ABSTRACT: Geological conditions associated with alpine environments in combination with high overburden in many tunnelling projects lead to squeezing behaviour. The main problems associated with such conditions include large deformations, overstressing of supports, and lack of face stability. In the past during Alpine tunnelling the problem of large displacements incompatible with rockbolt – shotcrete support systems have been solved by leaving gaps in the lining to accommodate excessive deformations. In the late nineties, yielding elements have been developed, which are integrated into the lining. The paper deals with the basic concept, the design and the application of that system, which has been successfully used in several Alpine tunnels. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die geologischen Verhältnisse in den Alpen führen bei großer Überlagerung häufig zu starken Deformationen während des Baues von Tunneln. Die großen Verformungen führen in vielen Fällen zu einer Überbeanspruchung des Ausbaues und Problemen mit der Ortsbruststabilität. Früher ist man dem Problem der Unverträglichkeit des Ausbaues mit den hohen Dehnungen durch Freilassen von Deformationschlitzen im Spritzbeton begegnet. Vor etwa 10 Jahren wurden duktile Stahlelemente entwickelt, welche in die Spritzbetonschale integriert werden. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Konzept, der Planung und der Ausführung. RÉSUMÉ: Les conditions géologiques dans les Alpes conduisent fréquemment lors d'un grand recouvrement à des déformations fortes pendant la construction des tunnels. Les grandes déformations conduisent dans beaucoup de cas à une surtension du revêtement et à des problèmes avec la stabilité de front de taille. On a fait face plus tôt au problème de l'incompatibilité du revêtement avec les extensions élevées par libérer des rainures dans le béton projeté. Il y a environ 10 ans, des éléments sidérurgiques ductiles qui sont intégrés dans le béton projeté ont été développés. La contribution s'occupe de concept, de planification et de mise en oeuvre.

In October last, I was call upon to examine a copper deposit in the South Mountain, near the Pennsylvania and Maryland boundary. The specimens shown me contained oxides and carbonates with native copper, and were similar to some that had been described to me some years ago as existing at the Luray Gap in Virginia. An examination of Rogers's Report on the Geology of Pennsylvania, led me to expect to see his so-called "Primal Formation," such as exists throughout the southeastern district of the State. I was therefore much surprised on arriving at the summit of the Western Maryland Railroad to find myself on familiar ground. Instead of the "Primal" as I had known it in Southeastern Pennsylvania, I soon decided that the rocks were identical with the ('Lake Superior Copper Formation." My visit was unfortunately a short one, —part of two days, and in that time I had to pass over a good many miles,—but I saw sufficient to convince me that instead of the Lake Superior Copper Formation being a local geological feature, it would have to be considered as a widely extended series of rocks. I was unable to even approximately estimate the thickness either of the trap zone or other members, schists and slates, of the series. In an article on the Copper 'Range of Michigan, prepared by C. P. Williams and myself in 1862, and published. in vol. xxxiv of the American Journal of Arts and Sciences, we endeavored to divide that range into zones, according to the character of the traps. This year the metal mining industry is in for some difficult decisions as the nation struggles to control inflationary pressures resulting from higher production costs and a money-squeeze policy. Re- clouding these problems will be campaign oratory as Congress seeks reelection. Charges will be hurled back and forth between a Republican White House and a Democratic Congress. Inflation and Vietnam will be the big one. Hut pollution i. coming on strong. President Nixon has formed a new Council on Environmental Quality although he already had named a similar unit within his Cabinet six months ago. Both are charged with bringing 1.0 bear all of the Federal Government's talents on the focal points of antipollution measures The biggest task will be to find out how many different "units" are currently mixed up in these efforts.

A theoretical analysis of a two-region solid-liquid flow system in horizontal pipes is presented, which considers a stationary bed of drill cuttings as a porous medium (-region) below of a two-phase dispersed flow (-region).The method of volume averaging was applied in this study to derive a rigorous mathematical model in which each variable is precisely defined. This model includes the volume-averaged transport equations for both the two-phase dispersed flow and the porous medium regions and terms from a macroscopic forces balance. The solution of the two-region model allowed evaluation of the behaviour of pressure gradient as a function of velocity, total volume fraction of cuttings and the relationship of the height of the stationary bed and pipe diameter. The solution is based on a backward finite difference explicit scheme. The simulated physical system is a pipe of 4.135 m in horizontal length and 0.0508 m in diameter. A one-dimensional, mesh-centred grid, consisting of 100 nodes, is used. The numerical results were compared with experimental data on slurry flows and a good agreement was found. A preliminary investigation was made to determine the time required to attain equilibrium within the equilibrium cell for this system. Experimental and smoothed data are presented for the solubility of ethane in water for temperatures of 100°, 160°, 220°, 280" and 340 °F at pressures to 10.000 psia. The minimum solubility phenomenon disappears at 10,000 psia within this temperature range. The paper describes activities undertaken for intensification of copper cathodes production in electro-refining plants of the Polish copper smelters: 'Legnica', `Glogów I' and `Glogów II'. In the 'Legnica' smelter, Outokumpu?Wenmec machine was used for preparation of copper anodes. Intensive studies were conducted in order to optimise copper electro-refining conditions. As the result of them, spacing between the electrodes was reduced to 99 mm, which enabled placing forty-one cathodes in each tank and increasing amperage from 10.8 to 13.0 kA. This modification resulted in the increase of electro-refining capacity to 103,000 tons/y. Intensification of the copper production at `Glogów II' by 18,000 tons/y became possible after development of new electro-refining procedures, including application of a regime of changes in electrolyte level during the cathode cycle, implementation of the changes in location of starting sheets relative to anodes, and in dimensions of the sheets, and modification in the shape of the anodes. Similar works have been performed at `Glogów I', which were concentrated mainly on defining of a new method of anodes preparation, modification of their geometry, determination of optimum current density, composition of a set of inhibitors and of a method of their introducing. The implemented solutions resulted in the increase in electro-refining capacity at `Glogów I' from 207,000 to 240,000 tons/y.

[Experiments were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on five types of simuated lunar rock (dacite, tholeiitic basalt, vesicular basalt, pumice, and uluth Gabbro) to study the effects of various simulated lunar environments n their strength and deformational properties. Specimens were tested in an ltrahigh vacuum (UHV) system at pressures ranging from atmospheric down to 0-11 torr and at temperatures of -130°, 20°, and 135° C. All tests were onducted with a servocontrolled testing machine. Rock specimens tested at 0° C in UHV exhibited significantly higher compressive strength and Young's odulus than those tested at 20° C in atmospheric pressure. The magnitudes f increase are related to the porosities and permeabilities of the rock pecimens; high porosity and permeability allow better outgassing and thus nprove surface cleanliness in UHV. The compressive strength generally ncreases but Young's modulus decreases as test environments change from 20° C i UHV to 135° C in UHV. No significant difference was observed in the iysical properties measured at 20° C in LTV and -130° C in UHV. Anisotropy i strength and Young's modulus exist both in UHV and at atmospheric condi¬'.ons with the same symmetry pattern. The orientations of the principal axes iy, however, change from the atmospheric to UHV condition. The results idicate that rock fragmentation in lunar environment will require more ergy than that at 20° C in atomospheric pressure.]

During the past 15 years in this country there have been few additions to the literature of lead smelting. After the consolidation of the principal smelting companies at the beginning of this period it became the policy of the larger company not to permit the publication of details in regard to many of its metallurgical processes. This led to similar action on the part of some of its competitors. The result, of course, was a decided decrease in the number of papers written upon the practical side of the subject. Even upon the theoretical side the contributions have been few. It would seem that the industry as a whole has suffered from this general unwillingness to exchange information. While it is true that a given company is entitled to the reward that may come from its own development of a new process, it is also true that a still greater reward might be the result of a free exchange of ideas with other plants. This principle has been recognized for a long time in other metallurgical industries, notably those engaged in the smelting of iron and the manufacture of steel. It is pleasing to note that the leading lead-smelting company has very recently decided to modify its policy of secrecy, and to permit the publication of papers covering some details of its metallurgical methods. The statement has been made that there has been but little progress in lead smelting during the period just referred to. This impression is due in part, no doubt, to the scarcity of papers written on the subject. 'There has been, it is true, some discussion of the new sintering processes, but with little reference to detail, and to the effect that blast roasting has had upon the industry as a whole. In spite of the prevailing belief, it may be said that lead smelting, in common with other metallurgical industries, has made steady and substantial progress. It is the purpose of the present paper to discuss briefly some features of the industry as it is now conducted, with special reference to the blast-furnace practice in the larger silver-lead smelting plants of the United States and Mexico.

The modern jig with a state-of-the-art control system is much more effective than its older version. This improved control system is used to modulate the amplitude and the frequency of the jig cycle. These two prime parameters are optimised with respect to feed characteristics for best jigging performance. Based on this understanding any jigging plant can be optimised. In addition to these established facts present study shows process efficiency improves further through optimisation of the feed quality.

Este trabalho descreve a implantação do sistema IBA na fábrica de tubos sem costura da VSB, a mais nova e mais automatizada do país. O trabalho destaca os bons resultados alcançados utilizando o IBA como ferramenta de manutenção e da inovadora visão do IBA na VSB, aonde rompeu as fronteiras da manutenção e atingiu as áreas de produção, desenvolvimento técnico e qualidade. A implementação do IBA na VSB teve grande relevância para a eficiência do comissionamento e start-up da fábrica de tubos. A capacidade de aquisição de dados em alta velocidade associada às diversas funcionalidades de análise de dados propiciaram meios de aprendizado sobre o processo, identificação rápida de problemas e difusão de conhecimento. Todavia, na VSB, a ferramenta extrapolou os limites da manutenção e alcançou funcionalidades também nas áreas de qualidade, produção e desenvolvimento técnico. Outra funcionalidade desenvolvida pela VSB no IBA foi a capacidade de analisar oscilações de variáveis de processo ao longo do comprimento dos tubos produzidos e não só ao longo do tempo, como usualmente é feito. A capacidade do IBA PDA na aquisição rápida de dados possibilitou fazer ajustes finos nos tempos de ciclo de cada equipamento, deixando a medição mais elaborada e precisa, auxiliando a identificação dos locais que são gargalos de produção. A possibilidade de visualizar, com resolução de milissegundos, os eventos que ocorrem ao longo do tempo, ajudou a reduzir o tempo de análise e correção de falhas.

The usual concurrence in time and space of intrusive igneous activity, favorable structural disturbance and mineralization, which is so manifest in the mineralized district necessarily indicates a close interrelationship between these events. Evaluation of available evidence leads to the recognition that an appreciable time interval exists between the emplacement of the igneous intrusive and the formation of associated ore deposits. During this interval known portions of the intrusive are completely solidified, highly differentiated magma facies are injected as dikes, and important faulting occurs, which may fracture and shatter the solidified intrusive body. The highly differentiated dike types could only have originated in some deep portion of an underlying plutonic body that had reached an advanced stage of magmatic differentiation. Appearing after these dikes, the mineralizing solutions may likewise be presumed to have originated at great depth. Certainly no source for these solutions can be found in near-by portions of the intrusive igneous body. The association of igneous intrusives and clustering ore deposits must be recognized as resulting from structural control. The emplacemerit and the subsequent solidification and cooling of the intrusive set in operation forces that are responsible for the favorable structural disturbances that control the mineralized district. The emplacement of the body of fluid magma weakens the crustal rocks to the extent that failure due to strains originally present in the rock body may occur. Faulting of any type and of any magnitude may be the result. Subsequently, owing to the change of state from fluid magma to crystalline granitic rock, volume decreases approximating 10 Per cent may Occur, with resultant shrinkage and collapse within the rock body. Following solidification, thermal contraction, induced by cooling of the rock body, causes a further volume reduction of 6 per cent. This thermal contraction, extending over a lengthy period of time, results in a succession of minor fault movements. These small fault movements, occurring progressively throughout the period of mineralization, are responsible for maintaining the permeability of the rock body, without which access of the mineralizing solutions and the formation of the ore deposits of the mineralized district would be impossible. Introduction A proper understanding of the causes that have localized our mineralized districts should be of considerable value to geologist and engineer alike. under current conditions the known ore reserves of productive mining camps are being rapidly depleted. Although ore of the future will be derived in part from deposits now known and from Ore bodies that are still to be discovered within the limits of productive mining districts, in part at least it must come from mineralized districts whose existence or importance yet remain to be recognized. The mining geologist is thus faced with two problems of paramount importance: (I) the location of new ore bodies within known mineralized areas and (2) the location of new mineralized districts within whose confines, previously unknown, valuable Ore deposits may occur. In 1978, Anschutz Mining Corp. began efforts to develop the Madison Cobalt Project in southeast Missouri. Preliminary metallurgical studies indicated that intermediate grade cobalt products, suitable for shipment to existing refineries, could be recovered from the sulfide mineralization of the ore body. However, tolling and freight charges were significant, as the refineries were located outside the US. These refineries would not satisfy the goal of strategically insulated production of superalloy-grade cobalt. The acquisition of proven, readily available refinery technologies was then evaluated. However, licensing costs were substantial and the "proven" technologies were not directly applicable to the unique chemistry of Madison materials. Faced with these challenges, Anschutz, in conjunction with the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute, embarked on an effort to develop a sulfate-based separation and refining process. CSMRI performed bench-scale and continuous pilot experiments on solutions generated through other pilot campaigns conducted by Lurgi, Hazen Research, and Sherritt Gordon. The results indicated that cobalt could be selectively extracted from sulfate media using a new generation of organophosphates. The solvent extraction system produced a solution suitable for electrolysis of high-purity cobalt. Preliminary cost studies indicated the novel process was competitive with other refinery systems. Plans to develop the detailed engineering-design information required to commercialize the process were abandoned when the price of cobalt collapsed to less than $17.64/kg ($8.00 per lb).

In December 2013, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) completed the widening of the eastbound tunnel on Interstate 70 (I-70) from two lanes to three. Work on the westbound tunnel began earlier this year and is scheduled for completion in December. The Twin Tunnels project is located in the mountains about 55 km (35 miles) west of Denver. They were bored during the 1960s when I-70 was being built and became the main access to Colorado?s growing number of ski areas and the state?s Western Slope. Throughout the decades following their construction, traffic on I-70 continued to increase and now the tunnels have a major bottleneck. Com-mutes to and from the mountain resorts, particularly on weekends, have become long and slow. Adding a third lane through the tunnels will help alleviate the congestion. Once the eastbound tunnel was completed late last year, CDOT authorized the funding to begin work on the westbound side. That made economic sense, as the equipment used on the eastbound tunnel needed to only be shifted across I-70 to begin work on the westbound side, rather than removing it in December and bringing it back in March when construction began on the westbound tunnel. Work on the westbound tunnel uses essentially the methods that were used on the eastbound tunnel ? removal of the existing concrete lining and using drill-and-blast methods for tunneling widening. The main difference between the two tunnels is that the westbound side requires more blasting on both ends to widen I-70 to three lanes.

Provide d comprehensive source of up-to-date information about technology for revegetating coal mined lands. Approach A great deal of activity and research in the field of coal mine revegetation has been reported in technical literature, both before and after the passage of Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Ruclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). This information is widely scattered throughout books, scientific journals, periodicals, Government reports, and other sources, and there has been a need to develop a method of accessing it quickly and efficiently. At the request of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement which promulgates and enforces regulations implementing the act, the Bureau of Mines has prepared a document that identifies literature relevant to coal mine revegetation. Most of the literature available on this subject has been published during the past 15 years. To tap this reservoir of information, 14 data bases were accessed from DIALOG SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information) Service using three keyword combinations (surface mining and reclamation, strip mining and reclamation, and revegetation). This procedure generated over 7,000 listings. The U.S. Department of Energy's ENERGY data base was selected from the 14 DIALOG bases, both for its large number of listings and for its broad coverage of literature. This data base contains all the unclassified information that passes through the Technical Information Center of the Department of Energy, including reports, journal articles, conferences, patents, books, monographs, theses, and engineering materials relating to energy development.

Belt turnovers are commonly used in conveyors to rotate the belt so that the clean side of the belt contacts the return idlers. The belt turnover length has traditionally been sized on only the twisting stresses. However, belt turnovers are also subjected to bending stresses due to the weight of the belt. Although bending stresses have in the past been ignored, these stresses are significant and should not be neglected. This paper quantifies and presents a method for calculated twisting and bending stresses and also the belt sag.
