This paper sets out a number of means by which professionals can reduce or eliminate the risk of professional liability whether as directors, employees, partners, independent consultants or contractors. A relationship between client and professional is commonly cited as an example of a fiduciary relationship: the professional "undertakes or agrees to act for or on behalf of or in the interests of' the client "in the exercise of a power or discretion which will affect the interests of that other person in a legal or practical sense."2 As a fiduciary, a professional must ensure that his or her exercise of power does not result in a position of ascendancy or undue influence over the client. Also, a professional must avoid situations where there is scope for even the perception of potential conflict between his or her professional duty to the client and his or her own Interest.

Open pit mining at Inspiration began in 1947 after 32 years of underground mining. Two separate pits are included in the operations: the Thornton pit, which measures approximately 2500 x 2000 ft, and the Live Oak pit, which is 1500 x 3000 ft. The geographic centers of the two pits are approximately 4000 ft apart, and at the closest point, the two slopes are only 500 ft apart. Today, much of the open pit mining is being carried out in areas which were broken by earlier underground block caving operations; less than 50% of the total material moved has required drilling and blasting. In the solid or virgin areas, the, material ranges only from soft to medium hardness, thus simplifying drilling, blasting and loading operations. As a result, most mining costs and problems have been centered around truck haulage, truck maintenance and the ever-increasing length of the grade haul.

SUMMARY Tyres account for 25-30% of the operating costs of large capacity haul units as used in open-cut mines. Tyre operating costs can be substanti- ally reduced and often contained in real terms by applying knowledge that is now available. This paper describes certain specific advances in tyre management, namely batching, bias adjustment, cumulative plotting and the so-called "pressure-temperature" system of tyre pressure control, originated on the Mt. Newman Mining Company's Newman minesite, and discusses the contribution that each has made to improving tyre management and reducing costs. INTRODUCTION Tyres are a significant cost in mining. INTRODUCTION As the world's supply of near-surface metalliferous ore bodies is depleted, more emphasis must be placed upon mechanized bulk systems of underground mining. In particular, block caving is becoming increasingly important as a method of mining low to moderate grade deposits at depths of somewhat less than 1219 m (4000 ft). 00 ft). The block caving method requires that the ore body be completely undercut, thereby removing its means of support and inducing failure which progresses from the undercut to the ground surface. As the span of the under- cut increases and the weight of the overlying crushed ore body becomes greater, large stresses are induced on slusher and haulage drifts. Stability of these drifts is critical in block caving operations and often proves to be an extremely difficult task (Kendorski, 1976; McWilliams, 1975). Slusher drift maintenance can be costly, often exceeding that of the original support costs. This chapter analyzes the ground support problems of an Arizona block caving mine. The mine presently uses monolithic concrete liners as a support method. Failure of the liners occurs as the undercut approaches, thus initiating a maintenance problem which will continue until the ore body is depleted in that block or panel. To examine this problem, a simple analysis of the stresses induced by the advancing undercut was per- formed. Utilizing a design method developed by Dixon ( 1973, 1974), the calculated stresses were used to deter- mine the minimum thickness required for varying section shapes of unreinforced concrete liners. It is found that the thicknesses required for stable linings are not economic. Recently developed empirical methods of support de- sign are utilized (Barton, 1974; Bieniawski, 1973) and compared to the analytical method. A final discussion of alternative methods of support is given with recommendations for the use of passive or "yielding" support methods. LAKESHORE MINE (GENERAL GEOLOGY) The Lakeshore copper property is located in Pinal County, AZ, approximately 45 km (28 miles) south of Casa Grande. The Lakeshore deposit is a porphyry cop- per similar to others in Arizona. The ore body consists of disseminated chalcopyrite and fracture fillings in quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP), Cretaceous volcanic (KVS), Precambrian diabase, and Mescal limestone. The ore body has been divided into three distinct zones of mineralization which have been termed (South, 1972) the oxide zone, the sulfide zone, and the tactite zone. The oxide zone occurs in the upper portions of the ore body and consists primarily of leached and oxidized quartz monzonite porphyry and Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The sulfide zone underlies the oxide zone and includes all quartz monzonite porphyry and Cretaceous rocks which have not been oxidized. The thickness of the sulfide zone is variable and ranges from about 61 to 122 m (200 to 400 ft). The tactite zone occurs in a series of Paleozoic metasediments consisting of tactite, quartzite, diabase, hornfels, and dikes of quartz monzonite porphyry. The tactite zone is highly variable in thickness and underlies the Cretaceous volcanic and sediments throughout the mine. Together, the tactite and sulfide zones are known as the thick or tall sulfides. The greatest support stability problems occur in mining of the tactite zone and are therefore the subject of the remainder of this chapter. THE Florida hard-rock field extends from Suwanee and Columbia Counties in northwest Florida to south of Croom, Florida, in Hernando County. This area is approximately 100 miles long and varies from 2 to 30 miles in width. Florida hard-rock phosphate was discovered at Hale Springs, about one mile northwest of the town of Dunnellon, Marion County, in the year 1888, by Albertus Voight, who lived within a few hundred yards of the spring. Soon after this discovery there was a great influx of land speculators and wildcat operators into the vicinity of Dunnellon. A few years later phosphate was found in Alachua, Levy, Citrus and Hernando Counties, and a great number of small crude plants were built from Newberry, Alachua County, all the way to Croom, Hernando County. Phosphate was found in many places as "outcrops." Looking for outcrops was the first method used by the early prospectors in searching for deposits. Several years passed before any systematic method of prospecting was used. EARLY MINING The early method of mining hard-rock phosphate was with picks and shovels, wheelbarrows, mules and wagons. The pick-and-shovel method was used altogether until about 1900, when some of the larger operators began to use railroad-type steam shovels of from ½ to 1-yd. capacity. Picks and shovels, with negro labor loading the phosphate ore (called "matrix") into wooden side-dump skip-cars, was continued until about 1907. From the discovery of hard-rock phosphate until approximately 1905, overburden was removed with mules and scrapers. At some places, the overburden was loaded into side-dump skip-cars by negro laborers and the cars were then pulled up an incline with a steam hoisting engine. The maximum depth of overburden that could be economically removed by hand labor, mules and scrapers was approximately 15 feet. About 1905 one of the companies erected a producer-gas powerhouse near Dunnellon and generated its own electricity and about the same time the larger companies began using hydraulic methods for the removal of overburden. From the year 1888 through the year 1939, approximately 75 companies were operating at one time or another in the hard-rock territory, on approximately 500 locations. The hard-rock deposits are more irregular and have higher mining costs than the pebble-rock deposits, therefore they have not been competitive in the domestic market, but because of the higher grade of the hard rock it is in demand for the export trade. Discovery of phosphate outside of the United States has made it increasingly difficult in recent years for the hard-rock companies to survive, so today only three companies are operating. These

The control of mud properties affords two practical means of tnitigating pipe sticking caused by differential pressure: (I) teducing weight and, therefore, differential pressure; and (2) reducing the friction berween the pipe and mud cake. This paper describes investigation of the second of these—the friction between the pipe and the mud cake. Friction between a steel plate and a mud cake, held in contact by a differential pressure, was measured in the laboratory while maintaining a constant area of contact. Experiments were performed to determine how this friction varied with changes in mud composition and with changes in experimental conditions such as the differential pressure, time of contact of plate and mud cake, and filter-cake thickness. It was found that the apparent coefficient of friction, or the "sticking" coeficient, was not a constant; instead, it increased with increased time of contact between plate and mud cake, and with increased barite content of the Mud. The sticking coeficient varied from about 0.05 to 0.2 afer 20 , and eventually reached values of 0.1 to 0.3 after two Hours. Quehracho or ferrochrome lignosulfonate reduced the sticking coefficient at short .set times but did not reduce the maximum value. Carboxy-~t~etlz~lcellulose had no effect on the sticking coeficient. Emulsification of oil in the mud reduced the sticking coefficient. Some oils reduced the sticking coefficient to about one-third of its Value in the oil- free base mud, while other oils reduced it only slightly. Addition of certain surfactants with the oils further reduced the sticking coefficient. Spotting a clean fluid over the stuck plate caused a reduction in sticking coefficient only if the differential presslrrr was reduced, either temporarily or- permanently. INTRODUCTION Often during drilling operations the drill string becomes stuck and cannot be raised, lowered, or rotated. This condition can be brought about by a number of causes, such as sloughing of the hole wall, settling of large particles carried by the mud, accumulation of mud filter cake during long stoppage of circulation and, finally, sticking by pressure of the mud column holding the pipe against the filter cake on the hole wall. This paper is concerned with the last-mentioned phenomenon. Helmick 2nd Longley' in 1957 suggested that a pressure differential from the wellbore to a permeable formation covered with mud cake could hold the drill pipe against the borehole wall with great force. This situation occurs when a portion of the drill string rests against the wall of the borehole, imbedding itself in the filter cake. The area of the drill pipe in contact with filter cake is then sealed from the full hydrostatic pressure of the mud column. The pressure difference between the mud-column pressure and the formation pressure acts on the area of drill pipe in contact with the filter cake to hold the drill pipe against the wall of the borehole. Helmick and Longley also presented laboratory cxperiments which showed that the force required to move steel across a mud cake increased with increasing differential pressure and with the time the stcel and mud cake had been In cuntact. Their data indicated that replacing the bulk mud with oil reduced the force required for movement. Field evidence was rcported that spotting oil over the stuck interval sometimes freed the pipe. Outmans- in 1958 presented a theoretical paper which described the sticking mechanism and explained the increase of sticking force with time with equations derived from consolidation theory. Since publication of these papers, there has been interest in the differential pressure sticking of drill strings, and several mud additives to reduce sticking or special equipment to free stuck pipe have been proposed."" Haden and Welch" have recently reported laboratory evidence showing that the composition of the filter cake influences the force necessary to move steel on the filter cake. There seems no doubt that differential pressure sticking is a real phenomenon and that its severity depends on the magnitude of the pressure differential across the mud cake, the area of contact and the friction between pipe and mud cake. The mud weight required to control a well is determined by the highest formation pressure in the well: hence, the magnitude of the differential pressure opposite normal or subnormal pressure formations cannot bc reduced. The area of contact may be minimized in several ways (control of filter-cake thickness, use of stabilizers and spirally grooved drill collars), but there arc practical limitations which prevent reduction of contact area from becoming a complete solution of the problem. However. the mud composition might bc altered to reduce the friction between pipe and mud cake. This paper presents quantitative measurements of the friction between steel and mud filter cake and shows how the friction varies with mud composition for given experimental conditions.

One of the world's most respected scientists, Dr. Hans A. Bethe (see box) has concluded that if anything can solve the energy crisis, it will be coal and uranium. "It is an illusion to think that we can solve our problem by energy conservation alone. For the next few years, conservation must play a very important role, but at the same time, we must see and develop all our alternative energy sources," he said. In his series of five lectures on the energy crisis, given at the University of Utah while he was visiting professor there during February 1974, Dr. Bethe examined all the existing and newly proposed energy sources. He very quickly ruled out solar power, wind power, and tidal power. Solar power, he said, would be 3% to 4 times more expensive than nuclear energy and would only make sense in tropical areas; wind power, which could at best produce one-tenth as much energy as solar, is "for the birds;" and tidal power, which can be exploited in only a very few coastal locations, is "for the fish."

In order to analyze and quantify distinct environmental properties in the vicinity of sites, the Site-Specific Natural Resources Information System (SARIS) has been developed based on a Geographic Information System (GIS). SARIS is one of the fundamental databases of a collaborative research program aiming at the resource orientated analysis of metallic raw material flows with aluminum and copper serving as exemplary case studies. The spatial database incorporates all present production sites of ore extraction, refining and smelting. Environmental data for each location were derived from global digital survey data covering land cover, soils, morphology, climate, topography and population density. The main application of this database is the characterization of environmental safeguard objects, which may be affected by the activity of concern. This site-specific environmental impact assessment is used to determine the relevance of environmental issues based on the distribution pattern of sites in a global framework. The derived results are used to suggest a tailored indicator approach to measure progress and performance of industrial developments relative to the predetermined site-specific conditions.

Conceptually coal reserve assessment is simple but in practice it presents many problems. These arise from the origin and geological history of coal seams and from the diverse nature of the coal itself. The suitability of a coal for a particular use depends upon its type and so sheer quantity of reserves does not guarantee the adequacy of coal reserves for all requirements. Codes have been formulated to counteract the effects of subjectivity in reserve assessment. The code for calculating and reporting coal reserves published by the Standing Committee on Coalfield Geology of New South Wales has wide acceptance but the Committee itself recognises that it has shortcomings. Currently the Committee is engaged on the commendable but difficult endeavour of formulating a code that will meet the needs of scientific rigour and professional and commercial ethics and that will allow the specification of an assessment method without constraining it. It is generally agreed in the coal industry that the assessment of coal reserves can not conveniently be incorporated into codes formulated for other resources.

Mount Gibson Iron Limited (æMount Gibson IronÆ) has made the difficult transition from a privately owned company with an iron resource to a publicly listed company owning and operating a profitable iron ore mine in the mid-west of Western Australia. The development of the company is described with particular emphasis on the Tallering Peak operations, resources, associated infrastructure and logistical arrangements; the Mt Gibson hematite and magnetite resources and the proposals to develop the magnetite resource as part of an integrated project through to iron pellet production. The concept of tailoring the relatively small ship capacity of the outturn port of Geraldton to appropriately sized inturn ports in China to allow direct delivery of product is discussed. The companyÆs philosophy of building shareholder value by progressive development of its relatively modest resources (compared with the Pilbara) is discussed. In pursuit of long-term business success Mount Gibson Iron has formed symbiotic relationships with strong business partners whose aims and objectives mirror or complement those of Mount Gibson Iron.

One of the most difficult problems in mining operation is how to determine optimum cutoff grades of ores at different periods over the lifespan of the mine that will maximize the net present value (NPV) of the mine. Cutoff grade optimization maximizes the NPV of a project subject to capacity constraints in the mine, mill and the market.. This paper describes the determination of a cutoff grade strategy based on K. Lane’s algorithm adding an iterative optimization factor calculated for every year during the live of the mine to maximize the project’s NPV. The introduced algorithm is a windows based program developed at Virginia Tech which coded in visual-basic within a spreadsheet environment (Excel). The resulting cut-off windows based program is a user-friendly tool which calculates interactively different mining cutoff grade scenarios. The benefits of the methodology are demonstrated using a hypothetical case study. The authors have observed an improvement of the total NPV using this iterative approach using a year by year optimization factor.

The characterisation of the surface area and porosity of opals derived from Tintenbar, a volcanic environment, and Lightning Ridge, a sedimentary environment, using nitrogen gas adsorption at -196¦C is reported. Both opal types were found to have relatively low surface areas and displayed little porosity. The low surface areas observed is indicative of the ability of silica to infill voids and interstices. Thermogravimetric analysis of the samples before and after degassing was carried out to determine the amount of water removed by the degassing process. Negligible difference was found in the water content before and after degassing in the case of the Lightning Ridge sedimentary opal, while the Tintenbar volcanic opal was found to have lost more that 60 per cent of its water during the degassing process. These differences were ascribed to the differences in the silica structure of the opals with the Lightning Ridge opal having a denser cage structure, which traps the molecular water, while a more open structure is postulated for the Tintenbar opal, allowing the water to be relatively easily removed.

INTRODUCTION The Kidd Creek Mine produces a total of 3.6 million tons annually. Geologically the orebody is complex, containing rich values of zinc, copper, silver and lead which are mined and milled as two separate "ore types". Production is mainly from highly mechanized sub-level open stopes of approximately 300,000 tons each. The Mine Engineering Department has developed, and now operates, a computer system that is the subject of this report. It was created specifically to aid the daily work of the mining engineer and has features that are new and possibly unique in the industry. DESIGN OBJECTIVES In 1971 a task force, set up to investigate the subject of computer assistance to mine engineering, specified four design requirements which it felt a successful application had to satisfy. They were:- 1) The computer had to offer a TOTAL SYSTEM that was fully integrated into the routine mine engineering function. 2) The computer had to be directly usable by the current engineering staff, the majority of which had received no formal training in computing.

E Deposit is located at BHP BillitonÆs Area C iron ore operations in the central region of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. It is hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, the lowermost unit of the Archaean to Lower Proterozoic Hamersley Group. Mineralisation at E Deposit East is contained within the Mount Newman Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation and extends into the lower West Angela Member of the overlying Wittenoom Formation. Use of a combination of geological and geophysical techniques has enabled the geological setting of the deposit to be qualified. Interpretation of detailed mine face mapping, downhole geophysics, geochemistry, geological logging and photography has identified D2- related thrust faulting, with substantial south-over-north displacement. Similarly, in-pit mapping at the nearby C Deposit has revealed intense localised D2 deformation, including overturning and thrust faulting. The interpreted structure illustrates that iron ore deposits in the central Hamersley Province can be intensely deformed and require detailed geological investigation utilising technical data from mapping and drilling to enable the creation of robust grade-models for the mining operation.

This branch of metallurgy is rather in its infancy. We have another one at Garfield for the Utah company, which is just designed and construction begun; and from several other points come reports of interesting test work. From the viewpoint of mechanical efficiency, charges should be fully coupled and, upon detonation, should just fail to break the rock in compression. But because mining thrives on its cost-effectiveness rather than its mechan- ical efficiency, the explosive which generates maximum energy per $ should generally be used, even though the mechanical efficiency of this explosive's detonation products may be sub- optimum. Wherever possible, each charge should have a length:diameter ratio of about 20 or more and should shoot to a concavely biplanar free face that is both parallel and reasonably close to the blasthole. Success in obtaining parallel effective faces often demands the drilling of angled blastholes and, hence, will require intensified research and development efforts by drilling manufacturers, especially where hard strong rocks are encountered. Blastholes should be drilled on equilateral triangular grids and fired in a Vl or shallower V-type sequence using inter-row delays which ensure that good pro- gressive relief of burden is achieved. The conventional method of calculating Se/Be values (on the basis of planar effective faces) is often invalid.

A novel system has been developed using computer imaging techniques to make on-line measurements of material on a moving conveyor. Meas- urements of the mass or volume of conveyor materials are important in large open pit mining operations such as those operated by the State Elec- tricity Commission of Victoria (SECV). Such on-line measurements can be used for monitoring and controlling the production and transport of coal or overburden, and to assist in maintaining production levels. This paper describes a conveyor burden volume measurement system which is currently under development at the Research and Development Department of the SECV and although targeted initially for use in the Commission's open cut mines, the system is suitable for use on any open conveyor system. A basic developmental system has been built to demon- strate the viability of the technique used and further work on the system is planned. The measurement technique and the major components which have been developed as part of the system are described, some comparisons are drawn with other existing measurement systems and potential errors and future development are discussed.

There is considerable economic incentive to increase the angle of open pit walls so as to reduce the total volume of waste to be moved to gain access to an orebody. However, a number of slope failures has increased the awareness of mine operators to the potential and consequences of slope failure. Sophisticated methods for the analysis of slope stability have been developed but they rely on an understanding of the appropriate parameters to describe the structural properties of the slope materials. Unfortunately, these properties change with time.The excavation of an open pit mine removes the constraint and weight of the overlying material and allows the newly formed slope to release previously locked in stress. The release of this stress allows the opening of joints and leads to a significant reduction in bulk modulus. The rock mass is also further affected by damage from nearby blasts. Such damage is cumulative and further reduces the modulus of the near surface material and weakens the bonds between structural elements in the slope.
