Pilot-plant tests have demonstrated that it is possible to produce low-sulphur sponge iron (0.03 to 0.0; per cent sulphur) as a continuous process in an internally fired rotary kiln from iron ore or mill scale; a solid carbonaceous reducing agent; and dolomite to control the sulphur content. The proportion of dolomite employed is small, so that it does not add materially to the cost of the sponge iron. The entire operation is carried out at temperatures well below the melting point of iron, so that the product is discharged in granular form. Compared with other methods for the production of sponge iron, the rotary-kiln method has the advantage of simplicity and low cost of equipment and, in addition, requires little labor for the operation of the process. The pilot-plant equipment used for this work was sufficiently large to demonstrate that the production of low-sulphur sponge iron in rotary kilns is feasible and that the costs are not excessive for applications in which sponge iron has distinct advantages over competing materials. This report constitutes a part of a program by the Bureau of Mines under a special Congressional appropriation for studying gaseous and solid fuel reduction of iron ores. Numerous articles on various phases of these investigations have appeared in Bureau of Mines publications or technical journals. Other articles are being prepared and will be published in the near future. The present program, which is under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, Assistant Director of the Bureau of Mines, was initiated in 1942. However, a considerable portion of the work was a continuation of previous research performed by the Bureau. Previous investigators1-4 utilizing the rotary kiln for the production of sponge iron did not develop a suitable method for controlling the sulphur content. A review of the literature shows that the sulphur content in the product usually exceeded 0.1 per cent unless reducing agents with very low sulphur contents were employed. This high sulphur value made the product generally undesirable for use as melting stock in electric or open-hearth furnaces. The production of sponge iron in an internally fired rotary kiln has been described in detail in Bureau of Mines Bullelin 2702; consequently, this article will be confined mostly to new features of the process—that is, means for controlling the sulphur content of the sponge iron. Suitable raw materials include iron ores or mill scale; coal or coke for reducing them, and sized dolomite ( — poi-100-mesh) as the sulphur-controlling agent. A mixture of the raw materials in granular form is fed into the elevated end of the kiln, which is fired axially from the lower or discharge end. The coal mining industry has experienced a general trend toward longwall operations. An increasing percentage of underground coal is being mined by longwalls. And productivity in longwalls is likewise increasing. Operators of longwalls, however, have not yet reached a state of mining euphoria. Competitiveness within the industry and from alternate fuel sources is forcing continued pursuit of higher productivities and lower costs. [Figures 1, 2 and 3] present trends in the industry. Longwall mines, as defined here, are those reportedly having longwall installations in each of the respective years. Production from both the continuous miner and longwall units is included in the longwall mines. Nonlongwall mines are all other underground mines. Productivity calculations are based on total employee-hours associated with the operation. Annual percent increases in productivity appear to have peaked in the 1985-1987 time frame. This was due, in part, to implementation of technological advancements and improvements in management-labor relations. The results shown in [Fig. 3] aroused the author's curiosity. The first question was "Have technological advancements to increase productivity peaked?" It does not appear so.

Arising out of the world energy crisis and the increasing demand for nuclear fuels, the Elliot Lake operation of Denison Mines Limited is currently expanding its facilities to meet its increased contractual obligations of some 90,500,000 kg of uranium oxide between now and the year 2011. The mining of uranium is subjected to increasingly stringent environmental controls by governmental and associated agencies so as to safeguard the health of the employees. A heavy burden of responsibility is thus placed on the Ventilation Department to ensure, through efficient planning and good control, that satisfactory ventilation conditions prevail throughout the entire operation. Management realized at the outset of the present phase of this expansion, that the establishment of a properly organized and administered Ventilation Department would be essential to ensure that long term production goals are achieved within the numerous constraints imposed by existing legislation. The paper describes the formation of the department by recruiting technically competent, but largely inexperienced, ventilation personnel, their practical training programme, the departmental structure and the operational and control responsibilities of the ventilation staff.

A Research on iron blast-furnace slags has been in progress since 1922 in the metallurgical department of the University of Wisconsin, supplemented by observations, tests and critical examination of operating records at 10 furnaces. From the data thus collected information has been put into forms suitable for use by furnace operators and is given in this report and the three accompanying papers.' In the viscosity results reported, it is estimated that temperatures were measured within 5" C. and that the viscosity determination of the particular slag investigated is accurate within ± 4 per cent. In the viscosity diagrams in the various papers, the equal viscosity lines were drawn in such a manner that in all cases they are located correctly with respect to the actual experimental results, but when determining a viscosity for a particular composition from the diagrams, the viscosity may. be slightly less accurate than the experimentally determined viscosity for the same slag, for the reason that the iso-vis lines interpolated between the experimental results may be shifted slightly without violation of the experimental data. The viscosity diagrams represent our judgment of their position under the above conditions, and we believe the relative accuracy of viscosity data taken from the diagrams is more than sufficient for any use to which the data may be put. Hundreds of samples of slags synthetically produced in the laboratory and of actual furnace slags have been studied in various ways. The ranges of compositions of slags used for viscosity measurements are: silica 25 to 55 per cent.; alumina 0 to 35 per cent.; lime 25 to 55 per cent.; magnesia 0 to 20 per cent. These measurements were made at temperatures of 1250°, 1300°, 1350°, 1400°, 1450°, 1500°, 1550°, 1600" and 1650" Centigrade. Descriptions of apparatus, methods used and statements of the problems investigated have been published in the papers listed in the bibliography beginning on page 120.

The Copper flotation concentrate produced at Gortdrum mines contains about 1% Hg. This article deals with the treatment used to produce a substantially mercury-free copper concentrate. Metallic mercury is a byproduct. Nearly all the mercury in the Gortdrum concentrate is present in the copper mineral tennantite-tetrahedrite. This mineral is variably distributed throughout the ore body so that by selective mining it was possible to produce salable concentrate relatively low in mercury while the treatment plant was being built. Roasting was the only feasible method found for removing the mercury from the concentrate, and it was decided that this should be done in an atmosphere with limited oxygen. A multiple hearth furnace is used. Mercury soot is condensed from the gas stream and treated to produce prime virgin mercury. Problems were experienced at first with materials handling, oxygen control, cooling of the calcined concentrate, treatment of the mercury soot, and in the metallurgical accounting. Precautions were necessary to avoid health problems. The plant is now operating reasonably well. The value of the mercury produced does not warrant the cost of the plant but without it, the copper concentrate could not be sold.

The biohydrometallurgy of gold is based on different processes which could be grouped into four main groups (Attia, Litchfield and Vaaler, 1985; Karavaiko et al, 1988; Groudev, 1990): 1. bacterial oxidation of gold-bearing sulphide minerals by chemolithotrophic bacteria to facilitate the subsequent chemical extraction of gold; 2. solubilisation of gold from oxide ores by means of heterotrophic bacteria; 3. recovery of gold from solutions by biosorption; and 4. microbial modifications of the surface of gold-bearing sulphide minerals to improve the subsequent gold concentration by physical dressing methods (eg flotation, oil agglomeration).

Foundry sands used to make molds and cores have been very important to foundrymen since metal casting began hundreds of years ago. They are now used in two basic ways, either in an uncured green state, grain-bonded with clay, or in a set cured state achieved with sand that, mixed with resins or oils, is cured by baking or by chemical reaction. The term sand, as generally used in foundry applications, may best be defined as material composed of granular particles of mineral matter, ranging in size from 0.5 to 2 mm in diameter. The particulate nature of the material may be the result of natural disaggregation or result from crushing and screening of rock or ceramic materials; crushed and screened products are sometimes referred to as "manufactured sand." Based on their origin, the raw materials for foundry sands will vary in grain shape, grain composition, relative surface, grain size, and grain distribution patterns. These properties, in addition to their chemical analyses, sintering point and expansion characteristics play an important part in the choice of sands used as the base molding or core aggregate in metal casting. Sands with different origins may be blended to produce specific compositions and grain size distributions. Early raw material requirements based on silica sand were simple, but as sand/core/mold technology became more sophisticated and binder technology continued to be developed, the physical properties of foundry sands became more critical. Silica sand is composed of quartz, along with, in most cases, small amounts of feldspar, mica, clay, and other common minerals. Although silica sand is still by far the most widely used base material in production of molds and cores used in metal casting, other natural mineral sands have their own unique characteristics and fill an important niche in special applications. As a result, the term sand, as applied to raw materials used in metal casting, has been logically extended to include granular materials composed of a group of minerals other than quartz. With increased use in advanced foundry technology, natural sands composed predominantly of zircon, chromite, staurolite, or aluminum silicate minerals and of granularized chromite or olivine, have become more than just alternate materials and are now commonly classified as sands when the grains are sand-sized. Foundry sand may therefore be considered under two categories: silica sands and non-silica sands.

THE first steam shovels used in this country were built by the Otis Company, of Boston, about 50 years ago, but as they were of very crude construction and rather unsuccessful only a few were built. For possibly 10 years prior to 1884 successful steam shovels were made and used on certain classes of work, but it was not until that time that they were manufactured in quantities and began to play an important part in all classes of excavation. From that time up to the present day there have been gradual but continuous improvements on the original shovel, not only in the mechanical construction, but also in the design of boilers and engines which are best adapted to this class of service. In proposing a change from steam to electric operation we have to deal with a steam equipment which has not only proved its worth but has probably reached its highest stage of development and efficiency. That the electric shovel is a possibility cannot be denied, as at present from 12 to 18 shovels are in operation in this country. These shovels may be divided into three classes: the friction electric, which is operated by a single constant-speed motor with friction clutches; the three or four motor direct-current equipment, and the three or four motor alternating-current equipment. It is the second and third classes that I wish to deal with, as the first class does not compare favorably with the steam shovel so far as speed is concerned, although it may be operated as cheaply. There is probably no other class of machinery that presents a duty cycle as severe as that of the shovel, which is very short, varying from 7 to 12 sec. on the hoist, from 7 to 12 sec. on the thrust, and from 10 to 18 sec. on the swing, making a complete cycle in from 17 to 30 sec., and the motor to meet these requirements must have a sufficiently low armature inertia to permit of rapid acceleration and quick reversals under small power. It should also be a motor of rugged design, as it must be subjected to severe overloads and shocks and frequent reversals. This is especially true of the hoist motors and, to a lesser degree, of the swing motor; the thrust motor being practically stalled during the digging operation, although it may revolve or overhaul, according to conditions, and is operated at full speed only after the hoisting operation is completed.

Most of the world's zinc metal is produced via the roast- leach-electrowinning (RLE) process. The process is well established, but most of the sulphur in the sphalerite concentrates reports in the acid, which has to be stored and/or sold. There are significant incentives to develop a simpler process with much reduced acid generation. Ferric ion is a well known oxidant for most sulphides, in particular sphalerite, and it converts the sulphide to elemental sulphur. Based on stoichiometry, however, the amount of ferric ion needed to achieve acceptable zinc extractions is prohibitive for downstream zinc recovery from the leach solutions. The process suggested here makes use of less-than-stoichiometric ferric sulphate additions because the ferric ion is regenerated by sparging SO2/O2 mixtures. This regeneration can be effected in-situ in the leach vessel or outside the leach vessel. An example of the application of this new process is presented for a Canadian sphalerite concentrate assaying 60% Zn. The effects of temperature, ferric concentration and ferric ion regeneration are presented. Options to recover zinc from the leach solution are also briefly discussed.

Mitsubishi-Cominco Smelting Co. is a joint venture of Mitsubishi Metal Mining Co. Ltd. (M.M.M.) of Japan and Cominco Ltd. of Canada. The smelter, which is located alongside M.M.M.'s Naoshima copper smelter, was completed in May, 1966 and has a capacity of 36 000 metric tons per year of refined lead. The concentrate feed for the smelter from Pine Point Mines Ltd. is high grade with low impurities; particularly silver, bismuth, antimony, and arsenic, which facilitated a simple plant layout and operation. Concentrate, fluxes, recycle granulated slag and return sinter are drawn from bins by automatic control over weigh belt feeders, sintering is carried out on a 20 m2 Lurgi updraught sintering machine, furnacing in a 3.0 m x 1 ½ m water jacketed blast furnace equipped with an Asarco continuous tapper, refining in four 120 metric ton kettles and casting on a 25 metric ton/hour automatic casting machine. The S@ gas from sintering is cleaned in a high temperature baghouse utilizing glass bags and is then delivered to the M.M.M. copper smelter acid plants. The furnace gases after cleaning in a low temperature baghouse are vented to atmosphere.

To improve efficiency in producing clarified water from mineral and metallurgical processing streams containing suspended particles. Approach Particles suspended in mineral and metallurgical processing streams are filtered out by granular magnesium oxide (MgO) used as the medium in deep bed filters. How It Works MgO is substituted for the silica sand or garnet sand currently used in conventional deep bed filters. These filters presently consist of a 24- to-48-inch-deep layer of either silica sand or mixed media, consisting of a stratified combination of anthracite coal, silica sand, and garnet sand. As waste water containing fine solids is percolated through the granular bed, the suspended particles become attached to the filter grains. When MgO replaces sand as a filter medium, the overall filter capacity is generally increased 50 to 80 percent, and no equipment modifications are necessary for filter operation. MgO is unique because it has a positive surface charge in water while most suspended materials are negative. The attraction of these negatively charged suspended particles to MgO enhances filtering performance. As is necessary for all good media, MgO is insoluble and nontoxic.

The region to which I have the pleasure of calling your attention, though limited in area, is remarkable for the quantity and purity of its mineral deposits, and in these respects it would be difficult to find its equal anywhere. IRON ORES. The red and brown hematites, pipe ore, and semi-magnetites, from which is made in charcoal furnaces the highest quality of iron for car-wheels, extend through the counties of Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski, Wythe, Smyth, Washington, Bland, Tazewell, Russell, Scott, Lee, Floyd, Carroll, and Grayson, Virginia, and run over into Ashe County, North Carolina. One locality of semi-magnetite, in the centre of the great Giles County basin, has in sight, by actual measurement, 50,000 tons of ore, which, according to Prof. Fesquet, contains 69.74 per cent. of iron and no phosphorus. In the great brown-ore belt, which passes through the counties of Montgomery, Pulaski, Wythe, Smyth, and Washington, there is an extraordinary deposit of more than a million tons. A small section of this very long vein, on Cripple Creek, in the County of Wythe, yields an ore which, analyzed by Mr. James Aumann, gave the following results: Metallic iron,........58.15 Water,.........12 96 Alumina,........2.32 Silica,.........1.09 Phosphorus,.. none. At one point towards the western end of Red Land Mountain, in Pulaski County, New River section, I measured a body of ore in this belt which will yield, to a depth of 150 feet, over 8,000,000 tons, and the deposit extends far below the 150 feet measured at the upper part. Again, at Rich Hill, near the mouth of Reed Island Creek, these veins show extraordinary surface development, giving an ore of very great purity. At numerous places, also, in the counties of Giles, Bland, Tazewell, Russell, Scott, Wise, and Lee, these brown and red iron ores are exposed in such vast quantities as to baffle both description and measurement. That of Chestnut Flat, in Giles County, back or west of the Angel's Rest Mountain, is an easily reducible ore, blood-red when crushed, of which there are fully 300,000 tons in sight. AMERICANIZE THE MINING INDUSTRY Americanization is the snaking of American citizens; men and women controlled by the ideals of American citizenship, which have been built up by this country's heritage and its unceasing struggle for freedom and democracy and opportunity. That means, first of all, a necessary understanding of what those ideals are and what they mean for the newly arrived foreigner. It means that every kind of anti-American propaganda must be stamped out; that racial prejudices and the misunder-standings which lead to unrest and disloyalty and make fruitful soil for anti-American propaganda must be overcome. The foreigner must understand. He must understand what we are trying to do here in America; he must understand something, at least, of the kind of government we have built up in our efforts to, accomplish our particular aims; he must understand how lie can fit into it all, not only to help America, but to help himself-to make it possible for hint to get from this country what he carne here seeking. First of all, he must learn the American language. He must be able to talk with his fellow Americans-those who were born here and those who have recently cone, like himself, but from a different land. The most dramatic, the most crucial demonstration of the urgency of the need of all this is given to us right now. At the time when it is most essential for this country to be solidly American, enemy propagandists are winning an occasional success here because they give their message to men and women and boys and girls who do not understand our language and consequently do not understand us. These foreigners, whom the enemy is trying to make disloyal, are really in our army, the big army that is fighting the war for America. Most of them are not among the soldiers who will fight on the battle front, but they are in the lines back of these soldiers. The worker in the shipyards and in the mines is just as important a soldier in this war as the man in the trenches. That has been said over and over, but it cannot be said too often. It is just as vital for that man in the mine to know why we are at war as it is for the soldier. His employer has just as great a responsibility to the country as has any general, and it is the same responsibility.

Peabody Western Coal Co. operates two mines in northern Arizona. The Black Mesa and Kayenta coal mines are unique for several reasons. They both have only two customers: Southern California Edison’s Mohave generating station near Laughlin, NV and the Navajo generating station near Page, AZ. Both mines are close together. Between the two, they ship nearly 11 Mt/a (12 million stpy) of coal. Material is shipped to the power stations in two ways. This first is a 440- km-long (273-mile-long) underground slurry pipeline, the longest in the world. The second is an 11 -km-long (17-mile- long) long conveyor to four storage silos. Product is then shipped by train from the storage silos to the plant sites. Another factor makes these mines unusual. They are both situated in the middle of the 68,795km2 (17 million- acre) Navajo Reservation, home to the Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe members. Nearly 90% of the Black Mesa and Kayentamines’ 850 employees are tribe members. Peabody Western Coal is the United States’ largest private employer of Native Americans.

The power drag scrapers and the slackline cableway excavator have been called "long-range excavators."
