The theoretical part of the paper presents an analysis of the conditions of Tl extraction from Pb using different extractants and determines the activity coefficients in liquid solutions of Pb-Tl and PbCl2-TlCl. The dependence of the solution activity coefficients upon the composition and temperature is presented in the form of Krupkowski and Krupkowski-Fitzner equations. An analysis and evaluation were made of the influence of the methods of PbCl2 introduction into a Pb-Tl solution upon the efficiency of the Tl extraction process under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. The analysis made it possible to formulate relevant equations describing the dynamics of the process of Tl extraction from Pb under stirring conditions as well as under the extractant injection into the liquid Pb-Tl solution conditions. In the part concerning experimental work, results are given for tests on the Tl extraction process from Pb-Tl liquid solutions of initial Tl content of approximately 0.05% mass using PbCl2 or, alternatively, Cl2(g) conducted in laboratorial scale. The tests made it possible to establish the influence of time, temperature, mass and the method of introducing the extractants into the liquid upon the level of Tl extraction from a Pb-Tl solution. Historically, geologic data has not been adequately considered in resource estimation. More recently, with the use of computers and sophisticated estimation algorithms and geostatistical justifications, geology has been downplayed further. Many reasons are given for not using geology including cost, time and irrelevance. None are valid. Boundaries defining mineral domains should be used in computer-generated resource estimates. Selected case histories show how the failure to honor geology has caused discrepancies in resource estimates of actual in-place resources. After-the-fact differences have included decreases in tonnage of up to 50% and increases up to 300%; partial to complete recategorization of material; and 50% decreases in grade. The costs of gathering and using geology are trivial compared to the potential consequences.

The basic concept of tunnel boring has not changed since the late 1800's. R. Stanley of Great Britain obtained a Canadian patent as early as December 1891. Mr. Stanley's machine was a device that consisted of a rotating wheel equipped with drag-type teeth; it had a means of thrusting the cutterhead against the face or heading; it had a means of clamping or gripping the machine in its bore; it had a means of collecting and depositing the cuttings into a screw-type conveyor located near the invert of the tunnel. It even had a means of varying the speed of the forward motion of the machine to suit different hardnesses of rock encountered. This description essentially fits the latest tunnel-boring machines being built today. In short, there has been no significant advance in the basic concept in 70 to 80 years. It may well be that no significant change can be expected for some time into the future. Today's machines, while still basic in concept, offer many advances aimed at faster tunneling. Among these are 1 ) improved cutters, 2) guidance and steering devices, 3) dust-control devices, and 4) mechanisms to aid in installing tunnel supports. CUTTERS The most important part of a hard-rock tunnel borer is the cutter. If the cutter can cut the rock, it is a boring machine. If the cutter cannot cut the rock, no other part of the machine can. When Jarva, Inc. decided to build a machine, the first problem was to find a good cutter. In our search, we looked at most of the cutters on the market. We selected Reed Drilling Tools' cutter because the design of their cutter was aimed at hard-rock tunneling. We feel that they build the best cutter available and provide the best possible service to their customers. As tunnel-boring machine design advanced, the transition from drag bits to roller bits was natural because harder formations required a roller bit, and it is the goal of all mole users to bore harder formations. In 1924, the Crescent Eagle Oil Co., while drilling the salt section of the Paradox formation in Grand County, Utah, encountered a salt that did not appear to be sodium chloride. This salt was analyzed and showed the presence of potash minerals, both sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgC12.6H2O). Because of the high potash content of the sample, there was considerable speculation: (I) as to whether the hole had been salted, and (2), if not, the extent, richness, and the depth at which the deposit occurred. The discovery caused a large amount of activity in the area. During the next few years, 68 potash prospecting permits were issued by the Government, 24 under the Act of 1917 and 44 under the Act of Feb. 7, 1927, each including about four sections of land. Several holes, all shallow, were drilled for potash. A number of holes were drilled for oil into the salt horizon and the cuttings collected at the oil wells were examined petrographically and chemically. The shallow test holes were not sufficiently deep to reach the potash horizon and revealed nothing of value, but several of the oil test holes gave some indication of where potash might be found. Location and Geology of Deposits The potassium and magnesium salts have been found in various places from the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks about seven miles west of Thompsons, in eastern Utah, to Cane Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River— a distance north and south of about 35 miles. In this locality, there appear to be five separate deposits: the Crescent Eagle area, which is in T. 22 S., R. 19 E.; the Salt Valley area, in the vicinity of the north-south line of T. 23 S., between R. 20 E. and R. 21 E.; the Seven Mile area, in the eastern part of T. 25 S., R. 20 E.; the Cane Creek area, on the Colorado River, in T. 26 S. and T. 27 S., R. 20 E. and R. 21 E.; and the Salt Wash area, in T. 22 S. and T. 23 S., R. 16 E. and R. 17 E. (Fig. I.) The Crescent Eagle and Salt Valley areas are in the Salt Valley anticline, some of the wells being in the fault graben and others outside. Structurally, the Salt Valley anticline is very complex, and can be described in general terms as a northwesterly plunging collapsed anticline about 15 miles long. In the Crescent Eagle area, the valley graben is about 1 1/2 mile wide and the salt probably forms a plug, the apex of which is in the vicinity of the Crescent Eagle well. Owing to the complex structure, there has been every opportunity for flowage in the salt to cause local thinning or thickening of beds. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados parciais de uma tese de doutorado desenvolvida no PPGE3M da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), com as Empresas Produtoras de Resíduos perigosos (EPRs) do setor metal mecânico da região de São Leopoldo/RS e suas Empresas Prestadoras de Serviços Ambientais (PSAs). A maioria das empresas PSAs iniciaram suas atividades com o apoio de grandes EPRs, principalmente, em função das suas necessidades de atender às exigências legais do órgão ambiental estadual, a Fundação Estadual de Proteção Ambiental (FEPAM), para a adequada disposição de resíduos perigosos. É importante salientar que não existe um diagnóstico sobre o setor de prestação de serviços ambientais no RS para resíduos industriais perigosos. Desta maneira, o objetivo deste trabalho foi o de identificar e priorizar as características da qualidade dos serviços ambientais de nove PSAs selecionados pelas próprias EPRs, durante o ano de 2013, por meio da adoção do Quality Function Deployment (QFD). O resultado piloto aponta a proatividade do setor nas características de empreendedorismo e inovação e no atendimento à legislação ambiental.

The use of pH control in solvent extraction circuits to aid in metal separation, concentration, and purification is an extremely useful technique applicable to a wide range of solutions. This paper discusses the technique in general and then gives examples of its use in extraction stages, wash and/or scrub stages, and in stripping stages, to effect the desired metal separation, concentration, and purification. Specific examples cited include Cu-Ni, Cu-Zn, and U-Mo separations using commercially available liquid ion exchange reagents.

Anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) have been widely used in the passive treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD), but their effectiveness has often been less than anticipated. Iron hydroxide often precipitates around limestone particles and inhibits neutralisation. To determine the conditions under which iron hydroxide precipitates, a small-scale laboratory ALD system was built to enable a detailed examination of the chemistry of iron within the drain. For one experiment, a mixture of limestone and quartz was introduced to the drain to assist in the determination of the key mechanism governing iron precipitation. Synthetic anaerobic acid mine drainage containing Fe2+ (~130 ppm), SO4 2- and H+ was pumped at a rate of 30 mL/min up a 90 cm tall, 15 cm diameter vertical column filled with limestone gravel of 98 per cent purity. Three sampling ports were fitted at equal intervals along the column; water was periodically extracted for analysis at the sampling ports over an 11-hour period. Experiments were run at influent pH levels of 2 and 4. Results show that acid neutralisation to pH greater than 6 occurred at the inflow end of the drain. The greatest amount of iron precipitation (19.5 per cent) also occurred in this area. The lack of iron precipitation on the quartz surfaces in the quartz/limestone mixture indicates that neutralisation is the key mechanism for the precipitation of iron hydroxide on limestone particles. A pe-pH stability diagram derived for the laboratory ALD system indicates that ALDs will not be effective for AMD with pH 2. Influent waters with pH 2 require a pe of -2 (Eh: -118.4 mV) to avoid Fe precipitation upon neutralisation. Influent waters of pH 4 require a pe between -2 and -4.

The Santa Fe train station and passenger rail platform were constructed in the downtown district of Fort Madison, Iowa, over a century ago. This landmark building and rail platform were in need of major renovations and rehabilitation in order to restore the site to a functioning railway train station. A multitude of key players from various public and private parties were involved in the design and construction of this project site. Part of the project consisted of constructing the passenger platform. The original design included helical piles to provide foundational support for the platform. Challenges occurred during construction due to the presence of an obstruction in the form of a poured concrete slab in the immediate area where the helical piles were to be installed. The contractor worked with the engineer of record and other consulting parties to value engineer the helical pile design and utilize self- drilling micropiles as a replacement to the specified helical pile system.

In flotation where a bulk flotation concentrate is produced or a gangue sulfide such as pyrite contaminates a concentrate, residual collector has to be removed from the sulfide surfaces to allow selective separation in a subsequent flotation step. Depending on the sulfide mineral, the main species that needs to be removed when using a xanthate collector is either a metal xanthate or dixanthogen. For the identification of surface species, specific solvents may be used to remove each species û metal xanthates are known to be soluble in acetone whilst dixanthogens are known to be soluble in non-polar solvents such as diethyl ether. Xanthates break down with time, temperature and pH into various decomposition products. The major decomposition product is dixanthogen which can aid flotation but other products such as perxanthate and carbon disulfide can have an adverse effect on flotation. Various analytical techniques can be employed to monitor the formation of decomposition products on the surface of the mineral and in solution. The best of these is ultraviolet spectroscopy as it has diagnostic peaks for decomposition product determination. In this work two approaches were taken to understand the relationship between the flotation of a chalcopyrite and pyrite from an ore containing these two minerals. One approach was to remove the xanthate species with an organic solvent and then use ultraviolet spectroscopy to determine the concentration of dissolved species. The second method involved measuring xanthate decomposition in solution by measuring the residual xanthate concentration using ultraviolet spectroscopy. These experiments confirmed the species adsorb at the surface of the mineral and how these species affect the recovery and grade of the valuable mineral. In both cases pH and temperature were varied and two xanthate collectors (SEX and PAX) were used to study these relationships. These relationships could be applied to industrial flotation systems and allow for more accurate determination of optimal xanthate dosage and hence save on reagent costs.

IN conjunction with a geological investigation of the silver-bearing veins at Contact Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, a survey was made with a Geiger-Müller counter of the gamma-ray emissions from the rocks in the vicinity of the mine workings. Discontinuous pitchblende veins have been encountered occasionally in the silver-bearing fissures, and the geophysical survey was undertaken with the hope that abnormally high gamma-ray intensities, if detected, might lead to larger and more continuous pitchblende discoveries. Before the instrument was used at Contact Lake, preliminary tests were made, first with laboratory specimens at Princeton University, and later over known pitchblende deposits at the Eldorado property, LaBine Point, N.W.T. The Geiger-Müller counter, as adapted for field use, is described; the technique of transporting and operating the instrument is outlined; and the general precautions to be observed are discussed. The results obtained at Great Bear Lake show that the instrument is capable of detecting not only a pitchblende ore shoot in a shear zone, but also the mildly radioactive "host rock" at a considerable distance from the ore body. Hence, use of the Geiger-Müller counter is urged, not just for the detailed search for an ore body in a shear zone, but for the detection of possible radioactive "host rocks" in large-scale reconnaissance surveys of unexplored regions made by prospectors and members of federal geological survey parties.

La unidad minera aurífera Santa Rosa, situada en el paraje Pampa Larco, Provincia Santiago de Chuco, región La Libertad, desarrolla un circuito de producción a través de COMARSA, donde se optimiza su proceso en forma dinámica. Así, en el caso puntual de Operaciones Mina-Equipos para el proceso de “carguío y acarreo”,el área de Tecnología de Información y Comunicaciones-TIC, presenta una alternativa de solución a la necesidad, desarrollando un sistema de control, cuya implementación no demanda mayor tiempo y es aplicable al control interno de la unidad con la dinámica que exige “tener la información en campo en tiempo real”. En ese sentido, el el presente trabajo señala el uso de moviles wireless en las pequeñas y medianas empresas mineras como el sistema “Personal Digital Assistant-PDA en control de carguío y acarreo”, que combina la tecnología Wireless en computadoras de mano con la característica de operación de COMARSA. El objetivo es capturar datos de cada frente de trabajo, de cada flota, registrar todo evento de interés que optimice y garantice la calidad de la operación ydel proceso, esta data en tiempo real debe entregar información al Jefe de guardia para el control respectivo.

La presente investigación refiere los aspectos de salubridad en las minas de Cercapuquio, a partir del ambiente de actividad del trabajador y su desarrollo fisiológico corporal. El yacimiento minero situado en el distrito de Chongos Alto, provincia de Huancayo, departamento de Junín, tiene una altura máxima de 2400 m.s.n.m, que influye en la formación biológica del hombre andino, puesto que tanto la altitud, temperatura y atmósfera son características morfométricas constituyentes de su fisiología. Sin embargo, según un estudio realizado a los hombres de trabajo provenientes de los departamentos de Junín (89%), Huancayo(7%) y Lima, se estableció que aunque hubieron desviaciones fisiológicas (volumen de sangre,capacidad respiratoria, etc,), las posiblidades de vida en la altitud para el hombre aclimatado son las mismas que para el hombre de mar. Sobre el resultado de estas bases, se evaluaron otras características de la patología del trabajador y los trazos posibles de morbilidad, logrando reducir los altos índices de la enfermedad. Las medidas adoptadas por la minera para proteger al personal empleado fueron: Foto-fluorografía de ingreso para el personal nuevo, instrucciones sobre la alimentación, higiene y prevención de enfermedad, llenado de fichas, control integral de partos respecto de las familias ubicadas en el asentamiento minero, difusión sobre profilaxis de enfermedades, vacunación total, esterelización del agua, etc. Respecto de los índices de morbilidad, se consideraron las patologías desarrolladas en el niño y recién nacido del trabajador, tales como las infecciones respiratorias, digestivas, carenciales, las cuales respondieron de forma óptima al uso de los tratamientos moderno-hidrosalinos, dietéticos y anti-infecciosos.

A utilização de compósitos de matriz polimérica reforçados com fibras naturais vem assumindo um papel importante no âmbito da engenharia de materiais. O baixo custo, a biodegradabilidade e a redução do peso especifico torna a utilização desse tipo de compósito bastante atrativa. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o desempenho da fibra de sisal como reforço do policarbonato visando uso utilização militar, especialmente em proteção balística. Antes da confecção dos corpos de prova, foi realizada a redução no tamanho de partícula do policarbonato e da fibra de sisal através de um moinho de facas, posteriormente dos corpos foram submetidos aos ensaios de tração e flexão.

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines-El Paso Mining and Milling Company cooperative research program at the Emerald Isle mine3 near Kingman, Ariz. This research program was directed toward developing in situ leaching methods for 200,000 tons of ore exposed in the pit bottom and also 1,500,000 tons of ore under 200 feet of overburden adjacent to the pit. A test area in the pit bottom containing 15,000 tons of ore was blasted and leached. The results of this leach test were encouraging, and the entire pit bottom was leached in-place for about 7 months. Two test blasts under 200 feet of overburden and extending to 290 feet were detonated in an area near the open pit. The results of these blasts were evaluated by core drilling and permeability measurements. An in situ leaching system was designed, but not implemented, to recover copper from the 1,500,000-ton area near the pit. The company decided to terminate operations at the Emerald Isle mine in November 1975.

Construction of the Cerro Colorado on-off leach pad in northern Chile required about 3 Mm2 (32.3 million sq ft) of fill over an area of about 600,000 m2 (6.5 million sq ft) in irregular terrain with relief of up to 40 m (130 ft). Earthwork construction was completed in about six months using mine waste, placed in 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) lifts with mine haul trucks. The lift thickness was reduced and the compactive effort increased in the upper 10 m (33 ft). This was done to develop a mat for additional resistance to possible differential settlements due to the modest density of the fill and dynamic (earthquake) conditions. A single 2-mm (80-mil) high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liner was used below the leach pads. This was protected from the loading and unloading equipment by bedding and cover systems. It consisted of screened sand, gravel and silt as the bedding and cover layers and a heel of screened gravel and primary crushed low-grade ore.

The sample under investigation contained approximately 16% BaSO, and was 80% -325 mesh. Established methods for floating barite did not produce concentrates of satisfactory grade or barite recovery because of low barite content and the presence of 6% calcite in the feed. By using a new long-chain sulfosuccinamate collector in combination with relatively high concentrations of sodium silicate, a barite concentrate was produced that would be acceptable as an oil-drilling mud using a simple rougher-cleaner circuit. No desliming of the fine-ground feed was necessary. Barite recovery was over 80% and the concentrate produced had a specific gravity higher than 4.3. During the course of the investigation, a procedure was developed to obtain semiquantitative determinations of barite, calcite, quartz, and feldspar in test samples using an infrared spectrophotometer. Samples were also analyzed in a thermobalance for determination of the calcite content. The use of these instruments made it possible to obtain quick mineralogical assays and proved to be of invaluable assistance in guiding the flotation testing.
