The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Lld near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation.The economics of this exercise were considerably enhanced in 1994 by changing the project's principal product from nickel-oxide sinter to refined high-purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site.Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to change completely the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.The changes have meant that the project is no longer limited to selling lower-value oxide sinter to a relatively small number of large stainless steel mills. In the past year sales of the new high purity nickel metal products have expanded to include a broad range of international customers in the special alloy, foundry and chemical industries.

THE Salt Creek oil field in Natrona County, Wyo., is the largest pool that has been found in the Rocky Mountain region and one of the largest in the United States. Many features of its production records are of peculiar interest, because of the unusual slowness with which it has been developed. This paper is published by the permission of the Midwest Refining Co., whose records have been freely drawn upon. Many mem¬bers of the Midwest organization have assisted in the collection of the material, but Messrs. F. E. Wood and L. E. Smith have been particularly helpful. The Salt Creek oil field is situated on a great dome with a closure of about 1500 ft., which rises at the northern end of a long anticline extending north-northwest by south-southeast for fully 25 miles. The productive area includes parts of townships 39 and 40 north and ranges 78 and 79 west of the sixth principal meridian. The Teapot oil field occupies a minor dome at about the center of the same anticline and adjoins the Salt Creek oil field on the southeast. The Teapot Naval Reserve includes the Teapot Dome and about 760 acres of the Salt Creek dome. In this paper, the Salt Creek oil field will be considered as' including all of the dome, except that part which lies within the Teapot Naval Reserve and the area west of the dome where oil is produced from shale crevices.

The controlled amounts of phosphorus, arsenic, sulphur or selenium found in commercial coppers perform a variety of highly useful functions. Indeed, a large segment of modern copper technology is essentially dependent upon the presence of one or more of these elements. Consequently, the literature contains many references to their effects but the scope is broad and has been only partly covered. New data are presented herewith directed toward a better understanding of the basic behavior of these elements in copper, with particular emphasis on the composition range o to 0.05 per cent. These data are a part of a general program of research on the effects of impurities on the properties of oxygen-bearing and oxygen-free copper, other portions of which have been reported previously. Schematically, the behavior of individual elements is determined from measurements of conductivity and softening temperature,'v2 and the binary alloys employed are synthesized from high-purity copper in order to eliminate interference from the effects of extraneous impurities. Alloys of selected composition were first prepared in the oxygen-free form by continuously casting the melts in the form of %-in. diameter rod. Oxygen was added subsequently to portions of the alloys, either by remelting or by diffusion at 8jo°C. from a surface scale. Test wires wcre drawn one B. and S. number per pass, using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at 0.3125, 0.257, 0.204 and 0.162 in., and a final cold reduction of 75 per cent to 0.081 in. Oxygen-bearing slugs made by remelting nere hot-rolled to 4ia in.. drawn to 0.162 in., annealed for 30 min. at 6o0°C. and cold-drawn 75 per cent to 0.081 inch. The alloys containing phosphorus, having been compounded very early in the program, were prepared in the form of 3i6-in. rod, and processed to wire with only the last three intermediate anneals listed above, all of these having been conducted in commercial nitrogen. In addition, the conductivity anneals on these alloys were also performed in the same atmosphere, and the small amount of oxygen present as an impurity in the gas resulted in some loss of accuracy at temperatures of 700' to 8o0°C., as will be shown later. PRODUCTION of magnesium metal in the United States during the past decade has increased from less than 6oo,ooo lb. in 1928 to more than 4,800,000 lb. in 1938.1 The growing industry has stimulated interest in methods of production and in sources of raw material. All of the present domestic production is from brines. However, the availability of large tonnages of magnesite in the state of Washington, together with the possibility of cheap power, have created interest in the utilization of magnesite for the production of magnesium metal as well as for other purposes. Magnesite, the carbonate of magnesium (MgCO3), usually is associated with limestone (CaCO3) and dolomite (MgCO3CaCO3). It occurs in crystalline and microcrystalline (sometimes termed amorphous) forms.2 The more common crystalline mineral is found in various shades of white, gray, yellow and brown, the colors being due to impurities, chiefly iron. Magnesite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.1. It forms rhombohedral crystals in the hexagonal system, having a vitreous, pearly luster. The quarries and mines of the Northwest Magnesite Co. near Chewelah, Wash., are large producers of magnesite for refractories. The deposits are extensive, some veins being hundreds of feet wide. The boundaries of the veins are indefinite, and the magnesite is interfingered with dolomite. Calcite, talc, serpentine, quartz and shale are disseminated through the deposits. The quality of the ore cannot be determined by appearance or by simple tests; chemical analysis is required. These features make it difficult to determine the boundaries or total quantity of workable ore.3 Only the higher-grade ores are mined, and a considerable proportion of the magnesite content is discarded by hand-sorting and log-washing methods. After calcining, the sorted product meets the specifications for usual refractory material, as it contains approximately 81 per cent MgO, 7 per cent Si02, 6 per cent CaO and 6 per cent Fe203 + A1203. A sample of the reject material had the following analysis after calcining: 65.4 per cent MgO, 6.3 CaO, 21.1 Si02 and 6.5 R203. The percentage reported as R203 includes compounds whose chlorides are acid-soluble but give precipitates in ammoniacal solution that are ignited and weighed. The more common constituents are Fe203, A1203 and Ti02. The sorted magnesite product is not the best grade, even for refractory purposes, and leaves much to be desired for a reduction process. The rejected material contains a large proportion of magnesite. It is apparent that an effective concentration method would yield a higher recovery and a better product. "It is generally felt that flow-through shares face a bleak future under the set of tax rules proposed in the federal government's tax reform white paper. Industry and government circles are beginning to give thought to alternatives to flow through as a mechanism for facilitating equity financing in the exploration industry. Despite suggestions that grants and tax credits may someday be on the table, industry is sticking to its position that there is no substitute for flow-through. Alternatives toFlow-throughProposals in the federal government's tax reform white paper have cast significant doubt on the ability of the mining industry to raise risk capital after 1989by way of flow-through shares. There is serious concern that introduction of the ""cumulative net investment loss"" (CNIL) rules, the phase-out of the mining explorati0! 1 depletion allowance (MEDA), and the Increased capital gains inclusion (750/0 versus 50%, at present) will make the economics of flow-through so unattractive after 1989 that these shares will hold little appeal to most investors. The question might be raised, then, as to what alternatives exist by way of tax or other government assistance that could help the exploration sector.The purpose of this paper is to survey the types of government incentives that could be of some value to explorationists and to the mining industry in general. For the past several years, flow-through has been in the spotlight insofar as incentives to the exploration industry are concerned. Other potentially useful and attractive incentives have been partially hidden in the shadow of flow-through. These incentives, in certain circumstances, can be of considerable benefit, and should not be ignored."

"The development of mobile phone technology has increased the replacement of outdated equipments for more modern models, transforming disposal of such devices into a serious environmental problem. Recycling appears as an attractive alternative to minimize the environmental impact of disposing such large quantities. Recycling can be accomplished by treating the printed circuit boards of used mobile phones by using the same techniques used in ore treatments with hammer mill; magnetic separation, electrostatic separation and grain size range. Before performing the recycling process a PCB characterization was performed to identify the fraction with the higher metals concentration/content. This study demonstrated that the electrostatic separation was not the best metals concentration of PCB aiming the recycling, while the non-magnetic residue had presented a more significant metal concentration. Furthermore, after the magnetic separation was possible to separate the following metals: iron and nickel.IntroductionPortable electronic devices have gained increasing acceptance over the last decades. Mobile phones sales in Brazil, for instance, have reached 104 million in 2007, and 128 million in 2008. It is estimated that, around the world, 100 million mobiles are thrown away every year, either because of loss of functionality or because newer models are launched in the market [1,2, 3]. Printed circuit boards in mobile phones are made of many materials, with approximately 83% in weight being metals and fiber-glass, and the balance being plastics pl. Several metals can be recovered from the electronics waste, such as copper, tin, iron, lead, nickel, titanium, aluminium as well as some precious metals such as gold, silver and palladium [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. Concurrent with the increasing world demand for copper, there average metal content in ores has been decreasing. Economically interesting copper mines used to have 4% metal content, whereas presently, such content is around 1%, i.e., for every 1 ton of ore extracted, only 10 kg are copper [9, 10]. Approximately 33% of printed circuit boards (PCBs) composition is copper, that is, for every 1 ton of PCBs waste, 330 kg are copper [1]. Research in recycling PCB waste focuses on mechanical, electrometallurgy, pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes [3, 8]. Collecting and recycling obsoletes electro-electronic equipments is very important these days, in order to, not just preserve the non renewable natural resources but also to keep the environment and the population safe from the pollution caused by the toxic materials and heavy metals present in this kind of waste."

Generalizations therefore are made whenever possible and not always is the source of the information meticulously cited. The United Nations regularly publishes trade data on mineral commodities. E. J. Gealy, and C. L Kimbell, of the U S Bureau of Mines (USBM), work with these data and estimate that they cover approximately 78% of total mineral commodities traded. THE NATURE AND SCOPE OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE The two and a half decades since World War II have witnessed an unprecedented growth international commerce The end of the war found the world economy seriously crippled. Many countries had suffered severe war damage; international trade was disrupted and nations had to resort to exchange controls and bilateral trading arrangements. The postwar recovery, however, was remarkably rapid Within two decades, world Income more than doubled, and world trade which was less than $60 billion in 1948 exceeded $200 billion in 1968, 8 and reached $278 billion in 1970.18 The growing world trade contributed to world prosperity which in turn fostered growth of trade. Detection of plastic explosives is an important task in the security measures against criminal misuses of this type of explosive. Particles and vapour detectors are basic instruments in this detection. Colour reactions and dogs are also used. Marking system in accordance with requirements of Montreal Convention was developed and applied in full scale production of plastic explosives including Semtex since 199 1. The influence of marking on technology, performance and other properties of plastic explosives is discussed. 2,3 dimethyl 2,3 dinitrobutan is the most popular marking agent which is broadly used. The detectability of this compound is not optimum by some detectors. The substantial effort has been given to development of plastic explosives with controlled shelflife. Some results of this work are presented. Technical and economic aspects of identification marking are discussed.

In 1953, Akita Plant, having a capacity of 560 tons per month, was built at Akita city by Mitsubishi Metal Mining Co., Ltd. for the purpose of treatment of the Ikuno and Akenobe Mines's zinc concentrates. Akita city, in whose neighborhood the black ore has been discovered, is located about 500 Km north of Tokyo and faced with the Japan Sea. This plant has been continuously expanded to have the capacity of 7,500 tons per month by the end of 1969. Efforts have been made to mechanize installations and to achieve continuous process. One of the characteristics of Akita Plant is the recent establishment of the residue treatment process. Many processes had been investigated, and finally commercial sulphate roasting of the residue has been carried out since 1965. At Akita Plant, special high grade electrolytic zinc, zinc alloy for die-casting (MAK brand), cadmium, cement copper and sulphur dioxide gas are produced. Sulphur dioxide gas is sent to the next door fertilizer plant to make acid. Table 1 shows production and the average assay of the electrolytic zinc and cadmium in 1969. Mr. Gillie and Mr. Harris have given us a wealth of information and food for thought on the vital subject of information and food fo rthought on the vital subject of reducing costs and mention considerable saving in some of the larger items. There are a number of points on which I would like further information, but I will confine my remarks to a relatively small saving which is of particular interest in view of another paper to be presented this afternoon.Mention is made of a 50 per cent reduction in the amount of zinc used in the precipitation of gold slime from the pregnant solution. It is scarcely necessary to point out the important functions of water in the mining operations of man, especially in the State of California, where sluicing and hydraulic mining have been practiced on such a grand scale as to arouse the opposition of the agricultural interests. But the role which water and ice have played in mining or excavating on their own account is not so apparent. The alluvions of existing rivers, and the higher gravel-beds left by ancient streams, are doubtless the result of running water; but how far these gravelly materials owe their origin primarily as rocky debris and fragments of veins to glacial erosion, it is difficult .to determine. Yet we see on every side in our higher mountains unmistakable evidences of the cutting, crushing and eroding effects of glacial ice. We note that mountain-summits have been reduced in height and shaped into rounded and dome-like summits. We know that the general contour of the hills of New England, of the Highlands of the Hudson, and of the mountains of northern New Jersey, is due to glacial carving. The same is true of the Laurentian hills of Canada and of the mountains of all northern regions. And we recognize in the vast deposits of so-called " drift," which are spread out over the surface of the northern States, the chips and debris from the glacial workshops. Thus we cannot avoid the conclusion that there was an enormous amount of cutting and excavating in glacial times, and that vast quantities of veinmaterial and of ores and metals must have been liberated by ice-action.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Part of the contact of the 4b orebody with the enclosing Murray granite is characterised by the presence of recrystallised and biotitic Sudbury Breccia; in places the contact is faulted and sheared. In other areas of the contact partly silicified granite contains disseminated chalcopyrite and quartz-chalcopyrite veins with other minor minerals. Both ore and veins contain platinum group minerals (PGM); predominant PGM are michenerite, kotulskite, merenskyite and sperrylite with Au, galena and Bi-tellurides. At some silicified-granite contacts Mn-rich garnets, some containing inclusions of PGM and quartz, are associated with biotite + epidote + stilpnomelane + quartz. PGM and Au also occur within Cl-rich biotite and ferropyrosmalite in massive sulphide and in siliceous ore. Quartz, chalcopyrite and feldspar in the contact rocks and in veins contain abundant, highly saline fluid inclusions. Studies showed that the fluids were trapped at intermediate temperatures. The 4b orebody is surrounded by a sheath of brecciated granite but is close to the Contact Sublayer. During and after emplacement of sulphide magma, saline formational fluid that was resident in the breccia interacted with hot massive sulphides in and near the Sublayer and remobilised Cu, Au and PGE. This fluid reacted with cooler rocks and ore in footwall fractures, enriching the 4b protore and producing the adjacent Cu- and PGE-enriched quartz veins. Exploration for Cu and PGE enrichment in footwall rocks of the Sudbury South Range is warranted not only in zones of magmatic ore in the Contact Sublayer but also in fractures and permeable units within Sudbury Breccia

The important factors in any study of the screening of sand with a gravel envelope, as applied to use in oil wells, are: (I) sand size and shape, (z) gravel size and shape, (3) ratio of gravel size to sand size, (4) flow velocity, (5) viscosity of the fluid. Perhaps the first extensive investigation of the function of gravel in screening sand was performed by Coberly and Wagner,' from which the following conclusion was drawn: "The diameter of the largest grains in a single classified sand suitable for gravel packing is approximately 13 times the grain size at the ten-percentile analysis of the formation sample." ?;his applies to sands classified by Tyler screens and is for gravel grains of the maximum size that could be used to form a stable bridge. Field practice has shown that the screening effect of a given gravel for a given sand apparently varies with the flow velocity." Also, it has been assumed by some operators that the thickness of the walls of the gravel envelope surrounding the well has little effect upon the screening process. It is thought by others that a narrow envelope of gravel might form an ineffective screen. Thus the purposes of this work are: 1. To investigate the effect of gravel-sand size ratio upon screening action under the condition of varying flow velocities. 2. To investigate the effect upon screening action of varying the thickness of the gravel screen. 3. To investigate sand migration in the gravel screen and the effect of flow velocity and gravel size upon sand migration. Description of Apparatus In an attempt to reproduce field conditions for the purposes of this investigation, a flow tube was constructed, according to the manner of Urenj3 to represent a radial drainage segment of an oil sand. To arrive at the dimensions of the flow tube, a radial drainage segment of rectangular cross section was assumed to define an area of z sq. in. on the face of a well 6 in. in diameter. From this the dimensions of the segment were calculated out to a distance of 5 ft. from the face of the well. By computing cross-sectional areas at a number of sections along the rectangular segment and transforming these areas into the circular form, a drainage cone was obtained having everywhere the same cross-sectional area as the drainage element of rectangular cross section. To construct the apparatus, two sections of pipe of 7%-in. inside diameter, one 13 in. and the other 4 ft. long, were joined by a bolted flange. A mandrel having the dimensions of the drainage cone was centered in the pipe and a neat cement mixture was cast around it. A protective gasket was placed between the two sections of pipe so that the cement body could be separated at that point. When the mandrel was withdrawn a drainage cone was obtained (Fig. I).

The behaviour of grouted cable bolts used for rock reinforcement as a means of ground control in hard rock mining is investigated. The study utilizes an analytical model which is based on the variational principle to calculate the shear bond stress distribution along the embedded length of cable bolt. In this paper, a comprehensive parametric study which covers both geometric and mechanical design parameters involved is presented. Special emphasis is placed on studying the characteristics of the grout model represented by Winkler springs. This involved varying the maximum shear strength of the grout, its residual strength and the slip occurring between the cable and the borehole wall.
