The personal dust monitor (PDM) is a sampling device developed for measuring the personal exposure to coal mine dust of mine workers. The device is based on proprietary technology known as the tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) originally developed as a fixed- site environmental particulate mass monitor by Rupprecht and Patashnick Co., Inc., Albany, NY. Currently, the monitoring of exposure to coal mine dust relies on periodic samples taken by traditional coal mine dust sampling units that use a cyclone, filter, pump, and laboratory measurement of the filter mass. Better measurement of mine dust levels has been the goal of industry and labor for nearly two decades. PDM technology offers accurate, end-of-shift and near real time assessment of worker dust exposure. Laboratory and underground tests compared measurements taken by a prototype PDM-2 (a two-piece TEOM) to the average of multiple personal dust samplers monitoring the same space. In the range of mass loadings P between 0.5 and 4.0 mg/m the PDM met a 25% accuracy criterion 95% of the time with 95% confidence. However, some questions still exist about potential bias between types of coal. The prototype two-piece device is in the process of being combined into a single unit that also contains the miners' cap lamp creating a more ergonomic dust sampling system.

Reduce costs of recontouring surface mined land by improving bulldozer blades. Approach A specialized 48-foot-wide bulldozer blade set at an angle, a 13-foot bulldozer blade with swept-forward end sections, and a 24-foot grading bar are used in conjunction with conventional bulldozers to reduce the cost of recontouring surface mined land. How They Work The angle blade is used to do the initial and intermediate leveling of long spoil banks. It is mounted at an angle on two 410-horsepower crawler tractors in a side-by-side offset configuration, but requires only one operator since both tractors are controlled by a single set of controls. The angle blade usually begins its cycle at one end of the spoil bank where the operator fills the blade and moves forward, continuously cutting and casting the material to the repose slope. At the opposite end of the spall bank, the angle blade turns around and begins cut-ting and casting material to the opposite repose slope. This action continues until adjacent banks meet or the lateral distance from the center line of the spoil bank to the repose slope exceeds approximately 40 to 50 feet. At this distance, the sidecasting angle blade is no longer effective, and conventional bulldozers are used to do the final land shaping.

In 1776 two Franciscan friars, Dominguez and Escalante, started to find a direct route from Santa Fé to Monterey, and in their misguided wanderings northward they reached Timpanogos, now known as Utah lake, where they heard of a much larger body of water to the northwest, of which they were told that it was extremely salt.* They never saw this great lake, because they passed south of it on their way to the Pacific coast. The Dead Sea of North America was discovered in 1835 by James Bridger, a trapper. He and other trappers had ascended the Missouri and had reached the Bear river. A discussion arose as to the course of this river, and a bet was made, to settle which Bridger followed the Bear river to its source, in the Uintah mountains, and from the crest of the watershed he caught sight of the lake, to which he then descended.† He tasted the briny water of the inland sea and wondered if it were an arm of the Pacific Ocean. The lake was first seen by the Mormons on July 24, 1847. A band of them, numbering 145 and led by Brigham Young, had migrated from Missouri in search of a new home in the western wilderness. It is recorded that when Brigham Young stood on the summit of the pass over the Wasatch range and saw the valley of the Jordan outspread before him, he exclaimed: "It is enough. This is the right place". He had seen it in a vision, so he claimed, and foresaw the future glory of the new Zion that was to be planted in that happy

Two outstanding factors characterize most undertakings in the mineral industries: (1) mineral deposits are not equally distributed over the earth but are localized by natural processes, and (2) the mineral industries are largely based upon wasting assets. Neither of these factors is invariably true, for a few mineral materials, such as water, are essentially world-wide and others are replaced periodically by processes not unlike crop production. Indeed, with some, such as the salts in the sea, the supply is cyclic in short or long periods, whereas others, like water, though locally or periodically in short supply, are essentially inexhaustible. But to the extent that most minerals are limited to certain areas and are "permanently" consumed, any industry founded upon them, by implication, demands great care in planning for the most effective extraction-the essence of wise and conservative expenditure. Several less unusual yet also truly fundamental factors in the economics of the mineral industry are those involving (1) the various kinds and properties of mineral materials, which influence their use; (2) their geologic and geographic availability; and (3) the 'techniques unique to their discovery, exploration, and utilization. This chapter is designed primarily as a brief background for later ones and as a summary of the several unusual or at least special factors and of their effect upon the economics of the mineral industry. The social and political and especially the economic aspects of the industry are the main subjects of this volume and are dealt with in extended fashion in subsequent chapters. A major characteristic that distinguishes modern society from its predecessors is the understanding that events are not driven by the whims of the gods, pre-ordained fate or nature, but are controlled to a greater or lesser extent by the actions, (or inactions), of people. The study of risk assessment is the basis for determining risk or the likelihood of an event occurring combined with the consequences of that event if it does occur. This study is indubitably linked to the mathematics of probability and statistics which permits the quantification of risk. As the Industrial Revolution significantly increased the exposure of persons to new types of energy sources, materials, equipment, and means of more rapid transportation of goods and people, quantitative risk assessment became a vital tool in protecting workers and the general public exposed to these new technologies.

The fundamental practices associated with the use of export logistics chains made up of mine, trucking, rail and port operations are being challenged by the advent of third party operators on rail systems and the use of the Internet.Whilst individual mines can improve their processes to drive down their mining costs, they face major challenges in their endeavour to improve the performance of export logistics chains and reduce the significant logistics costs of moving coal from the mine to export ships, via the shared infrastructure of rail systems and ports. There is an increasing realisation that global competition is not only between mines but between coal export regions that are defined by their rail system and ports infrastructure.

The location of trapped miners from their seismic signals will be in- accurate if we assume the P-wave propagation velocity is a constant. P- wave velocities are anything but constant in regions about mines, so some calibration is necessary to obtain more accurate seismic locations. The reference event method compares the time arrivals of signals generated by the miners with those previously recorded from a reference or calibration event in the vicinity of the miners. This method locates the miners' position relative to the calibration source. Hence, the location of the miners is absolute if the reference event position is known absolutely, usually from surveys and mine maps. Advantages resulting from the system, besides greater accuracy, are locations independent of the velocity model assumed, the same solution from the full array and from any subset of four or more seismometers in the array (three if the miners' depth is known), fewer seismometers required, and no complex computers required for analysis. VELA Uniform experience shows that the accuracy of locations of teleseismic explosions and earthquakes is improved by an order of magnitude over locations computed from average travel time curves. Each calibration event is applicable only over a limited range. We recommend a field test of the method at a mine to measure its location accuracy, the range of effectiveness for each calibration event, the number of seismometers needed, and the number of reference events required per mine. From these experiments we could decide whether the reference event method was useful and, if so, what form a practical rescue system would take.

The Missouri-Oklahoma tripoli district was discovered and first mined in 1869 near Seneca, Missouri. Tripoli is a microcrystalline form of high-purity silica that is porous, light- weight, and friable and is derived from a parent siliceous sedimentary rock from which soluble minerals have been leached. Tripoli deposits, 2 to 20 feet thick, occur in cherty limestones of Mississippian age beneath 2 to 10 feet of overburden. They are mined in open pits up to 9 acres in size. The color of tripoli is white, but it also commonly is light pink or red where stained by red iron oxides and clays. Ground tripoli is used commercially as an abrasive or in buffing and polishing compounds and is prized for such physical characteristics as its abrasiveness, porosity, permeability, absorption, and specific gravity.

Longwall coal mining in southern Illinois occurs beneath some of the best agricultural land in the U.S. This region is characterized by highly productive, nearly level, and somewhat poorly drained soils. Subsidence from longwall mining causes changes in surface topography which alters surface and subsurface hydrology. These changes can adversely affect agricultural land by creating wet or ponded areas that can be deleterious to crop production. While most subsided areas show little impact from subsidence, some areas experience total crop failure. Coal companies are required by law to mitigate subsidence damage to cropland. The objective of this study was to test the effectiveness of mitigation in restoring grain yields to their pre-mined levels. The research was conducted on sites selected to represent conventional mitigation techniques on the predominate soils in the area. Corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max.(L.) Merr] yields in 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 from mitigated areas were compared to yields from nearby undisturbed areas. There was no significant (a=0.05) difference in soybean yields averaged over the four years. Average corn yields, however, were significantly lower than reference areas. The impact of subsidence and mitigation is variable and site specific. Results were also related to weather. In wet years, yields in mitigated areas tended to be depressed. This research demonstrated that mitigation of subsidence damage can be successful.

Yield pillars have been used for many years to help reduce stresses near mine openings and improve roof and floor stability. A yield pillar is often defined as a pillar that fails but retains residual strength. Stress transfer occurs through the roof and floor after the peak strength of the pillar is reached. High stresses are transferred from around the openings onto abutments that can be barrier pillars or unmined ground. This mechanism, often referred to as pressure arching, is possible as long as the width of yield pillar mining (panel width) is less than the critical width above which stresses cannot be carried by the overburden. Significant stress transfer also can occur due to small amounts of pillar and/or floor yielding before the peak strength is reached. This is accomplished in a quasi-elastic manner with little or no visible roof and pillar fracturing or floor heave. Long-term stability may be achieved when stresses and mechanical properties are favorable to prefailure yielding. This paper gives practical examples where improvements in stability and resource recovery were achieved with this mechanism. Yielding was assessed by comparing measured and calculated vertical pillar stresses. Results indicated that calculated stresses in the pillars were 25% to 40% higher than the measured stresses, demonstrating significant arching load transfer to the abutments. Prefailure yielding is probably often present but unintentional in both development and production areas. Better recognition and use of this mechanism should lead to design improvements, as mines become deeper.

"Flotation is a complex and highly multivariate process. Using the conventional OFf (one-factor-at-a-time) technique, the optimization of flotation circuits through laboratory or plant testwork is difficult, time-consuming and therefore, expensive and often results in marginal improvements. The optimal operating conditions can be more efficiently estimated when a systematic approach like SDE (Statistical Design of Experiments) is taken.The concentrator of Noranda's Brunswick Mining Division (near Bathurst, New-Brunswick) is well known for the complexity of its differential copper-lead-zinc flotation circuits. One of them, the chalcopyrite-galena separation (or CuSep) circuit, is impacted by more than 20 variables.Statistical Design of Experiments (SDE) techniques were applied at the laboratory scale to improve the performance of Brunswick's CuSep circuit. Screening tests were conducted using Fractional Factorial designs while optimization tests were carried out based on Response Surface Modelling techniques like the Central Composite design. Every series of tests, without exception, revealed new information and process insights which led to significant circuit performance improvements in the plant So far, the metallurgical gain may be as high as four percentage points of copper recovery (in the CuSep circuit). Potential cost savings of expensive consumables (steam, activated carbon) have also been identified but will require additional circuit modifications before being realized.IntroductionIn spite of its apparent simplicity, flotation is a complex three-phase (solid, liquid and gas) separation process. Cyprus Miami Mining Corp. has a history of overcoming adversity through innovation and adaptation to changing conditions. Requirements to remain profitable in the 1990s include a combination of advanced technology, employee involvement and training, attention to customer satisfaction, environmental awareness and quality management. The Miami property is located in the Globe-Miami area of Arizona, 130 km (80 miles) east of Phoenix and 160 km (100 miles) north of Tucson. The complex is located in a high desert environ¬ment at an elevation of 1065 m (3500 ft). The region receives about 480 mm (19 in.) of precipitation annually. History Mineralization at the Miami property was first discovered in the 1880s, which led to underground mining of copper by the 1890s. In 1911, the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. was formed by combining the Inspiration and Live Oak Mines. Full-scale production began in 1915. Block caving methods were used at both mines. Open-pit mining commenced in 1948. Underground mining had ceased by 1954, and all production was obtained from surface operations. Innovation has been the key to Miami's success. Development of sulfide flotation and the ferric cure process for vat leaching were advanced at Miami. In situ leaching of oxide material, remaining after block caving had removed the sulfide ore, was also used.

The Manto Verde copper mine (Atacama Region, Chile) is due to go into production in 1996. It will produce 40 000 tonne/year of copper cathode by heap leaching/SX-EW. Mineralogical studies were undertaken in conjunction with the metallurgical testwork program to characterise the ore and its response to leaching by dilute sulphuric acid. The leachable copper mineralogy is dominated by the oxide copper minerals: brochantite and malachite with minor chrysocolla and atacamite. The gangue minerals include abundant orthoclase, specularite, quartz and chlorite with minor muscovite and trace smectite clay, calcite and limonite. The study showed that complete or partial decomposition of calcite, chlorite, smectite and wad consumed acid and generated solution impurities (Ca2+, Fe2+, Mg2+, A13+, K+, Si4+ and Mn4+2+ ). Although these were manageable at Manto Verde, their uncontrolled build-up could have affected the operation in several ways: the degradation of heap penneability and fonnation of crud in the SX plant from the precipitation of gypsum, goethite, colloidal silica and jarosite; and the entrainment of contaminated pregnant leach solution in the SX organic resulting in the transfer of impurities to the electrolyte and subsequent effects on cathode quality and electrowinning efficiency. In conclusion, process mineralogy played an important role in understanding and managing potential mineral-related problems in the heap leaching and SX-EW recovery of Manto Verde ore.

Introduction Gravity concentration may be defined as that process where particles of mixed sizes, shapes, and specific gravities are separated from each other by the force of gravity or by centrifugal force. The nature of the process is such that size and shape classification are an inherent part of the process in addition to separation on the basis of specific gravity from whence the process got its name. Mother nature has long practiced this form of mineral concentration by concentrating such heavy and relatively indestructible minerals as gold, platinum, cassiterite, ilmenite, zircon, and diamonds in placer or beach sand deposits. Once freed of their host granitic or other rock through natural weathering processes, these minerals are then subjected to stream or wave action producing a natural classification and concentration of the heavy minerals. Gravity concentration dates back to antiquity and was certainly the first ore concentration process used when selective mining and hand sorting would no longer suffice to produce the quality of concentrate desired. Forerunners of the present day sluice box and panning techniques were undoubtedly used by the ancient Egyptians on the upper Nile to separate gold from stream gravel. By the second century BC the extraction of gold from veins in quartz was well detailed by Agatharchides, but there is evidence that gold was brought into Egypt from the south as early as the XI1 Dynasty (~1900 BC).1 Most assuredly gravity concentration devices were used during the later Bronze Age to separate the heavier tin and copper minerals from their lighter gangue minerals. The Athenians used an elementary form of Rowing film concentration at their lead-silver mines at Laurium,2 and elementary jigging using wicker baskets was also probably developed at this time. Agricola's famous treatise De Re Metallica3 demonstrates that by the 16th century gravity concentration technology was well advanced and a large number of devices had been developed. Chinese

The materials that stubilize emulsions of some Southern California crude oils were isolated from the produced crude. These substances were separated into acidic and nonionic fractions by ion exchange chromatography. Each fraction was further broken into groups of homogeneous molecular weight composition by gel permeation chromatography. Both ionic character and molecular weight of the individual fractions are reflected in the properties of the original crude oil emulsion. Specifically, the more acidic and the higher molecular weight fractions appear to be the most effective stabilizers. INTRODUCTION The treatment of oilfield emulsions is a continuing problem for the oil industry. In almost all cases, these are water-in-oil emulsions. Much more is known about the formation and stabilization of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions than of the water-in-oil (W/O) type. To understand W/O emulsions, more information is needed on the materials responsible for their formation and stabilization. This is especially true in the case of oilfield emulsions where the stabilizing materials are complex mixtures of large asphaltene-like molecules. To study the chemical and physical properties of these emulsion stabilizers, it is necessary first to separate them from crude oil. This separation was achieved in the case of two Southern California crude oils. The materials that were isolated appear at first to be little different from an asphaltene mixture. However, if a mixture of distilled water and mineral oil containing about 1 percent of the natural emulsion stabilizers is passed through a colloid mill, the W/O emulsion formed may be stored in the laboratory for many months without any sign of breaking. This could not be done using undifferentiated asphaltenes from the same wells, indicating that there is a real difference between these materials and ordinary asphaltenes. The colloid mill used to generate the emulsion was required because tile natural emulsion stabilizers had very little effect on oil-water interfacial tension. The one characteristic — complexity of composition — that emulsion stabilizers share with asphaltenes makes virtually impossible the exact structure determination of the components of the mixture. For this reason, it was decided to investigate first the influence of molecular weight on the ability of these materials to stabilize emulsions. The emulsion stabilizers were first separated into acidic and neutral fractions according to whether or not the material was retained on a weakly basic ion exchange column. The extraction procedure was not designed to remove basic components from tile oils, and no attempt to isolate such a fraction was made. Following this separation, selected fractions were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography. Gel permeation separates according to molecular size, largely independently of chemical or polar characteristics. A heterogeneous mixture is separated into a number of fractions having much more homogeneous molecular weight distribution. A number average molecular weight of each fraction is therefore close to the true molecular weight of the principal component of that fraction. The fraction weights, expressed as weight percent of the sample, and the number average molecular weight of a representative selection of the fractions, will be referred to in this paper as the molecular weight profile of the original sample. DESCRIPTION OF GEL PERMEATION ANALYSIS The first reported gel permeation analyses were for separating partially hydrolyzed protein molecules in an aqueous system using expanded starch granules. Most of the theoretical work on gel permeation has been done by biochemists.1 This theoretical treatment is still incomplete, but the

JaRvis,* El Oro, Estado de México, México.—The practical problem raised by Mr. Wisser—that is, the determination of the lower limit of ore deposition, below which it is useless to look for ore shoots—is one of the most important in economic geology. He asks: "Can we learn to determine the position of such a line?" For individual districts, yes; but its determination has always been by empirical methods; that is by actually exploring the veins to such depths that the values drop below the economic limits. Usually the signs are plain enough that values have been bottomed without confirmation by the chemist or assayer. Most veins, when approaching their limit, begin to split into branches or stringers; the vein matter itself undergoes a change from "lively looking" rock to one that is dull and unpromising, the quartz, instead of having segregated into clean vein matter, has simply spread itself into the country rock, rendering this more siliceous but no richer—these, together with inclusions of the country rock in the vein, are all positive indications of the limit. Mr. Wisser seems disposed not to accept the law of cause and effect, which he calls "empiricism." He says: "Empiricism embodies an assumption perhaps not evident at first glance. It is this: that like effects spring from like causes and therefore necessarily have a common meaning." There can be no doubt as to the validity of this law, since it is the foundation stone upon which are built all inductive sciences, including economic geology. When demonstrable, proved facts become confused with inferences, as they seem to be generally in the paper under examination, no sound conclusions can be reached. Mr. Wisser has failed to give sufficient data covering the two vein systems which he cites as examples. Presumably they are situated in the Pachuca District of Mexico, but not everybody is familiar with the vein systems there in spite of the fact that it is world famous as a silver producer. Are these two systems separated some distance horizontally from one another and how far? He has given no estimate of the amount and kind of rock that has been eroded from over the present veins. His description of the two systems appears on page 100, beginning: "1. East-west veins," and ends on page 101, "they would lack spaces there in which to deposit." On page 101, with the paragraph beginning "On the other hand," he gives a picture of what he believes takes place in class 2 veins. The sum of this seems to be, according to Mr. Wisser's observations, that, in the east-west veins, class 1, there has been an invasion of an "altering solution," which I judge has been responsible for the formation of extensive "alteration haloes"; that these alteration solutions have followed along pre-existing fractures or fissures; and that after these alteration solutions finished their work the mineralizing solutions deposited the vein matter and metallic values. Mr. Wisser does not specify clearly what the "alteration haloes" consist of; in other words, what change the original rock has suffered, whether oxidizing, carbonating, or sulphidizing. "The Piedmont Manganese Belt extends from Taliferro County, Georgia, 70 miles in a northeasterly direction through Greenwood County, South Carolina, and conforms with the trend of the Piedmont Province. The total area of the belt is reported to be about 1,000 square miles, and the maximum-width is about 24 miles.Manganese has been known to exist in the belt since 1845. M. Tuomey mentioned a deposit in the Edgefield district on Hard Labor Creek in South Carolina in a report on the geology of South Carolina published in 1848.Ore was first mined about the time of the first World War, when the Colley mine, near Lincolnton, Ga., was. Opened. The only operation in the area at present is that of the Abernathy & Kehaya Mining Co., at McCormick, S. C.The geographical position of the belt is from west longitude 82° 57’, north latitude 33° 39' to west longitude 82° 06', north latitude 34° 08'. The towns of Washington and Lincolnton, Ga., and McCormick and Greenwood, S. C., are in or near the belt.An exploratory project of the Bureau of Mines was started on the McCormick, S. C., deposit in April 1944, and trenching, test pitting, and hand-auger drilling-were done on a small scale until early in October 1944. (Fig. 1.) In November 1944 work was begun on a property 12 miles north of McCormick, known as Parsons Mountain, which is leased to M. H. McKnight by the United States Forest Service. From March 15 to March 24, 1945, work was done on the property of Mrs. H. B. Ross, which is known as the Morgan farm.The Abernathy & Kehaya manganese mine contains what is locally known as the Dorn gold mine; mineral rights on the property were owned by M. G. & J. J. Dorn, Inc."

MAGNESIUM alloys containing rare earth metals have received considerable attention during the past several years because of the need for light alloys having high strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Although much of the work reported earlier has dealt with alloys containing Mischmetal, it has been shown in two previous papersl, V hat distinctly different effects are produced by various rare earth metals and rare earth metal mixtures on the properties of magnesium. For example, much higher strengths are obtained in magnesium alloys containing didym-ium (essentially neodymium plus praseodymium) than in alloys made with Mischmetal, which contains all the rare earth metals in the proportions in which they occur naturally in the monazite ore. Mg-rare earth metal alloys are characterized by a relatively coarse grain size, which greatly impairs castability. The addition of zirconium as a second alloying ingredient has been shown8,7 to refine the grain size, which also produces a distinct improvement in the strength properties. Certain Mg-Mischmetal-Zr and Mg-Mischmetal-Zn-Zr alloy compositions which are currently being produced commercially have been discussed in dytail by Nelson and Strieter,8,4 who also present some in- formation on a Mg-low Ce-Mischmetal-Zr alloy, and by Nelson.8 A patent issued to Jessup, Emley, and Fisher9 emphasizes the superiority of Mg-didymium-Zn-Zr alloys over the corresponding alloys made with Mischmetal. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of an extensive investigation concerned with the effect of increasing amounts of zirconium on magnesium sand casting alloys containing several different rare earth metal mixtures in varying amounts. The effect of the addition of zinc to some of these alloys is also being reported. Preparation and Testing of Alloys The alloys studied in this investigation were prepared in small laboratory melts according to the melting procedures described by Nelson1" as the Crucible Method. Electrolytic magnesium having the composition shown in Table I was used as the starting material. The rare earth metal alloying ingredients used in preparing these alloys were essentially of the compositions listed in Table 11. Some of the didymium-containing alloys were prepared using a Mg-didymium hardener. The rare earth metal content of this hardener analyzed 1.2 pct Ce, 10.4 pct Pr, 80.8 pct Nd, and 7.6 pct La. The zirconium was added in one of three forms: 1) as sponge zirconium obtained from the Bureau of Mines; 2) as a fused salt consisting of 50 pct ZrCl, and 50 pct alkali chlorides from which the zirconium is reduced by the magnesium; or 3) as a Mg-Zr hardener.
