The Lady Loretta lead-zinc-silver mineral isation of north-west Queensland was discovered first by Placer geologists in 1968 as a result of a geochemical soil survey. The stratigraphic position, mineralisation and rock associations of the deposit are very similar to those of the Mount Isa lead-zinc-silver orebodies. Aspects of the exploration history, geo- chemistry and structural geology of the Lady Loretta deposit, are discussed. A geometric model of the Ore Horizon is given.

The need for mechanized drilling to decrease mining costs has resulted in the development of the jumbo from column-and-bar drill by carriages to hydraulically controlled jib jumbos. Resultant savings from use of improved jumbos have been high enough usually to retire the machinery investment within a year. The jib jumbo unit has been and applied successfully to development and preparation programs and flat-bedded stopes, and an even wider field is forecast for its use.

Mining is a necessary part of our modern lifestyle. However, mining can cause damage and pollution of the environment and therefore we must manage our resources wisely accounting for the physical, biological and social environments. Contrary to the view of some people not conversant with the facts mining has in many cases improved the environment. This paper described how two sand dune systems that were unstable prior to mining have been stabilised by revegetation after mining.

Electronic circuits were developed and successfully utilized to record, store, and continuously transmit to a remote station physical information relating to the impacts of pebbles on the shell liners of an industrial pebble mill, and of electrical conduction in the mineral pulp. The information was obtained by the instrumentation of some of the bolts that are used to clamp the liner blocks and litter bars to the mill shell. The features associated with the impact and conduction signals have been interpreted, and it is shown that such signals can lead to continuous measurements of the volume of the load in an industrial mill. Information is given regarding the angular distribution of direct impacts of the pebbles onto the shell liners, the power required to promote impacts, the amount of material in flight, the impact velocity, and the average number of direct impacts with the shell liner that any given pebble undergoes in unit time in the given mill.

Those coal mining and preparation engineers and operators who read this article will probably be most concerned with those parts which deal with the applied aspects of coal petrology in the fields of mining and technology. Actually the two categories overlap to such a degree that they are essentially one. The article appears to suggest that there are two points of veiw in the field of applied coal petrology. From one viewpoint the interest is in the attributes of the various macerals (Fig. 4)-vitrinite, exinite, and inertinite-in terms of utilization (when the coal is burned, coked, gasified, hydrogenated, etc.). From the other point of view, assuming that the macerals do possess individuality in behavior, interest attaches to the possibility that coal of a particular type (maceral composition) can be prepared by discriminating methods of preparation and blending. Most of the 29 items listed for mining and technology can be assigned to one or the other of these two categories.

Conventional physico-chemical treatment methods, either hydroxide or sulfide precipitation, can hardly achieve a high removal of selenium from the liquid effluents which can be generated in some metallurgical operations. In weak acid solutions, selenium exists mainly as anionic species (selenite Se03-2 and selenate SeCV2) which, therefore, cannot precipitate as metal hydroxide or metal sulfide compounds. At the same time, neither selenite nor selenate form stable precipitates with the common cations (Ca, Mg, Fe, etc.) that are typically used in water treatment. At Noranda Inc., CEZinc Division in Valleyfield, Canada, the introduction of new discharge requirements for effluent toxicity initiated a R&D program which resulted in the full-scale implementation of a new treatment method for selenium removal. The goal of this paper is to present this new method which is now being patented by CEZinc. The process chemistry will be presented along with pilot-scale developments and full-scale operational results.

B. S. Crocker (Screened Ore Used for Fine Grinding at Lake Shore Mines, P. 499) was born in Toronto, Ont. and attended Saint Andrews College and University of Toronto. He received a B.A. and M.A. degree. He was graduated with honors and received a fellowship in metallurgy. Mr. Crocker did post-graduate research at University of Toronto from 1933 to 1934. He was employed by Beattie Gold Mines in 1933. He did research in milling at Lake Shore Mines from 1934 to 1936 and from 1936 to 1940 was head of experiment laboratory. At the present time he is mill superintendent with Lake Shore Mines at Kirkland Lake, Ont., Canada. Grinding, cyanidation, flotation and roasting are of special interest to him. He is a member of AIME. Mr. Crocker has presented several papers before C.I.M.M. and also holds membership in this society as well as Professional Engineers of Ontario. Skiing, yacht racing and photography are his favorite hobbies.

Many problems associated with acid mine drainage (AMD) are caused by the complex way molecular oxygen (O2) oxidizes reduced matter at surface temperatures. In aqueous solution, O2 kinetically "prefers" to go through the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an intermediate. Being innately unstable, H2O2 is quickly decomposed back to water and oxygen in the presence of dissolved Fe and Mn, both catalysts for the decomposition. Direct addition of H2O2 to AMD produced similar results. Ozone (O3) is a much faster and stronger oxidizer than either O2 or H2O2. In the laboratory, O3 rapidly precipitated Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, Pb, and Ag even in acidic solutions. The experiments indicate that AMD can probably be processed with ozone and metal oxides/hydroxide recovered in flow systems using only septic-tank-size reactors and small sedimentation ponds.

The Tregoora Gold Project is centred around the old Mitchell River Antimony Field located 100 kilometres west-northwest of Cairns, North Queensland. The project is currently the subject of a joint venture between Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. and Hawk Investments Limited.Historical BackgroundThe Tregoora area was first prospected for antimony and gold around 1890. During the periods 1905 to 1914 and 1937 and 1944 approximately 100 tonnes of antimony and an unknown quantity of gold were won from a number of small mines the principal one being the "Retina". A strong increase in the demand for antimony in the early 1970's resulted in renewed exploration activity in the region and the re-development of the Retina Mine. Despite the intermittent interest in the region for antimony it was not until 1984 that the potential of the area for hosting gold resources was realised with the delineation by Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. of a significant gold deposit now referred to as the Black Knight.

Oaky Creek Coal Pty Ltd. currently mines high quality coking coal from both underground and open cut operations at its Oaky Creek Mine. Coal is transported by rail to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal south of Mackay and to the Gladstone Coal Terminal. Oaky No.1 Underground Mine, Open Cut and Highwall Mine have concentrated on seams from the German Creek Formation, one of the major productive coal measure formations in the Bowen Basin Coalfields. DURING the winter of 1877-78 the Glendon Iron Company, by the advice of the superintendent, Mr. Frank Firmstone, decided to make the experiment of exploding a heavy blast of gunpowder in their limestone quarry at Cedar Hill, Palmer Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The amount of limestone used in the five furnaces of the company is about 60,000 tons per annum, and it was thought that with successful results; this entire amount or more would be thrown down at a single operation, disintegrating the mass to a greater or less extent, and obviating the necessity of blasting and boring the rock from the face of the cliff, both of which operations are slow, and therefore, costly. The rock at the quarry is Auroral limestone, or No. 2 of the old Survey. No fossils have ever been found in the quarry, nor in the immediate vicinity. The nature of the rock varies considerably in

The Utah Development Company Research and Development Laboratory has embarked upon a programme of optimisation of the company's coal preparation plants. This goal is being accomplished in a three-fold manner - use of pilot plant equipment for optimisation and modelling of the various unit operations, evaluation or development of on-stream ash analysis for process control, and evaluation or development of alternative processes. In each of these areas, digital data acquisition- and at a later stage, process control feedback, is being extensively utilised, based largely upon the use of the HP85 and HP9915 desktop computers. A variety of input/output configurations such as HPIB, BCD, GPIO are used, and at times supplemented by microprocessors such as the Intel 80/05 to assist in data transfer. This paper will discuss a number of specific projects, especially in relation to the manner in which the variables are monitored, and the data later retrieved and analysed.

INTRODUCTION Economists have long expressed suspicion of the economic theory of natural resource exhaustion, even in writing articles which have contributed to it (1). Indeed, the gap which separates the pure theory from practical management seems unusually wide. It is doubtful whether a mine manager could possibly know enough about the relevant parameters of his mine to steer it along the optimal paths described by the theorists (2). Nevertheless, enough faith in the theory remains that mine managers are suspected of being a separate breed whose behavior must be studied in special courses using specialized text-books, collections of readings, and journals (3). The implied hypothesis, that mines and natural resource firms are managed differently than other firms, is the subject of this paper. In the next section the theory is developed and analyzed. In section III, I discuss the implications of the statistical results that have been obtained. Finally, conclusions are reserved for section IV. THE MODEL A key difference between the traditional theory of natural resource production and that of other forms lies in the set of variables which ire assumed to jointly determine the quantity of output the firm will produce. The portal is the primary access through which most if not all tunnel construction is carried out and it is the lifeline of the tunnel. Planning considerations include depth of cover, slope stability, economics of open cut versus shaft access, environmental impact, and contractor staging area. Critical aspects of planning, investigation, design, and construction of portals are considered by discussing portal design and portal failure case histories.

Evidence is presented that copper-base solid solutions of different solutes having equal grain sizes, no preferred crystal-lographic orientation, equal electron-atom ratios, and, within experimental scatter, identical initial yield strengths, need not have identical stress-strain curves at strains larger than about 0.04. The stress-strain behavior is rationalized in terms of the proposed Suzuki chemical interaction between solute atoms and extended dislocations using what is thought to be a somewhat different means of representing stress-strain data. ALTHOUGH the effect: of alloying element upon the strength characteristics of sold solutions is a subject which has received considerable attention in the past, the exact relationships between the common deformation parameters and certain common variables are not really known in some cases. As a result some of the experiments reported in the literature in which these variables are inadequately controlled lose some of their persuasion regarding underlying principles. Nonetheless, facts are known which bear pointing up: When the true stress, a, and true plastic strain, E, of tensile deformatic~n are plotted on a double logarithmic coordinate system, one may observe a straight-line relationship at strains greater than 0.02. The form of the curve in the linear region is given by a = Ken! where a represents true stress, E, true strain, and K and tn, constants. If the relationship holds, K and m define the flow characteristics of the material being tested. m and K, however, may vary with other parameters. Hollomon found that in a-brass, m is influenced by grain size. French and HibbardZ found in alloys of copper that inverse relationships existed between m and 1) the solute concentration for a given solute, 2) the 0.01 yield strength, and 3) the constantK. Lacy and Gensamer3 observed (du/d~) (= U/Em) to increase with increasing values of K in systems of alloyed ferrites (although with considerable scatter of data which may be attributed to uncontrolled grain size). Brick, Martin, and Angier* deduced in copper-base alloys a straight-line relationship (with some scatter) between the change in the Dph number due to solid-solution strengthening and the change in the Dph number due to work hardening which suggested that copper-base alloys having equal yield strengths might have identical stress-strain curves in the plastic flow regions. French and HibbardZ concluded that the yield strength of copper-base solid solutions is the proper basis for comparing the effects of solute elements. Also, Allen, Schofield, and ate' showed that, within their experimental variation, copper-base alloys of zinc, gallium, germanium, and arsenic having the same electron-atom ratios have the same true-stress true-plastic strain curves. Dorn, Pietrokowsky, and ~ietz' also found that with aluminum-base alloys the stress-strain curves in the flow regions are approximately the same if "equivalent" concentrations of alloying elements are used. Solute valence and lattice parameter distortion were the parameters used to determine equivalency. The present report describes an investigation in which an attempt was made to obtain copper-base solid-solution alloys of four solute elements having within close tolerances equal grain sizes and yield strengths, and to see if the level of yield strength does indeed define the flow curve regardless of solute type. During analysis of the data certain unexpected features of the stress-strain curves became apparent which gave rise to some speculation and are discussed at length in the paragraphs that follow. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloy Preparation—Using the data of French and HibbardZ as a first approximation, four different binary copper-base alioys were designed so as to have the same yield strength. In addition, other alloys were prepared in which the solute aoncentrations varied slightly from those calculated above so as to span a range of yield strengths, see Table L The yield strengths of all alloys prepared except the copper-tin alloys were subsequently found to Lie fairly close to one another. The copper used in the alloys was produced by the American Smelting and Refining Co. and was of very high purity (99.999 pct). The alloy additions and their initial purities are as follows:

Change of Meeting from Birmingham to Chattanooga. In consequence of the disturbed conditions attending a long¬continued labor strike in Alabama, the meeting of the Institute was changed from Birmingham, Ala., to Chattanooga, Tenn., where it will. begin on Thursday evening, Oct. 1, 1908. Information. of this change bad been sent to the newspapers through the Associated Press, and by circular to all members, when news was received of the sudden and unexpected termination of the strike referred to. It was, unfortunately, too late to change once more the arrangements for the meeting. But it is hoped that the cordial invitation of the citizens of ,Birmingham may be renewed and accepted at a future time, not too remote. Office Facilities for Visiting Members. A separate room in the suite occupied by the American Institute of Mining Engineers on the ninth floor of the United Engineering Society Building, has been equipped with furniture and telephone extension for the temporary use of members of the Institute or of sister societies, or visitors suitably accredited. SME-AIME's Planning Committee established Working Party No. 22 in September 1974. Its charge was to: "Determine and take necessary actions to have Mining Engineering included among the disciplines on the National Professional Engineering Examinations." The first national examinations in "Mining/Minerals Engineering" will be given during April 1979, in states that request questions from the National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE), Seneca, S.C. From a survey by NCEE, mining engineering is recognized as a specialty in professional engineering registration in 25 states. In addition, 19 states give examinations in mining engineering. At press time, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia have indicated they will use the April 1979 exam.
