"The zinc deposits to be described are in Lemieux township a few miles south of the Tabletop mountains, in the central part of Gaspe peninsula, Quebec. Although they have not been worked, they constitute a potential source of zinc and lead and structurally are of considerable interest.GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE OCCURRENCEThe deposits are in sharp-walled quartz-carbonate veins and breccia zones carrying locally, and in varying amounts, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and specularite. Those so far investigated strike generally north-south, have steep dips, and cut through sediments of Lower Devonian age, mostly calcareous argillites or siltstones. Wall-rock alteration is negligible.BROADER STRUCTURAL FEATURESThe principal known occurrences are in the south-central part of a dome structure measuring 6 by 5 miles. The argillaceous sediments are overlain, on the flanks of the dome, by sandstones and lavas. These have been stripped from the central part of the dome, revealing the veins in the argillites beneath. The veins formed after the volcanics, but the fractures and breccia zones in which the deposits formed are confined mainly to the argillite series, presumably because of the greater strength of the lavas.The argillite series is cut by dykes, sills, and small stocks of diorite and acidic 'porphyries' that are older than the veins.THE FEDERAL HILL AREAThe distribution of known veins is shown in Fig. 1. A. E. ROSS*—Mr. Armstrong in his paper stated that they had experienced considerable difficulty in drilling the quartz-feldspar intergrowths. The dia-mor~d loss was excessive and the diamond bits polished quite rapidly. Mr. Davidson, who presented the paper, stated that bortx stones in the range of 20 to 30 per carat had been used in the bits on this job. I would like to suggest the use of bits employing stones in the range of 60 to 100 per carat, an average of possibly 80 per carat. If these stones had been used the bits might have lasted longer and not polished so quickly. As a basis for this suggestion I would like to point out that in northern New York State we had at least two examples where bits employing stones in the range of 80 per carat had solved a difficult problem. Bits set with stones in the range of 20 to 30 per carat had been used previously and had failed. With the finer stones, the cost per foot of drilling decreased material1y. It should also be noted from a technical standpoint that the smaller stones require higher drilling speeds than the larger stones. Greater pressures are not normally necessary, and it is the higher speed which seems to be the major factor of importance. It should also be noted that the finer stones afford a greater number or cutting surfaces for the same carat weight in a bit. Then too, the smaller stones, by virtue of their size, serve as sharper cutting edges than larger stones. There is no doubt that the diamond bit employing smaller stones costs more to set than the bit using larger stones. However, with the technique developed at the shops of Sprague and Henwood, Inc., we feel that the relatively slight additional cost required to set these bits is more than paid for by the resultant lower drilling cost. We feel that the highest quality stone available is the most economical to use when hard fine grained rock is encountered. In summary, I would suggest that it might be possible to solve the problem presented in this paper by using a diamond bit employing stones at least as small as 80 per carat of the highest grade possible and by using the diamond bit at the highest speed available with modern drilling equipment. ARMSTRONG (author's reply) —It is generally agreed that the use of smaller, high-grade diamonds and of higher drilling speeds, as suggested by Mr. Ross, may be the best approach to the solution of the problem.

Unmined blocks in the Sewickley seam, surrounded by worked out areas, have been found to transmit overburden oads through the interval strata to the Pittsburgh seam workings 90 ft below. Operating experiences under these conditions are described in this paper. IT has always been understood, in northern West Virginia where both the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams are mined, that pillaring or splitting in the lower Pittsburgh seam could break the interval strata and make mining in the overlying Sewickley difficult or impossible. In some instances, however, mining methods practiced in the overlying Sewickley have reversed the problem, resulting in a shifting of the intermediate layer and destroying valuable acreages of the Pittsburgh seam below. The Pittsburgh seam in this area is, on the average, 102 in. thick. About 18 in. of low-quality head coal are left for roof protection as it is mined. Immediately over the coal are two draw slates, two rider seams, and a good hard black shale, locally called black rock, which serves as a permanent roof where draw slates and riders are taken down on certain main haulroads. In most areas mined in this seam in the past the bottom has been satisfactory but soft. However, in areas now being mined by the Christopher Coal Co. in Monongalia County the bottom is very hard and unyielding. The Sewickley seam, lying 85 ft above the Pittsburgh, will average nearly 70 in. in thickness and is overlain by massive shales and sandstones. Much of the seam is mined only down to the "sheep skin," a hard band about 4 in. above the bottom, which is composed of relatively hard shale. Fig. 1 shows a typical cross-section through the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams in the area being discussed. The thin Redstone seam is not deep-mined but is stripped in some locations where it outcrops. Most of the Sewickley seam in the Morgantown areas has been mined out from 10 to 30 years. There are at present only two large mines and five or six others of small production operating in that seam. Mining systems in the past were generally of the room and pillar type with some full pillar extraction. This seam in the Scott's Run area was operated by as many as thirty or forty different companies at one time, during an era beset with strikes, market failures, and depressions. Most of the barrier pillars along the many main haulroads were abandoned, and blocks of Sewickley coal that would be fully recovered with today's machinery were left unmined when conditions became anything less than favorable. Consequently the mined-out Sewickley is spotted throughout with solid blocks varying in size from 100x100 ft to 200x400 ft and larger. It is these unmined Sewickley blocks surrounded by worked-out portions that have caused transmissions of roof stresses to underlying Pittsburgh mining areas, see Fig. 2, resulting in untold difficulty. As the Christopher Coal Co. operates both the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams, accurate maps of workings in both seams are readily available and are regularly consulted. The first Pittsburgh squeeze attributed to overlying Sewickley blocks occurred in the Arkwright mine, where a shuttle car crew was developing a section consisting of seven panel headings. Access roads for haulage, construction or maintenance purposes are discussed with particular attention being given to the un- sealed "all weather" form of construction for Off-Highway applications. The service conditions experienced by the surfaces used in these roads is examined. These conditions are discussed in terms of the conventional engineering properties used for natural gravel material selection. Experience gained during the construction of a pipeline access track is used to illustratE material selection guidelines based on geological input and an understanding of good construction practices. Although the unsealed gravel road is the back-bone of the rural road network in Australia, in general, traffic loadings are relatively low compared to the off-highway unsealed haulage road. The cost of the haulage/access road construction component is one important factor in project planning which needs careful consideration. Development work to optimize a flotation flowsheet for rare earth element (REE) recovery is underway. The original approach used alkyl phosphates and phosphoric acid ester as collectors to concentrate REE minerals. To improve REE recovery, hydroxamates as alternative collectors were investigated. In this paper, micro flotation of REE minerals using salicylic, benzoyl and naphthoyl hydroxamates is reported. Unlike phosphonic collectors, slime removal does not show a significant effect on REE recovery when using hydroxamates as collectors. Among the three hydoxamates, the grade of La, Ce, and Nd for concentrates produced by salicylic hydroxamate is the highest. The recovery response with naphthoyl hydroxamate is similar to that of salicylic hydroxamate; good grades for La, Ce, and Nd, less effective for Nb, Y, and Zr. The data indicated an affinity by salicylic and naphthoyl hydroxamtes for LREE over the HREE minerals. In comparison, benzoyl hydroxamate indicated an affinity for Nb, Y, and Zr. Temperature effects on REE recovery were also studied. The grade and recovery of REEs generated by flotation using a mix of salicylic and benzoyl hydroxamates at room temperature was almost identical or even better relative to the recovery using naphthoyl hydroxamates at elevated temperature.

MICHAEL J. CRUICKSHANK SENIOR AUTHOR Marine mining is a very broad field. It encompasses every facet of terrestrial mining but with the unique addition of a superimposed liquid overburden, which is itself mineralized. It is the unique aspects of marine mining that are discussed in this section. In keeping with the times, a systems approach is taken in the presentation of the material. The environment is first described, and this is followed in logical sequence by the common requirements for working there, then the mineral exploration phase, the exploitation and, finally, the operational restraints imposed by man and nature. Free use is made of tables and figures from original and published works and extensive listings of reference material round out each section. The title "Marine Mining" was chosen in preference to ocean or underwater mining because it is broad enough to include oceans, beaches and inland seas. The selection of terms sometimes may seem odd but they have not been chosen arbitrarily. All things are reduced, where possible, to basics and defined. Applying systems terminology, the word "platforms" is used in the functional sense and includes not only airborne, waterborne and fixed platforms, but man himself in his capacity as a working diver. If there is confusion it is often because of familiarity with a word in a context personal to the reader. For example, what does extraction mean to you-or mining or exploitation? Cost data have been interspersed throughout the section whenever they could be obtained. The use of these data should be tempered with understanding because no two situations are alike and improvements in marine technology are constantly being made. The names of individual authors are listed with each subsection. Where no name is given, the responsibility has been that of the senior author. Acknowledgment is sincerely made to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and latterly the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for encouraging and supporting the preparation of the work ; to the secretarial staff at the Marine Minerals Technology Center and to Donald Eisman for editing. To the many other contributors who may not be listed by name, grateful acknowledgment is also due. It is hoped that the chapter will be useful to the practicing mining engineer who suddenly is assigned to marine work or to the experienced marine engineer who is equally suddenly assigned to mining work. It is not possible to put "everything-you -need-to¬-know" into one section, but. the very full bibliographies at the end of the text should adequately fill in for those who wish to know more. 20.1-THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT Marine mining is set apart as a separate discipline by the marine environment. The following subsections describe the environment from the point of view of the physicist, the chemist and the geologist. The interrelationship of these disciplines with the economic mineral potential of the oceans and seas is apparent from the description of the marine mineral resources. The marine environment is an extremely complex natural phenomenon with which the marine mining engineer must learn to live. It can be the source of his wealth or his frustrations and sometimes both. It can never be ignored.

The paper reviews the restrictions imposed by the Department of Mines (now the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs) on the surface use of ground that has been undermined at shallow depths (down to a depth of244m). The reasons for the restrictions are discussed, with special reference to the early records kept by the Department of Mines on subsidence and fracture of the surface. A discussion of the nature of the strata overlying the ore-body, and the effect of undermining, is followed by a detailed account of investigational work, particularly since 1970, on the stability of shallowly undermined ground. The significance of the data collected during the investigations is considered next, with special reference to the social and economic implications. These are so farreaching, that it is proposed that the already flexible approach of the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs in considering what structures may be built on undermined ground should become even more flexible. To this end, the appointment of a Commission is proposed to collect as much information as possible on the stability of ground undermined at shallow depth, and to revise the current overrestrictive conditions or guide lines that are in use.

Prior to 1909 that mountain of porphyry known as Sacramento Hill had hardly been touched though it had always been thought to contain ore. During that year, exploratory work was started by underground methods; drifting and raising continued until 1913. It was proved that a mineralized zone existed, the limits of which had not been determined ; so, because of the lower costs of exploratory work and the greater desirability of vertical sections, it was decided to prove the extent of the ore zone by churn drills. Drilling continued until 1917, when it seemed almost certain that the horizontal limits of the orebodies had been determined. Ore continued in depth in one direction beyond a point where it was economical to explore by churn drilling; this extension is still being developed by underground methods. The irregularities of the boundaries of the ore zones, together with the variable grades of ore encountered, made it necessary to drill on the corners of 100-ft. squares. Two ore zones were proved, known as the East and West Orebodies. The Sacramento Hill porphyry stock intruded into the Dividend fault. The fault ran roughly east and west with a dip to the south, having pre-Cambrian schists on the north against Paleozoic limestone on the south. This intrusion was accompanied by a silica breccia on the south periphery, along the limestone contact side. The ore lay in the silica breccia and in the porphyry, some distance from the breccia. NO ore was found in the heart of the porphyry mass on the north side, along the schist contact. The West Orebody is elliptic in shape, having a major axis of 1200 ft. (366 m.) and a minor axis of 800 ft. (244 m.); these diminish with depth until, at 300 ft., the axes are 500 ft. and 300 ft., respectively. The ore consists of chalcocite, some bornite, chalcopyrite, and considerable pyrite in a siliceous gangue. About 30 per cent. of the copper is caused by

The Transactions already contain many valuable papers on the subject of ore-concentration, but with reference more to the treatment of other ores than those of iron. In this country much money, labor and thought have been devoted to the enrichment of iron-ores by roasting to drive off sulphur and carbonic acid, eliminate water, or make the ore more friable, and by washing and screening to remove the clay and sand from earthy ores. In concentrating magnetites and hematites more has been done than is generally believed; but, unfortunately, the results up to the present time have not been encouraging. On the contrary, so many attempts have proved unsatisfactory that any system of concentration is now unjustly looked upon with doubt, and the problem presented to individual mines must therefore be approached with caution. For many years the magnetites of the Adirondack region of New York State have been roasted, reduced to proper size by means of gang-stamps, and jigged on screens in water. Latterly plunger-jigs and rotary-jigs have been introduced, and in some places crushers and rolls have taken the place of stamps. In one instance in that region a plant for reducing the ore by crushers and rolls and separating it by magnetism was put up to treat a titaniferous ore; but, the titanium occurring as ilmenite, the result was unsatisfactory, and the plant is now being reconstructed at another mine, where apatite and silica are to be separated from the magnetite. A large concentrating works was erected at Negaunee, Michigan, in the Marquette region, Lake Superior, to enrich the leaner specular ores. This consisted of crushers, Cornish rolls and rotary-jigs. The results ohtained weye not satisfactory, and it has been abandoned. The New York Meeting this year will-be held from Monday, February 19 to Thursday, February 22. The Committee on Arrangements, the personnel of which is given elsewhere in this Bulletin, is making plans to duplicate the conspicuous success of last year's meeting in New York. The papers to be read at this meeting, it is believed, furnish material for interesting and profitable technical sessions and symposiums. The social features are being carefully planned since it is believed that these form an important part of such meetings; several functions are to be, given with the object of fostering the get-together, know-each-other-better spirit. Ladies are invited to attend this meeting and participate in the various affairs planned by the Ladies' Committee and by the Committee on Arrangements. This preliminary notice is given in order that members may make their plans now to be in Now York at the time of the meeting. Full details will be sent to the membership through the mails as soon as the program has been definitely fixed.

In Rudarski Institut Ljubljana (RIL), i.e. Ljubljana Mining Institute, we have developed CADRIL, a smaller CAD package which purpose is to overcome the difficulties by introducing Computer Aided Design in our mines. Program CADRIL is a graphics shell for several computer applications in mining. With the basic version of CADRIL all 2D working maps for daily use can be produced. Inserting different program blocks into CADRIL we get versions MAPRIL, TAHRIL, SECRIL and so on. The main purpose of all versions is graphics design. The main and most innovative feature of CADRIL is the screen four-word command menu. Not having pull-down or tablet menus is the speciality of this program. CADRIL contains 500 achievable commands. Each of them can be composed by choosing two to four expressions stored and shown in a specific four- column menu, sorted as objects functions, parameters and modes. Thus all commands are immediately accessible. As a result of its plainness and adaptability to the present working methods of mining engineers, CADRIL quickly attained a good reputation in our mines.

Ultrasonic-atlenuation changes due to the formation of free dislocations have been observed during tensile tests of magnesium and LiF single crystals and samples of polycrystalline Results on the LiF and samples are similar: A preyield attenzration increase is observed which, however, be-corlzes smaller as the magnitude of the drop in load al yielding increases. This indicates that the yield point observed in these materials is due to dislovation rather than dislocation unpinning and that the initial density ' free dislocations must be low if the yield point is to be sharp,. Tests on the magnesium ere conducted at both 27" and 200C. Magnesium has the unusual property that the yield drop is larger at the higher test temperature and is accomplished by a decrease in attenuation. The latter is due principally to the temprovary pinning of detained dislocations by highly solute atoms. After strain aging., a stress as low as 0.3 bur suffices to unpin dislocations; microstrain measuements of sufficient sensitivity should. reveal plastic flow at stress levels this low IN another paper,' we describe the technique of simultaneously observing ultrasonic-attenuation changes and plastic microstrain during deformation of spher-oidized carbon steels. Changes of ultrasonic attenuation indicate damping effects caused by the oscillation of long, freely moving dislocation segments. Simultaneous microstrain measurements are used to indicate total dislocation motion. The dislocation-damping observations are most useful in the study of the early stages of deformation where the dislocation density is low and the plastic strain is small and relatively difficult to measure. Particularly interesting results are found in materials which display sharp yield points. Observations of these phenomena are reported here for three materials: single-crystal LiF and magnesium, and poly crystalline molybdenum. EXPERIMENTS Dislocation-damping effects were observed by measuring changes in acoustic attenuation with the ultrasonic-pulse method. The end faces of each of the specimens were ground flat and parallel and a quartz 10 Mc per sec, x-cut transducer was attached to one face. The bonding agents used were: a) "Nonaq" stopcock grease with magnesium, b) beeswax with LiF, and c) salol with molybdenum. With the LiF, the best acoustic signals were obtained at 45 and 50 Mc per sec; all other measurements reported are at 10 MC per sec. The self-potential or spontaneous polarization method is one of the oldest in the field of electrical exploration. When applied in prospecting for ore bodies, it is one of the most rapid and inexpensive means of locating indications of ore bodies at shallow depth. Usually, the procedure is to survey the equipotential lines of the electrical field that is generated by the electrochemical activity of the ore near the ground-water level, and to localize the so-called negative centers or points of greatest negative anomaly. Another field procedure involves the measurement of potential differences along potential profiles, generally laid out at right angles to the assumed strike. Again, in such survey, the basis for establishing the presence of ore is the location of negative potential anomalies. The earlier writers on the subject, notably Schlumbergerl and R. C. Wells,2 did much to clarify the fundamental electrochemical phenomena involved. Interpretation of the field data, however, remained largely qualitative. In 1925, A. Petrovsky3 analyzed the relation between the shape of the potential anomaly curve and size and depth of an Ore body by assuming the subsurface body to be a polarized sphere.' Along similar lines of approach, Edge and Laby5 considered the ore body a dipping sheet with limited extent in the direction of strike, while Poldini6 based the theory on the assumption of a dipping bar. The following study endeavors to enlarge upon these earlier investigations and attempts, on the basis of the potential distribution of a polarized bar, to indicate certain characteristics of the anomaly curve that make possible the determination of depth, size and dip of a subsurface body. The Spontaneous Polarization Field Set Up by an Ore Body If a sulphide ore body is subjected to oxidation varying in degree in its upper and lower parts according to the difference in the concentration of oxygen within the surrounding medium, an electrical potential field is set up. The form and distribution of this field will be investigated herein with special reference to its components on the earth,s surface. Under the simplifying assumption that the ore body may be considered as a dipole with the point sources Q1 and Q2 situated at its upper and lower ends (Fig. I), the potential of the spontaneous polarization at point P is given by the following equation:

The self-potential or spontaneous polarization method is one of the oldest in the field of electrical exploration. When applied in prospecting for ore bodies, it is one of the most rapid and inexpensive means of locating indications of ore bodies at shallow depth. Usually, the procedure is to survey the equipotential lines of the electrical field that is generated by the electrochemical activity of the ore near the ground-water level, and to localize the so-called negative centers or points of greatest negative anomaly. Another field procedure involves the measurement of potential differences along potential profiles, generally laid out at right angles to the assumed strike. Again, in such survey, the basis for establishing the presence of ore is the location of negative potential anomalies. The earlier writers on the subject, notably Schlumbergerl and R. C. Wells,2 did much to clarify the fundamental electrochemical phenomena involved. Interpretation of the field data, however, remained largely qualitative. In 1925, A. Petrovsky3 analyzed the relation between the shape of the potential anomaly curve and size and depth of an Ore body by assuming the subsurface body to be a polarized sphere.' Along similar lines of approach, Edge and Laby5 considered the ore body a dipping sheet with limited extent in the direction of strike, while Poldini6 based the theory on the assumption of a dipping bar. The following study endeavors to enlarge upon these earlier investigations and attempts, on the basis of the potential distribution of a polarized bar, to indicate certain characteristics of the anomaly curve that make possible the determination of depth, size and dip of a subsurface body. The Spontaneous Polarization Field Set Up by an Ore Body If a sulphide ore body is subjected to oxidation varying in degree in its upper and lower parts according to the difference in the concentration of oxygen within the surrounding medium, an electrical potential field is set up. The form and distribution of this field will be investigated herein with special reference to its components on the earth,s surface. Under the simplifying assumption that the ore body may be considered as a dipole with the point sources Q1 and Q2 situated at its upper and lower ends (Fig. I), the potential of the spontaneous polarization at point P is given by the following equation:

(communication to the Secretary): I have read with much pleasure the interesting and valuable paper by Mr. Kunz, and hope that the following brief notes, gathered a few years ago, while a resident in Mexico City, may help to elucidate the subjcct: Turquoise.—This was known to the Aztecs as Xihuitl. Santiago Ramirez states that they found it in the Cerro Xicohtzonc, close to Atzcapatzalco, a suburb of the City of Mexico (compare page 59). Opal.—This was known to the ancient Mexicans, for they named it mezcuitlatt (compare page 63). Jade.—Under this was iucluded a third mineral, prehnite, not mentioned by Mr. Kunz. According to James D. Dana, part of the "jade " of China is prehnite; and Humboldt informs us, in his work on New Spain, that the same species of jade is known in some parts of Mexico as mahagua (majagua ?). The same writer says, in his Views of the Cordilleras, that the Aztec name Tecpatl included flint, hornstone, and green jade; and finally, in his Travels in South America," he discusses the nature of the ancient amazon-stones, and declares them to have been made out of a jade resembling " compact feldspar," one of the constituents of the gabbro verde di Corsica. IIence those stones were probably composed of nephrite. According to Humboldt, the form given to them most frequently is that of the Babylomian cylinder, longitudinally perforated, and loaded with inscriptions and figures. They were also cut by the natives into very thin plates, perforated at the center, suspended by a thread, and worn as amulets. According to the historian Clavijero, the specific name given by the Aztecs to the nephritic stone (jadeite) was Quitzalitztli,

Mineral aggregates experience degradation during field and laboratory compaction. Reduction in the aggregate size is accomplished by abrasion of the particle edges and fracturing of individual pieces which have become overstressed. Little is known of the factors that govern the amount of breakdown experienced for a given situation. A field study was made of the factors affecting aggregate breakdown under compaction using three carbonate aggregates of different physical properties. The preliminary results indicate that rock type, compactive effort, gradation, and thickness of compactive layer are factors which exert the greatest influence. Mineral aggregates experience a mechanical breakdown of some of the aggregate pieces into smaller fragments during any compaction process, whether in the field or laboratory. This phenomenon occurs as abrasion of the sharp edges during movement and reorientation of the particles in densifying and/or as granulation and fracturing of those pieces which have become overstressed. This type is almost entirely a mechanical action. The other occurs after the construction period when the roadway has been put into use. This in-service breakdown is; a different phenomenon from the breakdown during construction in the sense that it combines mechanical with chemical changes. Time becomes an important consideration that may cause subordinate factors in construction degradation to develop into principal ones for in-service breakdown. Five-element style deposits are unusual hydrothermal systems that are typically characterized by a nickel-cobalt-arsenic- silver-bismuth metal assemblage. This mineralization is often represented by abundant native silver, arsenic, or bismuth, and followed by nickel, cobalt, and iron arsenides (skutterudite, safflorite, nickeline, rammelsbergite, and lollingite). The Black Hawk district in Grant County, New Mexico is one of the few examples of this mineralization style in the United States. Despite the differences in formation temperature, depth of emplacement, and host rocks between five-element style deposits worldwide, there are commonalities in mineralogy, ore texture, and composition. A detailed exploration of the native metal and arsenide phases will be performed to compare ore forming fluids between systems and the effects on styles of mineralization and paragenesis, as well as to aid in broader classification of the deposit style. Mineralogy and mineral relationships of the Black Hawk District and other five-element deposits worldwide will be characterized by reflected light petrography, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe analysis. Mineralogical phase diagrams will be generated to better understand the driving processes and evolution of the systems through native metal and arsenide precipitation.
