This paper describes a generic technology for modeling in real time the various operations of surface mines. Based on various sensor fusion techniques and high-speed network, a virtual reality model of a mine capable of representing not only static infrastructures but also mobile equipment such as trucks and excavators is created. The modeling technique deal with a wide range of sensors such as survey data, satellite pictures, ore concentration, machine condition indicators, video, sound, real-time GPS locator, range sensor, etc. The model created allows for every piece of information to be displayed in context allowing for a better temporal and spatial correlation of events by mine operators, planners, and supervisors. Syncrude, a Canadian mining company located in northern Alberta, is planning to use this technology, not only to understand oil sands mining processes better, but also to give decision-makers better access to the timely, accurate information from the field that they need to make informed decisions.

Six tests were made by the Alaska Station of the Bureau of Mines on a sample of black sand delivered to the station by Messrs. James, Eagan & Griffen from Fairbanks Creek, Fairbanks mining district, Territory of Alaska, to devise a method of recovering the gold content. More than 90 per cent of this black sand consisted of magnetite and garnet which can be separated magnetically. The Station has no equipment for magnetic separation other than an electromagnet similar to the one used by Day and Richards, (Day, D.T., and Richards, R.H., Investigations of Black Sands from Placer Mines, U. S. Geol. Survey, Bull. 285, 1906, pp. 150-163), which can only be used satisfactorily on small samples. To treat the entire lot of black sand with this machine would have been impracticable. Therefore only a small part of the sand was so treated, the rest being divided into five lots in order to obtain comparative results from other methods of treatment.

There has been a persistent need to forecast roof falls so that miner's exposure to hazardous underground environments can be minimized. Several monitoring techniques have been developed and are used today with varying levels of acceptance in the mining industry. This paper examines the potential for monitoring microseismic emissions activity as a means of forecasting roof falls. The use of this activity to forecast roof falls has drawn only limited attention, resulting in a lack of published field performance data. This deficiency is being partially addressed by analyzing data obtained during longwall mining at Moonee Colliery in 1998. The Moonee data base contains a wealth of information concerning roof fall forecast parameters and the seismic alarm criteria used to develop these forecasts. Four seismic alarm criteria were developed and used by Moonee with varying degrees of success. Roof falls were forecasted 73% of the time with average forecast times of 54 minutes. Ninety percent of the predicted roof falls had a warning time, i.e., the time between warning and roof fall event, of greater than 1 minute. The fraction of forecasted roof falls decayed logarithmically as a function of warning time, until only 20% of events were predicted more than 100 minutes prior to roof falls. False alarms occurred in 50% of the warnings. Many of the false alarms were quickly followed by a cessation in mining which could have temporarily halted the on-going failure process. If mining had continued immediately after the false alarms, a roof fall may have occurred soon after. The microseismic activity collected .from Moonee Colliery demonstrates that techniques to forecast roof rock instabilities in underground mines are possible.

When oil is takcn from a subsurface structure it is generally accompanied by gas. The gas thus produced represents the 1ighter hydrocarbons present in the original petroleurn accurnulation, which arc, insoluble at the reduced pressures created around a well when it is producing. In some cases the gas accompanying the oil may come from a gas-bearing stratum not in immediate contact with the oil. The amount of gas from the formation accompanying each barrel of oil is called the natural gas factor. Energy Causing Well to Flow The force causing the flow of fluid into a well when it is drilled into an oil-bearing structure is the pressure differential between the well bore and the formation. A pressure differential between the formation and the well may be set up in three different ways, as follows: (1) pressure due to gas in solution or in contact with the oil, (2) hydrostatic pressure due to water in contact with the oil (it may be either bottom or edge water); (3) pressure difference due to forcc of gravity. The greatest source of energy for producing oil from most oil fields, and the one over which the greatest control can be exerted, is the poten-tial energy in the gas under pressure in the formation. In any pool there is but a definite amount of gas available. Part of this gas may be in solution and a part in contact with oil. The amount of gas in solution in each bard of oil depends on the pressure and temperature in the formation and the characteristics of the oil. Whether the gas is in solution or in contact with the oil it is necessary to use the energy it, contains as efficiently as possible in order to obtain the greatest ultimate recovery from the pool. Bush1 states: Gas being the most efficient aid in moving the oil, it is important to prevent more of it from escaping than is necessary to remove the maximum amount of oil from the sands. The conservation of this energy is far more important to the producer of oil than his returns from sales of gas to distributing companies. Mr. Chairman, Members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute: It seems particularly appropriate that we come at this time to make a report on a phase of mechanical, mining of coal which had its birth in this region and was cradled and nurtured here until it assumed a lusty manhood that has made its presence felt in every coal field in this country and in foreign fields as well. More than twenty years ago shaker conveyors were introduced into the states covered by your Institute, and immediately, forward looking men saw that here were possibilities for the operator's dream of a continuous flow of coal from face to tipple, if this latest device could be made self-loading. The skill and ingenuity of men in the Rock Springs district quickly brought this about and in but a few short years .more coal was being loaded by Duckbills in this field than by any other means. Not content with this outstanding success, still other men dreamed of having this same Duckbill moved across the face under its own power, and so this same district produced the first power swing Duckbill.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Boone County, W. Va., as determined by the Bureau of Mines. It is one of a series describing the coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 6.3 million tons of coal was produced in Boone County, W. Va., in 1959, of which almost 5.5 million tons was mechanically cleaned in eight preparation plants. On December 31, 1959, it was estimated that almost 8 billion tons of coal remained in the county in beds 24 inches or more in thickness. Thirteen samples were collected from nine coalbeds and washability tests were made on these samples.

AT THE beginning of October, the outstanding feature in the world's affairs was the Turkish question. The Turks, victorious over the Greeks, repudiated the treaty of Sévres with the Allies and demanded their reestablishment at Con-stantinople and in Thrace. The British resisted, but deserted by the French and Italians, at a military conference at Mudania the Turks obtained about everything that they wanted. Great Britain suffered a loss of prestige that may bear evil fruit in the future. The possession of the Dardanelles by the Turks pro-duced the ruin of Russia and Rumania in the great war, prolonged it two years and made it necessary for America to go in. Disruption of the entente puts the Turks back where they were. In America a strong and spontaneous reaction developed against this, not for any diplomatic reasons, but purely out of the sentiment that the atrocious Turks should be confined to Anatolia. Some strong leadership would have aligned the United States with Great Britain in this matter. As it is, the French have had their way but have alienated much of their American friendship. The temporary composition of Turkish affairs at the Mudania conference had momentous consequences. The Greeks, having expelled King Constantine, in their distress and despair reverted to the guidance of Venizelos. Evacuation of the Grecian military forces and the entire Grecian population from Eastern Thrace began, the people not venturing to remain there. From all accounts their withdrawal, attended by great hardships, was reminiscent of folk movements in the Middle Ages. The vanguard of the Angora Govern-ment set foot in Constantinople, marking the return of the Turks to Europe, while the Allied forces remain-ing there temporarily stood in chagrin. In Great Britain an important element of the Con-servatives withdrew their support from the Coalition Government, thus leading to the resignation of Lloyd George, the installation of Andrew Bonar Law as premier and a general election with a tri-party contest among the Conservatives, Liberals and Labor, called for Nov. 15. Civil war continued in Ireland, but attention was diverted from it by the more important events in the Near East.

The general term "tar sand" refers to sand that contains varying amounts of dense, viscous petroleum. Tar sand deposits have been found throughout the world, often in the same geographical area as conventional petroleum. The largest one by far is known as the Athabasca Tar Sands, in the province of Alberta, Canada. Actually a group of three deposits, these particular sands underlie an aggregate area of more than 12,000 sq miles. Current estimates place the contained raw petroleum at about 700 billion bbl; and via currently available technology, the amount of recoverable synthetic oil may be as much as 300 billion bbl-which is roughly equivalent to five times the combined US and Canadian total crude oil reserves. With the ever-widening gap between energy supply and demand, mining and petroleum companies are now evaluating all possible energy resources-both developed and underdeveloped-and, certainly, the Athabasca Tar Sand deposit is one of the more important ones to merit such attention. The first section in ME deals with the geology and historical developments; the other four sections, with mining methods, extraction technology, economics, and outlook.

Numerous mine fires have resulted in high death tolls and considerable finan¬cial loss during the history of coal mining. In most instances the death toll and financial loss were greater because of inadequate fire-fighting facilities. The information in this report is presented in the hope it may serves as a guide in the selection, placement, and care of fire-protection systems in similar coal mines. The adequacy of fire protection varies according to size of operation, employment, and production. When fires occur on the surface or underground, measures must be applied quickly to prevent incipient fires from spreading. The record of coal-mine fires shows that, in many instances, facilities for combating fires were very meager or were absent. It would be virtually impossible to establish and maintain all the necessary facili¬ties that may be needed to extinguish widespread mine fires, but it is believed that the coal industry can ill afford less than the minimum required by other industries where the time element and avenues of escape are much more favorable.

Spatial modelling has been used to determine potential locations of granite-related nickel skarn mineralisation throughout eastern Australia. It is believed that during granite intrusion, fluid can leach nickel from nearby mafic lithologies and combine with sulfur to form nickel sulfides. Currently exploration for this style of deposit has been limited to the region around the Avebury Deposit in western Tasmania. As the lithologies near Avebury are not unique it is feasible that similar deposits could exist elsewhere in Australia. The weights of evidence spatial data modelling technique was used to evaluate the wealth of geological data available over eastern Australia and included known economic deposits as training data to weight the themes of the model. These weighted themes were combined to create a prospectivity map showing areas favourable for granite-related nickel deposits. Several regions were identified by the model to have good potential to host nickel mineralisation similar to the Avebury deposit. These include areas located throughout New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, the Tasman District of New Zealand and, in particular, the Rockhampton region of eastern Queensland. For underground openings, many factors can cause roof failure and thus roof falls. The most common factors related to Mother Nature are weak roof lithology, geological structures, and an abnormal in-situ stress field. Theoretically, any underground opening can be successfully supported under any geological and mining conditions if the opening width is limited and the roof supporting system is well designed. However, roof control cost must be taken into account. In practice, to minimize the roof control cost, different roof control plans have to be considered to take care of the uncertainty or variation in geological and mining conditions. For most underground mines, it is unsafe or economically unrealistic to use one fixed roof control plan for the entire mine. Therefore, local, abnormal geological and mining conditions must be identified and a site- or area-specific roof control plan must be employed. This study tries to identify the major factors that have significant impact on entry roof stability by analyzing the historical roof fall data at Rofomex mine. Finally, the appropriate roof control plans or roof bolting systems for different geological and mining conditions are recommended.

Digital photography combined with three dimensional models of topography, mining operations and restoration plans can lead to extremely realistic images and animations of the current and future states of a mine or quarry. The amount of work and the time required for the successful modeling of a mine and its restoration plan are surprisingly low nowadays. All this means that the visual impact of mining and quarrying operations can be easily assessed using common computer hardware and some dedicated software packages. LAVA Mining and Quarrying SA is a company committed to strive continuously for the highest possible environment protection at the company?s quarries. The pozzolanic rock quarry located at Xylokeratia is one of the company?s quarries on the island of Milos and the subject of the study presented in this paper. A thorough restoration plan of the Xylokeratia quarry is being completed by the company. For its purposes, a complete visual impact assessment study was performed at the Department of Geotechnology and Environmental Engineering of the Technological Education Institute of Western Macedonia. The procedures used in this study and the produced visual results are presented in this paper.

In previous papers,' the author has reported the results of experiments on the straining in tension of a single-crystal test piece, about 0.6 in. long, of vacuum-melted electrolytic iron containing 1.8 per cent. of silicon. The crystal was originally in the "as cast" condition, and was stressed slowly along a tetragonal axis so that slipping along conjugate gliding planes finally transformed the original cylindrical portion into a pair of fracture wedges. One of these fracture wedges was sectioned along the stress axis in a plane at right angles to the edge of the wedge. A metallographic study of this plane of section led to the conclusion that slip had taken place in the (111) direction along (112) planes making a V shape with the stress axis. The present paper describes the results of scratch-hardness tests conducted on the same section, in order to determine the distribution of strain hardness therein, followed by annealing, and considers the resulting variations in hardness. These observations supplement those made by Krivobok2 on similar material reduced 25 per cent. by hammering (i. e., by impact) in the cold. In order to investigate ageing effects, two small crystals of the same alloy were also tested. The Specimens Employed The principal specimen, A, was prepared for the metallographic examination leading to the determination of the slip planes of the crystal. Therefore the work described in this paper was conducted on metal which had been repeatedly etched and had been allowed to rest for about 30 months after straining. It consisted of a section of the fracture wedge and contiguous unstrained head of the test piece taken along a tetragonal axis parallel to the direction of stressing, the plane of section originally being not far removed from the (011). The mineral sands deposit of Australia pose a number of unique, and quite unusual problems for the explorationist. Most concentrations of heavy minerals have been found in the unconsolidated sediments of the east and west coasts. Mineral sands mines open larger areas per tonne of concentrate than most other mines. This is because of the shallow depth of the sands containing the heavy mineral concentrations. Obtaining tenure can, by mining industry norms, be a massive operation due to the large areas to be examined and, particularly on the east coast, the large number of land holders encountered. A commercial development can still emanate from anything ranging from a small high grade body to a massive low grade deposit, the prices currently being obtained for rutile, zircon, ilmenite and monazite, although still modest when the remarkable properties and applications of these minerals are considered, is nevertheless attractive when compared to the prices being obtained for the base metals with the exception of gold. The current interest in the location and definition of new reserves of heavy minerals reflects this relative price attractiveness. The discovery of heavy mineral concentrates does not necessarily ensure the early establishment of a mine. Because of the cyclical nature of market prices, the average returns likely over the life of the mine permit the employment of only relatively simple, low cost, mining, concentration, and separation processes. If difficult mining conditions are encountered or the removal of small contaminants by complex metallurgical processes are required, then higher market prices must be obtained. Until the market is prepared to pay more for the commodities so produced, the resource will not be economic and lower cost reserves will be mined in preference. The Australian mineral sands industry has seen many closed mines because of past failures to properly assess the data base collected during the exploration and development phases of the failed projects.

The present study aims at the reduction of the dolomitic limestone by the addition of lime added with high MgO (magnesium oxide) content in the sintering process. To verify the feasibility of the use of additive lime as an alternative source of magnesium oxide, sintering tests were carried out at pot grate with different percentages of additive lime addition and with proportional reduction of the calcite lime dosage, evaluating the effects on the sintering process. The results showed that the additive lime is a good source of MgO for consumption in the sintering process of iron ore.

In contrast to pyrometallurgy's six thousand year history in the production of metals, that of hydrometallurgy is of relatively recent origin. The earliest reference to it at all was in the 16th century, with the first applications to copper in the 17th and 18th. In the 19th century, increased demands for pure metal resulted in development of electrolytic refining, and early in this century electrowinning. The rapid growth in wpper production in the present century, paricularly in the United States and Chile, stimulated the development of new technology for leaching, and for the recovery of copper from leach solutions. Solvent extraction has become a major factor during the past quarter century by permitting novel leaching technology which produces dilute or complex solutions. In addition, solvents other than sulphuric acid, and chemical methods for precipitating copper metal are now of increasing interest. These are trends which should grow in importance in the future with the need to process lower grade and more complex materials. The evolution of copper hydrometallurgy is reviewed briefly and key factors in recent major developments are presented with details of specific operations and with trends for the future indicated. The relative importance of copper hydrometallurgy is compared to that of pyrometallurgy in the light of probable changes in ore supplies and character.

The four papers making up this symposum have been prepared especially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathematical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismograph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as much as possible of the technical aspests of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. Using a tool and using its product are two different things. One does not use an automatic screw-threading machine when he buys a box of screws at the hardware store. Neither does the geologist

The primary source of fugitive gas emissions in most copper smelters are the Peirce Smith converter operations. The modem trend is towards installation of secondary gas collection systems which are intended to collect fugitive gases from charging, standby, and skimming operations. These have been installed with varying degrees of success. Often, the major source of emissions from the converter area is leakage of process gas from the primary hoods when the converter is blowing. This gas is typically collected by the secondary system and discharged to atmosphere or scrubbed with an alkaline agent. Those smelters considering installation of secondary hoods or scrubbing of gases from secondary systems should first address the issue of gas leakage from the primary hoods. Improving the primary hood gas collection efficiency will often be more cost effective than installing secondary hooding. In the case of secondary gas scrubbing, it will significantly reduce the reagent consumption and operating cost of the scrubbing system. This paper examines the parameters that determine whether or not a primary hood will effectively collect process gases without leakage and demonstrates, using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the effects of variations in these parameters on the overall performance of the hood. It also looks at the application of CFD techniques in the design of secondary hoods and presents a summary of measured emissions from converter buildings.
