Lineament analysis, a remote sensing application, for geological structures, has been criticized, for its reliance on subjective interpretations. The Mine Safety & Health Administration's Roof Control Division performs lineament analyses with a technique that removes much subjectivity. Study areas are viewed on satellite images with software that allows examination under artificial sun azimuths and elevations. Extraneous lineaments are removed through successive steps of superposition, resulting in selection of the most robust linear features. Field investigations revealed a strong coincidence of joint and. fault zones that were parallel with projected lineaments. The Roof Control Division's successful identification o f lineaments associated with roof falls and high wall failures has prompted some mine managers to incorporate lineament analysis as a mine-planning tool. The identification of potentially hazardous ground conditions would allow mine operators to obviate safety concerns that might otherwise adversely affect the health and safety of miners.

The effect of increasing ionic strength, via monovalent and divalent ions, on alkyl sulfate flotation of hematite and quartz war investigated. The effects of collector chain length and pretreatment on this flotation were also studied. Sodium hexadecyl sulfate was shown to be a superior flotation collector to sodium dodecyl sulfate for recovery of hematite when there was no salt addition. Similar observation were made when sodium sulfate or sodium chloride was used to control ionic strength. Sodium dodecyl sulfate floated hematite better than its longer chutited counterpart under conditions of low pretreatment temperature and increasing calcium chloride concentration. The flotation recovery for all salt containing pulps was almost always improved after preboiling. Most of the results obtained when the pretreatment temperature was raised were attributed to increased solubility of the collector.

The methane emissions from an advancing coal mine section were continuously monitored for 120 days. During this time, the section advanced 2,000 feet into virgin Pittsburgh coalbed producing 54,565 tons of coal with a total methane emission of 91 million ft3. Analysis of the data gathered showed that daily methane emissions did not correlate with overburden thickness and daily coal production. A good correlation was found between the daily methane emission and the average length of rib exposed to virgin coal.

In mid-1970, Park City Ventures, a Utah partnership of Asarco and the Anaconda Company, initiated a six-phase exploration and development program in the Park City District, Utah. Geologic studies had delineated a number of exploration targets in several areas of the district. Discovery of ore in any of the target areas and continued favorable downdip development below then productive ore bodies would allow for reserve expansion and mill construction. The targets were: replacement mineralization in the Mississippian Humbug formation below productive ore bodies on the east flank of the Park City anticline; replacement mineralization in the Humbug formation in an unexplored fault block in the footwall of the Hawkeye structure on the east flank of the anticline; vein and replacement mineralization along the Silver Fissure; potentially higher grade replacement mineralization in the Humbug formation in a theorized structural block on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario vein; replacement mineralization in the Permian Park City formation in the West End shaft area of the Silver King mine; vein mineralization along the Back vein in the Judge mine. In 1971 the Judge and Silver King Projects were suspended, due to a 30% cutback in the exploration budget. In spite of the cutback additional reserves were developed below the Humbug East Flank ore bodies; a major zone of ore grade mineralization was discovered along the Silver Fissure, five new ore bodies were found in the Humbug and Doughnut formations on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario vein. First concentrates were shipped from a new mill in May 1975.

The use of chemical additives on grinding is of significant importance considering the high energy consumption of grinding processes. My research indicates that the dispersant approach explains the effects, in this particular case of wet grinding. Further, the dispersant approach combined with torque measurements give the possibility of clarifying the mechanisms involved when using grinding aids. I find the conclusions derived from the data obtained to be correct and useful for grinding. In general, I agree with the explanations. However, I would like to discuss several additional points that I consider to be important, and in the same time to mention some of my own results from investigations similar to those presented in the study under discussion. The "bed volume concept" and the change of slurry viscosity explain adequately the data plotted on [fig. 3], in conjunction with [Figs. 1 and 2]. However, the significant increase of the average torque in the case of 83% solid with XFS-4272 introduces the necessity of establishing the optimum of percent solid when dispersant is used. For example, the optimum percent of solid for different materials varies. One of the reasons is the material's mass density. On the other hand, it is necessary to determine the concentration of the chemical used. Because of this, it would be interesting to know how the cited concentration was selected.

In the past, other authors.1, 2 have studied the influence of a skin effect on the productivity of a well. This skin effect, expressed by the skin factor S, is considered to be caused by a thin layer of impaired permeability immediately around the wellbore and extending vertically over the whole productive interval penetrated by the well. The skin factor S is defined as follows. Based on this, the impairment in productivity caused by a skin can be expressed by the fractional loss in productivity I, which is the loss in productivity divided by the total unimpaired productivity. For compressible flow in a stabilized well which drains a circular area of radius re, 1 is given by The present paper deals with a different kind of productivity impairment. Consider a well in which part of the productive formation is blocked off completely, either by incomplete penetration or by exclusion of parts of the productive zone by blank casing. In Fig. 1 (A, B and C), three examples are shown. Fig. 1(A) shows the situation where a well only partially penetrates the formation. This often is done to combat the actual or imagined danger of bottom-water coning. Fig. 1(B) shows a well producing from only the central portion of a productive interval. This type of completion is sometimes used where both water and gas coning are a problem. Although the case of a well producing through perforated casing cannot be treated in a manner similar to the previous two cases (where radial flow in the horizontal plane is assumed), Fig. 1(C) shows several intervals open to production and qualitatively describes this case (as will be discussed later). To study the loss in productivity in all these cases, two parameters are introduced which fully determine the impairment. The first is the penetration ratio "b," i.e., the total interval open to fluid entry divided by the total thickness of the productive zone. The second is the ratio hlrw. In this ratio, rw is the wellbore radius. The definition of h is more cumbersome. In Fig. 1(A), h is the thickness of the total productive interval. The streamline configuration for this case of partial penetration is basic to the other two cases considered (Views B and C of Fig. 1). It will be obvious from Fig. i (A) that the flow lines in the uppermost portion of the formation will be essentially horizontal, while those in the lower portion will curve upward toward the well. In Fig. 1(B), with only the middle portion of the zone open to production, the streamline configuration. of the upper half will be an exact mirror image of that in the lower half of the zone. Hence, for the case illustrated in Fig. 1(B), h is defined as one-half the total sand thickness. It follows, then, that in Fig. 1(C) h is one-half the distance between corresponding points in adjacent intervals. (In gun-perforated casing, h would be one-half the distance between perforations.) In a paper by Nisle4 and a paper given by the present authors5, the mathematical theory was developed for the cases under consideration. In the present publication, the emphasis is put on the results of these studies; consequently, the equations derived in Refs. 4 and 5 will be omitted, for the most part. The pressure drop p in a well producing from only a portion of the total formation thickness can, in analogy with Eq. 1, be expressed by Numerical solution of Eq. 5 by use of the IBM 650 leads to the following important conclusions. I read the paper “The jackknife approach” with interest. There appears to be a widespread misunderstanding of the kriging variance as a measure of the error variance of the kriged grade estimate of an ore block. Virtually all mineral deposits display skew frequency distributions and are subject to the well-known proportional effect. Thus, it is usual to find in an ore body, when subdivided a really into subpopulations, that the variances of the grades (or the total sills of the variograms) for the subpopulations will be correlated with the corresponding mean grades (usually linearly with the squares of the mean grades). Thus, the variogram will be stationary.

HE procedure of directional freezing by the Bridgman technique1 is frequently used in crystal preparation. On those occasions where the crystal is regrown, it can be advantageous to Crop part of the ingot before regrowth to achieve purification. This note describes some simple, yet interesting, observations concerning the effects of cropping an ingot between successive freezes. First, it is not effective to Crop the front end of an ingot, whether or not the distribution coefficient, k , of the impurities is greater or less than unity. This can be shown as follows. The concentration C, of an impurity in a directionally frozen ingot of length d with a uniform cross section is given by where x is the distance along the ingot, and C0 is the initial concentration per unit length. It is assumed in deriving this equation that diffusion is negligible in the solid, is complete in the melt, and that k is constant. Consider that a section of the ingot Ad is removed from the front end. Then the average impurity concentration in the remaining (d- Ad) section of the ingot can be shown by integration to be given by When the ingot is remelted and refrozen, the new impurity distribution is given by where xl is the distance along the refrozen ingot. Substituting the value of c into Eq. [3], one finds This is identical to Eq. [11 when x = (x, Ad), which represents the original impurity distribution in the (d - Ad) section of the ingot after the first directional freeze. Therefore, the cropping and re-freezing accomplished nothing. This can also be seen physically by realizing that the average impurity content in the melt after the first Ad section is frozen, is identical to that after the resulting ingot has been cropped and remelted. Hence, it is assumed in the following sections that only the tail end of the ingot is cropped. However, it must be realized that for impurities with k greater than one, the pieces cropped from the tail end are purer, and are therefore saved. After cropping an amount Ad from the tail end of an ingot, the average impurity concentration of impurities in the remaining portion of the ingot is given by wheref= d/d. For the case of k < 1, the purification is defined as c,/c. It is obvious from Eq. [5] that the purification increases asf increases, but the increase in purification is not large. For example, iff is doubled from 0.1 to 0.2, the purification increases by only 10 pct for k = 0.5, by only 24 pct for k = 0.1, and by 32 pct for k =0.01. Much smaller values off than 0.1 are not desirable since insufficient purification is achieved. These figures indicate that much larger values off do not lead to substantial improvement, especially considering that much of the original ingot is lost. Therefore, it is generally useful to Crop about 1/10 of the ingot to achieve purification. As compared to doubling the value off, it is much more helpful to remelt, refreeze, and crop the ingot twice. Using Eq. [51 reiteratively, and assuming f= 0.1, it is found that the purification after this process is found to be increased over the purification after a single freeze and cropping by 33 pct for k= 0.5, 450 pct for k = 0.1, and 4100 pct for k = 0.01. This indicates that considerable purification can be obtained by this procedure. However, if purification is the main goal, one should resort to zone refining,3
