THIS communication reports the results of some work done on the effect of gold, palladium, and platinum on the liquid-gas-solid equilibrium in the Ag-O system,1,2 see Fig. 1. Recently several investigators3, 4, 5 have reported the effects of gold, palladium, platinum, and copper on the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. This communication represents only a portion of the work done here on the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver and liquid Ag-Au, Ag-Pd, and Ag-Pt alloyss—the greater part having already been reprted. The apparatus, materials, and procedures used were similar to those of earlier work.' l The main precautions observed in obtaining these freezing points at constant temperature and PO2 = 1 atm were as follows: 1) The points were approached very slowly from higher temperatures. 2) In the very near vicinity of the L-G-S equilibrium point precautions were taken to see that the melt was in equilibrium with oxygen at one atm. Equilibrium was considered to have been attained when no more absorption of oxygen was observed in the last 15 min at a fixed temperature. 3) In the case of these alloys, the freezing point of the melt at 1 atm of oxygen and the equilibrium amount of oxygen absorbed by the liquid "infinitesimally" above this point were determined by lowering the temperature in very, very small steps, equilibrating at

Process control applications to the unit operations in both the Lead and Copper Smelters are reviewed. The basic aim of this control is to smooth plant inputs to produce an output of consistent quality in terms of chemical composition, temperature and physical properties. Most effort has been put into the process bottlenecks, namely in the process baghouse of the Lead Smelter and in the Copper Smelter reverberatory furnaces. The method of approach is discussed, firstly extensive plant measurement and data logging plus identification of factors which most affect the unit operation and secondly control of these factors to smooth out variations. This has been possible due to the development in-house of on-line instruments to measure the critical variables and the external use of computers for plant control. Some of these instrument developments are also briefly discussed.

ThE prediction of the activity coefficient for a solute in a multicomponent liquid metallic solution based on measurements in the related binary systems has been the object of study for some time, particularly in iron-base alloys.1,2 Very few measurements, however, have been made on nonferrous systems; furthermore, measurements made for the specific purpose of testing various prediction equations are almost nonexistent. The measurements here described of the activity coefficient of cadmium in liquid lead alloys were directed toward this goal. One of the most direct means by which the activity coefficient can be calculated has been based on the independent influences of each solute. When solute metals i,j, k, and so forth are present, the activity coefficient, y, of one of these (i for example) may be expressed as a product of factors which represent the effects of each of the other components:

Além dos indicadores energéticos globais, o balanço apresenta os consumos físicos específicos de cada insumo nas diversas áreas, permitindo a análise de cada setor das Usinas, isoladamente. Metodologia: Foram elaborados gráficos com indicadores de consumo energético por um período de cinco anos, bem como a distribuição percentual nas áreas produtoras. Nestes gráficos, é evidenciada a evolução dos indicadores ao longo dos anos. É também apresentada justificativa para a variação do indicador em relação ao ano anterior. Resultados: O trabalho apresenta análise das Usinas de Ipatinga e Cubatão em relação à evolução do consumo energético e sua distribuição percentual nas áreas produtoras.

Realizing the potential of cutting greenhouse gases (GHGs) associated with mining, a variety of approaches has been proposed for their mitigation. The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has been a key mechanism to assist in implementation of mitigation measures. The objectives of CDM are not only to assist Annex I countries in meeting their GHG emissions reduction targets with cost-effective reduction but also to achieve sustainable development in non-Annex I countries. However, apart from China, India, Brazil and Mexico, many developing countries are still in the stages of formulation or realizing CDM strategies. Projects associated with methane capture and flaring are the fourth most prevalent type of CDM project internationally. This research primarily has addressed emissions abatement and sustainable development aims and effectiveness of registered CDM projects associated with coal mining in China. The paper reviews 30 currently registered CDM projects in China on the UNFCCC database and six other non- Chinese projects. Systematic evaluation involving content analysis of documentary evidence regarding coal mining CDM projects is presented in relation to firstly, quantitative reduction of GHG emissions and secondly, sustainable development outcomes. The projects have been assessed via a set sustainability criteria. Overall it was found that sustainable development goals are only briefly referred to in Project Design Documents, Letter of Approvals and validation documents. Varying types of sustainability initiatives have been implemented with weak to strong indications of effectiveness. This has implications for the future effectiveness of CDM projects in the mining sector, the proposed new market mechanism under UNFCCC, and for assessment of projects under mechanisms established outside the UNFCCC.

En ese sentido, se aplicará la metodología descrita en la guía del PMBOK, así como la de dos buenas prácticas consideradas críticas en el desarrollo del proyecto como son: la aplicación de valor ganado en el control y seguimiento del proyecto y la implementación de un sistema de gestión de riesgos para el proyecto que proteja sus objetivos a través de una gestión consistente y eficaz de la incertidumbre.

Cajamarca es uno de los departamentos con mayor historia y presencia del sector minero a nivel nacional; sin embargo, en la región solo el 22,9% de la población adulta accede a créditos formales en el sistema financiero (INCORE, 2022). Las mujeres tienen más restricciones que los hombres para acceder al crédito formal. Respondiendo a esta problemática; desde el 2008, en colaboración con el Banco de Desarrollo del Perú (COFIDE), la Asociación los Andes de Cajamarca (ALAC) fundación empresarial de Minera Yanacocha, viene implementando un proyecto de educación financiera que apoya a las comunidades locales a optimizar la gestión de sus ingresos y ahorros.

In this report the importance of diffusion in controlling the emission of methane in mines is examined. An in-situ diffusion parameter is defined and calculated for a hypothetical unfractured lump of coal in the Pittsburgh and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds. The values obtained are similar to those obtained with lump coal in laboratory experiments.

A qualidade superficial dos produtos lingotados continuamente está ligada diretamente aos estágios iniciais de solidificação do aço no molde. Nessa etapa do processo, os parâmetros e estratégias de oscilação são decisivos para a obtenção de produtos com qualidade superficial adequada. Assim, foi desenvolvido na Usiminas um sistema computadorizado para monitoramento dos parâmetros de oscilação do molde, de modo a fornecer subsídios para um melhor entendimento do processo. Este sistema monitora, em tempo real, o eixo vertical e as oscilações nos eixos horizontal e transversal, mesmo com baixas amplitudes. O sistema desenvolvido possibilita a obtenção dos dados com alta precisão, de forma totalmente automática e a realização de pós-tratamento de forma a se obterem valores relativos ao processo de lingotamento e funcionamento do molde.

Although inherent mineral matter appears to have no effect of the reflectivity of inertinite in the reflecting light microscope, it has a marked effect on the grey levels resulting from the backscattered electron response in the scanning electron microscope. Inertinite with a high inherent mineral matter content has a high grey level response but not as high as that of mineral matter. The highest grey level response is with inertodetrinite which at times could be mistaken for mineral matter. Fusinite has a higher grey level response than semi-fusinite. The backscattered electron grey level response corresponds to average atomic number and hence approximately to density. If a porous structure develops and becomes filled with mineral matter such as S, Cl, Ca, Si, and Al the grey level will be higher. Micrinite has an unusual response in that it behaves like an exinite maceral in the SEM rather than an inertinite maceral. It either has a low grey level when relatively free of inherent mineral matter, or a low grey level background with high level granules corresponding to Si and Al dominantly. Similar structures have been found in exsudatinite and resinite. It is thought that micrinite results from the migration of hydrocarbons out of exinite giving a porous structure which usually accommodates inorganic matter.

O objetivo deste trabalho é de identificar estratégias para avaliação da conta de energia de unidades industriais, que sirvam de subsídio para o processo de tomadas de decisão e que eventualmente forneçam benefícios econômicos imediatos, sem investimento. Para esse fim, aplica-se uma metodologia simples que consiste em três aspectos: avaliação da demanda contratada, análise de modicidade tarifária e averiguação de excesso de consumo de energia reativa. Apresenta-se um estudo de caso da aplicação dessa metodologia em uma unidade produtiva de distribuição de aço. Nesse estudo, observa-se redução de custos por se evitar penalidades tanto de ultrapassagem de demanda quanto de excesso de energia reativa, representando uma economia de aproximadamente 15% do valor total da conta de energia elétrica da unidade.

The design of water and ore addition points has an important bearing on the ease of operation of a grinding circuit. The nature of some of the design decisions and the possible options of the designer are discussed. For example, design decisions determine the ease of alteration and measurement of flowrate, the ease of maintenance, and the effectiveness of feed- back control loops which maintain material inputs (water and ore) at required values. To illustrate discussion in the paper, a grinding circuit which contains one rod mill and one ball mill in series is used. Practical ramifications of desigl decisions :;ne stressed.

An innovative biological treatment system designed to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and immobilize metals from cyanide leach operations is described. A pilot-plant demonstration was conducted to detoxify cyanide and immobilize several metals from a process stream at the McCoy/Cove Mine. Testing was performed under the EPA’s Mine Waste Technology and Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation Demonstration Programs. This technology was successful in detoxifying cyanide and effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed. Results show that biological treatment can offer an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

Noranda Inc., CEZinc presently employs a cement-stabilization (jarofix) process to stabilize its jarosite residues for direct disposal. In this process, Portland cement partly decomposes Na-jarosite to form Ca6Fe2(SC>4)3(OH)i2.nH20, ferric hydroxide and sodium sulphate which further reacts to form gypsum; approximately one-third of the Na-jarosite reacts in the current commercial product. The cured jarofix products also contain minor amounts of various Ca-Al-Fe silicate-sulphate-hydrate phases and traces of calcite. Together with gypsum and a Ca-Fe sulphate phase, these species bond the various particles together, imparting mechanical strength and reducing the permeability. Water-soluble Zn and Mg are stabilized in the Ca-Al-Fe silicate-sulphate-hydrate phases. The freshly cured products usually contain small amounts of moisture and traces of residual Portland cement, which provides additional alkalinity for the neutralization of any residual acid species. Jarofix products stored for more than six years in the laboratory, after curing, are usually dry and exhibit the same micro-textures as those of the freshly cured products. However, the stored products are depleted in the Ca6Fe2(S04)3(OH)i2.nH20 and Portland cement phases, and are enriched in gypsum and calcite which reflects the highly alkaline environment of the jarofix products. The aged products also have increased amounts of the Ca-Al-Fe silicate-sulphate-hydrate phases which have elevated Zn and Mg contents. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. This study presents a model to predict fate of resuspended sediment in the development of deep-sea mineral resources including manganese nodules under Clarion-Clipperton area of the Pacific Ocean. The manganese nodules are expected to be developed near future and major research is undergoing in Korea recently concerning many aspects of the mineral resources development. One aspect is about environmental concern related to the deep-sea development, and a major environmental problem is the resuspended deep-sea sediment. In order to quantitatively analyze the resuspended sediment in the water column during the deep-sea development, particle size distribution (PSD) was considered an important factor in this research. The model developed here includes PSD and coagulation process, as well as sedimentation process. The model is one dimensional in the vertical profile, and was designed to describe the change of particle size distribution in the water column in the given vertical point. Based on the mathematical modeling, a numerical model was developed. Using the model, basic simulation was performed under representative environmental setting of the deep-sea environment. The simulation showed the dynamics of change of particle size distribution for 50 m depth of water column from the deep-sea bed, up to 10 days of simulation time. The simulation results indicate that coagulation seemed an important factor in the fate of resuspended deep-sea sediment. As a result, this research shows that the particle size distribution approach, as well as considering the coagulation process, is needed and may be effectively applied to environmental impact analysis of deep-sea resuspended sediment. O cenário energético brasileiro nas últimas décadas apresenta períodos de escassez na oferta de energia elétrica. Essa realidade impacta o setor industrial por representar um risco operacional e fortalece a necessidade de aumentar a eficiência energética dos processos. Adicionalmente, a eficiência contribui para a melhoria nos resultados financeiros e minimiza impactos ambientais. Nesse contexto, o uso de iluminação LED se destacou nos últimos anos como alternativa às tecnologias tradicionais. No entanto, inicialmente os preços das lâmpadas e luminárias LED eram proibitivos. Esse trabalho apresenta um histórico do custo dessas lâmpadas em diferentes aplicações típicas à uma empresa siderúrgica e demonstra que atualmente o LED pode ser considerado atrativo em algumas delas. São apresentados também casos de sucesso implantados na AcelorMittal Tubarão, garantindo inclusive melhoria nos índices de iluminamento. Por fim, é apresentado de forma sintetizada o Programa de Eficiência Energética da ANELL que disponibiliza recursos das concessionárias de energia para implantação de projetos, sendo ilustrados exemplos de projetos reais e suas economias de energia utilizando iluminação à LED.
