Geological Survey topographic mapping parties started initial operations in the 1953 Alaskan mapping program. One area to be covered is 17,000 sq miles in the Kantishna River, Melozitna, Tanana Fairbanks, Healy and Mt. McKinley section. The other area to be covered is the Kenai, Tyonek, Blying Sound and Seldovia areas. Average starting salary earned in 1952 by Columbia University School of Engineering graduates was $4000 yearly. This year's graduates can expect to start at about $4300, according to a survey taken by Columbia. Figures cover only those with Bachelor degrees. Graduates with a Master's started at an average of $500 per year more.

"The solubility of wollastonite and its Hallimond flotation behavior as a function of dodecylamine concentration and pH are examined. The flotation response is characterized by adsorption and surface energy in the presence of amine. The methods of UV-Visible and FT-IR spectroscopy for adsorption and sessile-drop contact angle for surface energy estimation are employed.The results of wollastonite dissolution clearly showed its non uniform dissolution. The surfaces are depleted with calcium ions and became rich in silicon within 10 min of flotation time. Maximum flotation of wollastonite corresponds to a half monolayer coverage of amine, which is substantiated by the surface energy parameters as shown in figure 1."

The City of Henderson, Nevada is experiencing extraordinary population growth. Some residential development requires blasting to be conducted at close proximities to high-value houses. Blastingrelated concerns voiced by the community residents include dust, noise, fears of damage to residences, and claims of insufficient controls exercised by the blasters. Residents perceive geological conditions are adverse to the protection of structures at the current vibration regulatory limit of 0.5 in/s. Airblast limits are 120 dB. Vibrations felt within structures leave home owners with the perception that damage is taking place. New cracks appearing in homes at distances far from the blasting are being blamed on blasting.

The Pokorny sulfur deposit is located in the northwest comer of the Delaware basin in the Rustler Springs sulfur district of west Texas. To date, 57 sulfur test wells have been drilled by Addwest Minerals delineating a resource of greater than one million long tons (It) of native sulfur. The deposit, hosted by the Permian Ochoan Castile Formation evaporite sequence, is a sulfur-bearing bioepigenetic limestone replacement of banded bituminous anhydrite. Three distinct mineralized horizons are present that correlate with zones of halite dissolution in the Castile. Sulfur mineralization occurs as hydrocarbon-poor disseminated grains, and as crystalline linings of discontinuous planar voids and large vugs.

"The non-ferrous pyrometallurgical industry has been under extreme pressure since 1980 and significant changes are taking place, principally in the copper, nickel and lead industries. This paper reviews some of these changes, particularly with respect to smelter capacity, major technical trends, and the industry's response to increased energy costs and environmental constraints.The Canadian metal mineral production for 1985 has been estimated at a value of over $8 billion, of which half is derived from copper, nickel, lead and zinc production. It is in our national interest that the Canadian industry remain competitive in the world market and continue its traditional contribution to the Canadian economy. IntroductionPyrometallurgy by definition requires energy, usually in the form of fuel, and produces process gas streams which can no longer be discharged directly to atmosphere in most countries. While the industry has been under varying degrees of pressure over the past fifteen years, it is just since the early 1980s that major changes have taken place, due, to a large extent, to an oversupply on the primary metal markets and depressed prices. These factors, combined with a surge in the price of oil, have resulted in some trends developing which must be recognized by those in the industry who plan to be in operation and competitive in the next decade.Although the value of Canada's mineral production, in terms of constant dollars, has decreased by more than 35% over the period from 1980 to 1985, the bulk of this production is exported and the industry still makes a significant contribution to the Canadian economy."

In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre- Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth.The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than 2 micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

With only one certain exception coal was never used by the Indians, before white men came to America, for any purpose except as an ornament or for paint. Within the past few years it has been discovered that the Hopi Indians in Navajo County, Arizona, used lignite for burning pottery, about 1000 A. D., as dated by tree rings. They were able to obtain a clear color in their ware that could not be obtained with brushwood fires. The coal was mined by hammers from outcrop openings, some of which can still be seen, and the tools used have been found in them.1 (See also p. 376.) Small figurines made of splint or cannel coal have been found at various localities in western New York, in Ohio and possibly other places, evidently made for ornaments. There is no reason to think they are of any greater age, if as old, as that mentioned above. Some crushed coal was used by the Indians as a black pigment in painting themselves, but apparently the eastern Indians never used coal for any other purposes. Some think that several tribes of Indians in the Northwest, along the Missouri, used coal as fuel, the basis being a statement attributed to Radisson about 1660. In the Jesuit Relations of 1659-1660 it was stated that Radisson anti Groseilliers had just returned from a visit to Lake Superior and beyond. "In the country of the Poualak, which means 'warriors' they say `as wood is scanty in supply and small in size in their country, nature has taught them to make fire with coal from the earth (charbon de terre) and to cover their cabins with skins.'"2 This statement was only hearsay with the good fathers, and the reputation for veracity of the two explorers is not of the best, and it is extremely probable that instead of coal they used turf, dry grass or buffalo chips. In fact in Radisson's Voyages' he does not mention coal at all in his account of the third voyage, when he was supposed to have seen it used. His accounts of his travels are badly mixed, and he and his companions were much better travellers than narrators. None of the early travellers up the Missouri River saw any evidence even then that the Indians were familiar with the use of coal. In the writer's opinion it is unlikely that coal was used as stated by the Jesuits.

IN the NiAl phase diagram the NiAl (CsC1-type) phase field extends over a large composition range. At elevated temperatures the nickel-rich phase boundary extends to a composition of about 70 at. pct Ni, a value which is within 5 at. pct of the Ni3A1 (Cu 3 Au-type) phase boundary.' At room temperature, however, the maximum nickel content is only about 60 at. pct. Experiments have shown that alloys containing greater than 63 at. pct Ni when quenched from temperatures below 1000°C contain the equilibrium phases NiAl and Ni3A1. On the other hand, when these same alloys are quenched from temperatures above 1000°C and examined microscopically, a typically martensitic decomposition product appears in the microstructure as shown in the micrograph of Fig. 1. The structure of the martensitic phase has been determined by employing powder X-ray diffraction techniques to be an "ordered" AuCu type (Strukturbericht Llo, space group P/4 mmm - DL). The diffraction pattern of this phase differs from that of AuCu in the appearance of superlattice lines. The structure is shown in Fig. 2. The open circles represent nickel atoms and the half-shaded circles represent nickel and aluminum atoms which are randomly distributed. The sites represented by half-shaded circles would be occupied solely by nickel atoms at a stoichiometry of Ni3A1. The alloys used in this investigation were prepared from 99.99 wt pct Al and 99.99 wt pct Ni by arc melting charges of varying compositions in a water-cooled copper hearth using a tungsten electrode in a gettered argon atmosphere. In all cases chemical analysis agreed within $ at. pct with the nominal compositions of the alloys. Annealing treatments were carried out in a vertical resistance furnace through which a stream of argon gas was flowing. Specimens, which were wrapped in tantalum foil, were quenched by allowing the specimens to drop into a bucket containing iced brine. PAULY, Schenectady, N. Y.-I have seen this installation and I wish all those interested in the question of electricity as a mine pumping agent could see it. It is not only a model for mine installation, but might well serve as a model for any electrically driven pumping plant. I think I am correct in saying that the pumps are the largest electrically operated centrifugal pumps in mine service in America. I talked with Mr. Rumsey in Duluth just before coming here, and he told me that the actual tests of the equipment as installed checked very closely with the shop tests; that the water delivered by the pumps was slightly in excess of the guarantee, something like 3 or 4 per cent., and that no troubles except of a very minor nature had been experienced with the installation from the start. One point which has been brought out by Mr. Rumsey, and by others who have looked into this question, is the marked saving which' can be made by the application of electricity to pumps, especially to the main sump pumps. The pumps are always located a long distance from the boiler plant and the losses in the steam mains are large. While many of the steam pumps are of a very high grade, yet the tests seemed to indicate that the steam consumption is extremely large. The reduction in operating cost of one small installation which I. have in mind pumping against a head of approximately 2,000 ft.-which by the way was a reciprocating pump-reduced the pumping cost to the neighborhood of one-fifth of the previous steam cost. . The high steam cost was probably due to leakage in the engine and the loss in transmission in the mine, the pumps being located almost half a, mile from the boiler plant.

If one holds up a prism, or wedge of glass, with narrow angle, say l° to 2O, and compares the transmitted image with the image seen above or below the prism, the former will be found to be thrown to one side by an amount varying with the angle of the wedge. Speaking of the two rays as the direct ray and the bent ray, we may say, that when the bisecting plane of the prism is at right angles to the line of sight, the angle between the direct ray and the bent ray will be constant for any given prism. If now we place a prism or wedge of glass in such a position that it half-covers the objective of a telescope, we shall obtain on looking through it two images of every object seen—one image by the direct ray, which comes through the unaovered half of the objective, the other which comes through the prism, and is the image by the bent ray. The angle of divergence of these two raps will be constant and unalterable, whether the telescope is directed to a near object, with its eye-piece at increased distance from its objective, or upon a ' distant object, with eye-piece nearer to the objective. That is to say, if the " throw " or apparent dislocation of the image is one foot in one hundred feet it will be two feet in two hundred, ten feet in a thousand, and so on. The usual form of stadia-telescope has at the focal point of the objective two spider-lines, placed at a definite distance apart and intended, let us say, to represent a throw of one foot in one hundred feet. But as the distance between lines remains the same, while the distance from the objective to the webs diflers with every variation in the distance of observed objects, it follows that the angle between the lines of sight which these two spider-lines define cannot be con stant, but must vary with every increase or decrease of distance be tween the instrument and the object viewed. With the depletion of our older, and relatively shallow, oilfields and the necessity for securing new production from deeper horizons, much attention is being given to the improvement of oil-well pumps in order that they may function satisfactorily under the more difficult conditions imposed by increased depth. Until recently, practically all of the world's petroleum was secured from wells less than 3000 ft. deep, whereas horizons are now being explored to depths of from 5000 to 7000 ft. in some of the more prolific fields, and it seems probable that the greater part of the future supply must come from depths in excess of 3000 ft. While much of the early production in a new field is obtained by natural-flow methods, when the stimulus of high gas pressure fails, recourse must be had to some method of pumping. The perfection of a pump capable of economically and efficiently lifting oil from depths ranging from 3000 to 7000 ft. is therefore a matter of prime importance to the oil-producing industry. This paper is offered as an estimate of the present state of development of the oil-well plunger pump and as a review of the general principles involved in its operation in deep-well pumping. A design for a new type of oil-well pump embodying several novel features, is also described. Essential Parts of Oil-well Plungeb Pump The pump commonly used in lifting oil from wells in American practice is of the simple displacement type, in which a plunger equipped with a working, or traveling, valoe is given a vertical reciprocating motion in a stationary working barrel. The latter is suspended from the surface by tubing, submerged in the well fluid, and is equipped at its lower end with a stationary standing valve; Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate two common types of oil-well pumps. THE name "tripoli" is used to designate a number of more or less similar types of silica of sedimentary origin. Usually they are spoken of as "soft" silicas, and are light, very fine grained, porous, and friable. Structure is microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline. The deposits are the residual product of weathering and occur in massive form, either blocky or in friable masses. Tripoli is the end product of the weathering of siliceous Limestones, cherty limestones, or cherts. Weathering removes the calcium carbon- ate, leaving a finely divided siliceous residue to which the name "tripoli" has been applied. Authorities differ as to whether the chert accumulates first and is converted into tripoli or the tripoli is derived by direct decay from various forms of silica during initial weathering of the Limestone. It has also been asserted that tripolis were formed in situ in essentially their present condition as a flocculent, colloidal silica, but it is now believed by most geologists that varying degrees of pressure, combined with one or more methods of origin, have influenced the characteristics of the deposits. Considerable confusion has existed as to what constitutes tripoli. Owing to the similarity of names, tripolite, a type of diatomaceous earth found originally in Tripoli in northern Africa, has been erroneously called tripoli. Tripoli, however, contains no diatoms, the distinguishing characteristic of diatomaceous earth. The material mined in the Missouri-Oklahoma area has been considered by the trade to be the type material, and many feel that the term "tripoli" should more properly be restricted to the product of this region. Although also designated as soft silica, it would be less misleading, perhaps, if the siliceous material mined in southern Illinois were called amorphous silica. Both the Missouri-Oklahoma and Illinois materials are very high in silica. Different in composition, as it is very much lower in silica content than tripoli or amorphous silica, yet included under the classification of tripoli in Bureau of Mines statistical data, is the small but important output of rottenstone in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. The principal justification for grouping these three types of silica is similarity of use.

The work described in this paper was carried out in the Research Laboratories of the British Aluminium Company Ltd., under the general direction of A. G. C. Gwyer, Scientific Manager of the Company. In considering the effect of stress?corrosion conditions on metals, or the failure of metal through stress corrosion, it is evidently advisable to adopt a clear definition of the meaning of those phrases. There appears to be general agreement that stress-corrosion conditions may be defined as the continuous application of static stress to a metal while it is exposed to corrosive conditions, but recognition of the occurrence of true stress-corrosion in a metal is often a difficult matter giving rise to some confusion. For the purpose of this paper stress corrosion in a metal is defined as the acceleration of corrosion by the application of static stress. On this view it is necessary to test a metal not merely under stress-corrosion conditions, but also under the same corrosion conditions without the simultaneous application of stress, if the liability of the metal to stress corrosion is to be assessed. Failure of a metal under stress-corrosion conditions is sometimes quoted as evidence of stress corrosion (for example, by Althof(1)2), but this evidence is totally inadequate if the above definition is

To preface these remarks, it is not intended that this paper be a criticism of anyone or any organization involved in drafting the current regulations, for it appears that everyone involved in the process has made an extreme effort to be safe. We wish to show that in this case by making huge safety margins, we have created an unsafe condition in another area. That is by creating vast safety margins in the area of mobile transmitter intensity versus distance scales we have caused a severe handicap in the use of the mobile transmitter in securing blasting areas. The use of these mobile transmitters, which are absolutely essential in clearing areas where there are woods, mountains, or urban structures is virtually eliminated because of the safety factors prescribed in the regulations. We wish to show that these mobile transmitter safety factors are much too great, and can be traded off to increase the margin of safety in the ability to clear blasting areas.

The preoccupation with cyanide as an environmental issue has been described as virtually an obsession for state and federal agencies enacting regulations for environmental protection. This seems likely to continue in legislative planning, as well. This is despite the fact that the only significant group of cyanide-related incidents has been the bird-mortality occurrences, predominantly in arid areas, and these have been greatly reduced by a concerted effort by operators. What follows is a brief list of areas for which the industry may need either additional information or plans for defensive strategies over the next two to five years.

An Analytical Solution to the Batch comminution Equation R. P. King, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Eng.), M. Se. (Eng.), Ph.D. (Visitor). An analytical solution to the batch-grinding equation is presented in terms of the generalized hypergeometric series and the confluent hypergeometnc function. This solution is valid for selection functions that are describe~ piece-wise by functional forms of the type KOXB and by normalized breakage functions of the type B(x,x') = (x/x')x. These functional forms are sufficiently general to Include most practical cases. In particular, they can be used to describe selection functions that have a maximum.

There are approximately 40 million tons per year of phosphate rock produced in the United States, half of it by flotation. The bulk of this is used to produce diammonium phosphate, an essential ingredient in the commercial fertilizer mixes used by the thriving U.S. agricultural community. This paper describes the mineral beneficiation practices of the phosphate industry, with special emphasis on flotation. There is also an attempt to include those items that might be considered emerging technologies for the industry as it faces the problems of a diminishing high-grade reserve and the necessity for implementing dolomite/francolite separations.

Subsidence profiles over Saskatchewan potash mines exhibit forms which cannot be explained by existing subsidence models. The subsidence is affected by bridging of competent rocks. A modification of the theory can explain the observed displacement of subsidence profiles due to bridging. An unusual shallow secondary subsidence trough has been observed extending two to three kilometers outside the primary subsidence. The secondary subsidence is explained as an elastic compression inresponse to a drop in pore water pressure in the vicinity of the caving zone. The concept of pore water pressure may lead to a safe extraction limit for Saskatchewan mines.

The ores of the district are treated at this mill by the lixiviation process, consisting of drying, crushing, chloridizing-roasting and lixiviation by hyposulphite and Russell solutions. This paper proposes two units (believed to be new) for designating, respectively, capacity and efficiency for primary and intermediate crushers. Capacity Operators know that the tonnage of rock that can be put through a particular crusher in a given time depends primarily upon the crusher setting (open setting for jaw and primary gyratory types; closed setting for cones and rolls), and secondarily on the lithological character of the feed, its maximum size, the amount of fines that it carries, its moisture content, and the method of feeding. The proposed capacity formula states a relationship between all of these factors in one empirical equation, as follows: Tr = TR80K'K" [I] in which Tr, called "reduction tons per hour" is the new capacity unit; T = tons of feed per hour requiring crushing; R80 = "80-per cent reduction ratio"; and K, K', and K" are constants that approximate quantitatively lithological character, moisture content and method of feeding, respectively. T is the hourly weight of material in the feed that is coarser than the coarsest discharge of the crusher. (For marked departures from the normal specific-gravity range—2.5 to 2.7—T should be adjusted to corresponding volumes.) In the crushers under consideration, discharge from the crushing zone is limited by the minimum dimension of a particle. Passage of the particle through a square-mesh screen is limited by its intermediate dimension. Sheppardl has shown that the ratio of maximum: intermediate: minimum average dimensions of broken rock fragments may be taken as about 1.5:=:0,6 for nonslabby rocks such as are normally crushed, while for slabby rocks, such as thin-bedded sedimentaries, foliated schists and gneisses, and the blocky metamorphics, the ratio is of the average order I.3:I:o.3, with the possibility of an even smaller relative value for the thickness. Gaudin2 finds the corresponding ratio for —I50 + 200-mesh pyrite to be I.4: I:0.6. The hourly tonnage of crusher-plant feed, therefore, should be diminished by the amount thereof that would pass a square-mesh screen of which the aperture is S times the crusher setting, where S is a shape factor with the value 1.7 for rocks that break exceptionally cubic; 2 for ores and rocks that exhibit no appreciabie tendency to slabbiness; and 2.5 to 3, or, in exceptional cases, even larger, when the tendency to slabbiness is marked. R80 is the quotient of the theoretical square-mesh aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the feed, divided by the aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the product.
