PRACTICALLY all explosives may be classified as those that burn and those that detonate. Explosives of the first class include .black blasting and smokeless powder and are broadly known as low explosives, or propellants, because they merely burn and do that comparatively slowly. Their action is as if some power behind the projectile or other material were exerting a shoving or pushing action. The high, or detonating, explosives produce a smashing or shattering effect upon the material. In using military- explosives of the propellant class, the breach of the gun, or cannon, is proportioned to hold the pressure, so that the projectile will be blown out. Exactly the reverse is true in commercial work; then it is the "breach" or the hole that is to be broken. The projectile and the explosive are therefore chosen that will rupture the largest "breach" possible. With the high explosives, it is easy to break out the breach (that is why they are of no value as military propellants)" but with some of the low explosives it is necessary to plug up the muzzle very carefully before shooting. Doubtless the use of incendiary mixtures of oxidizing and combustible materials led, in the 13th century, to the perfection of the mixture which is practically the same as our commercial black blasting powder of today. About 600 years later, nitroglycerine was discovered, but for years its great potential energy could not be used because, in its liquid state, it could not be safely handled or transported. The accidental discovery that kieselguhr would absorb, and hold fairly well, three times its own weight of nitroglycerine, however, made it available. "Guhr dynamite," as the combination nitroglycerine and kieselguhr was termed, was soon displaced by dynamites having an active base, such as wood pulp and other carbonaceous combustible materials. These do all that kieselguhr will do and, in addition, increase the chemical reaction and add materially to the effectiveness of the blast.

Abstract: Data are presented from two sites in southeast England, where problems were encountered in tunnelling through ground containing flint. In response to the difficulties, substantial laboratory testing programmes were initiated to determine the strength of the flints.It is shown that the strength varies very considerably, even within a single flint particle and that the practice of estimating unconfined compressive strength by a single multiplier applied to the point load strength index (Is(50)) may give misleading results. The preparation of UCS specimens for testing was found to be very difficult and it is recommended that tunnel machine capacity is assessed relative to Is(50). Résumé: Des données sont presentées sur deux sites dans le sud-ouest de l’Angleterre,où le perçage d’un tunnel dans un sol contenant du silex a posé des problémes. En consequences de ces difficultés, des programmes substatiels de recherché en laboratoire ont été initiés afin de déterminer la resistance des silex. Es wurde gefunden, dass die Festigkeit sehr unterschiedlich war, selbst bei einzelnen Feuersteinstücken, und dass die Praxis, die unbegrenzte Kompressionsfestigkeit (uKf) auf Grund eines einzigen Multiplikationsfaktors vom Punktladefestigkeitsindex (Is50) abzuschätzen, zu irreführenden Resultaten führt. Die Vorbereitung der uKf Prüfstücke war sehr schwierig und es wird vorgeschlagen, dass die Kapazität der Tunnelbaumaschine in Abhang der Is50 bestimmt wird.

The Windy Craggy copper-cobalt-bearing massive sulfide lies in the Tatshenshini map area of northwestern British Columbia, where British Columbia joins Alaska and the Yukon. The area is covered with numerous glaciers and ice fields that mask geologic detail and hamper ground access. In 1957, Ventures Ltd., the predecessor of Falconbridge Ltd., undertook a reconnaissance of the area using a float-equipped Supercub. At that time, large lakes and glaciers were unnamed and little was known of the geology. The prospecting team was led by J.J. McDougall with Stan Bridcut as pilot-prospector. Prospecting was directed at the St. Elias Mountains between the rich Kennecott copper deposits to the northwest and the Maid of Erin silver-copper mine on the Haines Road, BC. Reconnaissance flying in 1957 and early 1958 eliminated vast segments of the Kennecott-Haines Road terrain as being too inaccessible for mining. In 1958, the Supercub landed at an unnamed lake and the terminal moraine of an unnamed 12.9-km (8-mile) long glacier was prospected. The lake was called Tats Lake and the glacier named Tats glacier (short for Tatshenshini). Float of sulfide was found in the moraine. Follow-up investigation along Tats glacier led to the discovery of several small sulfide deposits and these were staked. Prospecting active glaciers in this area can be complicated because of drainage capture by eroding valley glaciers. Glacier capture resulted in the float from one mineralized area being deposited at different times in three widely separated moraines. Float of the Windy Craggy deposit, therefore, occurs along the course of older glaciers and at the base of the currently active ones. The problem of sourcing caused much additional Supercub reconnaissance. It is interesting to note that about 40 geographic names were given various features in this unmapped portion of the St. Elias Range, and these names were ultimately officially adopted.

Introduction The Bailey mining complex is located in Greene County, PA, in the Talley Run valley. It includes two Pittsburgh No. 8 seam deep mines (Bailey and Bailey No. 2), a coal preparation plant, and two refuse areas. Clean coal is shipped from the complex by way of a 24-km (15-mile) rail spur. It con¬nects to the Monongahela Railroad in Waynesburg, PA. In early 1981, Consolidation Coal Co. (Consol) began a permitting effort aimed at building the mine. Construction began in Dec. 1981, less than six months after the first application submittal. Clean coal was produced by the Bailey preparation plant in Sept. 1984. Several factors allowed quick permitting at Bailey. Effective project planning, including early formulation of a project planning team, and identification of red flag issues helped. So did innovative responses to environmental questions, and development of environmentally sound project designs. Forming a project planning team Consol management decided that Bailey mine construction had to begin in late 1981. A project permitting team was immediately formed to see that this goal was achieved. Team members included a project manager and personnel from Consol's engineering, environmental, and operating departments. Communications among all team members was crucial in obtaining the various state and Federal environmental permits. All project permitting team members participated in weekly meetings during application preparation. Discussions at these meetings ranged from recent public contacts, to application content, to environmental design considerations. Establishing a project manager was critical to the team's success. The project manager was responsible for seeing that permit acquisition, facility construction, and operation of the mining complex proceeded on schedule. The project manager had the final word, mediated disagreements, and frequently served as project spokesman to the public. Identifying red flag issues Red flag issues are those environmental factors with the most potential for delaying the schedule or stopping the project. The first red flag issue identified was organized local opposition. This opposition had completely derailed a US Soil Conservation Service proposal to build a multipurpose dam on Enlow Fork, a short distance

THE matters I had intended to present to you ap-peared in the March 12 issue of Engineering and Mining Journal over the signature of George J. Young, so that although I should like to talk to you for about three hours on this subject, unfortunately it has all been done before. The subject originally sug-gested to me was the trend in mining methods. You will find that fully set forth much more clearly than I could hope to do, in Mr. Young's article, so that I shall confine my attention to a few points of interest in specific cases. You are undoubtedly familiar with the problem that was presented to the Miami Copper Co. when they had exhausted their so-called high-grade orebody. They had what appeared to be a large tonnage of material which their preliminary development work and such drilling as was done indicated contained one per cent copper or a-little over, and how to mine that profitably by underground methods was the question. It was somewhat complicated by the fact that the nature of the ground made them doubtful of their ability to cave it successfully. It was unquestionably harder ground than that of the more highly mineralized sections of the Miami and Inspiration- ore zone which had been mined. However, they had kept very accurate and complete records of past accomplishments and knew what they had to work with and what modifications with respect to costs would be necessary in order to solve this problem. Under the old method of working, they were extract-ing about 71/2 tons per man employed in the mining department; that is to say all labor, direct and indirect required to put the ore in the mill bins, and this, with the grade of ore which they had, resulted in a satis-factory financial outcome. Under their modified method now in use, they have raised that output per man to 29 tons per man shift. That is almost four times what they were doing with the old method.

The cost of reclamation can vary widely, depending on the primary objectives of the restoration activities. statistics in this study originated from State files, publications, and personal communications relating to restoration and pollution control measures for previously mined lands (orphan lands) and active mines. Reclamation of orphan lands is generally considered a public burden and constitutes an economic problem. All work reported here was completed under government contract, by the lowest bidder, with money coming from State and/or Federal funds. Cost would have been substantially lower had the reclamation been concurrent with mining. Several persons connected with some of the projects have observed that costs could probably be reduced by at least one half, if the reclamation had been conducted along with the mining. The expense of clearing and grubbing of volunteer vegetation, disposal of buried trees and brush, loosing of compacted spoil, and re-establishing access to areas could be saved. In addition, a contracting firm doing the work for a government agency would have mobilization costs and receive a profit. Mining companies also are profit conscious and would consider these costs in anticipating their profits (e.g., overhead would be less if reclamation is integrated with mining). The data presented here should serve as a guide for estimating and determining cost ranges, however, it should be recognized that variations exist. Adjustments may be necessary from the standpoint of physical conditions, economic conditions, price changes, and more restrictive requirements of recent surface mining laws. Reclamation conditions, procedures and successes in the eastern United States, particularly in Appalachia, have no bearing on conditions to be expected in the western United States. The situations are wholly different. Reclamation in the West differs from th t in the East, primarily because of aridity especially a during the summer months 1). Because of the many variables and differences between reclamation in eastern and western areas, they will be discussed separately.

Electroluminescence of GaAs p-n junctions fabricated by simultaneous diffusion of sulfur and iron was investigated at 77°K. A narrow emission peak with a half width of about 4 kT in the energy range between 1.14 and 1.155 eu was attributed to iron. Other transition elements exhibited light emission in the vicinity of the iron peak, namely nickel between 1.15 and 1.16 ev and cobalt between 1.16 and 1.17 ev. The efficiency of the doping with iron depended on the amoz~nt of arsenic present. A weight ratio of arsenic to iron of 4:l was sufficient to observe the emission lines associated with transition elements. The presence of oxygen reduces the intensity of the light emission. In addition to the levels associated with transition elements, levels at 1.05 and 1.28 ev, probably due to lattice defects, are observed except in diodes fabricated in solution-grown GaAs. THE near band edge emission of GaAsp-n junctions has been studied extensively in the past.' GaAs devices utilizing spontaneous and stimulated near band edge emission are of considerable practical importance. Typical junctions are fabricated by diffusion of a heavily doped p region into degenerate n-type GaAs. Much less work has been done on investigating the radiative recombination via deep levels in lightly doped p-type material. This area is of interest in understanding the performance of GaAs n-p-n transistors. GaAs transistors show remarkable improvement in high-frequency performance and current-gain stability at high temperatures, when iron is added to sulfur during the emitter diffusion process. The present work was initiated to investigate deep-level electroluminescence of iron-doped GaAs p-n junctions fabricated on vapor-phase epitaxial GaAs and on solution-grown GaAs. Presently, orebody modelling consists basically of fitting a mathematical model to represent spatially a certain geological variable, generally grade. An orebody model is constructed from a set of sample data obtained from various locations in the orebody, thus it is only one form of representation of the true phenomena. Checking the compatibility of the data with the modelling procedure is the most important factor when assessing confidence in the orebody model. The level of confidence in the model will depend on the adequacy of the data set and the validity of the basic assumption required by the modelling method. Fractal geometry is one way of modelling the spatial distribution of a geological variable in an orebody geometry. Fractals can be used to interpolate the Z(x) geological variable at unsampled sites. The concepts of self similarity and self affinity that form the basic assumption of fractal geometry theory which areinvestigated. The population distribution of the geological variable in question must be examined to determine the appropriateness of both fractal geometry and geostatistical modelling methods. The selection of the most appropriate method depends on the available data. A researcher or a practitioner needs to understand the strengths and limitations of the various modelling methods before choosing the most appropriate method. This study investigates the fractal properties of grade distribution using the variogram and some proposed variations as techniques to measure the fractalness. The aim is to assess applicability of fractal geometry theory to modelling ore grade distribution in a deposit. A comparison of the results demonstrates the methods which better capture the spatial behaviour of the variable under study.

"Considerable gold and silver values are lost to flotation tailing from both the South ern Tail orebody and the Main Zone orebody,The underlying mineralogical assemblage of the two ore types is quite different. This paper describes the research strategy employed to determine an economical method to scavenge gold and silver from flotation tailing.Much of the unrecovered gold in the Southern Tail ore is associated with arsenopyrite while silver losses are probably as unliberated tetrahedrite and minor silver-bearing sulphosalts. Processing alternatives tested include bulk sulphide recovery by flotation and gravity, selective pyrite-arsenopyrite separation, cyanidation, and oxidation pretreatments such as pressure leaching and bioleaching to enhance cyanidation response. Gold losses in the Main Zone ore are more closely associated with silver-bearing minerals, pyrite, and siliceous gangue and consequently respond more readily to conventional tank cyanidation. The 5 300 tid carbon-in-leach circuit to treat Main Zone flotation tailing is described in detail.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited's open-pit silver mine, a 70% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, is located 37 km southeast of Houston in north central British Columbia. The deposit consists of two major ore zones, Main Zone and Southern Tail (Fig. I). These zones are within a sequence of Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks striking 015 degree s and dipping 45 degrees west. Feasibility ore reserves were 28 million tonnes grading 106 g A g/t, 0.96 g Au !t and 0.38% Cu a strip ratio of 2.2 to I. A detailed mineralogical description has been presented and a comparison of the two ore zones is shown in Table I."

THE object of this paper is to discuss the fundamental principles of ball milling and to present some observations which have been made in laboratory and plant investigations. The discussion will be limited to wet grinding of ores in cylindrical mills, but doubtless many of the principles involved will be equally applicable in the other fields of fine grinding in which mills of the same type are used. In the concentrators of the United States there are about 650 ball, rod, or pebble mills, operating or ready to operate, and these have about 100,000 connected horsepower. For grinding in cement plants there is about three times this connected horsepower, and other industries have an unestimated amount, all used for the general type of grinding that is to be discussed here. It is true that these figures do not represent stupendous amounts of power, but when one considers that ball milling is often the "bottle neck" in a concentrator and that it often accounts for the largest single item in the cost sheet, the importance of a compre-hensive understanding of the principles of ball milling can be appreciated. Much of the past literature devoted to the subject has been concerned with the Kick-Rittinger dispute over evaluating grinding, or with dissertations on ball paths and the closely allied impact versus attrition hypotheses, or with the exclusive consideration of certain specific varia-bles, such as mill speed or circulating load, irrespective of the other factors in operation. Such subjects may be dismissed with but little discussion in what may be called, by comparison, a new philosophy in the study of ball milling. Briefly, this "new philosophy" consists of using power as an index of the mill operation, and investigating grind-ing from the standpoint of set and induced variables, with emphasis on the latter.

This work explores the effect of ore hardness variability on the design of a solar photovoltaic system with battery storage and grid backup, to operate a semi-autogenous grinding mill (SAG). First, a case of two synthetic ore populations was studied, without any consideration of spatial distribution. The mean and variance of the ore hardness (measured in specific energy consumption) of both populations were subjected to a sensitivity analysis. The operation was evaluated with one and two stockpiles. The latter allows classifying according to ore hardness to adapt the SAG energy consumption to the solar cycle. The results show that using two stockpiles allows achieving a larger autonomy (i.e., fewer energy imports) at lower total costs, especially when the difference of mean hardness between the two populations is large. The difference in variance (between the two populations) has a smaller impact on the design recommendations. Second, a case study was performed considering the spatial distribution of geometallurgical units. Two cases were considered: (a) brownfield, when there is historical information of the actual variability of the ore hardness; and (b) greenfield, when the system design relies mainly on geometallurgical modeling. Brownfield and greenfield planning result in similar sizing recommendations of the solar power plant if precise drill cores are available. In this case, geometallurgical modeling is an effective tool for forecasting the energy demand necessary for designing the power plant. INTRODUCTION Solar energy can help make mining more sustainable (Moreno-Leiva et al., 2017). With falling battery costs, an autonomous solar supply is soon to become an economical alternative in many parts of the world, even in the presence of a larger power grid (Child et al., 2017). Although this, places with high solar radiation such as the Atacama Desert in Chile, nowadays show a large potential of incorporating solar energy as a supply of energy. Many of the Chilean copper mines are in this zone making it interesting to study their compatibility and potential of integrating this renewable source to their operation. The power demand in a copper mineral processing plant is determined by the main power loads in grinding and flotation, with grinding typically the largest power consumer, especially the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills (Wei and Craig, 2009). In Chile, it corresponds on average the 50% of the electrical energy consumption (COCHILCO, 2013). Solar energy production is determined by the irradiance perceived into the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels (which varies through the geographic location) and several other climatic parameters such as the current season, humidity, temperature, altitude, and others (Molina et al., 2017). Also, solar energy is only generated during the sun hours, getting to a maximum generation at a certain peak hour during midday, and finally dropping to zero during the night. This shows a cyclic parabolic profile as shown in Figure 1. Due to the SAG mill operated continuously, the power supply always must be available. During the night, to continue supplying the energy, it is necessary to complement the solar power generation with a battery energy storage system (BESS), which will act as a power backup and a buffer. For the optimal sizing of this PV- BESS system, information of the demand profile is needed (Pamparana et al., 2017). In the case of the SAG mill operation, the resulting demand relates to the ore-hardness for a specific throughput and grind size (Morrell, 2004). Therefore, for a given throughput and target grind size, a harder ore would require more power, and variable hardness results in more variable demand and a subsequent need for larger energy storage (Bueno et al., 2015). AFTER six years of war-enforced idleness, Cyprus copper mines are operating again. This relatively long shutdown seems infinitesimal when compared with something like seventeen hundred years of inactivity that followed the important operations of the ancient Romans, and continued until the twentieth century. The historical records of the ancient operators are scarce but full of interest to those who realize that Cyprus copper production was important more than two thousand years ago. This paper, however, will give only a brief review of the ancient history and the evidence of ancient mining which have been quite fully covered in other publications.1-6 The purpose of this paper is to give a general sketch of the Cyprus Mines Corporation's enterprise in the Island of Cyprus, with special emphasis on those conditions and practices which are unusual. The picture is not intended to be complete, and many interesting details will be omitted. Some of these may be described in subsequent papers covering departmental practices. The principal operations of Cyprus Mines Corp. are in Cyprus, where it has leasehold concessions from the Cyprus Government covering about 50 square miles. It holds additional areas under "Prospecting Permits." The consideration for the concessions is a royalty on production, coupled with minimum annual rentals. Cyprus is a British Colony in the Eastern end of the Mediterranean with an area of about 3000 square miles and a population of about 400,000, of which 65 pct may be classed as Greeks on the basis of language, religious training, and traditions. About 25 pct are Moslems, principally of Turkish extraction. Prevailing languages are Greek and Turkish. A large proportion of the supervisory and administrative staff and practically all of the skilled and unskilled craftsmen and laborers are drawn from the native population. The "overseas" staff constitutes not more than 2 pct of the employees. The majority of these are from the United Kingdom, the British Dominions and Colonies. About one-third are from the United States of America. The topography of the Island is rugged, with mountains and foothills covering more than two-thirds of the area. Between the Kyrenea range rising to 3000-ft elevation, along the north coast, and the Troodos range (maximum elevation 6400 ft) occupying the southwest half of the Island, lies a cultivated rolling plain, the "Mesaoria," dry in summer and watered only by the winter rains and by scanty irrigation from small mountain streams and wells in the spring and summer. Climate and natural vegetation are characteristic of semi-arid conditions. The "urban" population, about one-fourth of the total, lives in the five port towns, Famagusta, Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos and Kyrenia, and in the capitol Nicosia, near the center of the Island. The suburban population lives almost entirely in villages or small towns, with very few people residing in isolated country homes.

Case studies of the behaviour of large open stopes at the New Broken Hill Consolidated Mine, Broken Hill and the CSA Mine, Cobar, N.S.W. are considered. Deformations were measured by multipoint rod extensometers in sufficient detail to note the phases of rock behaviour, from intact through to rock-fall. In one case readings were obtained from a zone of stress failure in which two bumps, felt as ground tremors, occurred. In this case noise and stress were also monitored. Deformations were analysed in relation to previously measured in situ rock stress, and conclusions drawn about the degree of conformity to, and the areas of departure from, elastic model behaviour. Attempts to describe the growth of instability utilize reduction factors of the apparent modulus, a magnification factor for the apparent Poisson's ratio, and a correlation between progressive noise count and displacement. Monitoring itself is seen as an aid in determiing the final dimensions of stopes and pillars. One large stope, of intermediate dimension 80 m, was mined essentially without change of plan, whereas a change in mining plan was necessary in other stopes. Aspects of interest to mine planners, and areas where futher research is needed, are indicated.

YOUR Excellency, Fellow Members of the Australasian Institute Of Mining Engineers and Gentlemen:- Nearly a decade has passed, since our Institute first met in New Zealand. May I, at the very outset of this second gathering, congratulate the Institute on the great progress that has been made in the interval. At the first meeting in New Zealand in the year 1903, I understand that less than 20 persons were present, and now in the large concourse before me I believe there are not fewer than 140 persons, while if every member of the Institute to-day where here there would be over 500 which is a great change from a membership of only 250 in 1903. I feel deeply appreciative of the honour you have conferred upon me by electing me your President for the year 1911. In return for the compliment, may I ask you to believe that I shall do everything in my power to further the interests of the Institute throughout the coming year.It is a great regret to me to realise that soon my work in New Zealand will be over. Consolidated Rutile Limited's (CRL) operations incorporate the exploration, mining, processing, marketing and distribution of mineral sands. This paper outlines the current scope of CRL operations in vegetated sand dunes on North Stradbroke Island (NSI), Queensland. Included are some specific comments relating to design and construction of high capacity dredges which float in artificial ponds and are an integral part of mining high dune ore reserves. Three floating cutter suction dredges with combined sand throughput capacity in excess of 7000 tph are used in mining operations on NSI. Initial processing is by gravity and magnetic methods on large wet concentrators also floating in the artificial ponds. Spiral sluices are used exclusively in the newest concentrator, which has the highest recovery of heavy minerals.

As was true with many mining companies, the management of Tennessee Copper Co. followed with interest the successful application of AN-FO as an explosive in coal stripping, construction, open-pit mining, and finally in underground salt mines. Since Tennessee Copper's operations required about 1,250,000 lb of dynamite annually, the potential savings in explosives costs that could be realized by switching to AN-FO could not be ignored. From a cautious start, AN-FO is now being used for stoping, development work and secondary blasting in all mines of Tennessee Copper Co. AN-FO accounts for 80% of the explosives used in such work. Fragmentation, fumes, crew acceptance, and cost savings have been quite attractive without any decrease in safety.

There has been considerable growth in public enterprise institutions involved in mineral commodity markets. These institutions typically consist of trading organizations (STO1s), regulatory agencies, and mixed agencies. The particular character of these institutions varies according to whether they reside in developing countries, in Eastern Europe (COMECON Countries), in industrialized countries, or in the form of international agencies. The purpose of this paper is to explain recent attempts to assess the growth of public enterprises as well as their impacts on mineral markets and trade. Some earlier analyses of market impact made by the author have been up- dated for four major mineral markets: copper, tin, bauxite and iron ore. Conclusions are drawn regarding the dynamics of market structure changes and their impacts.

This chapter will summarize some of the important applications in the geotechnical (pit slope, spoil pile and tailings stability, and hydrology), the environmental (including reclamation), and equipment selection and analysis areas. Virtually all aspects discussed are applicable both for planning of new mines and for evaluating existing operations. Probably the most influential item which has affected the areas discussed in this chapter and possibly most areas discussed in this book is and will continue to be, in the next decade, the myriad federal and state environmental, safety, and reclamation regulations affecting new mine development and continued operation of existing properties. Computer applications have been and will continue to be instrumental in assisting in planning to meet the challenges of the requirements dictated by these regulations.

As a result of my field examinations in this Province, I have been struck by the evidence of widespread mineralization in rocks, particularly the limestones of Carboniferous age. Six prospects of lead and zinc or lead alone scattered through the eastern part of the mainland, one copper prospect and three veins of siderite, all point to a period of mineralization subsequent to the forming of the Carboniferous rocks in which they occur. While none of the present prospects are of proved economic importance, still it is possible, and indeed probable, that further prospecting will find concentrations sufficiently large to make mines. It may possibly aid the prospecting for these base metals if the present scraps of information are assembled from various sources, and I will further briefly recount the information as a result of my observations. Gay?s River At Gay's river, midway between Halifax and Truro, and four miles east of the railway, numerous pits and natural exposures show galena and sphalerite in limestone of Carboniferous age, near where it lies unconformably upon slate and quartzite of the gold series. These exposures extend for a length of over one thousand feet along a curving contact. The pits show that on the contact there is a fossiliferous and somewhat porous layer of limestone, which is so impregnated with galena and small amounts of sphalerite as to be of ore grade. Wherever observed, the thickness of this layer is less than two feet.

The terms "cable bolting," "extended ground support," and "grouted cable" are synonymous, and they have been popping up with much more regularity in the mining engineer s vocabulary. In simplest terms, lengths of u itensioned cable up to 18.3 m (60 ft) are grouted in drill holes prior to mining. This permits radical departures from mining practices that rely on conventional rock reinforcement. For example, by placing a pattern of cable bolts in the back of an open stope, ore can be mined in successive slices. After each slice is taken the protruding cable; are simply cut off and mining proceeds. When about 4.6 m (15 ft) of reinforced back remains, a crew places a new par tern of cable bolts in the ore.
