The work described here is an extension of current theory applied to obtaining the power dissipated at the wavefront of a transverse disturbance traveling along a mine hoisting cable. A previously derived empirical relation is adapted to the present problem, and is solved by use of a Lagrange-type reference frame moving with the wavefront. As a result of tie limitations inherent in the original relation, only a lower-bound for the domain of predicted power losses is defined. A qualitative assessment of conditions leading to the undesirable effects of internal frictional losses at the wavefronts are discussed in terms of the operating environment found on typical mining installations

The paper presents two methods for periodical identification of the dependence between haulage speed and loading torque of the shearer for periodical corrections of control algorithms. These algorithms are useful for working with small microprocessor-based systems. The paper is concluded with results of identification using above methodsand with discussion about their merits and demerits. The longwall mining system is the basic exploita-tion system used in coal mining in Poland. The quantity of coal produced by this system, using a shearer loader as a cutter-loader machine is esti-mated at 170 million tones per year. For this rea-son scientific research concerning these machines is of major practical significance.

A FORMER paper1 described in detail various methods of calculating coal analyses to obtain the composition and calorific value of the pure coal substance-that is, of the coal free from its mineral matter. The paper included a table showing calorific values of pure coal, as calculated from float-and-sink portions, by means of the Parr formula for "unit coal" and by the customary moisture-free and ash-free formula. A modification of the Parr formula was proposed, based on the assumption that one-half the sulfur present in coal occurs as pyritic sulfur and one-half as organic sulfur. In the published discussion of the paper Cady gave a table of results on a large number of Illinois coals as obtained by the Parr formula and the proposed modification thereof. The results obtained by Cady indicate that the Parr formula applies better to Illinois coals than does the modified formula proposed by Fieldner and Selvig. The present paper gives results obtained by applying the modified Parr formula to the analyses of the float-and-sink portions of the coals shown in the former paper, and results obtained by applying the Parr formula, the modified Parr formula, and the simple moisture-free and ash-free formula to various coals of the United States ranging in sulfur content from less than 1 per cent to more than 4 per cent sulfur. A graphic method of estimating the calorific value of pure coal and determin-ing the relation of the coal ash to the mineral matter of coal, as proposed by Stansfield and Sutherland,2 was applied to a number of coals, and the results are given herein.

The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action." As this situation slowly evolved, both the countries imposing the countertrade obligation and the exporters assuming the obligation began to realize that something

The displacement equations of Buckley and Lever-ett' have been successfully applied to the prediction of oil recovery in frontal drives for a number of years. Commonly, the capillary pressure term is omitted from Leverett's fractional flow formula. The resulting satura-tion-vs-distance curves become multi-valued, however. Buckley and Leverett, recognizing that the neglect of capillarity was most likely the cause, proposed that this part of the solution he ignored. An ingenious method of propagating a discontinuity in place of the multi-valued portlon of the curve was devised by Cardwell using "non-capillary displacement theory". However, it would seem that a completc description of the displacement pracess would require the inclusion of capillary forces. Three publications on displacement theory have appeared in which capillary pressure was included. Ter-williger. et al', calculated saturation profiles which matched those which they observed when gas displaced water vertically downward. Based on their study, Jones-Parra and Calhoun5 roposed a method of computing saturation distributions sufficiently removed in time from the initial conditions so that all saturations in the flood front region were assumed to move with the same velocity. This latter assumption corresponds to the tangent construction on the flowing fraction-vs-satura-tion curve proposed by Welge." A numerical solution to the problem of water displacing oil from a water-wet porous medium was recently presented by Blair, ef at'. The initial conditions included a uniform saturation slightly above interstitial water saturation. that is, the permeability to water ahead of the front was not zero. This appeared to result in a region of slowly rising water saturation ahead of the front, at least for the particular set of relative permeability and capillary pressure data used to illustrate the computation. The authors also postulated an "end-effect" at the outflow face of the system, whereby no water could pass out of the system until the water saturation had built up to a high value. The saturation profiles computed under these assumptions show water accumulating at the downstream end of the system while the flood front proper is still traveling toward the outlet. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a numerical solution to the one-dimensional water-flooding equation in which no outlet end-effect is considered and where there is no flow of water ahead of the flood front. It should be noted that the contemporary paper of Fayers and Sheldon8 deals with the problem under discussion. Innovation in the tilemaking ceramic industry is stressing properties like powder flowability, ability to toughen green tiles, so turning technological requirements of ball clays ever stricter in terms of plasticity, dispersion in water, rheological behavior, workability in the green state, refractoriness and firing colour. Technological performance of ball clays was improved by taking as benchmark the highest quality raw materials on the market. The mineralogy, plasticity, methylene blue index and ceramic response of the Patagonian ball clays are analogous to those of European clays, but improvement is needed to approach the highest quality materials. On this basis, the Frente A, Super, Puma, and Lote 8 deposits were selected and their characteristics enhanced by additions of highly plastic and white-firing corrective clays targeted on the benchmark. Porcelain stoneware formulations, containing improved ball clay mixes, were experimented at both laboratory and industrial scale. The improved ball clays behave like the best raw materials currently used, although modest changes occur in the mechanical properties, water absorption and whiteness of the fired products.

A method is presented for evaluating the effect of gravity drive upon the reservoir performance of a high relief pool. Conventional forms of reservoir analysis do not consider the alterations in the basic material balance data caused by gravity segregation of reservoir fluids. A procedure is outlined for structurally weighting physical and chemical data for use in the material balance equation. It is demonstrated how actual pool performance data can be utilized to evaluate the future reservoir performance of a gravity drive pool. INTRODUCTION Conventional reservoir engineering. procedure is inadequate for the analysis of an oil pool which has considerable structural relief, steep dips, and good permeability development. In, pools of this type, gravity drainage has an important part in the movement of oil to the wells and the effects of gravity on the overall pool performance should be included in any analysis of reservoir behavior. Many engineers have the opinion that the force of gravity in the movement of oil is not important until the later life of a pool.' Probably the basis for this belief is that gravitational effects may not be readily discernible until a pool is nearing depletion. This would be especially true for pools not having a high degree of structural relief and permeability development. Actually the effects of gravitational forces are at a maximum when the pool pressure is high, for during this period the hydrostatic head of the oil column is at a maximum and the viscosity of the oil is at a minimum. Oil recoveries from pools having favorable gravity drive characteristics may equal or even exceed recoveries which might be expected from water displacement. Field evidence indicates that in some reservoirs gravity drive has resulted in recoveries greater than that which could have been expected from gas expansion or water drive.'.3 Unfortunately, the possible effects of gravity drive on pool performance have been underestimated and other reasons have been sought to explain the high recoveries obtained. There are unquestionably many reservoirs to which the principles of gravity drainage can be effectively applied. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate one method whereby gravity drive is included in the reservoir analysis of an oil pool. A hypothetical pool, typical of many California reservoirs, is used as an example. As used in this paper, "gravity drive" is defined as the overall effect of gravitational influences on the recovery of petroleum from the reservoir; "gravitational segregation" as the gravity separation of oil and gas within the reservoir; and "gravity drainage" as the downward movement of oil as caused by the force of gravity. SAND VOLUME DATA Fig. 1 presents a structural contour map of the pool under study. Maximum closure is 1950 feet with dips on the south flank approaching 45". The original gas-oil interface was set at -5200 feet. Average thickness of the producing sand was 200 feet. For use in subsequent calculations ill this paper, the pool was subdivided into 100-foot vertical increments and the sand-volume content of each increment was obtained. If the gross sand thickness is small, under 100 feet, the sand-volume content can be obtained by superimposing an isopachous map upon a structural contour map and planimetering the average thickness of each 100-foot increment. For sand thicknesses over 100 feet, one approacli would be to construct a sufficient number of cross-sections of the pool from which the weighted sand-volume of each 100-foot increment could be obtained. Variations in the sand body with depth, as determined by core data, can also be included in the above process. Table I presents a summary of sand-volume calculations, core data, and the original distribution of reservoir hydrocarbons in the pool. Fig. 2 illustrates the structural distribution of the sand-volume content. A total of 171,398 acre-feet is contained within the productive limits of the pool. Assuming an average porosity of 25% and an interstitial water content of 20%, the original hydrocarbon content was computed to be 227,075,000 barrels. DEPTH-PRESSURE DATA The determination of the initial vertical pressure arrangement in the pool is necessary for PVT and material balance calculations. Whenever sufficient data are available, a plot of pressure versus subsea depth of measurement should be made. From this plot a representative fluid pressure gradient can be established. Lacking sufficient initial pressure data, an initial pressure gradient may he estimated or calculated from avail-

The ores treated at the concentrating plant of the Mahoning Mining Co. at Rosiclare, Ill., come largely from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately inter-grown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four coyentrates: (I) lead, (2) zinc, (3) acid-grade fluorspar and (4) metallurgical-grade Auorspar.2-3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 19214 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Alines5 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. AT THE dinner at the Cosmos Club in Washington, tendered to Herbert Hoover on Jan. 5, on the occasion of his retirement from the presidency of the Federated American Engineering Societies, he made an informal speech in which he pointed out not only the unique position which the engineer now occu-pies by virtue of the new Federated Societies but also the opportunity that is thus presented for national service. In this connection and in pointing out some of the reasons for the present economic maladjust-ment, Mr. Hoover said in part: This body has entered upon a path of public serv-ice that is unique in the whole United States. The engineer has devoted himself all these years to the upbuilding of the material values of the United States. He has done that effectively more effectively than-has been accomplished in any other of the great countries of the world. The birth of this society marks the evolution of the engineer into an interest in public affairs. With his intelligence, his experience and training and the unique knowledge that he possesses not only of the material but the intangible values among our people, he is now organized so that his united voice may become heard outside of his profession. We have probably 175,000 engineers in our country, representing an intellectual possibility for service possessed by no other group. It is therefore an augury of real social development when the engineers of the United States join together for purposes of public service.

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY This short paper deals with the history of the Nickel Plate Mine from 1898 to 1987, with the major focus on the time period 1984 to 1987. Operations from 1898 to 1955 are reviewed in a cursory manner with the emphasis on some interesting points in the early 20th century. A review of the major exploration work carried out in 1984 to 1987 is presented and the process of moving the project through feasibility, government permitting and construction is described. The Hedley gold camp is situated approximately 40 kilometres east-southeast of Princeton, in southern British Columbia. The area has had a long history of gold mining and between 1902 and 1955 approximately 1.5 million ounces of gold were won from several mineralized skarn orebodies. Most production came from the Nickel Plate and Hedley Mascot mines. AN EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY SUMMARY The Nickel Plate is one of the oldest mines in the province. The mine had operated from 1904 to 1930 and, after a period of shutdown, from 1934 to 1955. The mine was revived in 1967 for exploration and. will resume production during the first half of 1987. In the first period the Yale Mining Company and Daly Reduction Company operated for six years and Hedley Gold Mining Company for twenty-one. In the second period the mine was operated by the Kelowna Exploration Company Limited and Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited for twenty-one years. In the present period the mine has been revived by Mascot Gold Mines Limited.

"Mineral exploration and geometallurgy require a large number of samples for physical, chemical and mineralogical assays. The combination of all these data and their spatial distribution define the ore variability. This is important in exploration programs and crucial in feasibility studies as well as at the production operation level. Ore mineralogical composition and its associations, characterizing the geological formation and mineralization, are the main keys to define the ore domains and its variability, which can be quickly assessed by cluster analysis and by modern automated mineralogy tools. One hundred and ten copper ore samples from Sossego mine, in Brazil were compared and classified by X-ray diffraction cluster analysis based on the position and the intensity of the diffracted peaks. Initially four ore types were categorized based on content of major minerals: quartz, feldspar, amphibole, iron oxides, mica and chlorite. Results showed a strong correlation between the grouping and the samples location in Sequeirinho and Sossego orebodies, with a straight link to types/intensities of hydrothermal alteration prevailing in each body, which reflects the mineralogical composition and thus the X-ray patterns. Samples from four recognized ore types were submitted to detailed automated mineralogical studies by electron beam image analysis and differ strongly from each other regarding their chemical and mineralogical compositions and relevant parameters for mineral processing. Chalcopyrite is essentially the only valuable mineral, occurring both as submillimetric grains included in other minerals and as larger crystals. Except for pyrite, other sulfide minerals occur as traces. Chalcopyrite liberation curves indicate that samples from Sossego have higher liberation degree than those from Sequeirinho. The proposed method proved to be very efficient and accurate to classify a large number of samples within a short time frame, allowing the distinction of the ore types regarding their mineralogical composition as well as the mineral processing parameters."

There were no radical changes in the petroleum situation in the Russian Soviet Union during the 1926 to 1927 operating year. The developments of the previous year were continued, but the major undertakings were far from being completed. The pipe lines from Baku to Batum and from Grozny to Touapse, and the large refineries on the Black Sea are delayed in their completion by the insufficient authorizations; until their completion the changes in the general situation will be necessarily of a halfway nature. The marketing situation was subject to much controversy during the past year and, though certain statements are quite true, the bulk of the criticism against the petroleum industry hardly deserves mention. The home market in Russia is steadily growing, with the per capita kerosene consumption already exceeding the prewar figure and fuel oil consumption obviously gaining. The foreign trade is making rapid and well-grounded success, but continues to suffer from low world quotations. There is no apparent sacrifice of home consumers in favor of export trade. The production of all Russian fields increased by 13,750,000 bbl. as compared with the 1925 to 1926 operating year, and next year's program anticipates a further increase of 9,720,000 bbl. (Table 1). The increased and improved refining facilities will make the real gain in production in the next year even larger than these figures indicate.

The gold, silver, copper alloys have been the subject of several fairly complete investigations by Janecke, Sterner-Rainer&apos; and others, and indeed it would seem as if almost too much labor had been expended on them when one thinks of the numerous other ternary alloys calling for more light; however, the combinations of the three metals are actually so widely used in jewelry that they merit perhaps the work done on them. There are a few properties of importance and interest not treated by the authors mentioned which the writer investigated some little time ago, and therefore he has ventured to put on record the results of some of his tests made at that time. He has chosen, as being the two series of most importance to the jeweler, only the 14 and 18-kt. golds, so the subjcct is by no means so inclusive as that previously treated. As statecl, this paper is merely a record of tests made in a practical manner on two itucbful series of alloys, and is not at all a critical study of their properties. 14-Karat Alloys These alloys are important because they arc the most generally II,<(S(I in 14-kt, jewelry; by changing thc proportions of silvcbr and copper Iliero are obtained all shades of color from the green of the alloy contiainng gold and silver but no copper, to the red of the alloy containing gold ;,, copper but no silver. This may be a most unnecessary paper—from what does crude oil come and how was it formed. Many people, inside and outside of the petroleum industry, believe that we have actually enough oil, and that we can easily produce very important products from this extremely valuable raw material. The writer believes, however, that the answer to this question concerning the parent material and the formation of oil is of broader interest, because it may be that from the answer to these problems it would be possible to get answers to other important industrial questions. Therefore, a study in this line seems to be justified, and the writer will submit some of the results which he has collected during more than ten years with many very capable collaborators, to whom his thanks may be expressed on this occasion. Older Theories There is no doubt that plants were the parent material of coals, but opinion is divided as to the parent material of crude oil and asphalts. One group of specialists believed that they were formed from dead fish. The hydrocarbons of crude oil were formed by the splitting off of CO² from fatty acids formed by the saponification of the fat (glycerides) of fish. Enormous quantities of crude oil are present in many places on the earth, very often in several nonconnected horizons at the same location. This could hardly be explained by the so-called "catastrophe theory," which states that fish died through the entrance of salt water into fresh water, and vice versa. Furthermore, this theory cannot explain the presence of aromatic hydrocarbons, which can be found in nearly all oils, especially in the oil of the Netherlands Indies, which has more than 50 per cent of aromatics. Geological and chemical observations both lead to the belief that the temperature of formation of asphalt, crude oils and coals, perhaps with a few exceptions, did not exceed 200° C. Chlorophyll and haemin derivatives, which decompose above 200° C., have been found in all these materials by Treibs and others. High-extraction mining of coal and other stratified minerals has a predictable effect on the surface and subsurface. Impacts on ground waters in overlying strata and on surface waters, that are associated with overlying sequential zones of collapse, fracturing, aquiclude, constrained strata, and surface disturbances can be anticipated. Since first quantified around 1979 in Bureau of Mines sponsored contract research work and others (and often adopted by state regulators), with zone extents based upon multiples of mined seam height of 24 to over 60 for the fractured zone, much new data have become available. In examining the sources of data and the methods and intents of the researchers of over 65 case histories, it became apparent that the strata behaviors were being confused with overlapping vertical extents reported for the fractured zones and aquiclude zones depending on whether the researcher was interested in water intrusion into the mine or in water loss from surface or ground waters. These more recent data, and critical examination of existing data, have led to the realization that the former "Aquiclude Zone" defined for its ability to prevent or minimize the intrusion of ground or surface waters into mines has another important character in increasing storage of surface and shallow ground waters in response to mining with no permanent loss of waters. This zone is here named the "Dilated Zone." The existence of the dilated zone explains the ratios of up to 60 times the mined thickness. Surface and ground waters can drain into this zone, but seldom into the mine, and can eventually be recovered through closing of dilations by mine subsidence progression away from the area, or filling of the additional void space created, or both. A revised model has been developed which accommodates the available data, by modifying the zones as follows: ? collapse and disaggregation extending 6 to 10 times the mined thickness above the panel ? continuous fracturing extending approximately 24 times the mined thickness above the panel, allowing temporary drainage of intersected surface and ground waters ? development of a zone of dilated, increased storativity, and leaky strata with little enhanced vertical permeability from 24 to 60 times the mined thickness above the panel above the continuous fracturing zone, and below the constrained or surface effects zones, whose thickness or existence is dictated by the zones above and below ? maintenance of a constrained but leaky zone above the dilated zone and below the surface effects zone, whose thickness or existence is dictated by the zones above and below ? limited surface fracturing in areas of extension extending up to 50 ft or so beneath the ground surface

Steelmaking slag contains nutrition such as Si, P and Fe for acceleration of phytoplankton growth. Phytoplankton can fixate carbon dioxide more than any other species on earth. Hence, suppression of CO2 can be achieved by applying the potential of steelmaking slag as the nutrition for their propagation. When it is considered to supply nutrition from steelmaking slag to seawater, we must avoid dissolution of hazardous elements or change of pH of seawater by steelmaking slag addition into seawater. The protection against dissolution of fluorine into artificial seawater has been studied based on dissolution behavior of steelmaking slag and synthesized substances into artificial seawater in the present work. The dissolution mechanism of fluorine from steelmaking slag and buffering action of pH change are discussed by using stability diagram in seawater.
