The introductory paper1 of this series described the potential behavior of tin in sodium carbonate and bicarbonate solutions whose pH ranged from 8.4 to 11.2 and demonstrated that significant and reproducible results could be obtained by proper attention to experimental technique. In examining the corrosion of tin under such conditions, it is desirable to know the effects of anions, aside from carbonate, that are likely to be present in commercial materials packaged in tin. Therefore, in this paper the potential behavior of tin in carbonate solutions to which sodium fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, nitrate, monobasic phos-phate, dichromate, perborate and acetate have been added will be dcscribed. For most of the additions, solutions containing 0.001 and 0.01 moles of the added material were studied. The experimental procedure was exactly the same as that described in the first paper; the pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicar-l,ol~ate as follows: pH 0.1 M NaHC0............................................ 8.4 2 parts 0.1 M XaHCOr, 1 pa.rt 0.1 M NaZCO?................. 9.5 1 part 0.1 M NaHCOs, 2 parts 0.1 M iVa.,C03. ................ 10.0 0.1 M Na2C0............................................. 11.2 The reagents used were all of C.P. grade. Este depósito porfirítico, inicialmente estuvo compuesto de microgranito y pórfido cuarcífero, los cuales son relacionados con los procesos de alteración y mineralización del depósito. Posteriormente, estos eventos intrusivos de postmineralización están representados por un enjambre do diques de composición decítiica, pórfido diorítico cuarcífero y andésitico. Short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral reflectance of the hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the footwall of the Hellyer Zn-Pb massive sulfide deposit was measured with a portable PIMATM infrared spectrometer. The Al-OH absorption band was used to derive information on the cation composition of white mica. The wavelength range of the Al-OH band from 2194 nm to 2222 nm reflects variation in the number of octahedral Al (Alvi) in white mica from 3.9 to 3.2 (based on four octahedral cations per formula). This Alvi range indicates a substantial compositional variation, covering most of the compositional region between muscovite (Alvi = 4.0) and phengite (Alvi = 3.0). Moreover, the spectral reflectance data show that the compositional variations of white mica are spatially related to the hydrothermal alteration zoning, such that the white mica of more phengitic composition tends to form in the main upflow fluid channels in the centre of the footwall alteration system. The results suggest that the octahedral Al content of white mica, which is spectrally definable by the wavelength of the Al-OH band using a field instrument such as the PIMATM, can be used to map fossil hydrothermal systems and potentially as vectors to mineralisation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) evaluated empirical equations that predict fragmentation from underground stope rounds. Controlled blasting is necessary for creating leaching stopes that maximize the recovery and minimize backbreak of the perimeter wall. This paper presents the fragmentation results from one of the three drop-raise blasts used to develop a reduced-scale cylindrical stope, 1.8 m in diameter and 6 m in height. The stope is located in the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine (Edgar Mine) in Idaho Springs, Colorado. This stope is part of a USBM research effort to determine the feasibility of incorporating in situ leaching of rubblized stopes into active underground metal and nonmetal mines.

As remaining gold deposits tend to become more refractory, some form of oxidative pre-treatment involving hydro or pyrometallurgy is necessary to maintain high metal recoveries. These pre-treatments include pressure oxidation, bio-leaching or roasting. In the past, the primary criterion for selection of oxidative pre-treatment relied mainly on the extent of gold recovery and relative economics. In this study, a different approach has been adopted, ie the quantitative determination of environmental performance of the oxidative pre-treatment processes bio-leaching, roasting and pressure oxidation to assess which had the least impact on the environment. By establishing the environmental performance of processes, waste minimisation can be addressed early in process selection. Using mass balances, the environmental theme method was applied to determine the performance, on the basis of gold treated, of the oxidative pre-treatment processes of selected plants. No clear trend was observed in the overall impacts of each of seven plants, with all but one of the environmental evaluation indices being of the same order of magnitude; this was probably due to masking effects arising from the large variations in feed composition, tonnage, and gold levels. Within each type of pre-oxidation plant however, certain trends were detectable. For instance, irrespective of plant size, ore composition or mineralogy, for the bio-leaching and pressure oxidation units, the general order of environmental impact from greatest to least was sequentially toxicity, acidification potential, depletion of resources, solid waste generation and greenhouse enhancement. For the roasters the acidification potential was the most significant. Determination of the environmental performance of the oxidative pre-treatment of a hypothetical ore in a plant of fixed tonnage was undertaken to remove the possible masking effects of variables associated with feeds of different mineralogy, gold tenor and tonnage. The bio-leaching process gave a marginally better performance than pressure oxidation, the roasting process the worst, although there was not a great difference between them. The decreasing order of contribution to the environmental index was acidification potential, toxicity, resource depletion, solid waste generation and greenhouse enhancement for bio-leaching and pressure oxidation; whereas it was acidification potential, solid waste generation, toxicity, resource depletion and greenhouse enhancement for roasting. Since the major contributor to the environmental index was the acidification potential, the environmental performance of treatment processes for the acidic effluents was calculated. After neutralisation of the net acid resulting from bio-oxidation and pressure oxidation, and the application of various scrubbing and product formation processes for the sulphur dioxide from the roasting process, it was shown that pressure oxidation gave a marginally better performance than bio-leaching, ahead of roasting. This study demonstrated the potential for the development of a predictive tool which could be used in determining the environmental performance, and thus the selection, optimisation, and improvement of pre-oxidation processes for least impact on the environment. These would allow operation of these processes within defined environmental performance limits and decisions regarding the desirability of processing various parts of a heterogeneous orebody to be made on environmental grounds.

The paper introduces the problems encountered in designing open stopes and briefly examines the factors that determine the final stope dimensions achieved after mining is completed. A case study is presented where monitoring of a stope was considered necessary due to the expected formation of a highly stressed crown pillar above the stope. The influence, on the mining approach adopted, of a yielding crown pillar is discussed. Monitoring and numerical modelling were used to develop an understanding of the behaviour of the particular stope as mining progressed. A comparison between the measured displacements and the numerical predictions at an interim stage of mining was carried out to assist in choosing the final sequences involved in completing the stope.

Rock fabric information is often available from drill hole information and bench face mapping. An approach is presented to predict fragment size distribution of blasted material from this information as well as that obtained after the blast. The following information available from a mineral exploration drilling program was used in the prediction of fragment size distribution: largest piece, percent particles larger than 1 inch and RQD. Photographs of bench faces were used to estimate the fragment size distribution. Fracture spacings were evaluated along a series of parallel lines on the photograph. Photographic techniques were also used to obtain the grain size distribution of blasted material. m is paper describes the methodologies applied in some detail.

El presente texto describe el origen, clasificación y la estructura de la geoestadística en el campo de la minería. Para ello, se describe primero la función de la estadística como materia de conocimiento económico y de estimación minera. Esta misma se divide en estadística variable dependiente y a su vez en Krigeage universal, estructura variable regionalizada y la morfología matemática. Mientras que la geoestadística tiene una función estructural más simple, donde su extensión es aplicable es a todo tipo de variable regionalizada como la ley en mineral, potencia o espesores, profundidad submarina, salinidad media en una zona, densidad de población, valor de gen un punto o en una zona, cantidad de lluvia en cm², etc.

Devido às novas tendências de design de carrocerias de automóveis, as peças pertencentes a estas carrocerias apresentam características de fabricações cada vez mais críticas, principalmente relacionadas ao processo de estampagem. Uma forma de atuar neste processo para evitar perdas de produtividade, principalmente com o rompimento do material, é atuar na lubricidade entre o material e o ferramental do equipamento. A aplicação do óleo lubrificante na bobina de aço é uma forma de atuar na lubricidade, mas devido à criticidade de estampagem que determinadas peças apresentam, somente o óleo lubrificante não é suficiente para este fim. Visando atender essa necessidade, a CSN e seus fornecedores desenvolveram um sistema de lubrificante para seus aços, conhecida como tecnologia de pré-fosfato. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar as vantagens fornecidas pelo aço pré-fosfatizado no que se refere a estampagem crítica de peças automotivas, bem como avaliar o seu impacto no processo de pintura automotiva. Como resultado verificou-se que a camada de pré-fosfato impactou na redução do coeficiente de atrito do aço zincado de forma suficiente para confecção de peças críticas de carrocerias de automóveis. Verificou-se também que o filme de pré-fosfato é totalmente removido na etapa de desengraxe do processo pintura automotivo, não prejudicando as etapas subseqüentes do processo: fosfatização e pintura.

Methane in coal constitutes a serious hazard in coal mining. Draining the methane in advance of mining can mitigate this hazard, conserve energy, and offer economic benefits. This Bureau of Mines report evaluates the Pittsburgh coalbed in Greene County, Pa., to determine if advance drainage is feasible. The gas content of virgin reserves in Greene County is estimated at 100 to 200 ft3/ton, a total of over 370 billion ft3 of gas in an area approximately 310 mi2. Because of the similarity to natural gas, drained coalbed gas could be recovered and added to pipeline supplies of natural gas. The value of conserved gas would offset the cost of drainage and extend energy resources.

THE Oaxaca coal fields, shown in Fig. 1, are located in the Alta Mixteca region in the states of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero. Known outcrops are scattered over 3125 square miles. It is probable that further exploration will reveal a more extensive area of deposits. The region is of great importance to Mexico, as at present the only sources of coal are the fields near the U. Surfactants and polymers are used in a number of processes such as flotation and flocculation. The structure of the adsorbed surfactant and polymer layers control the interfacial properties of the solid and hence an understanding of the structure of the adsorbed layers at the molecular level is essential. In this paper, a review of different spectroscopic techniques (fluorescence, electron spin resonance and Raman) used to characterize the adsorbed layers [in-situ] is presented. Information on the micropolarity, microfluidity and size of the surfactant aggregates was obtained and the growth of the adsorbed layer was followed. [In-situ] conformational states of polymers at the solid/liquid interface were determined for different pH values.
