A large production of vanadium during the war helped Germany to meet her critical requirements for the ferroalloy metals. Vanadium was needed not only in the ordinary high-speed too1 steels, but in other as a substitute for chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, which were scarce. Lacking a source of vanadium ore, however, the vanadium was obtained as a by-product of the steel industry—va-nadium-bearing pig iron smelted from iron ores containing about o. I per cellt V was blown in converters to yield vanadium-rich slag, from which vanadium was recovered by chemical treatment. The production capacity obtained was said to be about 6,500,000 lb. of vanadium a Year. Although the general Processes of Preparing vanadium-rich slags as well as the recovery methods described herein are known, some of the details presented may be of interest to both the American steel industry and the vanadium producers. No adequate data on the cost of the vanadium produced in Germany are known, but it seems likely that the cost exceeds the commonly quoted domestic price of about $1.10 per pound of contained VzOa. Information on the German vanadium production was obtained by a team of geologists from the Geological Survey* United States Department of the Interior, during investigations in May and June 1945 of the German utilization of low-grade raw materials. These investigations were sponsored by the Chief of Engineers, War Department. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the aid obtained from Messrs. H. C. Smith and J. D. The data on vanadium recovery from iron ores were obtained from the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut fiir Eisenforschung, the Hermann Goring steel plant at Watenstedt, and from notes made by other investigators at other German steel plants. Preparation of Vanadium-rich Slags Most German iron ores contain only about 0.1 per cent vanadium, or even less, but some of the scandinavian iron ores available to the German iron industry in the past contain a little more than 0.1 per cent. THE principal purposes of library-catalogs are to enable a reader to find a book of which the author, the title, or the subject is known; to show what the library has. by a given author, or on a given subject; and to assist in the choice of a book, as to its edition, or as to its character. The author, in a narrow sense, is the person who writes a book; in a wider sense it is applied to him who is the cause of the book's existence, e.g., editor, translator, compiler, etc. Bodies of men, societies, and countries are, from a cataloging point of view, con¬sidered the authors of their official publications, memoirs, transactions, etc. All names selected as author names are arranged in strict alphabetical order. A subject catalog fulfills its purpose by entering or registering each book under the name of that subject or topic of which the book chiefly treats. It may or may not be alphabetical in arrangement. If the arrangement is not alphabetical, the catalog is commonly called a classed subject catalog, although this name might with equal propriety be applied to some alphabetical arrangements.

Network analysis of mine ventilation systems is not new, having been traced back to 1854. A Committee Report (1970) has also reported the extensive work done in this respect in the United Kingdom, Japan, U.S.S.R., South Africa, United States, and other countries. Wang, et al (1970) developed a computer program which is an improvement over the earlier one developed by Wang et al (1967). The program has been recently modified and extended to include methane emission features by Owili-Eger (1973). This computer program incorporates all the novel features of the earlier programs. These include the capabilities of mesh selection, free splitting, internal or external fans, natural ventilation pressure and fixed quantity branches. The program is written in Fortran IV and, in effect, is an experimental mine in which many ideas can be tried out. The computer produces, besides the input data and certain computational data, the quantities and head losses in the branches, the head losses to be adjusted in the fixed quantity branches and the fan operating point. The last named program, hereafter to be referred to as the PSU/MVS, is presented in Appendix I. The application of this program is demonstrated in this manual through a series of selected examples. Application of the methane generator program is not included here as a detailed report on the subject is available elsewhere (Ramani et al, 1975).

Research has received inadequate support except in industries born in the laboratory, the chemical and electrical industries, from which many lessons might well be drawn by their elder associates. The rapid growth of these industries has been largely due to close cooperation of scientists and engineers. Most rapid advance is made when the research worker and the engineer keep in close touch with each other's ideas and problems. Many of the developments of modern industry are based on dis-coveries buried for years in scientific journals because the "time was not ripe" at their discovery. The situation with regard to utilization of coal is quite the opposite. The fundamental facts in regard to the scientific aspects of the problem of developing the energy from coal are scarcely known. The engineer, without much scientific cooperation, has accom-plished much in increasing the number of kilowatt-hours per pound of coal from 0.31 in 1919 to 0.69 in 1934, in increasing the 1000 gross ton-miles of freight hauled from 6.1 to 8.3 per ton of coal in the same period, in fuel economy in production of coke, and in developing the production of motor fuel in Germany and England by hydrogenation of coal. This lack of scientific research on the utilization of our most important natural resource, coal, has been due undoubtedly in large part to the reluctance of investigators to study the interrelationships involved in, the complicated processes in which coal is used. "The adsorption of ethyl xanthate on copper sulfides, i.e., chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite, has been studied in situ in aqueous solutions by applying an atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM images show that xanthate, such as potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX), adsorbs strongly on chalcocite and bornite mainly in the form of insoluble metal xanthate, which binds strongly with the mineral surface without being removed by flushing with ethanol alcohol. This adsorption mechanism is totally different from the one obtained with chalcopyrite/xanthate system, during which oily dixanthogen is the main adsorption product on chalcopyrite surface. The findings obtained from the present AFM study suggest that an AFM image analysis is a powerful tool for the study of the collector’s adsorption on mineral surface and as well the development of novel collector for copper sulfide flotation.INTRODUCTIONIn mining industry, copper sulfide minerals, i.e., chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite, are usually separated selectively from non-valuable gangue by froth flotation, which treats the highest throughput and produces the maximum economic outcome of any surface chemistry process. In flotation, collectors are added into the pulp (mixture of water and fine-grained minerals) to selectively adsorb onto the target mineral and render its surface with high hydrophobicity, which is generally beneficial for a strong mineralbubble attachment and thus a high flotation recovery.The adsorption of collector on mineral surface, therefore, is vital for a successful flotation process and it has been studied by applying various surface analysis techniques, such as IR (Infrared Spectroscopy), CV (Cyclic Voltammetry) and XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy). (Poling, 1963; Allison et al., 1972; Mielczarski et al., 1984; Leppinen et al., 1989; Kartio et al., 1996) These studies have revealed a lot of information, such as the reaction, product and mechanism, of the adsorption of chemicals on mineral surface. It is also of great interest to directly get the image of adsorbed collectors on mineral surface changing with pulp chemistry, such as pH, redox potential, ionic strength and chemical’s dosage."

Kovohute Pribram is a plant recycling lead wastes, lead acid batteries in particular. Relevant new recycling technologies are being gradually developed. Outdated technology of smelting lead plates has been replaced by a new technology based on processing of entire batteries in a blast furnace according to the process developed by know-how of German Varta company. The classical Harris refining has been substituted by the oxygen refining. New technologies aimed at utilization of related wastes arising from refining lead bullion in Kovohute Pribram are being developed in house. At present, a new technology of utilization of spent battery acid for extracting zinc from various wastes has been developed. Zinc oxide dross from alkaline refining of lead bullion, during which residual zinc from the preceding vacuum de-zincing is removed as well as waste zinc galvanic sludges (a product of neutralizing precipitation of metals from industrial wastewaters with lime) were treated. In this study, the new developed technology yielding basic zinc carbonate - a valuable raw material for zinc electrowinning, is described together with the first experience of applying the developed method to processing zinc wastes on a pilot scale. Most of the equipment used in the past to regenerate alkali solutions originating from Harris refinery was utilized in the practical realization of this new technology.

MIXED emotions were produced by the announcement that the buildup of weapons will be stretched out till mid-1954 instead of the previous 1953 deadline. Reason: government assistance programs will be tougher to get but there will be easement in materials allocations. Earlier in February, DPA had announced that tightening up on regulations governing rapid tax -amortization would become effective March 1. In the future, DPA will have to certify amortization contracts for all construction and permanent installations costing more than $100,000. This action was necessary according to DPA's James F. King, so that new industrial expansions already approved could be assessed in the light of the changing critical mineral picture. When DMPA inherited the backlog of government assistance, requests from DMA, it moved in fast. The results of DMPA's work is described in the article on p. 351 by James K. Richardson; The speed with which these requests were approved and the lengthening of the military program have made a reappraisal of the critical mineral list necessary. It looks as though the consumer industries will be getting more metal soon and, led by steel, there is an industry push toward the abandonment of CMP. Relaxing of materials controls appears imminent but discontinuing CMP is in the "let's talk this thing over" stage.

For a number of years I have, at odd times, tried to perfect a method of assay sufficiently delicate to find and estimate minute quantities of gold and silver. The object in view was to examine rocks remote from veins or mineral areas, in order to test the probability of the lateral-secretion theory. Having succeeded in measuring approximately the amount of gold and silver contained in one cubic centimeter of sea-water, I present a detailed account of the method employed, with some of the results obtained. General Method of Assay. The use of purified lead without other flux, blowpipe methods, extraction by cyanide, and measurement of the beads by the microscope. Purged Lead. The method of testing is by cupellation. On a properly prepared cupel, it is easy to cupel and find a bead of 0.002 mm. diameter. Such a bead of silver weighs about 1 part of a milligramme. A bead 0.02 mm. in diameter weighs about 1/24,000 mg., and a close approximation can be made to its weight. It is desirable that the lead used in the assay should be low in silver so as to avoid large correction, but as the parted

A. 4 Illustrative Simulations The capabilities of the program are demonstrated by simulating various evacuation cases in different situations for a particular mine. The mine selected for the illustrative simulations is the mine I C' , as described in Section 2, chosen particularly because of availability of mine characteristic data and mine evacuation results for test drills. These evacuation results can be used to verify validity of the predictions made by the program A.4 1 Mine Characteristics A schematic diagram of the mine is shown in Figure 19. The figure shows all the major shafts, drifts, raises and stopes of the mine in the form of a network. There are four hoists, Hoist No. 1 and Hoist No. 2 are assumed to be single drum hoists and Hoists Nos. 3 and 4 form part of a double drum hoist, with Hoist No. 4 being the main hoist (master hoist) The positions of the 133 miners, typically working in a day shift of the mine, are also shown in the figure. The miners are identified by a miner number, and their total number on each level is chosen from the data on the fire drill simulated as Case No. 1 in the illustrative simulations.

IN 1925 the writer undertook a detailed statistical study of all producing areas in the Joplin district as a basis for evaluating programs and measuring objectives. For this purpose, the published figures in the yearly volumes of Mineral Resources were used, supplemented for earlier years by publications of the Missouri Geological Survey and other local and less official sources. When all else failed, the available data were projected backward to hazard a reasonable guess as to the unrecorded early output of important areas. Fortunately, the proportion of such prehistory production is not a large factor in any of the totals. These results were used during the next few years to measure the relative importance of various producing areas and to predict the peak period of development of the all-important Picher field. For the purpose of this review, the charts have been completed to the end of 1950. During World War 11, the U. S. Bureau of Mines became interested in a similar study and issued comprehensive statistical tabulations of data up to 1945 ( Info. Circular 7383), which have been checked against the figures used herein. This tabulation, however, does not include all the earlier data used by the writer nor does it offer any estimates of the wholly unrecorded era in the beginnings of the earlier camps. The area covered in this study is shown in Fig. 1 on which are indicated the relative location and approximate outlines of the principal producing camps. This also shows the approximate yield to date of each major camp in terms of combined lead and zinc concentrates. The output of zinc concentrates is roughly seven times that of lead. Hence, the economy of the district has depended primarily on the price of zinc, with lead as an important byproduct. Over much of the productive period, lead concentrates averaged about twice the value of zinc concentrates per ton, and in certain mines or areas the proportion of lead to zinc was substantially above average. The Joplin district is largely flat prairie but is partly moderately dissected, partially wooded land with a relief generally less than 100 ft. The rocks are almost flat-lying, nearly parallel to the surface, and the chief ore formation is the Mississippian Boone limestone, including its cherty phases. This formation either outcrops in the producing areas or is covered by a thin veneer of Pennsylvanian shales. Virtually all the ore occurs within 400 ft of the surface, and a large part at less than 300 ft in depth. Most of the land was divided into small farms or town lots before mineral development; tracts seldom exceeded 160 acres, and averaged considerably less. Mineral rights followed the surface ownership, segregation was rare, and a system of leasing for mineral development became well established early in the region's history, many landowners deriving small to sizable fortunes from royalties. Because of the shal-lowness of the ore and other factors, prospecting and mining was cheaper than in almost any comparable mining district in the United States. This situation, coupled with the widely divided land ownership, offered a fertile field for promoters and speculators and led to the rise of many small mining concerns. Only in its later history, under stern economic compulsion, has control tended to centralize in a few companies. Under these conditions, any important new discovery or successful development had much the effect of a gold rush or an oil boom. Every property in the area was leased quickly, promptly drilled, and, if ore was found, it was soon on the market. Many companies and individuals participated, and the average producing lease-hold probably was about 40 acres in extent. Any important field thus was attacked by anywhere from 10 to 100 or more producers. Production zoomed, eventually steadied or wavered, and ultimately subsided, leaving a desolation of tailings mountains, cave-ins, empty housing, and wreckage. The object of this paper is to depict the pattern of this process, so far as metal production is concerned, and to note the way in which it reacted to economic and political pressures. Production Charts In Fig. 2 is charted the production record, in tons of lead and zinc concentrates combined, of eight of the principal camps, which together account for approximately 99 pct of the total district production, over the years from 1870 to 1950. This period covers all but the very minor beginning of mining history. Two important camps are divided by state lines; hence, it has been necessary to combine production records for the two portions, based on estimates that may be slightly in error. Certain camps are sub-dividable into important units for which separate figures are available in whole or in part and have been charted as fractions of the major unit. The corresponding price of zinc is shown above all the charts. Three camps, Aurora, Neck City, and Galena, show a remarkably symmetrical graphic pattern, which is interpreted as the norm. The curves rise steeply to a peak, level off for an irregular interval, and then drop sharply to zero on a slope corresponding roughly to that covered by the initial rise. The three portions of these charts seem appropriately characterized by the designations of youth, maturity, and decline. On the whole, with some irregularities, the production in each of the three periods seems to be almost equal. A fourth camp, Granby, fails to conform to the normal pattern. It exhibits a very long period of reasonably uniform, stabilized production corresponding to maturity, followed by a rather precipitate decline. Its youth is hidden in the era of prehistory. This habit of steady, long-continued production at an even keel is attributable to the fact that this camp, more than any other, was controlled largely by a single principal owner at any given period over most of its history and this permitted the imposition

The Muddy and Dakota sands, more commonly known as the "D" and "J" sands, respectively, of the Denver-Julesburg Basin are correlative over a large area. It is reasonable to believe, therefore, that depositional environment throughout the Basin was comparable. Local variations in sand development do occur, however, and productivity is often governed by permeability as well as structural position. Experience indicates permeability is commonly a function of cementing material. While cases of siliceous or calcareous cementing have been observed, the bonding material is, for the most part, clay. Under the latter circumstance, clay should bear some relation to permeability. Similarly, gamma radiation should bear some relation to the amount of clay. This study was undertaken to determine if a cross relation exists between gamma radiation and permeability. RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION A qualitative relation does exist between gamma radiation and permeability for clay-bonded Muddy and Dakota sands of the Denver-Julesburg Basin. This is illustrated graphically by Fig. 1, which shows corrected gamma ray deflection vs permeability for five wells over an area approximately 50 miles long and 8 miles wide. The "corrected" gamma ray deflection cannot be read directly from the gamma ray survey in all cases. It became apparent early in the investigation that methods would have to be developed for converting all gamma ray surveys to a common deflection scale and to correct for thin bed effects. COMMON SCALE DEFLECTION Because all logs are not recorded in the same calibration units or at the same sensitivity, it was felt they could be most readily converted to a common scale by measurement of deflection in inches from zero. Initially, four wells in the Jacinto field of Nebraska were carefully correlated, and selected intervals were planimetered to obtain average deflections. Average deflections of planimetered intervals from three of the wells were plotted vs those of the fourth well which was to be used as a common reference. The plots are shown in Fig. 2. While results obtained by this method in the Jacinto field were relatively good, the planimetered intervals were not easily correlated with logs from other fields. 1. THE SCIENCE OF MINERALOGY treats of those inorganic species called minerals, which together in rock masses or in isolated form make up the material of the crust of the earth, and of other bodies in the universe so far as it is possible to study them in the form of meteorites. 2. Definition of a Mineral. - A Mineral is a body produced by the proc¬esses of inorganic nature, having a definite chemical composition and, if formed under favorable conditions, a certain characteristic molecular structure which is exhibited in its crystalline form and other physical properties. This definition calls for some further explanation. First of all, a mineral must be a homogeneous substance, even when minutely examined by the microscope; further, it must have a definite chemical composition, capable of being expressed by a chemical formula. Thus, much basalt appears to be homogeneous to the eye, but when examined under the microscope . in thin sections it is seen to be made up of different substances, each having characters of its own. Again, obsidian, or volcanic glass, though it may be essentially homogeneous, has not a definite composition corresponding to a specific chemical formula, and is hence classed as a rock, not as a mineral species. Further, several substances, as tachylyte, hyalome¬lane, etc., which at one time passed as minerals, have been relegated to petrology, because it has been shown that they are only local forms of basalt, retaining an apparently homogeneous form due to rapid cooling. Again, a mineral has in all cases a definite molecular structure, unless the conditions of formation have been such as to prevent this, which is rarely true. This molecular structure, as will be shown later, manifests itself in the physical characters and especially in the external crystalline form.

1. The purpose of the National Research Council as organized for war purposes is twofold, to stimulate those outside its own personnel to conduct researches of importance for winning the war and to carry on such researches through its personnel to a limited extent. How this is done is explained in Section 10. "Research" is used here in a very broad sense, including, for instance, inventing and developing mechanical and physical devices. The need of this work arises from the inevitable concentration of most of the governmental war agencies on the production and transportation of war materials of the types now adopted, as distinguished from devising new kinds of instrumentalities, such as armor, guns, aircraft, and apparatus for detecting, locating, observing, signaling, transporting, and many other military purposes. But it is important that we should devise new agencies. The war came near being won by an invention, the submarine, and its course has been affected greatly by two other inventions, tanks and aircraft. In spite of our numerical superiority victory may well be snatched from us by an invention, if we allow Germany to outstrip us in inventing. Hence the importance of the Council's work in mobilizing and organizing the services of the patriotic civilian experts throughout the country, so as to bring their powers to bear on important war problems and on inventing war devices, as an adjunct to the development work of the regular governmental bodies. 2. Status of the Council.—Though President Wilson's request caused the Council to be created in 1916 by the National Academy of Sciences under its congressional charter; though his executive order of May 11, 1918, directs the heads of "Governmental departments immediately concerned" to "continue to co-operate with it in every way that may be required;" and though the Government has contributed largely to its financial support; it is not a department of the Government but an independent research body, aiming to evolve the necessary mechanism for the novel work of systematic stimulation and guidance of research. Thus the Government, which instigated the creation of the Council, recognizes and collaborates with it, and in part supports it. The Council acts moreover as the Department of Science and Research of the Council of National Defense.

ONE of the chief concerns of the Bethlehem Steel Co. naturally is the proper functioning of its organization. This involves the training of a continuous supply of younger men to fill the vacancies caused not only by the inevitable departure of older men, but also by the growth of existing establishment, and by expansion in new directions. It does not oper-ate a student training course with a fixed time schedule or with definite periods of rotation through the differ-ent divisions. To state the case positively, the gradu-ate's training course must operate continuously from the beginning of his employment through a long term of years. No period of weeks or months nor pair of years suffice to bring him into contact with all the com-binations needed to qualify him for the larger destiny toward which we hope he is headed. Our first step in selecting a college man is to require that he have a degree. We thus approximate the assur-ance that at least four annual siftings have reduced the chance that a non-worker may find himself in a job where work is necessary. The next step is to try to ascertain facts, from the graduate and from others who have known him at his home and in 'his college, to indi-cate whether our opportunities offer him a career that will challenge his continuing interest, and hold him to tenacious effort against all happenings. We aim to avoid knowingly bringing into our organization a man who will not develop in it enough enthusiasm to keep him happily striving. Having made our selections, we assemble the gradu-ates into a probationary observation circuit. We-put ourselves under their observation by taking them in small groups, usually of two to four men, on a circuit of every part of the Bethlehem plant, in which every manufacturing principle of our steel business is ex-emplified. The probationers work at something from day to day, with their hands if it can be arranged; otherwise in questioning, examining, and note-taking. Their observations include talks with superintendents, foremen, and workmen, the conditions under which workmen labor, apparatus, machinery, methods, design and operation of plant.

The development and testing of a simple mechanical stemming aid (Patents pending) resulting from a Joint venture by Incubator Technologies Inc. and the University of Missouri-Rolla and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy is described. The aid comprises a solid unit placed in the stemming above the explosive column and is designed to improve blasting efficiency and reduce drilling and blasting costs. It works with back filled drill cuttings or any other suitable stemming material.

The large iron-ore producers on the Mesabi Range are able to maintain the silica in their shipping products at from 8 to 10 per cent. by mixing ores of various grades, some assaying 4 per cent, silica and some as high as 18 per cent. silica. For each ton of 4 per cent. silica ore mined, a ton of 14 per cent, silica ore can be mined and mixed with it and the average grade maintained at 9 per cent. This mixing operation has made possible the utilization of large quantities of ore too lean to be used alone, and herein lies the advantage of the producers who operate a number of mines at the same time. As the grade of the ore from one of the properties falls off, a little high-grade ore from another property can be mixed with it and the average maintained, while if one property alone were being operated all of the ore below grade would be left behind. This mixing operation, however, can continue only as long as there is high-grade ore available for mixing with the high-silica ores and, while the tonnage of iron ore in the Mesabi Range is still enormous, the tonnage of high-grade ore suitable for mixing with any quantity of low-grade ore is being rapidly depleted. Obviously, if an 18 per cent. silica ore can be reduced by concentration methods to 12 per cent. silica, considerably more of it can be utilized with a given amount of high-grade ore. The operators on the Mesabi Range recognize this situation and are energeticdly endeavoring to reduce the silica in their concentration plants because every unit of silica that can be removed by concentration is a conservation of their high-grade ores. More Elaborate Processes Will Be Needed At the present time there are thirty-seven concentrating plants on the Mesabi Range, and about one-third of the total ore shipped is beneficiated in these plants. In about one-half of these plants no reduction is made in the silica but the moisture or structure of the ore is improved. The washing process is by far the most important method for the removal of silica, and it is interesting to observe that the tonnage of "wash" ore during the past five years has shown practically no increase although the total tonnage of ore shipped has increased. The stability of pillars is analysed on the assumption that pillars shed load in a stable manner if the slope the strata load-deformation relation is steeper than that of pillars in the post-peak regime. Concepts of local stiffness, mine structural stiffness, and critical stiffness are discussed. Procedures are described for the determination of strata stiffness for various pillar layouts by use of the available boundary-element computer programs. The postpeak stiffness of pillars is assessed from the available data relating to the post-peak load-deformation relationship and width-to-height ratio. Stability analyses are carried out by the contrasting of strata stiffness with post-peak pillar stiffness. It is shown that the strata stiffness becomes unacceptably small for a stable yield-pillar layout when the span exceeds about 5 times the depth. The strata stiffness is found to increase, thereby increasing the stability, as the span-to-depth ratio, number of pillars, and percentage extraction are decreased. It is also found that the stability in a yield pillar becomes difficult to achieve when al the pillars in a layout are in the descending part their post-peak load-deformation curve
