(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE following paper aims to make a full explanation of the phenomena of rock jointing. It may be unnecessary to give any general description of what are termed joints in rocks, but. Professor Geikie's clear and faithful generalizations are so illuminating that no excuse need be given for introducing the following and other quotations into this paper: "Almost all rocks are traversed-by vertical or highly inclined divisional planes termed joints. These have been regarded as clue in some way to contraction during consolidation (fissures of retreat) ; and this is no doubt their origin in innumerable cases. But, on the other hand, their frequent regularity and persistence across materials of very varying texture suggest rather the effects of internal pressure-and-movement within the crust."1 General Explanation.-In this paper I show that the phenomenon of jointing may to a large extent be accounted for by the pressure of the water contained in the pores of the rock. To understand this, each constituent grain of. the porous material may be considered to be separately compressed by the 'water which submerges it. As all the grains are held together by cohesion, the whole mass is contracted by this pressure. In an indefinitely extended mass, however, there must be a limit to the possible contraction without rupture, because the material is restrained from. moving freely by other material around its boundaries. The mass of rock thus becomes broken up. This phenomenon is known as " shrinkage " jointing. The terra "shrinkage" is an apt one, if it be understood that the shrinkage of the rock is often brought about by change of stress. Stresses.-The compressive component of water stress on the individual grains is evidently the same as that of the water with which it is in contact. This is so, both. before and after the jointing is formed. Before the jointing is formed there is, however, a tensile stress in one or more directions which keeps the material from contracting.

THE Christy Creek clay mine of the General Refractories Co., in the Olive Hill District, ranks with the most important producers in the north-eastern Kentucky fire clay field, both from production of high-grade flint clay, as well as unusual extent and thickness of deposit. The property is but one of a number controlled by the General Refractories Co. in this district, but is given first consideration among them by the operating staff. Its total area is over 5000 acres, owned in fee or by lease of clay mining rights, and although mining operations have been in progress for over five years, scarcely one per cent of the ground has been worked as yet. The mine is near the southwestern end of the clay field, which extends in a belt 12 miles wide and 55 miles long, in a southwestern direction from Kenova, W. Va., which, as the name indicates, is at the junction of Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. Olive Hill, where there is one of the l1Ulin plants of the General Refractories Co., and to which the clay from the mine is shipped, is about 26 miles distant from the mine. Connection is made with the Chesapeake & Ohio R. R. by a spur line . 8 miles in length, owned and operated by the company.

"The Bureau of Mines, in its investigations of as masks for use in mines and allied industries tests masks that are voluntarily submitted by manufacturers for examination, and issues approval certificates for masks that meet the bureau's specifications. This paper describes the tests that were conducted on an ammonia gas mask by the Bureau of Mines, which successfully met all requirements and tests for ammonia, masks. The mask tested, known as the GMD ammonia gas mask, is manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. This ammonia gas mask, which forms a pocket over the face and allows breathing through the nose, consists of a face-piece with non-shatter eyeglasses; this is attached by means of a corrugated rubber tube to a canister supported on wearer's chest by a harness. The canister is green in color and is of tinplate construction. It was a disc valve at the bottom to prevent exhalation through the canister. The filling of the canister consists of a specially impregnated activated charcoal, about 750 c.c. in volume and weighing about 520 grunn. The material is supported above the check valve by a dome of wire screen covered with toweling. Above the granular material is a filter of absorbent cotton screens, and all materials are hold firmly in place by pressure from strong"

"fElectrical disintegration (ED) by high voltage electrical pulse is a relatively new technique which was demonstrated by Tomsk and Mekhanobr in the 1960’s and has been investigated in detail by Andres in the 1990’s. In the ED, the electrodes should contact to the targeted material and the energy of high voltage pulse is charged directly to the material. It has been reported that the ED is quite efficient to improve liberation of composite materials, because electrical current passes often through the conductive part and/or along the phase boundaries. Theoretically, the energy required in the ED should be lower than in the other mechanical breakage methods, because breakage occurs basically by tensile strength in the ED while in the other mechanical methods it does mainly by compressive strength which is generally ten times or higher than tensile strength.Coal, involving many kinds of mineral matters, is considered to be one of the targets for the ED to apply to. In Japan, national “Hyper-Coal Project” is now running, in which ultra-clean coal (less than 200ppm of ash, 0.5ppm of Na and K, and 2ppm of Ca) is planned to produce by combining advanced coal preparation and liquefaction technologies for the purpose of direct injection of coal combustion gas to turbine. The ED is one of the major techniques to be developed in this project, since mineral matters must be liberated before introducing to the following advanced separation processes. Liberation is important also for the utilization of middling coals generated from usual coal preparation plants. The application of the ED to the middling coals is considered effective for upgrading these coals with higher liberation degree and less energy input."

The highest current density suitable for the electrowinning process is between 50 to 60 % of its limiting current density. One of the most important influences on the limiting current density is the thickness of the hydrodynamic boundary layer near the electrode surface. Therefore, the fluid flow in a copper electrowinning cell is calculated. The numerical simulation - using the CFD-software package FIRE® - considers all three different types of the fluid flow, namely, the natural convection, the forced convection by electrolyte circulation and the forced convection by electrochemically induced gas stirring. The simulation of natural convection is based on the different density values in the boundary layer at the electrode surface given by a density/concentration correlation. The copper concentration - linked with the current density by Faraday law - is solved by an additional transport equation. The simulation of the forced convection by the electrochemically-induced gas stirring is done by using a real two-phase calculation. That means that all differential equations are solved again for the second phase. The numerical solution of the fluid flow field is compared with the results of LDA- measurements, which were done in a special cell. The software for the LDA enabled a calculation of the void fraction possible and therefore a rough estimate of the mass transfer coefficient through the prevailing gas bubble induced convection can be made by assuming the influence of relative bubble volume.

This research is to grope for a method to reduce high pore pressure taking place on tunnel shotcrete lining, especially in underwater tunnels, effectively by utilising a new concept of patternised pin drain. Accordingly, the patternised pin drain system is investigated numerically in order to confirm to the effect of reduction of pore pressure by the pin drain and its effective application. Installation of pin drain shows considerable reduction in the figure of pore pressure. It is found through 2D numerical modelling that the change of pore pressure, according to the shape and the location of pin drain, is sensitive by the sequences of the change of location > the change of length > the change of angle degree. In the results of investigation in 3D modelling, the pore pressure is the largest in the centre of the interval among pin drains, and it is possible to obtain an ideal degree of longitudinal angle and an interval by investigating pore pressure taking place on the lining.

Bakelite is fairly widely known as a suitable material for the mounting of ore specimens, concentrates and tailings for microscopical study, but has not as yet had extensive application. It is the most suitable mount for specimens which are to be held in the mechanical holder of a polishing machine, based on that described by J. W. Vanderbilt*, which is installed in the Geological Department of the Melbourne University.Bakelite products are prepared by subjecting bakelite powder to a temperature of about 1600 C. under a pressure of approximately two tons per square inch for a period of four minutes. The shape and size of the products are governed by the use of suitably constructed dies. When the concentrate or tailing is mixed with the bakelite powder, a briquette is produced which can be polished so that the opaque minerals in the sample can be examined microscopically in the same way as in a piece of solid ore. Future of State and Federal Oil Regulation. BY NORTHCUTT ELY (Trans , vol 118 2400 words) The Interstate Oil Compact, ratified by six states and Congress in 1935, replaced the petroleum code, invalidated with other codes by the Schechter decision This compact endeavors, first, to conserve reservoir energy of oil pools through substantially uniform conservation measures by the states, second, it recognizes the state rather than the Federal Government as possessing the necessary police power for that purpose, third, it establishes an interstate advisory commission, so that orderly production in one state is not penalized by uncontrolled production in another, fourth, Federal interests are recognized in the control of hot oil, regulation of imports and fact-finding forecasts of supply and demand by the Bureau of Mmes It is not as complete an instrument as proposed by the Federal Oil Conservation Board in 1932, but is workable, and will be effective in proportion to the support given it by the industry Three results may follow First, now that fear of Federal control has subsided, the industry may lose interest in the compact and let it fall to pieces, second, if vigorously supported by the industry, the compact can accomplish most of the conservation objectives sought by the Federal control measures now believed unconstitutional, third, if the Compact fails, Federal regulation is almost certain to be revived, and can probably be sustained in connection with neutrality legislation, regulation of interstate pipe lines, and coordination of Federal and state gasoline taxes Nearly every step toward governmental regulation has originated within the industry state proration, the Federal petroleum code, Federal control of imports, Federal control of hot oil are examples The Compact shows a trend toward coordination between the powers of the industry, the state government, and the Federal Government If this arrangement fails through lack of interest by the oil industry, the next step is likely to be absorption by the Federal Government of the other two factors involved in the situation

The following tests were made, during 1889, for the Susquehanna Coal Company, to determine the relative efficiency of several styles of mine-car wheels in use at their collieries at Nanticoke, Pa. The wheels experimented upon may be divided into two classes: The "old style" (Figs. 1 and 2), which are oiled at every trip; and the "new style" (Figs. 3, 4, and 5), which require oiling about once in two to four months. Fig. 1 shows a section of a plain cast wheel, with patent annular oil-chamber. This is held in position on the axle by a square, split cotter-pin. Fig. 2 is a similar wheel, with a patent cast bushing, which is readily replaced when worn. The lubrication is effected by a simple oil-hole, but the oil is delivered a little inside of the gaugeline of the wheel, where it is most needed. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are sections of a " new style " patented, self-oiling wheel. In this, the outer end is cast closed, and the wheel is fastened to the axle by a spring cotter-pin passed through one of the plugged holes. Dirt is prevented from entering the open end by a cap, with faced end and packing-ring, fitting over the end of the hub. The lubricant is introduced into the oil-chamber through one of the plugged holes in the hub. THERE are two main sources of the water that floods productive oil or gas sands. The water may rise from the lower depths of the producing stratum, or it may come from beds above or below the oil-bearing formation. Usually the recovery of oil is decreased by water entering the oil sands, and most oil-field waters, especially those of deep wells, tend to foster the formation of an emulsion, which is expensive to treat. This paper deals with a method of distinguishing between waters that encroach upon oil-bearing, beds from sources in the same stratum and waters .that reach the oil sands from horizons above. In order to remedy effectually water difficulties in oil and gas wells, it is absolutely necessary to determine the source of the invading water. Sometimes evidence such as the structural relations between the strata penetrated by neighboring wells and those found in the well under investigation is not adequate; also, data from drill logs and well records, from mechanical tests made on the wells by plugs, testers, drilling tools, etc., and from tests by chemical indicators such as eosin and Venetian red, may he unsatisfactory, for such data may fail to locate the source of the infiltrating waters. As a resort in such cases, the application of chemical analyses, that is, the comparison of an analysis of the water in, question with that of typical waters from the various water horizons in that particular district, has in certain instances proved of value. This method has been used to advantage in the Westside Coalinga field of California, where the source of water may be fairly definitely determined from its composition. The chief conclusions concerning the chemistry of the oil-field waters in California by G. S. Rogers1 are: "Oil-field water is not necessarily salty, as is generally believed, and may not be even slightly salty to the taste. Methods of calculating relative permeability data have recently been reviewed and extended.' It was shown that for sandstone reservoirs where ' is approximately a linear function of effective saturation (as suggested first by Corey') it is possible to express relative permeabilities in very simple terms. For systems wetted by connate water and producing oil and gas (gas saturation growing at the expense of oil) the expression for the The accuracy of Eq. I has been frequently confirmed in our laboratories; because of its simplicity we make routine use of it in the analytical solution of proble~ns in reservoir engineering. Three aspects of rock mechanics, namely, in-situ stress estimation by acoustic emission (AE) method, strength of rock mass and role of chemicals to reduce the strength are covered. It is possible to detect the previously applied maximum stress by stressing a rock specimen to the point where there is a substantial increase in AE activity. This is known as Kaiser effect. From the AE signatures in the second and subsequent loadings, AE take-off point was identified more easily than in the first loading. In determining the compressive strength of rock mass, two factors have to be considered, namely, the size effect on the compressive strength of intact rock and the effect of discontinuities on the compressive strength of rock mass. Although a modified Bieniawski criterion gives best agreement with the triaxial test data, modifications have been suggested to Hoek-Brown criterion due to its popularity. It is possible to reduce the tensile strength of sandstone by saturating it with weak chemical solutions made with dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, polyethylene oxide and aluminium chloride by up to 30%. In the case of compressive strength, there is no appreciable effect. The possible explanation is that the chemical solutions produce an effect on the strength of sandstone only when the failure mechanism is dominated by tensile mode.

A RESUME. of some important points regarding the life of drill steel, which have so far been learned from investigations carried out in the SKF Hofors' mines, Sweden, by L. Nordenfelt, is given below. By examining all fatigue breakages which occurred in the test it has bees conclusively proved that when a rock drill of the self-rotating type is used all break-ages of this kind start from the surface of the hole in the steel. It has further been proved that the rough hole surfaces (i.e., the marks left by the indentations of the sand core), are the starting points for the fatigue cracks and that the corrosive action of the water has .a very detrimental influence on the life of the steel. It is now a well known fact that this corrosive action concentrates at the bottom of the indentations left by the sand. The corrosive action of water has been well described by U. R. Evans in his paper, "Some Recent Work on the Corrosion of Metals," delivered on March 31, 1926, before the Liverpool Engineering Society, which is quoted in part below: "It is well known that, under ordinary conditions, most metals do not corrode in water unless dissolved oxygen is present. The strange feature of corrosion in submerged metals, however, is that the attack does not proceed mainly over those portions of the surface which could be reached readily by oxygen; deterioration takes place at certain points which are relatively, inaccessible to oxygen. When. a metal becomes pitted by corrosion, further attack usually deepens the pits, and in many cases it could be proved that there was no free oxygen at the bottom of the pits. None of the older theories of corrosion explain the fact that, although oxygen is necessary for rapid corrosion to take place, the attack actually occurs at the very points which could not be reached directly by oxygen.

HASSIALIS.*-In the current flotation theories there exists a common gap spanned by a common assumption pertaining to the arrangement and orientation of the collector ions at the solid surface. Also common is the belief that contact angle and flotation performance are dependent upon the arrangement and orientation of collector ions. This stimulating and informative paper sheds some light upon this general problem. One of the indices of arrangement is the area available per collector ion; in this connection, Gaudin and Preller have applied the B.E.T. method for surface determinations. In a surprising number of cases, their results show a greater specific surface for tailing than for concentrate. This cannot be accounted for by the differences in specific gravity and is attributed to the presence of clay minerals of "primary" sluices in the tailing. This is not a satisfactory explanation, for experience shows that when free slimed clay minerals are present in a flotation cell they will be carried mechanically into the concentrate. A part of the answer to the decreased specific surface of the concentrate would appear to be its usual flocculated condition, yet this should not entirely account for the large spreads reported. The possibility occurs that the nitrogen adsorption isotherms for clean mineral and collector-coated mineral are different. If that were true, and if the coated mineral surface exhibited decreased adsorptive powers, the discrepancy might vanish. In discussing the disposition of collector ions at mineral surfaces, the authors adopt the more consistent viewpoint that there exists some agreement between the ions of the substrate and those of the superstrate. In the case of xanthate ions on galena, a possible arrangement is shown in Fig. 2. This arrangement shows every xanthate ion being shared by two lead ions, whereas the chemical composition calls for two xanthate ions for each lead ion (p. g). This whole discussion is misleading. In the first place, it is known that xanthate ions are not abstracted by unoxidized galena, hence Fig. 2 should show as the substrate not Pbs but PbS„ Om. It would be equally erroneous to use the lattice arrangement of PGSO4, since the surface properties of xanthate-conditioned anglesite differ from those of xanthated galena. It is highly probable that the state of the galena surface exploited in its flotation is ephemeral, since weathered galena is only poorly, if at all, collected by xanthate. Just how a substrate of oxidized galena is to be pictured depends upon one's conception of the transformation from galena to anglesite. This writer is inclined to the following sequence of events. Surface sulphide ions undergo progressive oxidation. As more oxygen is taken up by the sulphide ions they become displaced from their equilibrium positions in the galena lattice, thus accommodating for the larger volume of the S„ Om ions. For many years it has been known that large bodies of iron ore existed in Iron and Washington counties in Utah. The ore is chiefly hematite-both hard and soft-though some magnetite is found. No definite and complete estimate of the iron ore reserves of the state have been made. The U. S. Geological Survey estimated that 40,000,000 tons of ore were disclosed by development work averaging only 35 feet below the surface of the ore. The ore is found along an area about one and a half miles wide by twenty miles long, and for the most part on the eastern and southern slopes or foothills of Three Peaks. Granite Mountain and Iron Mountain. Later estimates by others have gone as high as ore in sight 164,000,000 tons, probable ore 300,000,000 tons and possible ore 1,000,000,000 tons. Whether this last estimate is too great or not there is sufficient iron ore in Utah to justify the starting of an iron industry. Two companies are now mining iron ore in Utah, the Columbia Steel Corporation and the Utah Iron Corporation. The mine of the Columbia Steel Corporation is at Iron Springs a few miles west of Cedar City. About 650 tons, of ore a day is being shipped to the blast furnace at Ironton. The ore is mined by the glory hole method. After being drilled it is blasted to the bottom of the several glory holes and is dropped through chutes into cars on the ore haulage level below. It is then hauled by electric locomotives to the crushing plant, where it is crushed to blast furnace size before going to storage bins. Some of the softer ore is brought to the chutes by Fresno scrapers.

The Croydon Gold Mine is located in northwest Queensland and is a joint venture between Central Coast Exploration N.L. and Pancontinental Mining Ltd. The mining operation commenced in 1987 and consists of satellite open pit mines feeding a central Carbon-In-Pulp gold Treatment Plant. The gold mineralisation is hosted by quartz veins within the Croydon Volcanic Group and the Esmeralda Granite, a cogenetic igneous suite of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralisation comprises gold and silver with associated basemetals. The gold and silver electrum occurs as extremely fine free grains. The gold distribution is heterogenous occuring across the full vein width, or restricted to the footwall or hangingwall. The average mineral resource grade is 3.5 g/t. The deposits are all hard rock and mining is carried out by drill and blast technique. All mining activity is carried out by a mining contractor. Mining is by a selective mining method which entails the drilling, blasting and extraction of the hangingwall waste prior to orebody extraction.

Supergene nickel sulphide ore mined currently by Agnew Mining Company is at times partially oxidised to sulphate. The resulting soluble nickel, and calcium and magnesium in mill water, are shown to act as depressants in flotation. The depressant effect is favourably selective in that violarite, the main nickel mineral, is less affected than pyrrhotite. Nickel recovery, however, is adversely affected, probably through reduced flotation of complex sulphides. Soda ash consumption is increased markedly by the presence of the cations as shown by operating data and pulp titration tests. A significant increase in concentrate grade, from 9% to 14% Ni, was achieved late in 1981. One of the changes in plant practice which contributed to this improvement was the addition of soda ash to mill feed rather than to flotation feed as before. It is shown by laboratory tests that this reduced the depressant effects of the cations, thereby improving recovery at the expense of rougher selectivity, or equivalently, increasing concentrate grade at constant recovery. "Abstract- The Legris Lake Complex is a northeast-trending, 7.3 km long by 3.5 km wide, maficultramafic intrusive complex located in the western Wabigoon Subprovince of the Archean Superior Province. It is one of a series of mafic-ultramafic igneous complexes, the most notable of which is the Lac des Iles Complex, host to Canada’s only producing Pd mine with reserves of 93.5 Mt grading 1.53 g/t Pd as of December 2001 (North American Palladium Ltd., Annual Report 2001). Cu-Ni- PGE mineralization was first discovered in the Legris Lake Complex by a local prospector late in 1999. Shortly thereafter, the property was jointly optioned by Avalon Ventures Ltd. and Starcore Resources Ltd., who continue to discover significant Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization.One of the most notable features of the Legris Lake Complex is the occurrence of extensive brecciation caused by multiple injections of volatile-rich magma. The Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization is hosted by leucogabbro within a 2 km long by 600 m wide, highly brecciated area in the northwestern area of the Complex. The mineralized rocks contain disseminated to blebby sulfides (1 to 5 vol.%), comprising chalcopyrite + pyrite ± pyrrhotite + millerite ± pentlandite, typically surrounded by epidote. The majority of the Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization displays low ratios of Pt/Pd (~0.20) and high ratios of Cu/Ni (~2.9), which are similar to those of the Lac des Iles and the River Valley mafic-ultramafic complexes. The lithologies in Legris Lake Complex bear similarities to the heterolithic gabbro of the Twilight and Roby Zone deposits at the nearby Lac des Iles mine. However, the mineralization at Legris Lake, which is restricted to leucogabbro overlying unmineralized clinopyroxenite, is similar to that of stratiform deposits such as the Stillwater and Munni Munni complexes. The mineralization at Legris Lake is best explained by the late-stage, immiscible separation of a sulfide melt from volatile-rich parental magmas and the subsequent minor redistribution of metals by deuteric fluids."
