Development in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1943 resulted in the discovery of 11 new fields as compared with 12 discovered in the same area during I942. Of the 11 new fields, eight are classed as oil and/or condensate and three as gas fields. In addition to the new discoveries, several more or less important new horizons and extensions were encountered in some of the older fields, as noted in the text under the heading "New Pays and Extensions.'' Drilling During the year, 418 wells were drilled, as compared with 356 drilled during 1942. Of these, 323 were field wells, of which 188 produced oil, 21 were gas wells and 114 were dry holes. The remaining 95 viere wildcats, 12 of which produced oil, 4 produced gas and 79 dry holes. Distribution of themwildcats with respect to the various trends may be summarized as follows: over the 91,340,492 bbl. produced in the same area during 1942. The production statistics in the text and the accompanying tables include condensate or distillate as oil production, because many Gulf Coast fields produce oils with a wide variation of specific gravities, all of which are commingled in pipe lines. Table 3 shows by counties all of the drilling and production" data applicable to this particular area. Outstanding Fields of 1943 The Upper Texas Gulf Coast covered in this report has 178 more or less active oil and gas fields, including the 1943 discoveries. Of these Table 4 lists those that were most important from the standpoint of production. Each of these fields pro duced in excess of one million barrels of oil during 1943. Some of the interesting facts to be noted from this list of some 26 oil fields are: (I) four of the fields— namely, Conroe, Hastings, Friendswood and Thompson—each produced more than 10 million barrels during 1943, whcrcas Conroe and Hastings were the only fields that produced 10 million barrels during 1942; (2) some of the older fields (discovered prior to 1920), such as Barbers Hill, West Columbia, and Hull, are still producing in excess of one million barrels annually; (3) some of the fields more than doubled their 1942 production—e.g., Anahuac and Friendswood. Cable bolts are used as a means of rock support around underground excavations in many mines across Canada and around the world. A substantial body of research on cable bolting was conducted at a number of Canadian universities and mines from the mid-1980s through the 1990s. Since then, research into selected areas of cable bolting practice has continued in Canada. The research has focussed on cable bolt instrumentation and on the inclusion of cable bolts in empirical stope design techniques. A review of cable bolting practice is now warranted at many mines. It has been five years since the completion of the previous substantial body of Canadian academic research and the associated advancement in understanding of cable bolt design, implementation and verification practice. Attempts were made at that time to transfer the new design procedures and performance assessment technologies to mine-site personnel. In some cases, this was effective, and ground control personnel continue to improve on their cable bolting practice at each specific mine site. However, at other sites, experienced people have moved on, and the new, less experienced personnel do not have access to the training or technical resources required to improve their understanding of the subject. In other cases, the technology was not transferred effectively to practitioners, with the result that substantial improvements can be made to the cable bolting practice at those mines. Guidelines for auditing cable bolting practice are provided in this paper. The guidelines include a discussion of the objectives of the audit, suggestions for audit procedure and a summary of the possible outcomes of a cable bolt audit. The objectives of an audit might include assessing the reasons for unexpected cable bolt failures, evaluating the quality of the installation procedures, quantifying the efficiency of the cable bolt system and assessing training requirements and procedures. A cable bolt audit should include consideration of all aspects of the cable bolting cycle, including the design, implementation and verification phases of the operation. At the end of the audit, a ranking should be assigned to the components of the cycle. The ranking system can then be used to identify items that require immediate attention, others that could be improved and others that are adequate. Following completion of a cable bolt audit, increased confidence in the support system and its application is generally, found, along with the potential for cost savings in many cases.

"The first record of a kimberlite found in Canada (1946) was the identification of thin dykes intersected while drilling for gold in Michaud Township, Ontario.Sampling of the Munro Esker (1964) in the Kirkland Lake area, Ontario, by the Geological Survey of Canada identified the occurrence of detrital grains of pyrope garnets along a length of 35 km of the 113 km tested. A search for the source of the garnets resulted in the identification (1968) of a narrow subsurface kimberlite dyke in the Upper Canada Mine. This discovery resulted in a staking rush. Unfortunately, subsequent work did not identify the source of the kimberlite indicator minerals.During 1978 the Ontario Geological Survey started a multi-discipline study of 29 townships (2560 krn2) in the Kirkland Lake area, to encourage exploration for gold, base metals, and kimberlites. Back-hoe sampling (1979 to 1982), where the overburden was thin, and reverse circulation drilling, in areas of thicker drift, yielded samples of the till. These were analyzed for several elements and a mineralogical identification of the heavy minerals was completed. Pyrope and chrome diopside grains were identified.Studies of the Pleistocene geology indicated only the most recent direction (167 degrees) of ice advance (Matheson) and the associated deposits, out of a possible three advances known to occur in the general region straddling the Ontario-Quebec boundary, is present in the immediate area of Kirkland Lake. Contouring the distribution of pyrope grains (1990) showed a concentration centered over an area of 616 km2 extending down-ice from Gauthier Township. This included a smaller area containing chrome diopside grains. Kimberlite boulders were identified (1981) in gravel pits on the Munro and Misema River Eskers located within this anomalous area. The next step would be to use the airborne geophysical data to locate the kimberlite pipes which yielded the indicator minerals and boulders. The source area is likely to be in the northern half of the Ontario Geological Survey study area."

Although efforts towards producing a `total quality rockfill product' have allowed cemented rockfill costs to be reduced considerably, there is still tremendous potential for further cost reductions. Cemented rockfill costs range from approximately $7 to $12 (US) per tonne of fill placed. Approximately 50 per cent of the rockfill costs are associated with cement costs. A large portion of the remaining 50 per cent is associated with labour and materials handling costs. Several Canadian underground mines utilise haulage trucks and/or conventional belt conveyors to distribute the rockfill. However, due to the restrictive nature of the underground environment, these current materials handling systems have limitations (ie spillage from trucks, dust from conveyors). The Sicon conveyor system (developed in Sweden) has considerable potential for replacing these current methods. The Sicon conveyor utilises a revolutionary approach - the conveyor belt is folded over upon itself (forming a tear drop shape) so that the transported material is completely encased within the belt. The Sicon conveyor's ability to negotiate very tight comers (without transfer points) makes the conveyor very appealing for underground mining applications. An analysis comparing the pros and cons associated with the Sicon conveyor system versus conventional materials handling systems will be presented in this paper.

During an investigation of the copper-rich portion of the copper-silicon-iron system as part of an extensive research program on P.M.G. alloys, which was begun in 1937 in the research laboratory of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, it became apparent that the binary copper-silicon system below 7 per cent Si needed revision, therefore an investigation was undertaken. Both X-ray methods and microscopic technique were employed. Despite the many investigations that have the clarification of this system as their object, no two successive reports on the system have agreed in placement of the alpha-phase solubility limit, and uncertainty about the secondary phase first to appear has been voiced several times.3,4,5 It was therefore not surprising, when T. Isawa's6 and M. Okamoto's7 works were reported at the time we were finishing up our experimental work, to find essential disagreement between their results and ours. But when C. 5. Smith's latest work on the copper-silicon systema was published just as we were finishing our laboratory report, it was indeed gratifying to find that the latter's diagram and ours checked in all essential features, except the temperature of the peritectoid line above 830" C. Many attempts were made to retain the beta phase during the present investigation, but none was successful. Isawa,6 however, reports that he has been able to obtain X-ray photograms of the beta phase. The structure, he states, is body-centcrcd cubic with a lattiee constant of 2.848 ,&. at 7.2 per cent Si. Okamoto7 and Smith8 both use the designation Kappa for the hexagonal phase, and to avoid confusion this designation will he adhered to in the present paper. Preparation of Samples The alloys were melted in vacuum in a high-frequency furnace. from copper cathodes containing 99.98 per cent Cu, and specially refined silicon supplied by The Electro Metallurgical Co. Polish coal mines are well equipped with methane monitoring systems,nevertheless the worsening conditions force a continuous impro- vement in the field of environmental monitoring. Application of modern electronic components make it possible to design the new modular telemonitoring system incorporating the best features of the older systems,widely employed in Polish collieries, eliminating their weak points. Several new sensors and portable instru- ments for methane monitoring and early fire detection have been developed and tested in mining conditions.

Since 1978, new tax measures affecting the mining sector have been relatively favourable, evidencing a moderately enhanced government awareness and sensitivity towards the industry's concerns. Today, although the industry continues to face a complex and sometimes capricious tax system, a wide range of tax provisions offer some excellent opportunities to the industry. This paper examines the basic features of the present tax environment, discusses some of the more important changes of recent years, and comments on the outlook for mining taxation in Canada.

The sixth underground pumped powerhouse cavern is under construction now in Korea. For the stability analysis of the five underground powerhouses, finite element method was used. For this analysis, in-situ rock stresses were measured by overcoring method and horizontal to vertical stress ratio was calculated 1.07-1.32 at four sites. Rock mass strength and elasticity were assumed from intact rock properties. The ratio of elasticity of rock mass was 0.16-0.55 of intact rock core elasticity. In general, elasto-plasticity with Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion was applied and the input cohesion and internal friction angle were approximately 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 of intact rock strength parameters, respectively. THE experiments described in this paper constitute the preliminary work of an investigation outlined to determine the combined effects of steam and temperature on the endurance properties of certain steels. Essentially of a fundamental nature, it was found necessary, in order to make the investigation comprehensive, to test materials treated to give a wide range of properties. The work reported deals chiefly with nickel steel with one series of tests including nitriding steel. Such a study involves numerous variables, and requires an endurance-testing machine of rather special design.

Mining and petroleum continue to be the two most vita components of our nation's development, says Sir Julius Char in the Australian Journal of Mining (Nov-Dec 1996). In fact the} account for 71.6% of export earnings, and 21.2% of Gros; Domestic Product in Papua New Guinea. The Misima and Porger, Mines, along with the Kutubu oil project, have essentially rescues PNG's economic viability since the loss of income from Panguna Though the industry cannot create employment in the manner o. intensive industries such as agriculture, it does provid( opportunities to local communities in terms of jobs, financia compensation, and infrastructure. Many ventures take many years and enormous capital investment to set up. There are three phases: exploration, feasibility, an( operations. The operations phase sees a massive development o infrastructure, or the actual `building' of the mine. For mining companies to commit to such lengthy time frames and high level: of investment, without returns, requires confidence and a degree of commitment from government on a number of levels - legislative stability, monitoring social development, and the provision o social infrastructure.

Long term stability studies were conducted on four variants of LaNi5; 10,000 hydriding/dehydriding cycles were used to evaluate their suitability for a metal hydride cooling system. Thermodynamic and structural studies were conducted to determine changes in these materials during cycling test period. The hydrogen sorption properties of LaNi5.2, and Lao 9Gd0.1Ni5 and LaNi4.75In0.27 were seriously degraded during the tests but the LaNi4.8Sn0.22 hydride was virtually unaffected. Hydride isotherms were measured at the beginning and at intervals through out the test period to observe the nature and extent of damage degradation in the sorption properties. X-ray diffraction studies of the alloys (LaNi5.2, LaO.9Gd0.1Ni5 LaNi4 8Sn0.22) and their respective hydride, before and after test, provided insight with regards to the observed changes in the hydride properties. Electron microscopic studies were also conducted to evaluate the changes in particle sizes.

Renison Mine was developed as the first all diesel mine in Australia. The foresight of the early planners in committing the Mine to Decline access has paid dividends in the past two decades with Renison Mine establishing itself as one of the most productive underground mines in the world. The excellent productivity has also resulted from the development of mining equipment technology, both on the part of the equipment suppliers and through the coordination of the Mining, Automotive and Technical Design Sections at Renison Mine. Constant improvements in truck and loader design, the design of specific equipment to carry out specialized tasks such as installation of services, scaling and ground support and the conversion to electrically powered equipment have been ongoing at Renison. Currently, larger scale trucks are being investigated for ore and waste haulage due to increased haulage distances and production requirements. It appears as though an articulated low profile truck of around 50 tonnes capacity may provide the short term solution based on the performance data available.

Blasters with the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) have developed techniques for opening access holes in floating sea-ice where the use of conventional drilling equipment is impractical. The blasting techniques have proven successful in sea-ice ranging from 8 to 15 feet thick. Previous published work has treated in detail blasting holes in floating ice from 2 to 6 feet thick.

In recent years a large number of Horizontal Belt Filters have been installed in the Australian mining and chemical industries. This paper deals briefly with the general background and advantages leading to the selection of this type of filter. Several different applications are described and particular reference is given to the simplification of the fines treatment circuit at the South Bulli Coal Washery.

The effect of slag composition on lead losses to slags and on the behavior of associated accessory elements in lead blast furnace smelting has been studied by the Bureau of Mines. Equilibrations of 30 g of lead and synthetic slag doped with Cu, In, TI, and Sb at 1,200° C in CO-C02 atmospheres revealed the importance of the FeO:Si02 ratio and the basicity ratio, (CaO+MgO):SiO2, of the slag. Lead losses to slags increased with an increasing FeO:Si02 ratio and decreased with an in-creasing basicity ratio. Copper and indium distribution coefficients, [Lx =] increased from 15 at the lower basicity ratios to near 60 at higher basicity ratios. LTI values increased from 20 to 150 as slag basicity increased. Lcu, Lin, and LTI were relatively in-dependent of the FeO:Si02 ratio, but increased with greater amounts of accessory elements in the system. Antimony distribution alone was shown to be strongly affected by FeO:Si02 ratio, although data were scattered. LSb values ranged from 20 to 800 and decreased sharply with increasing FeO:Si02 ratios. The basicity ratio and the level of accessory element load did not have any noticeable effect on LSb.
