming seafloor polymetallic sulfide 4 deposit in felsic volcanic rocks of the southeastern part of Manus Basin, a 60 km wide extensional zone of basalt, andesite and dacite volcanism in the New Britain back arc. The apparent neo-volcanic zone is a 30-km long, high standing, Y-shaped edifice, which we have named Pual Ridge ("Pual" means "fork" in a local PNG dialect). The PACMANUS deposit was found by deep-tow video on Pual Ridge along the flank and adjacent valley of a dacite lava dome. Videos show large spires, chimneys and mounds with abundant fauna. Only two small samples from an active chimney were recovered. Their mineralogy is a high temperature assemblage of chalcopyrite, bornite, tennantite, sphalerite or wurtzite and anhydrite. The bornite and tennantite and silver rich. Gold values for the two samples are 2 and 10 ppm. A pronounced methane and particulate plume was traced in the water column for 14 km to the northeast of the PACMANUS deposit. Other deposits of unknown size are nearby. The deposits of Pual Ridge and their surrounding volcanic rocks have close similarities to ancient massive sulfides of Archean to Phanerozoic age in Canada and Australia.

WITH imperfect instruments it is impossible to make accurate surveys; the results are inaccurate maps, with their attendant consequences. The design of the writer is to describe an improved form of tripod head, and certain defects in an English transit and a miners' dial, with the method taken to remedy the defects of the transit. When the present transit superseded the surveyor's compass, there was one special objection brought against it, and with some show of reason ; namely, that the tripod of the compass with its ball and socket motion, allowed a quicker levelling-up (and, consequently, more work) than was possible with the transit. To this objection it was replied, that the ball and socket would not allow the instrument to be levelled with the same degree of precision that could be attained with the levelling screws, and that if time was sacrificed greater accuracy was attained. Nevertheless, it is a well-known fact that in this country, and especially in England, the compass or miners' dial holds its ground solely from its rapid adjustment. Ever since the introduction of the transit, efforts have been made to give to this instrument the same facility of levelling possessed by the compass or dial, and the same means have been tried, i. e., a . ball and socket motion, since a modification of this in some form was the only method that would answer. The upper part of a transit is, however, much heavier than the corresponding parts of a compass, and, therefore, requires more binding power, which cannot be ob¬tained with an ordinary ball and socket joint. It has been a study with instrument-makers to combine the facility of these two tripods -the quickness of the ball and socket with the steadiness and accuracy of the screws; but in all attempts in this direction the ball and socket of the compass has been literally followed, the entire stability of the instrument depending upon the friction of the ball in its socket. Magotteaux, with the co-operation of Anglo Platinum, has erected a fully instrumented pilot plant at Frank concentrator, which is being used to study the influence of a variety of grinding parameters. This paper will discuss only the influence of mill speed and pulp density on secondary stage grinding. A Ø0.82 x1 m open circuit mill was used with reclaimed Merensky tailings as feed. The conclusions apply to this pilot plant but further investigation needs to be done to verify whether the same trends will be applicable to a large industrial-scale mill.

The East Texas area includes the northeast 38 counties of the state of Texas. It covers all, and extends beyond, the borders of what is commonly described as the East Texas Basin. It is one of the most important oil and gas-producing areas of the Mid-Continent Province. It includes four important oil fields—Van, East Texas, Cayuga and Long Lake— and the recent extension of Rodessa field into Cass County, Texas, may prove to be of major size. Four commercial gas fields are in this area— Bethany, Waskom, Cayuga and Long Lake. Up to January, 1936, all of the oil has been produced from the Upper Cretaceous formations, and most of that from the basal member, the Woodbine sand. Gas is produced from both the Upper and Lower Cretaceous formations. Development in Fields East Texas Field.—This field continued to dominate the drilling and production situation throughout the United States. There were 4036 wells completed in this field during 1935; that is, 365 more wells than were completed during 1934. Drilling activity was due to close spacing of wells and the addition of 10,000 acres to the field. The field is now drilled to a density of one well to 6½ acres, which is certainly more wells than necessary for economic production of the field. The close spacing of wells is due mostly to the type of proration, which is per well allowable based on a potential test, and does not take acreage into consideration, and also to the numerous small acreage tracts such as town lots and excess strips. The field now has 19,519 producing wells. The allowable production for the field during 1935 was 161,118,659 bbl.; estimated production, including illegal or "hot oil," was 174,200,150. The illegal production of oil gradually decreased throughout the year, until an estimated low was reached of 20,500 bbl. daily during the months of November and December. The price of oil remained at $1.00 per barrel throughout the year. As stated, about 10,000 acres were added to the field during the year, making a total of 128,000 productive acres. The status of the South African research and development programme on continuous ion exchange, which was aimed at the technical and economic assessment of that process for the recovery of uranium, is reviewed. The first phase of this programme, which has now been completed, involved development investigations on various pilot plants and culminated in the successful operation of a large-scale demonstration plant and the incorporation of the system in a number of new South African uranium plants. This account highlights the engineering aspects and the design fo the system, its adaptation to process flowsheets, and plans for future development.

Este artigo descreve um método experimental para encontrar valores de referência para testes que podem ser realizados na planta para a detecção de não conformidades em bombas de vácuo constituídas de ejetores a vapor e condensadores; tal método é composto por testes lógicos, sequenciais e não intrusivos. São fornecidas tabelas com os valores esperados das grandezas testadas, assim como diversas causas de redução de desempenho e de perda de função dos componentes.

El presente estudio surge del desafío de Compañía minera Antapaccay por procesar 40M t de mineral el año 2021, el 62% del material tendría como origen a minerales del Tajo Norte con valores de Axb de 25-35. En los años 2018 y 2019 los minerales del Tajo Norte tuvieron impacto en el tonelaje procesado debido a su bajo Axb que afectó los resultados de fragmentación en la voladura con 35.8% finos < 1 pulg. Se identificó que, para lograr el objetivo deseado, era necesario invertir en voladura, a fin de obtener mejoras en la fragmentación que conllevaría a incrementar el tratamiento de mineral en la planta y los rendimientos de los equipos de carguío.

The Pacific Northwest has an abundance of seamy, coarse granite and basalt rock. It is used primarily for road construction. Small quarries are opened nearest the road work to cut the cost of hauling. The crushers are portable. Small diameter holes 2 1/2" to 3 1/2" are placed close together to insure proper fragmentation. It is not unusual to load and shoot 100 to 700 holes 40' deep.

Xanthates (dithiocarbonates) have been the collector of choice for the flotation of sulfide minerals ever since the flotation process was developed and have been studied quite extensively. Recently, trithiocarbonates have been shown to be very effective in bulk sulfide bench-scale flotation. Fundamental analysis using electrochemical techniques have supported these bench-scale results, illustrating that the trithiocarbonate (TTC) collectors are more readily oxidized to their corresponding dithiolates, than the dithiocarbonate (DTC) collectors, as is shown in Figure 1.

Blasting is one of the lowest cost yet most critical parts of the mining cycle. This paper discusses the findings of an audit conducted on the blasting operation at an iron ore mine. The purpose of the audit was to review current blasting practices in order to identify opportunities for production/cost improvements. The approach taken in the audit was to observe general blasting practices, their related downstream effects and to compare current procedures to established best practices.

SDI has launched the Electronic Detonator Blasting System containing a set of robust serial protocol and hardware exhibiting great ease in field usability and deployment. Programmable delay time with increments of 1 ms up to 10s is possible with excellent timing accuracy. Bus length of up to 2 km containing 1600 EIMs can be employed. A key feature of the SDI Electronic Blasting System has been its high tolerance towards current leakage in the bus line.

G. Sherburne Rogers (written discussion*).—Mr. Kennedy&apos;s discussion1 of Mr. Matteson&apos;s paper takes the form of a criticism of my own comments2 on this paper. Mr. Kennedy is a respected authority on matters pertaining to the salt-dome oil fields, and his characterization of my "elaborate figures" as "worthless" is sufficiently candid and comprehensive to warrant a brief reply. My &apos;voluminous figures" consisted simply of a rough estimate of the minimum quantity of salt in the Humble dome, and a, calculation of the volume of sea water and of the volume of saturated brine which this salt would represent. Mr. Kennedy apparently interprets my remarks as opposing the idea that so,large a volume of salt could have been deposited from sea water, for he cites the area and thickness of European salt beds; but nothing was further from my intention. Given an arm of the sea, an arid climate, and evaporation under a hot sun, it is easy to conceive the formation of almost any thickness of bedded salt. I cited the figures in connection with Harris&apos; theory of the origin of salt domes, according to which the plugs were formed by the deposition of salt from ascending brine solutions, owing to the drop in temperature as they neared the surface. I pointed out the well known fact that the solubility of salt is only slightly affected by temperature, and that a drop of 80" C. would cause the deposition of less than one-tenth of the salt in solution; hence that more than ten times the volume of salt actually forming the plug must have been involved. If ten times the salt actually in sight be computed in terms of brine and multiplied by 50 or 60 to take into account all of the known salt domes, the resulting figure is so enormous that I am not at all so sure as Mr. Kennedy seems to be that the porous stratified rocks of eastern Texas and western Louisiana could contain or furnish so great a volume of migratory brine. Mr. Kennedy, however, does not dwell on drop in temperature as the cause of the precipitation, but contents himself with ascribing the whole process to lateral secretion. As I understand it, this implies that the connate waters and brines contained in the rocks migrated to the Gulf Coast region, and there deposited their salt at various loci of crystallization.
