Between June of 1975 and November of 1978 Stateham and Radcliffe of the Denver Research Center of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with officials of the Bear Coal Company of Somerset. Colorado Conducted extensive studies of the roof conditions in the Bear Mine. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the relationship if any between the length of time the roof was left unbolted and the subsequent stability of the roof. Using the comprehensive information available from Stateham and Radcliffe (1), (2), (3), (4) the author has proposed a design for a roof truss installation which might have been used in lieu of some of the bolting in the areas where bad roof was encountered. Historically roof truss installations like bolting patterns have been applied rather than designed. The purpose of the present paper is to demonstrate how with the information available, one might proceed through a semi-rational design. In spite of the very extensive documentation by Stateham and Radcliffe, it was still necessary to make some working assumptions. It is, therefore, not intended that the process here illustrated be used without modification in any other mine nor is there any criticism implied or otherwise, of the way in which Bear Coal Company conducted its operations. The author has never visited the mine in question. This paper is meant to be an encouragement award a more rational use of roof trusses in situations where it is economically and structurally reasonable to do so.

ISOTOPIC tracers have become an important aid in following the progress of chemical processes in the laboratory. It has recently been found possible to utilize a system of naturally existing isotopic tracers to obtain information about the geo- logical history of lead ores. Common lead, such as is found in lead deposits, is a mixture of four stable isotopes having atomic weights 204, 206, 207, and 208. Of these, the last three are identical with the lead isotopes produced as stable end products of the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium: the first, lead-204, is not known to be produced on the surface of the earth by any process. Since uranium and thorium occur in the surface regions of the earth in amounts comparable with lead, and since the half-lives of uranium and thorium isotopes are of the same order as the age of the earth, they produce the radiogenic lead isotopes in amounts com- parable to the amount of nonradiogenic lead present. Every significant exposure of a sample of lead to uranium and thorium will therefore lead to the permanent alteration of the lead isotope ratios in that sample.

THE defect in wire known as "cuppiness" has appeared and disappeared from time to time but the exact cause of its appearance or disappearance has not heretofore been known definitely. This defect is not limited to one particular metal or alloy but seems to be found at various times in all of the materials that are drawn into wire. Fig. 1 represents cuppy wire made from an aluminum alloy and Fig. 2 illustrates copper wire that became cuppy in drawing without intermediate annealing. Differences of opinion are current among the manufacturers of wire and in the literature (see Bibliography at end of paper), some believing that the source of the trouble lies in segregation in the wire rod, oxides, sulfides, slag, etc. ; others that the trouble is created by an unevenness of stress distribution across the section of the wire, usually thought of as being a function of die shape. All of the published work is of a qualitative rather than a quantitative nature. With this in mind, it was deemed advisable to make a study of the shape of the wire-drawing dies, as well as the oxygen content of the copper to be drawn.

One of the most significant developments in the iron industry in recent years has been the discovery and opening of enormous reserves of low-grade ore in eastern and northeastern Cuba. The two principal fields are the Mayari and the Moa, situated on Nipe bag, in the Province of Oriente. A less well-known district of the same type is that of Baracoa, at the east of the island, and another is in Csmaguey Province in central Cuba. In the comprehensive estimates of the iron-ore reserves of the world, published during the summer of 1910 by the International Geological Congress in Sweden,' these Cuban deposits are estimated at about 2,000,000,000 tons. Certain it is that the reserve is a large one. The Spanish-American Iron Co., the Juragua Iron Co. (Bethlehem Steel Co.), the U. S. Steel Corporation, and others have been active in this exploration. The Spanish-American Iron Co. has established a port for the handling of these ores at Felton, has built a railway 16 miles to the ore-fields, and has operied up deposits for steam-shovel mining. Its expenditures have reached an aggregate of about $6,000,000 in preparation for the handling of these ores. Shipment of the ore to Sparrow's Point, Md., has begun and may be expected to rise to a considerable amount in the near future.

In many branches of engineering, there has to be an understanding of the motion of fluids in order to solve problems. Many safety and health problems in the mining industry are typical examples that involve the understanding and analysis of fluid flow, such as explosions, the spread of fires, dispersion of gas and dust, and ventilation patterns. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is concerned with the use of computers to produce information about the ways in which fluids flow in given situations. Until recently CFD has been widely applied to a variety of industrial sectors and increasingly to problems in the health and safety areas. With the arrival of more powerful computers and CFD packages, CFD techniques are no longer practised solely in a research environment, but can be used by engineers in many industrial fields. This paper introduces the basic concepts and general procedures involved in the use of CFD technology. A comparison is given as a guide to the major features of a number of widely used commercial CFD codes. Areas of potential CFD applications are identified in a range of safety and health problems in mining industry. An example is presented to illustrate the use of this technology. It is believed that the exploitation of these areas using CFD approach will contribute significantly to the solution of today's many mine health and safety problems.

The distribution of material passing a screen, or a set of screens, is described by the equation [ ] where p = the probability that a single particle will pass the screen on a single presentation k = number of layers of screen cloth n = distance from head of screen expressed as number of screen openings. This model can be used to predict the performance of conventional screening operations (i.e., k = 1) as well as the so-called "statistical screening" operations. Using this technique, in which multiple identical layers of screen cloth are employed, screening can be carried out at a finer size than is possible with conventional techniques with no loss of separation efficiency.

For mining geologists, the most important trends during 1962 have been the increased concentration of the exploratory activities of American mining companies in the United States and Canada and the greater use of the combined techniques of geology, geophysics and geochemistry in searches over larger areas for wider varieties of metals and minerals. The principal reasons for these changes in approach have been the deterioration of the political-economic climate in many areas of the globe of equal or greater geologic promise and the realization that modern exploration is most efficiently and economically conducted through the use of all available means of detecting ores in areas sufficiently large to raise to a maximum the chances of success. The attitude of certain major U.S. metal-producing companies can be shown by the officially ex- pressed positions of their principal officers. Early in 1962, Clyde E. Weed, Chairman of the Board of Anaconda, remarked that "because of unsettled conditions and disruptive influences in many of the copper-producing areas of the world, it is imperative that domestic copper-producing capacity be improved and made as efficient as possible in order to meet consumer demands at reasonably stable prices." In November, Robert G. Page, President of Phelps Dodge, pointed out that his company is not only concentrating most of its exploratory effort on this continent but is also increasing the number of metals for which it is searching. Frank R. Milliken, President of Kennecott, recently said that "most of our exploration money is going into the northern part of the Western Hemisphere."

Ore and waste cannot always be visually separated. The distinction between ore and waste may need to be made on the basis of blasthole sampling. Hand drawn dig limits or computer-generated contour lines do not account for uncertainty, economics or equipment. Geometric methods for interpreting grade information such as the polygonal or triangulation methods share the same limitations as contouring. Geostatistical techniques exist for the realistic modeling of grade variations and uncertainty. Decision analysis techniques exist for the binary classification of ore, and waste blocks in the presence of this uncertainty. Block-by-block classification is not enough; mining equipment cannot exercise free selection of blocks. There is a need for procedures to determine optimal dig limits that account for (1) the uncertainty in the grades, (2) the economics of risk-qualified decision-making, and (3) the ability of the mining equipment to dig to specific limits. This paper presents a procedure for optimal determination of dig limits that account for these constraints. Simulated annealing (SA) is used with modest computational requirements because the number of variables is relatively small. The solution of the optimization problem is dig limits that maximize profit under multiple constraints. The method is illustrated with different constraints and tested against hand drawn dig limits in a "Dig Limit Challenge," which illustrates the efficacy of the new method.

I DESIRE to say that, owing to the number of papers which have been more or less crowded at this session of the Institute, and the fact that, as one of the Local Committee, I have the distinguished honor to feel somewhat like one of the hosts, I should not tax the patience of members at this late hour, but would have my paper read by title were it in any way possible to do this. But the task I have set myself this evening is to present to the eyes of the members of the Institute certain objects which have occupied more or less of my time during the last eighteen months or two years. The objects I allude to are some of the igneous rocks of this country, which, until quite recently, have been less understood than any others. It will be well known to some of the members that some of the cooled lavas of a previous age of our planet, when not directly coarsely crystalline and granular, were considered and spoken of as " natural glasses," or perfectly uncrystalline, vitreous, or hyaline masses of matter. Among the first results of the use of the microscope was the dispersion of this fallacy. Sir David Brewster, Mr. H. C. Sorby, and William Nichol (the discoverer of the celebrated calcite prism, which bears his name), had, with greater or less success, examined sections of various rocks and minerals, both by transmitted and reflected light, and also in the form of powder. But, until the genius of Vogelsang undertook the subject, these investigations had no permanent value, nor did they constitute an independent line of mineralogical and geological research. Since the close of his labors, by Vogelgang's premature and much-lamented death, the subject has been made one of renewed interest by his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Zirkel, as well as by Rosenbusch, Tschermak, and many others abroad, and at home by the commencement of a systematic study of the traps of Connecticut by Messrs. E. D. Dana and G. W. Hawes, of New Haven, and by the splendid set of described sections of the traps of the West which have been furnished by Zirkel to illustrate Clarence King's report. I had the honor of presenting a large number of thin sections of our traps at the Washington meeting, for the inspection of the mem¬bers, with the aid of a table microscope belonging to the Smithsonian Institution. THERE are two general approaches to the problem of increasing profits from an operation. One is to lower expense; the other is to raise income. Mechanical preparation of coal may be used for either purpose but a prudent consideration of many details must precede any decision lest the results be negative instead of positive. It is quite possible that any net gain will result from a combination of the two. Since mechanically prepared coal invariably is a better product qualitatively than a hand-picked coal from the same mine, it is a reason¬able expectation that the customer will be willing to increase the pro¬ducer's income by paying a higher price. Or there may be the possibility that a combination of mechanical mining plus mechanical cleaning will give a lower over-all production cost for the coal in the railroad car. More likely, there will be found a combination of these two factors. From the customer's point of view, the competitive delivered cost per B.t.u. considered in relation to such incidental factors as dust nuisance, handling properties, ash disposal, and ash fusibility determines what he will pay. In a bulk tonnage product such as coal, freight is a very considerable part of the delivered fuel cost, and obviously freight paid on incombustible ash has no economic attractions.

The Falconbridge ore body, on the southeastern periphery of the Sudbury Basin, is definitely associated with a strong shear zone along the norite greenstone contact, in contrast to the "offset" ore bodies sometimes found in this district. To all practical intent and purpose, the dip is vertical. The ore varies in width from a few inches up to 90 ft., the average width being 15 ft. The present zone of mining operations is 6000 ft. long, 85 per cent of which develops commercial ore. The ground on the whole, and especially in the narrower widths, gives rise to reasonably strong self-supporting backs in most places, but the walls, because of strong post ore faulting on both norite and greenstone contacts, tend to be weak, and, at times, slough to a considerable extent. Obviously. then, with vertical dips, strong backs and weak sloughing walls, flat-back cut-and-fill methods are applicable to the Falconbridge ore body, and at present about 70 per cent of the stoping production is obtained in this way. The general method is described in the following pages. In actual practice, there are continual variations, as the mine staff feels that only in that way can new and better methods be developed. Source of Fill The overburden at the property consists of glacial sands and gravels, varying in depth from 00 at the outcrops, which are few and far between, to 150 ft. This condition makes for high initial cost of shaft sinking, always entailing spiling and concrete, but this extra expense is more than compensated for by the fact that the overburden is the source of very cheap fill.

Noranda's Geco Division is presently developing a comprehensive reclamation plan for closure of its Manitouwadge, Ontario operation, expected late in 1995. As part of a program of progressive rehabilation, the existing 20 year old water treatment plant will be upgraded from a low density to a high density lime neutralization process treating AMD and excess site water. The process, developed by the Noranda Technology Centre, utilizes a two step rather than a single step process to bring the Ph to the required neutralization level, a variation which contributes to improved sludge properties such as higher density and decreased viscosity. This is of particular significance where sludge pumping or storage volumes may present a concerns.

In my former paper (Bans., xii., 410) I quoted the ruling of Judge Hallett, of Colorado, in the "Iron-Smuggler" case, tried before him in June, 1882. Under his charge, the jury in that case found for the defendants, practically declaring that the deposit on the outcrop of which the Iron Silver Mining Company's claim was located was not a " lode," or else that the portion of it within that claim was not the apex. The case was appealed, and the decision of the Supreme Court, given in February, 1886, is reported in 116 U. S. Reports, p. 529. It simply declares that there is nothing in the charge of Judge Hallett to warrant the setting aside the verdict. The definition of a legal lode given in that case, and quoted in my paper at the page above-named, is perhaps the best of several which Judge Hallet has pronounced. That is to say, his earlier definition, that " a lode or vein is a body of mineral, or mineral-bearing rock, within defined boundaries in the general mass of the mountain," is here accompanied with further explanations, which relieve it from the requirement on one hand, that the body shall be continuously ore-bearing if it he only well-defined, and, on the other hand, that the boundaries shall be well-defined if the ore-bearing body be proved to exist. So far as this particular case is concerned, the approval of this ruling by the Supreme Court merely prevents any re-hearing as to the face. The filter cake from the vacuum drum filters of a uranium ore processing plant still contains some leach solution. If the filter cake is not efficiently washed the associated leach solution is lost. Therefore, it is necessary to produce a filter cake that is permeable enough to allow efficient washing. The dewatering characteristics of the solid-liquid system must be improved to obtain flocs with sufficient strength to withstand the suction pressure of the filtration system. To facilitate efficient filtration with minimum cake moisture, studies were undertaken to improve the dewatering characteristics of the cake using different types of flocculants and surfactants. In these studies, flocs were formed with anionic, cationic or nonionic flocculants. The best performance was obtained with a low cationic high molecular weight flocculant. The filtration parameters, namely, capillary suction time, cake resistance, cake permeability and final moisture content of the filter cake, are improved by using a combination of flocculant and nonionic surfactant.

"In the Inco matte separation process, a slow-cooled converter matte is separated into three main discrete mineral phases: chalcocite (Cc), heazlewoodite (Hz) and a Cu-Ni-Fe alloy. After magnetic removal of the alloy, Cc and Hz are separated by flotation at pH>12 with diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. High selectivity is achieved in rougher flotation. However, in later flotation stages such as in the middlings circuit, as oxidation takes place, Hz becomes highly floatable, resulting in a very poor separation between Cc and Hz.Starch and dextrin as Hz depressants were evaluated on the middlings circuit feed and showed no positive impact on Cc/Hz separation selectivity. Ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) extraction showed the existence of abundant surface Cu and Ni ions. The use of triethylene triamine (TETA) or EDTA in flotation did not improve Cc/Hz separation selectivity. Microflotation tests were carried out on pure synthetic Cc and Hz minerals. It was found that Hz did not float in the presence of DPG. However, Hz conditioned with either copper sulfate solution or in contact with Cc floated readily in the presence of DPG. It is concluded that the major reason for Hz flotation in the middlings circuit is due to Cc oxidation releasing Cu ions that adsorb on the Hz surface making it reactive with DPG thus rendering the Hz floatable."

Previous to 1915, zinc refining had not become a general practice among the zinc smelters in the United States. Such refining as had been carried on was confined chiefly to remelting very high-leaded zinc, such as third-draw metal from the retort furnaces, and slab dross, and hard spelter from galvanizing pots. In this remelting operation, the lead and iron were settled out and the refined spelter obtained graded fifth class, ie., Prime Western. Owing to the presence of lead in most zinc ores, the bulk of the spelter produced by direct smelting is of this Prime Western grade. Careful selection of ores of low lead content gave purer grades of spelter, z.e., Brass Special and Intermediate; and smelters which could secure ores carrying practically no lead produced high-grade spelter. Thus, in general, the grade of spelter produced by any smelter was predetermined by the purity of the ore it could obtain. The needs of the warring nations of Europe for enormous quantities of cartridge and other high-grade brass resulted in such a demand for the purer grades of spelter that the available supply of lead-free and low-lead ores could not produce the quantity required. Prime Western grades went begging, so to speak, while high grades sold at times from 5 to 15 c. per pound over the Prime Western market. The great demand, coupled with the wide market margin, which permitted the inherent costs and losses, resulted in the conversion of the lower grades into higher grades by processes of refining. These conditions also accentuated the development and size of the electrolytic plants, which were being worked out at the time this increased demand for pure grade of metal occurred. The electrolytic process, where available, produces a higher grade of spelter from impure ores than does the fire process; a large portion of those impurities in the ore, which by the distillation process would be carried into the spelter, are removed in the leaching of the ores and the purification of the solutions. The refining process, adopted at a number of smelters for the purpose of converting low-grade spelter into grades suitable for bras4 was that of redistillation.

Drilling was not entirely satisfactory in the search for native copper in the Osceola amygdaloid footwall, for oreshoots mined were more continuous than drilling indicated. The Geophysics Dept of Michigan Technological University developed a portable induced polarization drill hole probe with a 3-electrode configuration and a sampling radius of 5 ft ±. A 20 ma current of alternately reversed polarity is pulsed at 3.5 sec intervals and readings are taken every 2 ft. Potential is read during the "on" cycle for resistivity determinations. During the "off" cycle, after 10 ms delay, the 1P potential is sampled for 10 ms and recorded. Resistivity (ohm-ft) and "S" values (mv/v) are plotted on semi-log paper. A lithologic log is plotted based on resistivity and anomalous S values noted. The low resistivity amygdaloid contains sills of high resistivity basalt. Verified by core logs, contacts between amygdaloid and basalt could be picked to ± 0.5 ft from resistivity alone. Lithologic logs of long-steel holes, based on resistivity, then replaced sludge logging. An S value of 30 mv/v was established as the lower limit of diagnostic 1P effects in mineralized amygdaloid and 50 mv/v as a threshold value for ore. Of 914 footwall zones drilled, 315 were probed yielding 203 anomalies. Success increased from 34% for drilling to 72% for drilling and probing. As checked by mining, 46 probe results were 78% correct. Failures were due to the instrument not detecting copper or to the misinterpretation of an anomaly. No false anomalies were found. During the past ten years, the Calumet Div. of Calumet &Hecla, Inc has conducted extensive exploration and mining in the footwall of the Osceola amygdaloid lode in the native copper district in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In an attempt to delineate more clearly the extent and nature of high-grade footwall copper mineralization, 876 diamond drill and long steel holes aggregating slightly more than 47,000 ft have thus far been drilled from the accessible hanging-wall workings in the Osceola No. 6, 13, 14 and 15 shafts. Early in this program it became obvious, through inspection of footwall workings in progress, that due to the erratic and bunchy occurrence of the native copper in the footwall zone, the exploration drilling was failing to outline completely the extent of the oreshoots.
