A formula for quantitative efficiency is proposed, in which the efficiency value is a function of the improperly distributed material at the gravity of separation effected by the cleaning equipment. The misplaced material is expressed as a percentage of the total material discharged from the equipment. Numerous examples are given, demonstrating application of the formula to various types of separation, including multiple-product separations.

THE following scanty notes on the Roumanian oil-region may serve as an introduction to more detailed future study and description. The Roumauian oil-belt, follows the outer edge of the sweep of the Carpathian Mountains, and may, in a broad sense, be regarded as a prolongation of the Galician belt. It is distributed over a tract of country from 300 to 400 miles in length, with a width of from 15 to 20 miles, and is believed to cover an area of at least 20,000 hectares (59,420 acres). The Government claims that 16,000 to 17,000 hectares of its land is petroliferous. The primary deposits of petroleum are considered to be in the Padeogene (Oligocene) and the Neogene (the salines of the Miocene) formations. Most of the other repositories, especially those of Muntenie, are only secondary, the petroleum there having been introduced by the orogeneric movements which raised the Carpathian Mountains. The oil-field has been divided by the Roumanian survey into two regions, the Flysch and the Sub-Carpathian, as is shown in the accompanying sketch-map, Fig. 1.(p. 518). So far as is yet, known, practically all the seepages and .productive pits and wells are situated oil anticlinals. Those which outcrop in the Flysch region. (called Paleogene anticlinals), as indicated in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, are : Solontz, Middle Oligocene; Moineshti, Moineshti and Tagu-Ocna-beds of the Eocene.

An application of material requirements planning (MRP) to coal mine inventory control is presented. MRP is an efficient material control system that integrates the production planning and inventory management functions. Net material requirements are determined from the production forecast utilizing bill of material files, the inventory status file, and the purchase order status file. Net requirements are computed for each period in a specified planning horizon, and purchase orders, offset by lead time, are initiated routinely to ensure timely receipt of materials. The MRP system is especially useful in production-inventory systems in which con¬sumption of materials is directly production dependent.

The thermal reactions of l-methylindole were studied in the temperature range of 525° to 627° C in a flow reactor. The major products consisted of 2-methylindole, 3-methylindole, indole, quinoline, hydrogen, and methane. 2-Methylindole is formed from 1-methylindole by an irreversible isomerization reaction. The 2-methylindole isomerizes in a reversible manner to 3-methyl-indole, the equilibrium favoring the 3-methyl isomer. Indole is formed directly from 1-methylindole. Quinoline is formed from l-methylindole, 2-methylindole, and 3-methylindole.

THE classical work on the electrical conductivity of alloys was carried out by Matthiessen and his coworkers1 in the early 1860's. He attempted to correlate the electrical conductivity of alloys with their constitution diagrams, but the information regarding the latter was too meager for success. Guertler2 reworked Matthiessen's and other conductivity data in 1906 on the basis of volume composition (an application of Le Chatelier's principle with implications as to temperature and pressure effects), and obtained the following relationships between specific conductivity and phase diagrams (plotted as volume compositions) : 1—For two-phase regions, electrical conductivity can be considered as a linear function of volume composition, following the law of mixtures. 2—For solid solutions, except intermetallic compounds, the electrical conductivity is lowered by solute additions first very extensively and later more gradually, such that a minimum occurs in systems with complete solid solubility. This minimum forms from a catenary type of curve. Intermetallic compound formation with variable compound composition results in a maximum conductivity at the stoi-chiometric composition. Landauer" has recently considered the resistivity of binary metallic two-phase mixtures on the basis of randomly distributed spherical-shaped regions of two phases having different conductivities. His derivation predicts deviations from the law of mixtures which fit measurements on alloys of 6 systems out of 13 considered. Volency (Ionic Charge) Perhaps the first comprehensive discussion of the electrical resistivity of dilute solid-solution alloys was presented by Norbury' in 1921. He collected sufficient data to show that the change in resistance caused by 1 atomic pct binary solute additions is periodic* in character. The difference between the period and/or the group of the solvent and solute elements could be correlated with the increase in resistance. Linde5-7 determined the electrical resistivity (p) of solid solutions containing up to about 4 atomic pct of various solutes in copper, silver, and gold at several temperatures. He reported that the extrapolated"" increase in resistance per atomic percent addition is a function of the square of the difference in group number of the solute and solvent as follows: ?p= a + K(N-Ng)2 where a and K are empirical constants and N and Ng are group numbers of the constituents. This empirical relation was subsequently rationalized theoretically by Mott,8 who showed that the scattering of conduction electrons is proportional to the square of the scattering charge at lattice sites. Thus, the change in resistance of dilute alloys is propor-t,ional to the square of the difference between the ionic charge (or valence) of the solvent and solute when other factors are neglected. Mott's difficulty in evaluating the volume of the lattice near each atom site where the valency electrons tend to segre-gate: limited his calculations to proportionality relations. Recently, Robinson and Dorn" reconfirmed this relationship for dilute aluminum solid-solution alloys at 20°C, using an effective charge of 2.5 for aluminum. In terms of valence, Linde's equation becomes ?P= {K2 + K1 (Z8 -Za)2} A where K1 and K2 are coefficients, A is atomic percent solute, Z, is valence of solvent, and Zß, is valence of solute. Plots of these data for copper, silver, gold, and aluminum alloys are shown in Fig. 1. The values of K1 and K2 are constant for a given chemical period (P), but vary from period to period. The value of K, increases irregularly with increasing difference between the period of the solvent and solute element (AP), being zero when AP is zero. The value of K, appears to have no obvious periodic relationship. All factors other than valence that affect resistivity are gathered in these coefficients. Because of the nature of the coefficients, Eq. 1 is of limited use in estimating the effects of solute additions on resistivity unless a large amount of experimental data are already available on the systems involved. It is the purpose of the first part of this report to investigate the factors that may be included in the coefficients of Linde's equation. On this basis, it is hoped that the relative effects of solute additions on resistivity can be better estimated from basic data, leading to a more convenient alloy design procedure. It is well 10,11 that phenomena that decrease the perfection of the periodic field in an atomic lattice, such as the introduction of a solute atom or strain due to deformation, will also increase the electrical resistivity. Thus, in an effort to relate changes in electrical resistivity to alloy composition, it appears appropriate to consider the atomic characteristics related to solution and strain hardening

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is developing new dewatering technology to permit the recycling of iron values contained in wet steel plant sludges. In laboratory tests, Q-BOP fume sludge was dewatered to 12% moisture by displacing water with acetone in a plate-and-frame pressure filter. Acetone is reclaimed through distillation at lower cost than conventional thermal drying of the sludge. The projected additional energy requirement for acetone treatment of the sludge, including acetone recovery, is $5 to $7 per dry ton.

In presenting the subject of " Armored Turrets for Coast Defense " to this Institute, I am indebted to the Gruson Ironworks, a company incorporated under the laws of the State of New York, for valuable information, model and plans, by which I hope to make clear the construction and peculiar merits of this class of gun-protection. I wish it understood, however, that this is not an undeveloped and untried inventor's ideal, but an advanced and fully perfected system, which has long since passed the experimental stage and has been adopted by most of the foreign governments, after years of extensive experimenting and the expenditure of millions of dollars. The present seems an appropriate time to present the matter to the scientific public, since, for the first time, it is possible to produce these turrets in this country, of American material, and made by American workmen, owing to an agreement entered into between the Gruson Iron-works and the Fried. Krupp Grusonwerk, of Magdeburg-Buckau, Germany, where they have hitherto alone been manufactured. Although its full development and present perfection have been attained at the German works, it may be of historic interest to state that the first idea of using a rotating protected platform for large guns originated with Mr. Theo. Ruggles Timby, a native of the State of New York, who filed a caveat in 1843 for a " metallic revolving fort, to be used on land or water, and to be revolved by propelling engines located within the same and acting upon suitable mechanism." This was followed in 1862 by the issuance to Mr. Timby of two patents (No. 35,846 and No. 36,593) covering the ideas described in his caveat of 1843. Solvent floods using slugs of solvent have been found to show continuity in behavior from the vapor pressure of the solvent to the critical pressure for the two-component driving gas-solvent system. In the pressure region between the solvent vapor pressure and the critical pressure for the gas-solvent system, the gar and solvent are only partially miscible. Although complete miscibility cannot be obtained at these pressures, complete oil recovery is possible in principle. In two-phase solvent floods the solvent is propagated tllrough the reservoir, primarily, in the vapor phase. The carrier gas requirements constitute a significant factor in the economics of the process. A qualitative theory is proposed for estimating the amount of dry gas required to move the solvent through the reservoir. The theory shows that for two-phase solvent floods the total gas needed is a minimum at the vapor pressure of the solvent and at the critical pressure for the gas-solvent system, and is a maximum at some intermediate pressure. The predictions of the theory are supported by experimental studies using methane, butane and decane or methane, propane and decane in a natural sandstone core. INTRODUCTION Previously, solvent slug processes have been found effective for oil recovery in two pressure ranges. First, conventional miscible displacements are possible at pressures greater than the critical pressure for the gas-solvent system. Second, Jenks, et al,' have shown that, at pressures slightly in excess of the vapor pressure of the solvent, a solvent slug can be propagated through a reservoir by a gas essentially insoluble in the liquid solvent. The solvent bank displaces the oil ahead of it. Both of these processes, at least ideally, are capable of recovering all of the oil in the swept regions. Slug processes for which the gas and solvent are partially miscible have not been considered; that is, those systems for which the solvent and driving gas form two equilibrium phases in which the vapor phase contains a significant amount of solvent and the liquid phase an appreciable amount of the driving gas. Welge and Johnson' have shown that the gas needed to movc a solvent slug through the reservoir increases with increasing pressure above the vapor pressure of the solvent. It will be shown that solvent slug processes can, theoretically, recover all of the oil at any pressure greater than the vapor pressure of the solvent. But the amount of gas required to move the solvent through the reservoir depends very much on the pressure and temperature. In the present study a maximum in the gas requirements was both predicted theoretically and observed experimentally. This result has not been reported previously, and would not have been predicted from the Welge and Johnson model. The gas requirements are a minimum at the pressures corresponding to the vapor pressure of the solvent and again at the critical pressure for the gas-solvent system, and are a maximum at some intermediate pressure. AN APPROXIMATE THEORY FOR TWO-PHASE SOLVENT FLOODING The differences and similarities between conventional solvent floods and two-phase solvent floods are best understood by referring to concepts developed for miscible displacement in which miscibility is generated in the reservoir. In Fig. 1(A), a ternary diagram is shown for a hypothetical gas-solvent-oil system. To be rigorous the three components should each consist of a single molecular species. The pressure for Fig. 1(A) is greater than the critical pressure for the binary gas-solvent system at the specified temperature. Diagrams of this type are the ones most frequently referred to in discussions of enriched-gas drive and miscible displacement. A limiting tie line is shown tangent to the two-phase envelope and intersecting the gas-solvent line at Point A. To obtain generated miscibility with this type system, others have shown that, for an oil of Composition D, a mixture of gas and solvent must be injected which is richer in solvent than that composition indicated by A. An oil repeatedly contacted with a gas phase richer than A changes toward a composition which would be at equilibrium with the injected mixture, that is, a composition lying on a tie line which passes through the injected-gas composition. Since no such tie line exists, the oil is enriched to the point at which it becomes directly miscible with the injected mixture. At pressures lower than the critical pressure for the gas-solvent system, other types of phase diagrams are observed. The ones of interest in this paper are for pressures greater than the vapor pressure of the solvent, but less than the critical pressure of the gas-solvent system. Such a ternary diagram is shown on Fig. 1(B). In this case, two-phase behavior is observed not only for gas-oil mixtures, but also for certain compositions in the gas-solvent system. THE name for this new method of mining is derived from a composition of Horizontal, Radial, Diamond, and the drilling is from raises. This method, worked out at Copper Mountain, B.C., is believed to be distinct in many features from other known methods. GEOLOGY The ore deposits of Copper Mountain are related to the Copper Mountain stock, which is an ideal example of the magmatic differentiation in that it grades from a basic gabbro at the border to an almost pure orthoclase-pegmatite core. The "contact" ore bodies lie along the contact of the gabbro and an older complex of volcanics and sediment termed the "Wolfe Creek" formation. These older rocks, collectively referred to as greenstone, had been fractured prior to the intrusion of the stock and were highly metamorphosed during the intrusion. The "outlying" ore bodies are somewhat different in character, though a similar structural pattern prevails. It is believed that a deep-seated magma of which the Copper Mountain stock is a part has given off solutions that caused a partial granitization of some of the volcanics. Mining problems are caused further by the presence of a series of soft barren dikes intersecting a great many of the ore bodies, which are about 30 ft. wide, strike north-south, and dip at a high angle to the east; and are further increased by the presence of four major faults, with a great many minor faults running at acute angles from them. Fault zones average 8 ft. in width, and consist of gouge and breccia. They strike northeast and dip steeply to the northwest. The faults cut through the ore zones and the dikes, and continue on into the gabbro. The general mine structure with two types of ore bodies, bounded by weak walls and intersected by several series of soft barren dikes and major faults, indicated that a method of mining should be devised that would remove the ore at low cost with the least disturbance of the waste walls and dikes. THEORETICAL ESTIMATE OF STOPING WITH THE DIAMOND DRILL After consideration of various methods, the most suitable one appeared to be horizontal drilling to break the ore in a manner similar to shrinkage stoping. Drilling vertical holes or rings from a bench and breaking to an open slot was eliminated because the weak walls of ore, dike or waste would not permit this type of opening. It was then decided to drill either horizontal radial holes from a raise or parallel holes from a slot cut across the ore body. After discussion, the latter method was believed unsuitable, for the following reasons:

"GeneralThe Malartic Gold Fields mill is presently treating ore from four different companies. The ore is delivered by truck, by the shipper, and dumped into the Malartic Gold Fields ore bin. This ore varies in size from 'Run of mine' to minus 8 11, All ore is crushed to pass a 3/ 8 11 x 4 11 cross slotted screen.Weighing and SamplingAfter crushing the ore passes over an adequate-weigher (250 T .P.H. capacity) on its way to the fine ore bins. This weigher has a remote counter at the sampling point.A 36” Vezin sampler cuts 15% from the ore stream as it enters the mill bins. This portion is elevated, by means of a short belt conveyor, to feed the No. 2 Vezin sampler. (This elevation is necessary to give headroom for the following machines). The ore on the conveyor is levelled to give a uniform stream to the second sample cutter. The second, third and fourth cutters are 2411 •The No. 2 Vezin sampler cuts 19% from its feed and this portion falls directly into a 1611 x 1011 Denver rolls crusher. This crusher reduces the ore to -1/ 8 11 , approximately. The discharge from the rolls crusher falls on a revolving circular plate with scraper, which gives a uniform stream to the No. 3 Vezin sampler.The No. 3 Vezin cuts 10% from its feed. This portion falls on another revolving plate to give a uniform stream to feed No. 4 Vezin."

GENERAL STATEMENT Data frequently can be collected by several dif¬ferent methods. The method required for the nec¬essary precision for inflow prediction to mines should be selected and other methods avoided. Pre¬cision monitoring or measuring techniques fre¬quently require more time, expertise, and expense in their implementation that may not be justifiable. The temporal distribution of the data needs also may dictate the method used for data collection. Continuous recording devices may be required for time sensitive data whereas point measurements of other parameters may be adequate. Data needs will vary as the hydrologic investigation proceeds. In¬itial data needs may require only a qualitative col¬lection of data such as the areal distribution of precipitation. Subsequent data needs may require the measurement of ground water levels to the near¬est hundredth of a foot. Data requirements can be difficult to fulfill for ground water systems. This is particularly true for anisotropic, heterogeneous hydrostratigraphic units since the hydrogeologic parameters vary both ver¬tically and areally. Techniques exist for determining the storage characteristics of both unconfined and confined hydrostratigraphic units but these pro¬cedures require the installation of multiple wells in the same unit which may be impractical. Specific tests are discussed subsequently that permit the determination of vertical hydraulic conductivity. Data collected from field procedures or tests are generally preferred to laboratory derived data. This is especially true for hydrogeologic parameters such as hydraulic conductivity. SURFACE WATER SYSTEMS Precipitation Precipitation data can be collected from sources that maintain a historical record. The US Depart¬ment of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmos¬pheric Administration (NOAA), maintains weather observation stations across the country. Such a sta¬tion frequently can be found near a proposed mine site but the type of weather data collected varies from station to station. Fortunately, precipitation data are collected ubiquitously. The data collected by NOAA can be purchased for the area of interest in the form of monthly and annual tabulations. Private weather stations constitute a second source of precipitation data. Existing data usually are analyzed by one of three methods. The station average method merely sums the depth of precipitation at each station and divides the sum by the number of stations as fol¬lows: [ ] where Pavg is the average precipitation (L), P, is the depth of precipitation at station i (L), and N is the total number of stations. This method is applicable where there are a relatively large number of stations uniformly distributed across the area (Hjelnfelt and Cassidy, 1975, pp. 71-72). The second method, called the Thiessen poly¬gon method, weights the precipitation at each sta¬tion in direct proportion to the area it represents without consideration of topography. The stations are plotted on a map and perpendicular bisectors are drawn on the lines connecting the stations. The polygons formed by these bisectors constitute the area that the precipitation for that station repre¬sents. The overall precipitation can be calculated with the following equation:

The object of this paper is to present a theory of the formation of fissures, which seems to be supported by all available data. The investigation is, in the main, an exact one, and irregularities of the rock-structure are generalized. From the conclusions drawn a general classification of fissures is made, and this should be of practical use in the comparison of mineral deposits. The theory also throws some light on the equilibrium of the earth's crust and the depth of action of surface-waters. Incidentally, additions are made to the theory of earthquake-slips. Former Theory. It has been previously pointed out that the "jointing" of homogeneous rocks occurs in two sets of planes, at right angles to one another, and making angles of 450 with the directions of greatest and least principal stress.' The theory by which this fact is explained does not, however, account for fissures and faults, because normal faults are usually more vertically, and reverse faults more horizontally, inclined than 450. The "jointing law" is based on the following axiom: In a homogeneous mass under pressure, rupture must take place on the lines of maximum tangential stress."2 This law applies, with fair approximation, to the tests on jointing which can be made in the laboratory, and as nearly as can be expected to the natural jointing-planes in rock-masses, where the stresses are not very great; but it entirely fails to account for fissure-fractures.3

Efficiency of back up rolls depends mostly on two parameters – length of campaign and dressing amount after the campaign. The longer the campaign (in terms of rolled tones) is, the higher the dressing amount. To solve this task properly it is necessary to know the distribution of accumulated damage in the working layer of the roll caused by previous campaigns and by loads (separating force and bending) during present campaign respecting changing conditions of material properties (hardness) through radius of the roll. To find an optimum dressing amount an algorithm has been developed and specialized computer program will be presented, that takes real measured loads during the backup roll campaign, calculates fatigue damage in the roll and suggests relevant dressing amount. This can help to prolong service life of rolls, minimize the risk of spalls and reach maximum efficiency in terms of rolled tones/km per roll.

"Given the properties, locations and quantities of material to be hauled and the dump locations and capacities, the designer wishes to select the type and number of trucks and loading equipment required. Accordingly, software is being developed to assist in creation of the equipment, material and road network data bases, in selection of equipment, materials and road networks from these data bases, and in evaluation of the expected productivities both in a rapid, non-interactive, approximate fashion and a more detailed interactive fashion which permits the user to act as superintendent, if he so chooses. The basic technology has been developed and applied to an open-pit copper mine and is being refined and generalized for oil sands and coal mining applications.BackgroundA set of mathematical and interactive computer models are under development to aid in the selection of equipment and operating policies for an open-pit oil sands mine being planned by Canstar Oil Sands Ltd. This paper describes the computer models being developed of truck haulage systems. Although the interactive truck haulage model is based primarily on a model developed by the National Research Council in collaboration with Glenayre Electronics Ltd. of North Vancouver and Lornex Mines Limited(2).(3l, substantial changes and improvements are being incorporated to greatly increase its generality re equipment types, road network characteristics, dispatching and supervisory policies, etc. Although this paper is principally devoted to the truck haulage model, discussion is included concerning its interactions with other models."

This paper is aimed to confirm the possibility to excavate fractured rock masses by using EPB shields, even in presence of relevant water tables. This verification is based on laboratory test experiences carried out at TUSC laboratory of Politecnico di Torino, where the natural material is tested in order to verify the suitability of a certain conditioning technique in particular conditions. This is due to the fact that every case should be studied apart from existing studies on a certain rock type, as other factors such as fragmentation of the rock mass, natural water content and porosity of the rock can considerably influence the final result of the conditioning process. The most important aspects that allow to consider the conditioning of fractured rock masses as suitable are: possibility to create a plastic paste that can transmit the pressure at the front in a effective way; reduce the permeability of the spoil material in order to reduce the possibility of water leakage inside the chamber and eventually in the tunnel; verify the consistency of the conditioned material for the extraction through the screw conveyors and the belt conveyors. For this research an argillitic schistose rock mass, with some quartzitic and calcareous inclusions, has been studied by using different level of conditioning in order to verify the suitability of an eventual EPB excavation through this formation.

IN the course of a return flight from Olympia, Wash., to Laramie, Wyo., an airborne magnetometer profile was recorded continuously. The level of flight was controlled at barometric levels along segments of the flight. Barometric altitude was changed from 3000 ft to a maximum of 12,000 ft above mean sea level to take care of topographic variations. Terrain clearance varied from 800 to 7300 ft. Horizontal positions were obtained by recording and tying to cities, towns, airports, river crossings, and other landmarks in the course of the flight. Figs. 1-6 show the course of the flight and the general geologic and tectonic features traversed. The flight line begins south of Olympia, Wash., and proceeds south across the Puget-Willemette depression to the Columbia River. Thence it proceeds eastward along the Washington-Oregon border across the Cascade Mts. and lava flows and the Umatilla basin to Pendleton, Ore. From Pendleton it traverses the Blue Mts. uplift of Oregon in a southeasterly direction, and then to the Boise basin of southwestern Idaho. The flight line swings in an easterly direction as it passes over the Snake River downwarp to the south of the Idaho batholith. It then passes over the northern portion of the Great Basin and the heavily overthrust area at the intersection of the Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming borders. The flight then assumes an easterly course to cross the series of basins and uplifts of southern Wyoming and terminates near the western flank of the Laramie uplift. It should be clearly understood that all statements in this article pertaining to the magnetics were interpreted on the assumption of elongate anomalies transverse to a single profile. Hence any theories or ideas advanced here are in line with future paths of research rather than trying to prove or disprove existing data. Magnetic Interpretation: Depth determinations were made by the slope method of Peters: which is stated as follows: "Draw a line in the maximum slope (at the point of inflection); draw a line whose slope is one-half this maximum slope; draw two lines parallel to this line tangent to the anomaly curve. The horizontal distance between the points of tangency is approximately equal to 1.6 times the depth [or the distance times 0.6251." Certain assumptions must be made for determinations of the causes of the magnetic anomalies:' 1) The anomaly is caused by a susceptibility change rather than basement relief. 2) Polarization of the basement rocks is in the same direction as the earth's inducing field. 3) The disturbing magnetic mass has a great horizontal length in comparison to its width and its sides are vertical and of great vertical extent. 4) The anomaly is unique and not affected by the anomalies from nearby sources.

Tile Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory is a member of the Engineering Research Department of North Carolina State University. The Laboratory is engaged mainly in applied nonmetallic mineral processing research to assist the North Carolina mining industry. A few out of state projects are handled at times. The Laboratory helped to bring the flotation process to North Carolina feldspar, spodumene, mica and phosphate producers and maintains versatile batch and pilot plant facilities at Asheville. It is of interest that North Carolina has now one of the newest and largest flotation plants at Lee Creek where Texas Gulf Sulphur Company produces 10,000 tons of phosphate concentrate per day, and one of the smallest flotation plants at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company's fiberglass plant in Shelby, North Carolina where $50,000 per year of platinum-rhodium metal is reclaimed from wasted fiberglass furnace refractories in a tiny flotation operation of pilot plant size. The conservation of mineral resources through improved processing methods has been the object of most of the Laboratory's projects. This work has been extremely interesting and rewarding in many instances. Or, the example of projects for Kings Mountain Mica Company it will be demonstrated how waste could be reduced step by step from 20 tons of waste per ton of product to LO tons of product per ton of waste by improved processing methods. Brick, high grade potash feldspar, and silica sand are now produced from formerly wasted materials. AL this time Laboratory work sponsored by three feldspar companies, the State of North Carolina, and the U. S. Bureau of Mines, is aimed at reducing the amounts of feldspar tailings in the Spruce Pine area. Mineral dressing techniques are applied to reclaim saleable mineral products such as feldspar, mica quartz, and to make more uniform material for possible ceramic and other applications. Processes to produce new products such as sand-lime brick, and lightweight foamed autoclaved calcium silicate building products will be tested.

It is comprised of Exploration, Metallurgical Processing and Mining Divisions.The Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) has the mandate to contribute to the profitability, competitiveness, safety and growth of the Canadian mining industry by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy in an environmentally conscious manner through the development of innovative technology by managing cooperative industry focused research programs.Current membership includes about ten Canadian mining companies. Past research has largely focused on base metal mineral processing. The Division wants to expand its research base to include all areas of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy.Past performance and plans for the future will be highlighted in the presentation."

INDUSTRIAL mineral history shows that the entrance of new, nonmetallic minerals into commercial production can be expected to occur from time to time. Latest entrant into the field is wollastonite. Except for one short-lived period in Kern County, Calif., starting in 1933, wollastonite has never before been produced on a commercial scale. But the signs are up for its entrance as an economic factor in the mineral market. Small scale experimental production from a deposit near Willsboro, N. Y., started about 1943. A pilot plant was built in 1949-50 and irregular, small scale, production has continued. In early 1951 Godfrey L. Cabot, Inc. of Boston, world's largest producer of carbon black, took an operational lease on the property to study the deposits and make market surveys. This became Cabot's first venture in the mineral field, when they took over operations and began design of a new mill, expected in production in 1953. Properties The properties and major uses of wollastonite are comparable to New York fibrous talc. It has about the same specific gravity and index of refraction as talc, but is somewhat whiter and softer. The two most important fields of use, paint and ceramics, are the same as for talc. Ground wollastonite has a fiber length as much as 13 to 15 times the diameter. This particular property makes it applicable in the paint field and others. In addition, the length-diameter ratio may be controlled to rather narrow limits by choice of grinding method. Another important commercial property is brightness or whiteness. Wollastonite reads from 92 to 96 pct of MgO on the G.E. brightness meter for a 99 pct -325 mesh grind. Purity and uniformity of product are important. Chemically, the wollastonite now being mined analyzes SiO2 51.76, CaO 47.56, FeO 0.46, MnO 0.04, and H2O 0.09 pct. Theoretically pure wollastonite analyzes SiO2 51.75 and CaO 48.25 pct. This analysis indicates over 98 pct calcium silicate, with only small amounts of contaminating ingredients. That these ingredients are not detrimental to color or brightness is shown by the high brightness value of the fine ground material. [ ] By-product calcium silicate from electric furnace production of phosphoric acid has little physical re-semblance. to this wollastonite, being an off color white, and lacking in fibrous crystalline character. Minerology Wollastonite is a calcium metasilicate, CaSiO3, a white, medium hard, fibrous mineral. In this deposit wollastonite occurs as well crystallized aggregates of bladed crystals intergrown with garnet, and with a few percent of green diopside. The beneficiated product is about 75 pct wollastonite, 15 pct garnet, and 10 pct waste, largely middling. Wollastonite-garnet ore occurs in at least two beds. The main bed, varying in true thickness from 30 to 70 ft, dips into the hill at an average 30° and is enclosed in gneisses. Diamond drilling has proven the orebody to an average depth of 200 ft along 2000 ft of outcrop with adequate tonnage for many years of quarry operation. The wollastonite-garnet ratio varies locally, but average composition is uniform over long distances. A friable ore, it is easy to drill, shoot, and crush. Beneficiation Unlike talc this ore has to be beneficiated. Successful treatment depends upon the fact that it contains virtually nothing but wollastonite, garnet and a minor percentage of diopside. A very pure wollastonite product can be made by high intensity magnetic and/or gravity separation methods.
