Meaningful and real time environmental monitoring of marine tailings placement is a clear sign of deeper commitment to the people of PNG in regard to impacts of mining on coastal environment and marine life. Today daily mine wastes and tailings are increasingly being delivered to the seabed offshore of project sites in Misima and Lihir islands. Ramu and Simberi mining projects also plan to dispose tailings out at deep sea. As tailings leave the tailings pipe and come out into the seabed, concentrations of the cations and other potential harmful particles in the tailings stream need to be quantifiably monitored each day during the life of the refinery. For continuous monitoring of the tailing?s true chemical characteristics submarine cables connected with ocean floor observation systems consisting of deep-sea underwater video, and cation sensors and electrodes will be laid. Power transport to the tailings site and data transfer from the tailings site will be via opto-electric cables. Various data center instruments will record and manage the collected data. Observation data will be transferred in real time to stake holder?s data centers via a dedicated line from on-land stations, and then distributed to company offices and government establishments. Japan Marine Science and Technology Center, Telikom PNG, and Australian Institute of Marine Sciences will be the key advisers in this project. The main role of the observatories is to monitor and collect background seabed geochemical data prior to start of tailings disposal, during tailings disposal period, and after the life of the refinery.

"New techniques in monitoring surveys and new methods in the analysis and prediction of ground subsidence are being developed in the Department of Surveying Engineering at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). The new surveying techniques include a telemetry monitoring system developed at UNB in cooperation with CANMET, and use of the satellite Global Positioning System. A generalized approach to the analysis of deformation surveys has been developed which permits an integrated analysis of geodetic and geotechnical measurements in geometrical modelling of ground subsidence. A computer program, FEMMA, has been developed for the elastic and non-linear elastic analysis and the deterministic prediction of deformations using the finite element method.IntroductionResearch and development of new monitoring techniques and new methods in the analysis and prediction of ground subsidence in mining areas is an integral part of a broad research program on deformation surveys which is being carried out in the Department of Surveying Engineering at the University of New Brunswick.The research concentrates on:developmentof a general method for predicting deformations with an emphasis on the use of the non-linear elastic finite element analysis; development of a generalized approach to the geometrical analysis of deformation surveys with an integration of geodetic and geotechnical measurements; and development of new monitoring techniques with an emphasis on continuous data acquisition and application of new space techniques such as the satellite Global Positioning System (GPS).This paper gives a brief report on the progress and recent developments within the above program."

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rockfall hazard. Rockfalls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings have an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orientating the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and offsetting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

A mining operation in Zimbabwe produces a pyritic gold concentrate that requires oxidative pretreatment prior to cyanidation in order to liberate 80 percent of the gold values. Bio- oxidation offered the potential of increased gold recovery and was considered to be an economically advantageous alternative to the existing practice of roasting the concentrate. Based on bench- scale test work, a small bio-oxidation plant, capable of processing approximately 50 percent of the concentrator production, was installed at the mine to evaluate this approach. The plant included two 57 m3 bioreactors in series and the ancillary equipment needed to prepare the feed concentrate, to wash the leached residue prior to cyanidation, and to neutralize the waste liquor. The plant was operated for a year-and-a-half, and the conditions needed to achieve a 90 percent liberation of gold values were determined. A number of critical technical problems were encountered, and many were resolved on-site. Others have been addressed since the pilot plant was moth-balled in June 1988. Valuable insight was gained from the operation of the pilot plant, which has provided useful guidance for continued process and equipment improvement.

In this paper the effect of the ratio of grinding and grindable size classes (ore lumps, particles and grains) and the guantity of intermediate size classes in the feed of the primary wet autogenous grinding "Cascade" mill is studied and the features of the influence of these factors on the mill capacity are shown. On the basis of the experimental data from Lebedinsky mineral processing plant, where magnetite guartzites are processed, a coefficient of the "total ratio of size classes" in the feed of 9x3 m "Cascade" mill was estimated. It helps to get an evaluation of the effect of ore size classes ratio in mill media on the mill capacity and to work out some ways for its optimization in closed or semiclosed technological circuites of primary autogenous grinding. The operation of the specific energy effects for some intermediate size classes, removed from the mill as circulating load, is proposed to improve its efficiency before regrinding in "Cascade" mill and decrease negative influence of such classes accumulation in the mill media.

World gold production figures and the processes used for gold production indicate a high dependence on both cyanide leaching and carbon adsorption metallurgies. Problems associated with the use of carbon in the treatment of refractory ores as well as economic and environmental considerations associated with the use of cyanide point to the advantages that can be realized through the use of more efficient gold adsorption media and with cyanide recovery. We have developed a process termed AurosaveTM-1 which provides a number of advantages through the use of a new synthetic robust gold adsorption medium, termed Vitrokele TM V-911. This process allows further recovery of gold from a variety of ores and allows for a simplified process for use not involving thermal regeneration or high pressure elution. We have also developed a cyanide recovery process termed Cyanosave ™ which uses Vitrokele TM V-911 and allows efficient recovery of cyanides from decants or tailings and re-use of recovered cyanide. This obviates the high chemical expenses for cyanide destruction where environmental issues require such water and tailings management.

CRACKS which form in lead exposed to fluctuating stress frequently follow a rectangular pattern. It is well known that under ordinary atmospheric conditions these cracks are intercrystalline. On the other hand after fabrication the crystal grains in lead are in general irregular polygons. The observed facts appear to be mutually contradictory. Re-examination of some lead failures has confirmed that the rectangular cracks are intercrystal- line. It follows therefore that under fluctuating stress some of the grains lose their irregular outlines and become approximately regular polygons of cubic type. G. R. Gohn and W. C. Ellis* suggest that this is due to recrystallization during the life of the part, in such a way that the new grain boundaries are aligned at 45 deg to the longitudinal strain prior to the formation of the fatigue crack. This study monitored longwall mining subsidence profiles over three panels that were mined beneath state highways in southeastern Ohio. The average maximum subsidence was 1.07 m (3.5 ft). The average maximum compressive strain recorded was 0.008 mm/mm. Three predictive methods for the determination of displacements and strains were compared: the National Coal Board (NCB) graphical method, the profile method with empirical constants determined for southeastern Ohio, and a finite element excavation program. Excellent subsidence agreement was found with the profile method, and reasonable strain agreement was determined with the finite element program.

RECENT lead-smelting techniques have tended toward use of high-grade concentrates with minimum amounts of flu, accompanied by profitable employment of roast reaction.1-5 In order to better understand these smelting processes, thermodynamical calculations have been carried out on the Pb-S-0 system, and the results obtained have been presented in isothermal reaction diagrams in which log Ps, and logPo, were the axes. The diagram thus constructed seems to be more convenient to grasp the equilibrium aspect than those published hitherto.6-8

The paper describes the use of the Electric Pilot in the Permian Basin for making permeability surveys of wells and for the selective acidization of wells. A general summary of the information obtained from the many permeability surveys run in this area is given, and the possible application of this information to reservoir control problems is discussed. The application of the Electric Pilot on specific wells, involving well completion, acidizing and workover operations is also included. Introduction The Electric pilot is a comparatively new tool in oil-producing areas. From the beginning, the possibilities of this new service caught the imagination of many of the oil operators and acidizing engineers. Through the continued and ever increasing use of the pilot during the past year, and the close cooperation of the oil operators who have used this service, the efficiency and utility of the Electric Pilot service has been increased to a point where it is now a well established and recognized service. There are two major uses for the Electric Pilot: (I) permeability survey; (2) selective acid treatments. Permeability surveys are made to determine the thickness of the various permeable sections at the borehole, the vertical position of these zones at the bore hole, and the relative capacities of the various zones. Nomenclature Data obtained from the permeability survey are used to calculate three different indexes that pertain to the volume of fluid injected into the various permeable zones. A nomenclature for these various indexes has been set up, which correspond with the various productivity indexes, except that they are a measure of injected fluid rather than produced fluid. The nomenclature and definition of the indexes used in connection with a permeability survey by the Electric Pilot are as follows: 1. Capacity.—The volume of water injected into an individual permeable zone, in gallons Per minute. 2. Capacity Index.—The volume of water injected into an individual permeable Zone, in gallons Per minute Per pound Per Square inch differential Pressure. 3. Specific Capacity Index.—The volume of water injected into an individual permable zone in gallons Per minute Per pound per square inch differential per foot of thickness of the zone at the borehole. Bryant, of Danville, Ky., President of the Virginia Mining Co., operating coal-mines in Scott county, Tenn., for the following information relating to the existence of the Clinton iron-ore under the NW. slope of the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky and Tennessee. During the past 15 years quite an important oil-field has been developed in a region having Wayne county, Ky., as its center, and a large number of wells have been drilled in that and adjacent territory in the search for oil. There was an increased amount of activity in the oil business in Colombia during 1934 over that of the past several years in point of production, development and exploration. The Tropical Oil Co. continued to be the only company operating on what may be called a commercial basis, although the Gulf, through its subsidiary, the Colombian Petroleum Co., was actively engaged in exploratory and developmental work on its Barco property in eastern Colombia. The Socony Vacuum interests acquired an option from Sr. Luciano Restrepo on a concession in Las Monas-Sogamoso River area and carried out geological investigations on these lands during the year. Colombian Petroleum Company The activities of the Gulf in exploration and development in Colombia during 1934 were confined to the Barco concession. The following information is furnished through the kindness of Mr. E. S. Bleecker, Chief Geologist of the South America Gulf Company. Two strings of tools were kept in operation throughout the year on the Petrolca (Tarra) structure. Three wells were completed, including one deep test, all of which were producers from one or more of the three zones which have been defined in the Lower Cretaccous limestone formation. The narrow quartz vein deposits at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef gold mines in Ghana were emplaced during the plastic flow cross folding of pre-existing sub-isoclinally folded volcanic and perivolcanic deposits of Proterozoic age. The older fold structures tightened differentially according to their position in relation to the axes of the cross fold pattern giving complex outlines to the reefs in both plan and cross section.Some 4500 measurements of bedding plane linears were used in the resolution of the Boabedroo footwall structure at Konongo. The methodology developed at the Boabedroo mine was then successfully applied to other complex bodies at the Konongo and Ghana Main Reef mines.All mine development, especially stope preparation, of the folded quartz reefs at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef was controlled by the geologist to ensure that the veins were removed with as few geologically enduced hiccoughs as possible.

Field sampling was conducted in Lake Junin, Peru in order to assess the post-depositional reactivity of the highly contaminated lake sediments. High resolution profiles of dissolved Fe, Mn, SO42- and H2S across the sediment-water interface illustrate that the organic-rich sediments in the main basin become anoxic within several millimetres of the sediment-water interface. These permanently submerged deposits in the main basin serve as a diffusive sink for dissolved Zn and Cu. Conversely, the periodically unsaturated deposits in shallow areas are characterized by the remobilization of Zn and Cu in the deep acidic (pH < 4) pore waters, resulting in the release of these metals to the overlying water column.

Among other products steel mesh has been used successfully for many years to support strata and minimise loose material from falling into the mine opening. Installation of steel mesh has proven to be difficult to automate and many other products, such as Thin Spray-on Liners (TSL), have been proposed as a replacement. Ideally, the mechanical properties of these products should be superior to those of the steel mesh, however, most TSL trialled in mines to date have been weak and in addition have had slow cure times, as a result none of these materials can seriously compete with steel mesh. Now a new polymer product that cures in seconds and forms a stiff strata binder that surpasses the properties of steel mesh is under development at the University of Wollongong. To enable selection of a suitable polymer material for roadway skin reinforcement several numerical models were constructed to investigate the role of interface roughness and the influence of polymer stiffness on load transfer along the rock-polymer interface. Laboratory tests indicate that the shear adhesion of the rock-polymer interface can be substantial while the tensile adhesion can be much lower. The models indicate that the natural stone roughness and surface waviness plays a major role in shear adhesion while the elastic properties of polymer liner can significantly influence the polymer ability to resist fracture opening.

JX Nippon Mining & Metals Group recovers valuable metals from end-of-life electronic products in an economical and environmentally-benign way, based on technologies that have been acquired in mining, smelting, and refining operations over time. End-of-life electronic products contain halogens and hydrocarbons. When such materials are treated in the copper smelting process, corrosion of equipment and discoloration of sulfuric acid occur. As a countermeasure to these problems, we have developed pretreatment processes that include an incinerator, exhaust gas washing towers, and a defluorination facility. By implementing these improvements, we have been able to treat a large volume of end-of-life electronic products efficiently in the copper smelting process.
