The main challenges in most low grade iron ore deposits are finding the optimum flowsheet for beneficiation to achieve a final concentrate from both technical and economic viewpoints. Dry preconcentration techniques are being used to assist in reducing the amount of ROM feed to the plant. In this paper the benefits of utilising a dry cobbing magnetic separation technique for upgrading the product of HPGR in a closed circuit with dry screen 4 and 1.4 mm by performing a pilot scale test work was investigated. The experimental test work was done on two sample types of Yogi BIF magnetite iron ore located in Western Australia. Prior to magnetic separation studies, detailed characterisation of the feed materials including physical, chemical, mineralogical and magnetic properties were carried out. Furthermore, the effects of process parameters: drum rotation speed (1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 m/s), magnetic field intensity (1100 and 3800 gauss) and feed size (minus 4 and 1.4 mm) were investigated. The results revealed that sample type1 with 33.90% Fe could be upgraded to 41.51% Fe by using a stage of 1100 gauss dry magnetic separator with 69.12% weight recovery and 84.36% Fe recovery at a size of 4 mm. Also for sample type2, it is possible to increase Fe grade from 29.84% to above 36.68% with 75.58% weight recovery and 90.32% Fe recovery by applying one stage of 1100 gauss dry magnetic separator to a 4 mm size sample. This paper reports on some recent work in which several schemes were developed to model jointed rock under high stress, with particular reference to the phenomenon of "block motion" observed during dynamic loading of underground structures. Three approaches were made, corresponding to an increasing relative importance of internal block deformations as compared to rigid block movements. The first one uses distinct element method and assumes internally rigid blocks, which can break, repeatedly, whenever an empirical crack criterion is met. In the second approach each block is allowed three degrees of freedom to deform internally. The third approach, still in the development stage, permits arbitrary deformation of all blocks, which are internally decomposed into finite-difference zones and automatically rezoned during slip to preserve the calculation accuracy on joints. The last two schemes allow arbitrary constitutive relations for the intact rock, and all three schemes permit the geometrical arrangement of joints to be arbitrarily complex, in contrast to normal Lagrange, finite-difference programs, which are unsuited to model discontinua.

The uranium milling process at the Key Lake Operation of Cameco in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada results in the leaching of untargeted metal(loid)s such as arsenic, iron and nickel that are found at high concentrations in the ores. To mitigate the environmental impact of the leached As, Fe and Ni in the mill waste solution (raffinate), the pre-discharge mine tailings (rafffinate and residue) are neutralized with slaked lime, resulting in the formation of secondary As-, Fe- and Ni-bearing mineral phases which serve to control their concentrations to very low levels in the tailings porewater. As part of an ongoing investigation into the long-term evolution (10,000 year) of arsenic mineralogy in the Deilmann Tailings Management Facility (DTMF) at Cameco?s Key Lake Operation, it has become necessary to characterize secondary As-bearing mineral phases during the neutralization process prior to the discharge of the tailings and compare these to in situ As-bearing mineral phases in the tailings facility. This is primarily to determine if changes have occurred over time to As-bearing mineral phases in the tailings facility as well as to investigate whether alternate neutralization techniques may have a beneficial effect on the stability of mineral phases formed. Thus a bench-scale model was developed and preliminary testing conducted to simulate the mill neutralization process (i.e. neutralization of synthetic raffinate solutions with incremental amount of slaked lime to terminal pH values). The resulting ?tailings? (precipitates and supernatant) were then separated and analyzed. XRD analysis of the precipitates shows that the Fe occurred mostly as ferrihydrite. This was complimented with results from Raman spectroscopy which further indicated that the As appeared adsorbed onto the ferrihydrite. Results of geochemical modeling of the bench-scale test compared well with supernatant profiles from ICP-MS analysis.

Development work in the state of Utah in 1935 consisted of additional work done on wildcat tests started in previous years and on a number of new wildcat tests started during the year. No effort was made to extend areas or to discover deeper productive horizons in proven fields. Principal areas of development were in Daggett County, northeastern Utah; Grand and Emery counties, east-central Utah; and in Washington County, southwestern Utah. Daggett County Clay Basin.—The Mountain Fuel Supply Co. deepened Murphy No. 2, sec. 21, T.3N., R.24E., from 6030 to 6790 ft. for a test of the Sundance formation. Two sandstone members at 6520 to 6644 ft. and 6737 to 6790 ft. contained water. The hole was plugged back to 5860 ft. and left as a future gas supply for the Salt Lake City-Ogden pipe line. The failure of the Sundance formation to produce in this test, in view of the recent Sundance discoveries in Colorado arid Wyoming, was disappointing Emery County Last Chance.—-Thc wildcat test of the Rainsey Petroleum Corporn-tion, Well No. 1-X, sec. 18, T.26S., R.7E., completed plugging back from total depth of 3168 ft. to 2771 ft. and was shut in as a gas well. A gas sand at 2724 to 2771 ft. produced approximately 21 million cubic fert. A deep test of the structure will be started upon approval of a wit plan of development. In 1874 my attention was called to what seemed to me an interesting and new nickel and cobalt combination found in Ludwig and Carter's copper mine, near Mason Valley, Esmeralda County, Nevada. With the assistance of Mr. A. Hebberling I made several partial analyses of the mineral or minerals. I also communicated with my friend, Professor H. B. Cornwall, of the John C. Green School of Science, College of New Jersey, who analyzed a couple of specimens which I forwarded to him. The copper ore occurs in the mine principally as carbonate and to a certain extent as silicate, the latter generally in connection with clay seams or bands. In some places, together with the copper silicate and clay, generally interstratified with them, there occurred a compact shining black mineral (a) containing nickel and cobalt. Occasionally, in cavities, in connection with (a) was found a black substance (b), either massive and in this case very similar to (a) but with driller lustre, or forming an incrustation with rough and botryoidal surface and radial-fibrous structure, or granular and earthy. A few specimens were found having on the surface very fragile black needles (c) sometimes 1/2-inch long, interspersed with needles of malachite. Wollongong's total employment in manufacturing of basic metal products (over 26,500 in 1972/1973) was almost 50 per cent higher than that of Newcastle and double that of any other Australian city. "This paper presents regional radiometric gamma-ray spectrometry maps of Syria for total radioactivity (Ur) and surficial concentrations of equivalent uranium (eU). The maps were created by merging airborne and ground-based gamma-ray spectrometric survey datasets. On the regional radiometric eU map, eU anomalies are closely related to either phosphate and/or glauconite deposits. The Ur and eU maps delineate the boundaries of three phosphate deposits, close to the Palmyrides ridge, in the northern part of the Coastal Range and Syrian Desert. Scattered occurrences of uranium mineralization in other phosphate formations are attributed to secondary chemical and physical processes, rather than primary accumulation.RÉSUMÉ Cet article presente des cartes regionales radiometriques de spectrometrie gamma de la Syrie pour la radioactivite totale (Ur) et les concentrations en surface de l’equivalent en uranium (eU). Les cartes ont ete creees en combinant des ensembles de donnees, aeroportees et au sol, de releves de spectrometrie gamma. Sur la carte regionale radiometrique eU, les anomalies eU sont etroitement reliees aux gisements de phosphate et(ou) de glauconite. One hundred eleven pyrite samples from three porphyry-type deposits in the Canadian Cordillera were analyzed (many in duplicate) by AA spectrophotometry for Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Zn and Mn. All elements have density distributions that are lognormal or combinations of lognormal populations. Co and Ni in pyrites show zonal patterns that relate generally to mineralogical zones in the porphyry systems, particularly if contoured as the Co/Ni ratio. High Cu and Mn values in pyrites also correlate with Cu-rich mineralogical zones. Other elements studied appear less regular in their distribution patterns, although Pb and Zn highs in pyrite seem to occur sporadically near the margins of porphyry systems. These data considered with two other studies permit construction of an empirical model for the distribution of certain minor elements of pyrites from porphyry systems of the calc-alkalic suite. In particular cases pyrite geochemistry shows potential as an exploration tool to aid in target definition for detailed exploration.

As part of the value engineering process on a major Design Build highway project, instrumented trial pile load tests were used to achieve savings in cost and time on the foundations for a major river crossing. Two trial piles were tested close to failure load at 25MN. Following the interpretation of the pile load test results which included the determination of the ultimate shaft and base capacity, the mobilisation of the shaft and base resistance with pile displacement, and correlations with vertical effective stress and SPT profile, a revised design methodology was proposed. A 25% enhancement on commonly assumed ultimate shaft friction in Chalk was adopted. In addition a significant reduction in the Factor of Safety on end-bearing capacity generally used was also implemented. The revised design resulted in a significant cost and time saving on the piling operation with the pile length reduced by up to 6m (approx. 20%) for the river piers.

The Southern Appalachian coalfield has a long history of coal bumps that are attributable to a unique combination of topography, geology, and multiple seam mining. The high pillar stresses that generate a coal bump result from: i. mountainous topography where the overburden commonly exceeds 1,500 feet beneath ridges, ii. multiple seam mining, iii. thin interburden between active and abandoned mines, iv. thick beds of competent sandstone and sandy shale strata throughout the stratigraphic section, v. strong coal seams, and vi. irregular pillar and mining geometry in older room-and¬pillar mines. Coal has been intensively mined for more than 100 years in Eastern Kentucky, Southwestern Virginia, and Southern West Virginia. As a result, it is commonplace to have abandoned mines above and/or below active operations. Therefore, those conditions that generate coal bumps will be more prevalent in the future, as underground mining continues in Southern Appalachia. The focus of this paper concerns two coal bumps that occurred in the Kellioka seam where both undermining and overmining had occurred. The purpose of the investigation is to determine the magnitude and distribution of vertical stress that initiated the bumps, to identify bump-prone areas in the unmined reserve, and to recommend pillar centers and mining layouts to avoid future bumps. The state of stress in three vertically adjacent seams was examined using the LAMODEL boundary element program. Large, detailed numerical models were constructed of both bump areas and of the remaining unmined reserve block. The results of the numerical analyses were compared with those obtained using analytical equations.

The application of pressure oxidation processes to copper feed materials has gained increased exposure in recent years and some of these processes have made commercial inroads, although rather limited to date. Among the hydrometallurgical processes with significant commercial potential, Dynatec's copper pressure leaching process has been applied to arsenic-bearing copper materials and has shown, through a number of batch and continuous test programs, that pressure oxidation is a technically feasible option for the recovery of copper with coincident sequestration of arsenic in an environmentally benign residue.

The application of reinforcement techniques to enhance the stability of underground coal mine roadways subject to high stresses is discussed. Research conducted in the Illawarra Coal Measures has been aimed to delineate the factors which influence the behaviour of rock above roadways and the performance of the reinforcement placed. Design considerations for the reinforcement of mine roadways in the Bulli coal are based on a quantification of the rock response together with a reinforcement strategy to enhance the structural integrity of the roof strata.

The effect of orientation on the stresses, nctivation energies, and activation volumes for yielding and plastic flow of tungsten single crystals was investigated. Tensile tests showed the proportional limit to be a function of orientation: crystals whose tensile axes were near the [I10} direction were roughly three times as strong as [loo] crystals. The [ 1101 crystals showed low strain hardening and displayed yield phenomena, whereas the other orientations yielded smoothly and showed considerable strain hardening. The fracture mode was cleavage, except for crystals near the [1101 , many of which gave "chisel" fractures at 300°and 373°K. The activation energy for yielding was approximately one- half an electron; volt at all orientations, and the volume of activation was (12 to 14)b3, except near the [1101, where it was 7b3. Activation volumes generally increased after yielding. The most common theoretical models for yielding and strain hardening of bcc metals were. found to be insufficient to the intepretation of the observations here in. An explanation is proposed, based on the dislocation reaction dislocation networks and jogs, md jogs formed during plus tic flow. PRECLSE knowledge of the Drocesses involved in the yielding and plastic flow of the refractory metals is essential to the formulation of models for their flow and fracture. Despite this need, the single -crystal investigations, especially of tungsten, have been sparse. A research program was conducted to determine the relationship between operating conditions and medium losses in Mt Newman Mining&apos;s Beneficiation Plant. It was found that major medium losses were adherence losses and losses fran the overflow from the water recovery cyclones. Operating density and medium blend were found to have a significant effect on the medium consumption. Viscosity was thought to be the underlying factor. This viscosity problem was overcame by adding dilution water to the cyclone spigot discharge to reduce viscosity.
