En este sentido, la presencia de riquezas naturales, el fácil acceso, la continua predisposición a las inversiones de propietarios extranjeros, las buenas relaciones entre el comercio y el gobierno y el acceso a los mercados se constituyen como factores esenciales en el desarrollo de la producción minera del país norteamericano. The effects of hydrostatic pressures to 26 kbars on the micro structure of poly crystalline Cd, Zn, Bi, Sn, Zr, Mg, Cu, and Fe were examined. Pressure-induced microscopic plastic flow in the form of boundary migration, slip, multiple slip, or twinning has been observed either singly or in combination in cadmium, zinc, bismuth, and tin. No deformation was observed in zirconium, magnesium, copper, and iron. The occurrence of such deformation, in terms of its intensity and initiation pressure, relates directly to the degree of anisotropy in the linear compressibility. Pressure cycling does not significantly affect the residual tensile properties of a zinc alloy which exhibits pressure-induced deformation similar to that of Pure zinc. CLASSICAL elastic theory predicts that a superim-posed hydrostatic pressure will not induce shear stresses in an ideal material. Thus, in the case of homogeneous and isotropic materials plastic flow will not occur as a result of pressure exposure, regardless of the magnitude of the pressure, unless some form of phase transformation or permanent density change takes place. However, real materials, such as metals, often vary considerably from the condition of homogeneity and isotropy. For this reason, Vu and johannin' examined and observed hydrostatic pressure-induced microscopic deformation in polycrystalline cadmium and, zinc, but not in aluminum, to pressures of 9 kbars and indicated that its occurrence is related to anisotropy in the linear compressibility. In addition, Davidson and omaan' have reported pressure-induced deformation in polycrystalline bismuth below the 1-11 transformation pressure. It becomes apparent then that under certain conditions hydrostatic pressure can induce localized internal shear stresses in some metals of sufficient magnitude to cause plastic flow. In this work, eight pure single-phase metals of different lattice structures and degrees of elastic anisotropy were examined after pressure exposures of up to 26 kbars in order to establish the conditions under which such deformation occurs and the type of deformation as a function of pressure. The same limitations' that characterized 1931 existed in the old fields of Indiana and Illinois during 1932. Prices remained low. The average for the year for Illinois and southwestern Indiana was $1.032 as against $0.852 for 1931 and $1.616 for 1930. In September a curtailment of production of about 25 per cent became effective and was continued to the end of the year. There were no new discoveries and very little wildcatting was done. Considering the age of the wells, and the number still producing, there were few abandonments. The most outstanding thing about the old fields in these states is their long continued productivity. Illinois The fields along the southeast end of the LaSalle anticline had their peak of 33,686,000 bbl. in 1908. In 1932, with a 25 per cent restriction for 355 months, these fields produced 4,661,000 bb1.l There were 52 new completions (most of them in old territory) and of these 33 were dry, 8 were gas, and 11 were oil wells. The new oil wells had a total initial of 102 bbl., or an average of 9.3 bbl. per well. Nineteen of the new producers were in Crawford County. There were about 200 wells abandoned in the old southeast fields in 1932 as compared to 210 in 1931. The greatest number, 86, were in Lawrence County. To the end of 1932, the four major counties—Clark, Crawford, Lawrence and Wabash—had produced almost 394,000,000 bbl. from 92,160 acres. Better than one-half of this was produced in Lawrence County from 26,240 acres. The Dupo area of Sinclair County had no additions to production although four wells were drilled. On the Jacksonville structure in Morgan County, six gas wells with an average depth of 300 ft. were drilled to sands in the base of the Pennsylvanian. They produced an open-flow total initial of 2,000,000 cu. ft. This gas will be developed further to supply a local market.

"Responding to market developments, interest in locating deposits of wollastonite has grown significantly. The many occurrences in the Grenville marbles of Quebec can be grouped into disseminated type and discordant vein-type deposits. Disseminated-type wollastonite occurrences have the disadvantages of lower grade, the need for more elaborate mineral separation, and failure to meet ""long grain"" technical specifications. Vein-type deposits have better grades and technical characteristics; exploration should be focussed on these and in the contact-metamorphic aureoles of fluid-rich intrusions. Por meio de modelamento matemático dos processos de dessulfuração de gusa e aço, em processo KR e forno panela, respectivamente, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo estabelecer rotas de produção de aços proporcionando aumento da produtividade e redução de custos. Foram avaliadas as seguintes rotas de produção: dessulfuração apenas no aço, dessulfuração apenas no gusa e dessulfuração no gusa e no aço, quais os produtos podem ser obtidos em cada rota de tratamento e quais as condições para a fabricação de aço baixo enxofre, com teores abaixo de 20ppm. Além disso, desenvolveu-se um balanço de enxofre para o LD e um estudo dos fatores que mais impactam a reversão ou a dessulfuração nessa etapa da fabricação do aço. Ao final, foram determinadas faixas de trabalho que permitam ganhos integrados dos três processos e um modelo global de enxofre capaz de prever bons resultados para diferentes plantas e contingências operacionais de diferentes usinas.

The solvent extraction systems devoted to uranium purification from crude ore to spent fuel involve concentrated solutions in which deviation from ideality can not be neglected. The Simple Solution Concept based on the behaviour of isopiestic solutions has been applied to quantify activity coefficients of metals and acids in the aqueous phase in equilibrium with the solvent. This approach has been validated on various solvent extraction systems such as trialkylphosphates, malonamides or acidic extracting agents both on batch experiments and counter-current flowsheets. Moreover, this concept has been successfully used to estimate the aqueous density which is useful to quantify the variation of volume and to assess criticality parameters such as number density of nuclides.

The paper discusses how automation is steadily proceeding throughout all areas of the electrolytic zinc industry. Fluid bed roasters with integral sulphuric acid plants are now on -computer control. Highly efficient, continuous leaching and purification stages, with feed-forward predictive and optimisation computer control, precede electrolytic cells with on-stream solution analysers and automatic stripping of deposited zinc. Controlled electric induction furnaces feed continuous casting lines, equipped with automatic stacking and strapping, machines, after computer based metal analysis has confirmed metal purity or alloy composition. The paper also discusses the use of computer models tied to process control systems, and the equipment and solution measurements that could be automated with advantage, using modern micro-based controllers and analysers.

In Pennsylvania, 310 sampled sites of clay and shale have been studied with regard to potential use, lithology, physical properties, fired properties, major-element chemical analyses, and quantitative five-component X-ray mineralogy. Approximately 80% of the samples are of some potential use. Binary correlations of test data vs. potential use indicate that certain empirically determined parameters may be critical. These are: lithology, particularly for medium to superduty refractories and lightweight aggregate; kaolinite content for refractories vs. low-temperature fired product sources; quartz analyses with an apparent necessary minimum quantity for brick; quartz content, which is low in high grades of lightweight aggregate; mica content, which is low for refractories and possibly high for lightweight aggregate; total iron, which is low for refractories and shows a 4.0% minimum for lightweight aggregate; carbon dioxide, which is low for refractories, beneficial in lightweight aggregate, and probably restrictive for some tiles; chlorite-vermicalite, which is low for refractories and possibly beneficial in lightweight aggregate. In Pennsylvania, clay and shale materials constitute one of the state's major economic mineral resources. To date, the testing program indicates considerable development potential in brick, tile, and lightweight aggregate industries and perhaps a future potential for aluminum from shales that exceed 20% AID..

A incorporação de resíduo na massa argilosa é uma alternativa para diminuir o consumo de matéria-prima dando simultaneamente um destino adequado ao resíduo e assim preservar o meio ambiente. Este trabalho visa estudar a viabilidade técnica de utilização da lama de alto forno em massa argilosa usada na indústria de cerâmica vermelha. Neste sentido foram obtidas amostras da lama de alto forno e de argila e submetidas a ensaios de caracterização química, mineralógica e microestrutural. Amostras com teores de lama de alto forno variando entre 5% e 90% foram produzidas e queimadas em forno industrial à temperatura entre 800ºC e 900ºC durante 24 horas. As características tecnológicas avaliadas foram: absorção de água, porosidade aparente, massa específica aparente, perda de massa e resistência mecânica. Os estudos mostram que a lama de alto forno contribui para economia energética permitindo eficácia de queima. Os corpos-de-prova com até 5% de lama de alto forno obtiveram os melhores resultados nas características analisadas.

In the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute for 1881 (vol. ii., page 379), will be found an article upon this subject. The analyses there reported mere of samples taken from an ingot made especially rich in impurities and then cast in a sand-mould in order to give the elements a better chance to redistribute themselves, on account of the steel solidifying more slowly than when cast in an iron mould. Wishing to ascertain how much, if any, segregation takes place when the steel is cast in the ordinary way, I placed the subject in the hands of Mr. W. J. Olcott, a graduate of the Michigan University, who has carefully collected and analyzed samples taken from different parts of ingots and billets. In this undertaking he found himself somewhat embarrassed on account of being distant from steel-works, and therefore unable to supervise the selection of samples. He found, however, a competent and willing aid in the person of E. F. Wood, M.E., chemist of the Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Company, Limited, who has spared no pains in collecting the desired samples and furnishing drawings and descriptions of the ingots from which the samples were taken. The following are the results obtained: Ingot No. 1. This ingot was about 5 feet long and 13 X 131/4 inches at the point of fracture, which was 2 feet from the bottom. The samples

LKAB is a mining company situated in northern Scandinavia, manufacturing blast furnace- and direct-reduction pellets and sinter fines. Pellet development at LKAB comprises testing at laboratory and pilot scale. The LKAB Experimental Blast Furnace (EBF) is a unique test facility and an important tool in terms of product development and process research. For a better understanding of pellet behaviour in the blast furnace process, LKAB has started to use automated mineralogy for the characterisation and quantification of its iron ore products and pellets. A mineralogical evaluation of iron ore olivine pellets, taken from a test campaign in the EBF, has been performed. The studied materials were samples from excavated pellet layers through the entire EBF at different positions. A large number of iron ore pellets was analysed using a combination of automated mineralogy, using QEMSCAN«, and chemical analysis. Important information about the performance of pellets in the blast furnace process, such as a quantitative description of mineral and iron oxide alterations at different temperatures, Fe-reduction and alkali deposition, was obtained.

Field observations and sampling of land-based and submarine hydrothermal and geothermal sites show a definite link between the geological setting, fluid geochemistry and specialized assemblages of microorganisms found at these settings. Three initial sites have been chosen as a basis for these studies. The first site is located on hydrothermal vents in pit craters on the submarine volcano Lo?ihi (Hawai?i) at a water depth of 1,300 meters. The second site is within the geothermally active vents, ponds and lakes of the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. The third site extends along the chain of volcanically and hydrothermally active volcanoes of the Kermadec-Tonga arc and back-arc system. To focus our work in New Zealand, a geomicrobiology field and experimental center has been established in Wairakei, New Zealand, with the relevant genomics, proteomic and bioinformatics work being conducted at the University of Hawaii. As part of a partnership between the University of Hawai?i, the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences (GNS) and Victoria University of Wellington, a new interdisciplinary graduate course in geomicrobiology will be taught at Victoria University beginning next year. Since mineral-microbial interactions have been occurring for the past few billion years and these interactions have led to where one generates the other, a metal-bacteria research program has been initiated at GNS using arsenic-gold and other metal-bacterial interaction processes as a research objective. In this research program, we have completed the full genome of a new species of marine bacterium Idiomarina loihiensis from the Lo?ihi hydrothermal vents and identified specialized microorganisms living in pH 0.3 geothermal vent waters of White Island, New Zealand. The multidisciplinary approach to study the process of accumulation of metals in the hydrothermal systems clearly shows the path of how bacterial-mineral interaction can precipitate metal deposits. These studies will lead to new avenues for biomining, bioremediation and the understanding of the origins of life.

IN connection with an investigation in this laboratory on the high-zinc side of the copper-zinc system, it was observed that well developed segre-gate structures of the Widmanstätten type were formed when a secondary phase precipitated from the solid solution of copper in zinc. This paper presents an analysis of the crystallographic relationship between the segregate and the solid solution matrix. The data to be presented are an interesting addition to the literature on segregate structures in that the plane of segregation is one of the less densely populated planes. In agreement with the generalization of C. H. Mathewson and D. W. Smith1 the plane of segregation in the matrix con-tains the direction of closest atomic packing of the lattice. Furthermore, the matrix and the segregate are both hexagonal close-packed, which has not been reported hitherto in the literature.2 The increasing com-mercial importance of zinc alloys containing copper makes this funda-mental study of value to the metallography of zinc alloys.

Sabendo da necessidade do homem de desenvolver trabalhos com novos materiais, o uso de compósitos das mais variadas fontes cresce de forma proporcional aos avanços tecnológicos. Com isso, materiais como fibras naturais têm-se destacado, sendo utilizadas como reforço em compósitos estruturais, a fim de incrementar suas propriedades mecânicas. Nesse contexto, o objetivo principal deste trabalho é analisar as mudanças superficiais das fibras de bambu após terem passado por tratamentos químicos de mercerização e de acetilação. Estes foram realizados com o intuito de retirar ceras, hemicelulose e parte da lignina, que se encontram na superfície de fibras lignocelulósicas, a fim de incrementar a adesão das fibras com as matrizes poliméricas. Para analisar se os tratamentos propostos foram bem sucedidos na retirada desses compostos, as fibras foram avaliadas através da Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) antes e após os tratamentos. Os resultados apresentaram que os tratamentos, quando realizados de forma adequada, mostraram-se eficazes sem proporcionar prejuízos estruturais às fibras.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in 1998 reviewed its permitting process to determine how effective its program has been in preventing pollution and to identify here it could be improved. Of the 1,699 bituminous mine permits issued from 1987 to 1 996, 50 were identified to have current or past postmining discharges with water quality problems. The remaining 1,649 sites had no known current or past postmining discharges problems. The 50 sites were selected for further review. On closer examination, 33 of these permits no longer had water quality problems or the problem had not actually resulted from the permitted mining activity. Only 17 permits, or one percent of the total permits issued, were found to have caused long-term postmining discharges serious enough to require treatment and prevent bond release. Analysis of these 17 sites using current knowledge of mine drainage prediction, revealed that the most common cause of error was inadequate information in the permit application. Errors in interpretation of the application data and in implementing the permit were less common. A very small percentage of all permits issued resulted in postmining discharges for no clearly identifiable reason. Trends over the 10-year study period indicated a decreasing incidence of permits resulting in postmining discharges. Further, with the exception of the first few years of data, most of the postmining discharges were of mildly acidic or alkaline quality and amenable to passive treatment.

O entendimento, controle e otimização do rendimento de aço líquido, em uma aciaria LD, é uma tarefa complexa e desafiadora. Qualquer projeto que se disponha a otimizar o rendimento de aço líquido irá se deparar com enormes dificuldades técnicas e operacionais. A despeito de todas as dificuldades e em função da importância do rendimento de aço líquido, uma vez que o mesmo tem forte impacto no custo de produção, toda aciaria procura manter essa variável de processo sob estrito controle. Esse trabalho se propõe a mostrar todas as etapas da condução de um projeto, desenvolvido e implantado em 2014, que tinha como foco entender, controlar e otimizar o rendimento de aço liquido. Durante o desenvolvimento do projeto, foi encontrado um total de 19 desvios e foram implementadas 23 ações corretivas. O valor do rendimento, que antes do projeto estava em torno de 91,6%, evoluiu para uma média de 93,5% em 2015 e 2016. Esse aumento de 1,9%, em média, no valor do rendimento de aço líquido, proporcionou uma expressiva redução no custo de produção na aciaria.

The synthesis and study of a systematic series of phenolic oximes have shown that substitution in the 3-position can greatly affect extractive efficacy. Solid state, solution and gas phase analytical techniques, including X-ray crystallography, EPR and IR spectroscopy and collision induced dissociation mass spectrometry have been assessed for their applicability in interpreting the origins of differences in extractant strength. The dominant substituent effect on pH0.5 is the change in ligand pKa, with the more acidic ligands being stronger extractants. The influence of the 3-substituent on the stabilising intracomplex H-bonding of their copper(II) complexes also affects extractant strength. The 3-NO2 substituted ligand shows the lowest pH0.5 value, due to a combination of its low pKa and a stabilising bifurcated H-bond assembly around the copper(II) centre. Appending an aminomethyl group to the 3-position gives a ligand capable of binding a metal and its attendant anion. These metal salt reagents show potential to open up new flowsheets for the processing of high tenor copper feeds.

Theory and practice are described for a new processing method capable of precise mineral separations based primarily on differences in particle specific gravities at specific gravity split points from 1.5 to 21.0 and beyond. Separations are analogous to those achieved using rotating heavy media, except that the effective specific gravity of the fluid is created magnetically using a relatively dilute, low-viscosity, water-based magnetic fluid. Results reported here for a large, laboratory flow-through separator include: 1) 99% grade with 97% recovery in single pass separation of a suite of heavy minerals from quartz at I0 kg/h, 14 tph/rm2 of duct cross section, 2) 90% grade and recovery in single-pass separation of mixtures of sand-size, non-magnetic rutile (4.23 specific gravity) and zircon (4.72 specific gravity) at throughputs of 35 kg/h, 47 tph/rm2 of duct cross section, 3) partition curves having Ep90-10 transition widths 5% or less of mineral specific gravities, and 4) essential confirmation of the theory.
