AT a Meeting of the New York Section, on May 23, 1918, the sole subject of discussion was the nature and occurrence of iron ores in certain parts of the world.? Owing to the importance of this subject, it has been deemed' advisable to publish the remarks made at that meeting in the form of a paper, for presentation at the Milwaukee Meeting, instead of in the usual place, under News of Local Sections. The remarks related to the following districts: Brazil, by E. C. Harder, of the U. S. Geological Survey; Scandinavia, by Waldemar Lindgren, of the U. S. Geological Survey; Cuba, by C. M. Weld, of the U. S. Bureau 'of Mines; Southern Europe, by A. C. Spencer, of the U. S. Geological Survey; China, by H. Foster Bain, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines; Alsace-Lorraine, by Sidney Paige, of the U. S. Geological Survey. BRAZIL By E. C. Harder During the years immediately preceding the war, the iron ores of Brazil were attracting the attention of iron operators both in Europe and in the United States. This was clue to the large quantities of practically undeveloped ore available, and to its great purity. It is reasonably safe to state that had capital not been diverted from the exploitation of these deposits to war purposes, Brazilian iron ores would probably now be offered in European and American markets. It is certain that after the war these ores will play a prominent part in the economic reconstruction of Europe and perhaps in the development of America.

Papua New Guinea's mainland is dominated by a foreland thrust belt, which can be divided into two zones. The "body" zone is floored by Palaeozoic granites and metamorphics of the Fly Platform (Tasman Orogen). Underlying the "tail" zone is Papuan Plateau, rifted from the Tasman Orogen during Coral Sea spreading, and believed to underlie the Papuan Peninsula and Papuan Islands region (D'Entrecasteaux, Woodlark, Misima, Sudest, and Rossel Islands). Thrusting began in the Miocene and continues today in the crust below the "body" zone. The youngest known thrusted rocks in the "tail" zone are Pliocene in age. Recognition of foreland thrusting has major implications for petroleum prospectivity of the Papuan and North New Guinea Basins, mineral exploration prospectivity, and geological terrane identification in PNG.

Stratigraphic Position of the Deposits.—During the progress of the geological survey of Arkansas, in the northern part of that State, it was found that the interval between recognizable Lower Silurian rocks below and recognizable Lower Carboniferous rocks above contains no representatives, or but poor representatives, of the whole Upper Silurian and Devonian series. In some places one passes in the space of a foot from Lower Silurian rocks to the Lower Carboniferous—the Boone chert of the Arkansas survey, or the " Burlington " beds; at other places this interval is 3 or 4 feet thick, but it is generally concealed by the ready decay of the black shale—the Eureka shale—which fills it, so that for a long time it was passed over undetected. It was only after considerable work in the region lying north of the Boston mountains, and by the valuable palzeontologic work of Dr. Henry S. Williams, of Yale University, who kindly accompanied me on a trip through this part of the State, that the importance of this interval came to be recognized, and the thin beds occupying it to be critically studied. It then appeared that this interval was occupied, for the most part, either by a greenish or black shale or by a sandstone; and eventually the sandstone was found to have a maximum thickness of 40 feet on South Sylamore creek in 15 N. 11 W., Section 21. It was, therefore, called Sylamore sandstone. The shale of this interval is generally from 3 to 10 feet thick; it is a constant feature of the geology through Carroll county, and is well exposed in the streets and cuts in and about Eureka Springe, and was for this reason named the Eureka shale. Its maximum thickness is 50 feet in the northwestern part of Benton county. The relations to each other of the Sylamore sandstone and the Eureka shale I have never determined satisfactorily; for

This paper summarizes flyrock and blast area security fatalities from 1989 to 1999 and examines the causative factors. Coal and nonmetal mining used about 43 billion pounds of explosives and blasting agents between1989 to 1999. A majority of this consumption was used at surface mines. Accident data indicates that flyrock and lack of blast area security were the primary causes of blasting related injuries in surface mining. Fatal injuries due to lack of blast area security were attributed to: failure to clear blast area; failure to follow instructions; inadequate guarding; inadequate blasting shelter; and unsafe location.

W. H. BLAUVELT (author's reply to discussion *).-The prevention of smoke from byproduct-oven plants is not as simple as would appear from Mr. Moss's statement. All well designed byproduct-oven plants are equipped with ample exhauster capacity, and the suction on the ovens is controlled by highly sensitive pressure governors that control the pressure within a fraction of a millimeter. Of course, this apparatus can get out of order, causing the batteries to smoke, but this does not often happen. As stated by Mr. Thompson, the smoke produced is made almost entirely during the time of charging the ovens, when they are cut off from the hydraulic main. The amount of smoke that escapes at this time is extremely small, compared with -the amount produced by a beehive-oven plant, but the mechanical difficulties in preventing any escape of smoke at charging time are considerable. The Oklahoma City Wilcox sand, discovered on March 26, 1930, has produced 394 million barrels of crude oil and 819 billion cubic feet of natural gas as of July I, 1941. The 100,000-bbl. wells, pressures of 2600 lb. per sq. in., and flows of "Wilcox" sand caused exciting moments in the early life of the field. Today the reservoir is substantially at atmospheric pressure and produccs 75,000 bbl. of crude oil daily through 466 pumping wells. Early estimates of the initial crude-oil content of the "Wilcox" sand1 indicated that about 600 million barrels of crude oil would remain after the pumping wells ceased to produce economically. The Oklahoma City Wilcox Secondary Recovery Association was organized in March 1939, to study the possibilities of recovering a portion of this oil. Only a very brief summary of the information available can be presented in a paper of this nature. Some simplifications and generalizations are necessary to give the over-all picture in SO short a space and statements made may not apply to a specific well or small area. Since the area under consideration by the Association is that north of the south line of section 22-11-3, some information will be presented for areas A, B, C, 1, 2, 3 and part of 4 of Fig. 2, and some will be for the entire Wilcox zone west of the fault. This paper is essentially an abstract of an engineering report made by A. D. Small, B. T. Murphree, M. C. Sons and the author for the Oklahoma City Wilcox Secondary Recovery Association on Sept. 5, 1940. Some information is taken from a report to the Association by C. V. Sidwell on March I, 1940, and some data are from a recent report by A. D. Small. It gives a brief history of the Wilcox zone, estimates of the initial oil contents of the reservoir, present conditions in the reservoir, and probable results from several programs of "secondary recovery." History of Wilcox Zone The Wilcox sand lies on the flank of the general structure, as shown by cross section of Fig. I2,3,4 and areal map of Fig. 2. The sand is of Ordovician age and is composed of well assorted, rounded sand grains with no apparent cementing material. The loose texture of the sand is shown by the enormous quantities of sand production from the wells and from the soft cores. The productive sand varies from zero thickness on the east to 220 ft. maximum and to zero thickness on the west because of water. The development of the pool4 as dependent upon drilling restrictions within the city limits, which accounts for the spacing of drilling operations listed in Table I by years. In 1931, areas I through 7 of Fig. 2 were open for drilling with the exception of some west-edge properties, and all wells drilled before Feb. I, 1935, were in this portion of the field. Nearly all wells drilled from 1933 to 1037 were in areas A, B and C. Since 1939, the newly drilled wells have gradually enlarged the producing area toward the west in the northern portion.

The resist profile simulation is carried out using the combined data obtained. The nematic liquid crystal is clear only when a long range order exists, in the whole medium. using the Jones matrix method. Director can change from point to point and is, in general, a function of space. Details of the lens structure and of the devices fabrication and performance are described. Light from conventional light source or laser is passed through a polarizer and then incident on the specimen At the nematicisotropic, transition temperature, the medium becomes isotropic and looks clear and transparent. The transition can be approached by changing the impurity concentration or, indirectly, by tuning the temperature since the pinning strengths of the random and crystal potential have in general a different temperature dependence.

The much-heralded Deep Ruth operation of Kennecott Copper Corp., at Ruth, Nev., is scheduled to become a producer by 1957. Inaugurated as a project in 1951, production was originally scheduled to start in 1953, but excessive water hindered shaft sinking. A revised schedule called for output by 1955, but again plans had to be changed. This time the change was to permit mining of an orebody that would have otherwise been lost because of block caving methods planned for the main deposit. The new ore is within the cave limits of the larger orebody, above the first production level. Ore will start coming from this new source in 1956, a year ahead of the principal operation. (See NEWS, page 344.) There is little doubt that current economic conditions and unforeseen expenditures for early shaft development will make the Deep Ruth a high-cost producer. Yet, some of the drawbacks of the Kennecott operation may be mitigated by the possibility that additional exploration will increase the already assured 25 million tons of 0.83 pet copper ore. While Kennecott is missing out on the current high copper market and is thus left with a potentially narrowed profit, the predicted demand for copper has created an optimistic feeling. Its development is certain to enlarge known U. S. copper reserves and significantly extend the life of Kennecott's Nevada operations.

INTRODUCTION One of the most important decisions involved in the design of an open pit mine is the selection of a slope angle. Despite this fact, engineering procedures have developed slowly in this field. Only recently have the instruments and know-how become available to undertake a design based on sound engineering principles. The effect of blasting on open pit slope stability is one aspect in which the state of the art has not developed fully. These effects include: a) the effects of the ground motion associated with blast waves on slope stability, and b) the fracturing of rock in the vicinity of slopes caused by blast waves. Natural rock jointing plays an important role in both of these. SUMMARY OF BLASTING EFFECTS In recent years there has been a trend to larger sizes of blast holes in open pits to the extent that today 9% in. and 12% in. diam. holes are the most common. The reasons for this have been economic. Larger machines are more efficient and produce at a lower overall cost per ton. As the size of blast holes have increased, so have the other factors associated with blasting. Bench heights have increased, the tons/ft. of hole yield has risen significantly and the explosive load per hole has increased. Quite naturally the rupture radius for a single blast hole has increased along with the vibration level produced per blast hole. Open pit blasting operations can result in two types of unwanted damage: 1. Damage to structures, such as buildings, dams and slopes by ground vibrations initiated by the blast. 2. Fracturing of ground beyond the planned excavation limits. Let us first consider item one. Vibration effects are determined by the type of blast which is fired and the type of medium through which the blast wave is being transmitted. They are strongly influenced by the weight of charge per hole, the number of holes per delay, the distance from the shot point, the mode of initiation, the point of interest relative to the blast, etc.

ELECTRICAL prospecting by potential methods has been applied to mining problems for some years and determinations of the depth to bed rock have been made, but so far as is known it has not been used previously in the solution of civil engineering problems, such as investigating the foundations of dams. During the past winter and spring the senior author has been engaged as consulting geologist in studying the site of a large darn on the upper Connecticut River and has had the satisfaction of introducing electrical prospecting to foundation problems. The valley across which the dam is to be built is underlaid by a deeply buried preglacial gorge which is filled with glacial deposits. An extensive drilling campaign was in progress, but the work was unusually slow and expensive on account of the number of boulders in the overburden. The necessity of speeding up the work was pressing and it was decided that much of the needed information could be obtained by geophysical methods. After investigating the various methods and conferring with the company engineers and with the consulting engineer, Albert Crane, a contract was made with the Schlumberger Electrical Prospecting Methods, and an observer with apparatus was sent to the dam site the first of April, 1928. The problem was to determine the depth to rock at various points in order to prepare a contour map of the bed-rock surface and outline the buried gorge in the vicinity of the dam site. Over one hundred determinations of depth have been made and the bed-rock topography, is now known in considerable detail. In addition, some information has been obtained about the nature of the overburden. The drilling has been continued; in fact, two additional drills have been put to work, and the electrical determinations have been checked at several points. At one of these the depth to rock given by the electrical work was 142 ft. and the drill found rock at 147 ft., an error of less than 4 per cent. The electrical work has also been checked by the geological study, and it has been found that when the electrical determinations are in agreement with the geological expectations they are probably reasonably accurate. W. G. MITCHELL,* New York, N. Y.-I quite agree with Mr. Wilson1 in the statement that the Bonanza copper orebodies of the Jerome District are definitely pre-Cambrian. You might go much further than that. It is an interesting fact and, I think, well substantiated that the chalcocite enrichment is pre-Cambrian, and in that particular the deposits are unique, so far as I know, among copper-ore deposits. It is certainly true, under my scheme of classification, at least, and I think it has been supported by the work of Mr. Reber of the United Verde Extension, that chalcocitization was entirely accomplished prior to the laying down of the Cambrian sediments. The statement of Mr. Wilson that no Yavapai schist, as defined by Jagger and Palache, has been found in the Jerome District and that the schist in Jerome is composed entirely of ancient intrusive and extrusive volcanic rocks and bedded tuffs is one with which I am not entirely in accord. I believe that it is true that the schists at Jerome are largely composed of bedded volcanic material, I am also certain that there is a considerable proportion of plastic material in those schists. I have seen a good many slides, and it is quite common to find quartzites and limestones in the schists. At a short distance from Jerome, at the Arizona Binghamton, there are limestone strata in the schists several feet in thickness, and unmistakably a part of the original sediments as laid down. Another statement of Mr. Wilson is supported by my own observations. In the United Verde mine included fragments of sulfide ore are found in later anthracite dikes, which cut the orebodies but do not invade the chalcocite sediments. This is not only true, but those fragments of sulfide ore that are of small size, from the size of a walnut to fragments 2 and 3 ft. in diameter, are of the original unenriched pyritic material. I have never found high-grade ore, either chalcopyrite or chalcocite, in any of those dikes.

In the assay of copper-bearing material for gold and silver, the elimination of copper before the final cupellation is of course essential, because any copper left in the lead-button will carry gold into the cupel; and a method which will effectively remove the copper with the smallest amount of manipullation is desirable. The scorification method is often rendered long and tedious by the necessity of repeatedly re-scorifying the button— to say nothing of the risk of losing Au—Ag thereby incurred. An ore carrying, for instance, 10 per cent,. of copper and only 0.1 or 0.2 oz. gold per ton, cannot be scorified with accurate results, because so many portions would have to be taken in order to get enough gold for weighing. On the other hand, the crucible method, with potassic nitrate and nails, would not do at all in such a case, because all the copper would be reduced by the nails, and (if the charge were 0.5 A. T.) this would defeat cupellation, by causing cupel-absorption of gold. In matte-assays, more concentrated value permits the determination of gold from smaller portions, and thus diminishes the difficulty experienced with ores. The method here described has been severely tested, during use for more than a year, and hart never failed hitherto, in the assay of any ore or product to which it has been applied. It is not proposed as perfect for every variety of ore or matte—probably no method would be that; but it is believed that, intelligently used, with the modifications dictated by practice, it will give better results, with less expenditure of time and labor, than any other known to the writer.

"A Product from Mica Mines.Mica commonly occurs in pegmatites which consist of large crystals of feldspar and quartz, mica constituting but a small proportion of the total rockMuch of the feldspar thus thro n out during the process of mining is pure and of high quality, end the Bureau of Mines has suggested that much of it could be utilized for ceramic purposes. Encouragement is given to such utilization by the fact that several mines now worked for mica were formerly operated for the production of feldspar. ""'here mines are not readily accessible to railroads feldspar utilization might not be feasible, for it is a much lower priced product than mica and cannot therefore bear as heavy transportation expense. '""here mines ire located close to railroads, however, such utilization would tend to reduce the cost of mica mining, and at the same time assist in the solution of the waste disposal problem.The Bureau has recently been informed that some of the feldspar from mica mines near Spruce Pine, N.C., is now being sold and shipped away. An extension of this by-product industry is to be recommended.A Mica Deposit in New York City.The Bureau recently received a mica specimen obtained from a. building excavation at 157th St. and Riverside Drive, New York City. The specimen was about 2 by 4 inches in size, and fairly clear though containing numerous hair cracks. It was obtained only 7 or 8 feet below street level. At greater depth and with more careful methods of excavation material of much better quality might be obtained. The material submitted could be used for mica washers but not for sheet mica. It is stated by an official of a prominent mica company that many such fragments are obtainable in this locality and the possibility of the occurrence of a good mica vein is thereby suggested."
