SILICON, germanium, and tin occur with both the white tine-type structure and the diamond cubic structure. In the latter form these elements are semiconductors; in the former they are metallic. The metallic form of germanium and silicon is obtained only under high pressure.' The haulage system employed to convey coal from the face to the outside, dates back to 300 B. C., when slaves carried the mineral from the face to the consumer. The British discovered coal on their island about 800 A. D. and they were the first people to make practical use of coal and make coal mining a successful operation. The Britons carried cargoes of coal in their trading expeditions long before Columbus discovered America. The early history of mine haulage in the British mines relates to women with baskets, a practice still in use in Korean mines. Coal was discovered in America in 1679. The first mine worked in the United States was opened at Richmond, Va., in 1770. The haulage inside consisted of a crude sled loaded with, sacked coal ready for the market and drawn by a mule. The tipple consisted of the very simple operation of loading the sacked coal to the back of a lame mule, which represented the transportation system between mine and boat. The capacity of the boat was one ton and this large production of coal was intrusted to a small boy, who delivered to any place in town his bushel basket filled' with winter fuel. One daring coal operator shipped fifteen tons of coal by boat to Philadelphia and the man in charge had to seek employment to pay his board while finding customers for his fuel. A production of five tons per day would hardly attract attention to any system of haulage, add three ciphers and the importance of mine haulage is made very plain to the management. I will consider a production between 3000 and 5000 tons in eight hours and endeavor to bring out the essential features necessary to make the haulage system a regulated precise factor. There are two phases to mine haulage, the mule trip from the room to the motor or gathering party and the main haul to the outside. The motive power, whether done by mule, wire-rope or electric motor cannot be effective if left to the power alone. Conditions must offer no obstacle and it is the removal of obstacles that make the haulage system. This paper will consider a flat seam with the usual jump ups and downs or natural obstacles to be met and mastered by the successful tail-rope or electric system. The pit car is no longer a screening system scattering the fine coal from the room to the outside, adding to the costs by giving employment to road cleaners and polluting the ventilating system with a fog of coal dust. The effects of hydrostatic pressure up to 400 ksi at 25" to 300°C on the mechanical properties of three forms of commercial beryllium (hot-pressed block, extruded rod and cross-rolled sheet) were investigated. Three effects of pressure were studied: mechanical beharior under pressure, the effect of pressure-cycling, and the effect of tensile prestraining under hydrostatic pressure on the subsequent tensile properties at atmospheric pressure. For all three materials the ductility increased with pressure whereas the flow stress did not appear to be significantly influenced by pressure. An increase in the subsequent atmospheric pressure yield strength generally occurred as a result of pressure-cycling or prestraining under pressure, whereas either no change or a decrease in ductility occurred. The only exception to this was sheet material, which exhibited some improvement in ductility following a pressure-cycle treatment of 304 ksi pressure. The effects of pressure-cycling and prestraining were relatively independent of the temperature at which they were conducted. Stabilized cracks of the (0001) type were found in hot-pressed specimens and {1120) type in extruded and sheet specimens following straining under pressure. Also, pyramidal slip with a vector out of the basal plane, presumably c + a, was identified by electron transmission microscopy for extruded rod and for sheet strained under pressure. Small loops similar to those previously reported were found after straining at pressures of the order of 300 ksi. THE use of beryllium in structures is limited because of its poor ductility under certain conditions. Therefore, one objective of the present research was to determine if the ductility of beryllium at atmospheric pressure could be improved by prior pressure-cycling or prestraining under hydrostatic pressure. Another objective was to study the mechanisms associated with the plastic flow and fracture of the polycrystalline form of this metal with pressure as an additional variable. Since the early work of Bridgman,1 it has been recognized that many materials which are brittle at atmospheric pressure exhibit appreciable ductility when strained under high hydrostatic pressure. This effect has been reported for beryllium by Stack and Bob-rowsky2 and by Carpentier et al.3 and has been attributed to the operation of pyramidal slip systems with slip vectors inclined to the basal plane while cleavage or fracture is suppressed.4 That such slip may occur simply by the application of pressure alone without external straining (pressure-cycling) is suggested by the results on polycrystalline zinc5 and polycrystalline beryllium,6 where nonbasal dislocations with a vector (1123) were reported. A significant improvement in the ductility of the bee metal chromium by pressure-cycling has been reported.7 On the other hand, limited studies on the pressure-cycling of the hcp metals zinc67819 and beryllium6 indicated no improvement in ductility; there only occurred an increase in the yield and ultimate strengths. The study on beryllium was limited to hot-pressed material. Consequently, additional studies on the effects of pressure-cycling on other forms of beryllium seemed desirable, especially since for chromium some authors10 have been unable to detect any improvement in ductility while others find a large improvement.7 That the ductility of polycrystalline beryllium at atmospheric pressure might be improved by prior straining under hydrostatic pressure was suggested by the known beneficial effects of cold work on the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature in the bee metals. It was reasoned that, by straining under hydrostatic pressure, fracture would be suppressed, and during the propagation of slip from one grain to its neighbor dislocations with a vector inclined to the basal plane"-'4 would operate. Upon subsequent straining at atmospheric pressure, these dislocations with a nonbasal vector would continue to operate and thereby reduce the tendency for fracture to occur, by assisting in the propagation of slip across grain boundaries and by interacting with any cracks that may develop. It was recognized that maximum improvement in ductility would probably occur at some optimum amount of prestrain under hydrostatic pressure. If the pre-strain was too small, an insufficient number of dislocations with a nonbasal vector would be activated; if it was too large, internal stresses (work hardening) might increase the flow stress more than the fracture stress, or incipient cracks or other damage could develop. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1) Materials and Specimen Preparation. The materials employed in this investigation consisted of hot-pressed block (General Astrometals, CR grade), extruded rod (General Astrometals, GB-2 grade with a reduction ratio of 8:1), and cross-rolled sheet (Brush S200, 0.065 in. thick). The analyses of these materials and mechanical properties at room temperature and atmospheric pressure are given in Table I. The grain size of the hot-pressed block was 15 to 16 µ, that of the extruded rod 10 to 11 µ, and that of the sheet 7 to 10 µ in the rolling plane and 5 to 6 µ in the thickness, all determined by the linear intercept method. Cation exchange between solution and a solid exchanger has been known for more than a century, but ion exchange is still in its infancy for metallurgical use. Still hampered by cost of media, it is faced with much development of actual physical handling. Growing consumption of the rarer metals and need to treat leaner ores are pushing extractive methods ahead. Public concern with stream pollution, or legal requirements, are forcing a clean-up of waste discharge. Industries are finding it vital to make some recovery from heretofore waste material to help pay costs of discharge treatment.

One of the problems facing both the designer and the user of magnetic separators is the evaluation of the body forces acting on particles in the magnetic field of the separator. Perhaps the most elegant method of evaluating the body force associated with a drum-type magnetic separator is that recently suggested by W. F. Brown.' Brown measures the radial component of the field intensity 1/2 in. from the drum surface and fits a Fourier series in the angle about the drum axis (Fig. 1). Because the activity coefficient of silicon dissolved in iron is influenced by the concentration of silicon as well as that of oxygen, the equilibrium constant K2 of reaction 2 becomes a function of metal composition, and, as shown in Fig. 1, a plot of log KP1 at 1600°C against the weight percent of silicon gives a smooth curve. Research on roof bolting has developed significant information with respect to the functions that can be performed by properly installed bolts and the methods that can be used to ensure that effective installation has been achieved. The present paper brings together results that are pertinent to the design of a bolting system for reinforcing horizontally stratified mine roof with vertical bolts. The design approach is based on the use of bolts to decrease the maximum bending stress within an arbitrary sequence of roof strata (see Fig. 2) in which the only loads are the weights of the individual beds. The use of rock bolts to achieve other objectives, such as to stabilize a fractured rock mass on the periphery of a mine opening,3 is excluded from consideration herein. Reinforcing effect of bolts consists of a friction effect and a suspension effect in combination. "Friction effect" refers to reduction of bending in a stratified roof due to clamping action of tensioned bolts, which compress the strata, thereby creating frictional resistance to displacement along planes of stratification. (The flexure of a sequence of strata is necessarily accompanied by horizontal displacement of each bed with respect to its neighbor, along mutual surfaces of contact.) Although the sliding of the beds tends to exert a shearing effect on the bolts, tests show that this has negligible influence on the bending stresses, probably because the bolts are so far apart. "Suspension effect" refers to the transfer of part of the weight of the weaker or thinner strata to one or more thick strata, which occurs when strata with differing tendencies to deflect are constrained to have equal deflection. The term "suspension" is used irrespective of whether the thin strata are above or below the thick strata, because tests show that the supporting effect of the flexurally more rigid roof strata is for practical purposes independent of their position in a bolted sequence of strata. An earlier paper4 dealt with a bolted unit in which all strata had equal flexural rigidity; bolting could develop a friction effect but no suspension effect. The present paper deals primarily with a bolted unit in which all strata do not have equal flexural rigidity, so that bolting can develop both a friction effect and a suspension effect. The reinforcing effect of the bolts was determined by a combination of experimental and theoretical stress analysis.4'6'7 The experimental method consisted of loading a model by rotating it in a centrifuge to simulate the gravity forces exerted about an underground excavation. Models were made from two different limestones, although the results are independent of the material because the elastic constants were taken into account in the data analysis. Electric resistance strain gages were bonded to the highest and lowest members of the bolted unit to determine the outer-fiber bending strains at the center and at the supports. The quantitative results presented herein are based on tests of 56 different models, which included a range of values for the structural parameters. Each model was tested several times, with different combinations of spacing and tension of the bolts. DESIGN EQUATIONS The effects of friction and suspension on the flexure of a bolted stratified roof can be expressed by the following equations, which give the maximum bending stress, the deflection, the friction effect, the suspension effect and the transferred load for any (the i-th) member of the bolted unit in terms of the structural parameters:

In addition to the localities in which tin-ores have been found in Mexico, mentioned in my paper on the a Tin-Deposits of Durango," presented to the Institute in March, 1895,* the following should be recorded. I am indebted to Captain Henry Freeman, of Durango, for the notes as to these occurrences. In the Sierra de la Candela, west of the Sierra de Sail Frailcisco and El Promontorio (the Llano de Guatimape intervening between the two ranges), cassiterite is found in veins and stream-beds. The veins are narrow, and the ores have the same characteristics as those of Potrillos. They were exploited by miners from Coneto in 1882-86, the more extensive work having been done on the northern side of the mountains. In the Sierra de las Palomas, on the western edge of the Otinapa, ranch, about 25 miles W.N.W. from the Diablo mine in the Cacaria district, there are several small veins, of which the ore, gangue and country-rock are similar to those of the Cerro de los Remedios, near the city of Durango. The latter are essentially the same as the Potrillos veins. In the Cerritos del Olote, in the Murphy grant, about 50 miles W.S.W. from Durango, there are old mines, now partially filled. The veins are narrow and poor; the ore is highly ferruginous; the country-rock is rhyolite, with some granite; immense quantities of chalcedonic rubbish are strewn along the course of the veins. In the Cerro Blanco, overlooking the pueblo of Mezquital, 48 miles south of Durango, tin-ore is mined by the natives.

This paper is presented in fulfillment of the promise made in my paper, " Remarks upon Surveying-Instruments,"" etc., and much of the material which would constitute an appropriate introductioil here is omitted, because it has been already published by the Institute, in connection with my own contributions- or those of Mr. Scott and others, in vols. xxviii. to xxxi. of the Transactions, and in the special Institute volume on Mine-Surveying Instruments. In these preceding publications will be found, for instance, descriptions of the writer's " miner's transit-theodolite" of 1863,† and his later " angleometer,"‡ both of which were steps of the progress in engineering instruments and methods which originated in the work of Bourns, before 1842, on the " BoxTunnel " of the Great Western railway in England, in which he had to make connections by direct telescopic sights down the shafts. About 1870 the writer devised a practical and much superior plan, and made detailed drawings for an instrument to meet all the conditions he had proposed prior to that year. The detailed plans were communicated to a celebrated optical firm in London; but, owing to their loss (in Paris or Germany, it is believed) and to other reasons, the matter was, for the time, allowed to lapse. Following upon Bourns's idea, my friend, the late Mr. Beansland, introduced, in 1856, a new system and a portable astronomical instrument.§ Such instruments, however, were neither common nor convenient, and did not come into general use among engineers.

Since the interpolation of exploratory data 1 can be no better than sampling procedures, a series of field experiments were conducted in an effort to determine whether hand-cut channel or core washability determinations best represent continuous miner produced run of mine coal. By obtaining a core drilled to within a few feet of channels taken from an underground face and then overmining both locations; core, channels and run-of-mine coal allocations were obtained from a common sample and all allocations were subjected to identical washability determinations. In order to compare results, basic rules2,3 previously anticipated and later published by the writer were employed. The first rule states that "For any full seam washability determination, the sulfur versus ash function for increasing cumulative specific gravity float coal fractions is linear". The second rule states that "For any full seam washability determination, the recovery versus ash function for increasing cumulative specific gravity float coal fractions is logarithmic".

The need for a carefully prepared set of special conditions, to be used with general conditions of contract or, alternatively, a purpose written contract for adoption in tunnelling work in Australia is discussed. Recent decisions on the proprietor's liability for tender information and arbitrator's power to award interest are examined. A new clause for inclusion in contracts specifically giving arbitrators power to award interest is suggested. Similarly, a new clause covering delays due to environmental disputes is suggested, particularly for marine outfall tunnels. An alternative method for the settlement of disputes by negotiation is suggested for consideration and contracts and contract administration are discussed as the possible weak point in the construction process. At the conference it is intended to present a method or process to be used in contract administration which should reduce disputes, result in a better quality and efficiency of administration and ultimately in better contracts'.

The writer's first experience with flotation was during World War I, in the bene-ficiation of Alabama graphite schist ores. One plant used a cone with a peripheral overflow; dried ore was distributed by a rotating disk onto the surface of the water. No reagents were added' The flake-graphite film floated along with some fine silica. Dewatering screens separated the flake. Naturally unit capacities were low but results were satisfactory. Minerals separation mechanical flotation machines were used in another graphite mill. pine oil was added directly to the head cells, with very good results. All the graphite concentrates from both types of flotation were carefully refined after drying by passing through burr mills, followed by very close sizing on sifters. In March 1927, the writer ran a very successful flotation test on minus 28-mesh, deslimed, Tennessee brown phosphate "sand,"† using a mechanical laboratory machine built in the shops of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., through the courtesy of Ernest Klepetko. The machine was soon converted to a subaeration type, with improved results. This phosphate research program was greatly enlarged and led to the formation of the phosphate Recovery corporation. The development of nonmetallic flotation followed rapidly. The first flotation machine for bene- ficiation of phosphate was installed in January 1928, in a pilot mill, by International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, at Mulberry, Florida. These machines were Minerals Separation, 24-in., sub-,,,tion types, with weir control of pulp between cells. The sand bleeders were very small—about 1¼-in. diameter. As the feed flake. Is to 25 per cent plus 28-mesh material, the cells choked up frequently. This was corrected by cutting a 2 by 6-in. bleeder opening above the impellers, at grid level, which short-circuited the coarse fractions directly into the feed of the next cell. The matter of size classification and grinding was a considerable problem, which does not come within the scope of this article. Because of the troubles noted above, cascade-type roughers were installed in the second flotation plant, built about 1930. Experimental cells had been tried in 1928. General plant layout is shown in Fig. 1 and details of the cascade construction in Fig. 2. The cascade installation in plant NO. 2 gave good results and eliminated troubles due to choke-ups and coarse feed. The capacities and metallurgical results equaled those of the modified 24-in. Minerals Separation flotation machines in plant No. I The objections to the cascade installation are the floor space and mill height required. The series, to be known as "Awards to Honor Men in Industry," consists of two cash prizes, $1,000 and $500 each, accompanied by a gold and silver medal respectively, and 100 bronze medals. No one above the rank of foreman will be eligible. Because of the diversity of .American indus-try, the Foundation is planning to confine its awards during the first year to the following branches of man-ufacturing: automotive, building, electrical, metal and textiles, including clothing. A procedure is described for recovering both lead and sulfur from galena flotation concentrate, comprising the following steps: (1) Aqueous oxidation of the concentrate, using ferric sulfate to convert lead sulfide to sulfate and to give elemental sulfur; (2) regeneration of the ferric sulfate by electrolysis in a diaphragm cell; (3) treatment of the leach residue with ammonium carbonate solution to change the lead to an acid-soluble form and to produce ammonium sulfate as a byproduct; (4) solution of the lead carbonate in hydro-fluosilicic acid followed by electrolysis to recover the lead as metal and regenerate the acid; and (5) extraction of the elemental sulfur from the final residue with an organic solvent. About 90 percent of the lead can be recovered by the above method as 99.9-percent-pure metal, together with two-thirds of the sulfur--half in the elemental form and half as ammonium sulfate.

Grefco Inc. operates two diatomite mines in the western Santa Ynez Mountains. The larger of the two mines, the Palos Colorados Mine, is located approximately seven miles southeast of Lompoc. The Miguelito Mine is located about two miles south of Lompoc on the west side of the Miguelito Canyon. Diatomite from the Palos Colorados and Miguelito mines is trucked to the Grefco plant at Lompoc for processing (Figure 1). HISTORY Grefco, Inc. evolved from the originating Dicalite Company which in 1929 began operations at the Walteria plant in the Palos Verdes Hills south of Los Angeles. In 1942 Dicalite leased the Palos Colorados mine at Lompoc. In 1944 the Dicalite Company was purchased by Great Lakes Carbon Corporation.

In the past year, two very innovative gold ore processing plants have been designed, built and commissioned by Gekko Systems Pty Ltd. The first plant in Vietnam utilises conventional crushing and ball milling followed by gravity concentration (Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) and Falcon concentrator), flotation, intensive leaching (GFIL), the first industrial scale use of AuRIX«100å ion exchange resin and a cyanide destruction circuit. The second plant, in Australia, uses a three-stage crushing circuit to crush the gold ore to minus 1 mm, followed by gravity concentration utilising a rougher, scavenger, cleaner circuit of IPJs and a Falcon concentrator. A direct smeltable gold concentrate is produced as well as a lower grade concentrate for future intensive leaching or sale. Both plants were designed and built within very tight time frames and budgetary constraints. The experience gained during the plantsÆ design, commissioning and operation are discussed.

Data are presented in this paper to show that addition of zirconium to sand-cast Mg-Th alloys effects a marked decrease in the grain size of these alloys which is accompanied by a significant increase in the mechanical properties over the entire range of thorium content investigated. The beneficial effect of zirconium on the strength properties is maintained at elevated temperatures up to 700°F. In addition the alloys exhibit exceptionally high creep resistance at temperatures up to 600°F. Zirconium does not greatly improve the strength or creep characteristics of extruded Mg-'Th alloys. Cerium is not a desirable addition to Mg-Th-Zr alloys. IN a previous paper,' it was shown that addition of thorium to magnesium imparts exceptionally high resistance to creep at elevated temperatures both in the sand-cast and in the extruded states. The large grain size of the sand-cast alloys, however, renders them of questionable value as engineering materials. Sauerwald² showed that the grain size can be reduced effectively by the addition of zirconium. Results of a detailed study of the properties of Mg-Th-Zr alloys over a wide range of thorium content are presented in this paper. In accordance with the preliminary findings of Sauerwald,² it is shown here that Mg-Th-Zr alloys possess the unusual combination of fine grain size and a high level of strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Some information on the effect of cerium on the properties of Mg-Th-Zr alloys is presented also. Effect of Th on Solubility of Zr in Molten Mg Sand-cast test bars and 3 in. diam extrusion billets of Mg-Th-Zr and Mg-Th-Ce-Zr alloys* were pre- pared according to the procedures described in the previous paper.' The zirconium was added in the form of sponge metal as supplied by the Bureau of Mines.' The maximum amount of zirconium that usually can be introduced into magnesium at the customary alloying temperature of 1350° F is about 0.7 pct. The analyses in Table I clearly show that thorium in- creases the solubility of zirconium in liquid magnesium. The tabulated zirconium contents are designated as "acid soluble;" this serves to distinguish these values from the small amount of zirconium that is not dissolved when the alloy is subjected to the action of a dilute acid solution. The "acid-insoluble" zirconium is believed to be ineffective as an alloying ingredient. The acid-insoluble zirconium contents ranged between 0.03 and 0.16 pct in the present alloys, the tendency was toward higher values in alloys with higher thorium content. In contrast to the effect of thorium, cerium decreases the solubility of zirconium in magnesium. This is shown by the three Mg-Th-Ce-Zr alloyst in- cluded in Table I and stands in agreement with the observations of Nelson and Stricter".' on Mg-misch-metal-Zr alloys. Effect of Zr on Grain Size of Mg-Th Alloys The potent effect of zirconium as a grain refiner has been demonstrated for many types of magnesium alloys.3-8 Of greatest importance to date are Mg-Zn-Zr alloys5,6,8 and Mg-mischmetal-Zr alloys.3,4,7 Zirconium has also been found to exert a marked grain-refining action on Mg-Th alloys. All the Mg-Th-Zr alloys cast in the form of ½ in. diam test bars have an exceedingly fine grain size (Table I). Reference to the previous paper' will show that binary Mg-Th alloys containing up to 6 pct Th are almost completely columnar even in the M in. diam reduced section of a test bar, and that 10 to 50 pct Th alloys have an equiaxed grain structure of 0.03 to 0.08 in. The data in Table I also show that addition of cerium to Mg-Th-Zr alloys has no effect on the grain size. In addition to increasing the strength properties, the fine grain size of Mg-Th-Zr alloys
