This survey is one of the more recent tests of geophysical methods of prospecting by the Dominion Observatory and the Geological Survey of Canada, of which the purpose is to find out what application such methods may have to geological problems in Canada. The Malagash salt deposit lies on the north shore of Nova Scotia about 40 miles east of the New Brunswick boundary, arid forms a part of faulted and folded Carboniferous strata. The salt beds are exposed only in the mine workings, which are about 1000 ft. deep and at one place extend for 1000 ft. along the strike. Lack of rock exposures, complicated folds, and faults make it impossible to predict the location of salt away from the mine. A survey of an area in the vicinity of the mine was therefore undertaken to find out whether the salt could be located by the torsion balance and whether its extension from the mine workings could be traced. As the gravitational effects at Malagash may be fairly typical of those at other concealed salt deposits in the Carboniferous rocks of the Maritime Provinces of Canada, the survey has a direct bearing on prospecting for other deposits. The preparation of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-monolayer-protected clusters (PNIPAM-MPC) of gold nanoparticles was carried out in a homogeneous phase using three ways, in which three types of PNIPAM ligands were employed. The first type comprised of PNIPAMs with narrow molar mass distributions, synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and thus, bearing a dithiobenzoate at the chain end. These polymers were used directly to passivate the gold nanoparticles upon the Schiffrin reaction in a one-pot synthesis. The second type of ligands was derived from the first one through hydrazinolysis, and they therefore contained a thiol end group. The third type of ligands was PNIPAMs obtained through conventional radical polymerization, post-modified to contain thiol end groups. The PNIPAM-MPCs were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and by dynamic light scattering. The one-pot synthesis utilizing the ligands of the first type turned out to be a simple and facile method, compared with the other two ways, with which the size of the gold nanoparticles can be easily manipulated mainly by adjusting the molar ratios of PNIPAM / HAuCl4. PNIPAM is a more efficient ligand to stabilize the gold nanoparticles in water and in organic solvents than alkanethiols. The surface density of PNIPAM chains ranged from 1.8 to 3.6 chain/nm2, which is much lower than that typical for alkanethiols. The thickness of a PNIPAM monolayer bound to the gold core is somewhat larger than the size of the random coil of corresponding free PNIPAM in aqueous solution, which suggests that the conformation of a PNIPAM chain bound to the gold core is to extended.

Since 1955 extensive pressure-leaching testwork has been conducted by Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL) in laboratory-scale batch autoclaves. In 1958asmall continuous pilot-plantof45 kgofsolids per hourwas operated by AARL. In 1974, when high uranium prices were anticipated, Anglo American, encouraged by successful commercial- scale autoclave operations as practised by Outokumpu, Sherritt Gordon, and Impala Platinum, decided to install a continuous pilot plant at Western Deep Levels. At that time the proposed pilot plant was considered to be of prototype size. The project was funded by members of the Nuclear Fuels Corporation (Nufcor). Since its commissioning in February 1977, the pilot plant at Western Deep Levels, which can treat between 10 and 20 tons of dry solids per hour, has been used to test ores from four different mines. The paper compares the uranium extractions and pyrite oxidation obtained in laboratory batch autoclaves with those obtained in the continuous pilot plant. In general, differences in uranium extraction are not great and can be explained; the differences in pyrite oxidation are less well understood. The effect on plant design of the evolution of carbon dioxide during leaching is discussed. Evaluation of the equipment and materials of construction would have been almost impossible in a small-scale batch autoclave. It is doubtful whether such results would have generated the necessary confidence to permit decisions to install a commercial-size plant. The development and performance of the multistage pumps, instrumentation, shaft seals, and shaft-seal water treatment are discussed. It is concluded that the operation of a largescale continuous pressure-leaching pilot plant to supplement laboratory batch autoclave tests has been a necessary part of the development of this process.

This paper is the second of a series treating the relations of ores of the metals to igneous rocks. In the first paper1 the general problem was outlined and the normal downward changes in metalliferous lodes were briefly stated, with references to earlier papers treating the relations of ores to depths of their formation. The present paper by a number of examples illustrates the relations treated in the first paper. These examples are chosen chiefly from the larger mining districts because their underground developments are more extensive, but the same relations are shown in maps of scores of undeveloped areas in which the main geological conditions are nearly similar. Ecology of Metalliferous Deposits Ore deposits are divided into three groups: 1, Those formed by sedimentary processes; 2, those deposited by meteoric waters; and, 3, those formed in connection with igneous processes. The last group is the most important. It includes the magmatic segregations, which are igneous rocks in the strict sense, and the veins and related deposits, which were formed by precipitation in channels from solutions originating in cooling intrusives. These deposits may be divided into two groups: 1. Those related to intrusives as basic as diorite; and, 2, those related to intrusives more acid than diorite. The second group probably includes more than 95 per cent. of all lode ores. Nearly all of the ores of this group are associated with granitic batholiths or are in positions where it is reasonable to suppose that such a batholith, not yet exposed by erosion, underlies the area containing the deposits. A conceptual model (MAGSEP) is described to simulate the beneficiation characteristics of a drum magnetic separator in terms of the probability of an individual grain being recovered in the magnetic concentrate. This probability is determined as a function of particle magnetic composition and magnetic field strength and is modified by particle size and the separator operating conditions. The model predicts the size, magnetic grade and distributions of magnetic and gangue minerals in the concentrate and tailings produced by the drum separator. The configuration of the magnetic concentration circuit may be altered to permit single or double drum units in parallel or series operation. The characteristics of the feed material, in terms of a magnetic parameter, are essential in permitting the determination of individual grain recovery probabilities upon which the model is based. Thus the model requires input data relating to the distribution of composite grains in terms of magnetic grade and particle size. To illustrate the use of the conceptual model an example is given for the beneficiation of New Zealand iron sands.

Studies carried out over the last 10 years reveal that precipitating particles which may appear in alkaline solutions of long-chain amines and in acidic solutions of fatty acids exhibit clear isoelectric points around pH 10.6-1 1 for dodecylamine and around pH 2.5-3 for fatty acids. These colloidal species can accumulate at solid/liquid and liquid/gas interfaces and affect flotation. While the precipitate in solutions of fatty acids apparently can chemically interact with the mineral surfaces and is flotation-active if sufficiently long conditioning time is available, the cationic flotation of quartz in alkaline solutions is depressed by the colloidal precipitate. The experimental data available in literature on the adsorption, electrokinetic, contact angle and surface forces measurements in the solutions of the weak electrolyte collectors are analyzed and the role played by the precipitate is discussed. It is shown that these concepts allow for an explanation of the selective flotation of sylvite from halite with long-chain amines in potash ore flotation.

THE John Darling Colliery, owned by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, is situated 12 miles south of Neweastle, NSW and about 1 mile from the ocean. The area of the holding is approximately 10,000 acres, about half of which underlies the Pacific Ocean. The area was proved to be coal bearing by diamond drill boring: this method not only proved the coal to exist, but gave the depths from which could be calculated. It also proved the existence or otherwise of heavy faulting, which is a very important factor in the design of the underground lay-out of a mine. The location of shafts had to be carefuIly studied, and, before final selection, the following salient points had to be considered:Railway communications.Flood waters.Boiler feed water.Surface buildings.Probability of coal washing.Underground haulage arrangements.Lengths of roadways from a ventilating viewpoint.Before the shaft sites were finally selected, an underground design was prepared to determine the direction of the main drives in relation to the boundaries of the holding, and the of the coal seam: the latter, being an important factor in this particular locality, was ascertained by a geological survey of rock outcrops in the neighbourhood. The most generally accepted equilibrium diagram for A1-Fe alloys has a eutectic system on the aluminum side with an essentially insoluble constituent of the formula, FeAl,, as the second phase. In 1938, Bradley and Taylor1 did report a phase change of FeAl,, but this change has never been confirmed. According to them, FeA1, is the stable phase only at higher temperatures; at lower temperatures, it is converted into Fe2Al7 and aluminum. It has now been found that there is, in fact, a phase change of the Al-Fe constituent on the aluminum side of the equilibrium diagram. This change, however, is not the one reported by Bradley and Taylor. The alloys used were cast by continuous processes and had these analyses: Fe - 1.98 to 2.02 pct, Cu-0.01 pct, Si - 0.01 pct, Mn - 0.01 pct, Mg - 0.00 pct, Zn - 0.00 to 0.01 pct, Cr - 0.00 pet, Ti - 0.00 to 0.04 pct. The constituent in these alloys was identified by X-ray analysis with a Guinier camera and by chemical and X-ray powder diffraction analyses. Two procedures were used to separate constituent for the last two analyses. In one procedure, it was separated by treating a sample with a solution of methanol saturated with iodine. And in the other procedure, it was separated by first applying, at 12 amp per sq ft in 15 pct sulfuric acid at 70°F, an oxide coating to a sample, and then dissolving this coating in a solution of 35 ml of 85 pct H3PO4 and 20 g of CrO3 per liter. Several observations directed attention to a phase change of the A1-Fe constituent. Differences that appeared too great to be accounted for by micro-structure alone were found in the voltages required to apply the same thickness of an oxide coating to products from rapidly and slowly chilled ingot. Even more striking was the difference in appearance of the coatings themselves. One applied to a product from a rapidly chilled ingot was dark gray in appearance, in fact, almost black, while one applied to a product from a slowly chilled ingot was essentially white. The Raymond Memorial Volume, which the Members of the In-stitute have been so anxiously awaiting since the beloved man's death, is nearly ready for publication. It will contain about 45,000 words and some illustrations and a frontispiece portrait. This book promises to fill every expectation of the contributors to the volume and the host of admirers of the genius who so long guided the destiny of the Institute. It will contain one of Doctor Raymond's best stories, entitled "James and Jim;" his famous article on "Job on Mining;" and one of his poems entitled "The Grand Canyon." A biography of Doctor Raymond has been written by his daughter, who is the wife of a member of the Institute. The memorial addresses delivered by Dr. Henry F. Drinker and T. A. Rickard at the annual meeting in New York in 1919 will be included. There will also be very interesting reminiscences by H. M. Howe, A. S. Dwight, C. W. Goodale, R. W. Hunt, Lyman Abbott, J. F. hemp, T. A. Rickard. The volume has been edited by T. A. Rickard, which promises all that can be wished for the volume from a literary standpoint. The edition will he limited so that it is very desirable that orders for this volume be sent in to the Institute as promptly as possible. The price will be $5.00.

Interfacial tension divided by the difference in density between the liquid and the vapor phases was determined experimentally by the pendant drop method on several isotherms in the two phase region below the critical point for the methane-normal decane system. The density difference data of Sage and Lacey was used in the calculation of interfacial tension. Both interfacial tension and and interfacial tension divided by density difference were found to vanish at the critical point. Interfacial tensions of less than one dyne/centimeter were observed as far as 1,000 pounds per square inch below the critical pressure. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The interfacial tension divided by the density difference for the methane-normal decane system was determined at the 100°, 130°, 160' and 190°F isotherms, from pressures of about 1,000 psi to the critical pressure, which is more than 5,000 psi for these isotherms. Particular emphasis was placed upon the investigation at pressures slightly below the critical pressure where the interfacial tension is less than 0.5 dyne/cm. Volumetric properties in the two-phase region, including the critical pressures and temperatures, were taken from the work of Sage and Lacey.1 The experimental pendant-drop technique used for the determination of interfacial tensions at high pressures incorporated the ideas of Michaels and Hauser,2 Hough, et a1,3 Walker4 and Heuer.5 In addition, the technique for determination of extremely small interfacial tension by Jennings6 was utilized in the region near the critical points. A detailed description of the apparatus is given in a dissertation by one of the authors.7 Cleaning operations on the stainless-steel sample system included successive washings with chromic acid, tap water and, finally, distilled water. Subsequent cleanings were performed with re-distilled normal pentane, which had an extremely low residue upon evaporation. Specific composition requirements necessitated a fairly precise sample introduction — although, fora two-phase, two-component system, the composition of each phase is completely determined if pressure and temperature are controlled. The normal decane was delivered into the evacuated sample system as a liquid from a burette. The methane was then introduced into the system from a calibrated isothermal container, so that pressure differentials could be used to determine the amount introduced. High pressures were obtained by compressing the sample with a mercury injection pump until the critical pressure was reached for the particular isotherm being studied. Experimental data were then obtained for specific pressures by first decreasing the pressure slightly so that two phases would appear, and then photographing a drop at that pressure. WHEN the National Forests Were created, all lands embraced in their boundaries were exempted from all forms of entry, except mineral claims. Later, by Act of June 11, 1906, and as amended by Act of Aug. 10, 1912, provision was made allowing homesteads on areas chiefly valuable for agriculture and not necessary for the public use. Patents to mining claim in the Forests are granted the same as on land not in the Forests, irrespective of timber or other values. It is the policy to encourage the highest use of the Forests. As a business proposition, it is a good policy to have mines developed in the Forests. Their development in remote or inaccessible regions causes the country to be opened up and, in addition to the local market which the mines create, means of transportation are afforded to outside markets. No examination of mining claims is made until patent has been applied for, unless they are actively interfering with the administration of the Forest. In this case, an examination is made, and if there is evidence that the claims are being held in good faith they are in no way interfered with. Timber is never sold from a mining claim except with the consent of the claimant, or unless it is clearly shown, after an examination, that the claim is abandoned. In the case of fire-killed timber, which rapidly deteriorates by standing, a contract bond arrangement can be made for the sale of the timber which protects the interests of both the mining claimant and the government. The promiscuous locating of mining claims has in the past caused considerable trouble. It has been, and still is, the custom in some parts of the West to locate a mining claim when the surface rights of any particular area are desired, irrespective of the mineral character of the ground. This has been done to hold power sites, town sites, summer residences, springs, etc. When the, ground is desired for any of these purposes, what is known as a Special Use Permit will be issued at a nominal sum, to legalize the occupancy. In most instances, it is far cheaper to take out one of these permits than to do the annual assessment

THE phase Ti2Ni has been described by Laves and Wallbaum,1 who found the phase to be face-centered cubic with 96 atoms per cell, by Duwez and Taylor,2 who confirmed these observations and reported a lattice parameter of 11.333A, and by Rostoker,' who reported the structure to be isomorphous with the double carbide Fe,W,C, type E93, and to have a lattice parameter of 11.29A. In this study a group of isostructural phases has been found among alloys of certain second and third long-period transition elements. The systems investigated included all the combinations of zirconium and hafnium with the Group VIII elements rhodium, palladium, iridium, and platinum. There is evidence that many of these new Ti2Ni-type phases require oxygen for their stability in the temperature ranges in which they were studied. Namibia is one of Africa's newest nations. A German colony until 1915, it then became a South African protectorate until 1990, when it gained independence after an armed struggle that lasted more than two decades. However, no trace of past bitterness can be found today in the capital, Windhoek, or in the countryside. Namibia is now one of the safest parts of Africa. Namibia's industrial base and infrastructure have been untouched by war. Swapo, the ruling party, has embarked on a successful policy of reconciliation and economic development. The GNP per capita is a surprising $1500 (from the World Bank), one of the highest in Africa. Namibia's population stands at 1.3 million, including about 100,000 whites. Namibia is a very sparsely populated country (1.7 inhabitants per km2). About 70% of the people are farmers. Namibia has a surface area of 824,232 km2 (318,261 sq miles), about the size of France and Germany combined. The semi-arid climate and generally flat morphology make the country well suited to mineral exploration. About 40% of the country presents abundant rock outcrops. The rest is buried under the Kalahari sands. However, this cover in most of the country hardly exceeds 200 m (655 ft), and Australian technology has shown that large mineral deposits (Roxby Downs) can nowadays be found at even greater depths. Mining is Namibia's largest industry. In 1991, it accounted for 22% of the country's GDP, about 70% to 80% of its exports by value and 25% of internally generated government revenues. The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) is responsible for formulating and implementing national mineral policies. This agency has recently introduced legislation aimed at encouraging new and long-term investment in the mineral sector. The variety of Namibian mineral resources, both metallic and nonmetallic, is rivaled by few countries worldwide.

The paper by M. Lonoff looks at the importance of byproduct prices on copper production. The paper develops several interesting points on this topic, but there are some points in the theoretical discussion that could use further development. A couple of these theoretical topics will be considered here using the paper's framework of assumptions without concern about how realistic the assumptions are for the copper industry. Lonoff’s theoretical model is based on a static, homogenous world where all copper/byproduct deposits are identical, and these deposits are the main source of these metals. Due to the importance of the byproducts to the production decision, the term coproducts will be substituted for the term byproducts to reflect more accurately this condition. The conclusion is drawn that a rise in coproduct prices necessitates a decrease in copper prices because copper production is increased as a consequence of increased coproduct production. The observation that real world behavior does not always follow this pattern is dismissed as "speculation." However, it can be easily shown that within this simple framework market forces might create the observed behavior. The key question to be answered is what causes coproduct prices to rise. Three possible cases will be used as illustrations. The first case is the one implicity assumed by Lonoff. Here, the demand for coproducts increases at all prices (an outward parallel shift of the demand curve) with the demand for copper remaining constant. As reported in the paper, the results are higher coproduct prices, an increase in coproduct production, and lower copper prices due to the resulting increase in copper production. SO Milling Practice............................ 84 Power Plant............................... 96 Construction Costs.......................... 97 Geological Conditions The Elko Prince mine is in the Gold Circle district, Nevada, about 155 miles (2. 4 km.) from the town of Midas, 55 miles (88.5 km.) west of Battle Mountain and 50 miles (8.5 km.) northeast of Golconda. The district is described by Emmons in U. S. Geological Survey Bulletin 408, 1910. Little was said of the Elko Prince, however, as only a small amount of work had then been completed. The geological structure of the region is simple. The oldest exposed formation, covering most of the area, is rhyolite, which has a light-colored devitrified groundmass enclosing phenocrysts of feldspar, quartz, and magnetite. It has been somewhat weathered and partially stained with oxide of iron. There are several outcrops of andesite which cut the rhyolite. The ore deposits occur as fissure veins, replacement veins, and sheeted zones. The Elko Prince vein is of the first type. The rhyolite near the veins is silicified, stained with oxide of iron, and, at some localities, replaced by ore, or is so permeated by metals as to be classed as ore. The vein filling consists chiefly of quartz, and the values consist entirely of gold and silver. Part of the gold exists as the native metal and part is associated with pyrite. Silver occurs free and as argentite in banded streaks through the vein. These veins trend in a northwesterly direction, with dips varying from 65' to vertical. The principle underlying the majority of magnetic intensity variometers is a comparison of the force to be measured with another force of known magnitude. The known force may be (a) of a magnetic nature, such as magnetic fields produced by magnets or coils, or (b) of a mechanical nature, such as (1) the elastic forces of wires, or (2) the force of gravity, such as employed in bifilar magnetometers and magnetic balances. In instruments of such type, usually a magnetic system is employed, free to move about either a horizontal or vertical axis, on some sort of a suspension. If the earth's magnetic field alone were present, such a system would adjust itself into the direction of the field or that of its components. Owing to the simultaneous action of the comparison force, however, the magnetic needle assumes a position that differs from the direction of the magnetic force; for all such instruments, the angle of deflection is given by tan = FIX, where F is the known and X the unknown earth magnetic force component. In other words, the magnetic system merely serves as an "indicator" for the position of balance of the two forces. Considering the matter from this point of view, it is not immediately obvious why the temperature of such a magnetic system should modify the results. In magnetic instruments, we may distinguish two different effects of temperature: (1) a magnetic effect and (2) a mechanical effect. The first is due to the fact that the magnetic moment of a magnet drops with an increase in temperature. This drop is characterized by the temperature coefficient of the magnetic moment (see equation 1). The second effect is due to the change in the torsion of suspension wires with temperature or to the expansion of lever arms of masses acting on magnetic balances.

This paper is concerned with the details of the derivation of an operations research model, specifically linear programming, to solve production scheduling problems. While some results are presented for an actual study, the calculation of cases of a more general nature have not yet been completed. Production managers from those segments of the mining industry that experience a seasonal or highly variable sales demand find it rather difficult to develop overall producing plans for their organizations. In an attempt to solve this technical problem, demands are usually met by keeping production corresponding exactly to sales. This results in a fluctuating production schedule which is costly to maintain because of overtime premiums in periods of high requirements and because of costs associated with an idle mine plant during slack periods. An alternate solution may be to produce part of the desired amount and make up any deficiencies by using overproduction in previous time periods. This tends to smooth the production pattern through the use of a stockpile. However, because of associated storage costs, the solution may again be undesirable if it yields comparatively large surpluses. In general, this type of scheduling problem has an infinite number of solutions which satisfy the requirements. These are largely dependent on the extent to which an operation is geared to changes in production and on the size of its stockpiling facility. The determination of an efficient schedule is implied, therefore, as one lying between two extreme solutions, i.e., one that minimizes surpluses and one that minimizes output fluctuations. These conflicting objectives result in an economic balance problem between the costs of carrying surpluses forward from slack periods versus the cost of high production levels during peak demands. Various methods of operations research have been developed to handle problems whose genesis is explained above. It is very seldom, however, that these quantitative means are used in practice by the mining industry. Those who are familiar with mining operations know that most managers have not progressed satisfactorily in this area. Production planning systems which most mines employ today are often no more than rough records of management's mental planning. For small mines these means are normally sufficient; but as operations grow larger and become more complex, this type of planning ability is no longer adequate. Managers may find themselves losing control of cost relationships, taking longer to outline production sequences, and becoming forgetful of certain resource availabilities. ORIGIN AND SCOPE OF A SCHEDULING PROBLEM The more fundamental aspects of the production scheduling problem can be brought into focus by demonstrating how it exists in a bituminous coal mine* located in southwestern Pennsylvania. This mine, operating in the Pittsburgh seam, uses a definite room-and-pillar block system of mining, which is planned and carried out with only slight variations to meet local conditions. The coal seam, which is firm and varying in thickness from 8 to 9 ft with the bottom 6% ft being extracted, is under 500 ft of cover and opened by a shaft. The bulk of the coal (60%) is obtained from the pillaring activity with the mains and sections, which are considered primarily as development activities, contributing the balance of 12% and 28%, respectively. All coal is won by a ripper-type continuous miner in conjunction with shuttle-cars directly behind a loading machine. Track haulage is employed to move coal from these machine centers to the shaft bottom. The coal, thus mined, is shipped to one destination as part of a mixture of coals to be used in the making of steel. A material flow diagram of this distribution scheme is illustrated in Fig. 1. PROBLEM STATEMENT From the above types of shipments and mining limitations, the basic problem is to determine an economic means of producing and stockpiling a single coal product produced in three different machine centers (main, section, and pillar).
