The properties of the company lie within the Pachuca district, State of Hidalgo, Mexico, connected by three railway lines with Mexico City, 55 miles southwest, and by two lines with Vera Cruz, 250 miles southeast. The ores were formerly divided by sorting into two classes, smelting and milling, the former averaging about 2 oz. gold and 335 oz. silver, the latter 0.12 oz. gold and 23 oz. silver. The smelting ores were sold to custom plants, principally the American Smelting & Refining Co. at Aguascalientes. The milling ores were treated by the patio process at the Guadalupe Hacienda, at Pachuca. This patio was probably the largest in existence at the time and continued in active operation up to March, 1910. In January, 1910, the mines and patio were sold to English interests, represented by Camp Bird Limited. Two new companies were formed, the Compania de Santa Gertrudis, S. A., to operate the mines, and the Compania Beneficiadora de Pachuca, S. A., to build and operate a custom cyanide milling plant. (Pig. 1.) Geology The historical geology of the Pachuca district is described by Fred J. Pope as follows: 1. The most recent sedimentary rooks in the district belong to the Cretaceous period. 2. The Cretaceous rocks were penetrated by large intrusions of ande-site (referred to hereafter as primary andesite) which occur as elliptical dome-shaped masses, striking northwest-southeast. These andesite bodies are from 8 to 15 miles long and from 6 to 10 miles wide. 3. A period of erosion during which the contour of the andesite domes was changed. 4. Andesite flows (secondary andesite) which rest unconformably on the primary andesites.

The adaptation of European methods of concentrating ores to suit the conditions of this country has followed the lines that simplify machinery, diminish labor and increase capacity. Noteworthy instances are the substitution of hydraulic classifiers for the last one or two trommels in the series, and the substitution of a distributing-tank for the slimes in the place of the Spitzkasten. The question may be fairly asked, At what point do losses become serious in consequence of these changes? It is to study this question that the investigation herein described has been undertaken. After the losses are located and the methods of stopping them are pointed out, it will then lie with the individual mill to decide whether or not the plans proposed will save suficient value to warrant their adoption. In the discussion of sorting followed by sizing, as the terms are used in this paper, me have to deal with the preparation of slimes by the Spitzkasten for subsequent washing upon the slime-table. The Spitzkasten, or pointed box, is an inverted hollow pyramid, generally of wood, usually with four faces or sides coming together in a point below. The sides can have, according to Rittinger, a minimum angle of slope of 50" with the horizontal. The feed-water carrying fine slimes (less than 0.01 inch, or 0.25 mm. in diameter) for treatment is fed at one end and carefully distributed over the whole width. The outlet is over the opposite end. The purpose of this study is to investigate the susceptibility characteristics of domestic and agricultural water supplies that may be vulnerable to diminution or total loss of supply when active longwall mining is in the vicinity of the potable aquifer systems of southwestern Pennsylvania. The study focuses on water supplies in Greene and Washington Counties with reported losses or reductions in supply that were attributed to the seven active longwall mines in operation between 2003 and 2008. The undermined water supplies represent a variety of hydrogeological settings and mining conditions prevalent in the southwestern Pennsylvania longwall coalfield. The susceptibility characteristics investigated include hydrogeological setting, proximal location to mining, and climatic conditions at the time of impact. The investigation considers the relationship between geological and mining characteristics. Geological characteristics include overburden composition and geomorphology of the surface; mining characteristics include mining method, depth, and extraction thickness. It was determined from the study that the average overburden thickness at each mine site is indicative of hydrological changes to potable aquifer systems, with the overall impact frequency at each site decreasing as depth to mining increases. However, depth to mining was not the governing factor when hydrological responses were determined on a case-by-case basis. To fully analyze and hopefully predict potential impacts by longwall mine subsidence, it is necessary to consider additional factors including topography, distance to mining, mining method, and climatic conditions at time of undermining. The investigation serves the purpose of enhancing our understanding of hydrogeological responses to longwall mining and will aid in predicting potential impacts to southwestern Pennsylvania?s wells and springs in proximity to future mining.

Adsorption was measured for barium ion and laurate radical, using radioactively marked agents, over wide range of concentrations. Laurate adsorbed in absence of barium fails to float. With barium, flotation-effective laurate coating needs not exceed 5 pct of monolayer. Barium adsorption then is several fold larger. No barium laurate coating is obtained. IN general, fatty acids or their alkali salts do not cause clean quartz to float. However, the presence of multivalent ions, such as the alkaline-earth metal ions and heavy-metal ions, can activate quartz and thus make it respond to soap flotation. The mechanism of activation and soap flotation of quartz has been studied.'-' The problem was attacked by making flotation tests rather than by careful adsorption measurements on suspensions of ground quartz in solutions containing the activator and the collector. Attempts have been made to determine the adsorption of barium ion and calcium ion on quartz. The results have only qualitative value as the analytical methods were not adequately precise. Artificial radioactivity and progress in radioactivity detection have introduced a new analytical tool, which can have a sensitivity several orders of magnitude greater than that of other methods."-" In the experimental work described in this paper the radioactive tracers, barium 140 and carbon 14, were employed. Lauric acid was synthesized, having a radioactive carbon atom and was used with Ba" to study the adsorption of barium and laurate ions from aqueous solution on ground quartz. Flotation tests, using the vacuum flotation technique,' were run in conjunction with the adsorption experiments. The object of this investigation was to understand better the reaction mechanism of barium activation and soap flotation of quartz. Methods and Materials Quartz Sample Preparation: Lumps of hand-picked quartz, washed free of stains, were reduced in size to —20 mesh in laboratory crushers. The product was boiled in concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove the abraded iron. The cleaned product then was ground dry in a laboratory porcelain mill, using siliceous pebbles, to pass through a 200 mesh screen. The ground product was deslimed by sedimentation at 37 microns. This —200 mesh +400 mesh material was subjected again to boiling with concentrated hydrochloric acid, followed by washing with distilled water and further desliming. The cycle was repeated until no trace of iron could be detected in the wash liquor. During the final washing, the pH of the wash water was checked to insure the complete removal of the acid from the mineral. The quartz then was rinsed with conductivity water. The resulting product was dried in a drying oven and stored in mason jars. The impurities (spectrographic) were as follows: Al, 0.01 to 0.001 pct; Li, Mg, Mn, Na, each less than 0.001 pct; Fe and Cu not detected. The specific surface of the quartz sample was determined by the krypton gas adsorption method.' The average of two measurements was 881 sq cm per g. The calculated specific surface for 37/74-micron quartz particles, using a surface factor of 1.96; is 900 sq cm per g. This is in good agreement with the measured value of 881 sq cm per g. IN every research it is desirable to eliminate as many variables as possible and to leave only a few to be investigated one at a time. Metallurgical problems are no exception. Some of the variables that are difficult to control are the size, the distribution, and the orientation of the grains in a metallic test piece. It is therefore very desirable to obtain isolated metallic grains (single crystals, as they are commonly called) large enough to enable one to study their mechanical and physical properties. The present investigation is a part of magnetic research work on iron and iron alloys, undertaken to obtain, if possible, the magnetic properties of pure iron (Fe). This paper will deal primarily with the preparation of single crystals of iron and their mechanical properties, while another paper, by T. D. Yensen, now in preparation, will deal specifically with their magnetic properties. The work with "single crystals" is attracting more attention every year among the investigators in metallurgy. Van Liempt1 gives an interesting summary of the work done and the different methods used in the preparation of metallic single crystals. Briefly stated, the four principal methods used are the following: 1. The cooling of a liquid metal in such a way that the crystallization would start at one point only, causing the entire liquid to solidify as one crystalline unit. This method can be successfully applied to the majority of the metals that do not have any allotropic transformations in the solid state. It has been used and described by a number of investigators,2 but it has never been successfully applied to iron on account of allotropic transformations.

The Coal supply and demand review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. In 1991, the US coal industry produced 902 Mt (994 million st) of coal, according to preliminary data compiled by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This amount was 32 Mt (35 million st) less than the record 933.5 Mt (1 billion st) produced in 1990. Most of the decrease in coal production occurred east of the Mississippi River. The substantial stock buildup that stimulated production in 1990 was not repeated in 1991. In addition, coal consumption by electric utilities and coke plants dropped by about 1.8 Mt and 4.5 Mt (2 million and 5 million st), respectively. Moreover, a higher level of coal exports failed to bolster the 1991 production. Production Surface mines accounted for about 59% of the 902 Mt (994 million st) of coal produced in 1991. Underground mines produced for 41%. More than one-fourth of the total coal output was from federal and Indian coal leases. Production of all ranks of coal, except subbituminous, declined in 1991. Bituminous coal is produced mainly in the East. It totaled an estimated 590 Mt (651 million st), a 6% decrease. Production of subbituminous coal, mostly in the West, rose 3% to a record 228 Mt (252 million st). Lignite output was from Texas and North Dakota. It decreased by 1 % to 79 Mt (87 million st). Anthracite production, all from eastern Pennsylvania, fell by 17% to 2.7 Mt (3 million st).

Commercial coke is made to-day in the United States chiefly from the Appalachian, the Illinois and the Colorado coal-fields. The measures of the great Appalachian coal-fields furnish by far the largest proportion, only about 1 per cent. coming from those of Illinois and Colorado. This is not due, however, to a corresponding difference in area. The Illinois field covers about 47,000 square miles in Illinois, Southern Indiana and Western Kentucky. The coal is high in both ash and sulphur, and on this account nearly all the attempts which have been made from time to time to coke it have resulted in failure, so far at least as the requirements of ironmasters are concerned. The Australian industrial relations system is in a state of constant change. We are undergoing a transformation from a compulsory arbitration and an award based system to one which is fundamentally rooted in the concepts of enterprise bargaining. This is true both at the State and Federal level. The structural changes which facilitate the movement away from the predominance of Awards to enterprise agreements has been fostered by both sides of the political spectrum and is a cornerstone of their respective industrial relations platforms.In determining what form or combination of forms of industrial instrument(s) should apply to the individual enterprise, employers must have regard to the viability and sustainability of each form in the changing industrial climate. In particular employers should have regard to the needs and agendas of their employees and unions which may purport to represent Them.

Interest in mineral sand mining in the south west corner of Western Australia began in the late 1940's and significant production commenced in 1956. Early land use conflicts arose because of conservation implications (Ludlow tuart forest), expanded to include post-mining rehabilitation requirements (the Wonnerup mine near Busselton) and today include some agricultural/mining disputes. These latter conflicts are largely caused by the need for mining companies to secure longer-term reserves. To date, deposits containing mineral valued at A$440 million have been sterilized and are unlikely to become available in the future. There is additional pressure being placed on presently available reserves and a pessimistic picture could be drawn, whereby the southwest mineral sands industry ceases to exist by the year 2010. However, sensible land use planning, the support of policticians and the community, and responsible attitudes towards compensation and rehabilitation could, in combination, see the industry maintain significant mineral output until the middle of the 21st century. Examples of deposits sterilized by adverse land use will be given.

THE aluminum oxide known as corundum has several varieties that have been used as gem materials since ancient times. These include the red variety called ruby, the blue variety sapphire, and the asteriated types of ruby and sapphire. Asteriated sapphire was known to the ancients under the name of astrios, and descriptions of this gem were given by Pliny and other early writers. The relation of these gem materials to each other as varieties of a single species, corundum, was first clearly established by Haüy in 1805 and J. M. Güthe1 in 1809. Natural gem corundum is obtained principally in Ceylon, Siam, Burma, India, and Australia. Star sapphires and rubies always have been highly prized and in recent years have become particularly popular in the United States. Natural star rubies of large size and fine quality are extremely rare and rank with large and fine emeralds and diamonds as the most valuable of gem stones. Interest thus attaches to the recent success in commercially synthesizing star sapphires and rubies of a size and perfection unmatched by nature.

The benefits of computer simulation in the design of a refracto­ry gold autoclave facility is discussed. Three computer simula­tion programs used for autoclave design are briefly described in this paper. 1) METS IM® - A Process Simulation Software Package Developed by Proware: Mass and energy balances are conducted around the auto­clave and its ancillary processes. Results from the process simulation define process equipment requirements and are used for establishing operating costs. The p_rocess model integrates various unit operations including grinding, acidu­lation, pressure oxidation, counter-current-decantation, neutralization, cyanide leaching, and carbon-in-pulp or car­bon-in-leach. 2) ALGOR® - Finite Element Analysis (FEA): A computer software program is used in the design and analysis of brick lined pressure vessels, such as autoclave, heater, and flash vessels. This software creates a steady state thermal model, and accurately predicts temperature distribution throughout the entire vessel, including nozzles, which represent regions of high thermal intensity. 3) Compress©: A software package developed by Codeware used for the sizing of pressure vessel components, includ­ing shells, heads and nozzles, according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1.

The Mt Sinivit gold project is located approximately 50km SSW of Rabaul in the Baining Mountains of the Gazelle Peninsula, East New Britain Province. The deposits were discovered in mid- 1983 and form part of a larger 26km long zone of variably aurif- erous quartz veining. There are no surface indications or previ- ous records of any prospecting activity or production from the region. The Mt Sinivit deposits consist of a series of oxide and sulphide reserves and resources contained in the Wild Dog (South- ern, Central and Northern oxide zones; Northern sulphide zone) and Kavursuki veins. The proposed exploitation of the oxide reserves by a series of small-medium sized open pits has been fostered by the PNG Department of Mining & Petroleum (DMP) as part of a government policy to encourage the development of a small-medium sized mining industry in the country. The aim of this paper is to document the steps and procedures involved in obtaining the grant of a Mining Lease emphasising the time and the expenditures required during each step of the approvals process for the Mt Sinivit project.

At a special inaugural ceremony in Blue Hill, Maine on August 3rd, Governor John H. Reed detonated the first blast to signify the beginning of development work on a new copper-zinc mining venture that seems destined to focus increased interest in the mineral potential of that State. The property which is the first new base metal mine to be discovered in the northern Appalachians in 30 years, is owned by Black Hawk Mining Co., a subsidiary of Denison Mines Ltd. of Toronto. When it goes on-stream in 1966, it will join Ducktown, Tenn., as the only active copper producing region, east of the Mississippi River. According to official reports submitted by the Company to Robert G. Doyle, Maine's State Geologist, Black Hawk has found ore reserves totalling 4.5 million tons. Assays show 2.8 million tons of 2.0'; copper and 0.4 oz. of silver per ton; 1.2 million tons of 16.75% zinc and 0.58% copper; and 0.5 million tons of 6.75% lead with 4.25 oz. of silver per toil and some zinc.

AN EXAMINATION of the Pachuca and El Oro. districts in July, 1920, although cursory and incomplete, disclosed facts of more than passing interest to the student of ore deposits; and inasmuch as the literature on these districts is limited and some of their features are little understood, a brief account may prove valuable as reconnaissance observations to be amplified by more thorough and competent observers in the future. Where no complete monograph of important mining camps has been published a partial presentation of the data is often useful, as it sometimes leads to fuller and more accurate descriptions, by stimulating discussion. The following notes are presented with the consent of Mr. A. F. Main, managing director of the El Oro Mining and Railway Co., whose fund of information and wide acquaintance with both districts alone made it possible to cover so much ground in a short time. I have also to acknowledge gratefully the aid of Messrs. C. A. Lantz and D: S. Calland of the Santa Gertrudis and Real del Monte companies, respectively, in connection with permission to inspect geological features of interest in their mines.

The paper begins by describing an underhand cut-and-fill mining concept for a 50m thick, generally tabular though irregularly shaped orebody dipping at 30 degrees and occurring at a depth of between 2300 and 2700m in the Sudbury Basin. From this, the broad design requirements of a fill system are stated. Two and three-dimensional numerical models are then described which were built to evaluate the theoretical benefits of different types of fill reinforcement. Included in this evaluation are the effects of span, fill strength, fill tightness, as well as static and dynamic loading types. Results, supported by large-scale physical models, are presented to show the significance of reinforcement on stable, undermined fill performance. Finally the paper describes work which has been done to evaluate the suitability of so-called silicated cemented backfill. This system is, in principal, attractive for deep mining applications since transportation is in the "safe" hydraulic regime, while fill water run-off, segregation and shrinkage effects are potentially eliminated in the stopes. The results from various surface and underground trial pours are reported which substantiate the proposed use of this type of backfill at depth.

OF THE many instruments devised for the measurement of magnetic anomalies, the ordinary dip needle, by virtue of its superior simplicity of construction, facility of manipulation, and definiteness of interpretation, seems to merit serious attention as the instrument most readily applicable to the detection of magnetic anomalies of the higher order of magnitude. , In spite of the fact that it has been used for many years for the discovery of iron ore in Europe and in the Lake Superior region of America, its capabilities as a geological instrument have not yet been thoroughly plumbed. The Wisconsin Geological Survey, under Dr. W. 0. Hotchkiss, E. F. Bean, and H. R. Aldrich, has been most thorough in developing the technique of the instrument, and the results it has obtained have aroused a general interest in a more widespread use of geomagnetics as an exploration method and the dip needle as a geological instrument. The simplicity of the instrument is an especial advantage, as it can be used by anyone, regardless of his technical training; but to insure useful results not only is a knowledge of the background of geomagnetics necessary but also an understanding of the principles of the instrument itself.

A few hates on the occurrence and significance of mud volcanoes in Colombia may be of interest at the present time, owing to the renewed activity in geological exploration of the coastal regions bordering the Caribbean Sea. The best-known volcanoes are found a few miles from the seacoast. One is situated to the south of Puerto Colombia; the second, to the east of Cartagena near the village of Turbaco; and the third, near the village of Puerto Escondido south of the Sinu River. Others are reported in more inaccessible localities. Usually they stand 2 1/2 or 3 ft. (0.762 or 0.914 m.) above the surrounding ground at the crater, though several craters from 10 to 20 ft. -(3.04 to 6.09 m.) "apart will often build up an extensive mound at low gradient. The shallow mound may cover 1/2 or 3/4 acre (0.2 to 0.3 ha.) with an elevation of 12 or 15 ft. (3.65 or 4.57 m.) at the, center. The craters are formed of hardened blue clay; the inside diameters vary from 14 to 24 in. (35.56 to 60.96 cm.). The rim is continuous, except on one side where there is usually a cut 3 or 4 in. deep, thus allowing an overflow. The craters are filled to the' rim-cut with a thick mixture of blue clay mud and water, which is kept in agitation by escaping gas. Fig. 1 shows the bubble in the act of bursting and Fig. 2 the appearance of the surface of the viscous fluid a second or so later. The frequency of the explosions is determined by the weight of the column of fluid in the neck of the volcano, consequently, such explosions are not synchronous in a group of craters. Ordinarily, there arc two or three explosions in about 3 minutes. The supply of gas is small but steady and sufficient pressure must accumulate before the bubble can enter the column of fluid. The water is derived from the surface and enters the scdirnentary strata not far distant from the volcano. During long dry seasons, as the supply of water fails the volcano dries and geyser action ceases. The temperature of the muddy fluid is normal; the gas is dry and inflammable. - No petroleum products come with the gas.
